Asiatic lions are one of the rarest of all the big cat species in the world. These beasts ranged across the lands of the bible and devoured Christians in Roman arenas. Once found across South Asia from Mesopotamia all the way down to Central India, now they are confined to the dry forests of Gir National Park and Sanctuary making it the last home of the Asiatic Lion.

Gir National Park is located in the erstwhile estate of Junagadh in the Southern part of the North-west Indian state of Gujarat. During the British Raj and East India Company Rule, the kings of princely states across India invited and held hunting expeditions for British Colonists and royal guests. Around the early 1900s, this caused the population to plummet and barely a dozen lions were left in the wild, all of them in Gir. The Asiatic Lion became locally extinct all over India except in Junagadh. The concerns to protect the species rose and the forests of Gir were brought under protection by the Nawab of Junagadh in the second half of the 20th century.

Presently, an estimated population of 523 lions calls an area of 1412 sq. km., their home which comprises the National Park and Sanctuary. But the actual habitat spreads across 4 districts – Junagadh, Somnath, Amreli, and Bhavnagar – covering an area of over 22,000 sq. km.

Talk to us to plan your safari to Gir to see and photograph the last surviving population of Asiatic Lions.

The Experience

Wildlife safaris in Gir National Park are scheduled to take place twice a day, once in the morning and once in the late afternoon. Each session is for around 3 hours. During our previous tours in Gir, we have had 100% success in finding Asiatic Lions. In Sasan Gir, we work with an experienced team of drivers and naturalists whose experiences are key in helping our guests live their dream of photographing Asiatic Lions. From tracking to positioning the vehicles, they are the best in getting you to the right place at the right moment.

Photographing Asiatic Lions in Gir is not so challenging given the fact that the Big Cats are not very shy. During the dry season in Gir, the forests shed their leaves and the visibility improves, further contributing to better wildlife photography and viewing. The Asiatic Lions are comparatively smaller than their African cousins. While tigers and lions don’t co-exist, the park has a healthy population of Leopards. With an extra streak of luck, the rare striped Hyena could be ticked off your list.

Though there are numerous lodges and hotels in Gir, we at The Wildside have partnered with a few lodges in Gir offering top-notch services to our guests. From being located close to the park to having good facilities, our selection of lodges in Gir stands out from the rest. It is the ideal retreat to retire after a long day of safaris in the park. The lodge’s kitchens bring to the table some of the most delicious dishes from the North Indian and Continental cuisine as well. All rooms are air-conditioned with ensuite facilities and some even offer spectacular views of the surrounding forests.

Additional Info

Reaching gir.

Gir is well connected with a number of airports in the Southern Part of Gujarat. Rajkot, located about 3 hours away from the park has the maximum frequency of domestic flights connecting India’s metro cities. The other airports include Diu, Porbandar and Jamnagar. Ahmedabad (AMD) is the nearest International Airport to Gir National Park.

Gir National Park remains open from October to June and remains closed from July to September due to the monsoon. The park is dense and green when the doors open in Oct0ber. As February draws to an end, the park is dry with increased visibility thus providing a higher possibility of Wildlife Sightings. The summer months of April, May and June are excellent for wildlife viewing as the heat draws all the animals to the remaining pools of water.

VASONA LION SAFARI

Vasona Lion Safari Park is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts. The best way to explore the park is to take a safari in a bus or van fitted with mesh screen and spot the majestic lions in their natural habitat. There are more than three lions in the safari park, which is sprawled over an area of 20 acres and bound by a 3-m-high wall. You can also spot pythons and other wild species of reptiles during the safari. The park is a part of Dadra and Nagar Haveli Wildlife Sanctuary and also shares the neighbourhood with the Satmalia Deer Park. Built with an aim to preserve Asiatic lions, the Lion Safari Park remains open from 9 am to 5 pm and lies at a distance of 10 km from Silvassa.

Gujarat: Lion safaris begin at Girnar sanctuary

Gir National Park and Sanctuary (GNPS) in Sasan village of Junagadh district is the other protected forest area which has a tourism zone and is famous for lion safaris.

india lion safari

A WEEK AFTER Chief Minister Vijay Rupani’s announcement, lion safaris formally began in Girnar Wildlife Sanctuary (GWLS) in Junagadh on Tuesday, making the hilly forest the second protected habitat of Asiatic lions to have a tourism zone.

india lion safari

This is also the second major tourism project to be launched in GWLS after the Girnar temple ropeway inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 24 last year.

