Elevation Graph for Amish Country Scenic Drive

Lancaster County is known as Amish or Pennsylvania Dutch Country. A drive along its scenic back-country roads will acquaint you with a way of life that hasn’t changed in hundreds of years. Learn about Amish culture and history, touring through charismatic towns brimming with old-fashioned charm. This adventure is just a short drive from Baltimore and Philadelphia and makes a perfect day trip or weekend getaway.

Neff’s Covered Bridge

We begin our tour in the city of Lancaster, the heart of Amish Country and home to the largest and oldest Amish community in the United States. The Amish and Mennonites are religious communities that shun worldliness and most do not look kindly on having their photograph taken. Please respect their beliefs and refrain from taking photos.

History abounds in Lancaster, established in 1730 as a wilderness trading post. Construction of the railroad in the 1800s led to Lancaster becoming an industrial center with tobacco production at its core. It eventually was lauded as the second largest tobacco seed leaf market in the country. Tobacco farms can still be seen in the countryside.

Lancaster was Pennsylvania’s capital from 1799 to 1812 and almost became the nation’s capitol. Hundreds of historical landmarks remain and it boasts the largest National Historic Register District in the United States. Discover eleven different architectural styles spanning from 1710 to 1945 by strolling downtown on your own or on a guided tour with a costumed interpreter.

At the Downtown Lancaster Visitors Center (I1) , find local and regional information, maps, exhibits, and tour info. The Mennonite Information Center (I2) features exhibits, information, books, gifts, recordings, Amish and Mennonite cookbooks and more.

Lancaster is a vibrant city, featuring museums, theaters, cafes, shops and art galleries. Peruse the work of local artists on Prince Street better known as Gallery Row. On the first Friday evening of each month, over 90 galleries are open, and you can meet artists and enjoy special receptions. On North Queen Street, explore antique shops, glass studios and collectible shops. Be sure to note the lively, outdoor murals painted on many of the downtown buildings.

Don’t miss the hustle and bustle of Lancaster Central Market (A3) , the oldest continuously-operating farmers market in the country. Delight in the assortment of fresh produce, cheeses, meats, baked goods, tea and handmade crafts.

The Fulton Theatre (A1) has been a cultural focal point since 1852 and is the oldest continuously-operating theater in the country. Experience this historical landmark with a contemporary theatre performance or register for a backstage tour.

Our drive begins leaving Lancaster on PA-462 east to PA-340, the Old Philadelphia Pike. Passing miles of verdant farmland, you will notice Amish farms, barns and homes, recognizable for the lack of electric wires leading to them.

You then arrive in the gracious village of Bird In Hand which dates back to the 1700s and was a meeting place for farmers and a convenient rest stop for travelers. Today, you’ll discover homegrown hospitality — quaint shops with hand-crafted items, a farmers market, bakeries and restaurants offering Pennsylvania Dutch delicacies such as hand-rolled Pennsylvania Dutch pretzels. Bird In Hand is also part of the Country Murals Trail.

There are a number of Amish buggy ride businesses along the route. Consider getting off-the beaten-track touring the Amish countryside, homes, one-room schoolhouses and covered bridges to the clip-clop of horses’ hooves. At Plain and Fancy Farm and the Amish Experience Theater (A4) , observe life on an Amish farm with a guided tour and buggy ride. The theater uses multiple projection screens, a three dimensional set, and special effects to explore 400 years of Amish culture and tradition. Then indulge in a traditional all-you-can-eat Pennsylvania Dutch dining experience. There is a fee for the film and dining. Coupons are available on their website.

At the junction of PA-340 and PA-772 is the town of Intercourse. Founded in 1754, this has long been a destination for farmers to replenish supplies and socialize. There are unique shops to explore and sample Pennsylvania Dutch food. Celebrate every season with special events such as the Rhubarb Festival, the Seven Sweets and Sours Festival, and the Berry Jam Festival.

Take the 15-minute free tour of the Intercourse Pretzel Factory (A6) . Learn about the craft of pretzel-making and try your hand at twisting your own pretzel. Check the website tour hours.

Arrive hungry, as your taste buds will be tantalized at Kitchen Kettle Village (A8) , a conglomeration of over 40 shops focused around the Jam and Relish Kitchen. Fresh fudge, kettle corn, locally-smoked meats, cheeses, ice cream entice, while you shop for quilts, boots, Colonial accents, lighting, kitchen gadgets and more.

Continue on PA-340 to the tranquility of rolling farmlands as you travel through White Horse, Compass Gap and Wagontown. After Wagontown, turn left to continue on PA-82 north to Loag’s Corner and Elverson. On the way is Loag’s Corner Turkey Farm, where you can purchase a natural Thanksgiving bird.

Here, you may want take a side trip to Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site (A9) which showcases the beginning of industrialization in America. Learn how iron was melted and cast, cannons molded and about the lives of the workers and their families through costumed-interpreters, living history programs and exhibits. Hopewell Furnace consists of 14 restored structures including an original water wheel, the blacksmith shop, the “big house”, as well as 848 wooded acres perfect for a hike, wildlife watching and a picnic. The site is free, donations are appreciated. In autumn, enjoy picking historic apple varieties (a fee is charged).

If you took the side trip, the 7,730-acre French Creek State Park (H2) is nearby and offers a wide variety of recreation opportunities. The Park has been designated by the National Audubon Society an Important Bird Area and Important Mammal Area. Thirty-five miles of trails offer a variety of hiking for every level, exploring forest and wetland and lakes. Enjoy fishing for northern pike, chain pickerel, bass, walleye, or boating on Hopewell Lake and Scotts Run Lake. Park naturalists lead guided hikes, bike trips and paddling programs where you can get close to herons, turtles and beaver. Make it an overnight with year-round modern cabin and cottage rentals and tent camping. In winter, the park is a draw for cross-country skiing, sledding, ice fishing and skating.

Our drive continues from Elverson. Take PA-23 west, the New Holland Pike, passing the little town of Blue Ball to New Holland. Visit the New Holland Area Historical Society Museum (M2) which features 1000’s of photographs, artifacts, memorabilia and farm equipment. Admission is by donation.

From New Holland, take N Railroad Avenue to join US-322, Division Highway, to Ephrata.

Founded in 1732, Ephrata was an agricultural community and pleasure resort renowned for its spring waters. Tour the historic downtown and enjoy unique shops, art galleries and restaurants.

