a man rides an stationary bike in front of a large window

Gear-obsessed editors choose every product we review. We may earn commission if you buy from a link. How we test gear.

To keep you riding consistently , build strength , and save you from abject boredom, virtual cycling challenges could offer the key. With a variety of challenges to fit almost any riding schedule and ability, you can choose a challenge from this list to kick the new year into gear.

So whether you need a few rides to dust off your gears or want an ultra-long sufferfest to get you to the top of high peak, there’s a challenge suitable for every rider.

8 Virtual Cycling Challenges to Conquer This Year

You never truly know what to expect from a race or challenge until you go full throttle and enter one. But with these virtual cycling challenges, you can expect to log a certain number of miles or participate in workouts over a designated period. Though most of them are indoor challenges, at least one gives you the option to test your watts outdoors, and some of them will require a paid subscription.

Most of these virtual challenges are app-based so you can set goals and track your progress in the app to ensure you fulfill all your training needs this season. Before you begin, you will need some cycling gear : a bike (obviously), GPS computer, smart trainer or smart bike, cadence sensor, and heart rate monitor.

1. FulGaz Grand Tour

Goal: Build riding consistency (with some competition)

Price: $15 per month/$126 per year

App: FulGaz

Prize(s): A two-day trip for two people to Monterosa, Italy; a Volta Catalunya VIP experience for two people; four Race Across Series entries to either Belgium, Paris, Switzerland, or France races to a distance of choice; and 21 Precision Fuel and Hydration e-gift cards.

The second phase opens on January 15, 2024 and features rides through some of the most breathtaking vistas in France. From riding through a medieval Red Village to putting down the hammer on the Rocamadour individual time trial, these workouts are slightly longer than those in the first leg of the tour. You will travel through Spain in the final leg of the tour, which opens on January 29, 2024. Though workouts will taper between about 40 minutes and an hour and a half, efforts are still high. Routes include everything from extended warmups with less than 200 meters of elevation to variable 16-percent inclines along La Victoria.

For a chance to win a prize, you must complete all 21 stages between January 1, 2024 - February 11, 2024 at 11:59 pm, share a picture of your favorite ride(s) on Facebook or Instagram following the FulGaz guidelines (see here ).

2. 2024 USA Cycling Esports League and National Championships

Date: December 2, 2023 – January 27, 2024

Goal: Compete in 2024 USAC National Championship

Price: $15 per month/$149 per year plus license cost

Prize(s): Zwift virtual championship jersey for winners

The third-annual Esports National Championships hosted by USA Cycling, Zwift , and Echelon Racing Promotions is currently underway. The six-race series kicked off with the first three races hosted on December 2, 16, and 30, 2023, which served as qualifiers for the USA Nationals Championship set for January 6 to 7, 2024. Even if you missed the qualifiers, you can still participate in the series as additional races will be offered on January 13, 20, and 27.

To compete in any of these races, you must have a Zwift membership, Zwift Power profile –a free account that requires a separate registration and tracks your race results—a current and valid USA Cycling license, and U.S. citizenship or permanent residence.

Each event will differ and total race distances will vary between 25 to 46 kilometers. You can race in a criterium , hill climb, time trial, gravel, and two rolling segments.

To ensure racing in a virtual world is fair, Zwift uses Category Enforcement —riders will compete against competitors with similar functional threshold power (FTP). With only women’s and men’s fields, racers will be grouped according to FTP correlated categories—A through D. For example, women riders in Category A must have an FTP greater than or equal to 3.88 watts per kilogram body mass, while women riders in Category D must have an FTP of less than 2.625 watts per kilogram body mass.

3. The Wahooligan Tour

Date: February 25, 2024 – March 2, 2024

Goal: Complete workouts in a given stage within a 50-hour window

Price: $15 per month/$149 per year plus $20 donation

App: Wahoo SYSTM

Prize(s): Earn a digital Wahoo badge

During the Wahooligan Tour , a seven-day challenge, you can do good for your body while raising funds for the Davis Phinney Foundation . Founded by former professional cyclist and Olympian Davis Phinney, the non-profit aims to spread awareness and to support those affected by Parkinson’s Disease.

During this cycling challenge, you can expect to be tested by a range of workouts across the Wahoo X platform—from the borders of Sufferlandria and beyond—to test your mental and physical limits.

Unlike most virtual challenges, you race against yourself and the clock, not other riders. With the goal of building consistency, you will have a 50-hour window to complete each stage of the Tour throughout the week. Additionally, to boost motivation, Wahoo will host live sessions and one week after the Tour concludes, finishers will be randomly selected for a number of prizes. You can boost your prize selection chances by increasing donations or fundraising during the Tour.

