This may be a great place to enjoy a hearty dinner and a fresh Mass of beer (one mug holds 33.8 US fl oz)!

DAY 2 Linderhof Palace and Hohenschwangau

In the morning enjoy a scenic drive towards the German Alp Mountains and visit Linderhof Palace and Park in Ettal on your way (about 100 kilometers/60 miles from Munich) to Hohenschwangau. Linderhof Palace was King Ludwig II´s Villa and the only building he totally completed during his lifetime. You may also stop in Oberammergau before you continue your drive on your way from Munich to Linderhof Palace where you can take a look at the “ Passionstheater  Oberammergau ” (site where the famous Passion plays are taking place once in a decade).

On your way to Hohenschwangau you will drive through the Austrian Alp Mountains for a little while before returning back to Germany. You may consider to take a break in Reutte to follow the “footsteps of a Knight” at the Museum located at Ehrenberg Castle . The exhibition at the Castle focuses on the medieval period of history.

DAY 3 Neuschwanstein Castle, Fussen, Lindau and Lake Constance

Start the 3th day of your South of Germany Self-Drive Tour with a visit of Neuschwanstein Castle. The picture of Neuschwanstein is probably present in everybody’s mind. Be prepared that reality will surpass all pictures and imaginations: Neuschwanstein seems to be taken out of a fairy tale! Seeing the castle from the outside is unforgettable, a tour of the insight, which was originally built for the one famous inhabitant Ludwig II (admission included), will make the picture perfect! Make sure to take some time to explore the castle grounds and the amazing view of Neuschwanstein from the bridge !

Before you head west towards Lake Constance you may want to follow the Romantic Road for a short drive (30 minutes) to visit the World famous Pilgrimage Church of ‘Flagellated Savior in the Meadow’ , a late work of the brothers Dominikus and Johann Baptist Zimmermann. The “ Wieskirche ” is located near the small town of Steingaden .

From Hohenschwangau drive to Füssen and follow the German Alpine Road to Lindau Island – located at Lake Constance. Along the Alpine Road you will pass the cities of “Lindenberg”, Oberstaufen, Immenstadt and Bad Hindelang. With a short detour it is also possible to visit the Duke-Abbot´s Residence in the city of Kempten (admission included – closed on Mondays!).

The scenic Old Town of Lindau is built on an island which is connected to the main land by a bridge. Lindau’s famous harbour , which is still regarded today as the most attractive anywhere on Lake Constance , was completed in 1856. The 6m high monument with the lion looking over the lake is located at the port entrance. It is a work by the sculptor Johann von Halbing. The Bavarian heraldic emblem flanks the harbor entrance together with the 33m high lighthouse . Thousands of lights create a magical harbor atmosphere.

Visit the historic Town Hall with its colorful facade which was first built 1422-36 and re-built in Renaissance style in 1578. The oldest building in Lindau is the “ Peterskirche ” (Church of St. Peter) which was built 1100 and is situated next to the Church of St. Stephan (built 1180).

DAY 4  Triberg and Black Forest

Drive from Lindau along the shores of Lake Constance towards Friedrichshafen and on to Castle Meersburg  which is the oldest inhabited Castle in Germany. After visiting Castle Meersburg continue to Basilika Birnau . The pilgrimage church is located above beautiful vineyards  from where you can enjoy a stunning view of Lake Constance.

Follow the road along Lake Constance toward Donaueschingen . In Donauesching you might want to visit the source of the River Danube , the so-called “Karstaufstoßquelle”. It has been identified as the historical source of the Danube ever since the Roman general Tiberius visited it in 15 BC. The source is framed in a romantic wrought iron basin, which lies in the palace grounds right next to the Prince of Fürstenberg’s Palace .

From Donaueschingen you need another 50 minutes to Triberg . When people tell you they are going to go visit the Black Forest , chances are pretty good they mean they are headed to Triberg. In a region that is laden with tourist attractions, there is none that compares to this small city in the centre of the Black Forest! Deep in the heart of the Black Forest, Triberg is home to the highest waterfall in the country. After your visit of the waterfall you might want to visit one of the most beautiful churches in the Black Forest, the Wallfahrtskirche Maria in der Tannen (Church of Our Lady of the Fir Trees). It is located on the western edge of town, just a 10-minute walk from the center. Triberg also claims to be the birthplace of the cuckoo clock , so if you’re in the market for a traditional timepiece, this is the place to find it. Nearly every restaurant and café offers the famous Schwarzwalder Torte ( Black Forest Cake ). Give it a try!

DAY 5 Black Forest and Heidelberg

From Triberg follow the scenic “Schwarzwaldhochstrasse” ( Black Forest Mountain Road ) to Freudenstadt. In Freudenstadt you will find Germany´s largest market square. Along the way you will find scenic places to stop and enjoy the views of the Black Forest. Continue on to Baden-Baden . The exclusive thermal spa resort is located at the foothills of the Black Forest in the south-western part of Germany. With its elegant flair and stylish way of life, Baden-Baden is a paradise for those who cherish life’s pleasures and wish to recharge their batteries.

Southern Germany Self-Drive Tour, Heidelberg Castle and Rothenburg ob der Tauber Germany to-europe.com

Heidelberg Castle ©Wowox via Wikimedia Commons and Rothenburg ob der Tauber ©Romantische Straße Touristik Arbeitsgemeinschaft GbR

From Baden-Baden it takes about an hour to Heidelberg. Your South of Germany Tour package includes a suggestion for a walking tour through the Old Town, a “must do” – of course – is a visit of the ruins of Heidelberg Castle which is idyllically towering above the Old Town located at the Neckar River. If you do not want to take the walk up there is also a  mountain train which you could take. From the Castle you have a beautiful view  over the city and the Neckar River. The historic Old Town is a lively city with many students living there. In your tour information sheets you will find a recommendation where to go for a typical dinner.

