Hawai'i Cruise Details

Day-by-day details  for Molokai to Kona, Hawaii (*or reverse); variations may occur to maximize your experience.

Day 1 – Molokai, Hawaii* – Embark

Welcome to Hawaii! You’ll be transferred to our hospitality area on Molokai. Later, the Captain and crew greet you with smiles and champagne as you board the awaiting Safari Explorer. Settle in and enjoy dinner (the first included meal of the rip) aboard the yacht, before a presentation about your week ahead.

Day 2 – Molokai

A warm Aloha spirit gives you a sense of Hawaii long ago. No stop lights, no high-rises, just a welcome slower pace. “Talk story” with locals and experience their land and traditions as few visitors ever do. You’ll hear legends and lore, then take in a cultural lesson in taro patches and poi making, or hike to a towering waterfall in Halawa’s cathedral valley-one of the island’s most historic places. At the Molokai Museum, discover the history of this ancient homeland as you enjoy an evening paina (feast), complete with a home-style Hawaiian jam session.

Day 3 – Lanai

Gear up for a day of play on the “Private Island.” Thousand foot sea cliffs line the shore and ancient volcanic plugs sit both above and below the water’s surface as host to a wide diversity of marine life. Snorkel, paddle board, kayak, explore by skiff, or stretch your legs on hike-whichever activities suit your fancy. Take a stroll to ancient Hawaiian historic site. Learn about the islands plantation days and unique history.

Day 4 – Maui

Today we may snorkel among coral gardens teeming with underwater life and a known sea turtle habitat. The Humpback National Marine Sanctuary located between Lana’i, Molokai, and Maui provides front-row seats as you cruise through these productive breeding grounds searching for dolphins, whales, and other marine life. Look above and below the surface. Then stretch your legs in Lahaina for an afternoon amble through this historic town or take a leisurely beach stroll.

Day 5 – Captain’s Choice Exploration

Leave it to your Captain and crew to seek out and unveil the best opportunities the islands hold in store today. Dramatic volcanic backdrops, marine life sightings, and chances for snorkeling, kayaking, and paddle boarding are all possible!

Day 6 – Kona Coast

Fringed by coconut palms, Kealakekua (more commonly known as Captain Cook Bay, the fateful location of his unlucky demise) offers a morning filled with corals, sponges, and tropical fishes all set to the tune of the rich history of the Hawaiian Dynasty of Kings. From the tiniest fish to the widest stretch of coral, it’s all spectacular. Depending on weather and your mood, spend the day in the water or let us do the work, and explore the rugged coastline on a skiff ride.

Day 7 – Puu Waawaa State Wildlife Sanctuary

Active adventure guests are off to Puu Waawaa State Wildlife Sanctuary where you and a local naturalist climb the trails above the Kona coast. Head up Hualalai Volcano, then set out on a long hike up the cool and misty slopes, complete with natural history interpretation. Hike through dryland native forest and past lava tubes, and peer into a pit crater from its edge (if you’re up for it, you can even go inside a lava tube). A shorter option boasts views of craters, fissures, and lava tubes.

While more relaxed guests visit with a ranger (and become a Hawaii Junior Ranger if you choose), hike the trail to petroglyphs, or check out the Kaloko fishpond and remnants of the Aiopio fish trap. Bird watch or relax on the white coral sand beach—you may spot a green sea turtle.

For your final afternoon, relax onboard or go for one last dip. Celebrate with the Captain’s Dinner and a photographic recap of your adventure.

Day 8 – Hawaii, the Big Island – Disembark

As the Safari Explorer docks at Kawaihae Harbor, you’ll be transferred to the Kona Airport for your return flight home. Breakfast will be the last included meal of the trip.

*For trips departing from Hawaii, the Big Island to Molokai, the itinerary will be in reverse.

You can look forward to a delicious daily menu filled with meals designed to reflect the flavors of Hawaii including locally sourced ingredients when possible. For breakfast – you can choose from an early riser breakfast with fresh baked pastries and fruit or a full breakfast with hot, cold, and specialty dishes. For lunch – you will find a range of salads, sandwiches, and homemade soups. During happy hour – enjoy a cocktail and hors d’oeuvres in the lounge. Dinner – choose from several entrées including fresh, local seafood and meats or a vegetarian dish with a chef-selected wine pairing and be sure to leave room for an indulgent dessert, such as tiramisu.

Full Schedule

This expedition cruise consists of a flexible, fun, and full itinerary. Your days will be filled from the moment you wake until you retire to your cabin with chances for group meals, off-ship outings, and presentations in the evening. Choose to participate in the activities and presentations each day or sit them out, but one thing is for sure, this cruise will keep you moving!

The 137 volcanic islands that make up the Hawaiian archipelago stretch 1,500 miles across the North Pacific, with a tropical climate and a unique Polynesian culture that are quite distinct from the US mainland. Read on to discover the best small ship cruises to Hawaii.

With eight main islands to explore, a thriving tourist industry and excellent air links from the continental US, you would think that Hawaii would be the perfect destination for an island-hopping small ship cruise, and we know that there is plenty of demand out there. However, the truth is that cruises to Hawaii are pretty thin on the ground, and those ships that do visit the islands are almost always en route to somewhere else.

Kauai, Hawaii

In part this is due to the archipelago's remote location, but the main reason is a piece of US maritime legislation known as the Jones Act, and the related Passenger Vessel Services Act. This legislation (also known as the Cabotage Law) does not allow ships registered outside the US to embark and debark guests at the same US port unless they call at a foreign port during the itinerary, and furthermore does not allow ships to embark and debark at two different US ports unless they call at a 'distant foreign port' (ie. outside North/Central America and the Caribbean).

The vast majority of cruise ships are not registered in the US, which means that any cruise to Hawaii has to either begin or end in another country, or take a detour to somewhere like Mexico if it's a round-trip voyage from a US port. A cruise where you embark and debark in Hawaii itself is simply not practical for most cruise lines.

However, once you understand the limitations of what's possible, you do still have some very appealing options with some of our favourite small ship cruise lines. Here are our top five choices for a small ship cruise to Hawaii:

1. Seabourn

Seabourn have several interesting itineraries visiting Hawaii on their sleek 458-guest 'triplets' over the next few years. First up is Seabourn Odyssey, cruising out of Honolulu on 12 October 2022 and visiting islands including Kaua'i and Lanai before heading down to the South Pacific and the paradise islands of French Polynesia. In October 2023 Odyssey embarks on a longer voyage from Los Angeles, spending four days in Hawaii before continuing on to French Polynesia, the Cook Islands, Tonga and New Zealand. If you would prefer a round-trip voyage from the US then take a look at Seabourn Sojourn's 20-day sailing from Los Angeles over Christmas and New Year 2023/24, which includes New Year's Eve in Honolulu and a call in Mexico.

Sunset over Kailua-Kona, Hawaii

2. Viking Ocean Cruises

Viking's ocean ships are a lovely size at 930 guests, with a cool, Scandi style on board, a relaxed ambience and included excursions in almost every port. Viking Star's Christmas cruise in 2023 visits four Hawaiian islands, departing Los Angeles on 12 December on a 16-night voyage. The same itinerary is also available over the New Year, departing on 28 December 2023, or in February 2024 .