The first batch of tourists were flagged off at a low key affair on the Republic Day from Indreshwar Naka, an entry point to the GWLS on its western periphery. In all, total of seven safari vehicles made the 26-km-long round trips on Tuesday and an equal number of them on Wednesday, forest officers said.

“This is not a lion safari per say. This is more of a nature trail. However, tourists did get to see lions on Tuesday,” Sanjay Berwal, Deputy Conservator of Forests (DCF) of Junagadh territorial forest division told The Indian Express on Wednesday.

Festive offer

The safaris will begin from Indreshwar Naka, pass through Jambudi beat and go till Paturan beat before returning on the same route, forest officers said. Officially, these safaris have been termed Girnar Nature Safari and will have only one route. “This is a route on the periphery of the forest. More routes are not possible right now due to hilly terrain,” Berwal further said.

During his visit to Junagadh city on January 20 to lay the foundation stone of a city-wide underground drainage network, CM Rupani had announced that safaris in GWLS would begin soon.

A note of the forest department stated that the main objectives of the nature safaris were to raise public awareness about the benefits of nature and natural sources, to engage people living near Girnar in conservation of GWLS. The note further said that youth from villages falling in the eco-sensitive zone of the sanctuary along the route alignment had been given training of working as tourist guides at Sasan and that tourists will have to pay Rs 400 fee to these guards per trip.

The inauguration comes despite a case challenging the project still pending with the Gujarat High Court. “However, the government has taken a decision to go ahead with the project. As such, there is no express stay on the project by the court,” the DCF said.

The project was to begin in 2019 but was delayed due to the litigation.

When contacted by The Indian Express for a comment, Environment and Forest Minister Ganpat Vasava said that he would seek details about the project and would revert.

Berwal said that the forest department had sanctioned quotas of eight permits per day—four in the morning session and an equal number in the evening session. One permit, on which a maximum of six persons plus a child can go on safari, will cost Rs 800 during weekdays and Rs 1,000 on Saturdays and Sundays. The safaris would happen from 6:45 am to 9:45 am and from 3 pm to 6 pm during October to February and from 6 am to 9 am and 4 pm to 7 pm during March to June. The safaris would remain suspended during the annual Girnar Parikrama (which takes place a few days after Diwali) and Shivrati Fair which is organised in the month of Magh.

Exclusive Tiger Safaris in India

On trails that resonate his roar...

At Tiger Safari India it is our endeavor to provide you with the best tiger safari holidays in India that have learning, adventure, and unlimited memories. We encourage you to store your experiences in form of videos and still photos which you will fondly go over at a later stage in life with friends, families, and your future generations.

While it is easy to capture people, landscapes, and monuments, capturing wildlife involves certain dynamics. The wildlife documentaries by channels are made with painstaking efforts covering months of filming in unhostile terrain, expensive equipment, special permissions from the authorities, weeks of post-production, and a great deal of resources. The end result is a dream setup. But this is not what you always see when you are on a tiger safari .

The videos below are shot by our team during a safari using a regular video camera, in a regular safari vehicle, no tripods, no extra permissions, and importantly during a 3-night stay in a national park. This is how you see tigers during a wildlife safari .

Tiger safaris in India actually happen throughout the year, but it is recommended to plan a safari tour between the cooler months of October and March. Each and every National Park in India has dedicated tiger safari zones that remain open to the public in longer durations.

It is important to plan your tiger safaris in India a good five months in advance, as it will give top tiger tour operators, like Tiger Safari India , ample time to prepare the best possible trip for you.

The Kanha National Park, Bandhavgarh National Park, Ranthambore National Park and Jim Corbett National Park are the four most visited and most popular tiger reserves. Best 7 National Parks for Tiger Safaris in India (Tips & Map)

India is the best place to see wild tigers. It enjoys 70% of the world's tiger population and has over 50 tiger reserves.

If you are a wildlife and nature lover, don't miss a wildlife safari tour in one of India's national parks.

The majestic Bengal tigers are the main stars — one of the top-draw animals for safari-goers, but you will also enjoy an array of other wild animals and the grasslands.

Jeep safaris, the most popular way to see the Bengal tigers in their natural habitat, are available in almost all of the national parks across India.

Read on for more information about tiger safaris in India covering the best national parks, best times, and other tips.

