Customer Reviews

10 thoughts on “ the central viet nam heritage discovery ”.

Our trip with A Travel Mate had a duration of 6 days. We visited Phong Nha Cave, Paradise Cave, Imperial Citadel, Hai Van pass, and Hoi An among some of the places. The absolute highlight of the tour was having Cong as your driver through the entire trip. He is highly flexibly and great company. He can show you some very local places that you would not find on your own. Another highlight of the trip for us, we see Hai Van Cloudy Pass – the most breathtaking scenery I have ever seen. A wonderful way of experiencing the country. This part is highly recommendable.

This is an awesome and honest tour company. Phuc was an amazing guide and An our driver was safe and punctual. It was my daughters 21st birthday and the company arranged a beautiful cake for her. Our lunch at a garden restaurant was fantastic. I highly recommend this company – private tour is the way to go. Thank you again for showing us so much

Ms Angelina and her team are providing excellent service. They react very fast and deliver what they promise and anticipate on customers wishes. We appreciated the trust and flexibility. The car was well maintained and clean. Driver was ok, could have been a little bit more active. Thanks so much for making our 6 days in Central Vietnam a wonderful experience

Huy, our guide, was great. He was early picking us up at our hotel, he was friendly and very knowledgeable about the areas. The tour itinerary was exactly what we wanted to experience, and we weren’t disappointed. Highlights for us were Lang Co Bay and the Marble Mountain. Paradise Cave, Hai Van Cloudy Pass. Brilliant tour, highly recommended!

Our guide Tri spoke excellent English and was really interesting. He told us about Vietnam and was a real pleasure. At each stop over he gave us time to be on our own so we could explore each site for as long as we wanted. This meant we never felt under pressure and gave us time to enjoy our holiday. The best stop points are Paradise Cave and the Marble Mountain. These are must do visits, we really enjoyed them. Tri also took us to an amazing restaurant for lunch and gave us excellent tips on restaurants in Hoi An. I would thoroughly recommend this tour company since it delivers a very personal service at a very competitive price.

I am glad to share my experiences with A Travel Mate. The tour was a Paradise Discovery. As mentioned in the description of the tours they are really dedicated people with full of passion and energy. A great team accompanying us in the discovery was so great. Within 6 days we covered quite a great distance but with relaxation and fun. Places like Phong Nha, Da Nang, Hue, Ba Na Hills, My son, … oh… great. The guide knew well where to go, how to go and what will make the touring party enjoy the travel. For a good tour, not only the vehicle, the accompanying team is important. The experience was spectacular, amusing and very worthwhile and fantastic. Worth for the money spent. Looking forward to returning to Hoi An to make another great travel with A Travel Mate

A Travel Mate is the best tour company in vietnam. Angelina ms is the greatest lady in vietnam that we’ve talked to! thank you for the great visit to Phong Nha, Danang and Hoi an and for the information and professional team showing us the fabulous highlights of this great region of Vietnam, it made the holiday so much better than we expected

Vinh made our time in Vietnam the best family trip we’ve been on. He was extremely knowledgeable, very engaging and had a great sense of humour. We were lucky to be with him for6 days and visited Phong Na national park and the amazing cave systems, Hue city and Danang. We all missed him so much we met up with him in our free time in Hoi an and went out for a lovely meal. We can’t recommend him highly enough and we will make a trip back to this magical place and will definitely use Vinh again.

We went to the Paradise Cave, which was one of my top things I did while travelling Vietnam. Son was one of the coolest tour guides I’ve met, so friendly and knowledgable, and his English is really good, too – not to mention he’s funny. Driving through the Hai Van pass from Hue to Da Nang was such a great experience, and would’ve been a lot less interesting if I had been alone…

it was a great tour, been to many nice places such as Hai Van Pass, My Son, Hoi An, Hue … further to that, super friendly staff with hospitality is there to take care of you. very much enjoy. Thank you Angelina Ms and A Travel Mate

CENTRAL VIETNAM TOUR SUMMARY & ITINERARY:

Duration:  4 days

Highlights:  Hindu temples – ancient relics – royal palaces, tombs

Route:  Da Nang – Hoi An – Hue

DETAILED ITINERARY:

Day 1: da nang arrival.

We pick you up at the Da Nang airport and drive you to your hotel in Hoi An and to do hotel check in. You may enjoy the rest of the day to explore the town on your own.

