Hurtigruten Unveils New Norwegian Cruises to Svalbard and Oslo in 2023

The cruise line's iconic Coastal Express is getting a major upgrade

For nearly 130 years, Hurtigruten’s Norwegian Coastal Express has been the best, most authentic way to travel across Norway. And things are about to get even better. In 2023, the cruise company is unveiling two upgraded versions of the iconic route: the Svalbard Express and North Cape Express, both of which will allow passengers to see even more of the Scandinavian nation.

These new extended routes mark the biggest product evolution since the Coastal Express—part expedition cruise, part ferry system, part cargo transport—launched in 1893.

“We have a lot of guests that come again and again on the Coastal Express, but now we will make something a bit different,” Hedda Felin, CEO of Hurtigruten Norway, told TripSavvy. “Now we can really say that guests can experience the best of Norway .”

While the original Coastal Express travels round trip from the southern city of Bergen up to the far northeastern town of Kirkenes, the new Svalbard Express will venture even further north to—you guessed it— Svalbard , an archipelago about halfway between mainland Norway and the North Pole. Upon arriving in Svalbard, passengers will get to experience excursions like dog sledding tours and wildlife photography lessons—the latter of which is particularly exciting, considering that Svalbard is one of the few places on the planet where you can see polar bears in their natural habitat.

Meanwhile, the North Cape Express takes guests to Oslo , marking the first time Hurtigruten will offer regular sailings to the capital city. According to Felin, this particular sailing will appeal to a new demographic for the cruise line—namely younger crowds interested in good art and good food.

“If you travel far to visit Norway, you probably want to see Oslo anyway,” Felin said. “Our dock will be just outside the Opera House, so it’s a very good way to experience a cool city.”

Both journeys will take place on board the MS Trollfjord, a current Hurtigruten vessel that will receive a complete refurbishment during the first half of 2023. Renovations will include upgraded cabins with modern Scandinavian décor and updated restaurants. Though these updates are exciting, long-time Hurtigruten fans can rest easy knowing that both routes will still include some of the brand’s most beloved features: impeccable service, onboard lecture programs, and incredibly strong ties with Norway’s coastal communities.

Courtesy of Hurtigruten

Those community ties are perhaps best seen in the cruise line’s Coastal Kitchen program . As part of this initiative, over 80 percent of the ingredients served onboard come from the ports you visit along every Coastal Express route. This past March, the program got an even more hyper-local boost by introducing a set of “ Culinary Ambassadors ”—award-winning Norwegian chefs who work with the cruise line's chefs to create new dishes and themed menus. (Don’t be surprised if you sit down to a five-course meal in which every dish features seaweed, for example.)

“We really want our guests to feel like they’re part of a bigger mission,” said Felin. “It’s not just tourism. Guests will be involved in a very critical part of Norway.”

The 14-day, round-trip Svalbard Express is scheduled to run from June to September in 2023, and from May to September from 2024 onward. Meanwhile, the 13-day North Cape Express cruise will run from late September through May starting in 2023. Outside cabins start at $7,369 per person on the Svalbard Express and $4,483 per person on the North Cape Express.

MS Maud, previously MS Midnatsol, is named after one of the most famous polar vessels of all time, Roald Amundsen's 'Maud' from 1917. The original 'Maud' got her name from the first Queen of modern-day Norway. She also had her namesake in Hurtigruten Expedition’s 1925 flagship, DS Dronning Maud ('DS Queen Maud'). Today, MS Maud is equipped with advanced technology that makes her exceptionally well-suited for expedition cruises in Norway and the British Isles.

MS Spitsbergen

MS Spitsbergen preview is named after the crown jewel of Arctic Norway – the Svalbard archipelago and its biggest island, Spitsbergen. Hurtigruten has a long history of traveling to Spitsbergen, beginning in 1896 with the 'Sports Route'.

Day 3 - Åndalsnes : Alpine village by the fjord

Nestled at the end of Romsdalsfjord along Isfjord, your inaugural port of call is the captivating town of Åndalsnes. Upon morning arrival in the town centre, you'll have the wonderful opportunity to explore this picturesque coastal gem, which is home to approximately 2,000 residents.

Historically, from 1838 to 1964, Åndalsnes held the role of administrative centre for the former municipality of Grytten. During World War II, the village faced significant destruction and had to be completely rebuilt. Today, Åndalsnes stands as a modern town boasting its own local newspaper and a privileged location within one of Norway's most awe-inspiring natural landscapes.

One cannot ignore the breathtaking mountains that majestically preside over Åndalsnes, truly defining its beauty. Embrace the Norwegian concept of friluftsliv, a deep appreciation for the outdoors, as you partake in an array of activities. Embark on a rewarding hike to the Rampestreken viewpoint, allowing the surrounding landscapes to leave an indelible impression on your senses.

For a more leisurely encounter with the captivating scenery, sit back and enjoy a serene ride on the Romsdal Gondola or embark on a mesmerizing bus journey along the winding Trollstigen Pass. Regardless of the activities you choose, this day will treat you to the most extraordinary vistas of Isfjord, Romsdalsfjord, and the majestic peaks that envelop the region.

Optional Excursions :

Day 4 - Træna : Norway's oldest fishing community

In the morning, we will embark on a scenic sail along the coast of the Helgeland region. As you gaze into the distance, you'll witness islands emerging from the glistening waters, indicating our imminent arrival at the next destination.

