On a personal note, I have been visiting Thailand since 1998 and have lived in Bangkok and Chiang Mai for several years. The documentaries about Thailand that I’m recommending cover many different aspects of the country and will give you better insight for any visit to Thailand.

Thailand: Earth’s Tropical Paradise (2017)

Thailand: Earth’s Tropical Paradise is a three-part documentary series produced by the BBC Natural History Unit and explores the diverse ecosystems and wildlife of Thailand, showcasing the country’s rich natural beauty.

The series covers various aspects of Thailand’s geography, from its lush rainforests to its pristine beaches and coral reefs. It delves into the lives of the unique and sometimes elusive wildlife that inhabits these environments, offering viewers a closer look at the country’s biodiversity.

The Rescue (2021)

The Rescue is a documentary film directed and produced by Jimmy Chin and Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi. It was released in 2021 and focuses on the dramatic rescue of the Wild Boars soccer team from the Tham Luang Nang Non-cave in Thailand in 2018.

The documentary provides a detailed account of the international rescue effort that captured global attention. The rescue operation involved expert cave divers, including members of the Thai Navy SEALs and divers from various countries.

The young soccer team and their coach were trapped inside the cave complex due to rising floodwaters. The documentary captures the challenges, risks, and complexities involved in the mission to bring the boys and their coach to safety.

This is one of the best recent documentaries about Thailand to watch as it is gripping to see how intense the rescue was.

Railway Sleepers (2016)

Directed by Thai filmmaker Sompot Chidgasornpongse, this documentary is a meditative exploration of people’s lives along the Thai railway. It beautifully captures the landscapes and stories of those who live and work near the train tracks.

The film is known for its unique structure, as it features 2,000 people recounting their dreams while riding the train across Thailand. Each dream story is presented through a single static shot, providing a diverse and intimate glimpse into the dreams and aspirations of the people.

Buffalo Girls (2012)

Buffalo Girls explores the world of Muay Thai boxing in Thailand, focusing on the lives of two eight-year-old girls, Stam and Pet, who are professional child boxers.

Muay Thai is a traditional Thai martial art, and the documentary delves into the cultural and societal aspects surrounding the participation of young girls in this sport.

The film raises ethical questions about child labour, exploitation, and the impact of cultural traditions on the lives of the young girls involved in Muay Thai.

Buffalo Girls sheds light on the challenges faced by these young boxers and provides a platform for discussions about cultural practices, gender roles, and the rights of children.

Thailand’s Ancient Modern Kingdom | Ayutthaya (2020)

This is a great documentary if you have any interest in the history of Thailand. The host of the documentary, Peter Lee, travels around Thailand to see how the ancient kingdom of Ayutthaya came to be.

Ayutthaya, with its 1 million residents, was the capital of one of the great empires of Asia which controlled much of Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam. This gives a great insight into that past and its influences that still linger to this day.

Legend Kru Yodthong Senanan – Muay Thai Documentary

This is another excellent Muay Thai documentary that you should watch. One of the founders of the Kru Muaythai Association (KMA), Kru Yodthong, who is a legendary Thai Muay Thai boxer, teaches his craft and shares the true art of Muay Thai in this documentary.

This video also features the first World Amateur Thai boxing competition held in Bangkok in 1995 by General Tienchai Sirisambhand.

This is a must-watch if you have any interest in Muay Thai.

The Sacred Tattoos Of Thailand (2018)

This is a very short documentary that takes a look at the traditional tattoos of Thailand called a Sak Yant, which is deeply connected to the Buddhist culture in the country.

They are given by masters and monks and are a mix of art and Buddhism and are believed by Thai people to have magical powers that can help with many aspects of life, such as protection, good fortune, power, etc.

This documentary also shows the l Wai Khru ceremony where wearers of Sak Yant tattoos come to pay respect to their tattoo masters. It’s a sight to see!

Thailand’s Fearless Cop (2022)

Out of all these documentaries about Thailand, this is one of the darkest to watch. It follows a police officer, Paween Pongsirin, who is in charge of an investigation into a human trafficking network, where mass graves were found.

He comes into difficulty with some of the country’s elite after it is discovered an army general may be linked to the case and he flees to Australia fearing for his life.

In Australia, he tells everything that he knows and follows his fight for justice in Thailand.

Thailand – The Wild Heart – Wildest Indochina (2022)

Let’s finish these best documentaries about Thailand with another wildlife and nature documentary, as Thailand is so beautiful.

Thailand truly is a gem of a country to visit and a personal favourite of mine as I have been visiting here since 1998. I love the people and their culture.

