What is the interest rate on a Discover travel card?

Your interest rate will be determined when you submit your travel card application for a Discover it ® Miles card. The APR you qualify for depends on your credit history and other factors. You can see if you're pre-approved for a personalized offer now or apply for the travel credit card offer on this page. Remember: Discover it ® Miles has no annual fee .

What are the different ways I can redeem Miles?

When you think of the best travel credit card for you, you likely want a card with a signup bonus, a card that allows you to have flexibility when you travel, and a card with rewards that you can use for travel expenses—or in other ways, if you want. With Discover it ® Miles, you get all of that. And as soon as you start earning rewards on your card, you can redeem them as a statement credit for a previous travel purchase. Because once you make a travel purchase, you simply redeem your Miles as a statement credit towards that purchase. 1 So book the travel that works for you, and use your Miles to credit yourself back. Eligible purchases include airfare, car rentals, hotels, rideshares, gas stations, restaurants and more. 1 You can also use Miles like cash, without losing any value for your rewards. Turn Miles into cash in any amount, any time 1 , by depositing into your bank account; or use Miles to pay when you check out at Amazon. com 4 or when you pay with PayPal. 5 However you redeem, Miles keep the same value. And Miles never expire. 1

How many Discover credit card Miles does it take to redeem for a flight or other travel purchase?

With the Discover it ® Miles Credit Card, when you're ready to redeem your Miles, 100 Miles = $1 to redeem for cash or travel credit. The great thing about the Miles that you earn with the Discover ® travel card is that they can be used to cover all or part of a travel expense. So the amount of credit card Miles that you'll need to redeem to cover your entire airline ticket will depend on the price of the flight that you booked. This goes for other travel purchases, too, including rideshares or rental car bookings. Remember—you can redeem your Miles for a statement credit for all or part of your travel purchase, to help keep your total costs down.

Which airlines accept the Discover travel rewards credit card?

The Discover it ® Miles credit card is accepted at 99% of places that take credit cards nationwide, according to the Feb 2023 issue of the Nilson report. 3

Can I redeem my credit card Miles for cash & road trips?

With Discover, you can turn Miles into cash in any amount, any time. 1 And you can also redeem Miles as a statement credit for travel purchases, which include road trip favorites like hotels, rideshares, gas stations, car rentals and more. 1

How can I earn credit card Miles for everyday purchases?

With the Discover it ® Miles credit card, you’ll earn unlimited 1.5x Miles on every purchase you make, every day. That includes credit card travel purchases like airfare and hotels as well as daily purchases like groceries, bills or gas.

Can I redeem some credit card Miles and keep adding to the remaining balance?

Yes. There is no minimum requirement to how many Miles you have to redeem at a time. If you don’t use all of your Miles when you redeem, you’ll just keep adding more Miles to your total with every purchase. Your Miles never expire. 1

Why choose Discover it ® Miles as my travel credit card?

You have to decide the best travel card for your needs. Discover it ® Miles gives the perks of a travel card with the flexibility of an everyday rewards card. You'll earn 1.5X Miles on every purchase, so it’s easy to rack up rewards fast to reach travel goals. You can redeem your Miles as a statement credit toward your Discover bill, or for cash in any amount, any time. 1 Card membership includes more benefits, like great service and security benefits with no annual fee .

If you're looking at other travel credit cards, see if the card issuer charges a large annual fee. Perks like lounge access, elite status, a loyalty program, a platinum card or a gold card may not be worth the annual fee. It's hard to know what your credit limit will be before you apply for travel credit cards, but you can check how the reward points work for the card issuer. For example, if there is a bonus point on eligible purchases such as 5x points or 2x points, check what the reward is on everyday purchases. "5x points," "2x points" or "Earn 2x" can sound good unless your typical spending doesn't fit the eligible purchases for that card issuer or their annual fee is too high. Finally see if new card membership comes with security features and service benefits or other helpful perks like the opportunity to do a balance transfer.