Welcome to Træna, an archipelago located 33 nautical miles northwest of the mainland and perched at the edge of the Arctic Circle. Comprising approximately 500 islands, islets, and skerries, with only four being inhabited year-round, Træna exudes tranquillity, with thriving bird life gracing its mostly uninhabited isles.

Despite its size, this archipelago boasts a rich history dating back to the Stone Age, as evidenced by archaeological discoveries found in the cave on the island of Sanna. Today, this very cave serves as a unique venue for an annual music festival, merging ancient relics with contemporary rhythms.

Spend the afternoon immersing yourself in one of Norway's oldest fishing communities. If weather conditions permit, you can partake in a range of activities such as invigorating hikes, scenic bike rides, or even indulge in the joy of island hopping.

Træna is renowned for its abundant population of Sea Eagles, making bird watching a captivating experience not to be missed. For a truly authentic encounter, step into the shoes of a Norwegian fisherman and cast your line under the warm embrace of the summer sun.

As evening approaches and it's time to bid farewell to Træna, take a moment to unwind and relax onboard. As we continue our northern journey, we will cross the Arctic Circle, marking this significant milestone with a memorable Norwegian ceremony. Let the serene surroundings and the gentle sway of the ship lull you into a state of tranquillity, preparing you for the adventures that lie ahead.

Optional excursions :

Day 5 - Stokmarknes : Birthplace of The Norwegian Coastal Express

Experience a full day in the captivating archipelago of Vesterålen, situated just northeast of the renowned Lofoten Islands. This group of islands holds great significance as it lent its name to our very first Norwegian Coastal Express vessel that embarked on a remarkable journey along Norway's rugged coastline back in 1893.

Your voyage will bring you to the enchanting town of Stokmarknes, a place of deep historical significance and sentimental value for Hurtigruten Norwegian Coastal Express. It is here, in this town, that the visionary shipping pioneer Richard With established the Original Coastal Express, revolutionizing coastal passenger travel and leaving an indelible mark on Norwegian shipping. Today, you have the extraordinary opportunity to revisit the birthplace of Hurtigruten's esteemed maritime legacy.

Stokmarknes, with its rich maritime heritage, serves as an ideal location for Hurtigrutemuseet, a museum dedicated to immortalizing our inspiring history. Situated along the waterfront, the museum proudly houses the retired 1956 vessel, MS Finnmarken, within a magnificent glass structure. Inside, you will discover a treasure trove of archives, photographs, and artefacts meticulously showcased across a captivating range of interactive exhibitions. Embark on a guided tour that will transport you to a bygone era, allowing you to absorb the authentic atmosphere as you explore the retired vessel.

Aside from the museum, your visit to Vesterålen offers a plethora of activities to enjoy. Immerse yourself in nature by embarking on invigorating hikes through the awe-inspiring landscapes of the islands. For those seeking an adrenaline rush, a thrilling RIB tour to Raftsundet or a Sea Eagle safari in the fjord that bestowed its name upon our beloved MS Trollfjord is a must-do experience.

Indulge in a full day immersed in the wonders of Vesterålen, as we pay homage to our maritime legacy, soak in the natural beauty, and engage in exhilarating adventures.

Day 6 - Tromsø, Gateway to the Arctic :

Tromsø, located in Northern Norway, is a vibrant urban hub in the Arctic region, renowned for its remarkable architecture, trendy restaurants, and the world's northernmost university. This city, steeped in polar history, serves as an ideal stopover before venturing further north into the High Arctic.

Despite its humble beginnings, Tromsø boasts a rich heritage that can be traced back to the Ice Age, with archaeological discoveries in the vicinity dating back to that era. In 1794, it was officially designated as a kjøpstad, or "market town," even though it was home to only 80 individuals. In the mid-1800s, Tromsø rose in prominence as a centre for Arctic hunting, evolving into a thriving Arctic trade hub by the late 19th century.

Upon our morning arrival, you will have an entire day to explore this historically significant Arctic city and its enchanting surroundings. Numerous optional excursions await, allowing you to delve deeper into Tromsø's culture and polar heritage. Embark on a captivating city walk to gain insights into Tromsø's past, or venture to the Polaria centre to witness the graceful seals. This remarkable facility, one of the world's northernmost aquariums, offers an up-close encounter with various Arctic marine species.

You may also have the opportunity to visit the striking Arctic Cathedral, featuring a magnificent, expansive stained-glass window that dazzles with its multicoloured hues. Alternatively, you can ascend Storsteinen Mountain, which towers above Tromsø, by taking the Fjellheisen Cable Car. From its summit, you will be rewarded with breathtaking views of the city, mountains, and fjords, an experience of exceptional beauty.

In Tromsø, the fusion of modernity and a profound Arctic legacy creates a truly captivating atmosphere, inviting you to immerse yourself in its unique charm and awe-inspiring surroundings.

Day 7 - Honningsvåg and the North Cape :

Around mid-morning, our journey brings us to Honningsvåg, the northernmost city in mainland Norway. Despite being relatively young, having gained city status only in 1996, Honningsvåg retains its charm as one of Norway's smallest cities.

Here in Honningsvåg, you have a range of optional excursions to choose from. You can try your hand at king crab fishing, immerse yourself in the culture of the indigenous Sámi people by visiting a local family, indulge in bird watching activities, or take a guided tour to gain insight into life at the remarkable latitude of 71°N.

Honningsvåg also serves as the gateway to the renowned North Cape, famously referred to as the "northernmost point of Europe." Rising 307 meters above the sea, this majestic plateau is located just over 1,000 miles south of the geographical North Pole. Take a moment to absorb the breathtaking views as you stand atop the towering cliffs, witnessing the waves crashing against the rocks below.

