Taste the “Good Stuff” on the Templeton Rye Whiskey Tour

templeton rye tours

The rural town of Templeton, Iowa has long been known for distilling whiskey. In fact, their mascot used to be the “bootleggers”. A few years ago, they moved their multi-million dollar facility back home to Templeton, Iowa. Register ahead of time and you can get a tour of the whiskey-making process and get a sample of the “Good Stuff”. Website for making a reservation: https://templetondistillery.com/visit/

Address: 209 E 3rd St, Templeton, IA 51463 ( Google Map Location )

Here’s the four main sections of the tour:

Step #1) Introductory video in the grain bin. You’ll step into the grain bin located next to the gift shop for a quick intro video to the history of Templeton Rye.

templeton rye tours

Step #2) See how it’s made. During this part of the tour, they will walk you over to the production facility where you climb (or take the elevator) to the 2nd-floor viewing area that overlooks the production area. They will discuss everything from the ingredients to the process for how it is created and distilled.

templeton rye tours

Step #3) Learn about bootlegging and Templeton history Your tour guide will walk you back to the main facility to their history section and guide you through a quick tour of Templeton, prohibition, and bootlegging. The bootlegging stories were my favorite part of this section. For example, how the entire town including the priest, police chief, and telephone operators were in on it. Example of where and how they hide the product from the feds. In fact, my father in law was on the tour with me and he remembers doing work at the Templeton Bank back in the 1970s and they always commented “If you a bottle of the Good Stuff, just leave the money on the driver seat and it will be exchanged for a bottle before you leave.” So years after prohibition was over, the folks in Templeton were still operating quietly to deliver the “Good Stuff”. Our tour guide was also able to offer several bootlegging stories from her own family.

templeton rye tours

Step #4) Taste Testing After the bootlegging stories, they push the panel of the wall and it will open up a path to the secret taste testing area where you’ll be served samples. We were given a 6 yr whiskey and a 10 yr whiskey sample.

Really fun experience if you have the chance to join a tour! Super informative and great facilities. You get to try a bit of whiskey at the end, too. Worth the trip out here!

Family vacation to Iowa to see family (were from Dallas, Texas) thought this would be a cool thing to do with the family. Learned a lot about the history of making whiskey and what they had to do back during the older days. It's also pretty cool to watch them bottling up the whiskey as we were going through the tour.

This review is for a tour on a Thursday at 11:30 while passing through Iowa on a road trip. You make a reservation for a tour at their website: http://www.templetonrye.com/distillery/ The Hospitality Manager, Chase, confirmed our reservation via email within 24 hours. Tours are $10, but we are retired military so the tours are free! Only one other person joined us and Chase took us on the tour. The tour has three parts: museum, distillery and tasting. The museum is both history of Templeton Rye and Templeton, Iowa. They don't skimp on the bootlegging connection. It's a reasonably interesting slice of Prohibition history in the Midwest. Serious tourers may find this portion a wee bit long. You can visit the museum without paying for the tour. The distillery is utterly fascinating. The place was in full swing when we toured. If you understand a bit about distilling, this will be a great experience. If you don't know much about the process, I would imagine it can seem like a whole lot of stainless steel and noise. At the end of the tour, you'll sign a barrel that goes on display. On to tasking. Given Iowa's rather, shall we say, unique liquor laws, you can only taste their special reserve. In other words, you cannot taste the usual 4- or 6-year Templeton Rye you buy in stores. That said, the special reserve is great. Plus, the tasting room has Templeton Iowa's first fire truck? And, wouldn't you know it, as soon as you're done tasting the special reserve, you exit through the gift shop where it's available with a discount from your tour!

Templeton Rye Whiskey's booth at last Summer's Iowa State Fair featured little cards explaining why none of their product was to be found anywhere within the Hawkeye State. The new batch was coming out in November and the previous run had pretty much been sold out. I confirmed that, as store after store shelf was empty and all I could do is put my name on a waiting list or 2. The new batch came out late last year, and my parents sent me news articles about the buyers rush, including marked up resales on ebay. Not since my college days when I drove to Kansas City (KS) for Coors Beer have I participated in similar cult buying behaviour. And who knows, maybe my bottle of Templeton Rye has been available the whole time online at Binny's Beverage Depot out of Chicago. It's also probable that there's better rye whiskey right now on the shelf at my local liquor store. On Friday January 14th at 9 AM, the call finally came. One of the Ames Hy-Vee stores had my single bottle allotment ready. And within the hour, my 80 something parents picked it up, but only after being happily "carded"! I'll be back in Iowa this summer to visit the folks, stay at the Lake, visit friends and family in the Twin Cities, and retrieve my bottle of Templeton Rye Whiskey (provided that Dad hasn't opened it up). Unfortunately, that bottle is spoken for as a favour to a good friend of my Boss. So maybe you'll see me wandering around the State looking for my own stash on some obscure shelf. Or you might see me on some small town street corner flashing a "Will Work for Templeton Rye Whiskey" sign.