DAY 6 Castle Road and Rothenburg ob der Tauber

In the morning of Day 6 of your South of Germany Self-Drive Tour drive from Heidelberg along the Castle Road to Rothenburg ob der Tauber , one of Germany`s most beautiful medival cities. You enjoy a scenic drive along the shores of the Neckar River  and you may want to consider to visit Castle Guttenberg  and Grosscomburg Monastery located in the town of Schwäbisch Hall along the way.

Taking a walk thru the charming little town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber is truly a journey back in time. The town once was a powerful free imperial town and its monuments, landmarks and buildings still bear witness to these days. Marvel at the  half-timbered buildings and at town walls which have stood for hundreds of years, protecting the city since the Middle Ages. Visit the town’s most famous spot, the Ploenlein square , probably the most photographed place in Rothenburg ob der Tauber. Also very interesting to see is the Spitalbastei Gate , created by Leonhard Weidmann, the Latin inscription on the gate reading: ” Peace to those who enter, health to those who leave”. The Gothic St. James Church is the town’s most prominent church, here you can take a minute and relax in quietness while you enjoy the beauty of the famous Altar of the Holy Blood and the Twelve Apostles Altar . Every step you take in this old town is a step thru history with yet another beautiful spot to be discovered around the corner.

Rothenburg also offers museums which are cultural highlights, such as the Doll and Toy Museum where the history of playthings is shown, as well as the Crime Museum , where the visitor gets an insight into the law and especially its execution during the last 700 years. A highlight will be the  English-speaking tour with the Night Watchman  which starts at 8pm (included).

Southern Germany Self-Drive Tour, Wurzburg Residenz, Bamberg New Palace and Rose Garden and Imperial Castle Nuremberg Germany to-europe.com

Wurzburg Residenz ©Romantische Straße Touristik Arbeitsgemeinschaft GbR, Bamberg New Palace and Rose Garden ©BAMBERG Tourismus & Kongress Service and Imperial Castle Nuremberg ©Thomas H. Giesick

DAY 7  Day Trip to Wurzburg, Bamberg and Nuremberg

Follow the Romantic Road via Creglingen ( Riemenschneider Altar in the Church of the Lord), Weikersheim (Renaissance Palace and Garden) and Bad Mergentheim (you might want to visit the market place) to Würzburg where your hotel is located in the Old Town. The city is idyllically located in the midst of  vineyards , with the medieval Fortress Marienberg towering above. Wurzburg is an old bishop’s seat and a lively town, proudly presenting monuments of different eras. Culture, art, history and hospitality are ever-present in this remarkable city! Fortress Marienberg (admission included), Wurzburg´s landmark, has of course changed its appearance a great deal since it was first mentioned, today the oldest part of the fortress is the “ Rundkirche ” (round church) which was built in the year one thousand. The Cathedral , the Marienkapelle, the “ Alte Mainbrucke ” (old bridge across the river Main ), the Juliusspital and the “Kappele” are musts, but make sure that you do not miss out on the “ Furstbischofliche Residenz “, Prince Bishops Residence (admission included). This “Palace above all Palaces” is today a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Enjoy this beautiful town which offers not only cultural but also culinary highlights such as the hearty cuisin e and, of course, the world famous  Frankenwein (Franconia wine!).

After one hour drive you will get to another UNESCO World Heritage Site, the city of Bamberg . Bamberg is a rarity even by German standards, as the basic fabric of the  Old Town is largely obtained , over one thousand (!) buildings are land marked. A highlight in Bamberg is the New Residence and Rose Garden (admission included in your Central Germany Self-drive Tour & Cruise package). Construction of the New Residence began in 1613 and the palace has over 40 state rooms featuring stucco-work ceilings, furniture and tapestries from the 17th and 18th centuries. Another main attraction in Bamberg is the Imperial Cathedral which was built in the 13th century. Take a look at the magnificent marble tomb of the founder and his wife, a masterpiece of the German sculptor Tilman Riemenschneider . And do not miss to take a look at the  Bamberg Horseman.  This statue most likely dates to the period from 1225 to 1237.

From Bamberg it takes about 45 minutes to Nuremberg . The city’s history reaches back to the year 1050, its name “nourenberc” translating into “rocky hill”. Nuremberg has Nuremberg’s famous landmark, the Kaiserburg ( Imperial Castle , admission included), towers above the Old town, which is protected by the 5 kilometers long city wall with its many towers. The historic flair of Nuremberg with the Old Town surrounded by historic City Walls and the impressive Imperial Castle (which has never been conquered) let Adolf Hitler during the Third Reich choose Nuremberg as the location for their Nazi Party Rally Grounds . Within the monumental Congress Hall a museum and documentation center opened in 2001. Its permanent exhibition “Faszination und Gewalt” (Fascination and Terror) is concerned with the causes, connections, and consequences of the Nazi movement in Germany. If you are interested to visit the Rally Grounds you may also take a look at our blog “ Documentation Center Nazi Rally Grounds ”.