How does a Miles rewards credit card help you earn travel rewards?

With Discover it ® Miles, you’ll earn 1.5X Miles for every dollar you spend on a travel purchase or any other purchase, with no limits on how much you can earn, and no annual fee Miles never expire. 1 After you earn Miles, you can redeem for a statement credit toward the cost of travel purchases or to get cash rewards. 1 Other travel credit cards, such as an airline credit card, will offer different rewards points and your card membership may include an annual fee or blackout dates.

Can you use Discover it ® Miles for travel insurance and global entry purchases?

You can use the Discover it ® Miles credit card at 99% of places that take credit cards nationwide, according to the Feb. 2023 issue of the Nilson Report 3 , including travel insurance companies. The U.S. Trusted Traveler Programs accept Discover ® Credit Cards as a form of payment for TSA PreCheck, Global Entry, and others. And, the Discover it ® Miles card is a rewards credit card that gives you points for travel expenses and every other purchase you make with your card. So it can be your travel credit card and your everyday card. And unlike many travel credit cards, Discover ® charges no annual fee , even after account opening.

Discover it Miles Review: Travel Rewards With a Cash-Back Twist

Claire Tsosie Author Avatar

What’s on This Page

The bottom line, pros and cons, detailed review, compare to other cards, benefits and perks, drawbacks and considerations, how to decide if it's right for you.

Frequent travelers or bigger spenders would probably get more value from a card with a higher rewards rate and more perks (and an annual fee), but this is a solid choice for budget-minded occasional travelers.

Discover it® Miles Image

Bonus offer

  • UNLIMITED BONUS: Unlimited Mile-for-Mile match for all new cardmembers—only from Discover. Discover gives you an unlimited match of all the Miles you’ve earned at the end of your first year. Lower acceptance abroad

Some travel credit cards give you the option of redeeming your points or miles for cash back rather than travel, but doing so usually means getting a lower value per point. The Discover it® Miles is a noteworthy exception. Each mile you earn with the card is worth 1 cent, regardless of whether you use it to pay for travel or convert it to cash back.

The Discover it® Miles earns 1.5 miles for every dollar spent — pretty good for a card with a $0 annual fee, but low compared with travel cards that charge an annual fee.

The flexible redemption options and unique sign-up bonus make this a good low-cost alternative for occasional travelers who want an easy-to-use credit card. But frequent fliers may get even more value out of a more robust travel card, especially if they travel overseas often.

There’s no signing up, no minimum spending or maximum rewards. Just a Miles-for-Miles match.

Ongoing rewards: 1.5 miles per dollar spent on all purchases.

Interest rate: 0% intro APR for 15 months on purchases and balance transfers, and then the ongoing APR of 17.24%-28.24% Variable APR .

Foreign transaction fee: None.

Other benefits:

Free access to FICO score.

Access to Discover's free Social Security number monitoring service .

Discover it® Miles

Flexible redemption options

One one level, the Discover it® Miles works like a general travel credit card. You earn 1.5 cents per mile, and you can redeem miles at a value of 1 cent apiece for credit on your statement against travel purchases made within the past 180 days. However, you can also convert your miles to cash at the same rate, in the form of a direct deposit. Redeeming for cash gives you more flexibility, and there’s nothing stopping you from later spending that money on travel. But for some, earmarking miles specifically for a big trip might be more enticing.

No minimum redemption amount

Many credit cards require you to accumulate a certain amount in rewards — often $25 or more — before you can redeem. The Discover it® Miles allows redemptions as small as 1 point. Getting a penny back at a time is obviously not going to revolutionize your travel style. But the lack of a minimum redemption amount means you can reimburse yourself for smaller travel expenses, like cab fare.