At the Ephrata Cloister (A7) , discover what life was like for this religious community who sought spiritual goals rather than earthly rewards. Guided tours examine the Cloister which was founded in 1732 by German settlers and is now a National Historic Landmark. The Cloister features a collection of over 20 sites, including Conrad Beissel’s House, Weaver’s House, Shady Nook Farm, Bake House, the Cocalico Creek and Spring. The members were accomplished in music and art, evident in the collection of printed books and manuscripts, artifacts and furniture. There is a fee to enter.

Open every Friday, the Green Dragon Farmers Market and Auction (A10) is one of the largest markets in the area. The carnival atmosphere is bustling with a dizzying mix of Amish items, quilts, collectibles, handmade goods, clothing, fresh food, restaurants, books, flowers, jewelry, toys, yard sale items and fine antiques. Or try to score a great deal at one of the auctions for household goods, small animals, or hay and straw.

From Ephrata, take PA-272, South Reading Road.

Nothing beats the romance and nostalgia of a covered bridge. Turn right on Meadow Valley Road to see Schenck’s Mill Covered Bridge (B2) . The single span burr arch bridge is 102-feet long and was built in 1885. There are great vantage points for photography.

Continue on Millway Road to PA-772 and the town of Lititz. Here, you can visit the Julius Sturgis Pretzel Bakery (A2) . Established in 1861, this was the first commercial pretzel bakery in the country. It is still operated by the Sturgis family and during the 20-minute tour, get a hands-on lesson in pretzel making, learn about the different varieties, such as traditional hard and thin pretzels, and soft pretzels. There is a small fee for the tour which includes a sample bag of pretzels.

If you love wolves, you won’t want to miss the Wolf Sanctuary of Pennsylvania (A11) . This non-profit organization provides a safe habitat for over 40 wolves. Learn about wolves and their behavior with a guided walking tour by day or register for a Full Moon Tour for and enjoy a bonfire as well. There is a fee to enter which supports the sanctuary.

The wonderful smell of chocolate permeates the air at the Wilbur Chocolate’s Candy Americana Museum (M1) . Like a kid in a candy store, indulge in hand-made chocolate treats, observe chocolate and fudge-making and explore the history of chocolate through early machinery, tools, memorabilia and video at the Candy Americana Museum. The museum is free.

Lititz Spring Park (H1) is a pleasant place to relax. Enjoy a picnic lunch by the fountain, kids playground, and take part in special events by the band shell. Relive the “Golden Era” of the Reading and Columbia Railroad at the replica of the 1884 Lititz Passenger Depot and Express Station that is also the town Welcome Center located on the northwest corner of the park.

Back on the road, depart Lititz on PA-772 and head towards Manheim. The “Main Street” Community features a town square, boutique wineries and is home of the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire held at Mount Hope Estate and Winery August-October.

Lancaster County boasts over 25 covered bridges. To see the Kaufman’s Distillery Covered Bridge (B1) along the way, turn left from PA-772 onto W Sun Hill Road. Spanning Big Chickies Creek, the covered burr arch-truss bridge was built in 1900. Nearby is Schenck’s Mill Covered Bridge (B2) . The single span, double burr arch truss bridge was built in 1855 and is still open to traffic.

Continue on PA-772 through Mount Joy to Marietta where you turn left on PA-441 traveling along the banks of the Susquehanna River. Our official drive heads back to Lancaster, though you may want to consider another side trip. Just 30 minutes from Mount Joy on PA-743 North is Hersheypark (A12) offering thrills and excitement with 11 roller coasters, over 65 rides and attractions including a water park, arcades, food and entertainment.

Our drive continues left onto PA-441 to PA-23 towards Lancaster, weaving through expansive views of country-side and farms.

Turn left on US-30 to arrive back in Lancaster. Just outside Lancaster is Neff’s Mill Covered Bridge (B3) built in 1875. Spanning Pequea Creek, the single span, wooden, double burr arch truss bridge is only 11-feet wide and the narrowest in the county.

If you’re up for one more adventure from Lancaster, take a short drive to Strasburg on PA-741, where you can step back in time at the Strasburg Railroad (A5) . Pulled by turn-of-the century steam locomotives, climb aboard the President’s car, first-class lounge car, freight cars, dining car, or one of the many wooden passenger cars and embark on a 45-minute adventure along a historic short-line route. Then visit the shop where engines are restored or try operating one of the vintage pump cars.

Beautiful Drive to Historic Covered Bridges in Lancaster County, PA

January 11, 2022

When visiting Lancaster County, PA, a driving tour to see some of the historic covered bridges is a perfect leisurely activity to add to your itinerary. Not only is it great for social-distancing, but it will guide you off-the-beaten path through the beautiful countryside. In this post, I'll show you how to find awesome covered bridge trails in Lancaster County and our experience on them.

This post contains affiliate links which means I receive a small commission if you purchase something using the links. This won’t cost you anything extra but helps keep this blog going. Thank you for your support!

A Little about Lancaster, PA

Lancaster, also known as the Red Rose City, is located in south-central Pennsylvania and is one of the oldest inland towns in the United States.

Lancaster City is the seat of Pennsylvania's Lancaster County which is located along the Susquehanna River and is roughly 70 miles west of Philadelphia. Lancaster County has a diverse population with agricultural roots and a large Amish community. Because of this large Amish community, Lancaster is often referred to as "Pennsylvania Dutch Country".

Fun Fact:  Did you know that Lancaster was once the capital of the United States? It's true... for all of one day!

On September 27, 1777, after the Continental Congress fled Philadelphia, which had been captured by the British (during the American Revolution), Lancaster became the capital for one day. The next day, the revolutionary government moved further west to York, PA, which served as the U.S. capital until June 27, 1778.

Covered Bridges in Lancaster, PA

Whether passing through Lancaster on a Pennsylvania road trip or staying in the county, getting off the highway to find covered bridges is a great activity.

These bridges are sometimes referred to as "kissing bridges" because of the couples who have strolled across them over the years - even before Instagram existed!

What is a Covered Bridge?

It is a timber truss bridge that has a roof, a deck, and siding. Most covered bridges are almost completely enclosed. This enclosure is intended to extend the bridge's lifespan as it protects it from the elements, such as heavy snowfall.

Covered bridges in Lancaster County tend to be single-lane bridges. When approaching the bridge, check to see if any cars are coming the other way before entering it.

Lancaster County Covered Bridge Driving Trails

Since covered bridges are located on back roads around the Lancaster countryside, it's helpful to have a map to help you find them. During our stay in Lancaster, PA, we followed a couple of the Covered Bridges Driving Tours on the Discover Lancaster website .