REVIEW #1500! Templeton Rye is a small batch whiskey from Iowa, was first introduced in the 1920s, and was made illegally throughout the Prohibition Era. During that time Templeton was at the center of Al Capone's bootlegging empire, and was even shipped to him during his imprisonment at Alcatraz. Templeton Rye (The Next Generation) launched its first legal product in 2006, and is currently only available in Illinois and Iowa. I first became aware of it last year when my boss was helping an old friend move and asked me to pick up a bottle for her when I was back visiting my parents. Mom and Dad scoured Ames and found that bottles were available, but were often rationed or hidden behind the counter. Who knew? My boss' friend was very appreciative and an additional bottle stayed in Ames for my return. Last weekend when I was in town, Dad and I poured a few glasses, sat in the family room, and shared a poignant conversation about life's successes, regrets, and what was yet to come. At the end of my too short of a visit, this fine sipping whiskey provided "a smooth finish and a clean getaway". Hopefully, there will be many more opportunities to return and toast my parent's fine aging over an amber glass of spicy, chewy, mellow, and almost bittersweet glass of Templeton Rye Whiskey.

THE GOOD STUFF. Plain and simple. Labor Day weekend we were in Iowa so we drove out of the way to check out the new distillery. Tours are $10, and you get a $5 coupon off of merchandise (there is a minimum spend). The gift shop has a lot of t-shirts, sweatshirts, jackets, hats, glassware and other TR trinkets. The tour started with a short video narrated by co-founder Keith Kerkhoff. The guide gave a brief history of bootlegging and even showed us the original still that TR was made in. On to the pretty new building...This is a very impressive facility. A couple of additional TR staff joined the tour to talk about the equipment and talk about the process. It was cool to see the mash through the glass. The bottling was not operating at the time but we got to see a short video and on the way out we signed a barrel. Back into the visitor center we were led into a room similar to what the barrel warehouse storage would look/smell like and from there onto the bar! We received two shots of TR. Our guide also described how to enjoy it best. You also have an opportunity to purchase the Special Reserve, which we did, of course!

Cool building and a great little stop over. I love Templeton Rye and we finally took the time to stop after the many trips to Carroll to see family. The museum they have setup is very interesting. As much as I wanted to the tour, 90 minutes was just a bit much for me... So on to the tasting... what? Only one thing to taste? Hmmm ok yes is delicious but when I visit a distillery, I expect more than just one. However, I will continue to purchase Templeton Rye because it's just good. They did have a great gift shop and found some unique items to purchase some of the kids.

I've purchased a bottle or two of Templeton Rye over the last couple years and was impressed with it. Tasty stuff. The label and description and website all give the consumer the impression that it is distilled in Templeton, Iowa....heck, they even call it their 'distillery' on the webpage and voice mail (I called to ask before Googling more). Turns out Templeton is simply a *brand* not a distillery. I was disappointed to read the recent spate of articles (on the Daily Beast and others) pointing out that Templeton Rye is actually made in Indiana at a large former Seagram's distillery that makes a ton of other whiskey products for other brands. I don't have a problem with people sourcing their juice elsewhere, and Templeton does apparently age (a bit?) and then bottle their rye in Iowa, but I feel like the victim of a marketing ploy. Not cool, and I don't plan on ever buying another bottle of Templeton. Next time, other bottle of Angel's Envy. Also super tasty, also made at the same giant distillery.....but at least they don't offer up a fake 'local' backstory.

Yesterday, June 14, 2014 we toured the Templeton Rye Whiskey location in Templeton Iowa. First and foremost if you find yourself here it was simply and specifically only to do tour. There is literally nothing but hundreds of thousands of farm acres around. Templeton only has a population of about 300 and it's 30 miles north of I-80 in the middle of Iowa. Now, on to the Tour review. It's hard to believe that this business is a multi million dollar business. The owner, the grandson of the original prohibition era distillery actually gives the tour and is in every definition just a simple good ol boy country farmer. He tells story after story like he was sitting on a front porch swing. Very, very interesting stories. The place is tiny but in my opinion every bit worth the five dollar charge. Plus they are very liberal with allowing tastings! A fun and good time for all adults.

