Guster Announce We Also Have Eras Tour

Guster Announce We Also Have Eras Tour

Guster announced a tour set for the spring of 2024 that will culminate in a CD release party for their upcoming album in Boston. The theme of the tour was inspired by Taylor Swift’s recent Eras Tour and is touted as the We Also Have Eras tour. During their travels, the band will showcase songs from their 32 years, and like Swift’s record-breaking shows will feature costume changes.

The run kicks off in Austin, Texas, on March 7 at the ACL Live, and each night, the band will chronologically perform their music, beginning with their first album, Parachute . “‘We Also Have Eras’ is a big chronological journey through our music, with theatrical skits, costume changes, Guster rarities, and probably a lot of moments where we keel over laughing at ourselves for attempting something like this in our 50s. Luke is still in his 40s, we know,” the band wrote on Instagram. “Inspired by @taylorswift ’s own eras tour, but with much bigger hits, this’ll be a marathon concert, an ‘evening with Guster’ (which means no opener), except in Brooklyn and Boston where we’ll be joined by @fruit_bats .”

Following the Austin kick-off, Guster will traverse through the souths with a set on March 8 in Dallas at the Granada Theater, a March 9 show at The Heights Theater in Houston and an evening in Oklahoma City on March 10, where they take the stage at The Jones Assembly. After a two-day break, the band will play at the Madrid Theatre in Kansas City, Mo., on March 13. Following that, Guster will take the stage in St. Louis on March 15 at The Pageant and then travel to Atlanta on March 16 to perform at The Eastern. The first half of their tour will conclude in Orlando, Fla., at The Plaza Live on March 17.

After a short pause, Guster will play in Saxapahaw, N.C., on March 20 at the Haw River Ballroom. Next, the band will play at the Newport Music Hall in Columbus, Ohio, on March 22 and will follow that up with a show at Rams Head Live! in Baltimore on March 23. The next night, on March 24, they will head to Buffalo, N.Y., to perform at the Town Ballroom. On March 26, Guster will play at the Count Basie Center for the Arts in Red Bank, N.J., and then head to XL Live in Harrisburg, Pa., on March 27.

The penultimate show of the tour will be in Brooklyn, N.Y., on March 29 when the band plays at the Brooklyn Paramount Theater for the first of two performances with the Fruit Bats. Guster’s final show of the tour will be on March 30 in their hometown of Boston at MGM Music Hall at Fenway, also with Fruit Bats. Notably, at this concert, the band will play through the entirety of their upcoming album and will allow the fans to get their hands on a copy of the CD before it is officially released. Tickets go on sale on Dec. 15 at 12 p.m. local time. For tickets or more information, check out Guster’s website here .

One of the best shows I ve ever seen!

Guster is a nice band but the show they've put was quite amazing!

Maybe it had to do with the fact that it was their last show on the tour.

Fantastic show! Not only doing a show, but then following it up with doing the Lost and Gone album in its entirety was wonderful. They are always entertaining live and put on a good show. This album is very tied into my life so being able to hear it in full live is a once in a lifetime experience.

This was our fist time at the venue, and even as 'standing only' for GA it was a great time. I recommend hitting up Punchline across the street before the show for some drinks and small bites.

An incredible evening! Although Ryan was under the weather (having recounted a very entertaining adventure about getting a steroid shot the day of the show in order to sing) he still managed to give it his all and sounded amazing. Every time I see these guys live, I'm blown away, and this was no exception. Ryan came out into the crowd and walked across the armrests of the row in front, and we also got to hear a song about a single piece of confetti. Love these guys, can't wait for them to come back through NY again.

Guster announces “Lost & Gone Forever Ten Year Anniversary Tour”

Ten years have passed since the band’s critically acclaimed release of Lost and Gone Forever which in their words “helped us graduate from our van to a bus”. These nine very special evenings with Guster will include two sets, one of which will be the album in its entirety and no opening act.

Guster has specially chosen each venue as they have historical significance to the group. Higher Ground in Vermont (now in new location) was where they launched the original “Lost & Gone Forever” tour. Ten years ago at the Orpheum, in Boston, Guster put on an epic Halloween show wearing tuxes and pretending it was New Year’s Eve, Y2K. The Beacon in New York harkens back to a time when they played Thanksgiving Weekend in NYC five years in a row.