These driving tours guide you on a meandering journey through the picturesque countryside. As you drive, you'll not only find covered bridges, but also several Amish farms, schools, and fields. Along the way, you'll drive through small, historic Pennsylvania towns.

When is the Best Time to See Lancaster's Covered Bridges?

What's great about a covered bridge driving tour is that it's something you can do in any season. Whether covered in snow, surrounded by fall foliage, spring blooms, or lush summer greenery - you'll still be able to appreciate the charming beauty of these bridges.

In my opinion, the Lancaster countryside is prettiest in late-summer before the crops are harvested when the scenery is vibrant green. But others might prefer the open, stark views of the winter landscape. It really depends on which season you speaks to you!

Cycling to Lancaster Covered Bridges

If you're an avid cyclist, you might enjoy cycling the covered bridge tours in Lancaster, PA instead. Covered bridges are mostly located on back roads, so most do not have shoulders. Also, beware of horse manure on the roads due to the Amish horse-drawn buggies!

Check out a few tips for riding in Lancaster County, including what to do when passing Amish buggies, on the Lancaster Bike Club website .

Our Experience on the Lancaster County Covered Bridge Tours

In this post, I'll share our experience on the covered bridge driving tours so that you can decide if this is an activity you might enjoy when you visit Lancaster County, PA.

We followed two of the tours - 1) Lititz and its Countryside and 2) Historic Rivertowns and Western Villages .

Between these two tours, I'd recommend the first one. In general, the bridges on the Lititz tour seem better-maintained and are easier to access. You're also much more likely to encounter Amish buggies and farms on the Lititz tour.

1) Lititz and Its Countryside Covered Bridge Tour

If you only have time in Lancaster County to do one covered bridge driving tour, I'd recommend the Lititz and Its Countryside Tour . It's a picturesque drive and takes you past many beautiful bridges. Plus, you'll end the tour in Lititz - a charming historic town with many cute shops and restaurants.

Starting the Lititz Covered Bridge Tour

The first Lancaster County covered bridge driving tour begins in typical suburban glory - a COSTCO parking lot. Don't worry, the scenery gets better from here.

You'll start by winding your way around the back roads of the Eden neighborhood, behind the Lancaster Country Club. As you drive, you'll see some beautiful properties on these tree-lined streets.

Hunsecker's Mill Covered Bridge

The first stop on the Lititz covered bridge tour is Hunsecker's Mill Covered Bridge which spans the Conestoga River. At 180 ft (55 m) long, it's the longest single span covered bridge in the county.

Hunsecker Mill Covered Bridge

Originally built in the 1840s, the bridge has been swept away by floods many times and was last rebuilt in 1973 after Hurricane Agnes (June 1972) washed it away.

Unlike most historic covered bridges in the county, Hunsecker's Mill Covered Bridge is not on the National Register of Historic Places.

Pinetown Covered Bridge

Next on the tour is Pinetown Covered Bridge, which was originally built in 1867, but has been rebuilt several times by local Amish after flooding damaged it. It also spans the Conestoga River.

Pinetown Covered Bridge

Official name: Big Conestoga #6 Bridge Other names: Nolte's Point Mill Bridge, Bushong's Mill Bridge

After passing Pinetown Covered Bridge, you'll spend a brief period of time on Oregon Pike, a busier road, to make your way to the next covered bridge.

Zook's Mill Covered Bridge

After turning off of Oregon Pike, you'll quickly reach Zook's Mill Covered Bridge - one of the only bridges not damaged by Hurricane Agnes in 1972.

Built in 1849, it is painted red both inside and outside, which is the traditional color of Lancaster covered bridges.

Zook's Mill Covered Bridge

Official name: Cocalico #7 Bridge Other names: Wenger Covered Bridge, Rose Hill Covered Bridge

Keller's Mill Covered Bridge

The next bridge - Keller's Mill Covered Bridge - is the only all white covered bridge in Lancaster County.

Although originally built in 1873, it's been rebuilt several times after flooding. It was even disassembled and moved to a new location on the creek in the 2000s.

Keller's Mill Covered Bridge

Official name: Cocalico No. 5 Bridge Other names: Guy Bard Covered Bridge, Rettew's Covered Bridge

Erb's Mill Covered Bridge

Last on the Lititz tour is Erb's Mill Covered Bridge which spans Hammer Creek. Originally built in 1849, then rebuilt in 1887, it is the traditional red color but the approaches (front and back sides) are painted white.

Erb's Mill Covered Bridge vert

Official name: Hammer Creek #1 Bridge

Ending in Lititz, PA

Once you're finished admiring the beauty of the covered bridges and the countryside, you'll finish your tour in the town of Lititz, PA.

Shops in Lititz, PA

Founded in 1756, Lititz has a charming old town feeling to it. Stroll along Main Street to admire the historic houses and pop into some of the local shops. If you're hungry, grab a bite to eat or a beer at the Appalachian Brewing Company .

Linden Hall in Lititz, PA

Chocolate lovers should be sure to visit the Wilbur Chocolate Store (45 N Broad Street) to pick up some goodies. As you can see, we stocked up on our favorite Wilbur buds - can't get those in Hong Kong!

Wilbur Chocolate in Lititz, PA

2) Historic Rivertowns and Western Villages Covered Bridge Tour

If you're interested in continuing the hunt for covered bridges, you might also enjoy the Historic Rivertowns and Western Villages Covered Bridge Tour. In general, the western side of Lancaster County is less visited by tourists, since it has few actual tourist attractions.

Perhaps as a result of fewer tourists, we found it harder to stop at these bridges since there wasn't much space to pull the car off of the road. However, you won't find as much traffic on these roads so you can usually pop out quickly to snap a photo.

The reason we decided to take this tour is because I grew up in western Lancaster County. So, we decided to combine the covered bridge tour with re-visiting places from my childhood. In fact, if you decide to follow this tour, you'll pass by my old elementary school - though it's a totally new building from when I attended it.

Beginning Western Lancaster County Covered Bridge Tour in Columbia, PA

To start the Western Lancaster Covered Bridge Tour, head to the riverside town of Columbia, Pennsylvania . This small town, originally known as Wright's Ferry, is located on the east bank of the Susquehanna River, just south of U.S. Route-30.

Historic building in Columbia, PA

Stop by Coffee and Cream , which is located in the old train station building, to grab a refreshing beverage or ice cream. Be sure to check out the parking lot beside it for an impressive mural highlighting the Columbia River Trail.

Then, cross the railroad tracks and head down to the Susquehanna River for impressive water views.