In templeton, iowa, tasting the historic whiskey known as 'the good stuff'.

The whiskey distillery is hard to miss as you drive into the tiny western Iowa farm town of Templeton. A sky-high stack of whiskey barrels topped with American and Iowan flags — aka the "Templeton Rye Barrel Tree" — towers above a sprawling 20-acre production facility that welcomes visitors with a small history museum and guided tours.

Above ground and aboveboard, today's Templeton Rye, introduced in 2006, is a reboot of the underground (and illegal) Prohibition-era hooch made by Templeton townspeople. Templeton Rye's first heyday was from 1920 to the 1930s, when it was dubbed "The Good Stuff" and was reputedly the favorite of Chicago mobster Al Capone.

Opened in 2018, the $35 million Templeton Rye Distillery and Visitor Center presumably quiets any complaints that the 21st-century product was, at first, deceptively marketed as Iowa-made craft whiskey, when it was actually distilled in Indiana and bottled in Templeton. Related lawsuits were settled in 2015. The first all-Iowan good stuff, aged for four years, will be sold in 2022.

I'm not a whiskey drinker, but I am a sucker for a maker's tour. And I'm a history buff who loves a good story. I got this and more (yes, there's a tasting) during a 90-minute tour in two buildings, each with modern and rustic touches. The low-slung, western-looking visitor center is clad in brown metal siding with wood posts, a slanted copper-colored metal roof and dormer windows. The distillery, also a long, brown metal building, has a flat-faced tower resembling an old-fashioned grain elevator.

Prohibition lore

On a Friday in August, I joined 13 other visitors from as far away as North Carolina on a tour led by a resident of Templeton (pop. 338). It began in the visitor center museum, which documents Templeton's colorful bootleg history via re-created old-timey scenes, signs with folksy narrative, historic photos and memorabilia.

We learned that the bootleggers included a former mayor and a justice of the peace. A 10-year-old boy's chores included hiding whiskey in his dad's truck. Deliveries were made weekly to the Iowa Statehouse in Des Moines, where a local tavern also reportedly sold the good stuff to a young Ronald Reagan, then a radio broadcaster.

Even the local priest and sheriff kept the town's secret. Word has it the sheriff wore a white hat to alert whiskey cookers of a raid. Hogs did their part by creating a stench that masked the smell of cooking booze.

Walking past an old rocking chair, we learned how "grandma" used to "rock the rye," with a 10-gallon barrel attached to the back of the rocker. This was believed (incorrectly) to be an aging method. We saw replicas of the many clever hiding places for whiskey jugs and bottles — inside a corn crib, under a livestock barn, and my personal favorite, a hollowed-out gravestone. An elevated fence post was a signal of whiskey hidden within.

Modern process

From the museum, with its old-fashioned copper still (donated by a bootlegger's granddaughter), we moved abruptly into the 21st century, entering the distillery that includes a very different modern-day, 36-foot-high copper column still, imported from Scotland.

The still's windows offered views of yellow mash sloshing around as it is heated with steam and cooked, pulling the alcohol from the grain. The grain falls to the bottom. The alcohol rises to the top and condenses into a liquid.

A production operator guided us along a second-floor catwalk, past large gleaming machinery, including 14 metal fermentation tanks, each 25 feet high and 10 feet wide, holding 10,000 gallons and named after a former Templeton resident.

En route, the guide explained in detail the process of converting rye (and some malt barley and yeast) into whiskey: grinding the grain; cooking, fermenting and distilling; aging in barrels; cutting to the desired proof and bottling. The guide mentioned that his job includes whiskey-tasting. "Do you need help?" a male tour-goer asked.

We also watched a video showing how workers use blowtorches to flame-char the insides of the 10-gallon American white oak barrels. The char helps provide the whiskey's smoky flavor and caramel color. Sadly, the automated bottling line was not in action, but a video showed how it operates.

The strong stuff

After signing a whiskey barrel, we were ushered into a small, dark aging room with barrels stacked on their sides and signed by earlier visitors — about 7,000 to date. Then we walked through a hidden sliding door into a brick-walled room — aka "The Speakeasy" — where we bellied up to the bar for a free shot glass of Templeton Rye Special Reserve. It's barrel-aged for six years instead of the usual four, and only available for purchase in the visitor center gift shop for about $55. (Tour-goers receive a $5 coupon.)

