Dream Theater

Dream Theater have steadily achieved a startlingly sublime synthesis of soaring and unmistakable melody, progressive instrumentation and aggressive heaviness unrivaled within hard rock music. The legacy established throughout their virtuosic career of astounding aesthetic alchemy has made their very moniker synonymous with the power of talent, ability and momentum when brilliantly forged together.

As the world around them unravels, unfurls and transitions toward an uncertain destiny economically, militarily, spiritually and politically,  Dream Theater  have refashioned a way forward from the molten hot iron of their own internal transition to create the career-defining album  A Dramatic Turn of Events . It's an evocative collection of fully-realized soundscapes that stands alongside landmark  Dream Theater  albums like  Images and Words  and  Scenes from a Memory  with an even greater prestige, ambition and cunning.

Over twenty-five years since their formation,  Dream Theater  continue to cultivate, curate and protect their status as worldwide niche tastemakers on their eleventh studio album, which was produced by the band's own John Petrucci and mixed by hi-fidelity magician Andy Wallace (Nirvana, Prince, System Of A Down).

"I'm ecstatic with the way the album came out," proclaims James LaBrie, whose lead vocals are instantly recognizable as one of the strongest elements of the well-established Dream Theater sound. "It's the album we had to make. I think we've once again touched on what in the earlier years gave us our originality and our identity. We infused definitive styles that were predominant in our music: the progressive end and the metal end, with the melodic element pretty high up on the list of priorities."

It is an album born from transition, crafted with studied persistence and possessed by newfound freedom and free-flowing invigoration.  A Dramatic Turn of Events strikes the perfect balance between  Dream Theater' 's intimate history with all that is heavy, progressive and melodic with each element fully realized. Longtime fans of the band intrigued by the speediness of the notes on display from  Dream Theater   have much to study on the new album, while fans of melodic hooks will find equal pleasure within the songs.

Perhaps most excitingly, as always, the progressive and the heavy compliment one another without the risk of one overshadowing the other.  Dream Theater   knew they wanted the album to be both heavy and melodic (musically and vocally) and with that determination of vision they obtained that goal. It's the natural culmination of a rightfully celebrated career that has endeared them to millions of fans.

Lead guitarist Petrucci and bassist John Myung have a relationship dating all the way back to middle school. Kindred spirits united by their shared devotion to constant study and rehearsal on their respective instruments, they formed the nucleus of what would become  Dream Theater  with a fellow student at the Berklee College of Music named Mike Portnoy. The second  Dream Theater  album, Images and Words , introduced the world to LaBrie while achieving gold status and heavy MTV rotation for "Pull Me Under."

The band took a step toward its modern lineup with the addition of keyboardist Jordan Rudess, who made his recorded debut on their sixth album,  Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory . Thanks to fan-embraced releases like the dark  Train of Thought  (2003) and the much more diverse  Octavarium  (2005),  Dream Theater  has sold well over ten million albums worldwide, including over two million in the United States.

Dream Theater  found themselves at a career crossroads following the departure of longtime drummer, co-producer and unofficial spokesman Portnoy. But the addition of Mike Mangini (the result of a search and audition process documented in a highly-viewed YouTube series) and the remaining members rededication to each other and their band has resulted in a creative resurgence overall. The personalities and individual talents possessed by  Dream Theater    behind the scenes were strengthened by adversity, with each rising to the challenge individually and collectively as  Dream Theater   pushed forward.

"When I came upon the title  A Dramatic Turn of Events , it really spoke to me as so perfect to what the content of the album is in general," Petrucci explains. "Most of the songs deal with some kind of major change, whether in one person’s life or the lives of many on a grand scale. Whether it be uprising that’s happening now in the Middle East or some even in history or some incredible spiritual or personal journey that somebody went on that they had to go through to get somewhere else and become a better person.

"That theme of metamorphosis was really constant throughout the lyrics," he continues, noting the obvious change within  Dream Theater  as well. "Not on purpose, maybe subconsciously, because of what was happening to us, that album title just fit so perfectly. 'White elephant' or not, it was perfect."

