really a lovely show - only time i've seen junkies live and it was perfect. Margo was very present and fun - she sang beautifully and conversed with the audience. really dug their longer jams - almost The Doors like at times.

huge shoutout to Great American Music Hall for providing such a great, lounge like atmosphere.

Pretty disappointed.

First, their numbers played are vastly so called ‘new songs’ which I never heard of. So stingy on well known songs, I think they only sang like 2-3 songs at the end (including encore). Let’s admit it, this is not Billy Joel or Lou Reed. It’s a mediocre band with strong fan base. We were there to go back time. I would not go to their concert, let alone listen to their music much now.

Secondly, the place, the City Winery, was so cramming, people can hardly turn their bodies. It was just beyond imagination. Ditch the place. Sit like a real person at least and breathe.

Cowboy Junkies were spectacular!!!

Their's is a particular, distinctive sound defined by Margot Timms' voice and the musicianship of the players...

At times they moved easily through the moody sound they're known for, at others they rocked the house with powerful playing on long musical interludes; Ms Timms walked to the rear of the stage, allowing the focus to center on the band and soloists...

A spectacular performance, don't miss them if they come your way...

Cowboy Junkies Announce New Album Such Ferocious Beauty & Tour Dates

Watch the video for the devastatingly beautiful first single This Is What I Lost.

cowboy junkies tour 2023 europe

T HE EDITED PRESS RELEASE: “Sometimes revolutions begin quietly. In 1988, Cowboy Junkies proved that there was an audience waiting for something quiet, beautiful and reflective. Their album The Trinity Session was like a whisper that cut through the noise — and it was compelling. It stood out in the midst of the flash and bombast that came to define the late ’80s. The now-classic recording combined folk, blues and rock in a way that had never been heard before and went on to sell more than a million copies.

Cowboy Junkies will continue their quiet revolution with the release of Such Ferocious Beauty on June 2, 2023 via their own Latent Recordings . This is the band’s first release of new material in five years and follows their heralded 2022 collection of covers, Songs Of The Recollection . Such Ferocious Beauty is vintage Cowboy Junkies and another dimension from the lo-fi Canadian band comprised of siblings Margo , Michael and Peter Timmins and lifelong friend Alan Anton . The new body of work is a rumination on aging, losing parents, facing mortality, and creating space for one’s life in the midst of the ruin that comes from merely living.

Today, the band share What I Lost , the first emphasis track that reflects on the last several months of the Timmins’ father’s life. The song is a reflection on conversations that Michael had with his father during his battle with dementia, “memories of his flying days as a bush pilot in northern Quebec and his love of jazz and his experiences of seeing the great big bands of the ’50s would often work their way into our conversations. I would often think about all of those memories and experiences that were slowly being eaten away by the dementia and would eventually completely disappear with his death. Lines like ‘This is what I lost’ and ‘I can sit here and wait’ from What I Lost and Shadows 2  are not so much about him, but about me.”

cowboy junkies tour 2023 europe

The song is captured in a video for which Peter Timmins created an artistic interpretation of the effects of dementia on the person and those around them. “The man in the video is our father,” says Michael Timmins , “sitting in his living room listening to Duke Ellington … I’m not sure what he is thinking. The color ‘super 8’ footage is from the late ’50s, taken in Montreal and Magog, Quebec by our grandfather (our Mom’s dad). The people in it are my dad, mom and aunt (mom’s sister) … there are some quick glances of our oldest brother and an uncle (my mom’s brother). There are also a few quick flashes of family pics of all the kids (us and our siblings).”

For Such Ferocious Beauty , Michael stresses that he and Margo spent more time working through the songs, letting her interpretations really settle before taking them into the studio. And once in the studio, he worked with Alan and Peter to create even more dynamic tracks than usual. “This is a different kind of recording; there’s a denseness to it. In many ways the music, the choice of certain structures, the tones used become as important in communicating the albums themes as do the lyrics.” “The songs are expressions of Mike’s soul,” says Margo Timmins , “but once written, once he gives them to me, to the band, and eventually the audience, there is no right or wrong interpretation.”