Susquehanna River in Columbia, PA

After admiring the river, I recommend a quick stroll through town to see some of the historic buildings. Once you're finished exploring the town, head back to the car and follow the map to begin the covered bridge tour.

Driving from Columbia to Forry's Mill Covered Bridge

As you make your way out of the historic center of Columbia, you'll find yourself in strip mall heaven before turning onto Prospect Road. The climb up Prospect Road, especially if you've decided to cycle, is a steep one.

Once you reach the top of the hill, in the small village of Ironville, you'll have beautiful views out over the countryside below.

Forry's Mill Covered Bridge

The first bridge you'll reach on the Western Covered Bridge Tour is Forry's Mill Covered Bridge, which spans Chiques Creek. Originally built in 1969 and repaired in 1925, it's painted the traditional red with the approaches both painted white.

Forry's Mill Covered Bridge

Official name: Big Chiques #7 Bridge

Siegrist's Mill Covered Bridge

Less than a mile from Forry's Mill, Siegrist's Mill Covered Bridge is an 88-ft long bridge that also spans Chiques Creek.

Originally built in 1885, it survived Hurricane Agnes, but was swept downstream by Tropical Storm Lee in 2011. As a result, it had to be repaired and re-opened in 2013.

Siegrist's Mill Covered Bridge

Official name: Big Chiques #6 Bridge

Stop in Mount Joy, PA

Although not directly on the western Lancaster covered bridge tour, you could veer off the path into the small town of Mount Joy, PA. The town has a few cute shops, as well as a historic 19th-century local brewery ( Bube's Brewery ), which looks quite appealing.

Unfortunately, we didn't have time to stop in Mount Joy on our tour.

Shenk's Mill Covered Bridge

Next up on the tour is Shenk's Mill Covered Bridge. Although this is how it's written on the sign at the bridge, it seems to have many different spellings - Schenk's Mill, Schenck's Mill, Shenck's Mill.

Nestled in the trees, I had a hard time getting a photo of this one. Like most others on this tour, it's painted red with white approaches. It was originally built in 1847, then rebuilt in 1855.

Shenk's Mill Covered Bridge

Official name: Big Chiques #4 Bridge

Kauffman's Distillery Covered Bridge

Named after a whiskey distillery operated by the Kauffman family in the 1800s, the Kauffman's Distillery Covered Bridge was originally built in 1857 and later rebuilt in 1874.

Kauffman's Distillery Covered Bridge

Official name: Big Chiques #1 Bridge Other name: Sporting Hill Bridge

Shearer's Mill Covered Bridge

Unfortunately, the last covered bridge on the western Lancaster tour - Shearer's Mill Covered Bridge - is a bit of a disappointment. It's currently (as of visiting in September 2021) under construction so you cannot go inside the bridge.

It was originally built in 1847 and rebuilt in 1855. In 1971, the bridge was moved to Manheim Memorial Park, which is where it stands today. Unlike all the other bridges on the western tour, it is painted entirely red, including both approaches.

Shearer's Mill Covered Bridge

End Covered Bridge Tour in Manheim, PA

Although you'll drive through the town of Manheim to get to the last bridge on the tour, this is also where the Western Lancaster County Covered Bridge Tour ends.

If you have time, you may want to park the car and get out to stroll around the town to admire some of the historic buildings or stop in a café to grab a coffee.

Historic Manheim National Bank in Manheim, PA

Panning a Trip to Lancaster, PA

Getting to lancaster.

As with many smaller cities in the U.S., the easiest way to get to Lancaster is by car. It's the perfect stop on a Pennsylvania or larger East Coast road trip.

If you're keen to take public transportation, you can get to Lancaster by train on Amtrak's Keystone service. Once you've arrived in Lancaster, however, I highly recommend renting a car to get around the county.

Places to Stay in Lancaster County

In Lancaster County, you'll find a wide variety of accommodations ranging from budget-friendly hotel chains to trendy, boutique hotels.

If you like to be within walking distance of restaurants, galleries, and markets, I highly recommend staying in downtown Lancaster. But if you enjoy a country getaway, you can also find a variety of hotels and vacation rentals around the county.

Lancaster Hotel Recommendations

Although we usually stay with family when visiting Lancaster, I've compiled a list of hotels that have received excellent reviews in which I would consider staying.

  • Lancaster Marriott at Penn Square : A landmark hotel in the heart of downtown Lancaster.
  • Lancaster Arts Hotel : A boutique hotel with a unique, arts-inspired décor and exposed brick walls in Lancaster City.
  • Cork Factory Hotel : A historic hotel in an old cork factory with spacious rooms and exposed brick walls in Lancaster city.
  • Comfort Suites Amish Country : A non-smoking, clean, budget-friendly hotel with excellent reviews, close to Rockvale Outlets.

Or, Consider a Lancaster Vacation Rental

If you have a large family or a group traveling together, you might also consider renting a house on VRBO.

For example, this Whimsical Lancaster House with a Porch in Amish Country is a peaceful retreat in the countryside. It's also quite close to the start of the Lititz Covered Bridge Tour.

Beautiful Drive to Historic Covered Bridges Lancaster County PA

Covered bridges always bring back a time of horse driven carts and slower life. We really need to plan a visit to Pennsylvania and see more. The bridges of Lancaster Country offer a nice selection. And no , I did not know the Lancaster was the capital of the U.S. for one day! Who can miss a road trip that includes a stop at the Wilbur Chocolate Store.

It’s true the covered bridges remind you of a more simple time. And when you’re in Lancaster, you’ll also see the Amish still driving around in horse-drawn buggies so you’ll really be reminded of those times!

Love the post. Have been to Lancaster many times but had forgotten how pretty it can be when you take your time and explore slowly.

Thanks so much for reading! It’s fun to see what you can find when you drive around the countryside, isn’t it?

1 Day Tour of Amish Country, Pennsylvania

One Day in Pennsylvania's Amish Country

It took Adam and I about three hours to make the drive from our home in the Washington, DC area to Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. A three-hour drive is just short enough that we don’t usually break up the ride with a stop, but it’s long enough that we’re always anxious to park the car and stretch our legs at our destination. As I planted my feet on the pavement and stretched through my torso when we arrived at our first stop, I locked my gaze on a pair of women wearing dark dresses and aprons carrying vegetables into nearby building. Beyond them, a buggy pulled by two horses crossed the road.

Amish County, or Pennsylvania Dutch Country, is the oldest Amish settlement in the United States. Visiting the picturesque countryside is, indeed, like stepping back into a world that existed a century or two ago. In between modern conveniences like grocery stores and restaurants, huge working farms serve as the economic backbone for the families residing there. Drivers of modern cars are careful as they pass horses and buggies as well as children on bicycles and scooters. Men in straw hats tend to their fields and animals, and women in long dresses sew, bake, and care for children.

