THAI TAXI TRIPS

Long-tail boats are more than just pretty things to photograph, though you'll surely be called to snap a few photos of them. As far as southern Thailand's seafarers are concerned, they're the original taxi. If you're up for a getaway, hop onto one of these water taxis for a day trip from Krabi or Phuket to quiet islands like Koh Poda or party spots like Koh Phi Phi.

BEACH-YA YOU WON'T WANT TO LEAVE

All of Thailand's beaches are amazing, but you're sure to notice some important differences. While the islands of the Andaman Sea (to the west and south of Phuket) feature dramatic cliffs and fluorescent waters, white sand and more muted shades of turquoise define the experience of swimming in the Gulf of Thailand south of Bangkok . Start your Southeast Asian Adventure in Thailand

While Krabi and Phuket have world-class beaches, you can find beautiful views all over Southeast Asia. THE PHUKET PERARL

While Phuket is where many travellers arrive in Thailand, it is also the perfect start to a Southeast Asian journey. Take long-tail boat trips to Koh Phi Phi or Koh Khao Phing Kan (aka 'James Bond Island'), or explore the inland part of the island, where you can walk the streets of old-town Phuket or enjoy a panorama from atop the aptly named 'Big Buddha'.

STEP INTO SOUTHEAST ASIA

Thailand is both a cross-section of Southeast Asia and a gateway to the region. Cruise through the Andaman Sea to Malaysia, or sail into the Gulf of Thailand and the South China Sea to explore destinations like Cambodia, Vietnam and the Philippines . Basic English is broadly spoken in areas of Thailand where tourists often visit, but learning some basic Thai will earn you many smiles.

Service of alcohol in Thailand is prohibited before 11 a.m. and between 2-5 p.m., so be sure to head to the bar at the right times.

To show respect for local customs, remove your shoes whenever entering a temple or a local person's home.

CUISINE HOW TO SAY 'DELICIOUS' IN THAI

Thai can be a difficult language for non-natives, but you should definitely learn the word  aroi , which means 'delicious'. It'll be the perfect way to describe the indulgent cuisine of the area, full of bright spices, pungent fish sauce and tangy vinegar.

WOK THIS WAY

Whether you eat it with shrimp, pork or chicken, few Thai dishes are more satisfying than stir-fried noodles, also known as pad thai. Stop by one of the food stalls on Charoen Krung Road or another of Bangkok's popular street food spots, where pad thai is traditionally cooked up with tangy-sweet paste of tamarind, a tropical fruit.

Spicy, creamy green curry is even more delicious in Thailand than it is at home. The creamy coconut milk base of this comforting Thai classic is made with fragrant green chilies, lemongrass, ginger and garlic. Make sure to order rice, since the dish is served a la carte here.

PAPAYA PRIDE

There's no better way to get a taste of Thailand's northeast Isaan cuisine than som tam, a salad made with shredded green papaya, fresh tomatoes, dried prawns, a squeeze of lime juice and as much or as little chilli as you like.

Family vacations -- and even cruises may be on your agenda – as school is about to let out. But with hurricane season set to last through the summer, safety is always key.

Scott Lara, a travel agent, talked about safety on cruise ships during hurricane season.

“A lot of people are concerned about traveling during hurricane season because of winds and rough weather, but the good news is the cruise lines spend billions of dollars to make sure the ship, the crew, and the passengers stay safe,” Lara said.

Lara said state-of-the-art technology is in place to stay ahead of the storm and cruises are able to avoid problem weather.

“Corporate like in Miami will let cruise lines know, ‘hey there’s something in the area, turn left, turn right’ to keep passengers safe,” Lara said.

He also said one thing you should not overlook is travel insurance. When selecting a policy, make sure there’s coverage for weather-related disruptions. But also, don’t forget to read the fine print.

“There’s lots of things that can be involved. Like, what if you lose your bags, what if you miss a flight...but more importantly, what if you fall and hurt your arm or your leg? You want to be reimbursed for any kind of injuries you may have. So travel insurance is important, I advise everyone I know to purchase it,” Lara said.

Even though a ship may be outsailing a storm, that doesn’t mean you won’t run into some rougher than usual conditions. Lara says it’s a good idea to pack your sea-sickness meds before you board.

“Those products on the ship are going to be very expensive,” Lara said. “So, if it’s Dramamine or the patch behind the ear, maybe some Pepto Bismol just in case you get a little nauseous. But the technology on these ships, especially the large ones, like Icon of the Seas, Scarlet Lady, Oasis of the Seas, they have stabilizers to prevent the ship from going back and forth and up and down.”

As for having the best cruise time, Lara recommended-- contrary to popular belief-- try not to book your cruise at the last minute. Chances are, if you do that, all the best cabins will be booked up. And as always, just be aware of what’s happening with hurricane season and have a plan.

Royal Caribbean cancels all cruises to popular destination due to gang violence

G lobal cruise line operator Royal Caribbean has extended its cancellation of ship stops to Labadee, Haiti, due to ongoing violence in the region, the company announced.

Royal Caribbean cruises to Labadee will be canceled until at least September, according to a report from Royal Caribbean blog . Guests who booked cruises for summer and early fall are being notified by the company of the changes. Some trips have been replaced with another port or sea day while others have been canceled and refunded.

In March, Royal Caribbean announced it would suspend visits to Labadee through the end of May.

“We have not had any security concerns; this was done out of abundance of caution,” Jonathon Fishman, director of corporate and incident communications for The Royal Caribbean Group, told the Miami Herald .

Labadee is a private beach resort located on the northern coast of Haiti, which maintains sovereignty over the 260-acre area but leased it to Royal Caribbean in 1985. The exclusive resort is fenced off from Haiti and has its own security.

Haiti, in recent months, has been overwhelmed by civil unrest and violent gangs, which has forced the closing of the country’s main international airports, burnings of police stations and prison raids. About 2,500 people were killed or injured by gang violence in Haiti from January to March, according to the United Nations Integrated Office .

Haitian Prime Minster Ariel Henry in March announced he would resign from his position as the country works to establish a transitional presidential council.