Tickets for these shows will go on sale this Friday, July 17th. Ticket purchases are available at Ticket Master and Live Nation :

Still keeping it together: Guster brings milestones, music to Columbia show

Twenty years ago, Guster learned to play the sound of its future.

The indie band kept bumping against the limits of a sound it cultivated after founding members Adam Gardner, Ryan Miller and Brian Rosenworcel met at Tufts University near Boston.

Unshakable elements fit into place: lyrics shot through with bent romance and black comedy, folk guitars wrapped around hungover McCartney melodies, and all the percussion Rosenworcel could handle — quite literally playing with exposed palms, earning him the affectionate nickname "Thundergod" from fans.

Standing on that bedrock sound, Guster delivered an opening triptych of charismatic, often genuinely moving albums. Approaching its fourth effort, “Keep it Together,” the band needed something more, to bend its music into new shapes, toward other sources of light.

"Keep it Together" arrived in summer 2003 with songs immediately worthy of this anniversary, making promises every subsequent Guster album would keep.

Gems housed within include "Amsterdam," a reflection on losing yourself and leaving someone else to pick up the pieces led by a killer bassline; "Homecoming King," the sound of a Richard Linklater film distilled into three minutes and 37 seconds; and two deserving additions to the vast canon of pop songs bearing women's names, "Diane" and "Ramona."

Perhaps the most complete composition in the Guster catalog, "Come Downstairs and Say Hello" is our finest song about self-medicating with late-night TV. (The second-finest, "Dear Valentine," came with the next Guster record, 2006's "Ganging Up on the Sun.")

This landmark summer, Guster brings the full weight of its experience to a Summerfest date in Rose Park — what the band knew before "Keep it Together," everything it's learned since. The show also forms a personal marker, a sort of second home-coming for Rosenworcel.

Meeting the moment on 'Keep it Together'

To hear Rosenworcel tell it, Guster keeps a healthy relationship with such milestones, neither overselling them nor sloughing them off.

"I’m someone who really enjoys revisiting the people and the songs and the whole process and being like 'Whoa, I can’t believe we did it that way,' " he said in a recent interview.

The band also fully appreciates the hold records like "Keep it Together" have on listeners.

"For a lot of people, the album that you discovered is the album that stays in your heart," Rosenworcel said.

The record's biography includes relative self-indulgence, eager experimentation and a young band doing perhaps too much to become the truest version of itself, he said.

"Keep it Together" followed 1999's "Lost and Gone Forever," a record shepherded by producer Steve Lillywhite (U2, Dave Matthews Band), which brought radio play with cuts like "Fa Fa," nudging Guster into the TV talk show spotlight.

Rosenworcel recalls the record fondly, a true document of the band's live dynamic to that point.

"Once it was captured and once it was achieved, in our minds, there was no reason to do it again," he said.

Inspired by bands such as The Flaming Lips, Yo La Tengo and Mercury Rev, Guster sought musical symmetry between its acoustic bonafides and digital ornaments.

"So we got Yo La Tengo’s producer (Roger Moutenot, who co-produced with Ron Aniello), and we learned all these new instruments, and we were like 'Let’s be cool now,' " Rosenworcel said.

"Keep it Together" found the band working with Pro Tools software for the first time, integrating keyboards and bass guitar and turning up Rosenworcel's personal degree of difficulty; it's the first album featuring him on drum set.

"Even while touring on ‘Keep it Together,’ I really didn’t know how to play a kit. I didn’t take any lessons ... learned in front of big crowds, big crowds who were not into it. 'Why are you doing this?' " he said, recounting the vibe.

The album set a standard; going forward, a lush, layered style would become the expectation, not a grand experiment, Rosenworcel said.

"We didn’t achieve Yo La Tengo cool, but we definitely expanded our sound and opened ourselves up to what was possible," he said.

Symphonic Guster

Today, Guster travels as a four-piece, at the very least; multi-instrumentalist Luke Reynolds entered the fold a dozen years ago.