Rainbow Falls in Hilo, Hawaii

3. Oceania Cruises

Oceania's 684-guest Regatta is a regular visitor to the South Pacific, and stops off in Hawaii in the spring as she returns to North America after wintering in warmer climes. The 16 April 2023 voyage from Papeete to Los Angeles features three calls in Hawaii, including an overnight stay in Honolulu, while a similar voyage departing Papeete on 30 March 2024 includes four stops in Hawaii, again with an overnight in Honolulu.

Oceania's Marina in Rangiroa, French Polynesia

4. Hapag-Lloyd Cruises

German cruise line Hapag-Lloyd Cruises is a good choice for more unusual itineraries, and their 500-guest bilingual ship MS Europa 2 is consistently rated the best ship in the world. Embark in Lautoka on 23 March 2024 for a fantastic 19-night exploration of Fiji and Hawaii, visiting Kaua'i, Maui and Big Island, before ending your adventure in the wonderful city of San Francisco.

5. UnCruise Adventures

Last but not least, a rare exception to the rule is UnCruise Adventures, a small American cruise line that is able to operate voyages focusing solely on Hawaii without violating cabotage rules due to the fact that its ships are US-owned, staffed and flagged. The petite 36-guest Safari Explorer operates 7-night itineraries between Molokai and Kailua-Kona, visiting four different Hawaiian islands over the course of the week. Highlights include hiking up Hualalai volcano, enjoying an evening feast and jamming session with locals in Molokai, and searching for dolphins, whales and other sea life in the Humpback National Marine Sanctuary. Multiple departure dates are available between November and May every year.

Hawaii Small Ship Cruises

Outfitted in snorkeling gear, you’re ready for a little nightlife. Underwater “campfire” lights at the bottom of the ocean face up to attract plankton, which lures Giant Pacific Manta rays—the guys you’re here to party with. Just as you exchange anticipatory looks with your shipmates, a manta rises up from the dark, feeding a few feet away. Come daylight, you’ll snorkel, kayak, paddleboard, or sail past green sea turtles, pink tail triggerfish, “gentle giant” whale sharks, or spinner dolphins leaping alongside the bow. A marine sanctuary like no other.

It’s true that the island vibe wafts across Molokai, Hawai‘i, Lana‘i, and Maui like the sweet fragrance of plumeria. But these scents and sights are more than paradise; they’re part of tradition and culture for Native Hawaiians. The same plumeria is turned into your welcome lei. The taro plant—grown in patches beneath heart-shaped leaves—pounded into poi. You learn all about this ancient tradition as you “talk story” with the locals. It’s just Hawaii’s way of saying ‘aloha’—which is basically love. All year long!

Top Hawaii FAQs

What is the best time of year to take a cruise to Hawaii?

The best time of year to visit Hawaii is from March to September, when you can expect warm temperatures and less rain. Hawaii is, however, a year-round destination, with great snorkeling, hiking, and beach life at any time of year.

How long does a typical cruise last?

Our Hawaiian cruises last from nine to 13 nights, sailing between Vancouver and Honolulu. You could also choose a transpacific cruise, starting or ending in Honolulu. These longer voyages range from 16 to 19 nights.

What are the main ports of call?

The main ports of call in Hawaii are Honolulu, from where our cruises start or finish, and Hilo and Kona, both on the Big Island. On some itineraries, you’ll also enjoy scenic cruising along the Napali Coast on Kauai, a sacred landscape of emerald cliffs, pristine beaches, and jagged mountain ridges. Some cruises also visit Astoria in Oregon before the Pacific crossing to Hawaii.

What should I pack?

Hawaii is a tropical destination with year-round warm weather and high humidity. Pack for beach days, and if you’re an active kind of traveler, hikes and adventures. Swimwear, sunblock, coverups, beach shoes, a sun hat, and proper footwear for hiking should all be on your list.

Throughout the ship, casual resort wear, sundresses, shorts, polos, or button-downs are appropriate, paired with sandals, low heels, and loafers. In main and specialty dining, we ask guests to refrain from wearing swimsuits, see-through coverups or robes, bare feet, tank tops, T-shirts, and baseball caps.

Smart Casual attire is required for entry to main dining, specialty dining, and the Celebrity Theatre. Smart Casual means you look comfortable yet tasteful in a dress, skirt, long pants, or jeans with a stylish top or button-down. Shorts and flip-flops are not considered Smart Casual.

Each itinerary features one to two more “formal” nights that we call Evening Chic. Evening Chic means you dress to impress, glamorous and sophisticated in your own way, with a cocktail dress, skirt, slacks, or designer jeans, an elegant dress top, or blazer—some guests even pack a tuxedo or gown for onboard photos.

The daily program, delivered to your stateroom and available at the Guest Relations Desk, will be your guide to the correct attire each evening. If you do not wish to participate in Evening Chic, Smart Casual attire is acceptable for dining and attending the theatre.

Can I fly to Hawaii and then cruise the islands?

Our cruises to Hawaii operate one-way either to or from Honolulu and Vancouver (or Sydney, Australia in terms of transpacific voyages). So yes, if you pick a Honolulu to Vancouver departure, you can easily fly to Hawaii and spend a few days exploring before embarking on your Celebrity ship.

Do I need a passport?

For Hawaii cruises that either begin or end in Vancouver, Canadian law requires that all persons entering Canada carry proof of citizenship and identity. A valid U.S. passport, passport card, or NEXUS card satisfies these requirements for U.S. citizens.

If you have chosen to visit Hawaii as part of a transpacific cruise, you’ll also need a passport.

Non-U.S. citizens also require a passport for entry into both the U.S. and Canada (and the countries visited on our transpacific cruises). It is your responsibility to check your government’s website for the latest information about entry and visa requirements.

What kind of activities and excursions are available?

Hawaii offers a wonderful range of activities and experiences. From Kona, join a snorkel or submarine tour to admire the spectacular underwater world. Meet local producers and try island-made coffee and chocolate, or explore the lush interior of the Big Island in a 4x4, stopping to cool off under tumbling waterfalls.

Historic Hilo is also famous as the gateway to magnificent falls and verdant rainforest. Admire the dramatic lava landscapes of the Volcanoes National Park shaped by the still-active Kilauea and Mauna Loa volcanoes. In Honolulu, make time to visit Pearl Harbor, or stroll along the iconic Waikiki Beach.

Off-Beat Small-Ship Hawaii Cruise with UnCruise Adventures Reveals the Real Hawaii

Small-Ship Hawaii Cruise with UnCruise

By Judi Cohen

Never thrilled about the idea of traveling thousands of miles just to sit on a beach sipping a colourful drink, Hawaii was not very high on my list of destinations.

Until my husband and I spent a week with UnCruise Adventures on their “Hawaiian Seascapes Cruise” from Kona to Molokai.

I quickly realized how wrong I had been! A small-ship Hawaii cruise was the way to go.

Having had the pleasure of recently cruising with UnCruise in Alaska’s Glacier Bay, I knew this small-ship cruise would have loads of active adventures, plenty of local homemade meals, and a cozy quiet cabin to return to at night.

Aboard the 145-foot, 36-passenger Safari Explorer, I am thrilled to have finally experienced the “real” Hawaii. We visited four Hawaiian islands — the Big Island of Hawaii, Lana’i, Maui and Molokai — along with 33 other quirky and adventurous passengers ranging in age from 49 to well over 80.

With a 2:1 guest ratio, the level of personal attention on this small-ship Hawaii cruise couldn’t have been better, catering to our every need.

