Why Kelly McGillis Isn’t in Top Gun: Maverick: “I’m Old and I’m Fat, and I Look Age-Appropriate”

The post Why Kelly McGillis Isn’t in Top Gun : Maverick: “I’m Old and I’m Fat, and I Look Age-Appropriate” appeared first on Consequence .

Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer returned to the Navy for Top Gun: Maverick ,  but one familiar face missing from the sequel is Kelly McGillis , who played Cruise’s love interest in the 1986 original. According to McGillis, she wasn’t asked to join the film, and she matter-of-factly cited her appearance for her exclusion.

Entertainment Tonight asked McGillis way back in 2019 if the makers of Top Gun: Maverick had asked her to be in the film. “Oh my god no. They did not, nor do I think they would ever,” she replied, almost laughing at the idea. “I mean, I’m old and I’m fat, and I look age-appropriate for what my age is, and that is not what that whole scene is about.”

Fortunately, McGillis didn’t seem to be upset by her very realistic explanation. “I’d much rather feel absolutely secure in my skin and who and what I am at my age, as opposed to placing a value on all that other stuff,” she said. The 64-year-old actress told ET that she left Hollywood to get sober and focus on raising her family, and isn’t necessarily itching to see the sequel anyway.

“I guess it depends on what kind of reviews it gets,” she said. “I’m not racing to the theater, and I’m not racing away from the theater to see it.”

McGillis played astrophysicist and training school instructor Charlie Blackwood in the original  Top Gun. In this iteration, Jennifer Connelly portrays Maverick’s new love interest, Penny Benjamin. The long-awaited sequel was directed by Joseph Kosinski and also stars Miles Teller, Jon Hamm, Ed Harris, and Glen Powell.

35 Years On, Why I've Never Lost That Loving Feeling For 'Top Gun'

I’m only slightly ashamed to admit that the film I’d been most looking forward to seeing on a big screen post-vax was the extraordinarily belated sequel “ Top Gun: Maverick ,” which after three decades of anticipation and two years of release date delays had finally been scheduled to open this coming Fourth of July weekend. After all, what could be a more symbolically appropriate way to rally back from quarantine than an Independence Day IMAX screening of a gaudy, all-American extravaganza that takes place in an alternate universe where the Navy lets 58-year-old men fly fighter jets? Alas, citing concerns with international vaccine rollouts, Paramount moved the movie once again, this time to the week before Thanksgiving — as if anyone wants to watch people play beach volleyball in November.

In the meantime we’ll have to make do with the original, I guess. That’s right, “Top Gun” is roaring back to your local AMC theaters this weekend to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the film’s release, as well as something called “ Top Gun Day ,” which is one of those meaningless memetic holidays people invent as an excuse to talk about stuff they like on the internet. (Hilariously enough, “Top Gun Day” falls a few days before the film’s actual May 16 release date because the guys who came up with it made a typo on their merchandise designs.) Remastered in Dolby Vision and Atmos for this reissue, the 1986 movie was also recently made available in a new 4K UltraHD Blu-ray edition, which of course I ran out and bought right away because I find “Top Gun” to be politically repellant, logically incomprehensible and aesthetically irresistible. It’s a big, dumb movie that was probably bad for the world, and it’s also totally awesome.

Released six months after Rocky Balboa won the Cold War by defeating Ivan Drago in the ring, “Top Gun” offered an even more ecstatic escape into triumphalist, Reagan-era revisionism, removing all the blood, death and despair from combat — replaced by backlit beefcake shots and rah-rah aspirational recruiting mottos about being the best of the best. These clean-cut, freshly scrubbed flyboys weren’t haunted war criminals like John Rambo , they’re upbeat athletes aspiring to excellence. “Top Gun” might be framed around the military, but it’s a sports movie through and through. The screenwriters even invented a fake trophy competition and added a locker room to the Navy’s elite Fighter Weapons School as a way of reassuring audiences that all this war stuff is just fun and games.

Producers Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer were hot off of “Flashdance” and “Beverly Hills Cop,” but their stroke of genius here was hiring brash British ad man Tony Scott to direct. A Royal College of Art graduate who’d crashed and burned in Hollywood a few years earlier with his inscrutably esoteric lesbian vampire movie “The Hunger,” Scott scored the “Top Gun” gig thanks to a car commercial he’d helmed in which a jet plane races a Saab. The kind of blustery, larger-than-life figure one rarely finds in the film industry anymore, Tony Scott was almost always attired in short shorts and a safari vest, puffing on a cigar beneath an omnipresent pink baseball cap. Few filmmakers from the era were so adept at exulting in their own ridiculousness, which made him the ideal director for “Top Gun.”

Scott supposedly threw a book of Bruce Weber photographs onto Bruckheimer’s desk and announced that’s what the movie was going to look like. To call “Top Gun” over-stylized would be an egregious understatement, as every angle is finessed with smoke machines and soft gel lights to a degree of giddy absurdity. Witness instructor Kelly McGillis’ entrance into the cadets’ class, filmed low and from behind to show off her seamed stockings and stiletto pumps. The Navy made their actual academy classrooms available for filming, but of course, Scott found them dreadfully boring and instead staged the lessons in a sunlit hangar in front of an F-15 and a gargantuan American flag. (I love the lonely chalkboard shunted off to the side.) Also, her lipstick.

Every scene of “Top Gun” is shot and cut like a commercial — all shimmering sunsets and golden magic hours with cool motorcycles and vintage cars. People wear heavy leather bomber jackets in the San Diego summer simply because they look so great in them. Everyone in this movie is always glistening for some reason, and any given frame could be put on a poster. Characters speak almost exclusively in catch-phrases and slogans they repeat back to each other later for applause cues and the soundtrack is wall-to-wall chart toppers and classic oldies. (Note the mercenary brilliance of the monologue during which Maverick talks about his mother’s favorite song, never mentioning the title nor the artist to give the filmmakers maximum leeway when negotiating the movie's music rights.) “Top Gun” looks and sounds like the longest advertisement you’ve ever seen, but what exactly is it supposed to be selling?

