WHERE BLACK CULTURE, COMMUNITY AND CONSCIOUSNESS MEET

The (One) Love Boat: Inside The Welcome to Jamrock Reggae Cruise

There were plenty of parties poppin’ in 2019 but, as we reflect on the best of all the revelry, there are a few that stand out above the rest. The “Welcome to Jamrock Reggae Cruise” is one of those annual events that tops the charts year after year — and 2019 was no different. You’ve had a chance to glance at this seafaring celebration, but now let’s go in for a closer look.

Now heading into its seventh year, the “Welcome to Jamrock Reggae Cruise” has grown gargantuan. So much so, that the founder, Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley, had to upgrade to a bigger ship on a different cruise line (Royal Caribbean Cruise Line) to accommodate the rapid expansion of the “bashment.” What was built on the foundation of his fan base has taken on a life of its own. The regulars have even become one big loving family . Every day and night a constant reminder that despite the “fuss and fight” of daily life, there are spaces like these where beautiful Black people can “get together and feel alright.”

Many made their first maiden voyage on the 2019 cruise, but the majority had three, four, five or more trips under their belt. A true testament to the sexy of this concert party experience. ( Pro-tip for first-timers: Pack an all-white outfit and be prepared to rep your country for the themed evenings! )

Because food is a super important feature of any cruise, you’ll be glad to know that there was enough all-you-can-eat fare from staple West Indian dishes to ballpark favorites. Vegan buffets, gluten-free spreads, deli counters teeming with cold cuts and cheeses, pastas, soups, pan-fried red snapper, curry goat, chicken and lamb, sliced slow-roasted roast beef, jerk chicken, assorted breads and pastries; beef and curry chicken patties (with coco bread) were on point like darts.

Every day on the Independence of the Seas was also packed with activities, from Nyahbinghi drums in the morning, to Yoga sessions and spa treatments, an onboard casino. Every night was filled with superstar performances on a massive sound stage system on the top deck (outdoors, the way Reggae is supposed to be heard), movie screenings and three simultaneous after-parties. “Gongzilla” and his team pulled out all the stops.

DAY ONE – SAIL AWAY

A “Sail Away Party” featured heavy-weight selectors such as Irie Jam’s Steelie Bashment and DJ Gringo. The showtime line-up featured the Mighty Diamonds, Everton Blender and the sultry superstar singer, Tarrus Riley. And yes, love was in the air, with a partygoer taking bended knee to propose during Riley’s performance of “She’s Royal.”

The (One) Love Boat: Inside The Welcome to Jamrock Reggae Cruise

After the show, the parties jumped off for “Bubble and Whine.” Couples snuggled and sipped drinks. “Modeling” big time in flashy fashions, gentlemen and “Rude Bwoys” mingled with the bountiful and beautiful Black Women as authentic Dancehall culture was displayed. Sounds included Shinehead’s Kingston 12 Hi-Fi, DJ Norie and the all mighty Stone Love.

DAY TWO – “ALL WHITE NIGHT”

The (One) Love Boat: Inside The Welcome to Jamrock Reggae Cruise

Tournaments galore! Dominoes, 3 on 3 Basketball and Football (not that one!). Artist meet and greets, designated areas for the children and a concert line-up stretching from the afternoon until the wee hours of the morning. Johnny Osbourne, Sister Nancy (BAM BAM!) and Pinchers graced the stage.

The (One) Love Boat: Inside The Welcome to Jamrock Reggae Cruise

Top bill included Ghost, Marcia Griffiths, and headliner Stephen “Ragga” Marley. Can’t forget to mention his daughter, Shacia Payne putting down the sounds. The day also featured an in-depth Q&A with “Jr. Gong.”

DAY THREE – OCHO RIOS

Arriving in “yaad,” the ship made its first stop at Ocho Rios. The crown jewel was the talent assembled for the cruise’s midpoint concert. Skip Marley, Christopher Martin, Popcaan, a commanding performance by the veteran “Warlord,” Bounty Killer and the headliner, performing for the first time on the “Welcome to Jamrock” stage, was Buju Banton.