The positive recharge within the re-calibrated group played into the dismissal of an angrier side they had previously experimented with. " Dream Theater  has always had a basis of metal mixed with prog, that's who the players are at the core, [but] over recent years we were going into the arena of being growly," Rudess points out. "We withdrew from that a little bit. We thought about who we are - the remaining forces in the band - our personalities and where we were coming from. The music remains heavy, of course."

"There's as much metal as there's been in the past," he continues. "We also focused in. When we got progressive and instrumental, we took it an extra step. We've gotten a little crazier than we've done before. There are some tunes like 'Outcry' which is such an example of us going full tilt and turning on the progressive maximum. We had fun. The instrumental madness really comes through on that."

Which isn't to say the new  Dream Theater  is all about the blur of fast-paced notes they are often (rightly) credited with popularizing within the genre, because they also love great melodies. "I always tell young musicians that having a good technique is not about playing fast, it's about playing slow," Rudess clarifies. "If you say someone has really great technique it's because anything they have in their musical mind can come through the mechanism that they're using. JP can express a beautiful melody lyric melody line as well as anyone else. That to me is a really good technique - It’s not always about 64th notes."

A Dramatic Turn of Events  is the perfect representation of  Dream Theater  for 2011 and beyond. There's the progressive elements, deeply serious lyrical topics ("I often joke with JP about how he can't just write straight love songs," notes Rudess), strong ballads, some wacky fun and no shortage of heaviness.

"This is a top three  Dream Theater  album for me," LaBrie states. "There’s just something about this album that I think really touches on some of the elements on our music that really made this band shine as far back as 1992 when we released  Images and Words . I think that put us on a level that was hard to ignore. I think this album solidifies that. We’re still the band we’ve always been. We’re keeping it contemporary and taking it to a whole new level. With all the body of work, this album proves we’re continuing to better ourselves and continuing to write the material we think is the best material we’ve ever written."

Petrucci concurs. "The mood the songs have, the infectious nature and depth of the music, the depth of the subject matter, I think it’s going to be something of a shining light amongst a few others in our catalog for years to come. You always hope people enjoy it, you can’t predict, but I have a strong feeling that this is going to be something that our fans, and even new fans relate to on a different level."

7 Big Memorable Moments From the Dream Theater India Show

Thunderbolts on cue, James LaBrie’s Indian accent impression, John Myung’s tribute to Jaco Pastorius and more

' src=

Despite the relentless rain that depleted the concert venue, the American prog metallers were in top form in Mumbai. Photo: Prashin Jagger

When Mumbai-based events agency Opium Events announced that they will be bringing down American prog rockers Dream Theater for their India debut this past August, fans from around the country could not contain their excitement to the days leading up to the big show. But as luck would have it, the day of the band’s first show here invited a roar of applause from weather gods who were probably having a rather noisy prog party of their own in the skies. Despite rains lashing the city and the frequent (and often scary) thunderbolts, Dream Theater powered through the gig””with a couple of breaks here and there. The venue might have turned into a marshland by the end of the show but for fans of the band, the experience of watching the pioneers of prog playing songs from their 1992 magnum opus Images and Words was worth it all. Here are some of the most memorable moments from the show:

1. Lightning struck just as the band opened the show with the scorching “The Dark Eternal Night” off their ninth album Systematic Chaos. Although it made for a beautiful sight, the band had to cut the song short and go off stage till the thunderbolts subsided.

2. The rain gods weren’t particularly kind to the 4000-odd people who turned up for the gig. Even though it poured for the entirety of the concert, fans were glued to their spots, cheering for the world’s biggest prog band.

3. The show witnessed musicianship at its highest quality. From John Petrucci’s scintillating guitar solos, Jordan Rudess’ slick keyboard work and James LaBrie’s impressive vocal range, India was treated to an epic level of virtuosity.

4. John Myung paid a rousing tribute to the late great Jaco Pastorius with a bass solo that sent goosebumps among the fans.

5. We could count the number of female fans at the concert on our fingers. The concert also proved the hypothesis that Dream Theater’s fan following in the country is largely black T-shirt wearing (bearded) men.