The Navy famously set up recruiting tables in theater lobbies, no doubt enlisting an entire generation of cadets disappointed to discover that their classes were taught indoors and never by Kelly McGillis. It’s an aesthetically jingoistic film according to the flattering photography of flags and uniforms, with still unparalleled aerial footage of these majestic silver phallic symbols whizzing around at the speed of sound. Yet the screenplay is clear as mud when it comes to cryptically exonerating Maverick’s deceased dad for I think maybe bombing Cambodia, and nobody’s ever been really sure if it ends with our boys starting World War III. “Top Gun” clearly hasn’t the slightest interest in — nor any ideas about — the problematic geopolitics it keeps stumbling over, because the movie is really just selling swagger, sunglasses and speed. Well, all those things and also Tom Cruise, who in the span of these 109 minutes went from a promising young dork dancing in his underwear in “Risky Business” to an instant American icon.

I’ve always considered Cruise one of our most underrated actors, but between us, he’s not very good in “Top Gun.” He still hadn’t learned how to modulate his voice yet and falls back on that jerky smirk far too often, especially in the chemistry-free scenes he spends sexually harassing Kelly McGillis. Of course, none of this matters because Scott and cinematographer Jeffrey Kimball frame and light Tom Cruise as a modern-day deity, embodying all the cocky aspirations of America’s recently restored confidence whenever he's putting on a pair of aviators. His physicality is extraordinary, a diminutive god among taller, lesser men. Characters are constantly telling Maverick how amazing he is, and even when Maverick isn’t in a scene people only talk about Maverick. I saw “Top Gun” in the theater when I was 11 years old — one of the neighborhood kids and I were thwarted in our efforts to sneak into Sylvester Stallone’s grisly vigilante cop movie “Cobra” so we had to settle for this PG alternative — and even though the film hadn’t been our first choice for that particular afternoon, when it was over we both wanted to be Maverick.

“Top Gun” didn’t have a massive opening the way blockbusters do today, and it actually got clobbered that Memorial Day weekend by competitors “Cobra” and “Poltergeist II: The Other Side.” But the movie stuck around all summer, thanks to repeat viewings and rapturous word of mouth, not to mention a smash soundtrack album that kept cranking out hits. The film’s Oscar-winning love theme “ Take My Breath Away ” remains composer Giorgio Moroder's towering masterpiece, with Berlin vocalist Terri Nunn cooing over billowy synth bubbles that make the world feel like it’s moving in dreamy slow-motion every time you hear it. 1980s soundtrack staple Kenny Loggins was a last-minute replacement for the group Toto on the Moroder-penned kickoff track “ Danger Zone ,” and the singer later confessed that his bizarre enunciation of the title’s two words was a feeble attempt to mimic the inimitable accent of his musical hero, Tina Turner. (This is one of those things that once you notice, you will never be able to unhear it. You're welcome.) Even Harold Faltermeyer’s instrumental “ Top Gun Anthem ” got radio airplay, as this summer movie lingered in the box office top 10 until almost Thanksgiving, when it finally began to fade from theaters, presumably because nobody wants to watch people play beach volleyball in November.

Val Kilmer and Tom Cruise in "Top Gun." (Courtesy Paramount Pictures)

Ah yes, about that volleyball scene. Every generation thinks they’re the first to discover the hilarious homoeroticism of “Top Gun,” a subject dissected at amusing length by Quentin Tarantino in the otherwise forgotten 1994 rom-com “Sleep With Me.” It’s no stretch to say that Cruise has considerably less chemistry with Kelly McGillis than he does with flyboy rival Val Kilmer, the two literally snapping at each other half-naked in their fictitious locker room. (When I spoke to Kilmer before the Boston Film Festival screening of "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" back in 2005, he laughed and acknowledged "it was recently pointed out to me that I'm really f---ing gay in that movie." Then he jokingly accused Tom Cruise of intentionally sabotaging all the volleyball shots in which Val looked hotter.) During an amusing archival interview during one of the new Blu-ray’s generous supplements, Scott admits he “had no vision” for the volleyball game, which was requested by the producers to once again emphasize that this was a sports movie and not a war film. So Scott shrugged and “slicked the boys up with baby oil "and "shot it like a softcore porno.”

None of this went unremarked upon at the time. Critic J. Hoberman’s Village Voice review was titled “Phallus in Wonderland,” and he drew angry letters from regular readers after writing, “the screen is so packed with streamlined planes and heat-seeking missiles, wagging forefingers and upright thumbs that, had Freud lived to see it, he might be excused for thinking ‘Top Gun’ an avant-garde representation of Saturday night at the Saint Marks Baths.” (Well, the movie was designed to look like a book of Bruce Weber photographs, after all.) At an early screening for midwestern exhibitors, it was sheepishly suggested that maybe they should beef up the hetero love story a little bit?

So two new scenes were hastily shot scant days before the release, while the film was already being mixed. In that bit with Maverick and McGillis in the elevator, the actress is wearing a baseball cap because it was now months later and her hair no longer matched the character’s. Meanwhile, Cruise’s coiffure is all slicked down and soaking wet because by then he was busy shooting Scorsese’s “The Color of Money,” for which he’d grown out a formidable pompadour. Scott was savvy enough to know we’d never stop to ask why Maverick might be stepping into a crowded elevator after just getting out of the shower, much as he knew we wouldn’t care about these characters’ mismatched haircuts and bad wigs during their later sex scene that, to preserve a PG rating, was restricted to the memorably acrobatic intertwining of backlit tongues. (“We only had time to set up one light,” cinematographer Jeffrey Kimball sighs defensively on the DVD.)

Ever-underrated, Tony Scott went on to helm meathead masterpieces like “The Last Boy Scout,” “True Romance,” “Crimson Tide” and his fantastic final film, “Unstoppable.” Scott was for so long a lowbrow pariah in critical circles, it’s been enormously gratifying in recent years to watch young writers latching onto his work, citing Scott’s formal innovations as the trailblazer in a school that’s come to be called “vulgar auteurism.” His big brother Ridley might have been more respectable and won Oscars for his visionary science-fiction pictures and humorless historical epics, but I always preferred Tony’s lowbrow laughs and his sense of what fun, silly things these big blockbusters could be. (To my knowledge, he's still the only director who has his entire filmography engraved upon his headstone .)

