The Best Day Trips from La Paz, Bolivia

La Paz

La Paz has become increasingly popular over recent years, not just for its stunning topography and fascinating indigenous culture, but also for the numerous awesome day trips just a stone’s throw away. From high altitude hikes through glacial mountains to death defying bike rides through steamy tropical valleys, learn about the very best short excursions this bustling metropolis has to offer.

1. the death road.

An extreme attraction that has become extremely popular. Throttle a mountain bike down a treacherously narrow road that has been given the unenviable moniker of being the most dangerous in the world. With sheer drop offs of several hundred feet, random assortments of jagged rocks and the occasional oncoming bus to contend with, this bike ride is guaranteed to get the adrenaline pumping. Be careful though, as it’s called the Death Road for a reason. The trip must be done with a tour company and Gravity are the best of the lot.

2. Valley de la Luna

Known as the Moon Valley in English, upon entering this surreal nature park it’s not hard to see why. A short but enjoyable series of walking trails lead through a maze of bizarre rock formations, the work of millions of years of erosion. This classic half day excursion can be part of a tour ; head there by taxi for around 35BOB ($US5) or any bus heading to Mallasa for 2.60BS (US$.040).

3. Cañon de Palca

Not far from the city center lies Palca, where a tranquil rural paddock opens up into a spectacular canyon that is brimming with surreal formations of eroded sedimentary rock. The canyon goes on for miles, with plenty of twists and turns, waterfalls and streams. Most people visit on a guided tour to avoid getting lost, but those who prefer a little seclusion can get there by jumping on any minibus (2BOB/US$0.30) heading south (marked Ovejuyo or Palca) and asking the driver where to hop off.

5. Tiwanaku

5. Tiwanaku

This expansive pre-Columbian city was built by the most powerful indigenous empire of the time, who out date even the mighty Inca. The two hour drive is worth it to explore this fascinating archaeological site with its intricately carved stone faces, impossibly large building blocks and the monolithic Puerta del Sol (Sun Gate), believed to be an early astrological calendar. Tours depart daily, or jump on a bus heading to Desaguadero from the Cementerio district in La Paz and get off at the Tiwanaku intersection.

6. El Alto Market

7. Cholita Wrestling

Sunday evenings play host to one of the country’s weirdest and most wonderful sporting events. A crowd of dedicated locals and curious travelers come together to cheer on a group of feisty Cholitas (indigenous women) as they punch, kick and body slam men who are representative of their abusive husbands. Despite the somber theme, it’s a rowdy and colorful affair that draws in many a laugh from an appreciative crowd. Most people go on a tour but it’s possible to get their via the red cable car line.

SALAR DE UYUNI VIA SAJAMA – 3 DAYS TOUR FROM LA PAZ

SALAR DE UYUNI VIA SAJAMA – 3 DAYS TOUR FROM LA PAZ

From the bustling city of La Paz to the desolate and awe-inspiring Salar de Uyuni high in the Andes, no need to make the long way to the town of Uyuni to enjoy the wonders of the Bolivian highlands. This alternative 3-day Salar de Uyuni tour starting in La Paz provides everything the classic 3-day tour does (namely lagoons, deserts, mountains, geysers, hot springs, Andean wildlife and not only one, but two pristine salt flats with no crowds) without the need of taking a bus/plane/train to Uyuni nor making the long drive to the remote southwest.

la paz day tours

ITINERARY DRY SEASON (MID APRIL TO DECEMBER)

Sajama national park.

Instead of having to make the long (often overnight) way to the town of Uyuni, our adventure starts right in the city of La Paz (Bolivia’s administrative capital and starting point for most trips in the country). Upon an early morning meeting, we make our way out into the vast countryside driving along a modern highway en route to Sajama National Park .

Sajama National Park is named after Bolivia’s highest peak Mt. Sajama (6.542m) and is one of the country’s best kept secrets. Lying along the border with Chile, this protected area boasts spectacular snowcapped mountains, striking desolate deserts, high Andean lagoons, traditional villages, pristine rivers, natural hot springs, boiling volcanic geysers, vast wetlands, unique flora, native fauna (alpaca, llama, vicuña, Andean ostrich, viscacha, flamingo and other species of birds) and friendly, welcoming people.