6. When the band performed their lead single “Pull Me Under” off their 1992 album Images and Words, the crowd chipped in and showcased their vocal chops, giving LaBrie a run for his money.

7. Sometime during the middle of the set, LaBrie decided to turn standup and show off his Indian accent impression. The moment might have caused a bunch of us to roll our eyes at the shtick (another Apu-like impression from The Simpsons , really?) but LaBrie quickly disclaimed that it was done for pure fun with no bad intention at all. Oh, and he also admitted Indian food is the band’s all-time favorite cuisine.

Student Film Focuses On Teen Suicide

Film major and vandal swimmer maddie timm’s film premiered at the kino film festival.

Her friend committed suicide in high school.

The tragedy was a painful low point that followed Maddie Timm like her own reflection in a pane of glass.

Before she took her life, the friend had meant – many times – to attend a high school swim meet in which Timm competed. It was just one thing left undone.

When Timm enrolled at U of I, she joined the Vandal swim team and knew what her major would be. She would study film  in the Journalism and Mass Media  department and address suicide in one of her movies.

Timm’s film, “One Less Lonely Ghost,” which she completed as part of her capstone project, tells the story of the relationship between two friends, one living and the other a ghost who lost their battle with mental illness. It premiered at the Kino International Short Film Festival at Moscow’s Kenworthy Theater in April 2024.

“I wanted to show that the people who go through these struggles, they can choose to stay,” Timm said. “I wanted to make a film to promote awareness and to help others recognize the signs and be present for people who may be facing decisions that can lead to suicide.”

Timm’s friend — the film character’s name is Lively — took her life in 2019. Her death was followed by the suicide of another teen acquaintance.

“It really shook our small community,” said Timm, who grew up in Mesa, Arizona. “We had not gone through anything like that before.”

The suicides in her town came on the heels of a TV made-for- television series depicting a range of social issues affecting teenagers. It told the story of a young woman who commits suicide and leaves behind a box of cassette tapes on which she has recorded the reasons she chose to kill herself.

Every day I am around these creative people and in this great small community and wonderful learning environment. It really is more than I ever expected. — Maddie Timm. Senior. Film.

Timm’s film takes a different tack.

“The message of the Netflix series was so wrong,” Timm said. “People ended up losing their life from it. I wanted to turn the tables. My story ends on a happier note.”

Timm who grew up with competitive parents — her dad played basketball in college and was a reliable participant in Spokane’s annual Hoopfest, and her mom was a college track and field athlete — started swimming at 5 years old.

“I spent every day in the pool before and after school,” Timm said.

She became a high school standout and knew she would swim at the collegiate level.

Her other dream was to be a screenwriter and film maker.

“I was just passionate about it. I knew it was something I wanted to do,” she said.

After the suicides in her hometown, and to address the Netflix series, she also knew what her first film would be about.

“I took from those two stories,” she said. “I realized that film was how I could reach people, so the ultimate goal became to help people, to get people to form relationships and know that they are not going through these trials alone.”

The film, which includes a U of I actor and Lionel Hampton School of Music score, was filmed around the Palouse and is being pitched to other film festivals across the country.

“We had so much great input and so much help putting this together,” she said. “I think it’s impactful. I hope it helps people. That’s the ultimate goal.”

When she pitched the story as a capstone, JAMM peers and mentors jumped on board.

“She had an impactful story to tell about suicide and mental health,” Professor Russell Meuff, director of the film and television program, said. “She was passionate and presented a clear artistic vision for her project. And she was confident in her ability to execute her plan. We love when our students can tell stories that are engaging but that also help foster conversations about important issues in our world.”

Timm’s decision to accept a swim scholarship after applying at U of I was an easy one, she said.

“I searched for universities with swim teams and film departments,” she said. “There weren’t many.”

Spokane, where her mother’s parents lived and where her dad played in Hoopfest, wasn’t far from Moscow. She had visited there a lot and its nearness gave her a sense of familiarity. When she was offered a place on the Vandal swim team, she accepted.