Day 2: My Son Holy Land – Hoi An ancient town Full Day

My Son Holy Land

We will arrive to receive you at the hotel and drive you to My Son Holy Land to begin the day tour. One of the primary parts of the Central Vietnam is this location. Therefore, My Son served as the former spiritual hub of the Cham people and the former Champa Empire. Numerous red brick castles and sanctuaries from the seventh and thirteenth centuries can be seen in a lush green valley of this fascinating place.

We will tour My Son to observe the skill and magnificent building art of the Champa people. We will also understand how Cham people constructed the temples without using mortar or cement. The temples are surprisingly still standing strong despite having been constructed in the seventh century. My Son is made up of numerous groups of A, B, C, D, G, E, F, and H, many of which are undergoing restoration. When you visit My Son, you will breathe in the fresh air of the forest and immerse yourself in the lush beauty of nature.

Afterwards, we will enjoy Cham dance show to know about Cham culture. We then proceed back to Hoi An.

Hoi An Ancient Town

After that, we return to Hoi An so you can eat lunch there. Following up on is take a trip through the historic district of Hoi An in the afternoon, visiting the Chinese Assembly Hall, the ancient homes of Tan Ky and Quan Thang, and the 400-year-old Japanese covered bridge. As a result, we will have a thorough grasp of how the three Oriental architectural styles of China, Vietnam, and Japan were combined. We also go to the central market in Hoi An to get a better way of the life of the locals. After that, we return you to the hotel.

Day 3 :  Marble Mountains – Hue city

Marble Mountains

In the morning, we come to collect you up from the hotel and take you to Hue ancient capital. We will stop at the Marble Mountains along the journey. These five marble peaks are thought to stand for five Chinese elements of water, wood, fire, metal, and earth.

Upon arriving, we ascend some stairs and visit the neighboring Linh Ung temple and large Buddha statue as well as the Xa Loi pagoda. Next is Van Thong cave and final to the most beautiful Huyen Khong cave, which served as a hospital during the war, will be our next stop. Climb stairs to have a good view of the marble village.

The tour continues with a pleasant drive through Da Nang city before arriving to Hai Van Pass, often known as the Pass of the Ocean Clouds. As we travel along this beautiful pass route, we’ll stop a few times to take pictures of the pass and of Lang Co beach.

Arrive at Hue, we will begin Hue city tour with a sightseeing to Hue Citadel, a UNESCO World Heritage site. This magnificent citadel has a 500 hectare size and a system of three rounds of ramparts: Citadel, Imperial city and Forbidden city. After that, we have a stroll and view some of highlights here such as Noon Gate, Thai Hoa Palace, Royal Theatre, and Truong Sanh Temples. After that, we’ll take you out for lunch at a neighborhood eatery before going to the Thien Mu Pagoda, which serves as Hue’s unofficial symbol.

Thien Mu Pagoda, which is situated on a tiny hill with a view of the Perfume River, is a sacred site for Buddhists in Hue and the surrounding area. This was where Superior Thich Quang Duc drove his car for his self-immolation in Saigon in 1963.

Following that is a visit to the Tu Duc Tomb, which was constructed between 1864 and 1867 and features Buddism and Confucianism ideas of construction. The mausoleum is one of the primary tourist attractions in Hue, located in a lush garden with numerous temples and lakes.

Day 4: Airport Departure

Finally, check out at the hotel in Hue and we will transfer you to the airport. Then our Central Vietnam Tour will come to an end here.

Central Vietnam Guide: 7 Must-Visit Destinations Await!

Central Vietnam is full of memorable destinations, from the beautiful beaches and fishing villages on the South Central Coast to the coffee plantations and stunning scenery of the Central Highlands. It also has a rich culture to explore, with more ethnic minorities in the area than any other part of Vietnam and plenty of ancient historical sites dotting the landscape.

Are you looking to explore Central Vietnam, but not sure where to start? Look no further! In this guide, we’ll show you seven must-visit destinations in the region. To make planning your trip easier, we’ve divided the destinations into areas, so you can map out your itinerary from north to south. Whether you’re a history buff or a nature lover, Central Vietnam has something for everyone.

Table of Contents

Northern central coast.

The Northern Central Coast of Vietnam is a treasure trove of history. Starting with artifacts and relevant sites from the Vietnam War and stretching all the way back to the ancient history you’ll find in the largest cave in the world.