A bonus offer with no limit

Discover's offer to new cardholders is as lucrative as you want to make it. The issuer describes it this way: " UNLIMITED BONUS: Unlimited Mile-for-Mile match for all new cardmembers—only from Discover. Discover gives you an unlimited match of all the Miles you’ve earned at the end of your first year. You could turn 35,000 Miles to 70,000 Miles. There’s no signing up, no minimum spending or maximum rewards. Just a Miles-for-Miles match. " This effectively gives you 3 miles per dollar spent on everything in your first 12 months. If you spent $20,000 on the card in the first year, for example, you would earn $300 worth of miles, and the bonus would kick in $300 more. That’s nothing to sneeze at, especially on a card with an annual fee of $0 .

A generous 0% APR period

The Discover it® Miles gives you an introductory APR of 0% intro APR for 15 months on purchases and balance transfers, and then the ongoing APR of 17.24%-28.24% Variable APR . Most travel credit cards don’t have a 0% period. You can use this perk to pay off a big purchase — say, an upcoming trip — interest-free over time.

No foreign transaction fees

Like all Discover cards, the Discover it® Miles doesn’t charge foreign transaction fees. This benefit could save you money the next time you travel abroad, or make an international purchase online. But bring a backup method of payment, too. Discover isn’t as widely accepted abroad as Visa and Mastercard.

Not good for bigger spenders

The Discover it® Miles is a great card for people who don't plan to spend a whole lot. Because there's no annual fee to eat into your rewards, you come out ahead immediately. But bigger spenders would be better off with a card that charges a fee but offers a higher rewards rate.

For example, if you spend more than $19,000 a year, you'll get more value from the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card . That card gives you 2 miles per dollar spent on most purchases, with miles redeemable for travel expenses at a penny apiece. There's a big sign-up bonus but also a $95 annual fee to consider.

Limited international acceptance

For a low-cost travel card that’s widely accepted around the world, check out the Bank of America® Travel Rewards credit card , which operates on the Visa network. Like the Discover it® Miles , it offers 1.5 points per dollar spent, which you can redeem for 1 cent each on travel purchases. Among major issuers, it also has the most inclusive definition of what counts as a travel purchase.

No bonus rewards opportunities

Earning the same rewards rate on every purchase is certainly the simplest way to make your spending count, but it may not be the most lucrative. A card that earns more on specific spending categories can be the answer, although you’ll have to put in a little more effort remembering where to use the card. The Wells Fargo Autograph℠ Card earns 3 points per dollar on a broad range of common spending categories: restaurants, travel, transit, gas stations, popular streaming services and select phone plans. It also has a $0 annual fee.

Also see the NerdWallet best credit cards roundup for options across credit card types.

Among no-fee travel cards, the Discover it® Miles stands out for its versatility, thanks to the ability to redeem for travel and cash back at equal value. It’s not the best option for travelers who spend more time in hotels and planes than at home. But for vacationers looking for a low-maintenance card with flexible rewards, it’s worth consideration.

alt

This card earns bonus rewards in a variety of popular spending categories, including dining and travel. Points are worth 1.25 cents apiece when redeemed for travel booked through Chase, or you can transfer them to more than a dozen hotel and airline programs. There's a fantastic sign-up bonus, too — but also an annual fee.

Methodology.

NerdWallet reviews credit cards with an eye toward both the quantitative and qualitative features of a card. Quantitative features are those that boil down to dollars and cents, such as fees, interest rates, rewards (including earning rates and redemption values) and the cash value of benefits and perks. Qualitative factors are those that affect how easy or difficult it is for a typical cardholder to get good value from the card. They include such things as the ease of application, simplicity of the rewards structure, the likelihood of using certain features, and whether a card is well-suited to everyday use or is best reserved for specific purchases. Our star ratings serve as a general gauge of how each card compares with others in its class, but star ratings are intended to be just one consideration when a consumer is choosing a credit card. A Groundbreaking Scientific Discovery Just Created the Instruction Manual for Light-Speed Travel

In a first for warp drives, this research actually obeys the laws of physics.