But Guster also avails itself of sound opportunities to perform with orchestral backing. In 2020, the band released "OMAGAH!," a live collaboration with the Omaha Symphony, and remains committed to the aesthetic.

Rosenworcel welcomes the challenge — and the particular bounds placed on him as a drummer. On outdoor dates, such as with the Colorado Symphony at Red Rocks, Thundergod can let it rip. Inside a concert hall with, say, the Boston Pops, dynamics mean everything.

"I’m aware, when I’m in there, that the best-sounding songs are going to be the ones without drums," Rosenworcel said.

Guster songs inherently crave these musical colors. With an orchestra, "Come Downstairs and Say Hello" becomes a 21st-century Aaron Copland jam; arrangements of songs like "Long Night" introduce countermelodies band members wish they'd written, Rosenworcel said.

Hearing these dear songs embodied by world-class musicians is pure pleasure for Rosenworcel and his mates.

"We’ll get emotional. There’s power in strings. There’s power in the charts that are written," he said.

From 'Look Alive' to the future

2019's "Look Alive," Guster's most recent record, "was almost intentionally over-produced and almost used over-production as an art form," Rosenworcel said.

Traces of Brian Eno and George Harrison suffuse the set and tracks like "Don't Go" represent "our impression of ABBA," Rosenworcel said.

A bold, beautiful range characterizes "Look Alive," from the sad-eyed and resilient "Terrified" to the instantly memorable "Overexcited"; on the latter song, Miller adopts the accent of a romantic British hooligan before opening into one of Guster's most effusive choruses yet.

"I think as we get older, we’re putting attention on the feel, which has been long overdue after so many years of having melody be king," Rosenworcel said, describing both the album and the greater Guster project.

"Melody is still king in our band, but we’re trying to do the other things too."

This re-orientation doesn't mean gleeful overreach is now the Guster way. Examining the new batch of "10 songs that we’re getting ready to call an album," Rosenworcel said the sparsest moments have been sweetest this time around.

Keeping relationships together — in the band and in Columbia

Relationships propel Rosenworcel on his way to Columbia — in more ways than one.

His wife, Megan Poe, grew up here and the couple married just outside Columbia. Her father, Richard, is a local golf legend, coaching the Missouri Tigers from 1977-1998. Rosenworcel and Poe held the dinner after their rehearsal at iconic burger joint Booches, and he returns to Columbia for holidays and other less-musical reasons.

"I’m part of the Columbia scene," he said with a clear grin in his voice.

Of course, the strength of Guster's bonds keeps the band, well, together. They represent the very ideal of what a college band can become — ever-evolving creativity rooted in decades-long friendship.

Naming his bandmates, Rosenworcel keyed in on just a few of their gifts. Reynolds, he said, brings crucial energy into the studio. "Keep it Together" reminds him of all the inventive guitar parts Gardner has written, lines that pushed the band to meet him along a higher plane.

"I always marvel at what Ryan is capable of when everything clicks," he said of Miller. "... When it all clicks, every lyric is art."

Guster plays Rose Park at 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 5 with Johanna Samuels. Tickets are $31-$36. Visit https://rosemusichall.com/ for details.

Guster Announce New Album; Release First Song/Video; Announce "We Also Have Eras Tour"

Article contributed by big hassle media | published on wednesday, february 28, 2024.

guster tour opening act

Guster is proud to announce their eagerly awaited new album, Ooh La La , available Friday, May 17 via Ocho Mule Records. Pre-orders are available now.

Guster’s ninth studio album and first new LP in more than five years, Ooh La L a is heralded by today’s premiere of the stunning first single, “Keep Going,” available everywhere now. An official music video premieres today on the official Guster YouTube channel. With its luminous harmonies and gauzy guitar tones, “Keep Going” serves as a lovely encapsulation of the new album’s emotional undercurrent, telegraphing an irrepressible joy in the face of turmoil and unrest.

“Most of these songs were written against the backdrop of what felt like an apocalypse,” says Guster lead vocalist/guitarist/bassist Ryan Miller. “It was such a transformative time, and we were dealing with a lot of existential questions about what it means to be a father, a husband, a creative person in the midst of all the chaos.”