One of my dearest moviegoing memories was watching “Top Gun” at the Somerville Theatre’s 70mm festival back in 2017 , with a six-track magnetic soundtrack that shook the bloody walls and a loud, rowdy crowd that was the exact, perfect level of drunk for the occasion. Everybody was halfway between mocking the movie and adoring it — applauding every iconically absurd line. Seen up close and so massively large, there’s no mistaking “Top Gun” is the work of a disgruntled British art student having a bit of a laugh about all this admittedly awesome American nonsense. What makes the film so much fun is that you’re invited to share it with him.

Top Gun's Kelly McGillis Confirms What We Suspected About Tom Cruise's On-Set Behavior

Kelly McGillis short grey hair

Fans are eagerly awaiting Tom Cruise's fighter to kick the tires and light the fires in the long-awaited sequel  "Top Gun: Maverick,"  which,  after many delays , is finally set to hit theaters in May. Cruise is indisputably one of Hollywood's biggest stars and, at times, a polarizing figure due to his personal life. The three-time Oscar nominee has starred in over 50 movies and is also a successful producer (via  IMDb ).

Cruise is known for his work in well-known films like "Risky Business," "The Outsiders," "Legend," and "All the Right Moves," but his performance as daredevil Navy aviator Pete "Maverick" Mitchell in 1986's "Top Gun" is remembered as the one that made him a full-fledged movie star. The action flick, directed by the late Tony Scott, also stars Anthony Edwards,  Kelly McGillis , Val Kilmer, and Meg Ryan. In this year's "Top Gun: Maverick," Cruise is poised to return to the Naval Fighter Weapons School as an instructor who will train the latest crop of hotshot pilots.

McGillis, who played Charlotte "Charlie" Blackwood in the original film, revealed to  Entertainment Tonight  in 2019 that she wasn't asked to reprise her role in the "Top Gun" sequel. Instead, Cruise's character has a new lady in his life, Penny Benjamin, played by Jennifer Connelly ("A Beautiful Mind"). According to  CinemaBlend , Benjamin owns a bar near the famous flight school.

Due to some high-profile off-screen hijinks and a long association with the controversial Church of Scientology, Cruise has earned a bit of a mixed public reputation. With that in mind, you might expect that his on-set behavior matches his eccentric tabloid headlines. Not so, reports McGillis, who has only nice things to say about her former on-screen love interest, confirming our long-held belief that Cruise might be a little more down-to-Earth than his reputation suggests.

Kelly McGillis called her Top Gun co-star 'wonderful'

In a 2013 interview with the  Los Angeles Times , Kelly McGillis recalled that, except for Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer, the "Top Gun" cast stayed at the same hotel during the shoot and had a lot of time to bond. "There was definitely a big ensemble group camaraderie," she said.

She went on to say that Cruise was "incredibly respectful, polite, and very honest." Similarly, she had nothing but good things to say about the actor in a 2013 interview with Yahoo! Movies . "I think Tom is terrific. He's the sweetest guy," said McGillis. "He is very genuine and sincere and respectful. And I just loved working with Tom. I think he is wonderful."

Although the upcoming sequel has thrust McGillis back into the spotlight, the actress doesn't appear much interested in fame these days. In 2019, McGillis told ET, "To me, my relationships to other people became far more important than my relationship to fame."

McGillis also admitted that she hasn't kept in touch with her former co-stars, and at the time, she hadn't seen the trailer for "Top Gun: Maverick" and appeared somewhat ambivalent about watching the finished product.

Notably, "Top Gun: Maverick" actress Jennifer Connelly appears to share her predecessor's high opinion of Cruise , particularly when it comes to his professionalism and unparalleled work ethic on set.

"I've never seen anyone work harder, be more committed to his work," Connelly told  CinemaBlend  in 2020. "Every moment is an opportunity to do all that he can do to deliver the best thing that he can possibly deliver."

McGillis compared filming Top Gun to being at summer camp

In addition to enjoying her time working alongside Tom Cruise, Kelly McGillis told Yahoo! Movies that the entire "Top Gun" cast was close. She recalled that, after shooting, they would throw parties and play sports to unwind.

"We just had a good time. We all hung out and we would play tennis and basketball and it was just fun," she told the outlet. McGillis went on to say that it was like being at a summer camp where everyone worked together and played together afterward.

In 2019, she told ET that movies create unique relationships because they bring people so close for brief moments in their lives. "I think I've spoken to a couple of people occasionally, but the truth is, movies are very odd work situations because you have a lot of people who come together from all different parts of the world," she said.

Despite her positive memories of being on set and her appreciation for the life-changing role, McGillis has been honest about why she wasn't brought back for a sequel. Back in 2013, she speculated that she wouldn't be invited back because of her age and appearance.

"You hear women of my age talk about this all the time," she told the Los Angeles Times. "I think this industry is not particularly kind to women who are over 50. I am not into the coloring of my hair, doing the Botox and getting a facelift."

While she isn't involved with the upcoming sequel, McGill told ET that she's happy for Connelly to have the part.

"Top Gun: Maverick" begins playing in theaters on May 27.

Kelly McGillis Says She's 'Old,' 'Fat' And OK Being Left Out Of 'Top Gun' Sequel

Ron Dicker

General Assignment Reporter, HuffPost

Kelly McGillis , who played Tom Cruise’s love interest in the original “Top Gun” movie, said she was not asked to return for the upcoming “Top Gun: Maverick” sequel.

And she didn’t mince words explaining why she thinks that is.

Asked by “Entertainment Tonight” recently if the makers of the “Top Gun” sequel offered her a part, McGillis, 62, replied, “Oh my god no. They did not, nor do I think they would ever. I’m old and I’m fat, and I look age-appropriate for what my age is, and that is not what that whole scene is about.”