  • Best 7 National Parks for Tiger Safaris

How to Choose a Tiger Safari

A sample india itinerary with a tiger safari, the best time for a tiger safari in india, 1. ranthambore national park — most popular.

Ranthambore National Park is one of the biggest and best national parks for spotting wild tigers and other animals, such as jungle cats and Indian foxes.

It is close to Agra and Jaipur. The convenient location makes it easy to include in a classic golden triangle trip (of Delhi, Agra, and Jaipur).

Moreover, Ranthambore National Park features sparse forest cover and open grassy meadows. A wider and unobstructed view increases the chance of seeing a tiger .

  • How to get there: about 170 km from Jaipur (3½ hours' driving)
  • Location: Rajasthan (a state in northwest India)

2. Kanha National Park — Most Wildlife

Kanha National Park is considered the largest national park in Madhya Pradesh (central India).

if you are interested in seeing more varied wildlife and a scenic jungle landscape, Kanha National Park is a good choice.

The dense forest, which provides good shelter for its tigers, may lead to less chance to spot a tiger.

  • How to get there: 2 hours' flying form Delhi to Swami Vivekananda International Airport and 4½–5 hours' driving from the airport
  • Location: Madhya Pradesh (a state in central India)

3. Bandhavgarh National Park — Highest Density of Tigers

Bandhavgarh National Park is another popular national park for tiger safaris in Madhya Pradesh.

Bandhavgarh National Park offers the best chance of seeing tigers as it has a higher density of tigers. So, it is also a good choice if you are aiming at spotting tigers (and quickly). It is more remotely located than Ranthambhore and Kandha.

Besides Bengal tigers, it boasts a tremendous amount of species like the Indian guar, the world's largest bovine. You can also enjoy a guided walking safari to explore nature (not the tigers!) from up close.

  • How to get there: 1½ hours' flying from Delhi to Jabalpur Airport and 3½–4 hours' driving from the airport
  • Location: Madhya Pradesh (the state in central India)

4. Jim Corbett National Park — Rich Activities

Jim Corbett National Park is India's oldest national park, where you can find every geographical landscape , from marshy swamps to hills, from riverine belts to lakes.

Though it has over 200 tigers, it is not easy to see them in the dense foliage. It is more for wildlife and nature lovers than tiger sightseeing.

It is also the one of the only national parks in India where you have the opportunity to stay inside the park in over-100-year-old forest lodges.

Apart from tiger safaris, you can enjoy other outdoor activities like nature walks, cycling, river rafting, and rope courses.

  • How to get there: about 250 km from Delhi (5 hours' driving)
  • Location: Uttarakhand (a state in central north India)

5. Tadoba National Park — Night Safaris

Satpura National Park is notably Maharashtra's (the state in central west India's) oldest and largest national park.

Tadoba National Park is not as big, but has one of the highest populations of tigers in India . This means you would have a good chance of seeing a tiger.

Tadoba National Park also offers a night safari experience, which allows you to observe nighttime wildlife like rusty-spotted cats, civets, and a variety of owls.

There is also good chance to see the shy sloth bear and wild dogs. You can also find some of the Central India's best native woodland bird species in this forest.

  • How to get there: 1½-2 hours' flying from Delhi to Nagpur and 2½ hours' driving from the airport
  • Location: Maharashtra (a state in central west India)

6. Satpura National Park — Less Crowded

Satpura National Park is a relatively less-crowded park for tiger safaris, so it is no struggle to get safari tickets, except during festivals or New Year weekends.

The tiger population in the park is thought to be around 50, but they are sometimes more elusive. Leopards, gaurs (the largest of oxes), wild dogs, and sloth bears are seen more frequently.

There you can also do a walking safari, canoeing, birding, etc.

  • How to get there: 1½ hours' flying from Delhi to Bhopal Airport and about 3½-4 hours' driving (190 km)

7. Sasan Gir National Park — for Lion Safaris

What makes Gir National Park special is that it is the only place in the world outside Africa where a lion can be seen in its natural habitat.

There you can go on a lion safari by jeep to spot lions roaming free in the wild. You can also see leopards, different species of deer, Chowsingha — the world's only four-horned antelope, jackals, and many other animals, though no tigers.

  • How to get there: about 2 hours' flying from Delhi to Rajkot Airport and about 2 hours' driving (100 km)
  • Location: Gujarat (westernmost state in India)

There are three main factors you should consider when choosing a park for a tiger safari — the ease of getting there, the possibility of seeing a tiger, and the scenery of the park.