While at U of I, Timm got the opportunity to work on the production team for U of I athletics in addition to honing her own filmmaking, photography and screenwriting skills at JAMM . The journalism and mass media faculty helped her secure a grant as well as equipment to shoot her capstone project.

“I am so thankful I came to U of I,” Timm said. “Every day I am around these creative people and in this great small community and wonderful learning environment. It really is more than I ever expected.”

Timm is in close contact with the family of the friend who took her life, she said. She has kept them — including her friend’s three younger siblings — up to date on the film’s production and speaks regularly with her friend’s mother.

After the death, the friend’s mom apologized to Timm for not attending a swim meet with her daughter.

“I am so sorry for you,” the mother told Timm. “My daughter and I always wanted to attend a swim meet, but now she will not have the chance to watch you.”

The apology was heart rending, Timm said.

“It broke me,” Timm said. “I think learning from people who lost loved ones is really impactful. It really impressed upon me that I needed to do something for these families who have suffered like this.”

Anticipation hung in the air inside Paris’ La Défense Arena on Thursday night as a clock counted down to Taylor Swift ‘s first European date of the Eras Tour .

Yes, the record-breaking tour had been running for over a year and was very well-documented — Swift even released a concert film of it in October that is now streaming on Disney+ — but tonight was different. Just under a month ago, during a break from the tour, Swift had released her 11th studio album, “ The Tortured Poets Department ,” and this show would mark its live debut.

Popular on Variety

Heading into the “Speak Now” era, Swift debuted a new intro with purple flower visuals, cut “Long Live” and went back to just doing “Enchanted” as the sole song of that album’s set. The “Reputation” era remained unchanged, with Swift even sticking to the same outfit as before — an asymmetrical black-and-red snake bodysuit.

As unfamiliar visuals came across the screen, it became clear that it was now time for “The Tortured Poets Department.” Assorted pieces of furniture — a chair, a lamp, a door — floated from the sky alongside pieces of paper, which then evolved into a desert road where the fixtures crashed onto the floor. Swift then appeared in a white corset dress with cursive writing adorning its skirt and a chunky Vivienne Westwood choker. First up was “But Daddy I Love Him,” followed by a snippet of “So High School” that segued into “Who’s Afraid of Little Old Me?” The set’s graphics were mainly in black-and-white, and included a UFO that looked like it was about to abduct Swift and a filter that whited-out her eyes, giving her a demonic look. One chorus of “Down Bad,” during which Swift rotated around the stage on a spinning metal block, led into “Fortnight,” where a “TTPD”-emblazoned bed was brought out and Swift’s dancers dressed in nurse costumes. As Swift sat across from a dancer on a typewriter, the bed was tilted every which way, creating a fascinating display. She then donned a marching band jacket for “The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived” as her dancers followed her with drums.

All of the stylings for “The Tortured Poets Department” were vaguely Old Hollywood — perhaps a reference to Clara Bow? — but Swift really hammered that home with a minute-long skit in the middle of the set, in which two of her dancers fling her around like a doll while old-timey music plays. During the skit, Swift’s dress is removed — revealing nothing but a two-piece black set — and she is dressed in a gold jacket and matching heels. “I Can Do It With a Broken Heart” followed, furthering the Old Hollywood theme with feather props and a marquee displaying “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour.” As Swift and her dancers left the stage, a visual reading “The End” displayed across the screen.

The surprise songs were next, at an unusually late place in the set. Wearing a new pink dress, Swift sang “Paris” — naturally — on the guitar, and then turned to the piano for “Tortured Poets Department” tune “loml,” which marked a tender moment of the set. Swift ended the show, as always, with the “Midnights” era, the songs for which remained the same, though she wore a new blue bodysuit.

Leaving the venue that night, one couldn’t help but feel that they had just witnessed an entirely new show, proving Swift’s expertise in reinvention. She could have just tacked “The Tortured Poets Department” songs onto the beginning or the end, but that would have been too easy. Instead, with more changes sure to come throughout its European leg, she gifted her fans with another reason to come back and see the Eras Tour again and again.