McGillis played Tom Cruise’s love interest, astrophysicist and training school instructor Charlie Blackwood in the 1986 original about cocky Navy fighter pilots. Jennifer Connelly has been cast as the new movie’s love interest of Maverick, played by Cruise, 57. “Top Gun: Maverick” also brings back Val Kilmer, 59, as Maverick’s rival Iceman.

McGillis didn’t appear to feel slighted by the snub.

“I’d much rather feel absolutely secure in my skin and who and what I am at my age, as opposed to placing a value on all that other stuff,” McGillis told “ET.”

McGillis said she’s not feeling the need for speed to go watch “Top Gun: Maverick,” scheduled to open in 2020.

“I’m not racing to the theater, and I’m not racing away from the theater to see it,” she said.

Top Gun ’s Kelly McGillis Gets Refreshingly Candid About Not Being Invited to the Sequel

cruise mcgillis aging meme

By Yohana Desta

Kelly McGillis and Tom Cruise in Top Gun.

Kelly McGillis, who memorably played love-interest Charlie opposite Tom Cruise in Top Gun, doesn’t seem to mind that she’s not involved in the upcoming sequel to the ’80s classic. In a refreshingly candid interview with Entertainment Tonight, the Golden Globe nominee said she wasn’t asked to be part of the film. And she’s not surprised, to be honest.

“I’m old and I’m fat and I look age-appropriate for what my age is, and that is not what that whole scene is about,” the 62-year-old told the outlet. “But...I’d much rather feel absolutely secure in my skin and who and what I am at my age as opposed to placing a value on all that other stuff.”

In the upcoming film, Top Gun: Maverick, Cruise reprises his role the titular Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, starring opposite Jennifer Connelly as the main love interest. In the ET interview, McGillis gave Connelly her blessing, saying “I’m glad for her.”

Since Top Gun, McGillis’s blockbuster career has slowed down, though she has continued acting and teaching acting classes in Asheville, North Carolina, where she has lived for several years with her two daughters Sonora and Kelsey Tillman. McGillis said she initially moved away from the industry in order to get sober.

“It was very challenging for me to have any kind of sense of self or self-identity or real self-worth other than what I did for a living,” she said. “And it just—it didn’t become a priority; what became the priority initially was raising my girls and being the best sober parent I could be.”

Her movement away from acting wasn’t necessarily intentional, she said. “It wasn’t like a major decision that I made to leave, it was just that other things became more important,” she added. “I love acting, I love what I do, I love doing theater, but I don’t know. To me, my relationships to other people became far more important than my relationship to fame.”

McGillis doesn’t keep up with many people from the Top Gun production, she said. “I don’t really keep in touch with anybody. I think I’ve spoken to a couple of people occasionally, but the truth is, movies are very odd work situations because you have a lot of people who come together from all different parts of the world.”

As for the new Top Gun, McGillis said she has not yet seen the new trailer, nor is she counting down the days until the film’s release.

“I’m not racing to the theater and I’m not racing away from the theater,” she said. “It’s not on my little list of things that I would like to get done.”

What happened to kelly mcgillis.

Known for starring with Tom Cruise in the original Top Gun, Kelly McGillis seemingly left the spotlight after her breakout role. Here's what happened.

  • Despite her absence in "Top Gun: Maverick," Kelly McGillis has had a successful career in film since the original "Top Gun" and has continued to act in various genres, particularly in the horror genre.
  • In 2009, McGillis publicly came out as a lesbian, reflecting on her struggles with self-acceptance and embracing her sexuality.
  • In recent years, McGillis has shifted her focus to raising her daughters, committing to her sobriety, and teaching acting at the New York Studio for Stage and Screen, while also managing her genetic condition, alpha one antitrypsin disorder.

Fans of the original Top Gun might be wondering what happened to Kelly McGillis, especially since she didn't return for the blockbuster sequel, 2022's Top Gun: Maverick . Although McGillis continued to nab parts in big-name Hollywood films post- Top Gun , nothing quite topped her back-to-back successes in the mid-80s. A year before 1986's Top Gun , she starred in the neo-noir crime thriller Witness alongside Harrison Ford. McGillis' breakout role in Witness earned her Golden Globe and BAFTA nominations, and helped her land roles in a spate of memorable, late-'80s flicks, including Made in Heaven , The House on Carroll Street , and The Accused .

Throughout the '80s and '90s, McGillis continued to work in film, television, and theater. In 1999, she starred in At First Sight , opposite Val Kilmer, proving that she still had the star power to sell films and command audiences. After appearing in queer cult film The Monkey's Mask and the Billy Zane-led direct-to-TV crime drama Morgan's Ferry , McGillis vanished from Hollywood for several years. While she'd eventually return to the screen, the actor ended a solid run in indelible genre-spanning movies. This gap in her filmography has pushed audiences who admire Kelly McGillis' work to wonder what she's been up to over the last several decades.

Kelly McGillis Returned To Acting In 2006 After 5 Year Break

For those wondering what Kelly McGillis has done since Top Gun , the list is long — perhaps surprisingly so. Apart from Witness , Top Gun is the movie most cinephiles associate her with, but she's had successes since the '80s blockbuster. After her stint in 2001's Morgan's Ferry , McGillis took a five-year break from acting. In 2007, she appeared on the screen again in the documentary feature Girl 27 , but, when it came to acting roles, McGillis returned to the craft in 2006, shooting a B-horror movie, Supergator , that would be released the following year.

While Supergator seems like quite the pivot, the monster movie marked a new chapter in McGillis' career. After the flick, she landed roles in several other sub-genre-spanning horror movies, from the post-apocalyptic vampire horror film Stake Land to supernatural horror flick The Innkeepers to the Sundance Film Festival-selected We Are What We Are . While the actor largely took a break from silver-screen projects, she appeared in archival footage for the documentary Val in 2021 and had bit parts in made-for-TV films and shows, including Showtime's The L Word and Syfy's Z Nation .

Kelly McGillis Came Out In 2009

Kelly McGillis has had two high-profile marriages to men — Boyd Black and Fred Tillman — that ended in divorce. After splitting from Tillman in 2002, McGillis left the spotlight for a bit. In 2008, she guest starred on The L Word , Ilene Chaiken's drama series that centered on lesbian, bi, and queer women living in Los Angeles. In the show, McGillis played Colonel Gillian Davis, an army officer who's unwilling to live openly in light of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell." To make matters worse, Colonel Davis seems eager to out one of the series' central characters, Tasha (Rose Rollins), after discovering Tasha's queerness.