Marketed for its aroma ("dry, grassy and natural spice"), taste ("caramel, butterscotch, toffee and allspice" hints), body ("deep amber color, lingering and slightly chewy") and finish ("wonderful balance, clean and silky smooth"), Templeton Rye won two gold medals at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition in April.

The good stuff was strong stuff for me. I took a few sips, which stung my lips and throat. But I left with a newfound appreciation for what it takes to make Templeton Rye today — and what it took back in the day.

More information

About 4½ hours southwest of the Twin Cities, Templeton Rye is open for four tours daily from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. There is no production on Saturday, so the still is not running and the bottling line may be down.

The tour costs $10 for visitors ages 21 and older, free for those younger. The museum and tasting (21 and older; bring ID) are free from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday (1-712-669-8793; templetonrye.com).

Very Interesting Tour

My wife and I were very fortunate to have been able to take the tour of this distillery. It's very informative and interesting. The tour guide was excellent and made our visit very special. The production employees are also friendly. The best is you can sample the 4- and 6-year batches, which tasted great. The visitor center also has a wide array of merchandise available to purchase. This is definitely worth going a bit out of your way to visit.

I was one of the first employees of TR. This is a trip worth coming to see. A great company and a fun place to work. My job most of the time was writing out labels. They no longer do this and I think this was a big mistake. I no longer work there but I do live here and just driving around our small clean town is worth your time. Hope to meet you all sometime. Please put our town on your list of sights to see.

This tour is a must if you are in the area!! The tour is very informative and personal. The persons giving the tour and a taste of Templeton Rye after the tour are great people. After the tour just sitting around connecting with the staff is lots of fun!!

Another couple joined us on a drive cruise to Templeton to check out Al Capone's favorite prohibition rye whisky. Templeton, IA is quite small, and it's hard to miss the barrel tree in the front! Cheryl Kerkhoff greeted us when we entered the door...beautiful room with lots of wood and very welcoming, like going into someone's home. The bar, especially the back bar, is gorgeous. Our tour began with Cheryl explaining about the prohibition recipe that was Capone's favorite for his rye whiskey. Even his great-niece Deirdre Marie Capone endorses Templeton! Most interesting! As we proceeded with the tour we learned how the whiskey came back into being: the recipe, how the distillers fooled the "revenooers" (the story about the white horse is a hoot!) and the myriad government regulations for duplicating the liquor. The bottling process is done by hand by workers originally recruited via the church bulletins(no town newspaper), some of whom are still at work! The plastic around the cap/cork is still shrink-wrapped by hand and the seal band is then applied! The tour ended with a sampling of the whiskey at the beautiful bar. Templeton Rye is a must-see/do.

We stopped there on a trip on the Lincoln Highway. I rode past their facility many years ago while riding my bike on Ragbrai and regret not going inside. Luckily I was able to email Cheryl K. who oversees the visitor center. If you are within an hour or two of this site, please stop, they have a very unique story which is well worth exploring. While we were there folks from TX and FL were there, so I am suprised that I am the first to review.

Templeton Distillery originated in Templeton, Iowa, during Prohibition by bootleggers Frank Schroeder and Alphonse Kerkhoff. As the story goes, Templeton Rye was a personal favorite of Al Capone, who referred to the whiskey as “the good stuff.” The brand fell to the wayside in the years after Prohibition and was resurrected in 2006 by Keith Kerkhoff, grandson of Alphonse. The brand once featured “Prohibition Era Recipe” on its label but was forced to remove the language in 2014 as the company sources its rye from MGP of Indiana, though it does use Iowa water to proof the whiskey down. The company built a $35 million distillery in 2018 and now produces rye in-house, but their distillate still hasn’t made it into their current products. The company underwent a rebrand in 2021, which coincided with the launch of Templeton 10 Year Reserve Rye. Templeton is unique as their product line only includes rye whiskey, a rarity in today’s marketplace. ‍ ‍ The bourbon in review comes from barrel number 3730.

A potent burst of red fruits and apricot combined with rye spice and cinnamon, is pleasant and lively. The aroma is surprisingly effective thanks to the interaction between its scents. With additional minor grassy, mint, and baking spice-related scents, it's strawberry and red raspberry that stand out the most. Though it stays close to a traditional flavor profile for a rye, where it deviates by pushing its red fruits to the forefront greatly benefits the aroma. With a touch of pear and caramel apple in tow, this rye’s aroma is well-rounded, yet potent when it needs to be, resulting in a delicious-smelling nose.