Perched proudly on one of these cliffs is an iconic globe monument, inviting visitors to capture a memorable selfie. After securing your selfie, a visit to North Cape Hall is highly recommended. Here, you'll find a range of exhibits and a short film that delves into the history of this remarkable cape.

As we set sail from Honningsvåg, we'll be treated to dramatic vistas of the plateau from the sea. The ship will venture further into the vast expanse of the Barents Sea, leaving the coastline of mainland Norway far behind us, as we embark on the next leg of our unforgettable journey.

Day 8 - At sea around Bjørnøya : Between Norway and Svalbard

As we continue our voyage, we reach Bjørnøya, the southernmost island of the Svalbard archipelago, situated beyond the halfway point between mainland Norway and Spitsbergen. Although we'll only view this inaccessible land from the ship in the afternoon, consider it the prelude to your Svalbard adventure.

Upon catching sight of the island, you may notice its striking lack of trees and even bushes. Bjørnøya is characterized by sparse vegetation, with the land mainly covered by a layer of moss and lichen. However, the abundant bird life that nests on the sea cliffs serves as a vital source of fertilization for the few plants that do grow here. Get ready with your camera to capture captivating moments of Little Auks, Puffins, Black-legged Kittiwakes, Northern Fulmars, and other seabird species soaring over dramatic cliff tops and steep slopes.

Despite its name, which translates to "Bear Island," the only native mammals found here are Arctic foxes. The island was named after a polar bear sighting in the nearby waters, although encountering a polar bear this far south is highly unlikely.

While aboard the ship, take advantage of the opportunity to learn about Bjørnøya's history through polar history lectures. Discover the fascinating tales of the historic expeditions that led to its discovery and the subsequent claims made by various countries over the island. Gain insight into the strategic significance of this remote sanctuary and the role it played during World War II.

Continuing our journey from Bjørnøya, make use of the MS Trollfjord's onboard facilities to relax, such as the sauna or fitness room. Additionally, there will be a photography workshop today, helping you sharpen your camera skills and focus your lens to capture the abundant wildlife and untouched wilderness that await us in Svalbard.

Day 9 - longyearbyen : at the edge of the world.

Today marks our arrival at the mesmerizing Svalbard archipelago, specifically the largest of the three main islands, Spitsbergen. As we venture forth, be prepared to witness a sight to behold—magnificent brown and green mountains gracefully ascend from the High Arctic tundra, while streams of snow-melt trickle through the valley plains, shimmering under the gentle caress of the summer sun.

Take a moment to embrace this very moment in Svalbard, where you find yourself at a latitude exceeding 78°N and just 820 miles (1,500 kilometres) from the North Pole itself. The air in this Arctic desert is fresh and pure, and thanks to the warm northern branch of the Gulf Stream, summer temperatures typically range from zero to eight degrees Celsius.

Our journey leads us to the picturesque settlement of Longyearbyen, nestled along the banks of a sweeping, expansive fjord. As the largest settlement in Svalbard, it proudly holds the title of the world's northernmost inhabited place with a population surpassing 1,000.

Originally established as a coal mining colony in 1906, Longyearbyen now serves as a hub for adventure seekers, scientists, and engineers engaged in various local research projects, including the renowned Global Seed Vault.

Take some time to explore the town at your leisure, savouring the collection of galleries, pubs, restaurants, and even a local brewery. Don't miss the opportunity to visit the notable North Pole Expedition Museum, where you can delve into the fascinating history of polar exploration.

Moreover, you'll have an array of optional excursions to choose from, allowing you to immerse yourself in the awe-inspiring landscapes that envelop Longyearbyen. Ever dreamed of dog sledding without the presence of snow? This is your chance to experience this thrilling activity firsthand.

Embrace the enchantment of Svalbard and let its extraordinary charm captivate your senses as we embark on this unforgettable journey.

Day 10 - Ny-Ålesund : Science on the Arctic frontier

As we set sail from Longyearbyen, make sure to rise early to witness the breathtaking vistas of Kongsfjord, one of the largest fjords in the region. Its entrance is guarded by two colossal glaciers that emit resonating creaks as they periodically release ice into the fjord.

This stretch of our journey is an opportune moment to keep a keen eye out for walruses basking along the shores and a variety of migrating bird species, including puffins, king eiders, pink-footed geese, and guillemots. On land, you may catch glimpses of Arctic foxes and Svalbard reindeer, while the pristine waters have occasionally graced us with the presence of white beluga whales. If luck is on our side, we might even spot a polar bear stealthily prowling the coastline in search of bearded and ringed seals.

At the tip of the Brøgger Peninsula, nestled on one of Kongsfjord's shores, lies Ny-Ålesund. Similar to Longyearbyen, this settlement had its origins as a coal mining town but has since evolved into a hub for scientific research stations since the mid-20th century. During the summer months, more than a hundred researchers from over 10 countries and 20 glaciology and climate institutes call this place home.

Take a leisurely stroll around Ny-Ålesund, proudly regarded as one of the northernmost settlements in the world. Visit the local museum and souvenir shop, or seize the opportunity to send a postcard from the small post office, allowing your friends and family to receive greetings from this remote corner of the globe.

For those eager to delve deeper into the town's history, a guided tour of the Amundsen monument is highly recommended. Erected in honour of the legendary Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen, this monument commemorates his ground breaking flight to the North Pole in 1926. Amundsen piloted the airship Norge from Ny-Ålesund and successfully touched down in Alaska three days later, accomplishing this feat by way of the North Pole.