Just a year after her appearances in several episodes of The L Word , the then-51-year-old actor came out as a lesbian in an interview with SheWired (via The Advocate ). In the interview, McGillis reflected on her life-long struggle to be open about her sexuality, noting that, as a young kid, she felt God would punish her for her queerness. Since 2009, McGillis has been able to live openly, noting that life is all about " growing and changing, and coming to terms with who and what you are, and loving who and what you are. "

Why Kelly McGillis Didn't Return In Top Gun: Maverick (Is She Retired?)

For those wondering where Kelly McGillis is in Top Gun 2 , look no further. Despite appearing in some of Top Gun: Maverick 's archival footage, McGillis isn't in the sequel. Director Joseph Kosinski has stated that the Maverick team was meticulous when it came to including legacy characters in the sequel: instead of leaning too much on pre-established characters, the movie aimed to set up new personalities. While the absence of Top Gun 's Charlie doesn't necessarily hurt Top Gun: Maverick , it's still a shame, especially considering that McGillis feels she was " look[s] age-appropriate for what my age is, and that is not what that whole scene is about. "

Kelly McGillis' Illness & Personal Life

Raising her two daughters and committing to her sobriety have been the central focuses in Kelly McGillis' life since she made the decision to leave Hollywood behind and settle in Hendersonville, North Carolina. In a 2019 interview, McGillis opened up about being diagnosed with a genetic condition called alpha one antitrypsin disorder (via Everything Zoomer ). Prior to settling in North Carolina, McGillis, understanding the importance of self-care and sobriety, committed to helping others who live with substance-use disorder at a New Jersey rehabilitation center. In 2013, Kelly McGillis became an acting teacher at New York Studio for Stage and Screen, proving her appreciation for the art form endures.

The Wilford Brimley Meme That Helps Measure Tom Cruise’s Agelessness

cruise mcgillis aging meme

By Ian Crouch

Simon Pegg Rebecca Ferguson Tom Cruise and Ving Rhames in the film “Mission Impossible—Fallout.”

Tom Cruise was about to turn thirty-one when “The Firm,” the film adaptation of John Grisham’s best-selling novel , hit theatres. In the movie, Cruise plays a hotshot boy wonder just out of Harvard Law, who takes a job as an associate attorney at a law firm that turns out to be washing money for the Mob. In a pivotal scene, he has a meeting with the firm’s fixer, played by Wilford Brimley, during which he is blackmailed with a series of incriminating photographs showing his character having an affair. The meaning of the scene is made clear by the disparities between the two men: Cruise, a young man, being let in on the slimy truths of the real world by Brimley, an old man. Later in the movie, Cruise beats Brimley up with a leather briefcase .

When “The Firm” came out, Brimley was fifty-eight years old—plodding, portly, with a gray walrus mustache, his grandfatherly mien in this case turned sinister. He was just two years older than Cruise is now, appearing boundlessly vigorous as the super-agent Ethan Hunt in the latest “Mission: Impossible” movie . Cruise has been very, very famous for the past thirty-five years, and in that time it’s been difficult to reconcile his unchanging appearance with the flipping pages on the calendar. It’s easier to track his movements through the six “Mission: Impossible” movies by his haircuts—short in No. 1, long in No. 2, short again in No. 3, etc.—or the size of his cell phone, than by changes to, let alone diminishments in, his face or body. He fixed his teeth years ago; he’s in better shape than ever. And so we are left to search for other ways to keep track of Cruise’s allegedly advancing years. Thankfully, the release of his latest summer blockbuster has resurfaced one of the surest methods: comparing him to his old scenemate Wilford Brimley.

This meme seems to have had its beginnings in 2011, when Cruise turned forty-nine, the same age that Brimley was when he began filming his role in Ron Howard’s movie “ Cocoon ,” from 1985, a kind of “E.T.” for the olds about a group of seniors living in a retirement community who are given the chance to live forever by leaving Earth on an alien spaceship. In the years since Cruise blasted through what I’ll call the Brimley Barrier, people online have continued to make the comparison between the two men, citing the fact that Cruise was a year, or two, or three years older than Brimley when he starred in “Cocoon.” Last month, a new tweet on the subject drew the attention of Brimley himself, who retweeted it and said, “This is still hard for me to believe.” Brimley, who is eighty-three, has settled into a late-life role as a meme machine , known among a younger generation less for his years of acting than for his role as the Quaker Oats pitchman, or for his pronunciation of the word “ diabetes ” as the television spokesman for Liberty Medical.

Barret Oliver and Wilford Brimley in the film “Cocoon.”

It’s hard to imagine Cruise ever talking about Medicare eligibility. On his way to sixty, he is literally still kicking (and punching and jumping and hanging and remembering his long-ago co-stars’ birthdays ), and doing so in a way that seems to go beyond the commonplace celebrity cosmetic trickery of the moment. He seems, in ways both inspiring and unsettling , to have figured something out. The comparison of Brimley and Cruise in middle age doesn’t just make light of the former’s premature fogeydom and the latter’s eternal youthfulness; it also highlights how the mores, signifiers, and very science of aging have changed—that sixty is the new fifty, which is the new forty, and so on. That Cruise is the new Brimley.

But in “ Mission: Impossible—Fallout ” there are a few fleeting signs that Cruise may be somewhat aware of the concept of aging. Even with the help of Henry Cavill, who, at thirty-five, is a year older than Cruise was in the first “Mission: Impossible” movie, Ethan Hunt cannot subdue a foe in an elaborate bathroom brawl. Later, Hunt pauses, a bit daunted and out of breath, before tossing an office chair through a window and then jumping out of it. And Hunt is succumbing to at least one unfortunate aging-man foible. As he grows older, his love interests are getting younger. Hunt’s ex-wife is played by Michelle Monaghan, who is forty-two; his new partner in love and mayhem is played by Rebecca Ferguson, who is thirty-four; and a likely contender for his affections going forward is played by Vanessa Kirby, who is just thirty.