1. Hue: The Citadel & Perfume River

central vietnam

Hue used to be the capital of Vietnam during the days of the Nguyen Dynasty from 1802 to 1945. Because of that, the Hue Citadel is one of Vietnam’s most majestic examples of pre-colonial architecture. The Citadel of the Ancient City is usually peaceful and serene. Still, the area around the imperial city is generally alive with historical and cultural experiences, from traditional music shows to museums. If you want to avoid the rainy season and try to catch some festivals in Hue, you can check out  the best time to visit Hue here.

The area of Hue surrounding Central City is known for its romantic landscapes. The most famous is the Perfume River, which winds directly through the city and gets its name from the aromatic flowers from the orchards upstream that fall into the river during the autumn months. The Perfume River has great spiritual, cultural, and historical significance for the city, and a cruise on the Perfume River is the most scenic way to enjoy the vistas of romantic Hue. After a cruise down the Perfume River, head to the nearby Thien Mu Pagoda to enjoy the sunset. Or drive over the Hai Van Pass to Lang Co Beach.

Explore Hue: Discover top attractions, local cuisine, tours, and the best places to stay.

2. Quang Binh Province: Phong Nha and Dong Hoi

central vietnam

The main attraction of Quang Binh province in Central Vietnam is Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park. The UNESCO Heritage Site is home to the world’s largest cave, Son Doong Cave. Son Doong is part of a massive cave system that includes Paradise Cave, also known as Thien Duong Cave. Phong Nha-Ke Bang also contains unique karst landscapes, scenic waterways, and incredible biodiversity.

The most incredible experience in Phong Nha is exploring its caves, set amidst lush jungles and fresh rivers. For those keen on delving into this adventurer’s paradise and learning more about the caves and tours, check out  ‘Phong Nha Cave Tours: Explore Central Vietnam’s UNESCO Wonders.’ . But beyond the caves, there’s an untouched, rural beauty to be discovered in Phong Nha.

Dong Hoi is a small city beside Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park with an airport and train station that connects to other major cities in Vietnam. It’s certainly not a metropolis, but its small size only adds to its quaint charm. Dong Hoi is an ideal stopover and resting place before conquering trekking and caving expeditions in the nearby national park. PRO TIP:  If you’re looking for some beautiful hidden gems in the North Central Coast, head up to the mountains, rivers, and long coastline of Thanh Hoa Province to check out Pu Luong Nature Reserve, Cua Lo Beach, and Sam Son Beach.

Central Coast

The Central Coastal region of Vietnam may be the most popular part of the country for those trying to escape the intensity of Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City because they are two of the top destinations in Vietnam.

central vietnam

Da Nang, the unofficial capital city of Central Vietnam, merges natural beauty with its cityscape in a way few other cities in the world do. The population of Da Nang City is over 1.1 million, but the town itself is built around beautiful beaches and forests. For example, My Khe Beach, often hailed as one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, is located beside one of the city’s main strips of road.

tours in da nang5 - Central Vietnam Guide: 7 Must-Visit Destinations Await!

Even though it’s a naturally beautiful city, Da Nang visitors can still find a strong dose of that excitement they can see in big cities. For example,  Da Nang’s nightlife scene  is booming. Check out some  popular tours in Da Nang  and the surrounding area.

The area around Da Nang is amazingly beautiful, too. For instance, the Marble Mountains, located about 45 minutes drive from Da Nang, are one of Central Vietnam’s greatest natural wonders and overlook Non Nuoc beach, a serene getaway for those looking for some sand and sea.

tours in da nang3 - Central Vietnam Guide: 7 Must-Visit Destinations Await!

And then there’s Hai Van Pass, a world-famous mountain pass with perhaps one of Southeast Asia’s best panoramic views that displays Central Vietnam’s lush beauty. Hai Van is partly in Da Nang and partly in Hue.

Explore Da Nang: Discover tours, top attractions, local cuisine, and the best places to stay.

4. Hoi An Ancient Town – UNESCO World Heritage Site

what to buy in hoi an2 - Central Vietnam Guide: 7 Must-Visit Destinations Await!

It’s not a controversial statement to say that Hoi An is one of the most beautiful towns in Asia, an idea reinforced by UNESCO’s decision to make it a World Heritage site in 1999. Situated in Quang Nam province, Da Nang’s neighbor.

The old town feels quaint and buzzing with energy, largely thanks to its well-preserved historical architecture that mixes indigenous and foreign influences, diverse cultural influences, and its unique heritage. An evening walk along the Thu Bon River in the center of the ancient town, while colored lanterns line both banks, is one of the quintessential Vietnamese activities you’ll find.