“One thing we’ve continually done as a band is acknowledge what’s going on in our world but still bring some positivity to the music,” says guitarist/vocalist Adam Gardner. “We’re always going to be real about what’s happening, but we still want to leave people with a feeling of hope.”

Another new song, "All Day," is also available today on all digital services. A lyric video is streaming now as well.

PRE-ORDER OOH LA LA

Mainly produced by Josh Kaufman (The National, The Hold Steady) at Woodstock, NY’s Isokon Studio, Ooh La La marks a bold departure from its predecessor, 2019’s acclaimed Look Alive. This time, Guster has carved out a lush and acclaimed expansive sound rich in acoustic guitars and graceful piano work. With additional production from Ron Aniello (Bruce Springsteen) and Rich Costey (Death Cab for Cutie, Of Monsters and Men), Ooh La La radiates an undeniable warmth, even as its songs delve into the more daunting aspects of modern life.

“When I listen back to the album now it feels like there’s depth everywhere,” says drummer Brian Rosenworcel. “There’s not a moment where we strike a chord that isn’t meaningful to us. Nobody was going to accept a song that didn’t hit at a certain level, and it feels good to still have that passion more than 30 years into our career.”

“We feel lucky that we’ve created a dynamic where there’s no real separation between us and our fans,” says Gardner. “We’re all part of a community, and it’s theirs just as much as it’s ours.”

“One of the main reasons we’re still a band is the fans who’ve come to see us for years,” adds Miller, “the people who show us the tattoos they’ve gotten with our lyrics. It inspires us to stay creative and stay fearless, instead of just making the same record over and over. Everything we do is in service of that connection, and at this point I’d say we’re definitely lifers.”

Concert Review: Guster’s We Also Have Eras Tour

Screenshot 2024-03-16 at 1.10.36 AM

By Ryan Nims // Back in the late 90s, in the days before social media, I was a Guster Rep; my Guster Rep codename was Motormouth. As a Rep, I would purchase stacks of CDs from the band at wholesale price, which I could then resell and pocket the profits. It seemed like a good gig for a college student, right? In truth, though, I’m not sure I sold even one CD. I just gave them away to people. I loved Guster so much I just wanted people to hear the music, I wasn’t in it for the money.

This was one of Guster’s early eras; to celebrate their more than 30 years as a band—and 30 years since the debut album Parachute was released—Guster is taking to the road for their retrospective “We Also Have Eras” tour, which kicked off at ACL Live in Austin on March 7th.

My rare copy of Gus’s Parachute signed by all original members

I’ve been a fan through pretty much all of the band’s eras; this was my fourth time seeing them live: I snuck my two brothers and myself backstage to meet the band at Stubb’s in 2003, took my wife to see them again at Stubb’s in 2011, and my brother Adam and friend James caught the tour opener last year at the Granada Theater in Dallas. Adam and James also joined me in experiencing this year’s tour opener.

Upon entering the venue, we were greeted with a dorm room at Tufts University, which would be the set for the first of many skits the band would perform that covered certain band highlights. In the case of the dorm, the original members of the band, then simply known as Gus–vocalists/guitarists Ryan Miller & Adam Gardner, and bongo player Brian “Thundergod” Rosenworcel–played entirely acoustic performances of a couple of songs off of Parachute: the album’s namesake and “Happy Frappy.” Next, the set changed to a tour van, and the band performed “Demons” and “Airport Song” from their follow-up album Goldfly .

The concert more or less progressed in this way: short funny skits, costume changes, or in some cases original Broadway-style songs to introduce the next album or meaningful milestone in the band’s career. That time Adam confronted Brian about finding drumsticks on the tour bus (gasp!). Or when Ryan discovered the bass guitar. Thundergod singing his own song bemoaning the fact that although former supporting acts such as John Mayer and Maroon 5 have won Grammys, Guster has yet to win one. Multi-instrumentalist Luke Reynolds (formerly of the band Blue Merle , a member of Guster since 2010) played both himself and earlier band member Joe Pisapia. The band’s drum tech David Butler acted as the narrator for the skits, as well as playing the parts of producer Steve Lillywhite (U2, Talking Heads, etc) and puppeteer for an evil music executive, in an especially funny little skit. Dave even got his own song.