Our morning drive from La Paz to Sajama National Park is not without interesting stops at natural places such as deserts, wetlands teeming with wildlife, rivers and cultural sites such as ancient tombs and quaint, colonial churches. A full afternoon is spent contemplating the striking landscapes, walking among boiling geysers, taking small hikes in the mountains and bathing in the natural hot springs with stunning views of Bolivia’s highest peak.

We sleep either in the community-run and ecotourism venture of Tomarapi or in more basic accommodation in the village of Sajama . Regardless of your place of choice, we enjoy a well-deserved rest in one of Bolivia’s most isolated and off the beaten track regions.

ACCOMMODATION BASIC: Basic lodge. MEALS LUNCH, DINNER

SAJAMA TO UYUNI: DESERTS, LAGOONS, COIPASA SALT FLATS AND ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITES

The second day of our expedition brings us south into the remote and rural highlands. Get off the beaten path by visiting secluded lagoons filled with pink, Andean flamingo as well as colorful and remote archaeological sites. View traditional villages and thousands of cute alpacas, llamas, vicuñas (wild) among green pastures and barren deserts. Enjoy a scenic lunch in prime nature and continue your drive south bound for Salar de Uyuni for a stunning sunset not before having Salar de Coipasa (second largest only to Salar de Uyuni) for ourselves – 3.000 square kilometers of pure salt – in the afternoon. We also get to visit an ancient burial site where we embrace the remains of past cultures as part of a moderate hike to break the long drive of the day.

* Today is a long day's drive. You will climb aboard our vehicle at around 6 am and arrive at your accommodation around 6 pm. We do provide several opportunities for breaks and short walks during the day (you don't spend the whole time in the vehicle) but do expect long hours of driving. If you would like to do the exact same program but with plenty more time and hiking opportunities, take our Salar de Uyuni from La Paz 4-Day Trip.

ACCOMMODATION BASIC: Simple lodge with shared bathroom. Hot, shared shower. IMPORTANT: Please click/tap here for details and pictures STANDARD: Simple salt lodge with private room/bathroom and hot shower. IMPORTANT: Please click/tap here for details and pictures PLUS: Salt Hotel TAYKA DE SAL or TAMBO COQUESA in the order of availability.

MEALS BREAKFAST, LUNCH, DINNER

UYUNI SALT FLATS FULL DAY

Today sees us enjoying the trip’s grand finale with an early sunrise drive into the mesmerizing Uyuni Salt Flats . Few places in the planet can offer such a surreal start of the day that you will never forget. After sunrise, return to our accommodation for a warm breakfast and get prepared to spend a full day exploring the world’s largest salt flats. Today’s activities include hiking in Isla Incahuasi (giant cacti island), taking our time for fun, deep-perspective photographs, enjoying lunch in the middle of the salt flats, learning about salt mining, visiting the former salt hotel “Playa Blanca” by the international flag stand and more surprises in store for you with the added advantage of almost no crowds since we will be doing the trip in a different direction from most people.

End this trip of a lifetime upon arrival in the town of Uyuni from where you can take an overnight bus or quick flight back to La Paz or arrange further travel to Potosi/Sucre.

ACCOMMODATION NONE

MEALS BREAKFAST, LUNCH

ITINERARY RAINY SEASON (JANUARY TO MID APRIL)

Sajama to uyuni.

The second day of our expedition brings us south en route to Salar de Uyuni. Most of the day will be spent traveling by vehicle from Sajama to Uyuni with several stops at natural geological formations such as the “stone valley”, small lagoons and scenic viewpoints along the highway (during the rainy season, the usual route taken in the dry season is inaccessible, including Salar de Coipasa). Although it is a long day covering a long distance, the journey will have several stops before reaching the town of Colchani (Plus package) or Uyuni (Basic and Standard) for a well-deserved rest after a long day of travel.