The 10 Best Netflix Travel Shows And Documentaries In Asia

With international trips dissipated to pretty much non-existence, for the past few years we’ve had to turn to different forms of entertainment to try and satiate our desires to travel.

Unsurprisingly, consuming online content was one way that many people realized was going to be as close as they could get to experiencing the other side of the world.

Watching as real people explored foreign cities, ate peculiar foods, and interacted with strangers somewhat filled that void that we all wished we could go out and fill ourselves with.

Netflix saw the opportunity and absolutely leaped into the task of spoiling us with huge additions of travel shows and documentaries that were made to engage us in ways that makes us feel like we’re actually there in that moment.

Their best content has helped us keep the travel bug at bay and fed into our wanderlust desires in the best ways possible.

Watching these shows, whether it be about countries we’ve already visited or ones that we’re eager to visit once we’re allowed to, inspires us and gives us insight on how we can better plan the trip when the time comes around (and it will come, hopefully sooner rather than later!).

And to be honest, they’re just super fun and easy to watch!

There is currently a plethora of shows about food, travel, and/or culture – but the best ones are the ones that combine all three.

Let’s look into the 10 best Netflix travel shows and documentaries out right now!

1. Street Food Series – Asia (2019)

The Street Food series is a much-loved global series that’s the perfect viewing experience for foodies around the world. Every episode follows the story of a local chef and shares how their famous street food stall came to be.

If you’re a fan of journeys, this series will take you on some wild rides. You’ll be pretty much learning the origin stories of some of the chefs, some who literally started from the bottom, some of who took over flailing family businesses to completely turn them around.

The first series focuses on Asia, taking you for a tour around popular Asian destinations such as Thailand , Singapore , Delhi, Seoul , and many more. The second season focuses on Latin America.

2. Twogether (2020)

Veteran South Korean entertainer Lee Seung Gi and popular Taiwanese actor Liu Yi-Hao (stage name Jasper) are thrown in the deep end in this fun travel and exploration documentary series.

Basically, before starting filming in Indonesia, they met briefly for the first time when they were told that they would be filming this show. Fast-forward to months later and they’re both stepping off the airplane in Yogyakarta, a foreign Indonesian city neither have ever visited before.

From there, both parties must navigate through ‘missions’ (tasks) as submitted by their various fans across multiple cities around Asia, all whilst trying to overcome their language barrier and adapt to their environment.

From the get-go, you get the strong feeling that this is not scripted, as both parties are as awkward as it gets. Communicating in Taiwanese, Korean, and a sprinkle of English, you can feel them warming up to each other as the show goes on, and eventually they form a wonderful brotherhood you just can’t make up.

Both Seung Gi and Jasper are adventurous, comical and overall, wonderfully likable in this amazing series.

3. Somebody Feed Phil (2020)

In this fun and light-hearted travel, food and culture documentary, Phil Rosenthal, the creator of the classic sitcom “Everybody Loves Raymond” travels the world to indulge in delicious local cuisine and explore more about the culture of the destinations.

Some of the cities that he visits include Bangkok , Saigon , Seoul, and Singapore.

Unsurprisingly, his genuine interest in local customs, openness to trying even the strangest of foods, and amusing dry humour have hooked hundreds of thousands of people around the world. There are currently 4 seasons available to watch on Netflix.

4. J-Style Trip (2020)

Chinese artist Jay Chou is synonymous with legendary music. Many argue that it was he who put C-pop on the global map; if not, then it was he who expanded it beyond its horizons.

On the surface level, this documentary showcases Jay and his crew traveling around different destinations around the world. They perform crazy magic tricks, participate in fun and adventurous activities, and generally have good banter.

However, if you’re a long-time C-pop music lover, you’ll find that this series is much more than what it appears to be.

Whilst there is the glitz and glamor of visiting Paris and globetrotting through Singapore, there are moments of nostalgia as Jay Chou talks about his childhood dreams and inspiration. Certain conversations delve you deeper into the thoughts of the musician and remind you that he is a human before he is an artist.

Regardless of whether you’re a Jay Chou fan or not, this is a great series to binge.

5. The Hungry & The Hairy (2022)

Globally renowned k-popstar Rain and veteran South Korean comedian Ro Hong-chul are a pair of two unlikely friends in their late 30s who get together to traverse the country for light adventure and great food.

The synopsis of the series is basic enough: from Jeju Island to all the way back to Seoul, the two friends dip into various locations with their motorbikes to savour the scenery and sample the local food offerings.

This is a super laid-back, easy-going travelogue show that doesn’t take itself too seriously.  

From the ridiculous outfits to the never-ending banter, you’ll find yourself immersed in the chemistry of the two as well as the gorgeous shots of the areas they go exploring.