The (One) Love Boat: Inside The Welcome to Jamrock Reggae Cruise

One couldn’t help but to be touched by the evening’s highlight of Banton kneeling before Stephen Marley and singing a song of heartfelt gratitude for his friendship as he revealed that it was “Ragga” who posted the bail that secured his release during the great tribulations of his US federal trial.

DAY FOUR – FALMOUTH/”REP YOUR COUNTRY” NIGHT

The (One) Love Boat: Inside The Welcome to Jamrock Reggae Cruise

Red, gold and green everywhere the eye may land, supplemented by the flags and clothing of what appears to be the whole of Africa and its diaspora.

The (One) Love Boat: Inside The Welcome to Jamrock Reggae Cruise

Rising star Koffee gave a “Toast” and brought us all to the “Rapture.” Morgan Heritage performed classic catalog cuts from their Grammy-Award-winning career and the night was capped off by Busy Signal followed by a four-way “Soundclash at Sea” that saw defending champion Tony Matterhorn make a “duppy” by Warrior Sound.

DAY FIVE – THE PARTY’S NOT OVER

A day full of top talent such as “Party Animal” Charly Black, Wayne Marshall and an exceptionally entertaining and energetic set by current dancehall dance king, Ding Dong and his Ravers Clavers. The night featured performances by Professor Nuts, a set by Julian “Juju” Marley that had to be taken into the Royal Theater due to rain, and “The Prophet” Capleton closing out the concert as Welcome to Jamrock Reggae Cruise’s final act.

If you are looking for an ultimate concert/party experience, then this is the cruise for you for true. But you may have to “hold yuh corner” a bit. The 2020 “Welcome to Jamrock Reggae Cruise” is already sold out. But give thanks, the waitlist is now open!

The immersive Jamaican excursion aboard the  Royal Caribbean Independence of the Seas  will set sail December 5-10, 2020 from Fort Lauderdale with stops in Ocho Rios and Montego Bay, Jamaica.

This 2020 on-sale announce is ahead of 2019’s cruise, which sold-out in record time, almost one year in advance, before announcing the lineup.  Rolling Stone  announced the news last December.

What to take with you

If you’re lucky enough to book a place on the Jamrock Reggae Cruise 2020, there are a few items that we’d recommend you take along. These include:

  • Swimwear: The best time to visit Jamaica is from mid-December to mid-April, so you’ll be sailing when the weather is at its hottest. This means you’ll need to pack plenty of swimwear so you have ample opportunity to soak up the sun.
  • Sunglasses: Given that the glare onboard can get pretty strong, we’d suggest taking along a pair of sunnies too. If you really want to make a statement, consider a classic option like the  Ray-Ban aviators , which deliver iconic style alongside exceptional UV protection.
  • Suncream: It’s important to keep your skin looking and feeling healthy, so don’t forget to pack plenty of sunscreen. Remember, if in doubt, go for factor 30 and up , because the rays on deck will most definitely be beating down.
  • Dinnerwear: During the day, you’ll likely spend most of your time lounging around on deck, but come evening, you’ll want to dress to impress. Make sure you bring your most glamorous attire along to perfectly showcase your sunkissed summer glow .

We look forward to seeing you aboard!

Welcome To Jamrock Reggae Cruise Returns With A Legendary Line-Up

Reggae fans are in luck. This year will mark the 7th installment of the Welcome To Jamrock Reggae Cruise, and it will be huge.

Amara Amaryah • Apr 27, 2022

jamrock cruise 2020 prices

Reggae fans are in luck. This year will mark the 7th installment of the Welcome To Jamrock Reggae Cruise, and we promise you, it will be huge.

The Welcome To Jamrock Reggae Cruise will return for its musical excursion across the Caribbean Sea and this year, the line-up and pre-contained excitement has gotten reggae fans worldwide eager for the December trip.

The dates will be December 7-12, 2022, sailing on Royal Caribbean’s Freedom of the Seas. Famously titled after Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley’s record hit ‘Welcome To Jamrock’, the cruise will take things to higher heights in 2022, making impressive progress from its already successful inception in 2014.