If a superluminal—meaning faster than the speed of light—warp drive like Alcubierre’s worked, it would revolutionize humanity’s endeavors across the universe , allowing us, perhaps, to reach Alpha Centauri, our closest star system, in days or weeks even though it’s four light years away.

The clip above from the 2016 film Star Trek Beyond showcases the effect of a starship zipping through space inside a faster-than-light warp bubble. You can see the imagined but hypothetically accurate warping of spacetime.

However, the Alcubierre drive has a glaring problem: the force behind its operation, called “negative energy,” involves exotic particles—hypothetical matter that, as far as we know, doesn’t exist in our universe. Described only in mathematical terms, exotic particles act in unexpected ways, like having negative mass and working in opposition to gravity (in fact, it has “anti-gravity”). For the past 30 years, scientists have been publishing research that chips away at the inherent hurdles to light speed revealed in Alcubierre’s foundational 1994 article published in the peer-reviewed journal Classical and Quantum Gravity .

Now, researchers at the New York City-based think tank Applied Physics believe they’ve found a creative new approach to solving the warp drive’s fundamental roadblock. Along with colleagues from other institutions, the team envisioned a “positive energy” system that doesn’t violate the known laws of physics . It’s a game-changer, say two of the study’s authors: Gianni Martire, CEO of Applied Physics, and Jared Fuchs, Ph.D., a senior scientist there. Their work, also published in Classical and Quantum Gravity in late April, could be the first chapter in the manual for interstellar spaceflight.

Positive energy makes all the difference. Imagine you are an astronaut in space, pushing a tennis ball away from you. Instead of moving away, the ball pushes back, to the point that it would “take your hand off” if you applied enough pushing force, Martire tells Popular Mechanics . That’s a sign of negative energy, and, though the Alcubierre drive design requires it, there’s no way to harness it.

Instead, regular old positive energy is more feasible for constructing the “ warp bubble .” As its name suggests, it’s a spherical structure that surrounds and encloses space for a passenger ship using a shell of regular—but incredibly dense—matter. The bubble propels the spaceship using the powerful gravity of the shell, but without causing the passengers to feel any acceleration. “An elevator ride would be more eventful,” Martire says.

That’s because the density of the shell, as well as the pressure it exerts on the interior, is controlled carefully, Fuchs tells Popular Mechanics . Nothing can travel faster than the speed of light, according to the gravity-bound principles of Albert Einstein’s theory of general relativity . So the bubble is designed such that observers within their local spacetime environment—inside the bubble—experience normal movement in time. Simultaneously, the bubble itself compresses the spacetime in front of the ship and expands it behind the ship, ferrying itself and the contained craft incredibly fast. The walls of the bubble generate the necessary momentum, akin to the momentum of balls rolling, Fuchs explains. “It’s the movement of the matter in the walls that actually creates the effect for passengers on the inside.”

alcubierre drive model

Building on its 2021 paper published in Classical and Quantum Gravity —which details the same researchers’ earlier work on physical warp drives—the team was able to model the complexity of the system using its own computational program, Warp Factory. This toolkit for modeling warp drive spacetimes allows researchers to evaluate Einstein’s field equations and compute the energy conditions required for various warp drive geometries. Anyone can download and use it for free . These experiments led to what Fuchs calls a mini model, the first general model of a positive-energy warp drive. Their past work also demonstrated that the amount of energy a warp bubble requires depends on the shape of the bubble; for example, the flatter the bubble in the direction of travel, the less energy it needs.

☄️ DID YOU KNOW? People have been imagining traveling as fast as light for nearly a century, if not longer. The 1931 novel Islands of Space by John W. Campbell mentions a “warp” method in the context of superluminal space travel.