4. Everesting

Date: Year round

Goal: Climb the height of Everest

Price: $29 or free to do on your own

App: Strava and Zwift (or anywhere you want to track your elevation gain)

Prize(s): Entry into Everesting hall of fame if using apps

Everesting , the challenge of riding almost 29,029 feet—the actual elevation of Mount Everest—in one attempt is hard but not impossible. You can choose any climb, whether indoors or outdoors, and repeat the hill as many times as necessary to log the required elevation. Everesting has no time limit and only one rule: No sleeping allowed.

To best prepare, you can use the Everesting calculator to determine how many times you will need to summit your hill of choice. If you’re not sure where to start, reference a study published in Scientific Reports that suggests elite cyclists—riders able to push 2.5 to 3.0 watts per kilogram body mass consistently—should select a hill with gradients greater than 12 percent, while amateur and recreational cyclists—riders pushing less power—should select hills with a gradient of 10 percent or less to minimize the time to complete the Everesting challenge.

If you want to make it official, when riding indoors, the Everesting challenge must be completed on Zwift. For all other riders, the challenge must be recorded on Strava. Once finished, riders should enter the Strava link of their Everesting climb on the Everesting site . All submissions are approved by hand and final approval is completed within one week.

5. Strava Ride Challenges

Goal: Various

Price: $12 per month or $80 per year

App: Strava

Prize(s): Earn a digital finisher’s badge

You can kick the year off with month-long challenges of varying distances, elevation, and time. All challenges can be completed using a handcycle, virtually or outdoors, and all cycling activities labeled “Everyone,”“Only You,” or “Followers,” will count toward the rider’s position on the Strava leaderboard. All rides must be uploaded within three-days of the challenge ending to count.

So whether you’re interested in completing a Gran Fondo (62.1 miles), climbing 7,000 meters (22,965.9 feet), riding 200-kilometer (124.3 miles) or 600-kilometer (372.8 miles) in a month, there’s a challenge for you to work toward. Ride activities also count toward other Strava challenges including 15-minutes of activity three days a week and 30-hours or 400-minutes of activity in a month.

6. The Annual 2024

Date: January 1, 2024 – December 31, 2024

Goal: Stay active

Price: $44 per month

App: Peloton

Prize(s) : Digital badge

The fifth iteration of the Annual Challenge aims to help Peloton subscribers build consistency throughout the year by tracking active minutes across all disciplines—cycling, treadmill, rower, or cross-training workouts on the Peloton App.

With 13 tiers–1,000 to 10,000 minutes, 15,000 minutes, 18,000 minutes, and 20,000 minutes–you can work your way up the leaderboard while conquering each tier. With over 88,000 participants registered, you will have plenty of company throughout the year.

7. Sunday Race Club Series

Date: Every Sunday

Goal: Build consistency and strength

Price: Free

App: MyWhoosh

Prize(s): Approximately $17,000

MyWhoosh provides a number of weekly cycling challenges, including a Sunday challenge that offers a significant cash prize of about $17,000.

With four men’s and women’s category races hosted every Sunday, riders of all abilities can test their skills against other competitors worldwide. To ensure a fair and competitive racing environment, all riders must participate in the MyWhoosh Power Passport Test. Based on these results, MyWhoosh categorizes riders every week based on available participants. In short, Category 1 riders demonstrate a stronger racing ability than Category 4 riders.

You must complete a pre-race verification before applying to race in the “In Venue” virtual world. After completing three events, you can qualify to compete in fields of up to 600 participants. The top five finishers each week are eligible for payout. Prize money will be awarded to winners of each qualifier race of the month—one each week—and the final race of the month. Payout can take up to ten weeks to be processed and proceeds are deposited into the winner’s bank account.

8. Rapha Festive 500

Date: December 24, 2024 – December 31, 2024

Goal: Ride 500 kilometers

Prize(s): Earn a digital Strava badge

In the soon-to-be 14th year of this global cycling challenge, the Rapha Festive 500 challenges you to conquer 310.6 miles between Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve. You must register on Strava and brave whatever elements old man winter throws at you. Later this year, you can opt to tackle the miles solo or subscribe to the misery loves company mantra and clip in with ride partners, or roll as an entire club.

If you’re in need of a club, you can find Festive 500 riders in Bentonville, Arkansa; Boulder, Colorado; Chicago; Los Angeles; Miami; New York City; San Francisco; and Seattle.

Version 1.1

This app has been updated by Apple to display the Apple Watch app icon. Small bug fix.

Ratings and Reviews

Not ipad friendly..

The one thing that makes this APP not so good is that it crashes if you turn your iPad to landscape and the APP will crash as soon as the video expands to fill the screen. This needs to be fixed on IOS 16.3 Then it will be great.

Very realistic!