Formed in Toronto in 1985, the band have sparkled over the course of 26 albums. “I’ve known Alan longer than I’ve known Pete,” says Michael. “We were friends before Pete was born.” Unlike most long-lasting groups, Cowboy Junkies have never had a breakup or taken a sanity-saving hiatus. There’s an appreciation of each other that keeps them working. “It’s that intimacy and understanding of what each one of us brings to the table,” says Michael.

For nearly 40 years, Cowboy Junkies have remained true to their unique artistic vision and to the introspective, quiet intensity that is their signature, creating a critically acclaimed body of original work that has endeared them to an audience unwavering in its loyalty. Albums like The Caution Horses (1990), Black Eyed Man (1992), Pale Sun, Crescent Moon (1993), Lay It Down (1996) and more recently, Open (2001), One Soul Now (2004), Early 21st Century Blues (2005) and At the End of Paths Taken (2007) chronicle a creative journey reflecting the independent road the band has elected to travel.

Speaking of travel, the band have already booked a slate of Ontario concerts this fall. All tickets for the following shows go on sale on Friday, March 31:

Concert Review: Cowboy Junkies — Still Outside the Mainstream

By Scott McLennan

For years now, Cowboy Junkies has been bringing its brand of contemplative, atmospheric rock ’n’ roll into a patchwork of independent venues in our region.

Cowboy Junkies performing at Plymouth Memorial Hall on February 16.

Cowboy Junkies played its first show of 2024 on Friday night in the Plymouth Memorial Hall, a community-run venue that opened in the 1920s. It became famous in 1975 because it was where Bob Dylan decided to launch his Rolling Thunder Revue. Today, the performance space is host to comics, illusionists, and bands working the smaller pockets of the regional entertainment ecosystem.

Hanging outside the mainstream is where Cowboy Junkies have long thrived — both musically and physically. For many years now, the band has been bringing its brand of contemplative, atmospheric rock ’n’ roll into a patchwork of independent venues in our region, making their performances feel more like a convening than a concert. Accordingly, from Plymouth the band is scheduled to trek up to Laconia, New Hampshire, and then stick around New England for a week playing other noncorporate venues in Rockport and Turner’s Falls in Massachusetts, Old Saybrook and Norwalk in Connecticut, and Newport.

The 20-song, two-set tour-opener in Plymouth found the band meandering through its vast catalog. That said, Cowboy Junkies paid particularly close attention to its latest album, Such Ferocious Beauty, as well as choosing several selections from The Trinity Session , the 1988 album that presented an unconventional sound that had been captured in the unconventional “studio” setting of a church.

New was connected to old in a concert that created a smooth arc through time. Singer Margo Timmins and her brothers Peter Timmins on drums and Michael Timmins on guitars, along with fellow band mates bassist Alan Anton and multi-instrumentalist Jeff Bird, worked their patented brand of musical alchemy, a mix that absorbs squalling psychedelia as comfortably as it does rustic folk and country music.

Michael Timmins writes the band’s songs and has masterfully built a repertoire of original material that has aged in real time along with the musicians. Songs meet — often head on — the challenges of growing up and growing older, of raising kids and losing parents. There are tunes about how one deals with demanding social and political shifts that occur throughout a lifetime. But, a testament to the strength of Timmins’s writing and to the band’s finely tuned sense of working together, the Cowboy Junkies revisit older material with an inventive sensibility that brings out new insights.