This latest advancement suggests fresh possibilities for studying warp travel design, Erik Lentz, Ph.D., tells Popular Mechanics . In his current position as a staff physicist at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in Richland, Washington, Lentz contributes to research on dark matter detection and quantum information science research. His independent research in warp drive theory also aims to be grounded in conventional physics while reimagining the shape of warped space. The topic needs to overcome many practical hurdles, he says.

Controlling warp bubbles requires a great deal of coordination because they involve enormous amounts of matter and energy to keep the passengers safe and with a similar passage of time as the destination. “We could just as well engineer spacetime where time passes much differently inside [the passenger compartment] than outside. We could miss our appointment at Proxima Centauri if we aren’t careful,” Lentz says. “That is still a risk if we are traveling less than the speed of light.” Communication between people inside the bubble and outside could also become distorted as it passes through the curvature of warped space, he adds.

While Applied Physics’ current solution requires a warp drive that travels below the speed of light, the model still needs to plug in a mass equivalent to about two Jupiters. Otherwise, it will never achieve the gravitational force and momentum high enough to cause a meaningful warp effect. But no one knows what the source of this mass could be—not yet, at least. Some research suggests that if we could somehow harness dark matter , we could use it for light-speed travel, but Fuchs and Martire are doubtful, since it’s currently a big mystery (and an exotic particle).

Despite the many problems scientists still need to solve to build a working warp drive, the Applied Physics team claims its model should eventually get closer to light speed. And even if a feasible model remains below the speed of light, it’s a vast improvement over today’s technology. For example, traveling at even half the speed of light to Alpha Centauri would take nine years. In stark contrast, our fastest spacecraft, Voyager 1—currently traveling at 38,000 miles per hour—would take 75,000 years to reach our closest neighboring star system.

Of course, as you approach the actual speed of light, things get truly weird, according to the principles of Einstein’s special relativity . The mass of an object moving faster and faster would increase infinitely, eventually requiring an infinite amount of energy to maintain its speed.

“That’s the chief limitation and key challenge we have to overcome—how can we have all this matter in our [bubble], but not at such a scale that we can never even put it together?” Martire says. It’s possible the answer lies in condensed matter physics, he adds. This branch of physics deals particularly with the forces between atoms and electrons in matter. It has already proven fundamental to several of our current technologies, such as transistors, solid-state lasers, and magnetic storage media.

The other big issue is that current models allow a stable warp bubble, but only for a constant velocity. Scientists still need to figure out how to design an initial acceleration. On the other end of the journey, how will the ship slow down and stop? “It’s like trying to grasp the automobile for the first time,” Martire says. “We don’t have an engine just yet, but we see the light at the end of the tunnel.” Warp drive technology is at the stage of 1882 car technology, he says: when automobile travel was possible, but it still looked like a hard, hard problem.

The Applied Physics team believes future innovations in warp travel are inevitable. The general positive energy model is a first step. Besides, you don’t need to zoom at light speed to achieve distances that today are just a dream, Martire says. “Humanity is officially, mathematically, on an interstellar track.”

Why Is Car Insurance So Expensive?

Soaring premiums have become a prominent driver of inflation, and insurers say that more increases could be on the way. How did it get like this?

  • Share full article

A steady stream of cars drive on a two-way highway that has three lanes on each side.

By Emily Flitter

If your car broke down two years ago, it probably became a bigger problem than you bargained for.

A confluence of forces were to blame: The Covid pandemic disrupted supply chains, pushing used car prices to record highs and making spare parts hard to get; out-of-practice drivers emerging from lockdowns caused more severe wrecks; and technological advancements like motion sensors made even the simplest parts, like a fender or a rim, expensive to replace .

Things have since improved for car owners — except when it comes to insurance bills. Car insurers are still raising prices steeply: The price of motor vehicle insurance rose more than 22 percent in the year through April, the fastest pace since the 1970s, according to a report the Bureau of Labor Statistics on Wednesday. According to calculations by the Insurance Information Institute, a trade group, the average 12-month premium for car insurance was $1,280 in 2023, the industry’s most recent figures.

