London Transport Zones

London is divided into 1–9 zones*, but most of it fits into zones 1–6. Central London is zone 1, zone 2 is the ring around zone 1, zone 3 is the ring around 2 and so on.

*zones 7,8 and 9 cover a small area just outside North West London including Watford, Croxley Green, Rickmansworth, Amersham or Chalfont & Latimer.

It’s important to be aware of London’s transport zones and to find out what zone a station is in. Ticket prices for One Day, Weekly or Monthly Travelcards or the money deducted from a Pay as you go Oyster card or contactless card can vary considerably according to how many zones you travel through.

The zones do not apply to bus travel . You can travel by bus all over London (zones 1–6) with any Travelcard.

First time visitor to London? See our guide to London’s transport tickets

London zone map

You can see the zones on a tube map, coloured in either white or grey.

  • View a standard PDF version of the tube map
  • If you stay in a part of London that is not on the tube network, see the National Rail services map (pdf) to find the zone for your closest train station.

What London transport zones do I need?

Find the closest underground or train station to your accommodation. Then find the zone of the station you want to travel to. If you’re visiting London for sightseeing or to shop this will probably be zone 1.

When you know the zones you need to pay for, what you do depends on the type of ticket/pass you buy:

Weekly or monthly Travelcards

You buy a Travelcard that covers all the zones between where you stay and where you want to visit/your regular final destination. For example:

  • if you stay in Shepherd’s Bush (zone 2) and plan to visit central London (zone 1), you need a zone 1-2 Travelcard.
  • If you stay in Wimbledon (zone 3) and travel to/from central London, you need a zone 1-3 Travelcard.

Pay as you go Oyster card

If you use a Pay as you go Oyster card , top-up your card with enough money to either pay for a single journey for the zones you travel through or add enough money to cover the cost of the ‘daily cap’ if you want unlimited travel for the day.

Contactless

With a contactless card, you do not have to worry about the zones as the system will calculate the fare for you the next day. Remember to always touch in and out on the tube or local trains (with the same card!) to ensure you are charged the correct amount.

How to pay for transport outside your normal transport zone

There may be occasions when you need to travel outside the zones on your weekly or monthly Travelcard.

The procedure is slightly different if you have a Travelcard loaded on an Oyster card, or a paper Travelcard:

Travelcards on an Oyster card

If you already have a weekly Travelcard for certain zones and want to visit a place outside that zone, top-up your Oyster card with some Pay as you go money to cover the cost of travelling between the last zone on your Travelcard and the zone you want to visit.

For example, if you have a zone 1-2 weekly Travelcard and you want to visit Richmond in zone 4, you need to add extra money to your Oyster to cover the fare for zones 3 and 4.

See Oyster single fares to find a fare. You can add extra money to your Oyster card at a tube station ticket machine.

Paper Travelcards

If you have a paper version of the Travelcard, you need to buy an extension ticket from the underground station ticket machine.

Stations in two zones

Some stations are on the border of two zones. These stations have a white box around their name on the tube map. Tickets to these stations are slightly different.

For example:

  • Earl’s Court tube station is in zone 1/2. If you stay in Earl’s Court and take the tube to any other station in zone 1 (central London), you pay the zone 1 single fare with a pay as you go Oyster or contactless card.
  • If you travel from Earl’s Court to Heathrow (zone 6), the single fare is charged from zone 2 to zone 6, not from zone 1-6.
  • ABBA Arena is in zone 2/3. From zone 1, you pay the zone 1-2 fare. If you are staying in outer London and are travelling to the stadium without travelling through central London (zone 1), you pay the the fare to zone 3.

How to save money on travel to central London from zones 2-6

A major benefit of the Travelcard is that it’s valid on the buses for the whole of London, regardless of the zones you buy.

If you stay in zones 2-6 and want to travel to zone 1 (central London) a good money-saving tip is to buy a weekly or monthly Travelcard excluding zone 1 , but including zone 2. You can then take the tube/train to the zone 2 station close to zone 1 and then use the bus to travel to and around zone 1.

This only works with a weekly or monthly Travelcard, but you will save a money.