Bandhavgarh National Park, Ranthambore National Park, and Tadoba National Park will give you a better chance to see a tiger. Among them, Ranthambore is most recommended as it is easier to get to.

If you'd enjoy dense forest scenery more than the sighting of a tiger in open grassland scenery, with rivers, lush greenery, and other outdoor activities, Jim Corbett National Park, Kanha National Park, and Satpura National Park could be better choices for you.

If you would like a uniquely special experience (and if you are already in the Gujarat area of west India), an Indian lion safari in Sasan Gir National Park may be perfect for you.

We can help you book a tiger safari tour and arrange the transport for you. Just contact us .

For first-timers, the classic route with a tiger safari includes Delhi, Agra, Jaipur, and Ranthambore National Park, covering India's most iconic monuments and mesmerizing landscapes with a search for wild tigers on the way.

The trip usually takes about 9 days. Here is the sample itinerary:

  • Days 1–2: Delhi sightseeing (the iconic temples, tombs, and local markets)
  • Days 3–4: Head to Agra; Agra sightseeing (the Taj Mahal, baby Taj, Agra Fort)
  • Day 5: Drive from Agra to Ranthambore; see the abandoned Mughal city of Fatehpur Sikri on the way
  • Day 6: A tiger safari in Ranthambore National Park
  • Days 7–8: Head to Jaipur; Jaipur sightseeing (the ancient palaces and a cooking class)
  • Day 9: Back to Delhi for your departure

If you are interested in the itinerary, check out our 9-Day India Golden Triangle with Tiger Safari Tour for more details. You can also contact us for any questions or needs. All our tours can be adjusted to your requirements.

Most national parks are open from mid-October to June and are closed during the monsoon season from July to early October.

For those who are especially interested in a tiger safari , the best time to visit the national parks is from April to June . This is due to drier weather conditions, making it easier for you to have the chance to spot the tigers, as they come out searching for water.

The cooler months from late November to February are the most comfortable time to visit, with pleasant midday temperatures, but vegetation remains dense and can make wildlife spotting challenging.

india lion safari

Wildlife safaris not only offer unparalleled adventure, but also allow one to experience intimate encounters with the planet's most extraordinary wildlife and terrains. Across the globe, there are several destinations renowned for their exceptional safari experiences, each offering unique landscapes and diverse wildlife. If you also love this activity, here are some of the world's biggest wildlife safari destinations to bookmark.

Kruger National Park, South Africa

Kruger National Park stands as an icon in the world of wildlife safaris. Spanning nearly two million hectares in northeastern South Africa, Kruger is home to an extraordinary variety of wildlife, including the famed Big Five—lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard, and rhinoceros. Visitors can explore the park through guided game drives, walking safaris, or self-drives, immersing themselves in the breathtaking landscapes and abundant wildlife sightings.

Maasai Mara National Reserve, Kenya

The Maasai Mara National Reserve in Kenya is synonymous with the annual Great Migration, where millions of wildebeest, zebras, and other herbivores cross the Mara River in search of greener pastures. Apart from this spectacle, the Maasai Mara offers exceptional game viewing throughout the year, with lions, cheetahs, elephants, and giraffes roaming its vast plains. Hot air balloon safaris provide a unique perspective, offering panoramic views of the savannah teeming with wildlife.

Serengeti National Park, Tanzania

Adjacent to the Maasai Mara, Tanzania's Serengeti National Park is another hotspot for witnessing the Great Migration. This expansive savannah landscape is home to an incredible diversity of wildlife, including large herds of plains game and predators such as lions, leopards, and hyenas. Visitors can enjoy game drives, guided walks, and cultural experiences with the Maasai people, adding depth to their safari adventure.

Chobe National Park, Botswana

Chobe National Park in Botswana is renowned for its massive elephant population, and also serves as the home to the highest concentrations of these majestic creatures in Africa. The Chobe Riverfront offers spectacular game viewing opportunities, with elephants, hippos, crocodiles, and various bird species congregating along the water's edge. Boat safaris provide a unique perspective, allowing visitors to observe wildlife from the tranquility of the river.