Between the eras of 2006’s Ganging Up On The Sun , and 2010’s Easy Wonderful , the concert went into a 12-minute intermission, during which a slide show was played celebrating people who have worked with Guster in the studio, on tour, or personal friends and family.

“Instagram moment!”

Following the intermission, the band played songs from Easy Wonderful , Evermotion , Look Alive , and a couple of brand new songs from the upcoming album, Ooh La La , finishing with the 2003 classic “Come Downstairs and Say Hello.” After that, Ryan announced that was their last song, but that they’d be back in about 45 seconds to do the encore. The stage was then set up to look like a campfire, and the band came back out and played “Happier” and “Amsterdam.”

The show was an incredibly fun time, full of music, comedy, costume changes, and some fourth-wall-breaking humor. The “We Also Have Eras” tour is currently running through the Midwest on the way to the East Coast. The end of the tour will culminate in a hometown album release show in Boston.

Show Review: Guster Journeys Through Their Eras at MGM Music Hall

Photography by Sofia Giarrusso (photo 1) & Campbell Parish (photos 2-6)

By Sofia Giarrusso , Staff Writer

Artist: Guster

Venue: MGM Music Hall at Fenway

When: Saturday, March 30th

WELCOME TO “GUSTERTOWN, USA”

Saturday night saw an eager crowd at Fenway’s MGM Music Hall in anticipation of the closing show of Guster ’s “We Also Have Eras” Tour . Admittedly a spin on Taylor Swift ’s successful “Eras Tour,” Guster promised to deliver a comprehensive and chronological look into their over 30-year history as a band, and they did not disappoint. The night was full of singing, cheering and laughs as the band took the crowd through a two-and-a-half-hour setlist of 28 songs. This, intermingled with skits, visual gags, an abundance of costume changes and even drummer Brian Rosenworcel in flight!

Guster has accumulated a strong cult fan base throughout their career, and there is nowhere better than Boston to witness this adoring community. Eric Johnson of Fruit Bats put it best: Boston is “Gustertown, USA.” This fact was apparent as decades of Guster merchandise were sported by fans old and new throughout the crowd. Arriving at the venue, fans were greeting each other and singing tunes in the street as if they’d known each other forever. The music of Guster connected everyone in the crowd in more ways than one, making this show extra sentimental.

Lead singer Ryan Miller voiced his appreciation for Boston and excitedly exclaimed, “we’re home.” Miller also noted that this sold-out show was the largest gig they’ve played since Radio City Music Hall 20 years prior, calling their work “a gift” in a heartfelt thank you to the audience.

FRUIT BATS SOAR

Opening the show was Fruit Bats , a one-man, indie-folk band fronted by Eric Johnson. Utilizing only a six-string and his voice, Johnson impressed the crowd with his dynamic stylings and agility. His performance filled the 5,000-capacity venue with just as much fervor as if there were a ten-piece band on stage. Despite the complex nature of his songs, Fruit Bats wasn’t afraid to casually interact with the crowd and joke around. When presenting his song “You’re Too Weird,” he admitted that “some people use this song for their wedding… If you listen to the lyrics, you should never use this song for your wedding.” The crowd laughed along with him, then was immediately pulled back into his melodic atmosphere when he started strumming once again.

As a long-time friend of Guster, Johnson took some time to fittingly reminisce; the show was about “eras,” after all. A short story about Miller sending a “fan email” to Johnson about 20 years ago, sparking their first hangout on Guster’s tour van, garnered admiration from the audience. The history between the bands showed during the halfway mark of Johnson’s set when he  introduced his cover of INXS’s “Never Tear Us Apart.” He exclaimed that the fact that “Guster fans love covers” guided his choice to perform the song which he hadn’t covered in many years. Johnson’s appreciation, not only for Guster and their friendship but also for the adoring crowd, set the vibes even higher for the headlining event.