The six-day, five-night cruise will depart from Miami, Florida’s cruise port with stops in Montego Bay and Ocho Rios , Jamaica before returning.

After a two-year hiatus, Jamaican music from lovers rock to roots and beyond will be represented at this year’s cruise.

As the sixth cruise wrapped up in 2019, there were unforgettable performances by Stephen “Ragga” Marley, Taurus Riley, Koffee, Popcaan, Buju Banton, Skip Marley and many more. Given the situation with the global pandemic, the following two years halted the experience.

A Legendary Line-Up For The Welcome To Jamrock Reggae Cruise

This year the legendary Shabba Ranks, Damian “Jr Gong” Marley and Stephen “Ragga” Marley will hit the stage for what promises to be an explosive return. An additional bonus for those attending is the chance to see living reggae legend Burning Spear perform too.

“For one of my heroes to come and experience something that I was a part of building is a great feeling. This man has influenced me and here he is now performing on a stage that I’ve helped to build. I feel that with all the artists, really, but Shabba Ranks kinda special to me.” shared Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley in VIBE.

The cruise not only promises incredible live performances night and day, but also “opportunities to get up close and personal with musical guests. Late night dance parties with DJs and lots of other surprises!”

‘Jamrock’s’ first cruise off

There is still no word on the decision by Damian “Junior Gong” Marley and his team regarding cancellation of the Welcome To Jamrock cruise which was set to sail from November 30 to Decemb er 5.

It was scheduled to be the first of two voyages by the successful venture.

When the Jamaica Observer reached out to Marley, it was conveyed that he did not wish to comment at this time. He referred to a statement issued two weeks ago indicating that the cruise which features performances by top artistes will not take place due to “unforeseen circumstances”.

The statement further noted that passengers who were booked on the cruise, which was set to commence on November 30, will be refunded in full. Refunds were set to be processed during the week of February 17-21, and was expected to take approximately seven-10 business days to be credited to account holders.

A second cruise had been organised as the original voyage, set for December 5-10, was fully subscribed within hours of the dates being announced.

The cancellation represents a sharp change for Marley who had expressed optimism just one week before in an interview with the Jamaica Observer .

He shared that both cruises would have the same line-up of artistes and activities. The Grammy winner added that having two cruises back-to-back represented the next step in the growth of the Welcome To Jamrock brand, which is now in its seventh year.

“Realistically, we are doing the same cruise twice so we don’t have anyone feeling like they have been short-changed based on which cruise they went on. So, we are aiming at having both cruises be exactly the same,” Marley said at the time.

Marley and his team have already announced two-time Grammy winner Shabba Ranks as well as American hip-hop artiste Nas, among the cast.

Sailing on Royal Caribbean’s Independence of The Seas which has a capacity of 4,370 passengers, Welcome to Jamrock Cruise will set sail from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, with day stops in Ocho Rios and Montego Bay.

  • michael g 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Worst hop on/hop off EVER Waited for 40 minutes in the cold rain for a bus that never came... unacceptable. Traffic is so bad that when on a bus the previos day it was barely moving. My advice-get a subway pass and a good travel guide book and do sightseeing on your own! Read more Written October 24, 2018
  • Rebecca J 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Boat element was excellent We purchased a ticket online for the boat and bus for 2 days. The boat element was wonderful, we saw some amazing parts of Moscow along the river side. The bus element was very disappointing as it only started at 10am and was finished by 6:30pm. It was extremely warm when we were there and it would have been great to do the tour in the cool of the day. There was also no air conditioning in the down stairs part of the bus. They also turned away passengers at one of the stops as the bus was full and there was not another bus for 40 minutes. Read more Written September 26, 2018