Ranthambore National Park, India

Ranthambore National Park is one of India's premier tiger reserves, offering a chance to encounter these elusive big cats in their natural habitat. Set amid the Aravali and Vindhya mountain ranges, Ranthambore is also home to leopards, sloth bears, and a diverse array of birdlife. Jeep safaris and guided nature walks offer opportunities for up-close wildlife encounters while exploring the park's picturesque landscapes.

Yala National Park, Sri Lanka

Yala National Park is Sri Lanka's premier wildlife destination, renowned for its dense population of leopards. Located in the southeast region of the island, Yala is also home to elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles, and a diverse range of bird species. The park's varied landscapes, including scrublands, forests, and coastal lagoons, provide a rich habitat for wildlife. Safari excursions offer the opportunity to spot elusive leopards and other iconic animals amidst the breathtaking scenery. With its combination of natural beauty and abundant wildlife, Yala National Park offers an unforgettable safari experience in Sri Lanka.

This Safari Company Has 9 All-inclusive Camps That Let You See the Best of Botswana by Foot, Boat, and Jeep

I visited three Desert & Delta lodges for one epic adventure. Here's how to craft your dream Botswana itinerary.

Nina Ruggiero is Travel + Leisure's senior editorial director and the co-founder of Be A Travel Writer , an online course for aspiring travel journalists. A New Yorker based in Los Angeles, she has a special interest in beach destinations, outdoor adventures, unique hotels, pet-friendly travel with her golden retriever, @travelswithcali, and all things Italy.

Camp Moremi

Camp okavango, chobe game lodge.

Nina Ruggiero / Travel + Leisure

It was day four of our trip to Botswana with Desert & Delta, and my fiancé and I were on our first safari by mokoro , a traditional dug-out canoe. Gliding quietly through the Okavango Delta in our sunken seats, it felt like we were the only people on the planet — until we turned the bend and caught a glimpse of our next surprise through the reeds.

The staff of Camp Okavango, already fast friends of ours, stood ankle-deep in the river, grinning and waving their arms in the air, excited to show us the full bar they’d set up for sundowners, right in the middle of the water. As the sun started to set and they handed us our gin and tonics, an elephant appeared, perfectly on cue.

Nina Ruggiero / Travel + Leisure

Most evenings, our guide, Isak, took a “wrong turn” that ended with a cheeky smile and stunning cocktail setup in an impossibly remote spot, yet somehow we found ourselves truly surprised each time. Add in the serendipitous cooperation of the local wildlife, and you have a recipe for pure magic that couldn’t be replicated in the world’s best bars.

That element of surprise kept us on a natural high all week long — with credit due to the human and non-human animals in almost equal measure. On day one, we laughed when Isak told us his favorite safari animal was the human. By the end, while I was personally still torn between lions and elephants, humans had moved far up my list.

At Camp Okavango, we crossed the path of a lion while touring the bush on foot, got an overview of Nxaragha Island from a doorless helicopter, and went fishing downstream from a herd of hippos. At Camp Moremi, we started our mornings with families of monkeys, caught a majestic elephant water crossing, and watched the circle of life unfold as lions and lionesses took turns ravaging their prey. At Chobe Game Lodge, we marveled at spirited elephant calves splashing around while their elders protected them from crocs, and excitedly tracked little roars to find lion cubs playing at dusk. Leading each experience was a guide with encyclopedia-like knowledge that wowed us and enthusiasm that fueled our childlike wonder.

A 40-year-old company with nine camps and lodges that touch Botswana’s Chobe National Park, Makgadikgadi Pans National Park, Moremi Game Reserve, Okavango Delta, Savuti Channel, and more, Desert & Delta offers safaris by jeep, foot, and boat. Guests have the chance to mix and match camps to form their dream Botswana itinerary, or they can choose from curated all-inclusive packages . With more than 40 percent of its land dedicated to conservation, it’s difficult to beat Botswana as a safari destination — it’s home to eight game reserves, four national parks, and the largest African elephant population in the world. And there may be no better way to see the best of the country on one trip than going with Desert & Delta.

Within minutes of our bush plane landing near Camp Moremi , we encountered a new type of traffic as a journey of giraffes crossed in front of us, swiftly reminding us we weren't in Los Angeles anymore. The camp's location inside Moremi Game Reserve means the safari starts before you even check in. We arrived on property — a few hours late after begging to continue the game drive — and found 12 thatched tents, rebuilt in 2018 with canopied beds, private decks, and rain showers made of stone and wood. Cozy common areas included a bush-side fire pit deck, a pool, a library lounge, and a bar built around an ebony tree. We had many group meals at the long, wooden tables in the thatch-roofed dining room, and one romantic, private candlelit dinner on the deck.