That has made car insurance a prominent factor preventing overall inflation from cooling more quickly, which could force the Federal Reserve to keep interest rates higher for longer even as the prices for many other essential goods and services have slowed.

Geico recently reported a big jump in quarterly profit on higher premiums and lower customer claims. The share prices of other big auto insurers, like Allstate and Progressive, have beaten the rise in the overall market this year.

That has attracted scrutiny from economists . A key reason car insurance costs are rising so fast right now has to do with how the industry is regulated.

How does insurance regulation work?

Insurers are regulated by the states, not the federal government. In all 50 states, insurance companies must follow specific rules about how and when they can raise the price on their policies.

Each state’s laws are broadly similar, and require insurers to ask regulators for permission to raise prices. Insurers have to make a case — with data to back it up — that the increase is necessary and that they will not make too large a profit on the re-priced policies. This application, known in the business as a “rate filing,” involves complicated paperwork that may take weeks or months to resolve.

The data has to include an analysis of loss trends from the past couple of years, as well as projections for replacement costs and profits. If insurers are deemed to profit too heavily, regulators can make them return money to customers.

The threat of returning money is not an idle one. At the height of pandemic lockdowns in 2020, when many cars sat idle, insurers returned almost $13 billion to customers through dividends, refund checks and premium reductions for policy renewals, according to the insurance ratings agency AM Best.

California was one of the most active states: Insurers there returned $3.2 billion to customers in 2020.

Ricardo Lara, the state’s insurance commissioner, “directed the department to do a very close analysis to make sure that drivers weren’t overcharged,” said Michael Soller, a spokesman for the California Department of Insurance. But starting in late 2021, the state became the poster child for a new problem: an epic backlog of insurers’ requests to raise prices.

How a massive paperwork jam explains rising prices.

When the pandemic shut down most economic activity, it messed up insurers’ ability to use the past to predict the future. For months, they were frozen. They did not submit new rate filings to regulators for a spell — until they did, all at once, in the second half of 2021.

The prices of cars and parts were jumping and drivers were back on the roads and crashing left and right after a hiatus behind the wheel.

“You went from this period of incredible profitability to incredible losses in the blink of an eye,” said Tim Zawacki, an analyst who focuses on insurance at S&P Global Market Intelligence. No companies were willing to stick their necks out by offering lower premiums in the hope of winning new business, he said.

“Everyone was together in significantly pushing for rate increases.”

In California, the most populous U.S. state, insurers were getting creamed by expensive claims.

But the state’s regulator did not start approving insurers’ requests to raise rates until near the end of 2022. The backlog grew so large that the average wait time for approvals was longer — by several months — than the six-month policies that insurers wanted to sell.

“When state regulators delay or prevent companies from accurately pricing insurance, insurers may not be able to absorb the costs,” said Neil Alldredge, the president of the National Association of Mutual Insurance Companies, a trade group that represents many home and auto insurers. The squeeze can lead insurers to leave some states or stop some business lines, he added. “Inefficient regulatory environments in states like California, New Jersey and New York, combined with inflation and increased catastrophic losses, have left consumers with fewer choices of insurers and higher costs,” he said.

California is still the slowest state in the continental United States for auto insurance rate filings, taking an average of 219 days to approve a price proposal for a personal auto policy, according to S&P data provided by Mr. Zawacki.

“We fight for consumers by analyzing all of the data, not just what insurance companies spoon-feed us,” Mr. Soller, the California Department of Insurance spokesman, said.

The S&P analysis showed that New Jersey, the 11th-most populous state, had the sixth-longest wait time, while New York, with the fourth-largest population, had the 7th-longest wait times.

“The department performs a comprehensive review of requests to amend rates or rating systems to ensure compliance with New Jersey law,” said Dawn Thomas, a spokeswoman for the New Jersey Department of Banking and Insurance.