  • Peter F 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Two Routes There is a short red route which depending on the traffic takes about an hour. The route is generally around the Red Square area. The ear phones were small and sometimes the commentary did not link up with the sites you were seeing. The green bus takes you on a longer route and ours took two and a half hours due to the heavy traffic. I would not recommend this trip unless it is raining or you want to fill in time. The sights we saw were nothing outstanding with plenty of time at certain stops for photos. Also the driver stop for a bite to eat at one stop. Read more Written July 30, 2018
  • Bernardo P 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Boat Trips Moscow, Russia Yesterday, I booked a boat trip with the GetYourGuide.com web page and was totally horrible, didn’t have audio guide as it shows on the picture-Nobody Talk-. The girl on the picture-light blue bag-ask for 100 Rubles for show her the QR Code while I had the Booking and PIN number cause she must see the vessel name-Didn’t say nothing and after she said board any vessel. I suggest take the trip and pay on site, avoid fake internet pages, there are many other services with a lot of entertainment, don’t take this ones. Read more Written July 14, 2018
  • Kathrynowl91 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Good way to see some sites We usually do these tours when we travel. They get you round and you see the sight . The traffic is quite heavy so it is a bit slow but there is not a lot they can do about it. We only did the red route. Just a note people don’t queue here when the bus comes it’s a bit of a free for all. Read more Written July 13, 2018
  • Daniyal91 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Was Ok.! Started our tour of moscow from here, We had got the 2 Day Pass with the boat ride. The route and the map was good but not well managed. The bus didn't stop at many points. Were were unaware a couple of times at what point we were and missed them. Headphones and maps were provided. Would recommend one should check out the route map before going and decide which places to stop in advance, this way one can manage and enjoy the tour more and us it more effectively.! The boat ride was Ok, a little crowded. No guide provided, just a boat ride with restaurant service Read more Written July 12, 2018
  • WilliamDyer 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Poor service on boat and too many waiting times on buses For the price, you should expect at minimum English speaking tour guides with decent experience, but at least in my case that did not happen both in buses and boats. And in the boat even tough we were 90% English speaking tourist at least, the tour guide spoke 95% of the time in Russia, and only 3 sentences in English, I really counted how many times she spoke in English. And at the end she asks us if we have any questions? Of course I told her I couldn’t ask her anything since I didn’t understand 95% of what she was saying. The boat tour is not worth it, just take the bus that would be my advice. Second minus is the waiting times, in the boat they made us wait an hour before it departed, and in many stops with the buses waiting times of 20-30 minutes. I actually think I lost that day around 2 hours doing nothing. Be careful. Read more Written July 10, 2018

Description

Highlights:.

  • Experience medieval Kitay Gorod (China town).
  • Wander picturesque Red Square and Alexander Garden.
  • Explore grand Christ the Savior Cathedral on our Red Square tour.
  • Breathtaking panoramic views from Patriarch bridge.
  • Enjoy a hearty lunch on the large open verandah and marvel at the stunning views of the Kremlin.
  • Learn about Russian culture from the local through relaxed cultural discussions.

Tour Itinerary:

Red square:.

Russia and Moscow are synonymous with Red Square and the Kremlin and that's hardly surprising as you'll find these places absolutely stunning!

  • - Walk-through the Resurrection Gate and don’t forget to flip a coin so you’ll be sure to come back one day!
  • - Visit the world's famous Kazan Cathedral .
  • - See the State Department Store (GUM), once the Upper Trading Stalls, which were built over a century ago and still operating!
  • - Admire the lovely St. Basil's Cathedral! The French diplomat Marquis de Custine commented that it combined "the scales of a golden fish, the enamelled skin of a serpent, the changeful hues of the lizard, the glossy rose and azure of the pigeon's neck" and wondered at "the men who go to worship God in this box of confectionery work".
  • - Walk by Lobnoye Mesto (literally meaning "Execution Place", or "Place of Skulls"), once Ivan the Terrible's stage for religious ceremonies, speeches, and important events.
  • - Entering the Alexander Garden , you’ll take in spectacular views of Russian architecture from ancient to Soviet times, as well as the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier with an eternal flame. Watch Changing of the Guard Ceremony every hour in summer and every half an hour in winter.