Immerse yourself in the wonders of Kongsfjord, Ny-Ålesund, and the surrounding Arctic landscape, as we continue our remarkable expedition through this captivating region.

Day 11 - At sea : Leaving Svalbard

Regrettably, it is time to bid farewell to the captivating landscapes of Svalbard and Spitsbergen. As we set sail southward, back to mainland Norway, there is a possibility of a detour to Recherchefjord, a small fjord located south of Bellsund, if time permits.

Onboard the ship, take this day as an opportunity to unwind and recharge. If the skies are clear, bask in the warmth of the summer sun on deck while keeping a watchful eye for the enchanting presence of whales, dolphins, and porpoises. Alternatively, indulge in a soothing steam session at the sauna, offering a moment of relaxation and tranquillity.

For intriguing insights into local history and wildlife, don't miss the enlightening lectures delivered by the Coastal Experience Team. They may also provide a photography workshop, assisting you in honing your skills to capture breathtaking shots in the days to come.

Delight in the culinary offerings onboard, courtesy of our Norway's Coastal Kitchen concept. Indulge in sumptuous food and beverages featuring the finest and most flavoursome local Norwegian produce. As an added treat, there may be tastings of regional delicacies or captivating demonstrations by our skilled onboard chefs in the show kitchen.

Whether you choose to curl up with a good book in the lounge or engage in lively conversations with newfound friends in the bar, take this opportunity to reminisce and share your favourite moments from the voyage thus far.

Embrace the remaining time onboard, savouring the comforts and camaraderie that have enriched our journey, as we make our way back towards mainland Norway.

Day 12 - Tromsø and Senja ; Exploring 'Little Norway'

We have returned to mainland Norway, and our first destination of the day is Tromsø. Here, the ship will unload any cargo from Svalbard and take on new cargo bound for ports further south.

Returning to Tromsø after our expedition to Svalbard follows in the footsteps of history. Many explorers and sailors, upon completing their Arctic adventures, would converge upon this city. They found the fashion and culinary offerings to be remarkably stylish and refined, especially in comparison to the rugged frontier towns they had encountered. In fact, they affectionately dubbed Tromsø as 'the Paris of the North'.

Our journey continues southward towards Senja, one of Norway's largest islands and a rapidly emerging destination in northern Norway. It comes as no surprise that Senja has been recognized among CNN's top ten most beautiful islands in the world. Proudly referred to as a 'mini Norway' by locals, Senja showcases a remarkable concentration of landscapes that draw inspiration from different parts of the Norwegian coast. To fully immerse yourself in the enchantment of this fairytale island, we recommend disembarking in Tromsø and participating in one of our optional excursions.

Embrace the opportunity to explore the captivating beauty of Senja, a destination that promises to leave you spellbound with its scenic wonders reminiscent of various corners of Norway's picturesque coastline.

Day 13 - Svolvær : Fall in love with Lofoten

Today is dedicated to exploring the breathtaking Lofoten archipelago, renowned as one of Norway's most awe-inspiring regions. As you witness the rugged emerald cliffs emerge dramatically from the ocean, soaring skyward like colossal teeth, you'll quickly understand why this area is celebrated for its spectacular beauty.

Charming fishing villages appear as clusters of red-roofed houses perched on stilts, delicately clinging to the edges of mountainous islands. Scattered amidst the vibrant blues of the sea and lush greens of the mountainside, you'll also spot solitary fishermen huts, known locally as rorbuer, their red hues accentuating the scenery.

Life in Lofoten exudes tranquillity and serenity, as if time itself has been suspended by the sheer magnificence of the islands. Prepare to immerse yourself in the peacefulness that envelops this place, where the rhythm of life slows to a gentle pace, allowing you to truly appreciate the surroundings.

At the heart of the archipelago lies the town of Svolvær, which serves as our base for most of the day. Here, you'll find a delightful array of shops and restaurants, inviting you to explore and acquaint yourself with the town at your own leisure.

To fully experience the mountains, islands, and villages that abound around Svolvær, we have curated a selection of top-notch excursions tailored specifically for Lofoten. Embark on an optional hike to one of the local white-sand beaches, where you can lend a helping hand in a beach clean-up before taking a refreshing swim. And don't fret about choosing between a mountain hike or kayaking—they can both be accomplished during the long summer days, allowing you to relish the best of both the sea and the summit.

Embrace the extraordinary beauty of Lofoten as you embark on these handpicked excursions, discovering the enchanting landscapes, charming villages, and pristine beaches that make this archipelago truly exceptional.

Day 14 - Brønnøysund : Highlights of the Helgeland Coast

Continuing our southward journey, we arrive at the captivating Helgeland Coast, a renowned stretch of the Norwegian coastline adorned with distinctive mountains that have inspired enchanting myths and local folklore for centuries.

Our ship will be stationed in the charming town of Brønnøysund, which boasts a delightful marina and a Neo-gothic stone church dating back to 1870. Take the time to explore the town at your leisure or partake in optional excursions such as kayaking, cycling, or a thrilling RIB cruise, allowing you to experience the beauty of the surroundings in different ways.

A true highlight of this region is the mesmerizing Vega archipelago, comprising approximately 6,500 islands, skerries, and islets. On the island of Gardsøy, you'll find a UNESCO World Heritage Centre that showcases the centuries-old tradition of harvesting highly valued eiderdown from the local eider ducks. The centre provides little huts for the ducks to build their nests, offering a fascinating glimpse into this unique cultural practice.