When exploring the beauty of Nuremberg’s mediaeval Old Town one can start at the Koenigstor  (“Kingsgate”), from where the timber framed buildings, the Gothic Church of St.Lawrence and the Church of St.Sebaldus can be easily reached by foot. Right next to the Koenigstor there is the Handwerkerhof (craft center), here you will feel like you are back in the medieval times, there are craft workshops like they used to have a long time ago as well as a gingerbread bakery. Make sure to enjoy a Nuremberg Bratwurst along with a beer or a glass of Frankenwein. In the evening drive back to your hotel in medieval Rothenburg ob der Tauber.

Southern Germany Self-Drive Tour, Dinkelsbuhl und Nordlingen Romantic Road Germany to-europe.com

Dinkelsbuhl und Nordlingen ©Romantische Straße Touristik Arbeitsgemeinschaft GbR

DAY 8 Romantic Road to Dinkelsbuhl and Nordlingen

Continue your South of Germany Self-Drive Tour through Bavaria and follow the Romantic Road towards Nördlingen . Driving time to Nördlingen is just about 1.5 hours and you will have plenty of time to visit some of the small towns along your way. On this part of the Romantic Road you find Schillingsfurst (you may want to visit the baroque Castle), Feuchtwangen as well as the former Free Imperial Town of Dinkelsbuhl with its charming Old Town. The historical old town with 16 towers, fortifications and magnificent patrician buildings is under a preservation order. The most important sights include the Minster of St. Georg , one of Germany´s most beautiful late Gothic hall churches, the ‘ Weinmarkt ‘ (wine market), the ‘Deutsches Haus’, the old hospital, the town mill and the picturesque ‘Rothenburger’ pond alongside the town wall. From Dinkelsbuhl follow the Romantic Road via Wallerstein to Nordlingen. Your hotel is located within the Old Town. The former Free Imperial Town of Nordlingen still has an almost complete medieval townscape . It is the only town in Germany with walls and battlements that can be walked all the way round. The historical old town is dominated by its landmark, the late Gothic hall Church of St. George , with its 90 m high bell tower ‘ Daniel ‘, which can be climbed 365 days a year.

DAY 9 Munich International Airport

It takes a little less than two hours from Nördlingen to  Munich Int. Airport .

If you have some more time that day before your departure you may follow the Romantic Road southbound to Augsburg  (a little less than an hour from Nördlingen) and you may want to visit Donauwörth along the way. From Augsburg you need a little over an hour to Munich International Airport.

Please let us know if you would like to extend your stay in Munich by adding a night or two – we will be happy to arrange this for you.   5-Days Romantic Road Self-Drive Tour  Just to say we thoroughly enjoyed our trip, the weather was lovely and the towns and villages very pretty and interesting. We especially liked the Hotel Spitzweg and the charming owner. The car was great, and the SAT NAV fantastic! Have not used one before but just great to whizz into a town and be taken to the door. All in all, a great trip and thank you again for organising everything for us.– Anne H.

For my 60th birthday, I wanted to plan my dream trip to Germany. This trip would be special to visit the birthplace of my grand father in the Black Forest and wanted to include a Rhine river cruise, some castles, Oktoberfest, and also a few days in Austria to visit Salzburg and Vienna Where I wanted to have a Sound of Music tour and visit the Spanish riding school. After much research online, I found TO-EUROPE and was so impressed with a quick response from Thomas as to how he could customize this trip for me. Their communication was prompt and efficient and the tour was laid out perfectly with all wonderful hotels and recommendations. All we had to do was follow the checklist and itinerary, and, everything went off without a hitch. I would highly recommend and will definitely use them again in the future.
Communication from beginning to end was exceptional! A dream to work with - even customizing our trip so we could add an additional adventure to our road trip. They thought of every detail and found us some adorable hotels we probably would not have found on our own! Wonderful itinerary and the car was great because we had flexibility to visit towns on our own timetable. I can't imagine planning this without them!. Would ABSOLUTELY use again and would highly recommend! Thank you.
We had been told by others who had used "to-europe" that this was a no miss for planning and enjoying a vacation in Germany. They were absolutely correct. From the planning stages through the pre-trip preparation and the actual visit, the "to-europe" staff were attentive to our wishes, thorough in their explanation, and extremely responsive before, during, and after the trip. We extended our stay to 11 days by requesting a train excursion from Munich to Salzburg, Austria then returning to Munich we picked up our rental car and were off on our adventure through southern Germany. The "to-europe" staff had our days planned with just enough scheduled events with plenty of time for travel and "free time" that we never felt rushed and were able to enjoy the full experience while in Germany. The accommodations each evening were very nice and located with easy access to the city in which we were staying. We look forward to the next time we visit Europe and will definitely work with "to-europe" again.
We were very satisfied with our 5 day tour that To Europe Tours put together around a wedding we were attending. Visited Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Fussen & castles and Lindau. All hotels and all staff at them were excellent. The car with automatic and GPS was great, but the wait to rent the car at Avis (Frankfurt airport) was very long. All vouchers worked very easily. The general information provided was useful, but for those of us new to Germany it would be nice if some basic information on driving the autobahn was provided.
Just back from 9 day self-drive Southern Germany, with extra day on Rhine. Our hotels were top-notch, clean, and friendly staff. Each was in the midst of everything, perfect locations. LOVED the attention I received from Thomas and staff ahead of trip, so detailed and answered all my questions timely. This was perfect balance of having the experts guide us without being on an actual tour bus.
We just got back from a 12 day self drive tour of the Bavarian region and it was perfect. All the hotels were wonderful and spotless. The locations were perfect for walking and the included breakfasts were fabulous. The suggestions for sites to visit were great and the excursion card for admission to various castles was fabulous. We lucked out with perfect weather everyday. I would highly recommended using to-europe to book a trip.
I was planning a trip to Germany and knew of certain places I wanted to go but didn't really have time to get it all planned out. I stumbled across To Europe Tours and went with it. Im so happy I did as everything was superb! The hotels, car rental, castles, places to go, all their suggestions were great! I had a few things I wanted to add in and they did that for me as well. During the middle of our trip we had a question. We called and they answered our question quickly and had no problems at all. The one thing I would say is we went in Sept. when it was cool and rainy. There was only one hotel that had AC. If you went when it was warmer and need AC you might be uncomfortable. However, some of the hotels did have a fan in the rooms. This does not reflect on my review on To Europe just a side note for those needing AC. I will use them again if I ever get the chance to venture back!
From the moment we picked up our car with its highly sophisticated GPS, and arrived at our first hotel, we knew To-Europe.com was a highly efficient company. This was our first booking with them, but certainly, not our last. Throughout the 11 days of traveling the Romance Road, we had no hitches. All the hotels were fabulous and more luxurious than we would have booked ourselves. The breakfasts provided had plentiful choices and the staffs most accommodating. Our experiences in the recommended castles, palaces, and museums proved to be culturally and historically enlightening. We found Germany to be the cleanest European country we've ever visited. Everything was so well organized and we highly recommend this tour not only because it is value priced, but also for all the varied opportunities one can enjoy along the route.
Absolutely perfect! Hotels all in great locations, fantastic accommodations and wonderful breakfast buffets. Walking tour suggestions hit the highlights for each suggested stop. GPS information for each included. They even had the perfect suggestion for a special stay at a castle hotel. We will be using To Europe again!
We are so happy we used your company to go on this trip. Everything was just perfect. From the momentwe rented our car to the last hotel. This is the first tour we have done "on our own" and it far surpassed our hopes. The communication with everyone at to-europe was perfect and everything you promised was delivered. The hotels were historic and perfectly located right in the middle of everything. We could walk to the sites, restaurants, and, of course, shopping. The only complaint we have is there was just too much to do! That is really not so much a complaint as an indication of the wonderful itinerary your company was able to set up. Thank you so much for this wonderful tour. We highly recommend.