Welcomed on board by Dai Mar, a marine biologist and also our expedition leader, we were introduced immediately to the expedition team and crew. And thus the tone was set for the next week of adventure-packed fun.

Our Small-ship Hawaii Cruise Itinerary

We cruised a total of 250 nautical miles while visiting four islands — Hawai’i, Maui, Lana’i and Molokai  — about half the distance we covered in the Glacier Bay Alaska itinerary I did recently.

UnCruise is the only cruise line that sails across the often-rough Alenuihaha Channel between the Big Island of Hawaii and Maui, which makes this itinerary that much more special.

And it makes the route particularly suited for people like me who want to see more than just big tourist beach hubs like on the island of Oahu’s Honolulu.

Daily Routine Aboard Safari Explorer In Hawaii

At 6:30 am there was an early-risers breakfast in the lounge area and regular breakfast started at 7:30 am the dining room.

There typically was a morning excursion, followed by lunch around 12:30 pm, and then an afternoon excursion; there were no sea days.

Excursion options on our small-ship Hawaii cruise included hiking, snorkeling, kayaking, cultural visits and skiff adventure tours to nature reserves whale watching.

Our small-ship Hawaii cruise with UnCruise was a great balance of extreme and easy activities; something for everyone.

All excursions are included in the cruise fares, and sign-ups were offered the night before after dinner. There was always a challenging excursion as well as a less demanding excursion to choose from; or of course, you could choose to stay on board and have your own private yacht experience!

Cocktails were served in the bar or on the top deck while we talked about our adventures and wildlife sightings.

Dinner was at 6:30 pm followed by a presentation or guest speaker.

We retired to our cabin around 10:00pm each evening exhausted from each day’s activities.

Our Cozy Cabin Aboard Safari Explorer

Our cozy Navigator category cabin B13 on the Cabin Deck was configured with one queen bed.

There was no lock on the door and we happily slept with our door open every night to hear the ocean.

We kept our valuables including our passports in the small room safe.

We packed very light, knowing that our cabin space would be limited. Almost everything fit neatly into the closet or drawers, and on hooks around the cabin.

Our suitcases, however, were left out in the corner of the cabin as there was no room to stow them under the bed. UnCruise did suggest bringing soft bags and we will do so in the future.

A separate en-suite bathroom with toilet and shower (with refillable eco-friendly body wash, shampoo and conditioner) was bright and clean.

Over the desk, a small TV screen displayed the itinerary and one channel looped documentaries that changed daily to reflect our itinerary.

It was very handy to have binoculars and metal water bottles provided in our cabins.

Public Areas On Safari Explorer

We spent most of our time on the Main Deck, where the dining room, saloon, bar and library are in one contiguous comfortable space, ideal for mixing and mingling, sipping drinks and exchanging stories.

The bar was very handy and special drinks were offered daily.

In fact, I felt like I was at a friend’s cottage with comfy oversized sofas.

Guests made themselves at home on the sofas curled up, sleeping or reading, just like a sleepover party when we were kids.

During the cruise we referred to the books in the library to look up wildlife and read about adventure travel around the world.

VIDEO: Judi shows us around the Main Deck public areas, below.

Safari Explorer’s Main Deck — The Adventure Base

Located on the Main Deck aft, was the launch area where the heart of a water-based adventure with UnCruise shines brightest.

The hub for our off-ship adventures, the launch platform had a swim step and was the access point for the Zodiacs (rigid-hulled inflatable boats), skiffs, stand-up paddle boards, kayaks, and snorkeling gear including wetsuits.

A wall of white lockers, one for each cabin, was where we stored our sanitized snorkels, fins and wetsuits between excursions.

Reef-safe suntan lotion was available and we were reminded to keep applying it to avoid sunburn.

I’m also glad to have brought a rash guard long-sleeve shirt to wear during snorkeling.

Ideal for relaxing in the shade, or sunbathing on the loungers, the Bridge Deck also had an outdoor workout area with teak boxes full of bands and yoga mats.

A small spinner for drying bathing suits was very convenient after each water activity.

Cocktails were often served on this spacious outdoor deck at sunset before heading down to the dining room.

Food Glorious Food On Safari Explorer

Menus creatively incorporated local fruit, vegetables and seafood.

The early-riser breakfast had an assortment of fruit, yogurt, fresh-baked muffins and danishes, and the regular breakfast featured a daily special such as eggs Benedict or waffles, along with custom orders of eggs, potatoes, baked goods and meats.

Meals were always open seating and guests moved around to meet one another.

We made new friends and dined most evenings with a couple from Hawaii, Julie and John, who did this very same itinerary on the Safari Explorer three times previously.

They gave us great insider information about the islands, the traditions and the food. We were fascinated by their story about losing everything when a volcano spewed molten lava and covered their homes. Julie told us she is just grateful to have survived!

Lists were posted at breakfast with the lunch and dinner choices.

The highlight of each meal for me, as a lover of sweets and baked goods, were the desserts and breads.

Our pastry chef, Cati, simply knocked it out of the park every single day. She was on my previous UnCruise in Alaska and to this day I recall her delicious macarons and Nanaimo bars! I was thrilled to meet her again on this sailing.

Pre-cruise Hotel

My husband and I flew from Toronto on an Air Canada flight direct to Honolulu on the island O’ahu.

We stayed a night in the Western Plaza Hotel near the airport; the hotel shuttled us from the airport to the hotel and then back to the airport for our flight to Kona the next day.

Day-by-Day Highlights of an UnCruise Small-Ship Hawaii Cruise

Day 1: big island of hawaii — boarding at the kailua kona pier.

We flew from Honolulu to Kona, and transferred to a hotel where UnCruise had a hospitality suite.

We walked along Ali’i Drive ,  the coastal road with shops selling expensive coffee and every colour of Hawaiian shirts.

Returning to the hospitality suite at 4:00pm, we walked to the Safari Explorer , and were greeted with a warm “aloha” and “mahalo” by Dai Mar, our expedition leader.

Immediately following the safety briefing we went out to the bow, champagne glasses in hand, to set sail and enjoy our first dinner.

Bow-riding dolphins led us off into our first beautiful Hawaiian sunset.

Day 2: Big Island Of Hawaii — The Kona Coast

We woke up early to be ready for our snorkel tour in Kealakekua Bay (also known as Captain Cook Bay ).

We left the ship by Zodiac and then transferred to a faster Zodiac to reach the perfect snorkeling site with shallow clear water where we saw corals, sea stars, pufferfish, trumpetfish and brightly coloured parrotfish.

Snorkeling in Capt Cook Bay.

Next up was an hour-long Zodiac safari in search of whales and other wildlife.

We saw the ocean “boiling” with fish, as our guide described it, as we approached a large floating metal ball. Called a “fish aggregating device” or FAD , it was fastened to the ocean floor over 5,000 feet down, by the State of Hawaii to make it easier for fishermen to find fish.

The coastline was beautiful and the safari was invigorating as we saw several pelagic (sea) bird species like wedge-tailed shearwaters and brown boobies, though unfortunately we did not see whales.

Day 3: Big Island of Hawaii — Sea Turtles, Volcano Hikes & the Notorious Alenuihaha Channel

With a quick ride on the skiff we landed in the pristine waters of the Kaloka-Honokohau National Historical Park , greeted by Pacific golden plover and black crowned night herons.