Our visit was a lot of fun. We learned a lot about the history, culture, and beliefs of the Amish people, and after a great tour and some time exploring the area we both developed a genuine appreciation for the steadfast, devout community we encountered. If you have never heard of the Amish before—or if you are wondering if a trip to Pennsylvania Dutch Country would be worthwhile—here’s what you need to make the most of your visit!

Who Are the Amish?

driving tour amish country lancaster pa

Although they are called the Pennsylvania Dutch, the Amish originally came to the USA after being forced out of Switzerland. The group takes their name from Jakob Ammann, recognized as their leader. They share many similarities with the Mennonites, who also left Europe for the USA; however, a primary difference between the two groups is that the Amish are more conservative and will excommunicate, or shun, any member of their community who does not abide by their societal norms. The Mennonites do not promote such extremes in their own communities.

The Amish arrived in Philadelphia in the 18th century and eventually settled in Lancaster County, with groups moving to other locations throughout the country. They chose Pennsylvania because the state promised religious freedom, a welcome change from the persecution they faced in Europe. Today, there are close to 308,000 Amish—or Plain People, as they call themselves—in North America, making their homes in 31 states and four Canadian provinces. The largest communities are in Ohio, Indiana, and Pennsylvania, with Lancaster County housing 35,000 Amish people.

► Religion

The Amish are Anabaptists, which means they practice adult baptism. They believe adults should make a conscious choice to be baptized, something they cannot do of free will as children. Children are raised as part of families and communities with shared values, and as they approach adulthood they are given the choice to be baptized into the church or to become “English,” the Amish term a non-Anabaptist. This period, called rumspringa, describes the period of time between when a child turns 16 and their baptism. While movies like Kingpin and TV shows like Breaking Amish have characterized this time as one where Amish children run wild and break the rules, that’s not typical of the experience. It’s more often a time of increased socialization, where children are allowed to attend more events and may begin dating. While they may gain more exposure to technology and the English way of life, most Amish children decide to be baptized into the church instead of leaving the community behind.

driving tour amish country lancaster pa

If a child does not decide to be baptized, he or she is not shunned by the family. While most parents certainly hope their children decide to become baptized, children who do not can continue to maintain close relationships with their family and friends. However, if someone who is baptized breaks their commitment to the church or fails to adhere to the church’s regulations, they may be excommunicated, or shunned. While they are forgiving and will hear a confession of sin and apology, church leaders can vote to shun one of their own, which means a loss of status in the community. Shunned people cannot even have a meal with Amish family; the consequences of violating the church’s rules are severe.

The Amish do not worship in churches; instead, church is held in individual homes, and a family may host their entire community for a service once or twice a year. With 200-250 people attending, most people have a large room in their home reserved just for big gatherings. The church community supplies long benches to the host family, and the benches are delivered via a horse and buggy for the community to sit on during the service. Services are held every other Sunday, which means only twice each month. On alternate Sundays, they visit friends around the area, which is the single day of rest they enjoy during a two week period. The services are not conducted in English; instead, they are given in Pennsylvania Dutch, which is a German dialect that is also taught in schools.

► Family and Home Life

driving tour amish country lancaster pa

Next to religion, family is the most important part of the Amish experience. Amish families are large—most have seven or more children. They place more emphasis on a family’s identity than individuality.

Traditionally, most women marry in their late teens or early twenties, and men are a bit older than that. Weddings are most often held on Tuesdays and Thursdays in the late fall, which avoids any interruptions to the summer harvest season. Upon their marriage, men are permitted to grow a beard, which they never cut—the length of a man’s beard can shed some insight into how long he has been married! Typically, they have large families, and children are formally educated in one-room schoolhouses until the eighth grade, when they shift away from the classroom and begin to learn their role as part of the family.

Amish homes are, in a word, efficient. Because they do not use or rely on electricity, typically their lives unfold in the home’s kitchen, which is often the only heated room in any house. Without electricity, their appliances run off propane—in fact, some appliance manufactures have developed special models specifically for the Amish community, including washing machines sold by Maytag that run off propane.

driving tour amish country lancaster pa

The Amish follow a concept called Ordnung, which is the German word for order. They do not use electricity, they do not own televisions or have the Internet in their homes, and while communities do have access to telephones, the phones are not inside a residence—they are kept outside in phone booths. Even though they avoid technology to some degree they don’t view technology is evil; however, they do believe it can corrupt family values and pull apart the threads that weave a community together.

I was surprised to learn they don’t avoid all modern conveniences. They do not own cars, but they can be passengers in them; they are also able to use buses and trains. Flying is out of the question, though; they believe they should be on the ground at all times. Although they are predominantly farmers who grow crops, sell them, and can them, they also shop at grocery stores and eat in restaurants. One thing they do avoid are cameras. Pictures are out of the question for the Amish, as they do not allow graven images (which can lead to vanity). Some also believe that if you look into a camera when a photo is taken it can steal your soul.

A Daytrip to Amish Country

While you can spend far more than a single day in Pennsylvania’s Amish Country, one day is enough time to explore and learn about their culture!

► Take an Amish Country Tour

driving tour amish country lancaster pa

There are a few different companies that offer tours of Amish country, and many of them operate similar itineraries. We visited the Amish Village (based on pricing and scheduling), and we had a terrific afternoon with them! We enjoyed a great tour of a former Amish home now owned by the Amish Village but preserved in such a way that it’s still reflective of what a traditional home would look like today. The tour walked us through the room used for church services and large gatherings, the kitchen, and the bedrooms. We also took a 90-minute bus ride through some of Amish Country’s back roads, and our driver Paul provided an incredible amount of insight into the homes and farms we passed. My favorite was a small house owned by a woman in her late 80s; Paul pointed out her modest flower garden, and as the bus passed the house he noted she also maintained an enormous field of crops!

Our tour stopped twice, each time at an Amish-run farm stand, and we had a chance to sample pretzels and purchase goods made by the families. We couldn’t pass up a jar of spicy pickles, and I had to stifle a laugh when a brother and sister behind the counter fought over who would wrap it in newspaper and place it in a bag for me. No matter where you are or what your family background or beliefs may be, siblings arguing are something to which everyone can relate!