Hoi An is also a hub for upscale shopping, cultural experiences like pottery-making, finding unique street food, and more. There are many fascinating day trips from Hanoi, like the My Son Sanctuary, another World Heritage Site, or Cua Dai Beach, a seaside sanctuary just minutes from Hoi An known for its soft sand and peaceful atmosphere. Really, this town has everything you could want as a traveler in Vietnam. Experience it all with the  Hoi An Sunset Tour  and more popular  Hoi An activities .

Pro Tip:  Alongside Cua Dai Beach’s soft sands and clear waters, Hoi An boasts other stunning beaches. An Bang Beach is known for its calm vibe and beachside cafes, while Ha My Beach offers secluded serenity. The Cham Islands are perfect for snorkeling enthusiasts, and Bai Rang Beach presents a rustic charm. For sunsets and seafood, Tan Thanh Beach is a must-visit. Each beach around Hoi An enhances its appeal as a destination of natural beauty and cultural richness.

Southern Central Coast

As you travel further south down the coast of Vietnam, you’ll encounter some beautiful beach towns.

5. Nha Trang Beach –  Khanh Hoa Province

best restaurants nha trang vietnam

Nha Trang is Vietnam’s premier beach city. It brings together the laid-back and traditionally more liberal culture of Southern Vietnam with the more conservative culture of Central Vietnam. It’s also great for sun-kissed days, snorkeling, diving, and other watersports. Nha Trang Beach, located at the center of the city, is probably the epicenter for the endless amount of aquatically-based attractions in the city, such as:

  • VinWonders, a huge waterpark.
  • Multiple aquariums, the most popular of which is Vinpearl Aquarium.
  • Hon Mun Marine Protected Area.
  • Thap Ba Hotsprings.
  • Local fishing villages.

Nha Trang is also known for having some of Vietnam’s tastiest seafood. For an optimal experience, look up some of  the best restaurants in Nha Trang with a sea view here.

6. Quy Nhon Beachside City

Kho island Quy Nhon. Photo by VIA Ambassador Le Van Anh Tai - Central Vietnam Guide: 7 Must-Visit Destinations Await!

Quy Nhon is a peaceful getaway for those who want to soak up as much relaxation vibes as possible, as it’s not a bustling tourist destination like Nha Trang. The town’s architectural style is traditional Vietnamese through and through, and the locals tend to exude an atmosphere of Southern hospitality that most travelers love. The town’s biggest assets, though, are its beautiful beaches. Ky Co Beach, Bai Xep Beach, and Quy Hoa Beach are a few of the most popular, boasting pristine sands and crystal-clear water.

Discover Quy Nhon: Discover tours, top attractions, local cuisine, and the best places to stay.

PRO TIP:  After Quy Nhon, head south to Phu Yen, where you can explore hidden gem attractions like Ghenh Da Dia, a stretch of basalt columns resembling stacked plates along the coastline. With its tranquil beaches and charming rural areas, this province offers a refreshing retreat for travelers seeking a serene and authentic Vietnamese experience.

The Central Highlands

Tia River one of most cinematic places in Da Lat. Photo by Do Phan Anh - Central Vietnam Guide: 7 Must-Visit Destinations Await!

The Highlands lie on the inland side of the Annamite Mountains, so they’re an opportunity for travelers to trade in the ocean breezes of the coastal regions for some mountain air.

The Highlands are home to some of the most beautiful landscapes in Central Vietnam due to the rolling hills that characterize the area. The extreme ethnic diversity of the region, fronted by the hill tribes dotting the countryside, also helps give it a rugged feel that the parts of Vietnam that are closer to sea level do not offer. The Highlands also have a pleasantly cool climate for much of the year that is more similar to what travelers might expect from a visit to the Swiss Alps than what they usually get in tropical Vietnam.

Da Quy flowers season in Da Lat. Photos by Sam Sam - Central Vietnam Guide: 7 Must-Visit Destinations Await!

Da Lat is the only big city in Central Vietnam’s Highlands. Even though the population is only 425,000, the city gets around 7 million tourists most years.

It’s easy to see why, too: it’s got the same cool climate as the rest of the Highlands, beautiful vistas, natural beauty nestled right into the city, and some of the most flavorful yet distinct cuisine in any part of Vietnam.  Check out this article to discover the must-try local dishes in Dalat before you visit.