Itinerary idea in detail

Ask us if you would also like us to arrange your international flights at our preferred rates.

On arrival at Berlin Brandenburg Airport, you’ll be met by your driver and transferred to your hotel in central Berlin. Depending on your arrival time, you may wish to explore the city. Due to its division by the Berlin Wall, Berlin is one of the most diverse cities in Germany with seemingly endless attractions and memorials, not to mention its top museums and aptly named Museum Island.

Reichstag building, Berlin

Spend today exploring Berlin at your own pace. The city’s complex history, edgy street art scene, and Neoclassical monuments make it a varied modern capital and sprawling metropolis that shows a plethora of identities through its many districts. We’ll provide plenty of suggestions to ensure you make the most of your time in the city.

Berlin Statue

You’ll pick up your fully insured car hire this morning as you embark on a full-day excursion around Potsdam, Sanssouci and Cecilienhof Palaces. On the outskirts of Potsdam’s cobblestone streets is the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Sanssouci Palace, or ‘the Versailles of Germany’. After, you’ll travel to the English Tudor manor house styled Cecilienhof where the Allied powers met after World War II to discuss the occupation of Germany.

Graffiti street art on Berlin postboxes

Leave Berlin and drive southwards to Nuremberg in the state of Bavaria. The journey is just over five hours, however, both Leipzig and Dresden are about halfway should you choose to stop en route. Arriving in Nuremberg you’re free to explore the medieval city at your leisure. There are plenty of sights to visit in this historical town, including the hilltop Kaiserburg Castle, the pastel-painted Weissgerbergasse, and the jostling main square’s Hauptmarkt.

Nuremberg's historic old town

This morning you will meet your private guide to discover the labyrinthine corridors and vaults that lie beneath Nuremberg’s medieval old town. The carved red sandstone tunnels and spaces were used primarily for the ripening and storage of beer and, during World War II, provided vital shelter for its residents. After the tour you’ll visit a brewery and whisky distillery with a tasting of local specialities.

Nuremberg Old Town cobbled street

Leave Nuremberg and drive to Rothenburg, where half-timbered houses, pastel-painted stone buildings and a fortified ring wall envelop the city. Today it boasts a thousand years of intact history among its cobblestones, appearing largely as it did during the Middle Ages. After exploring Rothenburg’s authentic avenues, you’ll join the notable Romantic Road and drive southwards to Munich, winding through medieval villages, wooded forests and tiny Bavarian towns flanked by looming mountains.

Aerial view of Munich

Today you’ll discover how Munich became a World War II stronghold with a private walking tour of the city often called ‘the capital of the movement’. While many of the World War II-era buildings were destroyed by bombing or Allied forces, some important places remain. You’ll visit museums based in what was once the headquarters of the National Socialist Party and see the beer hall where Hitler scripted his plans.

Munich Residenz

Today is yours to explore Munich and the surrounding area at your own pace. You could sip Bavarian beer in the Englischer Garten or explore the culinary delights of Viktualienmarkt. Take a tour of the BMW Museum, venture to Hitler’s Eagle’s Nest or the nearby Austrian city of Salzburg. Spend this evening in Munich’s National Theatre for an evening with the State Opera and Orchestra, followed by a revealing and privately guided behind-the-scenes tour.