Continuing our journey from Brønnøysund, we encounter the extraordinary Torghatten Mountain. Its most distinctive feature is the hole that penetrates through its centre, capturing the imagination of all who see it. According to legend, the hole was formed by an arrow shot by a spurned troll at his love interest, while the mountain itself is said to be the petrified hat of a Troll King who attempted to block the arrow.

As an optional excursion, you'll have the opportunity to leisurely hike to the hole in Torghatten, which takes approximately an hour at a comfortable pace. Once you reach the summit, a breathtaking panoramic view awaits you, showcasing the lush trees and scattered islands stretching out before your eyes—a sight well worth the journey.

Immerse yourself in the rich folklore and natural wonders of the Helgeland Coast as we explore Brønnøysund and its surroundings, including the captivating Vega archipelago and the legendary Torghatten Mountain.

Day 15 - Ålesund and Hjørundfjord : Secret of the Sunnmøre Alps

The ship will make a brief stop in the town of Ålesund, known for its Art Nouveau architecture and picturesque position on a peninsula below Mount Aksla. We'll off-load any cargo here as well guests who are joining excursions.

Near to Ålesund, cutting through the peaks of the Sunnmøre Alps, some 1,700 metres high, is magnificent Hjørundfjord. Its picture-perfect position embedded in the Sunnmøre Alps means it is the area's hidden gem and a secret from most other ships.

Those who do discover Hjørundfjord rank it as a serious contender for their favourite fjord in Norway. Its deep blue waters and verdant mountainsides seem perfectly proportionate and aligned, as if sculpted deliberately by nature's artistry.

On the banks of one of Hjørundfjord's branches is the idyllic village of Sæbø. This is where the ship will pick up guests who had previously left the ship at Ålesund to go on an excursion.

We are fast approaching the last day of our voyage. While bittersweet, what better way to celebrate our Svalbard Express experience than a merry farewell dinner on our last night. It'll also be an opportunity to look back fondly at the many highlights of this journey we've all shared together.

Day 16 - Bergen : Back where we began

We arrive back in Bergen in the morning. It's time to disembark the ship, but not before saying fond farewells to your fellow passengers and to the crew of MS Trollfjord who made your Svalbard Express journey such a comfortable one.

You've travelled as part of this historic, iconic voyage to pieces of paradise along the Norwegian coast you won't soon forget. If you've engaged in optional excursions, will you have photos to share of you kayaking, hiking, fishing, cycling in some of the most beautiful scenery ever seen?

We know you'll take fond memories of the North Cape, Helgeland, Lofoten, Senja, Hjørundfjord, crossing the Arctic Circle, Tromsø, Bjørnøya, Longyearbyen, and Ny-Ålesund home with you to make your friends and family green with envy.

This has been The Svalbard Express. We hope to see you back here on the Norwegian coast with us soon.

Scandinavian cruise line Hurtigruten takes passengers to small towns, past big-time scenery, and above the Arctic Circle on its relaunched Svalbard Express route.

There was no Broadway show, no ice-skating rink, no go-kart track. My suite, comfortable as it was, didn’t even have a balcony — something that’s commonplace on cruise ships these days. But, after a few days aboard the Trollfjord, I didn’t miss any of those things.

Christian Houge/Courtesy of Hurtigruten

Over the years, I’ve sailed on more than 30 ships, mostly in the Caribbean. So I was intrigued by the Trollfjord, not because it can compete with the latest mega-vessels, but rather because of the way it connects with the past. The Hurtigruten ship, which was refurbished in 2023, has resumed service on a route called the Svalbard Express. First offered in 1968, the journey, which starts in Bergen, Norway, was a critical link to the far northern reaches of the country for people, mail, freight, and the occasional tourist. Last June, Hurtigruten relaunched its signature service to Svalbard, the high Arctic archipelago, aiming to shine a spotlight on the islands as well as other small communities along Norway’s long, rugged coast. (The company has also launched a new journey with a similar focus, the North Cape Express, which connects Oslo and Honningsvåg, the northernmost city on the mainland.)

I dove in to my Svalbard Express voyage, literally, when we arrived at our second stop, Træna, a collection of more than 500 islands that are home to about the same number of people. It’s Norway’s oldest fishing community, situated at the edge of the Arctic Circle. I took the chance to go for a dip in the exceedingly clear, exceedingly frigid waters, knowing that a few short steps away was a rustic boathouse-turned-sauna where I could warm up while sipping beer and swapping stories with islanders and other Trollfjord  passengers.

Farther north, in Tromsö, a small group of us set out for a 90-minute hike, which started with a quick cable-car ride to a trailhead 1,400 feet above the city. Despite the mid-60s temperatures, snow was spilled like confectioner’s sugar on the mountainside — something of a revelation for a Miami resident like me.

A few days later, in Longyearbyen, one of the northernmost settlements in the world, I joined some fellow travelers in boarding a day-tripping catamaran with whisper-quiet hybrid-electric engines for a half day of sightseeing. We traveled through narrow channels until we came face to face with the enormous Nordenskiöld Glacier. The minty-blue ice floe struck me as impossibly huge, but our guides detailed how, because of climate change, Nordenskiöld is actually retreating at an alarming rate.

That night, Hurtigruten arranged for a candlelit dinner ashore for 10 of us at the Longyearbyen restaurant Huset . Served in the 15,000-bottle wine cellar, the extravagant 14-course meal was brimming with local specialties such as reindeer, sea urchin, and seal.