A GUSTER-TASTIC HISTORY LESSON WORTHY OF A BROADWAY RUN

Finally, it was Guster time. The lights dimmed and a narrator’s voice (of whom was Dave Butler, long-time drum tech and keyboardist of the band) cascaded over the venue. Butler proclaimed that tonight would be a “deep dive into the story of Guster, starting way back in 1991…” Suddenly, the two founding members of Guster, Ryan Miller and Adam Gardner, arrived on stage and arranged themselves in front of a comically small backdrop that mimicked a dorm room at their alma mater, Tufts. They performed a quick skit outlining an abridged version of the band's formation. The lighthearted tone for the night was immediately set as the crowd was instantly charmed by Guster’s characteristic goofiness that many have grown to cherish over their many eras.

After their opening performance of “Parachute,” drummer Brian Rosenworcel ‘joined’ the band. Rosenworcel is known as the “Thunder God” amongst fans (more on that later…) due to his unique approach to percussion by utilizing bongos and oftentimes playing with his hands instead of drumsticks. The group’s performances of “Happy Frappy” and “Airport Song” brought Rocky Horror -esque crowd participation, with fans throwing objects onto the stage. As each song ended and another proceeded, neither the crowd’s nor the band’s energy fell.

BITS UPON BITS: BREAKING INTO THE MAINSTREAM

Soon after Rosenworcel’s ‘addition,’ Guster dispersed from their centralized location in front of the backdrop into the entirety of the stage. The crowd felt the power of moving from an acoustic to more grandiose set, mimicking how the band’s sound and identity expanded through time. Songs like “Barrel of a Gun” and “Fa Fa” brought along audience participation in perfect synchronicity. One of their most famous songs, “Satellite,” featured softer vocals from Miller and a more relaxed approach from the rest of the band. While all bandmates were on their A-game, drummer Rosenworcel stood out for his percussion solos and nuances that directed the crowd’s dancing.

Smiles only continued to widen through various skits. They briefed the addition of former member Joe Pisapia as well as when Guster was dropped from Warner Bros. Records (garnering yays and boos, respectively). Right before their 15-minute intermission, Guster pulled off something only they could do; flight. Rosenworcel, tethered to the ceiling, flew upwards in true Godly fashion during a silly song about his “Thunder God” abilities. The audience gazed in amazement, probably collectively thinking, ‘nothing quite like a Guster show.’

ACT TWO BRINGS HEAVY EMOTIONS

The second act of the show kicked off with “Do You Love Me” as the band sported their paint-splattered coveralls from the music video. This portion proved to be focused more on the music rather than skits. But that didn’t mean the audience didn’t get their slice of Guster's history. Another comedic song detailed the departure of Joe and the subsequent addition of Luke Reynolds to the band, despite Reynolds playing the part of  ‘Joe’ prior in the night.

As the years in the band’s timeline moved closer to the present , fans’ vitality remained invigorating. “Long Night” added an angstier edge to the evening as Miller switched from piano and guitar to a juxtaposed xylophone. Immediately following was “Doin’ it By Myself” where Miller hopped into the crowd, igniting a new spark within the venue. Guster continued to impress and immerse the audience in their world filled with rainbow hats, trumpet solos and ‘Great Dave’ montages.

Playing two songs off of their newest record Ooh La La —“Keep Going” and “Black Balloon”—Guster proved their future is bright. “Come Downstairs and Say Hello” completed the main set with its booming instrumentation and playful lyricism, which left the crowd in a standing ovation.

A SINCERE ENDING… BUT ONLY JUST FOR NOW

To close out the night, Guster joyously returned from offstage for two more songs: “Happier” and “Amsterdam.” The four members of the group sat in front of a wooded backdrop and behind a small faux campfire as they poured their hearts into acoustic versions of the fan favorites. The experience truly felt like a real campfire sing along with everyone’s voices coming together and a shared feeling of letting everything go. The feeling in the venue was palpable and nobody wanted the show to end. But, as all good things must come to an end, Guster took their final bow to enthusiastic applause and roars.

The band shows no signs of slowing down as their new album Ooh La La is slated for release this May. Guster is sure to be back and entertain Boston again, but in the meantime, we can reflect on and appreciate their many eras through plentiful music and laughs.

Guster shares new song Elevator

April 25, 2024

guster tour opening act

Guster is gearing up for the release of their ninth studio album Ooh La L on May 17th. The release is the first LP in more than five years.