ACCOMMODATION BASIC: BASIC HOSTEL IN THE TOWN OF UYUNI WITH PRIVATE ROOM BUT SHARED BATHROOM. HOT SHOWER AVAILABLE STANDARD: HOTEL IN THE TOWN OF UYUNI WITH PRIVATE ROOM , BATHROOM AND HOT SHOWER AVAILABLE PLUS: HOTEL PALACIO DE SAL, LUNA SALADA OR CRISTAL SAMAÑA (PREFERRED ORDER. BASED ON AVAILABILITY) IMPORTANT: Please click/tap here for details and pictures

After a good night’s rest in your hotel, take your time for breakfast and a short stroll around the town of Uyuni (Basic & Standard) or venture into the salt flats if you stayed in the town of Colchani (Plus).

We will pick you up in the morning to visit the nearby train cemetery (Basic & Standard) or visit this place later in the day (Plus).

Next, drive to the village of Colchani where you will have the opportunity to walk through its colorful market and learn about salt mining in one of the rustic processing plants in the village.

Time to enter the salt flats as far as it is be possible. Typically, during the months of February to March, we are limited to the edge of the salt flats by the high level of water. However, this is enough to enjoy the “mirror” effect reflecting the sky (if the conditions are right). If possible, especially during the months of January and April, we may be able to visit Playa Blanca museum, where the Dakar monument and multinational flag stand are located.

End this experience of a lifetime upon arrival in the town of Uyuni from where you can take an overnight bus or quick flight back to La Paz or arrange further travel to Potosi/Sucre around 6 PM.

IS THIS TRIP FOR ME?

  • Ideal if you would like to be picked up in your La Paz hotel or airport
  • This trip covers the region between La Paz and Uyuni but not further south
  • Sajama National Park is not as visited as other parts of Bolivia. If you want to avoid the crowds, this is the perfect place
  • The road from Sajama to Uyuni has remote natural lagoons with flamingos but these are not the famous red or green lagoons
  • Accommodation is overall basic. You should be ready to do without modern comforts regardless of the package you choose
  • Not an ideal trip if you wish to continue to/start from San Pedro de Atacama. See our Classic 3 Day Tour instead

PLEASE NOTE THAT PARK AND OTHER SITES' ADMISSION FEES - IF APPLICABLE - ARE NOT INCLUDED IN THE PRICE (READ BELOW)

WHY TAKE THIS TRIP WITH US?

  • This trip has a perfect safety record with no accidents or serious incidents ever recorded
  • Our drivers and guides are trained to put safety as priority
  • No surcharges or hidden fees during the tour (see exclusions)
  • We are a local company with more than 8 years’ experience running this type of trips in Bolivia and Peru
  • This trip should not be considered a replacement for the classic 3-day Uyuni Salt Flats & Southwest (namely Eduardo Avaroa Reserve) tour but rather a good alternative since all the natural features seen on the classic trip can also be seen on this one, but are located in entirely different places and are not the same ones
  • This trip is ideal if you plan to return to La Paz or travel further to Potosi/Sucre after the tour
  • This trip is not ideal for you if you plan to transfer to San Pedro de Atacama, Chile. While it is still possible to do so from Uyuni town, it is advisable that you take our classic 3-day tour or our 5-day La Paz to Uyuni tour .
  • You must be ready for a long drive on the second day although plenty of stops are made
  • Our prices already include a bilingual English-speaking guide. However, you may choose to travel without one (Spanish-speaking driver and printed informational booklet) if you wish to save
  • Our different packages vary considerably in terms of accommodation quality. Note that our Plus package includes the best available hotels in the region(s) but must not be considered luxury, 4/5 star hotels

IMPORTANT INFORMATION TO CONSIDER

  • The itinerary may suffer changes without previous notice due to factors outside our direct control such as weather and road conditions. If we are forced to alter the itinerary in any way, it will be based on good judgment and necessary modifications for your own safety and comfort and you will be promptly notified. We never alter or skip attractions in the itinerary without explaining the reasoning behind any possible change and providing adequate proof that such change may be necessary. Therefore, you should not take the above itinerary as “set in stone” and we will not he held liable for any loss or damage that you may feel arising from such changes made for your benefit.
  • The Salt Flats region is a remote area that lacks the usual comforts of the modern world. You should not expect high standards of accommodation, hot water is available most of the time (according to respective package) and electricity is available for a few hours or more where possible.
  • Food is handled hygienically and it is our priority and job that you are satisfied with the limited resources available in this region. Vegetarians are welcome, but should not expect special menus as we do what we can to serve appropriate portions of vegetables and fruit in the vegetarian menu.
  • During the rainy season (December to March/April) some parts of the salt flats may be inaccessible such as Incahuasi Island and time on the actual salt flats is limited. Most of the regular itinerary is followed as normal.