Yet one needs merely to watch the latest movie’s stunning dénouement—a helicopter chase in Kashmir—to be reassured of Hunt’s still sure chokehold on father time, and to be reminded of the uncanny distances that Cruise is travelling beyond Brimley. In “Cocoon,” despite being reinvigorated by extraterrestrial intervention, the only athletic feat Brimley could manage was a boisterous cannonball off a diving board. Later in the movie, weighing the opportunity to leave with the aliens, Brimley’s character explains to his grandson, “We’ll never be sick. We won’t get any older. And we won’t ever die.” He decides, in the end, to go. Cruise, meanwhile, seems to have achieved the first two parts of that trifecta right here on Earth. And as for the last one, who’d be willing to bet against him?

Does Kelly McGillis Still Keep In Touch With Tom Cruise After Playing His Love Interest In Top Gun?

  • Kelly McGillis wasn't thrilled about playing Tom Cruise's love interest in Top Gun.
  • Despite her reservations, McGillis had a great appreciation for Tom Cruise.
  • McGillis and Cruise didn't spend much time together off-screen.

Kelly McGillis boasts a remarkable acting portfolio that spans film, television, and Broadway, but for most fans, her defining role remains Charlotte 'Charlie' Blackwood, Tom Cruise ’s love interest in the 1986 blockbuster, Top Gun.

So intense was the chemistry between Charlie and Maverick that many were convinced the two had been a real-life couple at some point. Decades after her performance took Hollywood by storm, McGillis would retreat from the limelight , opting for a more laid-back life in North Carolina. But the question lingers: does she still keep in touch with her Top Gun love interest, Tom Cruise?

How Did Kelly McGillis Feel About Playing Tom Cruise’s Love Interest In Top Gun?

It's been nearly three decades since Kelly McGillis shared the screen with Tom Cruise in the 1986 blockbuster, Top Gun, but the buzz around the role refuses to die down. While many consider the role her defining moment, the truth is, McGillis wasn't exactly thrilled about taking it on.

"I didn't want to do it – there. But because I'd done Witness, I owed Paramount another film, and my agent said, 'You have to do this.' I took one look at it and said, 'This is like a western in the sky - I don't wanna do this,'” she admitted to The Guardian in a 2001 interview .

"It wasn't about acting, it was about being a cartoon character. You know what I mean? I could have done it blindfolded,” she continued. “I was grateful for the fact that it gave me opportunities I wouldn't otherwise have had. But I showed up for work, did my bit, hung out with a bunch of boys, played baseball, and went home. It was like being at camp. Why they hired me I'll never know."

However, McGillis' sentiments about the role do not extend to her co-star Tom Cruise, to whom she gave a rather glowing review in her 2013 interview with Yahoo Entertainment . “I think Tom is terrific,” she said. “He's the sweetest guy. He is very genuine and sincere and respectful. And I just loved working with Tom. I think he is wonderful.”

Despite her glowing review, McGillis admitted that she and the Mission: Impossible star didn't spend a lot of time together off-screen. “I’d hang out more with the other guys than I did Tom and Val [Kilmer],” she said. “But I know Val from Juilliard. He was a year ahead of me. And he would hang out with us and Tom would come by occasionally but mostly it was me and the boys.”

Did Kelly McGillis Keep In Touch With Tom Cruise After Playing His Love Interest In Top Gun?

Despite her reservations about the role, Kelly McGillis delivered a spectacular portrayal of Charlie in Top Gun. In fact, her performance was so convincing that fans couldn’t get over the idea that she and Tom Cruise weren’t a real-life couple.

"They come in asking, 'Where's Tom?' And I say, 'I don't know. I guess he's somewhere else.' And they say, 'Well, aren't you married?' I mean, these are adults, for Christ's sake,” McGillis shared with Guardian in 2001. “I have to say to them, 'That was a movie – it was fake.'"

With such titillating chemistry, fans must wonder, did Cruise and McGillis keep in touch after their time on Top Gun lapsed? Well, it appears that the co-stars’ off-screen bond might not have been quite as potent as fans believed.

"Movies are odd things. I don't really keep in touch with anybody [from Top Gun]," McGillis admitted to Entertainment Tonight in a 2019 interview . "I think I've spoken to a couple of people occasionally, but the truth is, movies are very odd work situations because you have a lot of people who come together from all different parts of the world."

Why Didn't Kelly McGillis Reprise Her Role In Top Gun: Maverick?

Decades after Top Gun's spectacular theatrical run, the sequel to the 1986 blockbuster, Top Gun: Maverick, hit the big screen. Starring familiar favorites Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer, the film premiered to overwhelming acclaim, raking in a colossal $1.496 billion at the box office.

Noticeably absent from the cast lineup were the female leads from the prequel; Kelly McGillis and Meg Ryan. As it turns out, the two weren’t even asked to reprise their roles. "Those weren't stories that we were throwing around,” director Joseph Kosinski said of the omission in an interview with Insider . “I didn't want every storyline to always be looking backwards. It was important to introduce some new characters."

However, when speaking to Entertainment Tonight in 2019, McGillis had a differing view on why she wasn't asked to return. “Oh my god no. They did not, nor do I think they would ever. I mean, I’m old and I’m fat, and I look age-appropriate for what my age is, and that is not what that whole scene is about,” she responded when asked whether she’d been asked to reprise her role, adding, “I’d much rather feel absolutely secure in my skin and who and what I am at my age, as opposed to placing a value on all that other stuff.”

Despite being left out of the sequel to the film that made her famous, McGillis is still intent on reviving her career in Hollywood. “I do not get offered a lot of stuff because I kind of dropped out of the acting world for so long raising my kids -- that right now it’s like starting over,” she shared with Yahoo Entertainment. “And I do want to get older and I do want to be a character actress. You know my goal is to be like Jessica Tandy -- to be an older woman and really just secure in myself and I don’t want to have to try to be 30 for the rest of my life.”