Ooh La La marks a bold departure from its predecessor, 2019’s acclaimed Look Alive. This time, Guster carved out a lush and acclaimed expansive sound rich in acoustic guitars and graceful piano work.

Nobody was going to accept a song that didn’t hit at a certain level, and it feels good to still have that passion more than 30 years into our career.” “We feel lucky that we’ve created a dynamic where there’s no real separation between us and our fans,” says Gardner. “We’re all part of a community, and it’s theirs just as much as it’s ours.” “One of the main reasons we’re still a band is the fans who’ve come to see us for years,” adds Miller, “the people who show us the tattoos they’ve gotten with our lyrics. It inspires us to stay creative and stay fearless, instead of just making the same record over and over. Everything we do is in service of that connection, and at this point I’d say we’re definitely lifers.”

Rolling Stones kick off 48th tour with ‘Hackney Diamonds’ cuts and classics in Houston

The Rolling Stones opened their Stones Tour ’24 Hackney Diamonds on Sunday to a sold-out crowd of more than 70,000 fans at NRG Stadium in Houston.

The Stones played just three new tracks from the album, choosing to focus instead on classic hits including “Start Me Up,” “Gimme Shelter,” “Jumpin’ Jack Flash” and “Satisfaction,” according to a press release. The decision to focus on older material was not unsurprising for a group with more than six decades of songs to choose from.

It was the rockers’ first performance of material from their 2023 effort “Hackney Diamonds” since the album’s surprise release at the 600-seat club Racket in New York last October. (Fans and celebrities packed that tiny venue expecting merely a Stones show and instead were treated to a breadth of new songs — and a Lady Gaga cameo.)

As the tour rolls on, Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Ronnie Wood and company plan to make stadium stops in Glendale, Ariz.; Las Vegas; Seattle; East Rutherford, N.J.; Foxboro, Mass.; Orlando; Atlanta; Philadelphia; Cleveland; Denver; Chicago; Vancouver; Inglewood; and Santa Clara.

When the Stones hit SoFi Stadium this summer, they’ll be accompanied by the War and Treaty on July 10 and the Linda Lindas on July 13.

“Hackney Diamonds” is the rockers’ first studio album of original material in nearly two decades, following 2005’s “A Bigger Bang.” It’s also the Stones’ first LP since the death of founding drummer Charlie Watts in 2021. It’s the first time the band has been on the road since its 60th anniversary tour in 2022, and the tour will also feature a stop at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival on May 2.

“Charlie was one of the funniest guys I’ve ever known,” Richards told Times music critic Mikael Wood in 2021, “and the most unlikely man to be famous. He hated that side of the job and used to savagely take the piss out of it.”

When “Hackney Diamonds” game out, Wood wrote in his album review, “The songs blend the same ingredients the Stones have been using since the beginning — blues, rock, soul, country, gospel — but they’re tighter and punchier than on any of the band’s previous late-era LPs.”

Meanwhile, according to Rolling Stone , back at the Houston concert one fan said, “People say Joe Biden is too old to be president. They need to look at Mick!”

That said, the Rolling Stones’ 48th tour is sponsored by AARP.

George Strait, Chris Stapleton in concert at EverBank Stadium. Here's what you should know

guster tour opening act

The echoes from two Luke Combs concerts will barely have time to fade before another big country crowd heads to Jacksonville's EverBank Stadium, this time for a triple bill of George Strait , Chris Stapleton and Little Big Town on Saturday, May 11.

Strait is about as big a star as you'll find anywhere in country music, and Stapleton isn't far behind. In fact, all three acts have headlined shows at venues in the Jacksonville area.

Strait is a "neotraditional" country star, sort of a throwback to the days when country music leaned heavily on pedal-steel guitars and fiddles. He's sold something like 120 million albums and has a record-setting 60 number-one hits. He's in the Country Music Hall of Fame, was named Artist of the Decade by the Academy of Country Music and has won more Country Music Association awards than anyone. Only Elvis Presley and the Beatles have released more gold or platinum albums.

Here's what you need to know about the show.

Where is George Strait playing in Jacksonville?

The concert is at EverBank Stadium , home of the Jacksonville Jaguars .

Who is opening for George Strait in Jacksonville?