Da Lat offers many activities for visitors to indulge in. You could sip coffee while enjoying the stunning natural beauty, kayaking or trekking in the mountains, visit waterfalls and pagodas, or even experience glamping.

The city also boasts several luxurious activity centers like golf courses, shopping malls, and well-manicured gardens and parks.

Discover Dalat: Discover tours, top attractions, local cuisine, and the best places to stay.

Hidden Gems in Central Vietnam

Besides the must-visit destinations mentioned here, there’s a lot to explore in Central Vietnam. For those who have time, renting a mountain bike or a motorbike and wandering around the highways and byways of Quang Nam Province, Khanh Hoa Province, Phu Yen Province, and Thanh Hoa Province is an amazing way to experience what authentic Central Vietnam is really about. And who knows, you may stumble upon some romantic scenery or hidden gems that make your experience in Central Vietnam even more memorable.

Central Vietnam is Waiting

Central Vietnam beautifully merges ancient cities, stunning coastlines, and the lush highlands, offering a perfect mix of nature, history, and culture. As you plan your journey, consider venturing both to popular tourist spots and off-the-beaten-path hidden gems. This region has something special for every traveler.

Nature and trekking lovers should not miss Phong Nha and Dalat, each offering unique landscapes and adventures. For a touch of historical magic, Hoi An’s ancient town is a must-see, while Hue’s ancient citadel is a treasure trove for culture and history enthusiasts. And for those who long for sandy shores, Da Nang, Nha Trang, and Quy Nhon are ideal beach destinations. In Central Vietnam, every destination promises an unforgettable experience. From ancient cities to stunning coastlines and hidden gems along the way.

An Exciting Central Vietnam 1 Week Itinerary To Experience

Colorful Hien Nhon Gate (East Gate) which leads to the Imperial City in Hue, Vietnam

Planning a trip to Vietnam and interested in focusing on Central Vietnam? It may be confusing on where to go since there are so many incredible places to visit. Therefore, we created the perfect Central Vietnam 1 week itinerary that you need to follow!

Central Vietnam is often overlooked and whizzed through quickly when traveling from North to South Vietnam . We’ve traveled to Central Vietnam a few times, especially since we live in this country , and love this area.

The top reasons to visit are fewer crowds compared to Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City (where we live) and tons of fun and exciting things to do such as visiting gorgeous beaches and UNESCO recognized historical sites and eating delicious food (Central Vietnamese flavors is our favorite!)

Without further ado, continue reading this post on how to spend 1 week in Central Vietnam . With this Central Vietnam 1 week itinerary, we’re off to explore the cities – Danang, Hoi An, Hue, and other hidden gems in the area and sharing the top things to do here.

A full week tour isn’t necessary, but you’re welcome to take day tours in each of the locations. We’ve recommended some tours below. Regardless, it’ll be an exciting vacation visiting these Central Vietnam attractions.

Vietnam Visa Information

Visitors will need to check in advance if they need to apply for a visa . Visas are not available on arrival as you need to have an approval letter to enter. Check this list to see if e-Visa is available for your country.

If you’re a U.S. citizen, you can apply for a single entry e-Visa which will expedite your entrance through immigration. It’ll take at least 1 week to process your e-Visa.

**At the time of publishing, Vietnam has not opened its borders to international tourists. We will continue to monitor the situation and update this itinerary accordingly.

When to Go to Central Vietnam

Central Vietnam has two seasons to consider – dry and wet.

The dry season is from January to August and the weather is very hot and humid. Temperatures are in the mid 30 °C (86°F and above ). There is some occasional rain, as we’ve been caught in the rain during our visit to Danang in May, but it doesn’t last all day.

The wet, rainy season is from September to November. The rain tends to be heavier and prone to flooding so you may want to avoid these months.

If you’re starting your Vietnam trip from either Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, or other areas, the easiest way to get to Danang is to take a domestic flight to Danang International Airport (airport code: DAD). It’s a major international airport in the country.

The flight from Ho Chi Minh City to Danang takes 1.5 hours one-way, while from Hanoi, it’s 1 hour and 20 minutes. Check out the flight deals on Vietnam Airlines, VietJet Air, or Bamboo Airways.

International flights are also available to Danang International Airport. Examples of cities that depart to Danang are:

  • Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
  • Seoul – Incheon and Busan, South Korea
  • Hong Kong and Macau, China

Click here to see the list of airlines that fly to Danang.