The Amish Village also had a nice area with farm animals, a replica of a one-room schoolhouse, and a few shops, which really rounded out our experience. I especially enjoyed seeing the animals, specifically the peacocks. I was surprised that Amish families would keep what I considered to be an exotic animal as a pet. As it turns out, peacocks make a loud, unmistakable screaming noise when they are startled, so they are wonderful alarm systems!

► Enjoy the Food

You will not go hungry in Amish Country. We were stuffed by the end of the afternoon! If you are planning a visit, don’t miss these favorites:

Lunch . Amish cuisine is basically hearty comfort food; expect fried chicken, beef, mashed potatoes, boiled vegetables, and bread. We had lunch at Dienner’s, an Amish-style restaurant with a buffet that allowed us to sample a few different dishes. Amish food is not big on spices but has plenty of flavor, so be sure to have a meal at a local restaurant while you are there. Katie’s Kitchen is another great Amish owned and operated family restaurant to try during your visit.

More Information: Dienners.com More Information: KatiesAmishKitchen.com

Whoopie Pies . My mom’s side of my family is from Maine , and when it comes to Whoopie Pies, Maine and Pennsylvania have a friendly argument over where the dessert was first created. I have to side with Maine in that battle, but I can attest to the fact Whoopie Pies in Amish Country are very tasty. For the uninitiated, Whoopie Pies are two circular cake slices with cream filling in the middle. We tried a classic chocolate cake as well as an oatmeal Whoopie Pie, and both were soft, flavorful, and creamy. Almost every bakery had Whoopie Pies , and often they are only $1.00!

Shoofly Pie . Shoofly Pie is basically a molasses crumb pie: a delicious molasses filling topped with sugary crumbs. There are two versions, including the dry-bottomed pie that is baked longer for a more cake-like consistency, and the wet-bottomed version that has a stickier crust. We tried the wet-bottomed version at both Dutch Haven and Bird-In-Hand Bakery. Dutch Haven is a touristy stop that specializes in souvenirs and furniture, but visitors get a free sample of Shoofly Pie for stopping in to shop. Bird-In-Hand Bakery has dozens of tasty baked goods for sale, not the least of which is Shoofly Pie and Whoopie Pie.

► Get Lost and Explore

Some of the most fun we had was just driving around Lancaster County. After our bus tour, we could easily tell the difference between Amish homes and English homes, and we had a great time exploring and enjoying the picturesque countryside. Knowing that they are community-focused, we had a great time driving away from the tourist destinations and observing the homes and farms that are so central to their lives and livelihood.

Hotels in Amish Country

Planning a trip to Amish County, or Pennsylvania Dutch Country? There are plenty of hotels in the area, but Harrisburg is the largest city close to Amish Country and it’s a great place to start your adventure! Here are some deals to consider.

Visit Amish Country

A visit to Amish Country may feel like a trip back in time at first, but very quickly you’ll start to understand that just because they live and dress more simply than we’re accustomed to doing does not make them more primitive. I found their commitment to their families and communities refreshing and inspiring. Although I won’t be giving up my cell phone or TV anytime soon, I did find a number of practices and traits I would like to incorporate into my own life after witnessing the impact simplicity has on their lives. A good travel experience should encourage you to discover and embrace new ideas, and we learned a lot from our visit to Amish Country!

Day Tripping USA

Ultimate day trip to Amish Country, PA

I have always wanted to visit Amish Country , but never had the chance as my trips to New York or Philly were already filled up. But Lancaster County is an easy hour and half drive from Philadelphia , so now I can’t wait to go.

This post is written by one of my awesome freelancers who lived in New York for years and explored the nooks and crannies of the city and surrounding states.

driving tour amish country lancaster pa

When you arrive into Amish Country in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, it’ll feel like you’ve entered an historical movie set.

If you’re visiting Amish Country from a big city like nearby Philadelphia or New York City, you’ll feel like you stepped into a time machine and gone back a few hundred years to visit a completely foreign culture.

But this is why I so want to visit. This is the charm of these unique historical and cultural areas in rural Pennsylvania. You’ll find serene farmlands, a culture steeped in history and faith, and some of the best produce markets in the northern United States.

How to plan the Ultimate Day Trip to Amish Country, Pennsylvania

How far is Lancaster PA from NYC? It’s about 168 miles and will take around 2 hours, 45 minutes if you drive. More info on how to get there below.

Here is a quick guide to everything you need to know to plan the perfect day trip to Amish Country, PA!

Getting to Amish Country in Lancaster Pennsylvania

Unless you book a  tour , like this one from New York City , you will need to drive to get around Lancaster County where Amish Country is.

The  Amtrak Train  or  Ourbus  bus (very limited schedules) will take you to Lancaster City but to get to many of the more authentic Amish experiences in the smaller towns in the eastern part of the county, you will need to use the backroads where there is no public transportation.

And since the Amish people are prohibited from using cars (we will get to this and other cultural practices that will seem alien to you later!) getting a cab to take you around will be difficult unless you don’t mind waiting for an Uber each time you need to move. We recommend driving there or  renting a car after taking public transportation into Lancaster.

Tips on planning your Amish itinerary

Give yourself plenty of time to get to different sites.

Lancaster County, where the Amish people have their villages and farms, is three times bigger than New York City while being a million times slower. The vast farmlands and slower pace will leave you feeling like you’ve escaped the worries of life.

But with this stress-free pace comes the possibility for random things to slow down your day. For instance, you will likely get stuck behind horse carriages carrying Amish families if you go into the backroads (that thing about prohibiting cars again!). If that happens, you will have no choice but to enjoy the view while  slowly  making your way to your next activity.

Have a plan

You won’t be able to do things on a whim if you go into the more rural parts of the towns. For example, if you don’t book a  tour , you’ll need to plan your day so that by the time you’re ready for lunch you’re either in the center of a town or close to one of the fantastic  smorgasbord restaurants  as you won’t find restaurants on every corner like you would in Philadelphia or NYC.

Wear appropriate shoes

Make sure to wear shoes made for walking and getting dirty. You’ll see why this is absolutely necessary in the next section where we suggest things to do on your Amish Country day trip!

The best things to do on an Amish Country day trip

Most people take a day trip to Amish Country to see the unique way of life of a people who’ve wholeheartedly held onto the same historical and religious practices they had centuries ago.

The Amish way of life is centered on the things God has provided in nature as they believe modern development and materialism leads away from the spiritual way of life most important to them.

●      Tour A Working Farm

Start your day trip in nature and take a  farm tour  while you are rested and have the energy to walk a lot. Dairy farms are most popular in the area so expect to get the chance to milk cows, collect organic eggs, and observe the sustainable ways the Amish power their farms (electricity is too far removed from nature to be used as a power source!)