As we walked on the rocks through the shallow waters, we spotted large green sea turtles sunning themselves on the flat rocks.

The clear turquoise water glistened as we returned to the ship.

Some of the points we passed looked like they could have been scenes from Gilligan’s Island!

Meanwhile, the rest of the group headed 5,000 feet up the slope of Hualalai Volcano for a big hike through native Hawaiian forest experiencing a side of Hawaii that few get to see.

The hike is completely on private land, handed down and protected from the Hawaiian royalty, and is home to species of very rare Hawaiian honeycreepers.

Lunch was served on board and we waited for the guests to return who were on an extreme hike up a volcano.

In the mid-afternoon we gathered on the bow for whale watching. At sunset, cocktails including a daily signature drink were served on the rooftop.

In the evenings after dinner Dai Mar, our cruise director and marine animal expert, arranged for speakers on interesting topics.

This night, he presented Tips and Tricks for iPhone photography.

We all had our phones out trying each trick, just like a classroom of curious children. Crowing about our new skills to one another — like opening the camera instantly from the home screen without logging in — the bar was still hopping when I went to bed just after 10:30 pm.

Overnight we began crossing the Alenuihaha Channel, notorious for its rough waters, although Dai Mar said the forecast was favourable.

We were told that in preparation for the crossing they would batten down everything on the ship. The skiffs were brought onto the stern deck using a crane, and all furniture was pulled in.

We were asked not to use the outside steps and instructed to fasten everything down in our cabins. The crew recommended an anti-nausea drug with dinner to prevent seasickness.

I was fine; however, my husband and others were quite seasick overnight.

Day 4: Maui — The Rugged Southeast Coast In Pursuit Of More Whales

In the morning, things were calm again. Some guests did a kayak tour paddling along the rugged Maui coast in the Puu Waa Waa State Wildlife Sanctuary, at Pu’u Olai.

I did the same route on a skiff tour looking for whales as well.

Accompanying us on this skiff tour was our expedition guide, Annie, whose passion for whales was palpable and totally infectious.

When we saw some whale spouts, Annie giddily burst out with poetry that went something like this:

If you see a spout shout it out; If you see a tail, whale; If you see a blow, let me know; If you see a flipper tell the skipper; If you see a fluke don’t puke; and If you see a breach holler and screech.

I sure hope Annie writes a children’s book about whales!

We had time for a wild and wonderful mid-morning free swim as well as kayaking, going out on stand-up paddle boards, and showing off with high dives off the Cabin Deck dive platform.

The deep water was quite calm and very warm.

In the afternoon we cruised around the Maui’s Molokini Crater, the abandoned island used by the US Navy in World War II for target practice and then to detonate unexploded munitions inside the crater.

While cruising we saw humpback whales with their babies, as well as a whale shark, not commonly seen in these waters.

VIDEO: See a mother and baby whale breaching together, below.

We cruised around the peaceful Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary in search of whales and other wildlife.

And it was wonderful to hear what whales sound like when they communicate under the water. Annie had a listening device she shared with us.

Listen below!

It is quite extraordinary to be on a ship whose captain will spontaneously turn the ship if wildlife is spotted and the ship will stay in place so that all guests have had viewing time.

Day 5:  The Island Of Lana’i

We got up extra early for a snorkel off the rugged west side of Lana’i at a spot called Shark Fin Rock .

The water was crystal clear and we could see about eight feet down to the sandy bottom surrounding a rocky pinnacle, shaped like a shark fin.

Huge schools of yellow butterflyfish hovered near the pinnacle. The water was quite rough with strong currents.

We saw large sea turtles swimming and bumping into us as they came to the surface for air, as well as plenty of colourful corals and yellow, turquoise and striped fish.

The rough waters during snorkeling caused Lawrence and some others to get seasick and to return to the skiffs.

Returning from snorkeling in Lana'i.

Back on board, we had brunch.

Afterwards, we went to Manele Bay, a small boat harbour, to shuttle ashore for a van guided tour of the island.

I was thrilled to visit the Lanai Cat Sanctuary . They rescue cats from protected areas where native and endangered ground-nesting birds such as the ‘Ua’u, the Hawaiian Petrel live. Cats are also rescued from Lanai City, and brought to the sanctuary.

There were 650 resident cats when we visited. Each cat has a name.

Next we were taken to Lana’i’s Shipwreck Beach overlook on the north side of the island with a panoramic view, and then we had free time to explore Lana’i City, which was the centre of the Dole Plantation and now a thriving artisan community.

Larry Ellison the founder of Oracle owns 98% of the island, hence its name, the Private Island.

Day 6:  Maui — It’s All About The Whales

Back to Maui, the ship anchored off Lahaina and we got up at the crack of dawn for a sunrise whale-watching skiff tour.

We saw many humpback whale moms and babies.

The tranquility and views of the shore were breathtaking. We left before 6:00 am and were back in time for breakfast.

Then we all went on a guided snorkelling adventure at Mala Wharf with many giant sea turtles and a sea turtle cleaning station.

Following lunch, we enjoyed free time exploring the old whaling town of Lahaina in the afternoon, sampling some shave-ice browsing in the small souvenir and clothing shops, and watching all the small boats in the harbour.

Day 7:  Molokai — The Halawa Valley Rainforest

Of all the islands we visited, Molokai was my favourite.

Molokai is the birthplace of hula and many other Hawaiian traditional practices.

Beautiful Molokai.

Beautiful Molokai. * Photo: UnCruise

The highlight was arriving, after a one-hour drive on a winding coastal road with steep cliffs, at the sacred Halawa Valley Rainforest , one of the oldest inhabited locations in Hawaii.

We walked to the home of Pilipo Solatorio, who lives off-the-grid with his roosters, goats and dogs roaming freely into his home. He is the last of his generation living in the isolated valley.

Pilipo is the oldest living person in the Halawa Valley who was born and raised there. One of his sons, Greg, was by his father’s side sharing stories about their lives and culture.

( Update: We are sad to learn that dear Pilipo passed away in June 2024. )

He demonstrated how traditional poi was made from taro. The starchy staple is definitely an acquired taste, quite sweet, with a gooey texture.

Some guests went for a hike to the towering Mo’o Ula waterfall in Halawa Cathedral Valley.

As if this day wasn’t enriching enough, in the evening we went to the Molokai Museum for a pa’ina, a Hawaiian feast, overflowing with local delicacies.

I was “voluntold” to be part of a homestyle Hawaiian jam session, which was embarrassing for me but entertaining for everyone else!

We returned to the ship and were greeted by a lovely rainbow, below.

VIDEO: Below, Judi shows us the rainbow.

Our our last evening we were treated to a slideshow of our cruise highlights, put together by the staff, in the lounge.

Day 8: Disembarkation in Molokai

The crew in their Hawaiian attire were out on the ship deck and on the dock smiling and waving as we left our fabulous floating home for the last seven nights.

Next, we transferred to the Molokai Hotel to enjoy the pool and beach until our scheduled transfers to the airport.

Post Cruise Travels

After the cruise ended, we flew on Molokini Airlines from Molokai to Honolulu arriving at remote Terminal 3 at the Daniel K. Inouye International Airport, formerly know as the Honolulu International Airport (HNL).

I arranged for a driver with Blacklane limousines, who I rely on all over the world for transfers, to pick us up and take us to the recently renovated Outrigger Reef Waikiki Beach resort for a two-night stay.