Ms. Thomas said the regulator needed to ensure that each proposed premium increase was “reasonable, adequate, and not unfairly discriminatory,” and that sometimes the insurers’ requests needed to be challenged or denied.

A spokeswoman for New York’s regulator declined to comment.

When will the jam clear?

Shortly before the pandemic, the umbrella organization for state insurance regulators, the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, formed a team of data scientists to help regulators deal with their rate filings, which has gotten more complicated in recent years.

The data team became fully operational in 2021 and its mission is now to help speed up the review process: 37 states have signed up to use it.

This month, during a call with analysts to discuss Allstate’s earnings, company representatives said they had recently reopened their California auto insurance business after getting permission to charge higher rates. The company still wanted to raise prices in other states.

In New York and New Jersey, for example, “even with the rate approvals that we got late last year, we still don’t feel like we’re at the appropriate rate level to want to grow in those two states,” said Mario Rizzo, the president of Allstate’s property-casualty business.

How much higher will premiums go?

In 2021, insurers’ personal auto businesses started recording losses. According to David Blades, an analyst for AM Best, the industry lost $4 billion in 2021, $33 billion in 2022 and roughly $17 billion last year.

According to Dale Porfilio, the chief insurance officer at the Insurance Information Institute, the trade group, many companies still need to raise prices to make up for those bad years.

Last year, insurers raised auto premiums by 14 percent, the biggest increase in over 15 years. Mr. Porfilio’s best guess is that premiums this year will rise another 13 percent.

“It’s going to take time for every company to get their rates to where they want to be,” he said.

Memorial Day weekend 2024 travel will be busiest at these times: How to avoid traffic jams

discovery travel vehicle

If you’re traveling for Memorial Day weekend , be prepared to run into some crowds. The next holiday weekend – taking place May 25 to 27 – is slated to see a record-breaking number of travelers, according to AAA.

A projected 43.8 million Americans are expected to pack their bags for trips over 50 miles or more over the holiday weekend – a 4% increase from last year and close to 2005’s previous record of 44 million.

“We haven’t seen Memorial Day weekend travel numbers like these in almost 20 years,” said Paula Twidale, Senior Vice President of AAA Travel, in a press release. “We’re projecting an additional one million travelers this holiday weekend compared to 2019, which not only means we’re exceeding pre-pandemic levels but also signals a very busy summer travel season ahead.”

Both roads and airports will be extremely busy, with a historic number of roadtrippers since AAA began tracking data in 2000. That’s 38.4 million drivers, up 4% from last year.

A predicted 3.51 million airline passengers are expected to hit the skies over the holiday weekend, a 4.8% increase from 2023. This will make for the most crowded Memorial Day weekend at airports since 2005, AAA said.

Traveling for Memorial Day weekend? Get ready for one of Wisconsin's busiest ever, AAA says.

It’s poised to be one of the busiest Memorial Day travel periods in Wisconsin since the turn of the millennium this year.

This year’s holiday season is expected to be the busiest since 2019, which was a record at the time, and since the COVID-19 pandemic hammered the travel industry, according to an analysis by AAA . The forecast goes back to 2000 and found the main driver of this year’s boost is high consumer interest, the company said in a news release.

“Memorial Day will be the start to a very busy summer of travel,” said Debbie Haas, vice president of travel for AAA, in a press release announcing the forecast. “American travelers are forecast to surpass pre-pandemic levels, making this the busiest Memorial Day holiday weekend in nearly two decades.”

AAA’s analysis shows that 816,913 Wisconsin travelers are expected to travel this year’s Memorial Day weekend, up 4% from 786,232 last year. The majority of that is driving travel, with 734,106 expected to travel by car, with 42,617 and 40,190 by other means like buses, cruises or trains.

Wisconsin’s high interest also mirrors the company’s national forecast. The travel company forecasts that 43.8 million people nationally will travel that weekend, up 5% from 2023, when 42 million traveled.