A straightforward approach of seasoned oak, honey, and rye spice creates a sturdy foundation to the whiskey’s palate. Working off of this are more accented floral, green apple, and caramel notes that help add some layers of distinction to the sip. Far from flashy but never boring, the palate does a great job highlighting the strengths of its high age through a very grounded yet potent array of flavors.

The whiskey’s grounded undertone continues into the finish with the introduction of a dry oak note. Sweeter flavors of honey and melted butterscotch are present, creating a welcome contrast to the dry oak. The rye’s proof is most evident in the finish, as it walks the fine line between being light and manageable, but allowing its rye spice notes to nicely crescendo with a good deal of warmth and a lingering fruity aftertaste. It’s an ending that works really well and is a cohesive part of the overall sip.

A double-digit age statement is always noteworthy when it comes to bourbon, but it's arguably even more so with rye. With the widely held belief that rye is better at a younger age than bourbon and rye’s relative weakness in the marketplace compared to bourbon, most producers just don’t age rye as long as bourbon. Even among producers who source their rye from MGP - which is one of the largest distillers of rye in the U.S. - you rarely see double-digit age-stated ryes from them. Although Templeton has built a distillery of their own, all of their current products are still sourced from MGP for the time being. That’s why it is so surprising to see a small company like Templeton release a 10 year old rye and an even bigger surprise that it hasn’t received the attention it deserves. While double-digit aged ryes are more common for ryes produced in Canada, this is not the case for those produced in the United States. Besides the one-off limited releases by Basil Hayden 10 Year Rye in 2020, Parker’s Heritage Cask Strength 10 Year Rye , and the slightly more available Old Overholt Extra Aged 10 Year Rye in 2023, not to mention a few non-distiller producers over the years, such as New England Barrel Co. and Nashville Barrel Co., double-digit age stated ryes are still an anomaly. Years ago, High West and Smooth Ambler made a name for themselves selling such products, but now, even with rye’s supposed resurgence, there are few on offer. In a general sense, a lot of the 4-6-year-old ryes from MGP on the market taste relatively similar. They’re fruit-forward, with a decent amount of vanilla, oak, rye spice, and a touch of dill. They lean classic, putting forth uniformity, and play it safe. Templeton 10 Year Reserve Rye doesn’t fall too far outside that flavor profile either, but the extra age and availability are what set it apart and help elevate it across the board. As a result of its extra time in the barrel, Templeton’s 10 Year Reserve Rye’s flavors have an extra heft to them, shedding their brightness for a more robust and grounded flavor profile. Though the classic MGP fruity profile remains, it's less sweet and much more grounded. It manages to be familiar yet offer a mature rye flavor profile that you just don’t get very often with rye. It’s not transformative, but easily something rye lovers will find very compelling.

Besides a potential lack of supply, another theory as the reason you don’t see a lot of high-aged ryes, especially MGP ryes on the market is because of their cost to non-distiller producers. Templeton throws that idea out of the window as their 10 Year Reserve Rye is priced at a very reasonable $85. Though not inexpensive, the scarcity of double-digit ryes on the market, combined with it also being a single barrel, results in a whiskey of great potential value. Perhaps producers aren't seeing a big demand for high-priced ryes, and that is the real reason for the lack of high aged MGP ryes on the market. Nevertheless, having a 10 year age statement is a big deal when it comes to ryes, and I’d argue it oftentimes makes a bigger impact on rye than it does so for bourbon at this age range. The deciding factor is taste, so add in the enjoyable flavor profile, and $85 is a no-brainer for rye lovers.

Age is the name of the game with this release, and Templeton Rye 10 Year Reserve Rye benefits greatly because of it.

Age statements don’t matter except when they do, and this is a case where it most certainly does. With so few double-digit age-stated ryes on the market, featuring one is immediately impressive, but thankfully the whiskey’s flavor profile backs up the expectations that come with it. MGP ryes aren’t always whiskeys to get overly excited about, as this is usually due to their overall flavor consistency and availability in the marketplace. But this is a case where your preconceived notions should be kept in check because the whiskey in the bottle more than stacks up. Templeton isn’t a brand that has an overly strong presence in the marketplace. Maybe that has to do with their sole focus on rye, their value-based portfolio, and their rye being sourced from MGP, but don’t let that get in the way of this bottle. Being a single barrel, variations will occur, but with so few 10 year old ryes available, combined with its wide availability and great price point, it’s definitely worth your time to take a look.