I found plenty to enjoy aboard the ship, as well. It has 270 perfectly comfortable cabins (including 21 spacious suites, five of them with balconies). Mine, an Arctic Superior, had a sleek, neutral look, with a compact bathroom and a picture window above the bed. The main dining room, Flora, leans heavily into Scandinavian flavors — salmon is served many ways — and has numerous à la carte choices. Brasserie Árran is influenced by the culture of the Indigenous Sami people, with hearty dishes such as braised reindeer, chopped steak burgers, and roasted bone marrow. A third restaurant, Røst, does a formal New Nordic–inspired lunch and dinner. It’s included for suite guests; cabin guests can pay extra for a reservation. There’s also a bar, plenty of lounge space, a gym, and a small sauna.

During my sail, I felt comfortable and cared for at every turn, even if the vibe wasn’t fully five-star. Think of the Trollfjord as the fanciest of ferries and you, like me, will be delightfully surprised by where it can take you.

DAY 1 : Bergen*

Welcome to Norway!

You’ll arrive in Bergen, a beautiful city on the west coast of Norway. Admire views of the majestic peaks that famously surround the city, giving Bergen its nickname, “The City of Seven Mountains”.

What began as a small village was developed by King Olav Kyree in 1070 AD and is now Norway’s second-largest city. Nestled in the centre is Vågen Bay, the historic core of the city, and home to the UNESCO-listed Bryggen quarter. There, you can wander down charming cobblestone streets and peruse local boutique shops. Across from Bryggen, you’ll find the fish market, which cooks up fresh and delicious seafood dishes to feast on.

As you’re here in the summer, the days are long, giving you more hours of daylight to explore this historic city. One of the seven mountains in Bergen’s nickname is Mount Fløyen, accessible by walking up or taking the Fløibanen funicular. At the top, enjoy some stunning views of the city and nearby peaks.

Reward yourself and your thirst with some local 7 Fjell beer, before going to your hotel to get some rest, ready to embark on your Svalbard Express voyage the next day.

*Please note that if the date you make your booking is less than 90 days before your chosen departure date, your voyage will start on Day 2 in Bergen.

DAY 2 : Bergen

Sailing The Svalbard Express

After waking up in your hotel, you might have a bit of time in the early morning to explore more of Bergen before a transfer meets you at your hotel to bring you to our comfortable guest lounge at the Bergen Terminal.  Here, you can sample finger-food from our Norway’s Coastal Kitchen and talk to staff about securing a spot on any optional excursions still available.

Once we’ve welcomed you aboard, you’ll meet your ship’s Coastal Experience Team, who will be your hosts and guides to the Norwegian coastline and Svalbard. Get acquainted with your shipmates and take some time to get comfortable in your new home-away-from-home.

Enjoy your first meal aboard the ship, and watch the row of colourful buildings on the seafront get smaller behind you as you sail into the Norwegian Sea.

DAY 3 : Åndalsnes

Alpine village by the fjord

Located along the Isfjord, Åndalsnes is a picturesque coastal town, home to about 2,000 people.

The literal highlights of Åndalsnes are the mountains that tower over the town. Experience the Norwegian concept of  friluftsliv  – a love of the outdoors – through a variety of activities, such as hiking to Rampestreken viewpoint.

For an easier way to take in the sights, sit back for a relaxing ride on the Romsdal Gondola or travel the winding Trollstigen Pass by bus. Whichever activities you choose, this day will bring you the best views of the Isfjord, Romsdalsfjord, and surrounding peaks.

  • Hairpin Bends & Soaring Mountains - Trollstigen Scenic Bus Tour Join this bus tour along iconic hairpin bends that wind their way through lush valleys and dramatic mountains.
  • Stand-Up Paddle Board in Åndalsnes  Enjoy a duck’s view of the Istra River and surrounding towering peaks as you stand-up paddleboard (SUP) its calm, green waters.
  • Åndalsnes Town Walk and Romsdal Gondola Explore the highlights of Åndalsnes, a small town at the head of the Romsdalsfjord, surrounded by soaring mountains and known for its dramatic history.

DAY 4 : Træna

Norway’s oldest fishing community

We’ll sail along the coast of the Helgeland region in the morning. When you see islands rising out of the water in the distance, you’ll know we’re almost at our next destination.

Træna is an archipelago that sits at the edge of the Arctic Circle, 33 nautical miles northwest of the mainland. Made up of around 500 islands, islets and skerries, with only four inhabited year-round, Træna is a quiet municipality, with birdlife thriving on the mostly uninhabited isles.

Though small, this archipelago has a long history, with archaeological finds indicating that the islands have been inhabited since the Stone Age. Some of these ancient relics have been found in a cave on the island of Sanna, which is now used as a venue for an annual music festival.

Spend the afternoon in one of Norway’s oldest fishing communities. If weather permits, you might be able to enjoy such activities as culture walks, Arctic swimming, or even island hopping.

Y ou could also head out on deck to scan the skies for Sea Eagles , the largest bird of prey in Norway . Or, for  a truly authentic experience, step into the age-old shoes of a Norwegian fisherman, and cast a line under the summer sun.

When it’s time to leave in the evening, take some time to rest onboard and unwind. We’ll cross the Arctic Circle as we continue heading north, commemorating the moment with a little Norwegian ceremony.

  • Træna Island Hopping Get to know the people, wildlife, and ways of life on the beautiful isle of Selvær.
  • Træna Culture Walk – Poetry, Art, and Heritage Stimulate your senses on this fascinating guided walk through Træna’s cultural landscape and bask in the natural scenery of the islands too.
  • Arctic Dip – Sauna & Swim For an invigorating experience, enjoy a sauna in Træna’s oldest house then, if you feel like it, jump in the Norwegian Sea.