First up is Little Big Town, a quartet that's toured with Strait in the past and has been named Vocal Group of the Year several times each by the Academy of Country Music and the Country Music Awards. The band has played Jacksonville shows at Freebird Live , Metropolitan Park, the arena, the St. Augustine Amphitheatre and Daily's Place, plus they did a 2012 show at Mayport Naval Station before a Georgetown-Florida basketball game aboard an aircraft carrier and played at Florida Country Superfest in the stadium in 2013.

Chris Stapleton is a Kentucky native who wrote hit songs for Strait, Kenny Chesney and Luke Bryan before busting out on his own with his quadruple-platinum debut album, "Traveler." He's won ten Grammy Awards and is the reigning Academy of Country Music Entertainer of the Year and Country Music Association Male Vocalist of the Year. Four of his five studio albums have gone platinum or better and all five topped the country charts. He's played at least three times at Jacksonville's arena and once at the St. Augustine Amphitheatre.

Fitting in: What to look for (and how to fit in) at a country music concert

How much are George Strait tickets in Jacksonville?

Tickets are available through the stadium's website, everbankstadium.com , ranging from $125-$650.

Has George Strait ever played a concert in Jacksonville?

Strait has been coming to Jacksonville since at least 1988. He played at the old Jacksonville Coliseum in '88, '94 and '95, headlined a huge country show at what was then called Alltel Stadium in 2000 and played the arena in '11 . He was scheduled to play at the arena in 2008 but came down with the flu backstage and had to reschedule for the following year; Little Big Town was the opening act for that show and played anyway.

Didn't George Strait retire from touring years ago?

Strait made quite a big deal about retiring from the road, even going on a Cowboy Rides Away Tour in 2014 and releasing a live album from the final show. He was back on the road a few years later, sort of, playing almost exclusively at the arena in Las Vegas from 2016-21. He now plays "limited engagements" that are a week or two apart.

More big concerts in 2024: 24 big shows coming to Jacksonville in 2024: Strait, Willie, McGraw, NKOTB

What other stadiums is George Strait playing on this tour?

The tour includes stops at the home stadiums of the Indianapolis Colts, Iowa State Cyclones, Carolina Panthers, New York Giants/Jets, Utah Utes, Texas A&M Aggies, Detroit Lions, Chicago Bears and Las Vegas Raiders.

Where can I park for the George Strait concerts?

Parking options range from $49-$107.50. There are thousands of spots in lots and garages in the nearby downtown area.

Getting there: How to get to events at EverBank Stadium

What time do parking lots open for the George Strait concert?

How many people will be at the george strait concert .

Officials are expecting around 40,000-45,000 fans.

What time does the stadium open for the George Strait concert?

Gates open at 4:30 p.m.

Can I jump into the EverBank Stadium swimming pools if I get overheated during the George Strait concert?

No, the “spas” on the north end of the stadium will not be open during the concerts. The entire north end of the stadium, which is behind the stage, will be closed to the public. The seats in Daily’s Place, the amphitheater attached to the southern end of the stadium, will be used as a cooling-off area for fans.

Desperately seeking shade: Where fans can find the coolest spots at TIAA Bank Field

Can I leave the stadium and come back in?

No. There is no re-entry allowed.

What time does the first act come on stage?

Little Big Town is scheduled to take the stage at 5:45 p.m., Chris Stapleton is scheduled to start at 7:15 p.m. Strait starts his show at 9:15 p.m.

Will the George Strait concert be rescheduled if it rains?

Acts may be postponed due to lightning, but the shows are rain or shine. The stage will be covered, but the fans won’t be.

What can I bring with me to the George Strait concert?

Policies will be mostly the same as at a Jaguars game. You can bring in one factory-sealed water bottle that is 16.9 ounces or less. All bags brought into the stadium must be clear and no larger than 12-by-6-by-12 inches. Backpacks of any kind (even clear) are prohibited, and no outside food or beverages are permitted.

Can I bring a camera to the George Strait concert?

Not if it has a detachable lens, but you can shoot all the photos you want with your smartphone. Go-Pros, HD video cameras and drones are also prohibited.

Can I hold up my phone and record the whole George Strait concert?

There’s no rule against that, but the people sitting behind you will hate you for it.