The following are dates in which other people have shown interest in forming a group for this tour. 4-Day La Paz, Mexico Itinerary for Outdoor Enthusiasts

From visiting stunning beaches and a desert oasis to swimming with whale sharks, this La Paz itinerary is packed with outdoor adventure.

an aerial shot of Balanda Beach in La Paz, Baja MX

La Paz, Mexico feels like an off-the-beaten-track destination, but outdoor enthusiasts have been coming to this gorgeous capital city for ages. Situated on the Sea of Cortez in Baja California Sur, La Paz is not only home to Mexico’s most beautiful beaches, but it’s also the perfect jumping point for so many exhilarating adventures.

In just four short days, you can swim with whale sharks and sea lions, soak in hot springs, bathe below waterfalls, surf some Pacific waves, and spend a day at the beach.

This La Paz itinerary is based on my experience road-tripping around Baja California Sur, with La Paz as my home base. La Paz was my last stop on a three-month adventure around Mexico.

I quickly fell in love with the area’s rugged beauty and charm. Though Baja is known to attract a lot of Americans (both tourists and expats), La Paz itself feels so far removed from the craziness of tourist hubs like nearby Cabo San Lucas.

The city is Baja California Sur’s capital and its name means “the peace” in Spanish. Locals call themselves “pazians” (peace people in English) and La Paz certainly exudes peace despite its size. Life is slow, locals are warm, and natural beauty abounds. I hope you enjoy La Paz as much as I did.

Discover this best of the region with this 4-day adventure-packed La Paz itinerary.

Where is La Paz?

La Paz is the capital city of Baja California Sur and is located on the southern tip of the Baja Peninsula about 2.5 hours north of Cabo San Lucas. La Paz is on the Gulf of California side where the water is more calm than the Pacific side.

This La Paz itinerary works perfectly for folks flying into San José del Cabo as it starts and ends with adventures halfway between Cabo and La Paz. It also works if you fly into La Paz or are arriving via car because the day trips are just an hour or two away from La Paz.

Here is a map of the route with all of the points of interest for this 4-day La Paz itinerary.

Got extra time to spare? Consider doing a full Baja road trip – a very popular route for van lifers in the winter. You can drive all thew way down from San Diego to La Paz.

4-Day La Paz Itinerary

You will need a car for days one and four, though you can easily swap those outings for more local adventures.

As always, feel free to adjust this itinerary as much as you’d like. At the end of this guide, I mention some other things to do in La Paz so you can easily add or subtract whatever interests you most!

Day 1: Hot Springs and Waterfalls

Day one adventures take place in the Sierra Laguna mountains near the small town of Santiago, where desert terrain meets crystal-clear mountain streams and piping-hot natural springs.

Conveniently located 1.5 hours from Cabo and 2 hours from La Paz, so you can either stop in Santiago during a drive between Cabo and La Paz or just take a day trip from La Paz.

Many attractions in the Sierra Laguna are on private property, most hikes are not well documented, and phone service is minimal, so it’s important to plan ahead. Also, you’ll want some water shoes or sturdy sandals and bring plenty of water and some on-the-go snacks !

Note : For traveling in Mexico, I recommend the Grayl Ultrapress Purifier water bottle . It allows you to safely purify water from the tap (or from streams), so you can avoid buying and and using so many plastic water bottles.

I recommend splitting your time in Santiago between the Santa Rita Hot Springs and Sol de Mayo Waterfall hike. Both are located on well-established private ranches that are used to welcoming visitors (though few international tourists make it to these spots).

The two ranches are about twenty-five minutes apart, and are both about twenty minutes from the center of Santiago, on a dusty dirt road. You don’t need 4WD to drive on this road but expect some bumps. We drove it in a Toyota Corolla rental car with no issues.

Start at the Santa Rita Hot Springs , located a five-minute walk from the parking lot of Rancho Santa Rita. After paying a small entrance fee to the rancher (bring cash!), head down the pathway, passing the picnic tables.