Outrigger Reef Waikiki Resort

Our room was stylish and bright with a balcony and ocean view, a King size bed and a nice desk and seating area. It has a nice pool and beachfront and is centrally located near Beach Walk, a shopping and dining area.

I walked over to see the Waikiki Beachcomber Hotel by Outrigger which I had heard a lot about, and for good reason. I had Kona coffee in the Aroma restaurant adjacent to the pool on the second floor. This hotel has a young, hip vibe great for people watching.

They were preparing for an Earth Day art exhibit throughout the hotel focussed on sustainability and plastics in the oceans.

After just two nights, we headed home on a direct flight to Toronto with Air Canada .

I could have easily spent more time in Hawaii adventuring off-the-beaten-path with UnCruise.

After hearing so much about other guests’ multiple cruises with UnCruise in Baha, Costa Rica, Panama, Alaska and the Galapagos, it’ll be hard to choose which one to do next.

Tips For Small-Ship Hawaii Cruises with UnCruise

  • Pack light. Bring a bathing suit, a couple of athletic shirts, shorts, pants, sweatshirt, hat with strings, sunglasses with a strap, water shoes, deck shoes and a sturdy pair of hiking shoes.
  • Everything is casual; you can even come to meals in shorts and bare feet if you like.
  • Ample reef-safe suntan lotion and bug spray is provided on board. No need to bring your own.
  • For swimming and snorkeling I recommend bringing a rash guard long sleeve top to avoid sunburn.
  • A very cool old school bathing suit spinner on the top deck dries your bathing suit in just seconds. Take advantage of it while on board.
  • Be sure to advise UnCruise if you have any food allergies or preferences. The chef adjusts meal ingredients accordingly.
  • If you’re prone to sea sickness, definitely bring along sea bands and medication (my husband wore a digital relief band he found online that worked well for him; they were invented for women suffering from nausea associated with morning sickness!); the rough seas on this itinerary are a challenge for some (but not for me!). I’d estimate the seas were rough about 20% of the time, mostly at night.

We did this trip in 2014, one of 6 trips on Un-Cruise. On our last night in Molokai it happened to be Valentine Day and our 35th wedding anniversary. We asked if we could just stay on board for dinner and skip the pa’ina. Our favorite wait staff person set up a romantic upper deck dinner for us. I am a big fan, UCA really gives guests a great experience.

These 8 Cruises Make It Easy to Explore Hawaii on Your Next Vacation

Here are our picks for some of the best Hawaii cruises.

hawaiian islands small ship cruises

The islands of Hawaii are popular with families, couples, retirees, groups of friends, and really anyone who enjoys warm weather, tropical scenery, and the Aloha spirit of the 50th state. Each island offers a different climate, attractions, environment, and style, and even on the same island, there are major variations depending on location. On Oahu, for example, there's bustling Honolulu on the south shore and the more secluded surfing paradise of the North Shore . On the Big Island, the Hilo and Puna regions on the east coast are wet and heavily forested, whereas the Kona region, on the west coast, tends to be much drier.

Visitors to Hawaii, especially first-timers, will want to experience as much of the islands as possible, and a cruise is one way to accomplish that. You can embark from any of several ports on the West Coast (or within Hawaii itself), and the convenience of not worrying about hotel changes or local transportation is a plus. Below are some of the best cruises to see Hawaii . Dates, prices, amenities, and itineraries vary, so picking a cruise requires some planning and research. That's always part of the fun, and we hope this list will inspire you to get started.

Small Ship Cruises in Hawaii

Breathtaking scenery and nature, both on land and in the water - Hawaii is truly unforgettable.

Hawaii is an island state in the Western United States, located in the Pacific Ocean about 3,000 kilometres (2,000 mi) from the U.S. mainland. It is made up of 137 volcanic islands spanning 2,400 kilometres (1,500 mi). The eight main islands are Niʻihau, Kauaʻi, Oʻahu, Molokaʻi, Lānaʻi, Kahoʻolawe, Maui, and Hawaiʻi, after which the state is named; it is often called the "Big Island" or "Hawaii Island" to avoid confusion with the state or archipelago. The uninhabited Northwestern Hawaiian Islands make up most of the Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument, the United States’ largest protected area and the third-largest in the world.

Small ship cruises in Hawaii offer travellers an unmatched way to experience the beauty of these Pacific islands. These intimate voyages provide passengers with a front-row seat to the natural wonders of the islands, as well as the opportunity to explore remote areas that are inaccessible by larger cruise ships.

Best Hawaii cruises and areas to visit

Hawaii, also known as “ the Big Island ”, is the largest island in America's Hawaiian archipelago and home to 2 active volcanoes - Kilauea & Mauna Loa. The Big Island has some amazing snorkelling sites, such as Hapuna Beach with its beautiful colored sand beaches; lush rainforests are waiting for exploration just outside Volcanos National Park, where you can find many tropical plants and animals. The earthy black sand at Punalu'u Beach is breathtaking with its vivid colour, while green sand decorates the Papakolea shoreline. Within Volcanoes National Park, there are also 2 other noteworthy landmarks: Hapuna Beach, which has seen some major development recently with hotels built around its scenic coastlines; Kahalau'U beach park offers excellent snorkelling opportunities offshore from where guests can see turtles swimming underwater.

The sunny Kona District is a stretch of land on the West side, where you’ll find everything from coffee farms to historic Hawaiian landmarks. Maunaloa shields south Kona’s clear waters from the wind, making them ideal for snorkelling, diving, sailing and spotting dolphins and Hawaiian green sea turtles, locally known as Honu. One of Kona’s most memorable experiences is going on a manta ray boat tour, scuba diving, or snorkelling with these gentle and graceful sea creatures.

Maui is the second most popular island in the Hawaiian archipelago, and it is for good reason that it is a National Park. You can enjoy 30 miles of golden beaches with crescent-shaped Kapalua as well as towering peaks like Hana Highway that provide visitors with incredible views. One such beach that stretches for miles along Haleakala National Park's south-facing coastline is Ohe’o Gulch pools, with their waterfalls tumbling down lush green cliffs into clear blue ocean waters below.

O’ahu

O’ahu is the third-largest Hawaiian island and home to a diverse population. From the bustling city life of Honolulu, or laidback surf towns like Makaha Ali’i on Oahu's North Shore. There’s something for everyone when visiting O'ahu whether it is a tour near Waikiki Beach, which offers stunning views overlooking the ocean, or visiting attractions such as the Diamond Head volcanic cone. The island has three major seasons: lush green hills in the summertime when they’re covered by groves; warm golden days that bring on fall colors like reds or oranges depending on where you are located across this diverse region known as "Theillelo"; then finally, cool frosty conditions at winter's end which make it perfect timing before the next long hot season begins.

Kauai is Hawaii's fourth-largest island, also known as "the Garden Isle" thanks to the tropical rainforest covering much of its surface. The landscape is breathtaking, with emerald valleys, sharp mountain spires and jagged cliffs surrounded by tropical rainforests, forking rivers and cascading waterfalls, some of which are only accessible by air or sea. The cliffs and pinnacles of its Na Pali Coast have been the backdrop for major Hollywood films, while 10-mile-long Waimea Canyon and the Nounou Trails traversing the Sleeping Giant mountain ridge are great hiking destinations. Popular tourist activities include kayaking the Wailua River, snorkeling on Poipu Beach, hiking the trails of Kokee State Park, or ziplining above Kauai's lush valleys.