How to Travel Around Central Vietnam

Once you arrive in Danang, you can take a taxi or take a Grab car or motorbike to your destination. Grab is a popular ride-hailing app in Southeast Asia and one of the best apps to use when you’re traveling around Vietnam .

If you know how to ride a motorbike, you can also consider renting one for a few days. Remember to wear a helmet and drive slowly. We wouldn’t want you to get pulled over by the police for speeding and then you have to give “coffee money” (also as a bribe) as payment.

Hiring a private driver is also an option for longer distances.

Check out our Vietnam transportation guide to learn more tips.

Central vietnam itinerary – days 1-3: danang.

We’re starting the itinerary in Danang ( Đà Nẵng in Vietnamese) as it’s the fifth-largest city in Vietnam. It’s a popular place to visit as you have access to clean beaches, gorgeous views of the oceans, and conveniently located to other historical sites in the area.

Since there are plenty of attractions to visit, we recommend that you spend 3 days in Danang. While we’re providing a snapshot of the top attractions to visit in Danang, check out our in-depth Danang 3 days itinerary to learn more.

How to Get to Danang City Center from the Airport

Once you land, head through immigration if you’re traveling from an international airline. Afterward, catch a taxi or Grab car and head to your accommodations to drop off your luggage. The airport is located in the center of the city so it’ll take about 15-20 minutes by car to travel within the city.

What to Do in Danang

1. head to the beaches and relax all day long ..

You’re on vacation so it’s time to veg out! Two popular beaches are My Khe and Non Nuoc . They are clean and have fine beige sand. There is plenty of space for you to relax under the umbrellas and lawn chairs. Just remember to stay hydrated as the weather can be HOT.

2. Visit the two amusement parks – Ba Na Hills and Danang Wonders.

Ba Na Hills is a must-visit as it’s a European-inspired theme park located on top of a hill. It has the famous Golden Bridge (also referred to as Golden Hands Bridge), the two stone hands holding up a golden bridge. There are also shows, rides, games, and other fun entertainment activities.  It’s recommended to buy your tickets in advance here .

Check out our Ba Na Hills guide on how to visit this place.

Overview of the Sun World Ba Na Hills Golden Bridge. You'll see two giant stone hands holding up the golden walkway.

Here is the famous Golden Bridge at Ba Na Hills with fewer crowds. Photo taken around 7:40am.

Another theme park to visit is Danang Wonders and is suited for those who love roller coasters and rides. You may notice a large Ferris Wheel illuminating in the middle of the city at night, and this is where the park is located. The park focuses on Asian countries so you can visit Singapore, Cambodia, Thailand, Japan, and more. It’s a smaller scale of Disney World’s Epcot.

Read our Danang Wonders guide for more travel tips.

3. check out the free evening show at the dragon bridge ..

You’ll see the dragon breathing fire for a few minutes. The show occurs on Saturday and Sunday at 9:00pm.

4. Shop and eat street food at Son Tra Night Market.

This is the go-to spot after watching the show at the Dragon Bridge. Eat your way through the market or buy souvenirs here.

5. Take a short hike up Marble Mountains to see gorgeous views of the landscape and the city.

Marble Mountains comprises five elements – water, metal, earth, fire, and wood, and the main mountain is water. You can either walk up the mountain for some exercise or take the elevator. At the top of the mountain, check out the other mountains based on the elements from the Sea Watching Tower and walk through caves and pagodas.

Since this place is south of Danang, you can visit this place before heading to Hoi An.

Mable Mountains is a must-see attraction to visit when you’re in Danang

Danang Accommodations

Danang has plenty of hotels, guesthouses, and resorts to suit all budgets.

If you want the stay next to or within walking distance to the beach, it’s recommended that you stay in My Khe area. Also, note that the resorts are spread out so you may need to take a taxi or Grab car if you want to head to the touristy areas for food and shopping.

Check out where to stay in Danang here.

Central Vietnam Itinerary – Day 4: Hoi An

On your fourth day in Central Vietnam, we’re headed to Hoi An ( Hội An ). It’s one of the best places to visit in Central Vietnam. Hoi An is a former trade port city due to the Thu Bon River flowing through the Ancient Town (also referred to as Old Town) area. Currently, it’s a picturesque area with architectural influences from Asian and European countries. Plus, this city was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1999.