One highlight of this show includes the endless drone shots of the long stretches of highways with mountains and beaches flanking the sides, reminding you that there is a whole world out there to explore soon.

Another highlight is the food they devour. When Rain is not showing off his culinary skills and cooking up a storm, they’re stopping into some restaurants that are local favourites to eat until they pass out (literally).

6. Midnight Asia – Eat Dance Dream (2022)

This eclectic show is unique in that rather than show celebrities, it follows the lives of individuals living life in some of the craziest night scenes across Asia.

Brightly lit neon sign boards, big personalities, and stunning drone shots characterize this show. This travel documentary series specifically shoots late at night to really showcase the party vibes of the city it’s highlighting.

The first episode focuses on Tokyo . In Shinjuku, we’re introduced to Sumiko Iwamuro, an 85-year-old DJ.  

We get to know Rogerio Ignacio Vaz, a Brazilian born to Japanese parents, who’s a mixologist.  

We follow Shotaro Komijo, as he drags his bar cart, Twillo, to a random location and then sends an update to his followers via his social media.

These are only a few of the personalities you’ll get to meet.

From Tokyo to Mumbai, Seoul to Taipei , East Asia has its moment in this series.

7. Ugly Delicious (2020)

Part cooking show, part documentary, Ugly Delicious the gold standard for those interested in how food and culture intertwine.

David Chang is a renowned chef who is the owner of the globally popular Momofuku restaurant group. From noodles to fried chicken sandwiches to pastries, his culinary ventures have left little for the imagination.

He starred in both seasons of Ugly Delicious, traveling the world, sampling and breaking down dishes and providing commentary and insight on its concept and history.

Viewers will like how grounded this show is. It isn’t merely just about the food itself; David features guests who sit down over a meal, conversing easily and candidly. There are nostalgic memories brought up, discussions about comfort foods being commercialized, and immigrants opening up shop to provide a taste of home.

David Chang ultimately drives home the message that food is a universal language, and it brings people together.

8. Zulu Man in Japan (2019)

In this short documentary, South African rapper Nasty C takes to the streets of Japan , immersing himself into the local culture, collaborating with local artists, and exposing himself to the vibrant creative arts and music scene.

With only a 48-minute running time, this is a quick and easy watch. You follow Nasty C as he freely and liberally explores the country’s night scene, gets into the thick of the local fashion and arts, attends concerts and more.

For those who have travelled to Japan before, you would know that the vibes in this country are unmatched.

So, to witness an up-and-coming rapper who’s never visited the country before take in the electric scenery, energy, and people the same way you did – in awe and wonderment – it will make you feel things.

9. Flavorful Origins

In this colourful documentary series, Flavorful Origins masterfully takes us through the various traditional cooking techniques of the Chaoshan Cuisine.

The history and culture intertwined with the real individuals in this series provides us with an insight into this relatively unknown branch of Chinese cuisine.  

Each episode focuses on a different dish, some we may have come across before, and others we’ve likely never ever heard about.

The in-depth look at how the chefs, some of whom have had techniques passed down to them from generations before, prepare and cook the food will amaze you.

Frying, grilling, steaming – no cooking method is left off the table.

Whilst there are a whopping 20-episodes, which might seem a tad long for some people, the standardized approach yet fresh content of each episode will have you eating away at the show quicker than you realise.

10. Midnight Diner Tokyo Stories (2019)

The Midnight Diner Tokyo Series is a little bit different from the rest of shows mentioned above. Rather than filming real people traveling the world and exploring food, this show is a work of fiction.

However, it’s not fiction as you know it. Rather, with nuanced characters and clever script-writing, it can be described as a travelogue, a food review show, or even a commentary show on the Japanese lifestyle.

The show itself follows the story of ‘Master’, the owner/chef of a small diner in Tokyo who serves a variety of Japanese dishes to his customers. The diner is open from midnight to 7am, and you quickly find that customers are generally regulars who come for Master’s listening ear and comfort food.

If you’re missing hearing the Japanese language, are looking for something to watch that won’t challenge your thinking too hard, and just want to have a feel-good show on, Midnight Diner Tokyo Stories will introduce you to some unique characters.

Over recent years, the public’s fascination with dark tourism destinations has boomed. Sites such as Chernobyl and Auschwitz draw in thousands of tourists every year. Farrier’s quest to unearth the morbid takes him to several high profile dark tourism destinations, including the site of the Fukushima nuclear disaster, on a JFK assassination tour and he even witnesses an exorcism in Mexico City.  

Although Farrier sometimes comes across as a mediocre Louis Theroux, this thought-provoking travel show succeeds in its aim and transports you into the unknown. The result is an interesting series that explores the darker side of life (and death).