Opera House at night

You’ll leave Munich today and follow the Romantic Road to Neuschwanstein Castle. Here, you’ll catch a glimpse into King Ludwig II’s whimsical tastes through the spiked turrets, the Romanesque castle’s design, and its homage-filled interior inspired by composer Richard Wagner, whom Ludwig greatly admired. You’ll continue your journey to Freiburg, partly following the scenic German Alpine Road, snaking along the Austrian and Switzerland borders through the German Alps, past glimmering lakes and lush green pastures.

Freiburg at sunset

Today you’ll meet with your private guide and venture to the farmers’ market in the cobblestone square surrounding the Münster. You’ll learn of the market’s history and the architecture of the buildings on the square while sampling your way through the market’s myriad spices, sausage and locally made crafts. After the market you’ll head to a local cafe to sit and enjoy the city’s special atmosphere, followed by an afternoon at leisure.

Aerial view of farmer's market, Freiburg

This morning you’ll depart Freiburg and drive to Heidelberg, which sits nestled in a thickly forested area and has long drawn visitors to its romantic cityscape. It was once the heart of the German Romanticism movement, which is still today seen through its uniformly red-roofed buildings, the gentle arches of the old stone bridge, and the imposing castle. You’ll then continue your journey to Frankfurt, which is a further hour or so drive northwards.

Old town, Frankfurt

Today, you have a full day at leisure to explore Frankfurt. The city offers a plethora of museums, a neo-classical opera house and a multitude of universities, making it a cultural hub. Peruse the stalls at Kleinmarkthalle, or perhaps explore Römerberg’s medieval square, visit the birthplace of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, or see where Kings of the Holy Roman Empire were crowned at Frankfurt Cathedral.

Hauptwache Square, Frankfurt

You may have some time to spend in Frankfurt this morning, perhaps browsing the city’s shops for any last-minute souvenirs. You’ll then drive to Frankfurt Airport where you return your hire car and board your onward flight.

Arrival and Welcome

Arrive in Munich. Following transfers to your stunning first hotel, spend the afternoon enjoying the hotel's extensive amenities, or exploring the charming village in which the property is located. In the afternoon you'll meet our representative for a walk-through and handover of your chosen vehicle.

First Drive Day

The first day of your luxurious self-guided driving tour of Germany and Austria warms up with a run south through backroads in the Bavarian countryside. From here you will cross into Austria and arrive at your second hotel — a postcard-worthy five-star converted castle on the shores of a stunning lake in Salzburg.

Second Drive Day

Day two of your self-drive takes you south to conquer the superb Grossglockner alpine pass. The route is incredibly scenic and quite technical — a delight for both drivers and passengers. Later, check into an opulent hotel in a picturesque alpine town. We recommend dining on the terrace (weather permitting!).

Third Drive Day

On the third day of your drive, you will continue back up north via a series of lesser-known but enjoyable alpine passes and roads, passing through the renowned ski town of Kitzbuhel. In the afternoon, you will cross back into Bavaria to carve up the backroads around Tegernsee, where you can conclude the drive with a glass of champagne (or two!).

Optional City Tour of Munich | Departures

Enjoy a sleep-in and a leisurely breakfast before departure. Check-out from the hotel is midday, and from here the day is yours before transfers and onwards travel. Time permitting, we recommend returning to Munich for the day to enjoy a hosted city tour exploring the history, architecture, food and, of course, beer, for which Bavaria is famed.

Choose the supercar to take on your luxury Germany and Austria driving holiday

If you’re hungry for a gorgeous, driver-friendly supercar that’s quick-as-lightning, the new release update to the incredible R8 delivers, and then some. Consider your wish granted.

With a dauntingly low driving position, way back over the rear axle, the devastatingly handsome GT R draws heavily on the lauded SLS. An agile yet comfortable grand tourer.

Hailed by critics and fans alike as one of the finest 911s of the modern era, the 991 GT3 features the legendary 4.0L flat-six capable of singing far beyond 8,000 rpm for a truly exceptional driving experience.

The successor to the adored 458 sees the eager-revving and naturally aspirated V8 retired in favour of a turbocharged powerplant. This supercar will propel you from 0 - 100 in just three seconds.

The Huracan is a fantastic combination of fast, loud, and sharp. With an ingenious 4WD system, the Performante offers impressive technical specs and performance to boot.

Be warned: while there are many fast cars out there, few have the performance capabilities that require drivers to up their game so profoundly. Are you ready for this beast?

Discover Germany: 11 days/10 nights – From Berlin to Berlin

Day 1 | Welcome to Berlin – Pick up your rental car 0 km*

Founded in the 13th century Berlin’s eventful history is one of frequent, radical changes with dazzling epochs alternating with darker eras. However the formerly divided city has succeeded in becoming a vibrant metropolis set in the heart of Europe. With more than 170 museums and collections offering everything from the ancient (Egyptian Nefertiti and the Greek Pergamon Altar) to the ultra-modern.

Accommodation: Tourist ClassKurfurst or similar (2 nights)

Day 2 | Berlin 0 km*

Berlin is an exciting city of contrasts and contradictions that can be seen in the many historical and modern attractions. The Jewish Museum, opened in 2001, sits on land that was both East and West Berlin before the Berlin Wall fell and covers two millennia of German Jewish history. Monuments of Prussian grandeur stand beside reminders of a divided country alongside stunning new architectural developments

Day 3 | Berlin – Dresden 197.95 km*

Drive from Berlin to Dresden where we have arranged your overnight stay, This will allow you a glimpse of the varying charms of Saxony’s 1000 years history. Dresden’s historical center is located on the left bank of the river Elbe. The Royal Palace was built in the15th century and having been destroyed by fire in 1701 was rebuilt but again destroyed by the bombings of 1945. It has now been reconstructed as a museum complex. The reconstruction in 2005 of the 18th century Frauenkirche church’s steeple which rises above Dresden’s skyline is an impressive symbol of international reconciliation after World War II.