Kitai-gorod:

Stroll along medieval Kitai-gorod with its strong ancient Russia feel, known for its bohemian lifestyle, markets and arts.

  • - Nikolskaya Street. Here you will find the Russia's first publishing house, the second oldest monastery, and Ferryn Pharmacy, known as the number one pharmacy back in Soviet times and famous for its Empire-style architecture.
  • - Ilinka Street. The financial street of the Kitaigorod (China Town) district, where you’ll find the Gostiny Dvor (Merchant’s Yard), which is now a showroom for Ferraris and Maseratis. The street was designed in the 1790s by Catherine the Great.
  • - Varvarka street. The oldest street in Moscow, which dates back to the 14th century, and still has remnants of early Muscovite architecture, such as the Old English Court and the Palace of the Romanov’s.
  • - Kamergersky Lane. Only a small road of about 250 meters, it is home to some of the oldest artifacts of the city, as each building holds a fascinating story. Some of Russia's most famous writers, poets, and composers from as far back as the Golden Age of Russian culture, have lived or worked on this lane.

Historic City Center

Walk the historical old center of Moscow with its cool local vibe, including the main Tverskaya street , and indulge in desserts in the first grocery “Eliseev's store” , housed in an 18th century neoclassical building, famous for its baroque interior and decoration.

From our tour. Impressions of our American tourist:

At 3:30, as energy flagged, lunch was on the agenda at a Ukrainian restaurant.  Just in time!  We asked our guide to order for us.  We all had the same thing....borscht (the Ukrainian version has beans and more tomatoes than the Russian version, which has more beets and includes beef).

The special high bread served is called galushki.  Our main course was golubtsy...a dish of minced meat rolled in braised cabbage leaves.  Both dishes called for optional sour cream as a topping....of course, yes, please....I recommend it.

Full, satisfied, and completely refreshed, it was off to Red Square and St. Basil's and GUM department store.  Red Square is not so named because of the color of the brick walls of the Kremlin.  Rather the word for 'red' and the word for 'beautiful' are similar in pronunciation....and, there you have it.

As we made the turn by the National Museum in front of which is the mounted sculpture of the "Marshall of Victory," Giorgy Zhukov from WWII and caught our first view of St. Basil's, my friend and I simultaneously emitted "Oooohhhhh!"  There it was....the iconic onion domes of St. Basil's!  Hooray....it was open until 7....we had about 30 minutes and were allowed in, AND we could take photos with no flash.

Now, I can give you a taste of what we saw in the other cathedrals in Cathedral Square.  What we learned is that St. Vasily and St. Basil are one in the same....Russian/English.  He was a common man who wandered Moscow unclothed and barefoot.  But, all, even Ivan the Terrible, heeded his opinions derived from his visions.  Ivan had this cathedral built over his tomb.

As we exited and took photos up close of the onion domes, Inna presented us with chocolate (how did she know we were ready for another energy boost, and we each got a big piece of chocolate.  The baby's name pictured on the wrapper of this famous Russian chocolate is Alyonka....the Russian Gerber baby, don't you think?

One could wear out the credit card in GUM's (capitalized because it is actually a government abbreviation), but the 'kitty' and my credit card stayed in my pocket as we strolled through the glass-topped arcade.

We then strolled through some of Moscow's lovely pedestrian streets; paused to listen as a wonderful quartet performed Vivaldi's "Four Seasons" in an underground passage to cross the busy street (hooray!....we DID have our 'classical concert' experience after all; a request Alina tried in vain to fill because none was scheduled those days), saw the Bolshoi, which means 'big' (my friend has yet to recover that their performance schedule did not coincide with our cruise), saw the Central Telegraph Building, dating from the 1930's, and made our way to the Ritz-Carlton to see the night view of Moscow from the rooftop bar, called O2.

There were fleece blankets to wrap yourself in....yes, it got that cold when the sun set.  We each ordered something hot to drink...the ginger, mint, lemon tea served to me in a parfait glass (for 600 rubles...about $9....you pay for the view here!) was delightful and hit the spot perfectly.  It was time to call it a night....