  • If you stay in zone 5, a zone 1-5 weekly Travelcard is  £73.00 .
  • A zone 2-5 weekly Travelcard is £42.50 , saving you £30.50 a week
  • A zone 1-5 monthly Travelcard is  £280.40
  • A zone 2-5 monthly Travelcard is  £163.20 a saving of £111.70 a month

Popular places to visit outside central London (Zone 1)

A Lady in London

And Traveling the World

Lady’s Pretty Guide to Forest Hill, London

There’s only one London neighborhood with a walrus. I know, I know. It sounds odd. But if you know what I’m talking about, you already know which part of the city I’m referring to. If you don’t, you’re going to want to get to know Forest Hill, London.

Forest Hill, London

Forest Hill, London

Down in south London , Forest Hill is east of Dulwich and East Dulwich , and south of Peckham and Nunhead .

It’s a residential area with a celebrated museum, elegant Victorian houses, red phone boxes, and great independent shops and restaurants. As the name suggests, its height means it has views of the London skyline, too.

How to Get to Forest Hill

While not on the tube, Forest Hill has its own train station and is served by a number of buses.

There are a lot of trains from central London stations that run through this neighborhood, and it’s on the Overground network as well. That means getting here is easy and there’s no excuse for staying away.

Things to Do in Forest Hill, London

Once you’re in the area, there are tons of things to do in Forest Hill. I like to start on the streets around the station, which is where many of the neighborhood’s shops and restaurants are.

The intersection of London Road, Dartmouth Road, and Devonshire Road is buzzing with coffee shops, pubs, and places to browse and buy.

Canvas and Cream in Forest Hill, London

One of my favorite cafes in Forest Hill is Canvas & Cream. This place has great decor and a secret garden out back.

I love the little nooks with sitting areas full of armchairs and fireplaces, not to mention the terrace where I like watching the world go by.

Coffee at Canvas and Cream in Forest Hill, London

Around the corner, St David Coffee House is a good place to get a caffeine fix. Its big outdoor table is perfect on sunny days, and I love how the green vines climb up the facade of the shop.

Once I’ve had my coffee, I like walking down Dartmouth Road in Forest Hill. There are more cafes here, and lots of shops selling everything from antiques to home furnishings.

Art in Forest Hill, London

Side streets with names like Bird-In-Hand Passage delight the eyes, and the library is a treat of a historic building. There’s even a pub in the old post office.

House in Forest Hill, London

Dotted throughout these buildings and streets is some of London’s famous street art.

From colorful walls outside Forest Hill station to murals tucked away around quiet corners like Havelock Walk, it’s fun to seek out the area’s many examples of it.

Horniman Museum and Gardens

Beyond the high street, Forest Hill is best known for its museum. If you’re wondering what the aforementioned walrus is about, this is where it comes into the story.

Horniman Museum Conservatory

The Horniman Museum and Gardens is a world-class museum that opened in 1901 to house the collections of Frederick John Horniman.

The museum started with his internationally important anthropology and musical instrument collections, and has expanded over time.

Free to enter, today it’s home to an aquarium, butterfly house, animal walk, music gallery, world gallery, nature trail, and more.

Horniman Museum Gardens, London

But the real star is the walrus. Killed in the 19th century, this poor creature was stuffed in every skin fold until it looked like a walrus-shaped balloon.

This is probably because over a hundred years ago few people had actually seen a live walrus. The taxidermist likely didn’t know what it should look like, so stuffed it until every bit of skin was taut.

Horniman Walrus

The Horniman Walrus is not only the museum’s most famous resident, but also a symbol of Forest Hill. It’s even on the sign for the neighborhood under the railway bridge.

Forest Hill Sign, London

The actual building was designed by Charles Harrison Townsend in the Arts and Crafts Movement style, and is still eye-catching today.

Horniman Museum, London

It’s surrounded by 16 acres of manicured gardens with flower beds that change colors and styles throughout the year. There’s a beautiful conservatory on the grounds, as well as sweeping lawns with views of the London skyline.

Sunday Market in Forest Hill, London

In fact, one of the best views of London can be seen from the weekly Sunday market at the Horniman Museum.

Horniman Museum Bandstand

The area around the bandstand is beloved for its weekend food stalls, which sell local produce, seasonal fruits and vegetables, artisan bread, chocolates, homemade jams, cakes, and other prepared foods and drinks.

It makes Sunday mornings and afternoons great times to go to Forest Hill.

Horniman Museum Farmers' Market, London

Green Chain Walk

If you’re like me and you tend to eat more than you should, you’ll be happy to learn that Forest Hill is on the Green Chain Walk.