Molokai is the fifth-largest island in the Hawaii archipelago, only 61 kilometers (38 mi) long and 16 kilometers (10 mi) across at its widest point. Home to the highest sea cliffs in the world as well as an incredible strip reef that extends for over 30 kilometers (19 mi), this remote destination offers visitors both outdoor adventures like exploring Kalaupapa National Historical Park or taking one of many guided tours along scenic roads winding through secluded valleys between mountainsides covered by lush tropical jungle forests--but also allows them to spend time on beaches filled with white sand dunes overlooked annually during side water conditions because they're so large.

Lana’i

Lana'i is the smallest inhabited island in Hawaii, just 14.5 kilometres (9 mi) from Maui. The island has luxurious resorts but also rugged back roads fit only for 4-wheel-drive vehicles. Long Polihua Beach has scenic views of nearby islands as well as an offshore wreck that's home to some interesting marine life, including green turtles. There are hiking trails through lush tropical jungle landscapes filled with fields of flowers. On the northern side of the island, Shipwreck Beach attracts sun lovers and fossil collectors who come to explore its offshore wreck of a WWII tanker. It also offers views into Molokai and Maui islands from sea level while green turtles swim nearby or humpback whales appear near shore during their annual migration route through Pacific waters.

An AdventureSmith expert shares his experience on the 8-day Hawaiian Seascapes cruise aboard the 36-guest Safari Explorer.

As I drift off to sleep I begin to dream of the amazing experiences that I couldn't even have imagined only seven days ago. I dream of diving with manta rays, of Pele, the goddess of fire, of paddle boarding at Shark's Fin Cove and swimming in the cool water under the cascading falls of Moâ'oula.

What’s the first question a newly-married couple gets? “Where did you guys go on your Honeymoon?” We are outdoorsy and adventurous. We enjoy hiking and getting out there, we want to experience things that others could only read about. We didn't want to completely rough it on our honeymoon but we also didn't want the resort or the 2,000 person cruise ship.

What Travelers Say About Their Hawaii Trip

We've always wanted to see Hawaii but didn't want resorts or large cruise ships. This trip was very active, yet relaxed and intimate -- perfect for us.

The trip leaders were all excellent. Friendly, accommodating, helpful, fun. No request was ever too much, unless it was unsafe.

The guides were always enthusiastic, considerate of all passengers' abilities and extremely knowledgeable. The entrees were always fresh and locally sourced. Thank you Arielle for your help and quick response to questions.

We wanted to experience the different islands of Hawaii, and we love water adventures, so this was a perfect fit!

We loved the luxury of the cruise, combined with the various active adventures. Perfect!

This was an ideal trip -- so many fun activities in a beautiful variety of Hawaiian locations, and yet without crowds and hustle-bustle. We loved the snorkeling and whale watching most. Both gave us a sense of awe at nature's variety and beauty, and the small groups with expert guides provided a rare atmosphere of intimacy. Everyone in our group of 25 was good-natured and enthusiastic. The night snorkel with manta rays was a disappointment because only one ray appeared that evening, but there were dozens of unruly tourists.

This trip was a blissful contrast to the "touristy" experience one often finds elsewhere in Hawaii. We've always wanted to see Hawaii but didn't want resorts or large cruise ships.  This trip was very active, yet relaxed and intimate -- perfect for us.

Accommodations Review

The ship was comfortable and welcoming.  Our cabin, while not large, had plenty of storage and was well appointed.

Meals Review

We thought the food was superb.  Both the chef and pastry chef offered a wonderful variety of delights at every meal, and we were always given choices.  The service was always capable and gracious

Crew & Guides Review

Our leaders (Jill Q. and Jill B) couldn't have been better.  They were highly knowledgeable, obviously loved nature and Hawaii, always positive and helpful -- they had that elusive balance of energy and even temper.  They went out of their way to give us a beautiful experience!

AdventureSmith Explorations Review

The information provided and Aaron's helpfulness were great.

Traveler Advice

Try to plan some time in Hawaii before and after the cruise.  The "before" allowed us to explore another part of the islands -- and gave the airline time to get our luggage to us two days late!  The "after" gives a chance to transition from the relaxation of the cruise to the hassle of the flight home.

This is a well tuned adventure. The staff are very experienced with the itinerary, the excursions and activities, the ship, and seemed to really enjoy working with each other. The itinerary is busy if you participate in everything, but allows opting out choices for people who want to relax. The route is a slow pace, and flexible to allow for sudden changes in weather or whale sightings. The weather was perfect, and we got up close and personal with whales, dolphins, green sea turtles and many fish while snorkeling. We also got insights into life in the less visited islands of Lana'i and Moloka'i.

The rooms are pleasant, simple and functional. There was plenty of hot and fresh water. The beds are very comfortable.

The food was excellent - local, varied, and very flexible. The pastry chef was even more amazing. For this particular chef, he seemed to love garlic and salt. I would recommend easing up on both.

It's a fabulous adventure.

Beyond excellent in all ways! Snorkeling every day in a wide diversity of settings was our favorite activity. We also felt that all the excursions were planned so that you were fully immersed in the Hawaiian culture and experience.

Our ship quarters were compact but had ample storage even for over-packers like us.

The entrees were always fresh and locally sourced. Portion size was not overwhelming which I appreciated. You were always able to modify a dish or even request salads or oatmeal. Desserts were amazing, quality over quantity. Great specialty drinks and appetizers.

The guides were always enthusiastic, considerate of all passengers' abilities and extremely knowledgeable.

Thank you Arielle for your help and quick response to questions.

This trip exceeded our expectations! We wanted to experience the different islands of Hawaii, and we love water adventures, so this was a perfect fit! We enjoyed all the water activities the most...mostly because that’s what we enjoy, and they were worth the effort. We saw lots of great fish, coral and other wildlife. We loved the whales, they put on quite a show! The group seemed to connect fairly quickly. Some great new friends!

The room on Safari Explorer was very nice. Bed was very comfortable!

All the meals were excellent!

We had everything we needed, and everything was well prepared for our travel and reservation.

The entire crew was amazing. They got to know us within minutes of our first encounter, and always seemed to have a genuine concern for us. Jessica and Lauren were amazing. Both we well informed and found the best opportunities for us in every situation. Always very concerned and watching out for our safety. Both had a great sense of humor, Lauren tells some pretty good jokes! Jessica was always very positive and optimistic, and authentically sincere! They were an absolute delight! I don’t remember the name of the boat driver in Kona, he drove the Black Pearl. He was very informative and a lot of fun.

Simply fantastic. We loved the luxury of the cruise, combined with the various active adventures. Perfect!

We had wanted to see Hawaii, but are not overly enthusiastic about crowds and commercialism. We wanted to see multiple islands, but did not know which ones to pick. This cruise was perfect, since they took us to 4 different islands and arranged lots of great activities. It was especially great because everything (including the alcohol) was included in one price.

Amazingly good food!

Maria and Jess did great jobs as our expedition leader/guide. We thoroughly enjoyed the activities and their enthusiasm.

We appreciated the advance information. And my questions were promptly and accurately answered.

There was one hike that was a bit grueling for me, but they were up front about it at the beginning. In spite of that, it was good to be out in the forest in Hawaii and see some things we don't see at home.