Amish corn for sale

While you’re there you may be tempted to snap photos of the Amish in action.  Stop! Don’t do it!

Taking photos isn’t appreciated by the Amish. They are forbidden from having their faces on any image as graven images tempted people away from God in biblical times. The photos you see in the post do not show faces.

●      Shop for Amish Crafts and Antiques

After your tour, experience authentic Amish culture at an Amish crafts shop. Since Amish people shun traditional mediums of entertainment, they use crafting as a way to connect socially.

‘ Quilting bees ’ where groups of Amish women gather while quilting have given birth to some of the nation’s best  quilting shops where you can get a famous Amish quilt and wear crafters from all over the US send their own blankets to be finished by hand by these talented needle workers.

Furniture shops  are also open to the public if you want to see how the Amish make their popular mission and shaker furniture.

Amish Country landscape

●      Take a Horse and Buggy Ride through the Countryside

After crafting, see how the Amish really live by taking a buggy tour past the homes on the backroads. Cars are prohibited in Amish culture as they are considered materialistic and a distraction from community. If you are to get a  tour  from an authentic Amish person while on your day trip, it’s going to be by horse buggy.

Expect to see streams gurgling by the roadsides if you visit in spring or summer (these are the best times to visit Amish Country). In some spots, for as far as your eyes can see, there’ll only be rolling, green fields. Also look out for Amish families playing games in their yards as they do not use modern gadgets like televisions or video games for entertainment.

●      Visit an Amish Market or a Smorgasbord

When it’s lunch time, leave the rural backroads and head into the center of the town where your morning activity is closest to, to experience some of the best small town Americana foods.

The Amish have retained traditional American foods like fried chicken, biscuits, apple pies, and have huge buffet dinners (see a list of Smorgasbords here) that you’ll want to try. The  markets   are also excellent for an authentic Amish lunch.

●     Take An Organized Tour Of An Amish Village or Town

For the afternoon of your Amish Country day trip you may want to explore one of the quaint towns on your own or take an organized  tour  of one of the following villages as the day darkens. See Discover Lancaster for info on tours.

●      Paradise

Paradise  is perfect for quaint bakeries, quilt shops, and historic covered bridges.

●     Bird In Hand

Bird In Hand  is the quaint name of our favorite town to explore on an Amish Country day trip because of the cultural experiences around the village. The countryside is idyllic, there’s authentic Amish theater, and a one room Amish schoolhouse!

●      Strasburg

Strasburg is all about railroad history so the town is a good bet for history buffs. It also has unique shops, corn mazes and an old fashioned creamery.

●      Farm & House Tour

Take a tour through an authentic Amish Farm and House . Founded in 1955 in an Amish family home, this “museum” will provide a great educational for life in the Amish community.

For dinner, try a burger at  Harvest Cafe  in Kitchen Kettle Village after finishing your day shopping in  Kitchen Kettle  before it closes at 6pm (5pm in colder months).

A day trip to the small towns of Amish Country is just what you need if you want to experience life in a new way or need a peaceful retreat from everyday life.

Bidding at an Amish Mud Sale

Special events!

If you’re visiting in February through April, you should go to one of the famous Amish Mud Sales . These huge auctions, named for the winter thaw, seem chaotic with several going on at once, but up to 20,000 people come to buy handmade quilts, furniture, antiques and produce. Plus horse and buggies if you need one!

All proceeds benefit the local fire companies. Check out this calendar for upcoming Mud Sales .

Because one post is never enough!

Hi,everyone.

I know that The Amish Farm and House and The Amish Village are both open 7 days a week, so those will be easy to get to. But my question is, are these different enough to visit/pay for both, or should we choose one?

Are the bus and buggy tours similar in the information that is given and stops that are made, or should we plan to do both? By bus tour, I am speaking of the ones at Amish Farm and House and Amish Village. We are considering Aaron and Jessica's Buggy Rides as I understand it is in the complex with our hotel.

Roots Country Market & Auction - Tuesday 9-9

Lancaster Central Market - Tuesday 6-3?

Lititz - Julius Sturgis Pretzel Bakery? Is the tour worth it for adults only or more geared for children? schedule ahead? Wilbur Candy shop?

Old Windmill Farm/Lil' Miniature Horse Farm/Landis Valley Farm/Lapp Valley Farm/Cherry Crest Adventure Farm - Try to hit all? A couple of them?

Wheatland- won't be open Sunday or Monday

Euphrata Cloister - Only open Sunday and Wednesday when we're there

Strasburg Railroad?

We're interested in a visit with an Amish family. I have seen several meal opportunities, but most are only offered Friday and Saturday nights and we won't be there on a weekend. Does anyone have information on someone who offers this during the week?

Kitchen Kettle Village , Riehl's, shops in Miller's complex

Best ice cream? Best Pretzels? Best restaurants for dinner?

Thank you in advance for any suggestions on how to group some of these things. I know we don't have time for nearly everything on this list, but we're very excited to explore and learn about this beautiful area that we are visiting for the first time. Just looking for some advice on what to prioritize and how to group by vicinity.

The most difficult will be the Dinner with an Amish Family These are normally Friday Saturday only

They Normally do bus groups but can sometimes fit in extra people

Call their number 610-593-1206 and leave a message I believe they sometimes have meals during the week

For the re-created Amish Home I would do one only

I would probably suggest neither the Amish Village or Amish Farm but rather the Amish Experience which is in the same tourist complex you are staying in

They run a VIsit in Person (VIP) tour at 5Pm Monday through Saturday that ,besides visiting two Amish businesses, also lets you visit with an Amish couple and ask them questions

They also have a re-created house you can tour and a good presentation- Jacob's Choice, which dramatizes the choice every Amish young adult must make- whether to Join the church and live by its rules or leave the only way of life they have known for the non-Amsh world

As to a buggy ride- I would only do this for the experience of riding in a buggy. Because buggy's move so slowly it is not a good way to tour the countryside and you are limited in your stops

I will post later with your other issues

Best Pretzels

There are several that are really good

Immergut on Route340 in Intercourse is the easiest to get to and would fit in with your Kitchen Kettle visit They are Amish run

Our personal favorite is

Countryside Road Stand

2966 Stumptown Road

Ronks Pa 17572

which is on an Amish farm beside their delicious pretzels they also have a good craft and quilt shop

They are a mile from Riehl's Quilts and crafts which is the biggest Amish owned Quilt shop

For Ice cream we like Lapp Valley Farms

We prefer to go to their actual farm on Mentzer Road as much for the farm atmosphere as the ice cream although they have a new shop on Route 340 east of Intercourse