In the Netflix series Down To Earth , actor Zac Efron and wellness author Darin Olien travel across the globe learning about the wellness and sustainability efforts being made in numerous destinations.

Each of the eight episodes focuses on a different location and aspect of sustainability or personal wellness.

Expedition Happiness is a home movie/travelogue that follows the story of a German couple as they give up their life in Germany to do an epic road trip in the Americas with their dog Rudi.

The couple, whose names are Selima and Felix, purchased a yellow school bus in Florida for 9500 USD. After working on it for three months, they transformed it into their “Loft on Wheel”, a comfortable, spacious, and well-equipped adventure bus. 

The itinerary was to start in Alaska near Denali National Park , drive all the way down to Central America, cross over to South America, and finish in Argentina.

On their adventure, they documented all the incredible landscapes they saw, the people they met, and more.

Jack Whitehall is a British comedian who attended private school and has a somewhat disjointed relationship with his father Michael because of this. Jack also never got to take a gap year before going to university so season one of Travels with my Father is all about Jack finally embarking on a traditional ‘gap year’ trip to Southeast Asia. The twist is he takes his father with him so they can strengthen their bond.

The series takes place in Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam and highlights some of the gap year activities that can be done including full moon parties on the beach and visiting Angkor Wat. By the end of their travels, they reflect on what they have learned about each other and themselves.

It also showcases early Catholic power and greed. The Pope had absolute power and a religious mission that seemed corrupt whichever person was Pope and ruler. 

The Medici focus really hits the major sites of the city and also the start of the Renaissance period in Italy. The crowning of the main dome in the cathedral was a major achievement during this time frame and it was really fascinating to see how this was depicted and shown in development and the struggles of the Medici family to get this undertaking done.

Also, it was interesting to see how easy it was during that time frame to create wealth and also lose it depending on your affiliations and business relationships with the pope and other influential rulers of that time.

Watch the Medici’s on Netflix and if you visit Florence, you’ll gain a better understanding of the Medici fame and fortune in the area.

Bangkok stars in worldwide premiere of new Netflix series on iconic Asian cities

For the first time, tat partners with global streaming service to promote thai tourism and culture through film and series..

Bangkok, 21 January, 2022 – The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has entered into an official partnership with leading streaming entertainment service Netflix to promote the tourism and culture of Thailand, with Bangkok starring as the first feature destination of a new Netflix documentary series that premiered worldwide yesterday (20 January).

Mr. Siripakorn Cheawsamoot, TAT Deputy Governor for Marketing Communications, said “Officially partnering with Netflix is a key milestone in our effort to continue promoting Thai tourism through films, series, and documentaries that meet the tourists’ expectations of impressive experiences. This will help stimulate Thailand’s creative economy.”

Called ‘Midnight Asia: Eat · Dance · Dream’, the new documentary series exclusively on Netflix is about a night-time journey through six iconic Asian cities – Bangkok, Seoul, Tokyo, Taipei, Mumbai, and Manila – and the food, art, night entertainment venues, and subcultures that help make each of them some of the world’s most fascinating metropolises.

The premiere episode on Bangkok celebrated the launch of the series, the first time TAT and Netflix have partnered to promote the destination of Thailand. The episode was commissioned by Aloke Devichand, Netflix’s Original Documentary Programming Manager, who also partnered with Pailin Wedel to produce ‘Hope Frozen: A Quest to Live Twice’ – Thailand’s first Emmy award-winning documentary.

Mr. Siripakorn said “Over the past years, many foreign films have been filmed primarily in Thailand. With these films available on Netflix, audiences of series and documentaries around the world can see Thailand from different lenses, especially the unique cultural tourist spots and beautiful nature, making Thailand more attractive to both Thai and foreign tourists.”

Inspired by the partnership with TAT, Netflix – which has 214 million paid memberships in over 190 countries – is keen to produce more world-class content on Thailand. Mr. Yongyoot Thongkongtoon, Netflix Director of Content for Thailand, said: “Together, we’d love more opportunities to present Thailand as a culture-rich country and one-of-a-kind travel destination to global audiences.”

Some titles are artistic, hinting at a deeper meaning. Others are starkly literal. Pedal the World belongs in the second group. Why? This is a documentary following one man's trip around the world by bicycle.

That man is Felix Starck, who also happens to be the director of Expedition Happiness. If you enjoyed that documentary, you'll likely enjoy this one as well. Keep in mind that this is an earlier effort, so it may be a little rough around the edges compared to the newer movie.

This is a must watch for bicycle enthusiasts and anyone obsessed with world travel.