Here’s what to know about what to expect for traveling — from travel time to costs — on Memorial Day weekend:

Holiday travel expectations at Milwaukee’s airport

While this year’s Memorial Day weekend is shaping up to be a strong travel period, it should be less hectic than the last big travel period of spring break at Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport.

At that time, the local airport saw its parking lot reach capacity and officials urged travelers to plan for it.

Harold Mester, the airport's director of public affairs and marketing, said he expected travel to be up somewhere between 5% to 10% for those traveling out of the city during Memorial Day weekend. He said that was likely to occur due to new flights being offered at the airport compared to last year.

He pointed to airlines like Southwest, which added a nonstop route to Kansas City, and American Airlines, which added routes to Washington D.C., as examples.

“It will be busy for sure. It’s not going to be busy to the level of spring-break busy. It will be busy with people flying out on Thursday or Friday before,” he said. “Those are predictions anyway. I think our numbers will exceed what (AAA) has.”

Mester also said the airport expects a bump in arrivals, as some travelers fly into Milwaukee for outdoor-centric travel in Wisconsin to camp, fish or hike.

He encouraged those traveling during this period to arrive two hours early, especially if they plan to bring a checked bag, and make a parking reservation in advance.

What are gas prices in Wisconsin?

AAA broke down the cost of various travel categories, from gas to airfare, in its forecast. It showed that prices should be comparable to last year’s holiday weekend across many categories. For those traveling locally or regionally, gas prices should be a boon.

That’s because Wisconsin gas prices are tracking lower than last year, AAA’s data showed. However, prices outside the Midwest are higher than that, so don’t expect to see local prices elsewhere.

As of today, the average gas price per gallon in Wisconsin was at $3.30, considerably cheaper than the national average of $3.61.

How much is airfare for the Memorial Day weekend nationally?

AAA said in its news release that airplane ticket prices are comparable to last year, up only 2%, at an average of $778 for a round-trip domestic flight.

In Milwaukee, the average fare was actually cheaper than AAA's data, according to U.S. Bureau of Transportation data. The average fare was down 7%, or at $383.65.

What to expect when booking a hotel on Memorial Day weekend?

Hotel bookings are cheaper this year, down 5% from last year, based on AAA booking data.

AAA forecasted the cost per stay at domestic hotels at $500 for “multiple nights” and said travelers should expect to pay $660 for international hotels.

What are car rental prices, demand for Memorial Day weekend?

AAA analyzed data on car rentals, finding that they're considerably cheaper this year, down 17% from last year.

It said the average cost of a car rental “for a few days” is $439.

AAA said cities with the highest car rental demand were Orlando, Denver, Atlanta, Boston and Las Vegas. The busiest rental pickup dates are Thursday, May 23, and Friday, May 24, with the average reservation for five days.

Alternative travel methods make a rebound

During the COVID-19 pandemic, other travel methods, like buses, cruises and trains, cratered. This year is poised to return to 2019 levels, AAA said.

It projects that 1.9 million people will travel by these methods, up 5.6% from last year. The highest bump came in ocean and river cruises, the company said.

Best and worst times to drive on Memorial Day weekend

AAA pulled data from INRIX, a transportation data and sights company, to show how travelers should plan for driving by each day of the weekend.

  • Thursday, May 23: Leave before 11 a.m. and after 7 p.m. for the best travel times, with the worst travel between 12 p.m. and 6 p.m.
  • Friday, May 24: Leave before 11 a.m. and after 8 p.m. for the best travel times, with the worst travel between 12 p.m. and 7 p.m.
  • Saturday, May 25: Leave before 1 p.m. and after 6 p.m. for the best travel times, with the worst travel between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m.
  • Sunday, May 26: Leave before 1 p.m. for the best travel time, with the worst travel between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m.
  • Monday, May 27: Leave after 7 p.m. for the best travel time, with the worst travel between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m.