Old Windmill Farm and Lil Miniature horse farm are adjacent to each other they are both geared to kids, but the farm tour and miniature horse farm tour are interesting

Cherry Crest Adventure farm is a farm themed Amusement park You are too early for the corn maze You might look at the other activities on the website and see if they interest you enough to justify the price Many of the activities are aimed at kids

Ephrata Cloister is unique and we have always enjoyed the tours It was set up by a celibate german sect- similar to the Amish in their pacifist beliefs but much stricter

Landis Valley is a re-created 19th century Pennsylvania German (not Amish) farming village One problem, with going during the week is that I am not sure the craftsmen- blacksmith, potter etc. are there especially in May You might call to inquire

Wheatland is very well done tour with knowledgable docents

There are too many restaurants to narrow down

If you want an Amish run restaurant Katies Kitchen on Route 896 north of Strasburg has good diner type food with some Pennsylvania Dutch specialties

If you want a buffet I think Millers has the best quality- and is the most expoensive

Finally a word on The Farmers markets and the Railroad attraction

Lancaster Central is a urban market and is much more upscale than Rutts If you look at the merchant list you will see this- Artisan breads gourmet coffee etc There are some Pa Dutch vendors

Rutts is more of Country market Many Pa Dutch and state fair type food stands There is also a flea market section I would do both and would try to hit both by the early afternoon or before

Strasburg has a number of excellant Railroad attractions The Railroad uses beautifully restored coal burning engines and antique cars

The State Railroad Museum has a marvelous collection of trains- especially Pennsylvania Railroad trains

The toy train museum has an excellent collection of toy trains and many operating layouts

So if you are interested in trains these are a must

However as a tour the Railroad is nothing special You see the same attractive farm scenery you would see from the road and there are no Amish themed stops

Therefore like the buggy ride I would only do it if the idea of riding in a well restored coalfired train appeals to you

Well it depends on your interests

Wheatland is basically a house tour of a Presidents house Its a very well done house tour but in the end thats what it is

Landis Valley is a living history museum with demonstrators such as a blacksmith and tinsmith -( I may have erred when I mentioned a potter earlier)

They also have a pretty good display of Pennsylvania Dutch folk art including a very good display of redware pottery

For me this would be the longest visit but thats because I really enjoy this type of museum

Ephrata cloisters is unique because its so unusual- its as if someone transplanted a medieval german monastory to Pennsylvania

The film presentation at the visitor center is really well done The tour- of the buildings is interesting because you can see the spartan living conditions- blocks of wood for pillows- that they lived under

As you can see from the map Landis Valley is located between the other two So I would decide whether you want to go to Ephrata more than Wheatland or vice versa and start there That way if you run out of time you have not missed your top choice.

Yana Wilson

JERSEY CITY, N.J. — This week’s Mizuho Americas Open will see 120 LPGA Tour players compete alongside 24 top amateurs from the American Junior Golf Association at Liberty National Golf Club in the second edition of the event hosted by Michelle Wie West. The amateurs will tee it up in their own modified Stableford competition over the four days of tournament play, and these juniors have got some serious game, just like their professional counterparts.

Meet just a few of the AJGA participants in this week’s field at the Mizuho Americas Open:

Gianna Clemente

Gianna Clemente

LPGA Tour fans will definitely recognize Gianna Clemente’s name on the tee sheet this week. The now 16-year-old Monday qualified for three straight LPGA Tour events when she was 14, teeing it up in the CPKC Women’s Open, the Dana Open and the Kroger Queen City Championship presented by P&G in 2022. Clemente won the 2023 Girls’ Junior PGA Championship and took home the 2023 U.S. Women’s Amateur Four-Ball title alongside her playing partner Avery Zweig. The Florida resident finished sixth in this event last year, with a 72-hole total of 138 points in the modified Stableford competition. Clemente is a member of the first U.S. Junior National Team.

Aphrodite Deng

Aphrodite Deng

Fourteen-year-old Aphrodite Deng of Short Hills, N.J., is currently best known for winning the inaugural edition of The Nelly Invitational, an AJGA event hosted by current Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings No. 1 Nelly Korda. Deng has one additional AJGA victory to her credit, the Rolex Tournament of Champions, a title she earned on November 22, 2023, after defeating Jasmine Koo by a whopping five shots at the Canyons Course at TPC San Antonio.

Jasmine Koo

Jasmine Koo

Jasmine Koo made headlines a few weeks ago at The Chevron Championship after a lucky break on the final hole at The Club at Carlton Woods. The 18-year-old’s second shot on the par 5 would have landed in the water had it not hit a sign located near the 18th green and bounced over the rest of the penalty area, landing safely on the other side of the lake. Koo ultimately made birdie on her last hole to post a four-day total of 3-under and earn low amateur honors at the first LPGA Tour major of the 2024 season. The California native won the 2023 Women’s Western Amateur and participated in the 2023 U.S. Junior Solheim Cup in Spain. She tied for ninth last year at Liberty National Golf Club.

Asterisk Talley

Asterisk Talley

Asterisk Talley just won the U.S. Women’s Amateur Four-Ball on Wednesday, May 15 with her playing partner Sarah Lim at Oak Hills Country Club, quickly hopping on a plane to come compete in the Mizuho Americas Open on Thursday afternoon. Talley is the second-youngest winner in the event’s history, claiming her first USGA championship title at just 15 years old. Talley won the Junior Invitational at Sage Valley in March and captured three AJGA titles in 2023, including the SERI PAK Desert Junior, Rolex Girls Junior Championship and C.T. Pan Foundation Championship. Talley was named a member of the very first U.S. Junior National Team in March.

Yana Wilson

driving tour amish country lancaster pa

Nevada native Yana Wilson won the 2023 edition of the Mizuho Americas Open after earning 147 points across four days of tournament play in the Stableford format and will look to defend her title this week in Jersey City, N.J. The now 17-year-old was named the AJGA Girls Player of the Year in 2023 and won the U.S. Girls’ Junior in 2022 over Gianna Clemente. While still competing as an amateur, Wilson won a professional event on the Cactus Tour earlier this year at Sun City Country Club in Arizona, defeating Antonia Malate by two shots. She is committed to play collegiate golf at the University of Oregon.

COMMENTS

  1. Amish Country Scenic Drive

Experience this historical landmark with a contemporary theatre performance or register for a backstage tour. Our drive begins leaving Lancaster on PA-462 east to PA-340, the Old Philadelphia Pike.