What Tom Cruise And Kelly McGillis' Relationship Was Like On The Set Of Top Gun

Tom Cruise smiling

Tom Cruise charmed his way into the hearts of many after he starred as Maverick in the 1986 film, "Top Gun." In the movie, the daring and adventurous bad boy sparked a relationship with one of his teachers, played by Kelly McGillis . The chemistry between the two radiated off the screen as their steamy romance had people convinced the two were a real-life couple.

Many even questioned the status of their relationship years after the movie was released. McGillis shared that she constantly interacts with "Top Gun" fans asking where Cruise is. She told The Guardian , "They come in asking, 'Where's Tom?' And I say, 'I don't know. I guess he's somewhere else.' And they say, 'Well, aren't you married?' I mean, these are adults, for Christ's sake. I have to say to them, 'That was a movie – it was fake.'" Clearly, their on-screen chemistry was out of this world, but was their relationship as strong off-screen? Apparently so.

McGillis has detailed how close the entire cast was and compared the experience to "being at camp," per Movie Talk (via Yahoo ). She said, "Well, we had a lot of partying going on after work. You can imagine -– yeah we just all hung out together and went to the driving range and did things...We just had a good time." And as for her relationship with Cruise, the actor has continuously shared how amazing the "Mission Impossible" actor was on set.

Tom Cruise and Kelly McGillis' relationship soared

There have been plenty of instances where actors were totally repulsed by their co-stars , but Tom Cruise and Kelly McGillis did not have that problem. Instead, their friendship soared on-set and on film, and McGillis would be the first to admit it. The actor has gushed about her "Top Gun" co-star on several occasions. In her interview with Movie Talk, she shared, "I think Tom is terrific. He's the sweetest guy. He is very genuine and sincere and respectful. And I just loved working with Tom. I think he is wonderful."

Cruise was even a part of some of McGillis' highlights on the set, especially when filming got frustrating. She told Entertainment Tonight , "We had to get this one shot by an airplane and it was at golden hour, and I remember going back to that friggin' tarmac about 120 times (laughs)...So I do remember that and I just remember working with Tom — he's such a kind and generous and respectful person, he was just lovely to work with."

While they didn't fight like their iconic scene in the film, some fans thought that the romantic plot line between Cruise and McGillis was unnecessary. Even though the "Mission Impossible" actor once agreed, in an interview with  Roger Ebert , the star noted that he never blamed McGillis herself. Cruise only praised his co-star, calling her a "fantastic actor." Their friendship was stronger than ever on-set, but with the latest sequel, things might have changed.

Kelly McGillis wasn't asked to be in Top Gun: Maverick

You are truly a rarity if you are one of the few individuals who has not seen "Top Gun: Maverick." The sequel to the original 1986 film, "Top Gun," was a smash hit , despite it missing an important character. Fans of the original movie will notice that Kelly McGillis did not return as Tom Cruise's love interest in the sequel. Instead, she was replaced by Jennifer Connelly, who played Penny Benjamin and was briefly mentioned in the first film.

According to Insider , the director of the sequel, Joseph Kosinski, never considered bringing back McGillis. He shared, "Those weren't stories that we were throwing around. I didn't want every storyline to always be looking backwards. It was important to introduce some new characters." But, McGillis isn't convinced. The "Top Gun" actor revealed to Entertainment Tonight  that she thinks she wasn't asked to return because of her looks. She said, "I'm old and I'm fat, and I look age-appropriate for what my age is. And that is not what that whole scene is about."

Not only did McGillis lose her iconic role in the sequel, but she also lost her friendship with Cruise. When asked if she keeps in touch with anyone from the film, she revealed, "Movies are odd things. I don't really keep in touch with anybody. I think I've spoken to a couple of people occasionally, but the truth is, movies are very odd work situations..."

Kelly McGillis has been very upfront about why Hollywood is no longer courting her.

In an interview with ET  the 62-year-old actress - who diagnosed with alpha one antitrypsin disorder about five years ago - was unusually candid about why she was not asked to co-star with Tom Cruise in the Top Gun sequel titled Maverick.

'I'm old and I'm fat and I look age-appropriate for what my age is, and that is not what that whole scene is about,' said the star who played Charlie Blackwood, Maverick's instructor, in the 1986 hit film. 'But ... I'd much rather feel absolutely secure in my skin and who and what I am at my age as opposed to placing a value on all that other stuff.'

McGillis is five years older than Cruise, whose career momentum has kept going thanks mostly to the Mission: Impossible franchise.

But fame is behind Kelly, who moved to Pennsylvania in 2002.

And she told the site she is happy to see another actress take over. Cruise's love interest in the 2020 film is played by Hollywood vet Jennifer Connelly, best known for her Oscar-winning movie A Beautiful Mind.

Though she had an enviable career that included films such as Witness with Harrison Ford and The Accused with Jodie Foster, she walked away to raise a family.

And McGillis said she is happy where she is at these days.

'It didn't become a priority,' she said of her film career.

'It wasn't like a major decision that I made to leave, it was just that other things became more important,' she added later. 'I love acting, I love what I do, I love doing theater, but I don't know. To me, my relationships to other people became far more important than my relationship to fame.'

And Kelly also wanted to get sober and focus on her health.

And that was a smart move as several years ago she was diagnosed with the alpha one antitrypsin disorder.

Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency (Alpha-1) is a genetic (inherited) condition – it is passed from parents to their children through their genes. Alpha-1 may result in serious lung disease in adults and/or liver disease at any age, according to webmd.

Her love life also became fodder for tabloids.

In 2002 Kelly divorced her second husband, Fred Tillman, and in 2009, she publicly came out as a lesbian. In 2010 she went public with partner Melanie Leis in 2010, whom she is now split from.

Fame hit for Kelly in her late 20s.

In 1983, McGillis made her movie debut in the comedy-drama Reuben, Reuben after graduating from the famed Juilliard School.

Two years later, she got her big break in Peter Weir's dramatic thriller Witness where she played an Amish widow opposite Harrison Ford.

The following year, Top Gun made her a household name with Top Gun.

The movie grossed $356 million against a production budget of only $15 million.