Accommodation: Tourist ClassAchat Hotel Dresden or similar

Day 4 | Dresden – Modlareuth – Bavaria – Bayreuth –Nuremberg 312.21 km*

Leave Dresden and worth a stop is Modlareuth, a small village situated partly in Bavaria and partly in Thuringia. With the northern part in East Germany and the southern part in West Germany in 1966 a wall was erected splitting the village apart (like Berlin). Since 1989 the wall, together with towers, helicopter and vehicles, stand as an open air museum and tells the story about the village and its wall. Continue your drive through Bavaria to Bayreuth with its Baroque Opera House, considered the most beautifully preserved in Europe. Every summer Wagner’s operas are performed during the month-long Richard Wagner Festival. Continue on to Nuremberg where we have arranged your overnight stay. Here you will see the city’s unique mixture of modern with its almost thousand years of historical past. Life here is colorful all year round, with its green meadows on the banks of the River Pegnitz and its park containing one of Europe’s largest and most beautifully landscaped zoos. Worth a visit is the Courtroom where Nuremberg’s famous Wartime Trials took place from 1945-6. The city offers a large selection of bars, cafes and restaurants serving gourmet food to delicious local food to Turkish fast food. A great treat would be a visit to the opera or ballet at the State Theatre.

Accommodation: Tourist Class Hotel Victoria or similar

Day 5 | Nuremberg – Rothenburg – Munich 167.37 km*

From Nuremberg drive to Rothenburg, Germany’s best preserved walled town. Walk through the city’s two main market streets, crammed with picture-perfect houses, cafes and restaurants. Visit the Medieval Crime Museum to explore the unusual law enforcement techniques used by local rulers in medieval times. Before leaving Rothenberg try some of the city’s authentic food, the schneeballen which is egg dough fried and sprinkled with powdered sugar or covered with chocolate.

Continue on through Bavaria to Munich, where we have arranged your overnight stay. A city of museums, romantic castles and palaces, gardens and parks, the baroque Nymphenburg Palace with Park and Pavilions was the summer residence of Bavarian monarchs and houses several outstanding art collections. Among Munich’s many museums is the AltePinakothek – one of the oldest and most important galleries in the world with more than 800 European art masterpieces from the Middle Ages to the Rococo period. Munich has seven Michelin-starred restaurants, and many locally owned restaurants offering regional fare and of course Germany’s famous beer gardens.

Accommodation: Tourist Class Hotel Saint Paul or similar

Day 6 | Munich – Oberammergau – Stuttgart 366.93 km*

Today visit the village of Oberammergau, famous for its production of the Passion Play. First performed in 1634, as a result of a vow made by its inhabitants for God to spare them the bubonic plague then sweeping the region, it has been performed every 10th year ending with a zero. Oberammergau has a long tradition of woodcarving, and there are dozens of woodcarver shops with pieces ranging from religious subjects to toys. Many of the homes and buildings have frescoes of traditional Bavarian themes, fairy tales or religious scenes.

Accommodation: Tourist Class Ibis Styles Hotel or similar

Day 7 | Stuttgart – Heidelberg – Frankfurt 206 km*

From Stuttgart your drive takes you to Heidelberg, a jewel of German cities. Here you will find many places of interest. The best way to enjoy the old town is to simply wander around and see what you come upon, it doesn”t cover a particularly large area, so there”s no chance of you getting lost and you”ll find plenty of opportunities to pick up some souvenirs or stop for a coffee and some traditional local food.

Say your goodbyes to Heidelberg then travel to the 2,000-year-old city of Frankfurt, where we have arranged your overnight stay. The city has an appealing variety of historic buildings, and boasts a famous opera house, thriving theater district, scores of bars, cafes and restaurants. Frankfurt has much to offer and its open and hospitable atmosphere stems from its centuries-old role as a trading center. Enjoy the experience of traditional Frankfurt cuisine at one of the city’s many cozy cider bars and enjoy a glass of their traditional cider with small cheeses marinated in an onion sauce, or pork chops served with sauerkraut.

Accommodation: Tourist Class Hotel Adler or similar

Day 8 | Frankfurt – Hesse – North Rhine-Westphalia –Cologne 193.12 km*

Leave Frankfurt and drive through Hesse with its densely forested upland range of mountains to the main river that flows through the region of North Rhine-Westpahlia, the River Rhine. Although parts of the area is industrial with high-tech industries, North Rhine-Wesphalia offers much rural charm and natural beauty with densely wooded rolling hills, beautiful lakes, fields and pastures, sheltered small villages and picturesque historic towns. Further up the Rhine is Cologne, one of the oldest cities in Germany and where we have arranged your overnight stay. At the beginning of the 18th century Italian expatriate Johann Farina created a new fragrance and named it after his hometown Cologne – hence Eau de Cologne (Water of Cologne). As a major cultural center of the Rhineland Cologne has a vibrant arts scene with hundreds of galleries. Cologne is also famous for its Cathedral, begun in 1248 the construction of this Gothic masterpiece took place in stages and was not completed until 1880. The city is proud to be the home of one of Europe’s oldest universities, the University of Cologne.