Father-son bonding is a different experience for everyone. When comedian Jack Whitehall was young, he and his father Michael never really bonded.

Now, Whitehall wants to bring that spark back by taking a gap year and traveling with his father. Watch as this comedian trades the stand-up stage (see the best stand-up comedy specials on Netflix ) for a tuk-tuk in Thailand.

What better way to spend time with your parent than by going on a trip. But what happens when you have a slightly grumpy father and you are the overly energetic one? Quite a blast, actually, Watch as this father-son team gets into accidents, goes to odd places, and attempts to open up to one another.

8. Paul Hollywood’s Big Continental Road Trip

For most people, where you travel is the important part. For others, it's how you get there that matters. Car enthusiasts definitely fall into the latter group. If you count yourself among them, Paul Hollywood's Big Continental Road Trip should be next up in your Netflix queue.

This documentary follows the actor, baker, and part-time racing driver across a large swathe of Europe. The series sees Hollywood visit Italy, Germany, and France. In each hour-long episode, he chronicles the cars and culture of a given country.

If you're a fan of cars as well as the Great British Baking Show, don't miss this one.

9. Mountain

Feeling contemplative? Are you looking for a documentary that features breathtaking locations but takes a slower, more meditative approach? Mountain could be exactly what you're looking for.

Directed and produced by Jennifer Peedom, Mountain explores peaks around the world. Willem Dafoe narrates the film, occasionally reading passages from Robert Macfarlane's Mountains of the Mind.

Thai food is a favorite subject in these shows. Many connoisseurs and producers have flocked to the kingdom to explore the wide range of food we offer,  from casual street fare to extravagant serves at fine-dining restaurants. Netflix, in particular, has fun and comprehensive shows that dedicate an entire episode to our beloved cuisine. We’ve rounded up the best ones.

Chef’s Table (Volume 5, Episode 3)

One episode in the fifth installment of this long-running chef-focused show pays tribute to one of Thailand’s most recognized chefs and one half of Michelin-starred venue Bo.Lan—Chef Duangporn "Bo" Songvisava.

Chef Bo, who is joined by her husband Dylan Jones, discusses their mission to elevate sustainable Thai fare using elusive royal recipes and go-green principles. You’ll learn more about Thai ingredients and cooking techniques, and you’ll also get super inspired by Bo’s words of wisdom, such as “It’s not only cooking. It’s not only eating. It’s how you live your life.”

Jack Whitehall: Travels with My Father (Season 1, Episode 1 to 3)

This isn’t particularly a food show, but more of a travel reality show that follows London comedian Jack Whitehall and his father Michael Whitehall on a journey around the world. 

The duo kicks off their adventures in Thailand, where they deal with culture shock from north to south. Father and son cautiously plow through the street food in Isaan and then lounge around in the fine-dining surrounds of Sirocco in Bangkok. They even take us to see the infamous Full Moon Party in Phuket—a pure dose of nostalgia for those who’ve experienced it.

Somebody Feed Phil (Season 1, Episode 1)

This show follows Phil Rosenthal, the creator of popular American sitcom Everybody Loves Raymond , as he explores the culinary culture of leading destinations across the globe. Bangkok is featured in the inaugural episode, wherein Phil takes the audience to iconic eating spots like Lat Mayom Floating Market and The Authors’ Lounge at Mandarin Oriental Bangkok. He also goes to Chinatown, where he gets a taste of the notorious “king of fruit” durian, and, of course, to Michelin-crowned street food restaurant Jay Fai.

Phil is like that effusive uncle you can’t help but love, even when he unapologetically expresses his gastronomic orgasms. His show will make you fall in love with Thai food all over again but, at the same time, make you suffer from hunger pangs.

Street Food Asia (Season 1, Episode 1)

Thailand can easily claim the title of the world’s street food paradise, and the premiere episode of Street Food Asia helps prove the representation. Throughout 30 captivating minutes, the show introduces you to a number of street food restaurants and vendors in Bangkok.

The best bit is an intimate interview with Supinya "Jay Fai" Junsata, Bangkok’s queen of street food and purveyor of the city’s tastiest crab meat omelette and tom yum soup. In between cooking shots, wherein Jay Fai is seen manning a wok in goggles and a beanie, she reveals how she painstakingly built up her award-winning restaurant.

Ugly Delicious (Season 1, Fried Rice Episode)

David Chang’s Ugly Delicious stands out from other food shows on Netflix for how it delves into the cultural aspects of one particular dish more than just the look and taste of it.