The hot springs are located across the small bridge. In front of the bridge, you’ll find a refreshingly cool stream. Switch between the hot springs and the cool stream, and make sure to swim up the stream where a small waterfall is located.

Santa Rita hot springs in Baja, Mexico

Next, head to Rancho Ecologico Sol De Mayo, where you’ll find the gorgeous Sol de Mayo Waterfall . After you park and pay the entrance fee, the rancher will direct you to the trail. Catch stunning views of the river and waterfall above before walking about 10 minutes down to the base of the falls.

Don’t miss swimming in the calm pools beneath the waterfall and enjoy a snack before heading back to Santiago, then to La Paz. Consider stopping at Los Barriles for a seaside dinner, or hold your appetite and enjoy one of La Paz’s restaurants.

Sol de Mayo waterfall in Baja Mexico

Tip:  Some basic Spanish goes a long way in rural Mexico. Though you can certainly explore Santiago and La Paz without speaking Spanish, I recommend memorizing a few basic phrases and terms ahead of time. As always, show respect and gratitude to locals as you explore their private ranches.

Day 2: La Paz’s World-Famous Beaches

No trip to La Paz is complete without a beach day. Most visits to La Paz center around seeing Playa Balandra, which has been called the most beautiful beach in Mexico .

Playa Balandra in La Paz Baja

While Balandra Beach is certainly worth visiting, I recommend planning on visiting other La Paz beaches as well, since Balandra can get crowded and has strict opening hours .

As of November 2023, Playa Balandra typically opens from 8am-12pm, closes for an hour, and then opens again from 1pm-5pm. Entry is limited and visitors are required to leave for the one-hour break each day at noon.

Plan to arrive at 8am to ensure entry and make the most of your time. Most La Paz restaurants and coffee shops aren’t open early, so make breakfast at your hotel. Consider also packing a lunch since dining options are very limited around most La Paz beaches.

Bring a good sun hat , a packable beach towel , and potentially a pair of shoes to walk in. At Playa Balandra you can hike up the cliffs to see the bay from above, rent kayaks to explore the coves and mangroves, hike to nearby Playa El Tecolote, and walk to the famous “mushroom rock”.

After spending the morning at Balandra, head to another nearby beach to enjoy lunch, lounge on the shore, and wade in the calm, shallow water. My personal recommendation is Playa El Tesoro , a stunning beach between downtown La Paz and Balandra with a chill, local vibe, and a beach bar/restaurant.

After a few cervezas or margaritas, head back to town for dinner and a sunset walk along the La Paz Malecon (waterfront boardwalk).

Tip:  If you don’t have a car, you can get to Playa Balandra via bus, DiDi, Uber, but be sure to figure out your return trip ahead of time. You can also book a tour which includes hiking, kayaking, and snorkeling.

Day 3: swimming with whale sharks and a sunset hike.

If you visit La Paz between October and April, you’ll have the opportunity to swim with whale sharks in the Sea of Cortez. This once-in-a-lifetime experience is facilitated by local ecotourism companies and strictly regulated by the local government.

Be sure to book a whale shark boat tour with a reputable company ahead of time since the amount of people and boats is limited each day.

a woman snorkels with a whale shark

If you visit outside of whale shark season or prefer to swim with a different marine species, you can go on a boat tour to Isla Espiritu Santo , which includes snorkeling with sea lions . Just be aware that you can not jump in the water with the sea lions during their breeding season, July through August.

In addition, some tour companies offer combo tours that include swimming with whale sharks and sea lions in one day!

Most tours include lunch and return to La Paz in the early afternoon. Make sure to pack some reef-safe sunscreen , and I also recommend wearing a rashgaurd while you’re snorkeling to keep the sun off your back.

sea lions on a rock in La Paz Baja Mexico

Grab an early dinner and an hour before sunset, head to the Estación de Servicio Repsol gas station, just a few minutes north of downtown La Paz. The gas station is essentially the trailhead for the Cerro de la Calavera hike .

There are several routes to the gorgeous Cerro de la Calavera viewpoint, which overlooks the city and bay. The most direct route is what locals recommended to me, and it takes less than twenty minutes one way . However, another route recorded on AllTrails is 3.8 miles roundtrip.