DAY 5 : Reine

The tip of Lofoten

Today, we explore the famed  Lofoten Islands . Watch for the steep mountains rising from the sea as we approach from the south in the morning.

We dock in Reine, an important – and picture-perfect – fishing village since 1743. This is one of the most-photographed landscapes in all of Norway, where red-painted  rorbuer  cling to a string of islands beneath sharp mountain ranges reflected in the waters below.

Not far to the south of Reine, at the western tip of the Lofoten archipelago, you’ll find Å, one of the best-preserved traditional fishing villages in Norway. You can visit it on an optional excursion.

At the heart of this tiny village is the Norwegian Fishing Village Museum, which covers the importance and development of fishing in Lofoten over the last 250 years.

  • The Coastal Express Heritage Tour Take an exclusive tour of the Hurtigruten Museum, home to our full-sized retired ship, in our birthplace of Stokmarknes.
  • Reine & Lofoten Scenery Lofoten is a special, iconic place of towering coastal mountains and small coastal communities. From Reine to Ramberg beach, you’re in for some unforgettable views.

DAY 6 : Tromsø

Gateway to the Arctic

Tromsø is northern Norway’s urban Arctic hotspot, boasting impressive architecture, hip restaurants, and the world’s northernmost university. Rich in polar history, it makes for a natural stopping point before we go further north and into the High Arctic.

This modern city has a long legacy, with artefacts being found nearby that date back to the Ice Age. The city grew in importance after being declared a kjøpstad , or “market town” in 1794, despite only being home to 80 people. It became a centre of Arctic hunting in the mid-1800s, and by the end of the 19th century, Tromsø was an established Arctic trade centre.

We aim to dock here in the morning, giving you a whole day to explore this historic Arctic city and its surroundings. Learn more about the culture and polar history of Tromsø on a city walk. Or go watch graceful seals at the Polaria centre, one of the world’s northernmost aquariums where you can see various species of Arctic marine life up close.

There may also be an option to visit the striking Arctic Cathedral which has an impressively large multi-coloured stained-glass window. Or towering over Tromsø is Storsteinen Mountain, accessible via Fjellheisen Cable Car for exceptionally beautiful views of the city, mountains, and fjords.

  • Hiking with Vikings Celebrate Northern history, tradition and culture as you travel through time to the Viking age at Tønsviking Medieval homestead.
  • Tromsø, The Arctic Capital – Summer Explore the remarkable polar heritage, modern culture, and extraordinary panoramic views of Tromsø, ‘Paris of the North’, in summer.
  • Tromsø On Foot – The City & Its Polar History Take a stroll through the fascinating history and heritage of Tromsø and discover why it’s known as the ‘Gateway to the Arctic’.
  • The Northernmost Brewery Let actors entertain you on this tour through Tromsø to Mack, long known as the northernmost brewery in the world.
  • Explore Tromsø by E-bike  (Spring & Summer) Hop on an electric bike to explore the city known as the “Paris of the North” with ease. Enjoy a local’s-eye view as you discover little-known sights and admire the gorgeous Arctic scenery.

DAY 6 : Honningsvåg

At the top of Europe

Around mid-morning, we arrive at Honningsvåg, the northernmost city in mainland Norway. Honningsvåg is a fairly young city, having only been declared as such in 1996, and it remains one of Norway’s smallest cities today.

You have several optional excursions to pick from here. These could include king crab fishing, meeting an indigenous Sámi family, birdwatching, or a guided tour of what life is like at 71°N.

Honningsvåg is also the gateway to the North Cape, the famed “northernmost point of Europe”. The plateau stands 307 metres above the sea, and is just over 1,000 miles south of the geographical North Pole. Take a moment to gaze out across the sea from a top the soaring cliffs, watching the waves crash against the rocks below.

Standing proudly on top of one of the cliffs is an iconic globe monument which invites all visitors to take a quick selfie. Selfie sorted, you’ll also want to visit North Cape Hall, which has a variety of exhibits and a short film that tells of the cape’s history.

Sailing away from Honningsvåg, we’ll enjoy dramatic views of the plateau from the sea. The ship will head further into the Barents Sea, leaving mainland Norway’s coast far behind us.

  • North Cape and King Crab Experience - Summer From iconic views at the North Cape to delicious king crab, join us as we experience the highlights of Honningsvåg.
  • Quad Biking to North Cape Drive your own quad bike on a thrilling adventure to continental Europe’s northernmost point.
  • RIB & King Crab Experience Join this thrilling RIB safari and follow the journey of the majestic king crab, from the depths of the Barents Sea all the way to your plate.

DAY 8 : At sea around Bjørnøya

Between Norway and Svalbard

The southernmost island of the Svalbard archipelago, Bjørnøya sits just past the halfway point between mainland Norway and Spitsbergen. We’ll be viewing this inaccessible land from the ship in the afternoon, so think of this as the prologue to your Svalbard adventure.

Upon seeing the island, you might notice the lack of trees, and even bushes. Very little grows here, with the land partly being covered only by a layer of moss and lichen. Whatever does grow here is fertilised by the abundant birdlife that nests on the sea cliffs. Get your camera ready to capture Little Auks, Puffins, Black-legged Kittiwakes, and Northern Fulmars flying over dramatic cliff tops and steep slopes, alongside many other seabird species.