In the “Fried Rice” episode on season one, Chang weaves the cultural history of the Asian staple into the issues of immigrants in the United States. This leads to a segment at Night + Market, a Thai restaurant in Los Angeles run by Kris Yenbamroong, who reveals his cooking secrets and relates his experience as an immigrant restaurateur in the States.

15 Travel Documentaries to Fuel your Wanderlust

If there are travel documentaries being broadcast on British TV, we can guarantee we’ll be ready with remote control in hand. When we’re back home in London , we spend hours on the sofa, fuelling our wanderlust by watching others travelling the world.

For us, watching travel documentaries helps fill those gaps between trips. For an hour or so we’re transported somewhere far away from the normality of home. We reminisce of faraway places we’ve been to if filming locations are in countries we’ve already visited. Or we get excited and inspired if filmed in countries we are yet to discover. Both are just as enjoyable.

Along with cookery shows and reality TV, there are so many travel documentaries to choose from. Via terrestrial TV, Sky, Netflix, Amazon or other online sites, they’ll be a documentary to satisfy anyone’s wanderlust.

We’ve picked 15 of our favourite travel documentaries from the more thoughtful travel subjects to less serious and humorous ways of seeing the world. Viewing access to these shows changes regularly so we’d suggest entering the title into Google to find which viewing platforms are currently available at the time of reading this post.

Regular guys Scott Wilson and Justin Lukach are bored. So what do they do? Take a road trip, of course. Departures follows them and their cameraman, Andre Dupuis, as they journey to countries all over the world. We love the non-premium feel of this show. It’s just three nice Canadian guys filming themselves travelling the world. They make an effort to visit hard to get to places and interact with locals wherever they go. This brings experiences that not all travellers get to do. Departures make the top of our travel documentaries list. 

Walking the Nile & Walking the Himalayas

Levison James Wood is a British Army officer and explorer. He’s best known for his extended walking expeditions in Africa and Asia. Over the course of nine months from 2013-2014, he undertook the first ever expedition to walk the entire length of the river Nile .

In 2015 he walked the length of the Himalayas. Both adventures were commissioned into four-part travel documentaries for Channel 4 in the UK. His journeys bring amazing landscapes, local interaction, massive highs and some disastrous lows.

Tropic of Capricorn and Tropic of Cancer with Simon Reeve

Simon Reeve makes two “round the world” trips following the tropic of Capricorn in the Southern hemisphere and the tropic of Cancer in the Northern hemisphere . These two travel documentaries include visits to one or more countries, in Asia, Latin America, Africa, the Caribbean, Arabia and Hawaii. Simon explores daily life for locals, tourists and wildlife, as well as the history, culture and politics which all prove quite varied.

Ben Fogle: New Lives in the Wild

New Lives in the Wild is a television series on UK’s Channel 5 hosted by adventurer Ben Fogle . The series is about meeting people who live in some of the most remote locations on earth. More often than not, these are western families or individuals who have had enough of the big city rat race. They’ve escaped to remote parts of the world to set up new lives in the wild.

Examples are the Alaskan wilderness, a Polynesian Island and the Arizonian desert. These are courageous and inspirational people who Ben stays with for a few days to learn how they live so remotely.

World’s Most Dangerous Roads

World’s Most Dangerous Roads is a British BBC TV series first aired in 2011. Two celebrities per episode are filmed as they journey by a 4×4 vehicle along roads considered among the world’s most dangerous. Episodes include the Death Road in Bolivia and the Ho Chi Minh trail in Vietnam . Many of the chosen celebrities are comedians so some humour is added to what otherwise is a fascinating and educational watch.

Long Way Round

In 2004, Ewan McGregor , Charley Boorman and cameraman Claudio von Planta, travelled from London to New York City on a motorbike. In the process, they created some awesome travel documentaries. The journey visited thirteen countries, starting in the UK, then passing through France, Belgium, Germany, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Ukraine, Russia, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Canada, and the USA, ending in New York City for a cumulative distance of 18,887 miles (30,396 km).

They take the time to visit a variety of sights and landmarks while travelling, including the Church of Bones in the Czech Republic, the Mask of Sorrow monument in Magadan, Russia, and Mount Rushmore in the USA. They, of course, encounter many hurdles along the way. It wouldn’t be a great adventure without them.

Top Gear: Road Trip Specials

This one’s a bit of a wild card as Top Gear does not usually fall in the travel documentaries category. However, we love the Top Gear road trip specials. Why? Because they take place in some incredible world locations. Typical Top Gear antics include driving around Africa trying to find the source of the Nile, going off road from Bolivia to Chile and getting across the length of Vietnam on two wheels with a budget of just $1000. We know a lot of what happens is scripted but we still can’t help but enjoy these adventurous episodes.

