Sasan Gir Safari – Gir National Park Lion Safari, Gujarat, India

Sasan Gir Safari

Sasan Gir Safari is one of the most incredible of wildlife experiences. Coming face to face with the Asiatic Lion in the Gir National Park is thrilling.

Sasan Gir Lions

Sasan Gir Safari is one of the most incredible of wildlife experiences. Coming face to face with the Asiatic Lion in the Gir National Park, Gujarat India is thrilling.

“ Don’t make any body movements “! was the staccato command issued by our guide Siddi Bapu. The six of us in the open jeep froze in our skins. Coming straight towards us was a full-grown lion. Not a muscle in our bodies twitched, as we watched transfixed. The lion came nearer and nearer. As he drew nearer, the embodiment of leonine beauty and grace mesmerized us.

As he walked, each leg rising and falling on the ground with perfect precision in a fluid movement, the jungle itself serenaded him. It was like the hero making his entry in a Bollywood film. He walked to the background music of crows and other birds striking up a racket. Our Sasan Gir Safari in Gujarat , India was surely turning to be the stuff of dreams, we thought in elation.

Sasan Gir Safari – Cavorting With Lions

Sunrise at Sasan Gir

The winter season ensured that there was a nip in the air as we drove past some wheat fields bathed in golden morning light towards the Reception Centre of the Gir National Park to begin our Gir Jungle Safari. We were really optimistic about sighting the big cat in what is the last home of the Asiatic Lion.

There is nothing that can beat the pleasure of watching wildlife in their natural environment, the thrill is unique, be it meeting mountain gorillas face-to-face in Africa, or catching the glimpse of the Royal Bengal tiger at the Pench National Park, or visiting any of the Wildlife sanctuaries in India . As we drove into the Reception Centre we had only one thing on our minds, Lions!

Sasan Gir Safari

The Reception Centre is where we picked up our guide Siddhi Bapu.

Siddi Guide in Sasan Gir National Park

He belonged to the Siddi community that trace their ancestry to East Africa. In India, this community is found in regions of Gujarat, Karnataka , and Andhra Pradesh. Siddi Bapu informed us that his ancestors were from Nigeria. However, they have no connections with Nigeria now. They are fully integrated into the local culture and follow local customs.

Entry Gate to Gir National Park

Chatting with our guide we left the Sinh Sadan where the Reception Centre of Gir National Park is located and drove a few kilometres to reach the gate that led into the Gir National Park. We had been allotted Route No. 4 and the gate through which we entered the Park was common for routes 2, 4, 6, 9, 11, and 12. There is a different entry gate for the other routes. There is a total of 13 routes from which each Safari jeep gets allocated one.

Gir National Park

The sunlight pierced through the overhanging branches of the trees. We drove behind the brown cloud of dust blown by the jeep in front. Our guide regaled us with stories of Lions, he told us about the 2020 Lion census that was coming up. He also told us about celebrity visitors with whom he had guided during the Lion Safari.

“ Amitabh Bachhan had to do 3 Safaris before he could get a lion sighting,” said Siddi Bapu with a sardonic smile playing on his lips. He then went on to narrate an incident where a foreigner failed to get a Lion sighting even after camping there for a couple of weeks and going on numerous Lion Safaris!

Sasan Gir Safari

Was he subtly preparing us for disappointment? Were we destined to return empty-handed? Or would we get lucky on our first safari itself? These were the questions that hummed through our minds as we drove deeper into the teak wood laden Gir forest in search of Lions.

A movement in the bushes to our right caught our attention. They turned out to be a small herd of docile deer glancing shyly at us. Their serene composure was testimony to the absence of any Lion in the vicinity.

Sasan Gir National Park

We crossed a rivulet and the Guide informed us that the water was the home of crocodiles, though we did not spot any. Probably, they were spread languorously on the rocks behind basking in the sun.

Landscape of Gir National Park

A cute little bird drank water from a small stream as a couple of trees threw their shadows in the water. It was a picture of serenity. Everything seemed calm in the jungle. Things seemed to be in perfect harmony, the only jarring effect perhaps was our presence.

A sounder of wild boars made their way noiselessly in the shadows. We came upon a small clearing in the path. It was then that we saw the Lion.

Lions of Sasan Gir

In the distance, straight in front of us a Lion crossed the track and sat down beside it. There were two jeeps in front of us and we were still quite a distance from it.

Asiatic Lion of Gir National Park

The jeeps had stopped in their tracks. It was clear that now it was going to be a game of waiting.

Asiatic Lion

The lion sat gazing towards the path and was soon joined by another Lion who too crossed the path and sat next to the first lion.