I love this App. I haven’t seen all the videos yet, but most and they work! Very realistic rides and easy app to use. Excited for my indoor cycling now!

Not as promised

- promised support for up to six users. The app has no way to add additional users. - would not allow me to add to iPad without paying again - will not work in landscape mode (phone turned sideways)

I’m new to FulGaz. How do I get started?

Download FulGaz and set up a free account

FulGaz is offering new subscribers a 30-day free trial, no credit card required.

Downloading the trial gives you full access to FulGaz with no restrictions on content, or how often or how far you ride. If you’re returning to FulGaz for another go, send FulGaz a support ticket and they’ll hook you up with another trial on the house.

Connect your devices

When you load up FulGaz and hit Get Started, you’ll be greeted with a pairing screen. Here your smart bike/trainer/speed sensor will be picked up and listed. Select the devices you’d like to connect and click Let’s Ride.

Pro tip: If you can’t see your devices when trying to connect, they are most likely paired with another app (RGT, Rouvy, Zwift). You will need to deselect your trainer from that app’s pairing screen, quit that app, and restart FulGaz.

Set your preferences, weight, and slope scaling

Click the settings icon to take a moment to set your display preference (metric or imperial). For the most realistic experience, enter your weight and bike weight. There are many other settings here; it’s best to get a feel for riding FulGaz first before adjusting these. Start at around 60% uphill to get the feel. You can adjust this in ride also.

Pro tip: If you find the hills too hard, you can adjust the Slope Scaling, this is essentially the “trainer difficulty”. Adjusting this won’t make you faster, but it will make hills easier!

Download the Virtual Tour video and ride

FulGaz suggests downloading the virtual events ahead of time. For any event, you must download the video. Before the event, test your set-up with something from the Easy collection. These rides will give you a good “feel” for how FulGaz looks and interacts with your trainer or smart bike.

Get event-ready

Before you start any rides of the Virtual Ride Trifecta, make sure you turn up at the start line ready.

Here’s a quick checklist

  • Download the ride ahead of time.
  • Stay hydrated – have at least two bottles of water available.
  • Have a towel and fan to help you cool down.

What equipment do I need?

To participate in this event from the comfort of your own home you will need some cycling equipment.

  • Smart trainer (e.g., Elite Suito , Wahoo Kickr) or a smart bike.

Basic Set-up

  • Standard trainer
  • Speed sensor if using a standard trainer.

Connection equipment

FulGaz works on Apple TV, macOS, an iPhone or iPad, and Windows and Android devices. To get started, you will need to download the app onto your respective device. For an excellent viewing (and riding) experience, we highly recommend using an Apple TV connected to your lounge room TV or monitor.

Please note: Rides in “event mode” will force you to download the ride before starting. This ensures an uninterrupted riding experience, so make sure you download the ride well ahead of time to avoid delays.

When is the Virtual Ride Trifecta available?

All events in the Virtual Ride Trifecta will become available in the Fulgaz app on January 14, 2023. You’ll be able to ride all winter, through March 27, 2023!

Is the TD Five Boro Bike Tour still happening in May?

Yes, the Virtual TD Five Boro Bike Tour will not replace the 2023 Tour. We will host the TD Five Boro Bike Tour on Sunday, May 7, 2023. For more information on the 2023 Tour, please click here .

Do I have to ride the events at a certain speed?

Nope! Riders can enjoy the Virtual Ride Trifectta at whatever speed they please.

When will I receive a promo code for my 30-day free trial?

Registered riders will receive a promo code for their 30-day free FulGaz trial shortly before the Virtual Ride Trifecta opens in January 2023.

Please note : If you wish to participate in the Virtual Ride Trifecta after your 30-day trial period, you will need to subscribe to a FulGaz membership.

I live internationally. Can I still receive a medal?

Unfortunately, at this time we cannot ship medals to international riders.

International riders can purchase a Carbon registration if they wish. However, because we cannot ship medals internationally, their contribution will be processed as a donation to Bike New York. If you accidentally purchased a Carbon registration and do not want your contribution processed as a donation to Bike New York, please email [email protected].

What are the terms and conditions for the Virtual Ride Trifecta?

VIRTUAL RIDE TRIFECTA TERMS AND CONDITIONS

Swag and Prizes

If you registered for Steel or Carbon, you are eligible to receive certain items (as described below).

Only residents of the United States are eligible to receive the medal.

  • If you registered for Steel, you will receive a digital finisher certificate.
  • If you registered for Carbon, you will receive a digital certificate and a medal.

To receive the medal, Bike New York will verify your identity (including name and address). You agree to cooperate with Bike New York in all aspects for the verification. You agree that personal data, especially your name and address, may be processed, shared, and otherwise used for the purposes and within the context of the Virtual Ride Trifecta, including to verify your identity, postal address, and telephone number or to otherwise verify your eligibility to receive the medal. You have the right to access, review, correct, or delete any personal data held by Bike New York by writing to [email protected]

If you have questions about the delivery of your medal, please contact Always Advancing at [email protected].