The 8 best Hawaii cruises in 2024 and 2025

C ruising the Hawaiian Islands offers U.S. travelers an immersive South Pacific escape with all the comforts of home. In fact, the Aloha State is in many ways an ideal cruise destination. It has year-round sunny weather, four main islands featuring varied topographies — including sandy beaches, cascading waterfalls, volcanic mountains and vibrant green valleys — and a wide array of land- and water-based activities.

The main caveat? Hawaii cruise options are somewhat limited — just a fraction of what's available in the Caribbean — and many itineraries involve multiday crossings from the West Coast. Only one cruise line offers Hawaii itineraries throughout the year; most others visit during specific months or when repositioning ships in spring and fall.

For more cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Looking for the Hawaiian Islands sailing that's right for you? Here's a look at the eight best Hawaii cruises for every type of traveler.

Norwegian Cruise Line's 7-night Inter-island Hawaii

For travelers who want more aloha time than the typical eight-hour port call allows, Norwegian Cruise Line has a solution. Its 2,186-passenger Pride of America lets vacationers sample four Hawaiian islands over seven days, with overnights in Maui and Kauai, plus port calls on both Hilo and Kona on the island of Hawaii. In total, this itinerary offers nearly 100 hours of shore time.

Pride of America sails round-trip from Honolulu every Saturday year-round. As a U.S.-flagged ship, it's the only large vessel permitted to sail this way. Not only do you skip the long Pacific crossing that most cruise ships do to reach Hawaii, but passports are not required for U.S. citizens, and you can tack on pre- or post-cruise stays on Oahu.

The overnights on Maui and Kauai also mean it's possible to try several of Hawaii's signature experiences that most port calls don't allow. Passengers can catch dusk or dawn from atop Maui's massive 10,023-foot dormant volcano with sunrise and sunset excursions to the Haleakala Crater. And with the ship in port all night on Kauai, guests who want to enjoy traditional Hawaiian cuisine, music and hula performances can book the Luau Kalamaku for a fun evening out.

Pride of America, which has been cruising Hawaii since 2005, doesn't have the onboard thrills (race track, virtual-reality gaming, waterslides) of Norwegian's newer ships , but that's okay because the islands, not the ship, are your main destination. Its American-themed decor celebrates U.S. cities in a vibrant, and at times, kitschy way, but a 2021 refurbishment left its cabins and public spaces feeling refreshed.

Many of Norwegian's specialty dining venues (which incur a surcharge) are on board, including Cagney's Steakhouse, Le Bistro (here, it's Jefferson's Bistro), Moderno Churrascaria and Teppanyaki.

Who should go: Anyone seeking a convenient way to island-hop — and see a lot of Hawaii — by making the most of the generous shore time with a combination of independent exploration and shore excursions. Most sailings attract couples ages 50 and older, although summer and holiday sailings have plenty of families on board.

UnCruise Adventures' 7-night Hawaiian Seascapes

Cruisers seeking a less traditional, more carefree Hawaii experience can have it from November to April aboard UnCruise Adventures ' 36-passenger Safari Explorer. The seven-night Hawaiian Seascapes itinerary, which begins either on Molokai or the island of Hawaii, is an unconventional one designed for those who enjoy going off the beaten path in an intimate and more authentic setting. U.S. passports aren't required to sail.

UnCruise visits four islands — Maui and Lanai plus Molokai and Hawaii — and focuses on not only their striking landscapes and underwater beauty but also the cultural traditions, cuisine and music of the Hawaiian people. On Molokai, where there's not a single traffic light and the lifestyle is slow-paced, passengers get a chance to "talk story" with locals and enjoy a pa'ina (feast) and evening jam session. Lanai activities range from snorkel, paddleboard and kayak excursions to off-road adventures exploring the privately owned island's dramatic sea cliffs, red rock formations and vast fields once filled with Dole pineapples.

Most UnCruise sailings are during Maui's humpback whale season, so sightings while cruising off the coast of Maui are possible. You might also catch glimpses of dolphins and sea turtles. A "Captain's Choice" day is a wild card determined by the weather, marine life in the area and other factors, while the final two days are spent exploring the Big Island of Hawaii — including a hike up Hualalai volcano and a skiff ride along the rugged coast.

Constructed in 1998, Safari Explorer was designed with adventure itineraries in mind (in summer the U.S.-flagged ship repositions to Alaska). Its size allows it to navigate areas larger ships can't reach, which in Hawaii means bays and coves ideal for snorkeling or watersports.

With such a small number of passengers aboard, guests get to know each other — and Safari Explorer's friendly and knowledgeable crew — quite well. Passengers come together over meals featuring locally sourced ingredients, and as all UnCruise fares include unlimited wines, spirits and microbrews, shipmates can raise a glass without worrying who's buying a round. It all lends itself to an exclusive yet utterly relaxed week of cruising.

Who should go: The ship's laid-back onboard vibe paired with its land- and water-based activities make the Hawaiian Seascapes itinerary ideal for active travelers seeking a nature-focused itinerary — although cruise fares (which start around $5,900 per person) are among the priciest for a Hawaii cruise.

Holland America's 17-night Circle Hawaii

Travelers who have more than two weeks to spare and who prefer to arrive in Hawaii via ship rather than an airplane can do so on Holland America 's 17-night Circle Hawaii itinerary. They'd better also love sea days because crossing the Pacific from San Diego or Vancouver to Honolulu and back requires 10 days.

That means passengers enjoy five or six days in Hawaii on Kauai, Oahu, Maui and the island of Hawaii. Some itineraries stay in select ports overnight. Cruises departing from San Diego also call on Ensenada, Mexico. With either departure port, passports will be required.

The itinerary is offered in 2024 and 2025 on the 2,650-passenger Koningsdam and 1,432-passenger Zaandam.

Travelers with more time on their hands can also visit Hawaii as part of longer Pacific island cruises with Holland America. Koningsdam will sail a 35-night Hawaii, Tahiti & Marquesas itinerary in 2025 that combines visits to four Hawaiian islands with calls on five islands in French Polynesia and Fanning Island, Kiribati (and 20 sea days).

Related: Holland America unveils epic cruise to Hawaii and Alaska for 2025

Zaandam will also sail 51- to 56-night Tales of the South Pacific itineraries that visit multiple islands in Hawaii and French Polynesia along with ports in the Cook Islands, American Samoa and Fiji.

Holland America is popular with cruisers ages 60 and older, many of them retired, who have time to enjoy longer itineraries on ships that offer good value with a focus on culinary and musical enjoyment. Two of Koningsdam's most popular venues are its live entertainment area with three venues — B.B. King's Blues Club (for Memphis-style rhythm and blues), Billboard Onboard (for chart-topping hits played by a live pianist) and Rolling Stone Rock Room (for a live band playing classic rock), and World Stage, a theater with a 270-degree screen used for both special BBC Earth in Concert and theatrical productions.

Onboard specialty dining options (at an added cost) include Pinnacle Grill for steaks and seafood, Tamarind for Pan-Asian cuisine and Rudi's Sel de Mer for French Brasserie specialties and seafood.

Who should go: Mature travelers who prefer not to fly and who enjoy a more traditional cruise experience. They should also love sea days as much (or even more so) than port exploration.

Princess Cruises' 15- or 16-night Hawaiian Islands

Princess Cruises is also a good option for longer sailings. The cruise line offers numerous round-trip itineraries to Hawaii from Los Angeles, San Francisco and San Diego in the fall and winter.