Contrary to its name, which means “Bear Island”, the only native mammals are Arctic foxes. The island was named after a polar bear was spotted swimming in the waters nearby, but this is an unlikely sight this far south.

Aboard the ship, you can learn about Bjørnøya’s history through polar history lectures. You might find out about the historic expeditions that led to its discovery, and the subsequent claims that various countries have made to the island. Discover the strategic importance of this unreachable sanctuary, and the role Bjørnøya played in World War II.

Sailing on from Bjørnøya, continue to make use of MS Trollfjord’s various onboard facilities to relax, such as the sauna or fitness room.

DAY 9 : Longyearbyen*

At the edge of the world

Today, we arrive at the Svalbard archipelago and make our way up to Spitsbergen, the largest of the three main islands. Magnificent brown and green mountains rise and ripple up from the High Arctic tundra while rivers of snow-melt trickle through the valley plains, glistening under the summer sun.

Take a moment to just be here, now, in Svalbard. You’re at a latitude more than 78°N and under 820 miles / 1,500 kilometres from the North Pole itself. The air is fresh and pure, and the overall temperature in summer is mild thanks to a warm northern branch of the Gulf Stream.

You’ll disembark the ship at Longyearbyen, nestled on the banks of a sweeping, large fjord. It is the biggest settlement in Svalbard and pegged as the world’s northernmost settlement with a population greater than 1,000.

Home to some 2,000 inhabitants from across the world, it originally sprang up as a coal mining colony in 1906. Today, it is a hub for adventure travellers, as well as scientists and engineers attached to local research projects, like the famous Global Seed Vault.

After transferring and checking in to your hotel, in the evening you’ll head to Camp Barentz, located at the foot of Breinosa mountain, for a true Svalbard wilderness experience. There, enjoy dinner in a cosy wooden cabin and maybe even try some bidos – a traditional, homemade Sámi stew of slow-cooked reindeer meat and vegetables.

Tuck into your dessert outside around the campfire, perhaps under the Midnight Sun. End your day admiring the mountains as we head back to your hotel in Longyearbyen.

*Please note that if the date you make your booking is less than 90 days before your chosen departure date, your voyage will end on Day 9 in Longyearbyen.

DAY 10 : Longyearbyen

Mini adventure in the High Arctic

After breakfast at your hotel, you’ll be off on a mini adventure aboard hybrid-electric catamaran MS Bard. Make the most of the summer climate to take a tour on the water of Spitsbergen’s magnificent landscapes at Billefjord and Nordenskiöldbreen.

MS Bard is a groundbreaking new catamaran for day cruises. Whenever it approaches glaciers, wildlife, or settlements, it will run silently on electric propulsion. This together with its specially designed propellers create minimal noise and vibration so as not to disturb Arctic wildlife.

Early in the season, there might still be ice in Billefjord. Switching to the boat's electric motor, we’ll carefully and silently follow the ice edge, on the lookout for seabirds, walrus, and seals. You’ll also be able to enjoy views of the beautiful and vast Nordenskiöld glacier which crumbles icebergs into the fjord.

Along the way, you can spot abandoned Soviet coal mining town Pyramiden in the distance, so named after the shape of a nearby mountain. While a ghost town for many years, there have been recent attempts by various individuals to repopulate the area.

On the outer park of Billefjord is Skansbukta, another small settlement and gypsum mine lost to time under the impressive cliffs. MS Bard will also sail past Svenskhuset, the oldest standing building on Spitsbergen and site of tragic lead poisoning in tinned food that claimed the lives of 17 hunters and sailors.

Admiring the views of the fjord, glacier, mountains, and Arctic flora in bloom, you’ll make your way back to Longyearbyen on MS Bard to spend the night at your hotel.

DAY 11 : Longyearbyen

Return from the top of the world

Following breakfast at your hotel, it’s time to say farewell to Svalbard and to Spitsbergen. You’ll make your own way to the airport at Longyearbyen, marking the end of your time with us . Alternatively, you could choose to extend your stay in Svalbard.

You’ve travelled as part of this historic, iconic voyage to pieces of paradise along the Norwegian coast and Svalbard you won’t soon forget. If you’ve engaged in optional excursions, will you have photos to share of you kayaking, hiking, fishing, cycling in some of the most beautiful scenery ever seen?

We know you’ll take fond memories home with you and we wish you a safe onward journey. This has been The Svalbard Express. We hope to see you back here with us soon.

Join a unique boat trip through the beautiful coastal landscapes of Svalbard. With the hybrid-electric catamaran MS Bard, an exciting and more environmentally friendly boat trip awaits you. The route takes you through breathtaking landscapes, to Billefjorden and the glacier front of Nordenskiöldbreen.

Svalbard is known for its “Arctic silence”, and with the silent hybrid-electric catamaran you will experience this in the best possible way. The boat is emission-free when it runs on electricity, and we are very proud to be able to introduce this type of transport here in the vulnerable Arctic waters.

The conditions in Svalbard change a lot throughout the year, and a trip under the midnight sun in May will be different from when the polar night approaches in October. Whatever the season, you can expect unique experiences in beautiful Svalbard nature. Early in the season, parts of the Billefjord may still be covered in ice. Using only the electric motor, we will then silently follow the ice edge where the opportunity to see wildlife is great! Here we will also enjoy the beautiful glacier front of Nordenskiöldbreen. In addition, we will see the ghost town Pyramiden from a distance, and drive by the bay Skansbukta.

Included - Transfer to/from the harbour in Longyearbyen - Boat trip with a guide on board - Light dish (lentil soup with crispbread) - All necessary safety equipment