We were delighted! We had been able to sight not one but two lions. But alas! they were quite far off. The two lions are male and are siblings informed our guide, they are 3.5 years old and control a wide territory, he added.

“Reverse”! on hearing this, our jeep started retreating in reverse, so did the other two jeeps. It became clear why this was done very soon. One of the lions stood up and started walking along the path, straight towards us.

This was when Siddi Bapu issued his stern command, “Don’t make any body movements”!

Lion sighting at Sasan Gir

The Lion sauntered towards the front jeeps, crossed them and slowly, with a typical, “devil may care”, attitude walked past us. It passed from the right side of our jeep and disappeared into the woods. Even as we looked in amazement at the leonine grace of the big cat retreating into the jungle, it dawned on us that there was another big cat behind us!

Lion sigting Gir National Park

As we turned back towards the point where the two Lions had been sitting, we saw the second Lion too following the footprints of his brother Lion, but with a difference.

The second Lon moved towards our left flank. He walked towards the trees and then took a slight turn and came straight towards our jeep. We could literally hear his breathing and are sure he would have heard the loud thumping of our hearts.

Lion Safari at Gir National Park

Our eyes met for a fraction of a second, and he was gone in a flash of golden glory. The mand on his lithe body glistening in the sunlight, his limbs moving in rhythmic perfection, a gait that would be the envy of any supermodel. He too walked away along the path, took a left turn and disappeared behind his brother into the woods.

There was absolute silence for a few moments, as we all soaked in and absorbed the intensity of what had just happened. And then all hell broke loose, excited chatter erupted in the jeep and the guide had to warn everyone to be silent as moved ahead into the Gir National Park.

But for most of us, our purpose for visiting the Gir National Park had been served. We were thrilled out of our wits.

Beautiful Landscapes of Gir National Park

Sasan Gir Safari

Yes, the sighting of wild animals is why most of us visit the forests and National Parks. But apart from this the sheer natural beauty that the landscapes offer is a treasure in itself. The Gir National Park too has a pristine and wild beauty that is so endearing.

In the summer months, the forest is dry, but after the rainy season, the streams and watering holes are full, the trees topped with a green cover, and the animals at their happiest. We visited during the winter months and loved the spectacle that unveiled before us as we embarked upon our Gir National Park Safari.

The teak forests presented a beautiful sight as we weaved through the narrow path that cut across the jungle. The terrain is made up of rocky hills of volcanic origin, and water natural water bodies. Water from seven rivers flows into the Gir forest area. These are the Hiran, Saraswati, Datardi, Shinghoda, Raval, Ghodavadi, and Macchundri. To conserve the waters of these rivers four dams have been constructed.

Panoramic view of Gir National Park

We drove across a beautiful stretch of road that ran parallel to the waters of the Hiran river, close to the Kamleshwar Dam. There is a tall observation tower here that offers spectacular and panoramic views of the Gir National Park.

Wow! What an incredible experience! Life is so funny, you sign up for something that could be dreamy, start to get concerned it won’t happen for you, then get the best experience possible. I’m very jealous and this is going on my list!

It was good that your guide set your expectations about the possibility of not seeing lions. We have had luck on our safaris. But have talked to others that were not so lucky. I do know that feeling you got when you saw a lion on the road you were travelling. So thrilling to watch them walk past. And hoping they ignore you! What a great experience you had.

Oh my goodness! Your description in the beginning was so vivid – I felt like I was right there with you. And you’re right – seeing wild animals in their natural habitat really is beautiful and mesmerizing. What a lovely memory – and such gorgeous creatures.

I can only imagine what this experience must have been like for you! How lucky to have had such a close encounter with the lions–and I’m so glad they kept walking past. They sure made their point, didn’t they? I hung on each word of this story, waiting to learn what would happen in the next moment. Thrilled to see the video of the whole experience, too. Thanks for sharing this exciting moment, as well as all of the other helpful tips about Gir National Park. I’m a huge wildlife fan, so I hope one day to see it for myself.

I’ve never been on a safari before, so for me this is very interesting information. Having such an up-close encounter with the lions must be exciting, but quite intimidating. I had no idea that you can go on a safari two-three times in a row and not see what you came to see. That guy must have been really unlucky. Gir National Park will definitely go up on my list of places to see in India.

A safari is one thing I really would love to do one day but I am just waiting for my two younger children to be a little bit older, but when we do, its going to be amazing. I would love to be as close to the lions like you were. Just to see them staring at you (peacefully I may add) is an experience which you will never forget and this is something I would like to add to my life experiences.