McGillis then won critical acclaim as a lawyer defending a rape victim played by Jodie Foster, who took home a Best Actress Oscar, in 1988's The Accused.

Having survived a similar experience to Foster's character, McGillis felt compelled to share her story of being raped by two strangers when the movie was released.

'The first few weeks after the incident I couldn't eat or sleep. I twitched incessantly,' McGillis told  People in 1988. 'I would gasp suddenly without being able to control it.'

'When the project was finished, it was like a demon had been put to rest, but still I was struggling with publicly telling my story because I was afraid.'

After The Accused, McGillis floundered between critically panned movies like North and smaller roles in television movies.

Her personal life was taking a toll as well as she eventually had to deal with her closeted homosexuality and drug addiction.

While people called kelly mcgillis, 65, “fat” & blasted her for gaining weight, her former co-star tom cruise has been praised for his “fit body.”.

Kelly McGillis, renowned for her role as a flight instructor in the 1986 blockbuster “Top Gun,” skyrocketed to fame with her exceptional acting skills and distinctive voice. However, her journey has been marked by personal tragedies, including divorce, sexual assault, and the challenges of coming out.

Despite facing criticism and enduring personal struggles, including body image issues, Kelly has embraced her appearance, disregarding public opinion, and now leads a tranquil life, cherishing moments with her grandchildren.

Over her illustrious 35-year career in Hollywood, Kelly has left an indelible mark with her remarkable performances in films, TV series, and TV movies. Her breakthrough came with “Top Gun,” where she portrayed the love interest of Tom Cruise’s character, Maverick.

Prior to “Top Gun,” Kelly garnered accolades for her roles, earning BAFTA and Golden Globe nominations for her performance in the 1985 drama-crime series, “Witness.”

Despite her undeniable talent, Kelly did not reprise her role in the sequel “Top Gun: Maverick,” released in 2020, leaving many wondering about her whereabouts.

Reflecting on her time filming “Top Gun,” Kelly fondly recalls the camaraderie and fun moments shared with the cast. She particularly praised her co-star, Tom Cruise, whom she described as terrific, sweet, sincere, and wonderful.

Following “Top Gun,” Kelly’s significant role came in the 1988 film “The Accused,” where she delivered a critically acclaimed performance as a lawyer defending a rape victim, a role that resonated with her own experience of sexual violence.

In a candid interview, Kelly revealed being raped at knifepoint in 1982, an experience that left her traumatized and contemplating suicide. She attributed her survival to the support of her peers and educators.

After “The Accused,” Kelly continued to feature in successful films such as “North” before eventually stepping away from the limelight to prioritize family and her health. She candidly expressed that her relationship with loved ones surpassed the allure of fame.

Kelly’s personal life also made headlines, notably her public acknowledgment of her sexuality in 2009 and her marriage to Melanie Leis in 2010, which ended in divorce the following year.

Despite her notable absence from the sequel and her transformed appearance over the years, Kelly remains unfazed by societal expectations. She believes her age and appearance may have contributed to being overlooked for “Top Gun: Maverick.”

While endeavoring to lead a quiet life, Kelly faced adversity when she became a victim of a home invasion in 2016. Despite challenges, she remains resilient, focusing on what truly matters to her amidst the ever-changing landscape of Hollywood.

However, the actress believes her absence from the sequel stems from her refusal to undergo plastic surgery or alter her appearance by dyeing her gray hair blonde:

“I’d much rather feel completely secure in my own skin at my age than place value on external factors.”

Social media and media outlets have commented on McGillis’s current appearance, with many noting she looks “unrecognizable” compared to her appearance in the 1980s.

On Twitter, she faced criticism for aging and gaining weight, even being compared unfavorably to Tom Cruise, who is perceived to have aged more gracefully.

In another post, McGillis and Cruise’s past and present images were juxtaposed, inviting comments on their transformations. One user remarked:

“Yeah, Tom Cruise has aged well, maybe with a little help. Kelly McGillis looks significantly heavier and older. Aging isn’t easy. I stopped eating at 50 to avoid gaining weight.”

However, amid the criticisms, some have defended McGillis, labeling the negative comments about her body as “misogynistic.” Body-positive influencer Alex Light accused the media of sexism and fixation on women’s natural aging process:

“Women have the right to age naturally, gain or lose weight, grow gray hair, or dye their hair. We shouldn’t face scrutiny for our choices. Would this story be as sensational if it were about a man? I doubt it.”

Light added that women should be allowed to age without judgment from society or the media.

Despite the scrutiny, McGillis remains unfazed, asserting that she embraces natural aging and refuses to conform to societal standards:

“At 43, I couldn’t care less about people’s expectations of me. It’s a foolish way to live.”

She aspires to emulate Jessica Tandy, a confident older woman who embraces her age rather than striving to appear younger.

cruise mcgillis aging meme

McGillis, previously known for her slender figure and blonde curls, expressed satisfaction that actress Jennifer Connelly replaced her as Cruise’s love interest in the sequel. Connelly, also a Hollywood star, gained fame for her role in the Oscar-winning film “A Beautiful Mind.”

Five years older than Cruise, McGillis relocated to Pennsylvania in 2002, prioritizing her family over her career. Although she maintained her presence in the “Mission: Impossible” franchises, family remained her focus:

“I’m transitioning into a different phase of life. Raising my daughters and being a sober parent took precedence over my career.”

Now a mother and grandmother, McGillis abandoned Hollywood to rediscover herself:

“Finding my identity beyond my profession was a challenge.”

While she cherishes her quiet life, McGillis endured a harrowing home invasion in North Carolina in 2016. Reflecting on the incident, she revealed her decision to obtain a concealed carry permit for self-defense:

“I refuse to be a victim again.”

Embracing simplicity, McGillis prioritizes quality of life over career aspirations:

“I have a serene, uncomplicated life, and I cherish it.”

Although acting remains her passion, she seeks fulfillment beyond the entertainment industry:

“I’m drawn to a life of service to others, beyond acting. It’s rewarding to witness transformation and inspire hope.”

Grateful for her adventurous past, McGillis now looks forward to traveling and spending time with her grandchildren, content with the life she has created.