An Idiot Abroad

An Idiot Abroad is a British travel documentary / road trip comedy television series broadcast on Sky 1. It’s  created by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant and starring Karl Pilkington . The ongoing theme is that Pilkington has no interest in global travel, so Merchant and Gervais make him travel to the Seven Wonders of the World while they stay in the UK and monitor his progress.

Most of each episode focuses on Pilkington’s humorous reactions to cultural differences and idiosyncrasies in the countries he visits. He also gets set hilarious tasks, often not related to why he believed he was there. The silliest of our travel documentaries but well worth a watch. 

Asian Provocateur

Comedian Romesh Ranganathan is sent by his mother on a ramshackle odyssey around his parents’ homeland of Sri Lanka in an attempt to connect him with his roots. Romesh is the kind of guy who likes his home comforts and finds friendliness uncomfortable so Sri Lanka is not his ideal place to visit. As he quotes, ‘I was a bumbling Englishman in a Sri Lankan disguise’, so you can imagine the funny situations he gets himself into.

Our Guy in India

Motorbike racer  Guy Martin buys a Royal Enfield motorbike at a Delhi market, gets a traditional Hindu blessing and sets off on a 1000-mile motorbike trip.  Guy explores a rarely-seen side of modern India as he heads to one of the world’s maddest bike races. He travels through various parts of the country coming across all kinds of interesting people and sights on the way. Does he win the race at the end? You’ll have to watch to find out.

The Mekong River with Sue Perkins

TV presenter Sue Perkins embarks on a life-changing, 3,000-mile journey up the Mekong , South East Asia’s greatest river, exploring lives and landscapes on the point of dramatic change. It’s a really interesting watch, learning how 1000s of people live on and around one of the world’s great rivers. There’s plenty of smiles and tears as Sue listens to the locals stories and changing way of lives.    

The Secret Caribbean with Trevor McDonald

The newsreader and journalist, Sir Trevor McDonald embarks upon a stunning and epic journey across the Caribbean. From the Bahamas in the North to his birthplace Trinidad in the south, uncovering the sun-kissed islands along the way.

In this three part series, Sir Trevor visits The Bahamas, Cuba, Jamaica, British Virgin Islands, Montserrat, Barbados, Grenada and Trinidad. It’s an unforgettable expedition as he experiences the huge contrasts in cultures and lifestyles these islands have to offer.

Travel Man 48 hours

If you’re looking for more laughs with your travel documentaries then Travel Man is the British documentary series for you. It features presenter Richard Ayoade , travelling to a different location each episode with a celebrity guest. Ayoade takes a ruthless approach to getting the maximum from each city break. Cramming as much as he possibly can in 48 fast and funny hours. His unique presenting style has us laughing through every episode.

Charley Boorman by Any Means

By Any Means , also known as Ireland to Sydney by Any Means , is a television series following Long Way Round star Charley Boorman . Travelling from Wicklow , Ireland, to Sydney , New South Wales, Australia, it features him completing the journey using 112 modes of transport and only travelling by plane when absolutely necessary. A real epic adventure!

Joanna Lumley’s Trans-Siberian Adventure

Joanna Lumley embarks on the world’s greatest train journey for this three-part documentary series. Travelling from East to West, she departs from Hong Kong across 5,777 miles of both Asia and Europe. Joanna travels through seven time zones, taking in an immense panorama of vistas and cultures, people and places, before her final arrival in Moscow.

New on Netflix in May 2024 — all the new shows and movies to watch

I t’s almost the start of a new month, so it's time to take a look at all the new movies and TV shows set to arrive on Netflix in May 2024.

The biggest new edition is the return of the romantic period drama “Bridgerton." The hugely popular Netflix original series is back with the first part of its third season on May 16, and will no doubt lead to us all speaking with a posh English accent for days after bingeing. Other top TV show picks this month include true crime-inspired thriller “Bodkin” and new episodes of the glossy reality show “Selling the OC.”

If you’re in the mood for a movie, Netflix has plenty to offer. There’s a rom-com pairing Brooke Shields with Miranda Cosgrove as a mother-daughter duo, and “Unfrosted” which is a ridiculous-looking spoof from Jerry Seinfeld about the creation of the humble Pop-Tart — yes, this is a real movie debuting on the streaming service this month and not an out-of-season April Fools joke. 

It’s set to be a busy month for new arrivals on Netflix and to make sure you don’t miss anything we’ve got a full guide below. There’s also a list of what’s leaving in May so you have a final chance to watch before they’re gone for good (or at least, gone for now).

New on Netflix in May 2024: Top picks

'a man in full'.