This 50-mile (82-kilometer) route stretches from the Thames to Nunhead Cemetery, going through as much parkland as possible along the way.

The Horniman Museum’s gardens are among the many wooded areas and parks along the Green Chain Walk.

It’s easy to pick up the trail here and follow the signposts south to Crystal Palace or north to Nunhead. There are maps online if you want more guidance, too.

If you go north, you’ll pass next to one of Forest Hill’s most photogenic sights. The red phone box, New York taxi, and vintage car combination outside K Libretto and Daughters butcher shop on Wood Vale are a trifecta for Instagram.

Forest Hill

But with so much to see and do in Forest Hill, there’s little temptation to leg it out of the area. I hope you enjoy exploring this part of London as much as I have. And when you go, don’t miss the walrus.

I don’t think I had ever heard of Forest Hill, but now I’m planning to visit the Sunday Market, the eclectic Horniman museum and do a bit of that Green Chain Walk. Thank you for this post.

You’re welcome! I’m really glad to hear that. I hope you enjoy it all!

Yes indeed. Thanks for sharing this post and I definitely intend to visit this area.

You’re welcome!

I was born and grew up in Forest Hill but haven’t been back there for many years, after looking at the photos here It appears to have altered beyond recognition. I don’t think the road I was born and lived in exists anymore (Malham Road) my son was born in Beadnall Road, not sure if that is still there. It was a very working class area with a true community spirit in the 50s. I may still have relatives living there in Stanstead Road and maybe a walk down memory lane is needed.

Yeah, the area has changed a lot over the years!

I have lived here for 2 years and Malham Road and Beadnall Road are still here 🙂

Not familiar with this area. Thanks for sharing!

You’re welcome! I hope you can visit someday.

A lovely tribute to Forest Hill. It has certainly changed over the years. But I am privileged to still call it my home. It’s a beautiful part of London.

That’s great! It is indeed beautiful.

Things to Do in Forest Hill: An Insider’s Area Guide

Love This? Save and Share!

Forest Hill is one of London’s most chilled-out areas. Ready to explore? Discover the best things to do in Forest Hill London, with this insider’s guide.

Inside the bustling cosmopolitan borough of Lewisham lies little Forest Hill. What was once a small, wooded area is now a quaint little borough filled with beautiful walks, cafes, and shops.

Forest Hill got its name in 1790 from a developer – it’s a fitting description for the area, encapsulating its relaxing, natural features.

Initially, the name only applied to a small part of Honor Oak Road, which was a little isolated wood at the edge of Sydenham Common. But over time, Forest Hill grew into the area we know and love today.

Often overlooked in favour of the more popular areas of London, Forest Hill has many beautiful shops, cafes, restaurants, and museums that are a must-see for any visitors exploring this gorgeous part of South London.

Ready to explore?

Things To Do In Forest Hill

Explore the horniman museum and gardens.

Horniman Museum

Perhaps the biggest attraction of Forest Hill and a must-see for any visitor, The Horniman Museum first opened in 1901 as a place to house the collections of Frederick John Horniman.

After expanding over time, today it hosts a butterfly house, music gallery, animal walk, nature trail, aquarium, world gallery, and much more. Most of the museum and gardens are free to visit although there is a charge for the aquarium and butterfly house.

Among its most famous exhibits is the iconic walrus. After being killed in the 19th century, the taxidermist charged with stuffing it got a little carried away with the result that it now looks like a very overstuffed walrus-like balloon. Now a symbol of Forest Hill, it can be seen on roadsigns around the area and remains one of the area’s greatest attractions.

Horniman Hill

If the weather’s good when you visit the Horniman museum (which is great on a rainy day), you can’t not visit its beautiful gardens as well. You can bask 16 acres of beautiful gardens lined with flower beds of different colours depending on the time of year..

Not only that, there’s a wonderful conservatory where you can walk across the lawns with beautiful views of the London skyline.

Appreciate Nature on Cox’s Walk

Sydenham Hill Woods

Cox’s Walk was an 18th-century public walk that has survived the urbanisation of southeast London and remains as it was today. Running next to Dulwich Woods and Dulwich Golf Course, the walk leads to Sydenham Hill.

Consisting of 3 acres of gardens, parks, and urban spaces, Cox’s walk is considered one of London’s most beautiful natural spots with 200 species of plants, as well as fungi, birds and forest mammals.