Whatever route you choose, sure you have close-toed trails shoes and water . A headlamp (or phone flashlight) can also be helpful for the hike back down. Once you reach the top, be sure to watch the sunset and snap a few photos.

Day 4: Exploring La Paz and Todos Santos

Spend your last morning in La Paz exploring the city. Some of the best things to do in La Paz Centro include:

  • Learn about the indigenous tribes of Baja California at the Museum of Anthropology and History
  • Visit the Whale Museum
  • Check out Mexican folk art in the Museum of Art Baja California Sur (free)
  • Chill on the La Paz Malecon beach
  • Search for the city’s gorgeous murals and street art
  • Wander through the Velasco Garden and the main square of La Paz

A beach near the Malecon in La Paz

Whenever you’re ready, jump in the car and drive just over one hour to the Pacific surf town of Todos Santos . If you’re flying out of Los Cabos International Airport, pack all of your luggage in the car since Todos Santos is on the way back to Cabo. Otherwise, treat it as a day trip.

Grab lunch at Alma y Many’s before exploring the colorful streets of Todos Santos. Be sure to walk a few blocks away to the Hotel California , which may or may not have inspired the famous Eagles song.

Wander through the nearby Cielito Lindo Market , which features local artisans. Stop in local boutiques and surf shops, and get a peek at the gorgeous Iglesia Mision Todos Santos and main square.

Next, head twenty minutes down the road to Cerritos Beach, which is known as one of the best surf spots in Baja . The surf at Cerritos is typically suitable for beginner surfers and surfboards can be rented right on the beach.

a person riding a wave on a surf board in Todos Santos baja Mexico

If you don’t surf, just relax on the beach, grab a drink from the bar stall, and walk along the miles-long sandy shoreline.

On your way back to Todos Santos, be sure to stop at 5 Tacos and a Beer for tacos… and beer! From there, you can head back to either La Paz or Cabo.

Best La Paz, Mexico Hotels

Since each day on this La Paz itinerary is packed full of activities, you won’t spend too much time at your hotel. But if you’re trying to figure out where to stay in La Paz, here are my recommendations:

  • Hotel Posada Luna Sol : This budget-friendly hotel is located just steps from the beach in La Paz’s commercial zone.
  • Hotel & Suites El Moro : One of the highest-rated hotels in La Paz, Hotel & Suites El Moro features a water view, a gorgeous pool, and decent prices.
  • Orchid House Baja : In the chance you’re looking for a little luxury, don’t miss Orchid House, a gorgeous beachfront boutique hotel in La Paz.

Additional Things to Do in La Paz, Mexico

If you have extra time or want to swap out certain activities, there are plenty of other things to do in and around La Paz. Here are some other recommendations:

  • Go sandboarding at the Mogote Sand Dunes
  • Take a day trip to La Ventana , a rustic beach town famous for windsurfing and its hot springs beach. Their Thursday Farmer’s Market is amazing!

  • Take a day trip to Cabo Pulmo , one of the best scuba diving and snorkeling destinations in Baja

Last year the season ended in February because the water got so cold. Guide David and Captain P were awesome. Learned a ton about these animals. They were very supportive of our three young kids getting in and swimming. It was wild to be that close to something so large. This is a "must do". The water was cool but not cold. Even so, bring some warm layers for the boat ride back. Heads up: When we arrived at the dock, they had wetsuits available to rent. We could not do this ahead of time. But they only accepted cash. We had not anticipated this and ended up getting wet suits for the kids with the cash we had brought to tip our guides. I hope in the future Alonso tours either allows rentals in advance or lets clients know that they will need cash to rent on the dock. That was the only frustration of the day. Alonso staff was very communicative in advance and day of the process was seamless for our family with 3 kids under 10 to get wetsuits and get into boat. The boat voyage was easy and took us about 20 min to find a whaleshark and we got to swim alongside it 3 times. Alonso staff very knowledgeable and great in the water with our kids. Even our 6 year old went in and saw the whaleshark. Would highly recommend them for families. Read more Written April 5, 2024