Based on the best-selling novel by Tom Wolfe, “A Man in Full” sees Jeff Daniels play a real estate mogul named Charlie Croker who faces sudden bankruptcy and must defend his crumbling empire from politicians and businessmen looking to capitalize now they smell blood in the water. Croker is a crude and rude tycoon who doesn’t plan to fall from grace without a fight and is ready to deploy every dirty trick to protect what he has built. The limited series will also star Diane Lane, Lucy Liu, Tom Pelphrey and William Jackson Harper. This six-episode drama comes from Dave E. Kelley who also created “Big Little Lies” for HBO and “The Lincoln Lawyer“ for Netflix.

'Selling the OC' season 3

“Selling the OC” is back for its third season with the agents of The Oppenheim Group’s Orange County office ready to compete for the top listing in the cut-throat world of luxury real estate all over again. Of course, these brokers won’t just be attempting to sell multi-million dollar houses in sun-soaked California, expect more office drama as these workers definitely don’t leave their personal lives at the door. This spin-off from “Selling Sunset” has become just as popular as its parent series, and the return of “Selling the OC” is sure to be the month’s highlight for many Netflix subscribers. If you want even more reality TV set in the world of real estate, be sure to check out “Buying London” which is also set to land on Netflix in May (date TBC).

'Unfrosted' 

When I first heard about “Unfrosted,” I assumed it was a gag rather than a real movie, but nope, this comedy about the race to win the breakfast war between Kellogg’s and Post in the 1960s is totally legit. Directed, co-written by and starring Jerry Seinfeld, “Unfrosted” is a hilarious spoof of movies like “Blackberry” and “Air”. It chronicles the creation of the Pop-Tart, a "revolutionary" toaster pastry that is still enjoyed by families across the world to this day. Seinfeld has assembled a comedy super cast for this ridiculously silly flick with plenty of very funny people joining him including Melissa McCarthy, Jim Gaffigan, Amy Schumer, Hugh Grant, Peter Dinklage, Bill Burr, Dan Levy, James Marsden and Max Greenfield.

'Bodkin' 

Inspired by our society's current true crime obsession, but based on an original idea rather than a true story, “Bodkin” sees a group of podcasters travel to a seemingly idyllic town in the gorgeous Irish countryside to investigate a string of strange disappearances that occurred decades previously. Once the true crime investigators arrive on the scene they quickly realize there’s something more sinister hiding beneath the surface and are drawn into a twisting mystery. A dark thriller, with comedic elements (Though creator Jez Scharf is keen to stress it’s “not a comedy”), Bodkin stars Will Forte, Siobhán Cullen, and Robyn Cara.

'Mother of the Bride'

From Mark Waters, the director of “Mean Girls” and “Freaky Friday”, comes a new romantic comedy starring Brooke Shields and Miranda Cosgrove alongside Benjamin Bratt and Chad Michael Murray. In this glossy flick, Lana (Shields) is stunned when her daughter Emma (Cosgrove) returns from a trip aboard with the news she’s getting married, in Thailand, in a month. If the shock engagement wasn’t enough to process, Lana is even more blind-sighted when she learns that Emma’s fiancé is the son of the man who broke her heart years earlier. Traveling to the destination wedding, what follows is several awkward encounters and maybe even a second chance at finding love. “Mother of the Bride” looks very cliché but also great fun.  

‘Bridgerton’ season 3 (part 1) 

For fans of Netflix’s hugely popular period drama, the wait is almost over, it’s time to break out your best fine China afternoon tea set as “Bridgerton” is (nearly) back after a hiatus of more than two years. “Bridgerton” season 3 will be released in two parts, with the first four episodes arriving in May, and the second half of the third season dropping in June. There will be plenty of juicy drama this season encompassing the entire cast but the big focus will be on Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan) and Colin Bridgeton (Luke Newtown), and there’s more than friendship brewing between this wallflower and the dashing world traveler. If you’ve yet to sample the delights of “Bridgerton” now is a good time to get caught up before May 16.

Move over “Rebel Moon” there’s a new blockbuster science-fiction epic in town and it’s called “Atlas”. This action movie stars Jennifer Lopez as Atlas Shepherd, a brilliant but unsociable data analyst with a deep distrust of artificial intelligence. She signs up to join a mission to the stars to capture a rebellious robot that is linked to her mysterious past. But when the mission takes a turn, Atlas is forced to trust AI to help her save all of humanity. Expect a fast-paced plot, and some timely themes, as well as a satisfying message about the importance of trusting others and letting your guard down. I'm not totally sold yet but I'm keeping my fingers crossed that “Atlas” is a little better received by critics than Zack Snyder’s aforementioned sci-fi flop.