Indeed, it is London Wildlife Trust’s oldest nature reserves comprising remnants of Victorian-era gardens, stunning views towards the City and The Shard and part of the disused Nunhead to Crystal Palace (High Level) railway line where you can walk on the disused track bed.

Once you get to the end, you’ll find a closed tunnel that is now a registered bat roost.

Marvel at the Greenery on Green Chain Walk

Green Chain Walk

There is another excellent walk in Forest Hill. When you have completed (and loved) Cox’s Walk, you may want to set your sites on Green Chain Walk.

This walk is 50 miles long and split into 11 sections, beginning at the Thames and finishing at Nunhead Cemetery . On the way, you will pass through stunning parkland and greenery, including the Horniman Museum Gardens.

You can join the trail in Forest Hill and choose to go north or south, depending on your mood.

If you choose to go north, then you will be greeted with some of the most photogenic, iconic sights of Forest Hill, including the unique trinity of a vintage car, New York taxi, and red phone box.- perfect for those with a keen eye for photography.

Admire the Beautiful Street Art

Forest Hill is home to many inspirational pieces of street art that you can find dotted around as you wander through the area, on the side of buildings, shop shutters, and walls. From hidden murals in the quiet corners of the borough (think Havelock Walk) to the bright, vibrant walls just outside the station, there is plenty to see.

Begin at Forest Hill Station and wander along Dartmouth Road, taking in pieces by Milo Tchais and local artist DRT, whose art resembles fantastic stained glass windows. Once you reach the Job Centre, turn around and view the siren from mythology painted by Derlon Almeida.

Then head down London Road, which is full of eye-catching pieces, including the saxophone and butterfly and mummy caskets. Head back towards the station to take in the traditional Forest Hill railway sign under the bridge, painted by Lionel Stanhope before going down Stanstead Road.

Here you’ll be greeted by none other than Johnny Bravo. Continue until you pass the Honor Oak Pub (stop if you want to have a drink!) and take in some of the faded signage of years past, and at Brockley Rise, take in a piece above the MOT shop by world-renowned artist Dan Kitchener.

Finish at Crofton Park Station, where another Lionel Stanhope piece will greet you before getting on a train and giving your insta a massive boost!

Dacres Wood Nature Reserve

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Andrew Grantham (@andrew_grantham)

Dacres Wood Nature Reserve sits between Forest Hill and Sydenham train stations. It occupies 2.5 hectares of land and was once part of a massive Victorian garden.

Unfortunately, the reserve isn’t open all year round, but there are open days held on the last Saturday of each month between 1 and 4 pm, giving you ample opportunity to explore.

Once there, you will be greeted by vast green spaces, a variety of diverse fauna, and the final remnants of the Croydon Canal, which was closed officially in 1841.

You can also hire the field in Dacres Wood Nature Reserve for your events and parties, while the nature reserve also hosts educational events including arts and crafts days, den building, and even woodland picnics.

Take a Needlework Workshop

Local haberdashery store Stag and Bow is a great place to head if you enjoy needlework, and other fabric-based crafts. As well as being the go-to place to stock up on supplies, they also run regular classes and workshops to help you feed your inner creativity.

From survival sewing skills to learning your way around that sewing machine that’s been sitting in the attic for decades and more. From beginners crochet classes to understanding the finer points of darning.

Quilting, Sashiko (a Japanese way of fixing and strengthening clothes), knitting repairs, and patchwork workshops are among those also available. So, if you’ve been wanting to get learn how to get started with fabrics, needles, and threads, there’s no excuse not to.

Go for a Swim at Forest Hill Pools

We love to keep active, we love water, and we love combining the two. One of our fave spots to indulge these twin interests is at the gorgeous Victorian red-brick style building that is home to Forest Hill pools.

With a six-lane 25m swimming pool that caters to the casual swimmer and those that like to glide (or splash) up and down lanes, while the 16.7m teaching pool offers a family-friendly spot for kids and parents to safely explore the water.

Combining classic architecture dating back to 1884 with a sleek, modern facility next door, this historic swimming spot is bound to make a splash with you.

Restaurants & Bars

Canvas & cream.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Canvas & Cream (@canvasandcreamse23)

A stone’s throw from Forest Hill Station is Canvas & Cream . Opened in 2012 as a community venture, the space needed some TLC as it stood without electricity, walls, or plumbing. Locals helped kit the space out and Canvas & Cream became a reality.