Since the area is small, we’re spending one full day here. If you want to spend more time in this quaint area, you can consider spending 2-3 days visiting beaches and Cham Islands .

How to Get to Hoi An from Danang

Hoi An is 25 kilometers (15.5 miles) away from Danang, so it’ll take 40 minutes to arrive there by car or taxi. You can also take a Grab car or hire a private driver to get to Hoi An. Since this city is close by, you can either take a day trip from Danang or spend the night in Hoi An.

What to Do in Hoi An

1. wander around the ancient town ..

It’s a walkable area as vehicles are not allowed. You’ll find endless streets filled with buildings painted in vibrant yellow and other colors, boutique shops selling artwork, handicrafts, jewelry, and clothes. Other attractions include the Phuoc Kien Pagoda, Museum of Folk Culture Museum, and traditional houses.

There is a fee of 120,000 VND to walk around the Ancient Town and to access 6 local sites.  You can purchase this ticket at the kiosks around the Ancient Town.

If you’re short on time, consider taking a walking tour of the area.

Hoi An, Vietnam is a charming city with yellow buildings and a river that has boats.

2. Take a photo of the iconic Japanese bridge.

The bridge was built in 1719 and by Japanese merchants living in the area to connect between the former Japanese and Chinese areas. crowded throughout the day. The bridge isn’t long as you can walk across it in 30 seconds, yet it gets crowded with people throughout the day. If you prefer to not have crowds in your photo, then you’ll need to get to Hoi An early in the morning.

3. Shop till you drop!

From beautiful silk lanterns to the fruit Hawaiian shirts and dresses, you’re bound to buy unique and practical souvenirs for yourself, family members, and friends. Check out the evening night markets for more souvenir items. Don’t forget to bargain at the night markets!

A store in Hoi An Ancient Town selling souvenirs such as silk lanterns, handbags, ceramic pots, and more.

Hoi An is the perfect place to go souvenir shopping.

4. Get tailored clothes and shoes in Hoi An.

If you have difficulties with finding formal suits, dress pants, or dresses, consider getting tailored clothes. There are hundreds of tailors to choose from in Ancient Town so you can visit various tailors to compare materials and pricing. You may even consider getting an ao dai ( áo dài ), a traditional Vietnamese outfit.

Tip: You’ll need at least 2-3 days to get your clothes made due to the multiple fittings. You may consider extending your stay in Hoi An so the tailor doesn’t feel rushed with completing your clothes.

Hoi An Accommodations

If you plan to stay in Hoi An for the evening, there are many affordable guesthouses to choose from around the Ancient Town area.

Check out where to stay in Hoi An here.

Central Vietnam Itinerary – Day 5: Hue

Hue ( Huế ) is the former capital of Vietnam from 1802 to 1945. If you love learning history and seeing the lifestyle of the former Nguyen Dynasty, then you’ll enjoy visiting Hue. There are many incredible architectures and monuments to admire here so you’ll need to maximize your 1 day in Hue.

How to Get to Hue from Danang or Hoi An

One of the exciting ways to get from Danang to Hue is to take a motorbike tour of the Hai Van Pass . The route is 21 kilometers (13 miles) that is full of windy roads and gorgeous landscapes along the way.  If you decide to take the tour, you’ll need to extend your day in Hue as this is an all-day tour.

From Hoi An to Hue, it’s recommended to hire a car .

What to Do in Hue

1. explore the imperial city..

This is the most famous landmark of Hue as it’s a UNESCO recognized area. The Imperial City is a 4-sided walled area that is surrounded by a moat. The citadel area has a Purple Forbidden City that is similar to Beijing’s Forbidden City. The Forbidden City is where the Emperor and his family and colleagues lived and worked.

Outside the Forbidden City, there are plenty of beautiful pagodas, gates, and architecture to admire. Our featured photo is of the Hien Nhon Gate (East gate) that leads to the Imperial City.

You can spend hours exploring the Imperial City so you’ll need some good walking shoes. You can walk around on your own but it’s recommended taking a tour for more historical context .

2. Visit the iconic Thien Mu Pagoda, also known as the Celestial Lady Pagoda .

This 7-story Buddhist pagoda was built in 1601. You can walk around the pagoda and also check out the views of the Perfume River. There is free admission so you can visit at any time of the day.

A 7-storied pagoda with Chinese architecture at Thien Mu Pagoda in Hue, Vietnam

When visiting Hue, add Thien Mu Pagoda to your itinerary.