Accommodation: Tourist Class Hotel Domstern or similar

Day 9 | Cologne – Bremen – Hamburg 444.18 km*

Your drive from Cologne to Hamburg first takes you to the port city of Bremen. Spend some time here and visit the Marktplatz which is dominated by the Town Hall. Today it hosts a restaurant with original décor and gigantic wine barrels and whose wine list boasts over 600 German wines. This 1,200 year old city has a unique quality with its wealth of restaurants, beer gardens, riverboats and antique markets.

Continue to Germany’s biggest harbor city, Hamburg, where we have arranged your overnight stay. It is also the greenest city in Germany with its parks, tree-lined canals, protected countryside and nature reserves. Its skyline is dominated by the pale green of its copper spires and domes, though but a few houses and churches are all that is left from before the last century. The Great Fire of 1842 was the main cause of this loss, followed by the bombing during World War II. The grand building of the unique Rathaus, the city hall supported by dozens of pillars, is worth a visit. End your day as you relax in one of the many beer halls, cafes and restaurants.

Accommodation: Tourist Class Fuerst Bismarck

Day 10 | Hamburg – Berlin 386.24 km*

From Hamburg return to Berlin and further explore this fascinating city, where we have arranged your overnight stay. Visit the Museum of Checkpoint Charlie where a section of the Berlin Wall, once the crossing point between East and West Germany, has been re-erected as a museum. Once notorious for its cabaret nightlife, Berliners now refer to their favorite cafes, restaurants or bars as Lokale. Here you can drink and mingle with Berlin’s artists, writers, students, business people and politicians and experience the warmth and chaos of these interesting places as people become embroiled in lively discussions of art or life. Try the fizzy local beer which is served with a shot of juice.

Accommodation: Tourist Class Kurfurst Hotel or similar or a Tourist Class Airport Hotel

The list is endless.

  • SEE MORE HIGHLIGHTS

Made famous by iconic scenes from the James Bond classic Goldfinger, Furka Pass is an incredibly challenging but exhilarating drive for those fortunate enough to experience it.

Grossglockner

Grossglockner High Alpine Road is an experience that is better absorbed rather than rushed. Use its purpose-built sidings to pull over and admire the snow-capped peaks.

Susten Pass

We rate Susten Pass as the best road in the Alps. Yes, it’s that good. Approaching from the west, the climb begins with the Sustenstrasse, cutting its way through meadows.

Nockalmstrasse

Nestled in an idyllic pocket of central Austria, Nockalmstrasse isn’t one of the well-known touring tracks of Austria, even though it’s in striking distance of Salzburg, Hallstatt and Lienz.

Hahntennjoch

Hahntenjoch is one of the most renowned driving experiences in the Alps – a classic pass road that captures the very best of alpine driving.

Stelvio Pass

Famously named the best driver’s road in the world by Top Gear, Stelvio is arguably the most iconic stretch of road in Europe.

As Germany’s ‘Gateway to the Alps’, Munch’s unique geographic position places it within striking distance of many of the Austrian and Swiss driving highlights we feature on our tours.

Tyrol, Austria

With its turquoise lakes, charming villages and beautiful mountain scenery, the state of Tyrol encapsulates the best of Alpine Austria – even down to the contented belled cows that dot the countryside.

The southernmost state of the republic has an almost unfair share of Germany’s most seductive attractions: idyllic villages, fascinating history, magnificent castles, architectural marvels, the pristine peaks of the Alps, infamous beer and one of the best road networks on earth.

Romantic Germany Self-Drive: Heidelberg, Innsbruck, Black Forest & More

germany self drive tours

Itinerary Details

MODERATE | SELF-DRIVE: This one week Germany self drive tour takes you through the country’s most picturesque regions and cities, including Heidelberg, the Black Forest, the mountains and castles of Bavaria, and lively Munich.

Romantic Germany Escorted Touring Frankfurt to Munich

This 9-day self-drive Germany trip, staying in three and four star accommodations, is focused on the country’s postcard favourites, including the evocative Black Forest, and its most picturesque big city, Munich.

Frankfurt may be more famous for its airport and banks than its sights, but those who arrive early will still enjoy wandering the Romerplatz, or strolling the banks of the Main before travelling to Heidelberg. Heidelberg is Germany’s great university town, and a popular destination in its own right. It’s also your gateway to one of the most famous forest regions in the world. The beautiful Black Forest is shrouded in myth, and offers plenty of walks to sights such as Ravenna Gorge. The following day, see how cuckoo clocks are made, and enjoy a Black Forest cheese tasting. You’ll also take in spectacular views of the Alps from Lindau, an island in Lake Constance.

Time to explore the castles and beer halls of Bavaria. Germany’s most iconic region is also its most unique, bearing little resemblance to the rest of the country it’s come to represent in popular imagination. But the sights are spectacular, including Neuschwanstein Castle, home to mad King Ludwig II. You’ll also stop in at Wieskirche Church and Linderhof Castle. Sneak an extra country into your trip when you cross the border to visit Innsbruck. It’s perhaps Austria’s most famous and beautiful Alpine city, and a two time host city to the Winter Olympics. Innsbruck has been hailed as a medieval wonder, the ultimate ski resort town, a university hub, and more, so there’s a side of it to satisfy any travel interest. Look closely for Roman influences in the architecture.