The majority of sailings are aboard the 3,080-passenger Crown Princess and Ruby Princess from San Francisco, and the 2,600-passenger Grand Princess and 3,080-passenger Emerald Princess from Los Angeles.

Ships are in port for nine to 11 hours in Hawaii (Hilo), Kauai and Maui and for 16 hours in Oahu. Itineraries include a stop in Ensenada, Mexico (so passports are required), plus nine or 10 sea days.

The ships feature many of Princess' popular dining venues, including Alfredo's Pizzeria (a sit-down venue serving personal-size pizzas), Crown Grill for steaks and Sabatini's Italian Trattoria. There's plenty of outdoor space for soaking up the sun — including an adults-only sun deck — and a dazzling Piazza for enjoying cocktails, gelato and pop-up street performers.

Fans of Princess' Movies Under the Stars poolside screenings (with free popcorn) and Discovery at SEA enrichment programming will have ample time to enjoy these perks on a Hawaii sailing.

Who should go: These sailings will appeal to couples or groups of friends who prefer to have a wide choice of sailing dates, can take the time to enjoy a leisurely Pacific crossing and appreciate Princess' focus on quality cuisine and a sun deck designed for relaxation rather than thrills.

Celebrity's 9- to 12-night Hawaii Cruise

Travelers seeking modern interior decor on a ship designed with couples in mind can visit Hawaii aboard Celebrity Cruises ' 2,852-passenger Celebrity Solstice or 2,918-passenger Celebrity Edge on itineraries ranging from nine to 13 nights — but only if the timing is right. That's because the line offers only two sailings per ship each year (in spring and fall) as the ships reposition between Alaska and destinations in the Pacific. The itineraries are one-way (Vancouver to Honolulu or vice versa) with passports required.

These cruises call on three ports on two islands: Honolulu (Oahu) and Hilo and Kona (Hawaii), with one or two overnights in port and 10 hours ashore on one-day visits. All include five days in a row at sea. Since the itineraries either begin or end in Honolulu, there's also a chance for some pre- or post-cruise exploration.

Sea days offer opportunities to enjoy the chic, grown-up ambience and amenities aboard these ships. Each vessel offers multiple complimentary and extra-fee specialty restaurants. Celebrity Solstice features Tuscan Grille for Italian specialties and steak and Murano for modern French cuisine, while Celebrity Edge offers the whimsical Le Petit Chef and the international Eden Restaurant.

Celebrity's signature Martini Bar and many other onboard watering holes keep the grown-up vibe going day and night. Choose cruise fares that include alcohol and Wi-Fi, or pay a lower rate and pay for your drinks as you go.

Who should go: The slightly shorter one-way sailings and the ships' contemporary ambience make these itineraries ideal for couples and groups of friends seeking a relaxing escape — especially Gen Xers in their 40s and 50s, who are Celebrity's target market.

Carnival's 14- or 15-night Hawaii from Los Angeles

If fun is your cruise mantra, the "Fun Ship" brand Carnival Cruise Line offers a handful of round-trip sailings to Hawaii from Los Angeles (Long Beach) aboard the 2,984-passenger Carnival Radiance. Like other roundtrips from the West Coast, these itineraries spend just five days in Hawaii, offering eight to 14 hours of shore time in ports on four islands: Maui, Kauai, Oahu and Hawaii. Along with enjoying eight sea days, guests will also call on Ensenada, Mexico, so passports are required.

Carnival Radiance first sailed under that name in 2021, but it's not a new ship. Before an epic makeover, it sailed for the cruise line as Carnival Victory. Ship features include many of Carnival's signature complimentary and extra-fee dining venues, including Guy's Burger Joint and Pig & Anchor Bar-B-Que Smokehouse, BlueIguana Cantina, Fahrenheit 555 Steakhouse and Bonsai Sushi Express.

Additional guest favorite destinations on board include the RedFrog Pub, Alchemy Bar and WaterWorks aquapark. Expect high-voltage theater shows from Playlist Productions at night and poolside interactive contests by day.

Who should go: Socially inclined cruisers who love Carnival's emphasis on onboard fun and can appreciate a colorful ship with a lively ambience and lots of day and evening activities.

Royal Caribbean's 9- to 13-night Hawaii Cruises

A megaship cruise experience to Hawaii is available, too — with pricing that's quite affordable. Royal Caribbean cruises there on two vessels in one of its newer classes of ships: the 4,180-passenger Quantum of the Seas and Ovation of the Seas.

All are one-way cruises just before or after the Alaska cruise season (so late April or early October) between Oahu and Vancouver (or vice versa). The ships call on two Hawaiian islands and spend four or five days in a row at sea. Passports are required since these itineraries begin or end in Vancouver.

Ovation of the Seas and Quantum of the Seas feature a mix of thrills for all ages. These include RipCord by iFly simulated sky diving, FlowRider simulated surfing, bumper car racing in the SeaPlex indoor activity complex and the North Star sightseeing capsule, which ascends 300 feet above the top deck for 360-degree views.

Both ships also offer 14 dining venues, including the innovative Wonderland, Jamie's Italian by Jamie Oliver and kid-favorite Dog House, as well as bar options that include Schooner Bar for by-request piano tunes, Boleros for mojitos and merengue and Bionic Bar for drinks poured by robotic bartenders. Entertainment includes live cover bands in the Music Hall and multimedia music and dance performances in Two70.

Who should go: Cruisers who love a big ship with a wide array of dining choices, all kinds of evening entertainment and plenty of exciting activities to pass the time on sea days. Quantum-class ships are great for families, but the sail dates might not work for those with school-age kids.

Viking's 16-night Hawaiian Islands Sojourn

For a guaranteed adults-only sailing in a relaxed, boutique-style setting, upscale cruise line Viking also offers round-trip Hawaii cruises from Los Angeles in late 2024 and early 2025 on its 930-passenger Viking Neptune.

What sets Viking apart from most of the other lines offering Hawaii cruises is that it includes a free shore excursion in every port. These include a highlights tour of Honolulu and Pearl Harbor on Oahu and a visit to a scenic waterfall and the Kilohana sugar plantation on Kauai. Additional excursions can be booked at an extra charge.

The 16-night Hawaiian Islands Sojourn sailings visit four islands — Hawaii (Hilo), Oahu, Kauai and Maui — and like other round-trip sailings from the West Coast include 10 sea days and a call on Ensenada, Mexico, so passports are required.

Viking Neptune will also do 32-night Grand Hawaii and Polynesia sailings round-trip from Los Angeles in late 2024 and early 2025 that visit four islands in Hawaii and four in French Polynesia.

The ship, which debuted in 2022, features sleek Scandinavian-inspired decor, a soothing spa with a complimentary thermal area, an aft infinity pool and hot tub, a panoramic Explorer's Lounge and five onboard restaurants. Specialty restaurant Manfredi's serves an extensive menu of Italian specialties, while The Chef's Table offers rotating five-course themed menus, including Asian, French and California-inspired.

In addition to the free shore excursions, pricing includes complimentary wine or beer with lunch and dinner, specialty dining at no extra charge, crew gratuities and transfers.

Who should go: Couples who prefer the quieter ambience of a ship that doesn't allow anyone under 18 onboard, doesn't have a casino and offers presentations by regional experts that enhance immersion into local culture. Viking cruisers are generally over age 55.