For example, early in the show, Cowboy Junkies dove into its ethereal cover of Lou Reed’s “Sweet Jane,” the song that introduced many to this band when it hit the airwaves. (That was back in the days when airwaves mattered and streams mostly referred to water.) Margo Timmins leaned into the line, “Me, I’m in a rock ’n’ roll band” (ironically, this lyric had been edited out of the group’s original recorded version). Her grin growing with each repetition of the phrase, her enthusiasm underscored her evident joy that, at the age of 63, she and an audience that was on average of a similar vintage as the singer, were thankfully still drinking deeply from the well of rock ’n’ roll.

When done correctly, rock ’n’ roll can be both ageless and timeless.

The songs from Such Ferocious Beauty were born from lived experiences, particularly reflective of the period during the pandemic when the Timmins siblings were caring for their father as he slowly succumbed to dementia.

The clash of inevitably and resistance could be heard in the ache of “What I Lost”; a similar tangle of emotions fueled a beautiful rendition of “Circe and Penelope,” in which ancient myth serves as a means to accept life’s regrets: “I enjoy the what-ifs and could’ve-beens.”

Cowboy Junkies closed the short Such Ferocious Beauty –heavy first set by switching over to a cover of Neil Young’s “Don’t Let it Bring You Down,” a showcase for Margo Timmins’s rich vocal timbre and the band’s ability to put its distinctive stamp on a classic song.

For its second set, Cowboy Junkies dipped into its back catalog, starting with a psychedelic spin through 2007’s “My Little Basquiat.”

The band not only trotted out some deeper cuts, but also gave fresh readings to concert staples, such as “’Cause Cheap Is How I Feel” and “Black Eyed Man,” the latter part of what turned out to be a mini dread-dripping acoustic set that also featured “Shadows 2” and “Blue Skies,” both from Such Ferocious Beauty .

cowboy junkies tour 2023 europe

From The Trinity Session , the Cowboy Junkies delivered their take on the Allen Reynolds-penned Waylon Jennings hit “Dreaming My Dreams With You” and “Blue Moon Revisited (Song for Elvis).” The traditional gospel number “Working on a Building,” which the band included on The Trinity Session , generated the concert’s biggest emotional swell. Michael Timmins and Bird pushed the song to ragged and rapturous levels while Peter Timmins and Anton held down a hypnotic groove that blurred that line between devotion and submission. The Cowboy Junkies took us to church and then made us a little terrified to be there.

Existential angst was never far away as the band performed “A Common Disaster” and “Good Friday,” antecedents (of sorts) to newer material such as “Hard to Build. Easy to Break.”

The band’s playful side emerged during an encore reading of “Fuck, I Hate the Cold.” But before anyone could become too giddy, Cowboy Junkies closed out the night with its disquieting version of “Walking After Midnight,” which taps into something a bit more sinister in the song than what’s heard in the version popularized by Patsy Cline.

It was very rock ’n’ roll.

Scott McLennan covered music for the Worcester Telegram & Gazette from 1993 to 2008. He then contributed music reviews and features to the Boston Globe , Providence Journal , Portland Press Herald , and WGBH, as well as to the Arts Fuse . He also operated the NE Metal blog to provide in-depth coverage of the region’s heavy metal scene.

Unlike most long-lasting groups, Cowboy Junkies have never had a break up or taken a sanity-saving hiatus. There’s an appreciation of each other that keeps them constantly working. “It’s that intimacy and understanding of what each one of us brings to the table,” says Michael. Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.

Europe here we come

' src=

We are off to Europe next week for a two week tour of Spain, Portugal and Italy ….pretty tough, eh? We are very excited to see our Southern friends (and enjoy a bit of their weather and whatever else they have to offer). There may not be much money floating around those countries these days but there still isn't a better place in the world to spend time than Southern Europe.

Here is a video of a performance that we did in Germany two Novembers ago. It was 1:30am, we were the last act of a two day festival jammed in to a tiny venue and on a tiny stage, Alan had been in a coma all day having been stricken by strep throat and we were all feeling the effects of having spent the previous day in Christiania….a lazy, hazy, surreal performance. Enjoy.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!