On our November trip, morning and afternoon game drives through Moremi Game Reserve were where we found the majority of our animal sightings in Botswana, including lions, zebra, hippos, elephants, giraffes, wildebeest, and more. It’s also possible to see leopards, cheetahs, and wild dogs. Steps from camp, we hopped on a motorized boat and explored the channels of the Xakanaxa Lagoon, where we spotted birds of all colors and sizes, an elephant taking a swim, and an unforgettable red sunset.

Located on a remote island in the Okavango Delta, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Camp Okavango feels like a secret hideaway. It holds 12 suites connected by a wooden boardwalk and surrounded by lush vegetation. Views of the surrounding wilderness from the dining room and pool deck below are completely different and equally beautiful as the day shifts from morning to night. For adventurous guests, there’s also a sleep-out deck with an immaculate bedroom and bathroom on a raised platform under the stars.

At Camp Okavango, safaris are by boat (motorized and mokoro), on foot (with two protective guides), or by helicopter (for an additional fee). There are no vehicles there, but as we cruised the delta past hippos and elephants, made eye contact with a vigilant mother giraffe on foot, and paused to let a shy family of warthogs scurry by us, we didn’t miss the Jeep.

A true luxury lodge and the only permanent game lodge within Chobe National Park, it’s not hard to see why Chobe Game Lodge has attracted the likes of Prince Harry and Elizabeth Taylor, who wed Richard Burton there (for the second time) in 1975. The Lodge has 44 rooms, all looking out over the Chobe River, four of them with private plunge pools. With elegant dining areas and bars, a scenic boardwalk, and a billiard room, it’s easy to unwind between game drives and boat tours.

Here, all guides are female — a training program for women has been running since 2005 — and innovations in ecotourism have been recognized by the Botswana Tourism Organisation. Safaris are run via electric vehicles in the park and electric boats on the river, both gentle on the environment and offering a quiet approach that helps guests observe animals up close. Each day, we looked forward to boarding our boat with our guide, Miss B., and watching elephant families revel in their time at the watering hole, often coexisting with lions, hippos, and crocodiles on one incredibly lively riverbank.

A refurbished Nxamaseri Island Lodge reopened in May, and it now hosts Desert & Delta's first wellness spa. Guests are gifted a complimentary treatment and escorted to the spa by water in a mokoro. A new pool also looks over the Nxamaseri Channel.

Rebuilt and reopening in June for the 2024 safari season, Savute Safari Lodge now has 12 contemporary, temperature-controlled rooms with outdoor showers and Savute Channel views, plus indoor and outdoor dining, a pool, and a sunken wildlife viewing area that puts guests at eye level with the animals.

For a totally off-the-grid experience, guests of Desert & Delta's Leroo La Tau lodge between June and October can book a Makgadikgadi Salt Pan sleep-out to dine by an open fire immersed in nature and sleep on a rollout bed under the endless night sky. Leroo La Tau is also the best place to see a massive zebra migration — and it was refurbished with migration viewing in mind in 2023.

Lion almost walks past its prey moments before brutal attack

  • A lion almost walked past its prey moments before launching a brutal attack
  • A safari guide in Tanzania recorded the nail-biting scenario
  • Every scenario that unfolded, as seen in the footage, will make you hold your breath

A safari guide at Maswa Game Reserve in Tanzania witnessed a terrifying sight as a lion walked past its prey moments before launching a brutal attack. Manja Kema recorded the scenario and shared the nail-biting video with Latest Sightings as every scenario that unfolded will make you hold your breath.

One morning in the Serengeti, a wildebeest was enjoying a nap in the wild grass all alone while its herd wasn’t seen in the surroundings. Also called gnu, wildebeests are antelopes of the genus Connochaetes and are native to Eastern and Southern Africa.

Soon after, Manja spotted one of the resident male lions on his morning patrol, as it headed towards the wildebeest for sure but was unaware of its presence. “Male lions often patrol their territories to ensure their family's safety and to scent mark their boundaries, which lets other lions know the space is occupied,” Latest Sightings reports.

The lion walked in and around the area where the wildebeest was napping but still couldn’t understand that his prey was near owing to the long grass. The next moment, though, he picked up a scent in the air and figured that his prey was in the vicinity.