Your experience reminded me of the time many years back when I have faced a number of lions during our open jeep safari in South Africa. It’s quite an experience. Haven’t been to Gir but got a feel through your experience.

that was such an amazing experience. the only time I got to experience a ‘safari’ was when we visited the cebu safari adventure park. It’s not really in the wild. we got to see white lions but it would be amazing if we could see them in the wild too.

Great post!! I have never paid much attention to the wildlife in Gujarat and it seems pretty amazing. The lions in Gujarat seems a bit different than the African lions. I would love to give wildlife in Gujarat a try too.

Wow what an incredible experience and I am glad, unlike your tour guides previous client, you actually got to see lions! I’m yet to go on a safari or even to India so this was very interesting reading. Thanks for sharing your experience 🙂

Thanks for sharing such an informative post about Sasan Gir safari. After reading your entire page thing I liked most is adding an FAQ in the end. Thanks once again.

EXPERIENCE THE TRANQUILITY

Asiatic lions are one of the rarest of all the big cat species in the world. These beasts ranged across the lands of the bible and devoured Christians in Roman arenas. Once found across South Asia from Mesopotamia all the way down to Central India, now they are confined to the dry forests of Gir National Park and Sanctuary making it the last home of the Asiatic Lion.

Gir National Park is located in the erstwhile estate of Junagadh in the Southern part of the North-west Indian state of Gujarat. During the British Raj and East India Company Rule, the kings of princely states across India invited and held hunting expeditions for British Colonists and royal guests. Around the early 1900s, this caused the population to plummet and barely a dozen lions were left in the wild, all of them in Gir. The Asiatic Lion became locally extinct all over India except in Junagadh. The concerns to protect the species rose and the forests of Gir were brought under protection by the Nawab of Junagadh in the second half of the 20th century.

Presently, an estimated population of 523 lions calls an area of 1412 sq. km., their home which comprises the National Park and Sanctuary. But the actual habitat spreads across 4 districts – Junagadh, Somnath, Amreli, and Bhavnagar – covering an area of over 22,000 sq. km.

Talk to us to plan your safari to Gir to see and photograph the last surviving population of Asiatic Lions.

The Experience

Wildlife safaris in Gir National Park are scheduled to take place twice a day, once in the morning and once in the late afternoon. Each session is for around 3 hours. During our previous tours in Gir, we have had 100% success in finding Asiatic Lions. In Sasan Gir, we work with an experienced team of drivers and naturalists whose experiences are key in helping our guests live their dream of photographing Asiatic Lions. From tracking to positioning the vehicles, they are the best in getting you to the right place at the right moment.

Photographing Asiatic Lions in Gir is not so challenging given the fact that the Big Cats are not very shy. During the dry season in Gir, the forests shed their leaves and the visibility improves, further contributing to better wildlife photography and viewing. The Asiatic Lions are comparatively smaller than their African cousins. While tigers and lions don’t co-exist, the park has a healthy population of Leopards. With an extra streak of luck, the rare striped Hyena could be ticked off your list.

Though there are numerous lodges and hotels in Gir, we at The Wildside have partnered with a few lodges in Gir offering top-notch services to our guests. From being located close to the park to having good facilities, our selection of lodges in Gir stands out from the rest. It is the ideal retreat to retire after a long day of safaris in the park. The lodge’s kitchens bring to the table some of the most delicious dishes from the North Indian and Continental cuisine as well. All rooms are air-conditioned with ensuite facilities and some even offer spectacular views of the surrounding forests.

Indian wildlife safari reviews.

I enjoyed my tour through India organised by Holidays At very much despite the train delays due mostly to fog. The local representatives/ drivers were very helpful and their service was appreciated in particular linked to the waiting resulting of the delays for the pick ups and also for the translation Hindi/English. I also appreciated the selection of hotels which Holidays At made for my stay. My focus was on wildlife viewing which I was able to do even though in December/ January you do not have the highest chances to see Tigers. I saw Royal Bengal Tigers on this tour and other wildlife! All in all it was a great tour and I recommend it.
I had to cancel the tour for personal reasons. This review is in praise of the thoughtful and understanding treatment that I received from Sunil at Alkof. He spend a lot of time explaining everything to me before and booked. Then, when I had to cancel, he was sympathetic and refunded my deposit. I've travelled a great deal and there are many tour operators who are untrustworthy. Alkof has shown itself to be honest and reliable.
Our family had a customized tour that included all three national parks for tiger safaris as well as the traditional golden triangle tour. We had 2 different drivers during the tour that picked us up at the airport or drove us to the next location. The drivers were always early, extremely friendly and helpful, and the cars were immaculate. We stayed at six different hotels that were picked out for us. They were all very nice and I would stay at them again. The guides at each location were very knowledgeable and friendly. The company itself stayed in contact with me throughout the trip to make sure I did not need anything. I would highly recommend this company. This tour was much more flexible and convenient than participating in a group tour where everyone has to keep up with a group pace.