  • P7424FCelisaf 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Dante, Gustavo and Angel kings of whale shark swimming!!!! The trip was really awsome. They were ready and prepared on time. We rented wet suits that were totally NEW. The motor boat was very comfortable and big. They are really experienced. We spoted several whale sharks until they found ine that was swimming really slow wich we can follow and swim with for a long time. I found that they make a great experience for everyone: for kids swimming with them to catch up the group and for the more adventorous letting them swim fast with the shark but always keeping it safe. We were even able to swim with two sharks at the same time!!! Sooo good!! Dante, Gustavo and Angel were the best crew ever!!! Read more Written March 30, 2024

Our guide, David, was exceptional. He was very knowledgeable about the area, the animals, and the conservation efforts of the Mexican government to protect these awesome giants. He explained everything in English and Spanish and was very caring to ensure everyone followed the rules and had a great time. It was a fabulous tour (the captain of the boat was also terrific) and I highly recommend. Read more Written March 13, 2024
  • Tara G 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Choose Alonso! This was an absolutely incredible experience! The crew were super friendly, they educated us about the whale sharks and other marine life in the area and their passion was evident and contagious! David, Bibi and Angel are a total delight and I highly recommend booking a tour with this company! Hopefully you’re lucky enough to get this crew! They took us in teams of 4 to swim with the whale shark after giving us detailed instructions. It was definitely intimidating to jump into the ocean with a beast this size, we lucked in to be able to swim with “valiente” meaning “brave” in Spanish. About a 22 foot whale shark identified by his broken dorsal fin. He’s the largest in the area! My first time I completely freaked out with the sharks head coming towards me, however the second time we jumped in the lead tour guide, David, grabbed my hand and swam with me beside the shark, allowing me to have the most incredible experience seeing it up close and the entire length of the shark! I was in awe! I had a smile on my face a mile wide! Go do this tour! Read more Written February 5, 2024

A wonderful experience anytime but made all the better because our two outstanding tour guides - David and Juan Carlos. David is a marine wildlife guide with a great attitude and because of his background in marine biology made for an informative experience that guaranteed an extensive interaction while insuring the safety of both the tourists and the whale sharks. Juan Carlos was the boat captain who made sure passengers got to the location safely and assisted with getting the snorkelers into and our of the water so that everyone was provided the opportunity to have several interactions with these amazing creatures. Great to see people in the industry who genuinely enjoy both their clientele and their jobs. Read more Written January 24, 2024
  • hollyf702 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Unforgettable Experience Swimming With Whale Sharks! Our family had the most unforgettable experience swimming with the whale sharks! Although the tour was supposed to be only 2-3 hours, we ended up spending 4-5 hours because the whale sharks were much further out due to the wind moving the plankton out towards the sand banks. Everyone in our boat had at least one opportunity to swim with the sharks, and some went multiple times with these gentle creatures. Our guide was really knowledgeable and professional and prepared us well before going into the water. The rest of the crew was really helpful and as we were heading back to shore, we were offered sandwiches, snacks and drinks including water and cold beer. Due to the unforeseen weather and the wind against us, we were slow in getting back to the pier. We were particularly impressed because even though we didn't hire this company through our cruise line, they were very concerned with getting us back in time before our ship's boarding deadline. They went over and above the call of duty by having one of their drivers take us first to make it on time. This was one of the most memorable and enjoyable experiences our entire family has had, and highly recommend it and Alonso Tours. We look forward to doing it again in the future! • Kayak_Joe_Deep_Sea_A 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Snorkeling with Whale Sharks Fun experience snorkeling but at least when we went the visibility was low and you really couldn't get a good view of the sharks until you were right next to them. The crew was A+. Just a heads up that wetsuits are not included, regardless of the tour saying "snorkeling equipment included". They will charge you 250 pesos to rent one which is 100% necessary in the cold water. I recommend they add that wetsuits are not included to the information because I am sure lots of people have wetsuits but just didn't bring them because they thought they were included (like us). The sea lions were active and there was a large variety of colorful fish around their area where we snorkeled - a short 20-minute snorkel. We wore provided wet suits - make sure you remind the point person that they are provided in the offer, as our onsite director offered them at 150 pesos each. We had a nice beach lunch and were told there would be another snorkel stop, but that did not happen - maybe because our boat had engine trouble for about an hour at the start of our trip? One of our guests was an experienced boater and helped get us back moving. The tour company rejected our request for a discount due to the lost time.