As for the wildebeest, unfortunately, it was unaware that death was near. The lion sniffed and followed the trail in a moment when the wildebeest realised that something was wrong. In vain, though, because it was too late.

“Finally, the wildebeest realised something was off, but it was much too late. The calf had been perfectly still until it sensed the danger right in front of it. Then, for some reason, it decided to shake its head—perhaps to scare the lion off. Whatever the intention, it didn't work, it only alerted the lion to its exact location,” Latest Sightings reports.

The wildebeest attempted to escape but to no avail as the lion pounced on it, causing his brother to notice the struggle. He joined the other lion as both brothers enjoyed their meal together.

That’s such a chilling scenario captured in the Serengeti ecosystem, which is a geographical region in Africa, spanning the Mara and Arusha Regions of Tanzania.

I went on a 2-week safari in South Africa's famous Kruger National Park for just $50 a day

  • I went on an epic two-week safari in South Africa's famous Kruger National Park for about $50 a day.
  • I camped beneath the stars and saw elephants right from my tent.
  • Driving our own car, camping, and preparing our own food saved us money.

Insider Today

The idea of a South African safari often conjures up images of five-star lodges and luxury game drives — but a holiday in the bush doesn't have to be out of reach for travelers on a tighter budget.

According to a data analysis from Go2Africa , the average traveler heads on South African safaris with a medium-high budget, meaning they spend $5,500 to $6,000 on a trip, an increase from last year.

But, on a recent trip, I found that I was able to have an incredible two-week safari trip in Kruger National Park for about $50 a day.

Here's how I did it and how travelers can save money when planning their safari.

I saved by buying an annual pass

The biggest savings at Kruger National Park can come from buying a Wild Card, an annual pass that gives you a year of access to 80+ parks in southern Africa, including Kruger.

The Wild Card is discounted for South Africans but it cost me 3,780 rands, or about $200, as a foreigner.

Without a Wild Card, I would've had to pay over 486 rands a day to visit Kruger, meaning this pass pays for itself in just over a week.

Overall, my pass came to about 270 rands a day for the two-week trip.

We also stayed in one of Kruger's many rest camps

One of the most immersive ways to experience Kruger is by camping in the South African bush. We saw elephants near our camp and woke up to the sounds of warthogs and hyenas in the distance.

We live in South Africa , so it was easy enough to bring our own camping gear, though travelers can rent a tent, sleeping bags, chairs, and cooking basics from nearby rental companies for a few thousand rands for two weeks.

Kruger National Park has a range of rest camps for different budgets and preferences, whether you prefer to use your own tent or stay in a bungalow with your own kitchen and bathroom.

Related stories

Prices also vary depending on the season, so it's wise to avoid really busy months, like September and December. I found that around mid-January to mid-March, two people can camp at Punda Maria, one of Kruger's cheapest camping options, for just 285 rands a night. During high season, prices go up by about 100 rands per night.

My husband and I visited during a less busy season. We camped at Maroela Satellite Camp and Crocodile Bridge Rest Camp for 331 to 349 rands a night.

Cooking our own food saved us money …

We chose to prepare our own meals and braai (a type of South African barbecue) beneath the stars.

Fortunately, most campsites have plug points, braai stands, shared bathrooms, shared kitchens, and shops selling everything you need to braai.

The park also has restaurants and coffee shops scattered throughout it, which is helpful for anyone who wants to purchase food and drinks without leaving the property.

But there's nothing quite like braaiing beneath the stars, watching for the occasional hyena along the fence line.

… and so did doing a self-driving safari

If you don't have your own car, you can rent a sedan for just over 4,000 rands for two weeks. Fortunately, though, there are enough tarred roads in Kruger that you don't need a special 4x4 to enjoy the park.

We ended up self-driving our own car in Kruger National Park, which allowed us to choose our own adventure and be our own guide.

Rest camps have sighting boards on which visitors pin their major animal sightings from that day and the previous day. This makes it easy to follow trends and choose where to search first. There's also an app where visitors post their sightings.

On our last self-drive safari in Kruger, we saw cheetahs and all the Big Five (leopard, elephant, rhino, lion, and African buffalo).

Overall, our trip was affordable and dreamy

We saved money throughout our trip and managed to go on a two-week safari in Kruger National Park for just under $50 a day per person.

This price includes two Wild Cards, petrol for our vehicle, and our camping fees and expenses — and our trip was well worth it.