Help! The Virtual Ride Trifecta doesn't appear in the FulGaz app. What should I do?

If you don’t see the Virtual Ride Trifecta on FulGaz, please restart the app or tap UPDATE RIDE LIST in Settings to refresh the ride collection – the events should appear after that.

Virtual Bike Tours in Italy

Virtual Tours in Italy

For Italy, like the rest of the world, the Covid-19 outbreak was unexpected. Nobody could have planned for such a situation. We understood the impact of this pandemic  as soon as we got back from what was supposed to be the launch of the 2020 bike tour season, the amazing Strade Bianche Bike Tour .

Once the whole of Italy was put in lockdown, we fastened our seatbelts and put our thinking caps on.

Firstly, we started by implementing “ Smart Working ” from home, guaranteeing the safety of the C+ Team. Secondly, we got together virtually and started sharing ideas on how to keep the Ciclismoplus  wheels spinning.

Many interesting ideas flew from one skype call to the next. It was great to see everybody’s minds working for the future of ChronoPlus .

By combining creativity and research, the light bulb moment came to us.

We decided to go right back to the beginning  by asking ourselves:

‘”Why do we do what we do and how can we bring our philosophy forward during Covid-19?”

Finally we asked ourselves what the future product will look like.

Why do we do what we do?

We are enthusiastic about cycling and we love the precious sensations it can give us. The feeling of fresh air on our faces, the warmth of the sun on our skin, the myriad of colours our eyes will encounter.  Our heart beating as the road climbs higher up, the soul hungry to know what’s behind the next curve. We know the value of these emotions and how pleasant it is to share them with others; this is why we design and organize authentic “ Made in Italy ” cycling experiences .

virtual bike tours

How to continue doing what we love during Convid-19?

Just like when you get lost on a bike ride and then you suddenly recognize a land mark and realize just where you are, likewise we felt a light bulb moment, and could clearly envisage the path ahead. We began making contact with other businesses in the cycling industry, sharing our thoughts and listening to their comments. We told ourselves:

“We will not let this situation stop us from doing what we love. If people cannot come to Italy, then we will bring Italy to them.”

In which ways ? Virtual Bike Tours in Italy

We are happy to announce that during this difficult  period, we have also become a Virtual Cycling Touring Company designing unique Virtual Bike Tours of the best rides in the spectacular surroundings Italy has to offer.

Covid 19 was just the spark to enable us to develop this exciting project which from now on will enrich our strategic positioning, making us become a digital company in all aspects.

As the great Einstein said:

“It’s in crisis that inventiveness is born, as well as discoveries made and big strategies. He who overcomes crisis, overcomes himself, without getting overcome.”

The first initiative..

virtual bike tours

What’s next…

After the great success of the “ ENDU Virtual Granfondo Spring Edition ” we are now ready to begin the next initiative of this project.

That is by giving people from all corners of the globe the opportunity to cycle from the comfort of their own home in unique Italian locations such as Lucca , Chianti , 5 Terre , Dolomites and many more.

In line with our vision, our plan is to offer not only exhilarating virtual rides in amazing destinations but also to create complete “ Made in Italy ” virtual cycling experiences by combining virtual cycling in Italy with the Italian culture; this is the reason that led us to create some new formats, including:

Virtual Bike Tour in Italy + Wine Tasting

If you love c ycling in Italy and the amazing culture that is behind the fabulous taste of Italian wine then this is the Virtual Bike Tour for you. Thanks to our partnership with some of the best wine producers in the country you will have the chance to enjoy cycling in some of Italy’s best destinations, learning about and tasting the best wines from that region.

Virtual Bike Tour in Italy + Italian lessons

Passionate about cycling in Italy and learning the mother tongue language? During these virtual bike tours we will give you the chance to ride and learn all the phrases and so much more you’ll need to converse with the locals during your future bike tour in Italy.

Virtual Bike Tour in Italy + Cooking lessons

Love cycling in Italy and the Italian Food culture? This is the Virtual bike Tour for you. We will combine riding and learning to cook the best Italian dishes from the comfort of your own home. Bringing those classic Italian aromas to your kitchen.

Beginning of a long journey…

virtual bike tours

This, for us is only the beginning of a long journey. In the coming weeks and months we will announce other innovative authentic virtual cycling experiences ‘Made in Italy’.

It will be great to share these unique cycling experiences with people from all over the world, even if it is at a distance, anticipating the pleasure of meeting and riding together in the future, along the most beautiful and hidden roads of our wonderful country.