3. Visit Khai Dinh Tomb.

Khai Dinh was the 12th emperor and had this place built from 1920 to 1931. He worked closely with the French government so the design of his tomb has Vietnamese and French influences.

Khai Dinh Tomb is one of the most intriguing places to visit in Hue. The complex has multi-tiers so it requires some stair climbing.

Tip: You’ll need to climb over 100 stairs to get to the first tier of the complex. If you have knee problems, it’s best to avoid this place as there aren’t any escalators.

The top tier, also known as the Thien Dinh Palace, has mosaic artwork on the walls made out of ceramic and porcelain. The artwork is bright, colorful, a bit gaudy at times, but captivating to look at. You can also check out the life-size statue of Khai Dinh.

Khai Dinh Tomb is a unique place to visit when you’re in Hue.

4. Eat delicious street food.

Check out the foods that originated from Hue, such as steamed rice cakes ( bánh bèo ) and beef noodle soup ( bún bò Huế ). If you’re not sure where to go, take this walking street food tour.

Hue Accommodations

Hue has various guesthouses and hotels to consider depending on your budget.

Check out where to stay in Hue here.

Central Vietnam Itinerary – Day 6-7: Departure or Free Time to Visit Other Cities

It’s your last two days in Central Vietnam. Depending on your itinerary, you can either return to Danang from Hue and catch your departing flight or consider visiting other areas of Central Vietnam.

1. Ly Son Island

Ly Son Island ( Đảo Lý Sơn ) is one of Vietnam’s hidden gems as it’s not visited by foreign tourists. For now, the island is quiet and has a calm ambiance. The infrastructure is growing to develop tourism in the future.

This island is known for growing Ly Son garlic which is small, white bulbs that have a mild flavor. Plus, they are grown in volcanic soil. Other fun attractions to do on Ly Son Island is to snorkel, ride a motorbike around the island, and hike Gieng Tien Mountain.

To get to Ly Son Island from Danang, you’ll need to travel to Quang Ngai’s Sa Ky Port. It’ll take 2.5 hours (160 kilometers / 99 miles) by car or 2 hours by train. Once you arrive at the port, take a speedboat to the island.

Check out our Ly Son Island guide for more information.

Garlic fields on Ly Son Island, Vietnam

When visiting Ly Son Island, check out the garlic fields along the road.

2. Quy Nhon

Want more beach time in addition to what you had in Danang? Head to Quy Nhon ( Quy Nhơn or Qui Nhơn). It’s a low-key city and not as touristy compared to the other cities that you visited earlier in the itinerary.

There are many beaches to lounge around, historical landmarks such as the Cham Towers, amazing seafood, and other fun activities to spend a few days here. We recommend that you visit Ky Co Beach for clean beaches and snorkeling opportunities.

Read our things to do in Quy Nhon post for more ideas on what to do here.

To get to Quy Nhon from Danang, it’s recommended to take the bus for 8 hours, train for 6 hours, or to take a domestic flight to Phu Cat Airport (airport code: UIH). Driving would be the fastest way as it’ll take over 4 hours.

Quy Nhon Beach is located in the heart of the city, so it's a popular spot to exercise and to swim in the ocean.

Quy Nhon Beach is a popular beach for tourists and locals to visit.

3. Phong Nha

Phong Nha is the go-to place for adventure seekers. The main draw is visiting the Phong Nha Ke Be National Park and to see the famous caves and limestone formations , such as Paradise Cave and Phong Nha Cave.

Son Doong Cave is considered the largest cave in the world. The tour to explore this cave is expensive and costs over $3,000 USD per person as only one company is allowed to operate the tour.

An alternative is to explore Hang En Cave , the third-largest cave in the world. It’s also a memorable hiking trail to experience in Vietnam ! The cost of this trekking tour is more reasonable and starts at $330 per person. We went on this tour and had a fantastic experience.

Check out other caves to explore here .

Plan to spend a minimum of 2 days on your Phong Nha itinerary going on adventures. You can also spend a day riding a bicycle or a motorbike to explore Bong Lai Valley , a rural place from Phong Nha town.

To get to Phong Nha from Danang, it’s recommended to take a domestic flight to Dong Hoi Airport (airport code: VDH). It’ll take 4 hours since it stops in either Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City. Or, you can take a train from Dong Hoi City or a sleeper bus that’ll take 5 hours.