Arrive at your final destination, Munich. The country’s third largest city is the Germany of fairy tales and travel brochures, awash with medieval architecture, and atmospheric drinking dens (Non-beer drinkers needn’t worry. Germany does a fine range of wines as well.). Take a city tour around the main attractions including Marienplatz, the city square famous for its clock tower. Those visiting in September may be caught up in the fun and frivolity of Oktoberfest, but a visit to Munich is memorable at any time of year. You’ll also take a side trip to the romantic medieval city of Rothenburg before you depart.

Itinerary View Trip Map

  • First Class

Upon arrival at Frankfurt airport, collect your rental vehicle and transfer to the hotel. The rest of the day is free to spend at your leisure. Frankfurt is the financial and commercial heart of Germany, a city full of fascinating contrasts between modern development and historic landmarks.

Frankfurt - Heidelberg - Black Forest

In the morning, travel from Frankfurt to Heidelberg. Consider visiting its famous castle, ascending with the cable car and then enjoy a leisurely tour of the historic city center. Idyllically located on the shores of the Neckar River, Heidelberg is Germany's oldest university town and one of the most popular destinations in the country. Later, continue to the famous Black Forest region.

Black Forest - Lake Titisee - Lindau - Füssen

After breakfast, consider visiting a small traditional Black Forest farm to enjoy a cheese tasting, perhaps the best way to see the real Black Forest. After that, travel to Lake Titisee, nestled in the legendary Black Forest and tour the small island of Lindau in Lake Constance, which offers spectacular views of the Alps; although it is only a recommendation, it is a must-see. Depending on weather conditions, take the Alpine road from Lindau to Oberstaufen and Immenstadt to your final destination Füssen, the southernmost point on this tour of Romantic Germany.

Neuschwanstein - Wieskirche - Innsbruck

We recommend starting the day with a visit to iconic Neuschwanstein Castle, built by Ludwig II, the notorious "Mad King". This castle served as an inspiration to Walt Disney when he built the castle of Sleeping Beauty in Disneyland. At midday, travel to Oberammergau, famous for its Passion Play and lovely crafts. Along the way, stop to visit the Wieskirche Church before continuing the tour to visit Linderhof Castle. This is one of the three castles built by King Ludwig II of Bavaria and the only one where the king lived for a significant amount of time. After a brief stop at the Ettal Benedictine Abbey, continue to your final destination for the day, Innsbruck.

Innsbruck - Munich

In the morning, take the time to explore Innsbruck at your own pace. Located in the gorgeous deep valley of the River Inn, between the scenic Karwendel Mountains stand to the north and Tuxer Mountains to the south. In the afternoon, travel to Munich.

After breakfast, visit the city's main attractions, making sure to visit Marienplatz Square with its famous clock tower. Munich, the capital of the state of Bavaria, is famous for its Oktoberfest, which is annually celebrated in September.

Munich - Nuremberg

After breakfast, travel to Nuremberg. Here, you are encouraged to explore Nuremberg's historic city center and learn more about its impressive history and see the well-preserved castle, Gothic churches, romantic houses, and peaceful squares.

Nuremberg - Rothenburg - Frankfurt

Today, continue onward to Rothenburg ob der Tauber, one of the oldest and most beautiful cities in Romantic Germany. Walk your way through this lovely medieval town and consider a Schneeballen (snowball) tasting; a pastry considered the signature dish of Rothenburg. Later, travel to Frankfurt and overnight at an airport hotel.

After breakfast, return your vehicle and prepare for your international departure.

The Best Of Ireland

The tour was great and our tour / bus driver is one of the best. He's extremely knowledgeable about all aspects of Ireland and went out of his way to do extra things that were not on the itinerary. We had plenty of time at all of our stops and loads of free time as well. Thanks Indus for a great time.

This was a great adventure. The trip is well organized and once we booked a tour the company was very responsive. There are so many places to see and explore each day, and it makes for long days with late arrivals at the hotels. All the hotels were very satisfactory. I had 2 concerns regarding the trip. 1) The beer spa. Our visit was scheduled for 2pm and there is no way that we could possibly been there by that time. It followed a long day of exploring the Snaefellsness Pennisula. It did not seem possible to cover that amount of area and still arrive back in time for the beer spa appointment. We had to skip this one. 2) Why was Hella selected as one of our hotel overnights? We had to cover so much ground and events in the first few days and then suddenly our daily driving time dropped significantly the last couple of days. What were we supposed to do near Hella?

Best of Croatia 11 Days, Self-Drive

Overall good. The only issue was lack of free parking at some hotels In Zagreb had a pay a large amount to park the car at the airport, which did not need until we left Zagreb 2 nights later. While parked outside the hotel some locals deliberately scratched the hire car with a key or screw driver. It would have been much better if the hire car was delivered to hotel the morning that we departing Zagreb

Alles perfekt organisiert.

We had a great time! The hotels picked for us were so great. The breakfast must have been awesome because when i came home weighed the same as when i left and we walked lots. The location of the hotels put us in the middle of the best areas. Very helpful with all our needs. Would book with them again.

Europe road trip reviews.

The communication/paperwork could use a little fine tuning, but overall the value was definitely there. This tour brings you through absolutely spectacular areas of Ireland, with enough downtime to not feel too rushed. The hotels/food was nicer than we expected for the price.
The locations and hotels selected were excellent. At the last minute my husband ended up in a wheelchair for most of the trip. Once I mentioned it to the check-in staff they went above and beyond to accommodate our needs. Changing rooms so that he had a walk in shower, a room close to the elevator and assistance with luggage or whatever we needed. Thank you.
Excellent itinerary, great hotels, easy to read maps with lots of good information. Iceland is unique and beautiful, full of contrasts, wildlife and natural beauty.