The best way to explore the park is to take a safari in a bus or van fitted with mesh screen and spot the majestic lions in their natural habitat. There are more than three lions in the safari park, which is sprawled over an area of 20 acres and bound by a 3-m-high wall. You can also spot pythons and other wild species of reptiles during the safari. Etawah (UP), Jun 25 (PTI) One of the three lion cubs born 25 days ago here in the Etawah Lion Safari Park died on Tuesday, officials said.

On June 1, lioness Neerja had given birth to three cubs, Deputy Director of the Lion Safari Park Dr Vinay Kumar Singh said.

The lioness was not feeding her milk to one of her cubs, leaving it to the staff of the Safari to feed the cub, he said.

According to Singh, the cub had been drinking less milk since June 21 and its health was under monitor.

On Tuesday morning, when the keeper went to feed the cub in the morning, he found it dead.

The cub’s body will be sent to IVRI-Bareilly for a post mortem, the official said.

He said the remaining two cubs are drinking milk and are healthy. PTI COR ABN ABN VN VN

Hyenas attack lioness in an attempt to steal her meal but she fights back. Watch

A pack of hyenas attacked a lioness in an attempt to steal her meal, but she fought back..

Listen to Story

Lioness fights back as hyenas try to steal her meal

  • A lioness was attacked by a pack of hyenas
  • It wasn’t an easy battle as the lioness fought back
  • A wildlife enthusiast recorded the moment in a forest in South Africa

In a forest in South Africa, a lioness was all set to enjoy her meal after a fresh hunt, but her plan did not materialise as she was attacked by a pack of hyenas. Benji Solms, a wildlife professional at the Serondella Safari Lodge, witnessed the battle that ensued between the lioness and hyenas and recorded the incredible footage shared by Latest Sightings on YouTube.

The hyenas were delighted upon spotting the lioness with her big meal, but it wasn’t as easy to snatch her hunt as she decided to fight back.

Soon after the lioness noticed the hyenas, she swiftly hid her meal in a bush nearby. Enraged upon the hyenas’ arrival, the lioness charged at them as the pack scattered, all prepared for a tough fight.

The lioness chased the pack and circled back to her bush. As the hyenas realised that the lioness was all alone and moved in closer, she was greatly outnumbered but continued to fight. As fate would have it, the lion was attacked from all sides, and she had no choice but to escape.

The hyenas, finally, were relieved as the pack did not bother to chase the lioness any further. Once she was gone, their focus shifted immediately to food. They swiftly found the hidden meal and savoured it.

Watch the video here:

That was, most definitely, an incredible battle.

Such wildlife moments are often witnessed in the forests of South Africa. Earlier this month, a safari ranger at the Singita Lebombo Lodge recorded a battle that showed a troop of baboons fighting back as a leopard launched a brutal attack . Published By: Raya Ghosh Published On: Jun 26, 2024

Discover the World’s Largest Lions

A male lion , with its formidable size and flowing mane, is a majestic animal rightfully known as the king of the jungle. Female lions are similarly ferocious and are amongst the most skilled hunters in the animal kingdom. These beautiful yet deadly cats are apex predators that dominate the ecosystems they inhabit.

Lions have been studied extensively and are therefore well understood by scientists. They have been studied both in the wild and in captivity with regards to behavior, biology, and ecological role. Lions are incredibly unique and complex creatures and are considered a keystone species . In architecture, the “keystone” at the top of an arch is what prevents the arch from collapsing. In ecology, a keystone species is one that is necessary for the survival of their ecosystem. If a keystone species became extinct, the balance of their natural environment would collapse. Not only are lions large animals, but they also carry a large ecological role.

In this article we will investigate these beasts and attempt to answer: what is the world’s largest lion , how big can different species get, and what is so big about their role in the environment?

What is the world’s largest lion alive today?

The world’s largest lion ever in the wild reportedly weighed 690 pounds and was shot in South Africa in 1936.

There are two extant subspecies of lions, meaning two subspecies that are not extinct. One subspecies is called Panthera leo leo , which includes Asiatic lions in India and lions found in west and northern central Africa . The second is Panthera leo melanochaita, which includes lions found in southern and eastern Africa . The barbary lion, which lived in north Africa from Morocco to Egypt , was part of the P. leo leo subspecies but became extinct in the 1960s. The Cape lion belonged to the P. leo melanochaita subspecies but became extinct in the wild in the mid-19 th century. Outside of formal taxonomy, lions are often grouped into “Asian lion” and “African lion” categories.