The result is a charming cafe, restaurant, and bar filled with curious little nooks, armchairs and a beautiful secret garden. They also have seven artists studios available for hire and also host quarterly open studio sessions.

Food-wise, they do killer brunches, with ranch eggs and the haddock kedgeree really hitting the spot. After midday it’s lunchtime, with salads, flatbreads and burgers available. Delectable cakes, ice cream and pancakes do the rounds for afters.

Sylvan Post

Canvas & Cream isn’t the only noteworthy place to grab some grub near the station. A short walk down Dartmouth Road will bring you to the Sylvan Post , a former post office that’s now become a charming boozer.

While there’s a great range of craft ales and spirits on offer for the discerning drinker, the real treat comes when you look at their food options.

You can grab three small plates for £21, including truffle mushroom pate, cheesy jalapeno bites (they have a kick!) and incredibly moreish red onion and carrot bhajis. Want something bigger? No problem. The Lentil shepherds pie is perfect for a winter warmer, and the burger mayo on the cheeseburger doesn’t disappoint.

Junction 876

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Junction876 (@junction876)

We love exploring different cuisines and you can’t really say you’ve visited Forest Hill without trying out some fresh and tasty authentic Caribbean vibes. Junction 876 is the place to head to get a taste of calypso cuisine whatever the weather in SE23.

Sit indoors or outside as you sample their stunning eclectic menu. Go for fresh seafood dishes, proper Caribbean curries and stews, or take on their twist on a West Indian classic jerk chicken. Wash it down with a rum cocktail and you’ll be sashaying your way home with a wonderfully warm glow inside.

Top Shopping Spots

Dartmouth road.

Dartmouth Road is home to an array of big names and independent shops – it’s the top spot for some retail therapy in Forest Hill.

While there’s the usual brand names that adorn most suburban high streets, you can grab a massage, head into the Art Gallery and dealer at Doopo Doopo, explore the charming gift shops Max Made Me Do It and Farr & Wyde , and find just about everything else you could need within a couple of minutes walk.

Other shopping streets in Forest Hill include Devonshire Road, London Road, and Perry Cale.

The Horniman Market

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Horniman Market (@hornimanmarket)

The Sunday Market takes place at the Horniman Museum and makes Sundays one of the best days of the week at Forest Hill.

The bandstand in the gardens is the centre point of this market, where you’ll find stalls selling all kinds of locally grown produce, breads, artisan chocolates, homemade jam and preserves, chutneys and glazes, and some of the best beers, wines and spirits.

This market is open every Sunday from 10am to 3pm.

Exploring London's Fare Zone: A Guide to Forest Hill Rail Station

Forest Hill Rail Station fare zone is 3

Navigating the London Tube system can be a daunting experience, especially if you're a first-time visitor to the city. With so many stations and multiple lines, it can be challenging to figure out the best route to take and how much it will cost.

One essential piece of information that can help you plan your Tube journey is understanding fare zones. Each station in London is assigned a fare zone, ranging from zone 1 in central London to zone 9 on the outskirts of the city. The fare you pay for your journey will depend on the number of zones you travel through.

For example, if you're travelling from a station in zone 1 to a station in zone 3, you'll need to purchase a ticket or use your Oyster card that covers both zones 1 and 3. The same applies if you're travelling from a station in zone 4 to a station in zone 6, you'll need to purchase a ticket or use your Oyster card that covers zones 4 to 6.

It's important to note that the fare zones only apply to the London Underground and Docklands Light Railway (DLR) networks. If you're travelling on London Overground, TfL Rail, or National Rail services within London, the fare you pay will be based on different fare zones.

When planning your journey, it's essential to check the fare zones of your starting and ending stations to ensure you purchase the correct ticket or use your Oyster card. You can find information on fare zones at every Tube station, on the Transport for London (TfL) website, and in the official TfL app.

If you're a regular commuter or planning an extended stay in London, it may be worth investing in a travel card or season ticket. These options can save you money and make travelling around the city more convenient.

In conclusion, understanding fare zones is crucial when travelling on the London Tube system. By knowing the fare zones of your starting and ending stations, you can ensure you purchase the correct ticket or use your Oyster card, saving you time and money. So next time you're planning a Tube journey, make sure you check the fare zones beforehand.