Asiatic lion populations are found only in Gir National Park in India and the surrounding area. From tip of the nose to base of the tail, Asiatic lions are 6.5 feet long. The largest wild Asiatic lion ever recorded was hunted in 1620 and weighed 675 pounds. Typically, however, wild Asiatic lions have a maximum weight of 418 pounds.

A very large wild lion in Africa was observed in Kenya near Mount Kenya. This male African lion was 11 feet long and weighed an incredible 600 pounds! However, as we noted above, there were reports of a lion that weighed 690 pounds, and Guinness Book of World Records has claimed as the largest lion on record. Typically, wild lions have a maximum weight of 496 pounds in southern Africa and 451 pounds in eastern Africa .

What is the largest lion of extinct species?

The largest extinct lion was the American cave lion and may have weighed up to 1,153 pounds!

There are many types of lions that have roamed the earth for hundreds of thousands of years. Two species of prehistoric lions include Panthera atrox , also known as the American cave lion, and Panthera spelaea , also known as the Eurasian cave lion . Both of these species have long been extinct, but they are related to modern lions and were even known to coexist with human ancestors.

The American cave lion inhabited North America between 340,000 and 11,000 years ago. Fossils from this species have been excavated from Alaska to Mexico suggesting it had a large geographical range. Based on fossil evidence, scientists predict that the American cave lion was about 25% larger than modern lions making it one of the largest known cats to ever exist. The estimated maximum length of the American lion from the tip of the nose to the base of the tail is an impressive 8 feet 2 inches. A 2008 study estimated that this lion weighed up to 930 pounds; however, a 2012 study claims males could have weighed up to 1,153 pounds!

The Eurasian cave lion was also larger than modern lions. It lived between 60,000 and 13,000 years ago throughout Europe and Asia . The Eurasian cave lion was smaller than the American cave lion but was still approximately 12% larger than modern lions . Based on fossil findings, the largest Eurasian cave lion was estimated to be 6 feet 11 inches long, not including the tail. The largest specimen ever recovered was determined to have weighed around 750 pounds!

Do ligers count? What is the largest liger on record?

Ligers are the offspring of a male lion and a female tiger . Ligers are the largest of extant felines, however, they are not technically a distinct species. Male ligers are sterile, meaning they are incapable of reproducing. Although female ligers are capable of reproduction, because male and female ligers cannot produce viable offspring together, they are not recognized as a species. Instead, their “species” is denoted as Panthera leo x Panthera tigris (lion male X tiger female).

Ligers are recognized as the largest living cat on earth and greatly exceed their lion parent and tiger parent in size. The largest liger ever was named Hercules and was bred in captivity in 2002. Hercules had an exceptional weight of 922 pounds!

What is the world’s largest lion?

If we consider any lion that has ever lived, including prehistoric species, and do not consider lion hybrids, such as ligers, then the largest lion to have ever lived is the American cave lion. The American cave lion was predicted based on fossil evidence to have weighed up to 1,153 pounds! To put that into perspective, that is approximately the same weight as 115 house cats !

If we only consider lions of currently existing subspecies and include lions in captivity, then the largest lion ever recorded was a male living in Dublin Zoo, Ireland in 1959. This lion weighed a massive 827 pounds making it the largest lion in the world!

What ecological role do lions have?

Lions are classified as a keystone species. This means that they have a disproportionately large impact on their natural environment and are crucial to maintaining the structure of their ecological community. As apex predators, they must exist in order to control the populations of other animals. A lion’s diet consists primarily of wildebeest , zebra , and African buffalo . These animals have only a few other predators and have a diet that consists heavily of savanna grasses . Hypothetically, if lions became extinct , wildebeest, zebra, and African buffalo populations would grow drastically. Large grazing populations would overwhelm their food resources and cause savanna grasses to become scarce. This would have an incredible impact on all plant and animal life in the ecosystem. As an analogy, lions as a keystone species are like the starting domino in a long chain- if they get knocked over, many other pieces will fall behind it.

Currently, many efforts are being made to maintain and restore lion populations. Lions currently have a conservation status of “ vulnerable ” which means they are prone to becoming endangered if there is no intervention. Lions have been threatened primarily by habitat destruction and trophy hunting. It is currently legal to hunt lions including hunting in captivity for sport. Major efforts being made to restore lion populations include breeding in captivity and the close monitoring of wild populations.