Review: Templeton Rye 4, 6, and 10 Years Old (2022)

templeton rye tours

Templeton Rye has been with us since the dawn of the “non-distillery producer” — and the backlash that came along with them. (We first reviewed Templeton way back in 2009 , none the wiser and well before people were talking about NDPs in earnest.)

Templeton had a lot of street cred when it first launched and it quickly became both the whipping boy and public face for NDPs — paying $2.5 million in settlements after a class action lawsuit. But despite the industry outcries against unclear labeling and made-up backstories, Templeton has been and remains a survivor in the business — and it’s paved the way for literally hundreds of producers to follow in its footsteps, the vast majority of which source their whiskeys from MGP in Indiana, just as Templeton still does today. (For what it’s worth, it still bottles its whiskey in Iowa.)

Templeton says it’s still distilling its own stuff, but it has yet to hit the market. To make its releases its own, it’s been said that it adds a small amount of flavoring to its 4 and 6 year old bottlings — which are marketed as just rye, not straight rye — although you’ll notice the 10 year old single barrel release is indeed a straight rye, so not adulterated. Templeton has been fairly quiet on this issue for well over a decade — it explained itself, sort of, in a now-deleted web page in the mid-2010s — and you won’t find any new info about their secret sauce here.

Over the years, Templeton has launched special editions and line extensions — and recently it finally undertook a full redesign of its core lineup, with new bottles and labels for all three of its primary offerings. All three remain MGP rye — 95% rye, 5% corn — and each variously carries a 4, 6, or 10 year old age statement. How are they faring as of 2022? Let’s dive in to fresh bottles of each.

Templeton Rye 4 Years Old – Last review 2009 . There’s definitely a curious character here with a nose that evokes dried apples, cinnamon, and chocolate, plus some brown sugar-laden sweetness. Very soft and sweet on the palate, the whiskey evokes notes of Apple Jacks cereal, butterscotch, and toffee, all doused in sugar syrup. Silky and seductive, it’s decidedly easy to drink, though the juicy, over-sweetened experience feels increasingly “doctored” the more you sip on it. Looking back at my tasting notes from 13 years ago, it feels like moderate alterations may have been made in the intervening years, but probably not many. (I’d chalk many of those comments up to general immaturity now.) I agree with my earlier assessment of how drinkable this is — but its complexity is virtually nonexistent, making it fairly useless in the broader rye category. 80 proof.  B / $35 [ BUY IT NOW FROM CASKERS ] [ BUY IT NOW FROM THE WHISKY EXCHANGE ]

Templeton Rye 6 Years Old – Last review 2016 . At a significantly higher proof — and two more years of age — you would think Templeton would cut a much different experience. The nose says otherwise, again showcasing a highly sweetened character dominated by apple cinnamon and milk chocolate, with a stronger vanilla component — if only slightly. The palate has the added warmth of the extra 5%-and-change abv, but it makes less of an impact than you’d think, adding some texture and lightly dulling the sweetness, but otherwise remaining on message: apples (and lots of them), cinnamon, chocolate, vanilla. In that order. Brown sugar on top of everything. I get absolutely none of the bitter, rubbery notes I encountered back in 2016, but that hasn’t really changed my overall impression of the spirit. Aside from the change in heat, this is only the barest departure from the 4 year old. 91.5 proof.  B / $45 [ BUY IT NOW FROM CASKERS ] [ BUY IT NOW FROM THE WHISKY EXCHANGE ]

Templeton Straight Rye Single Barrel 10 Years Old – Last review 2017 . Barrel number is provided on the neck of each bottle. This is clearly a different animal, namely in that it smells a lot more like rye: woody, savory, and punchy with notes of ground pepper and a heavier clove character. The palate offers a similar character, though there’s a gentle sweetness amidst its brisk complement of toasted grains, showing notes of butterscotch and toffee. The higher proof gives the whiskey some gravitas and a little peppery heat, allowing the finish to perk up and show some much-needed baking spice notes. A bit dusty as it fades away, the experience returns to a more savory, woodshop-driven character with a pepper note that’s more black than red. Either way, it’s a far different whiskey than its younger siblings, almost certainly due to the lack of flavoring agents in the mix. 104 proof. Reviewed: Barrel #2763. Templeton 10-Year Reserve Single Barrel Rye

OVERALL RATING

Whiskey Review: Templeton 10-Year Reserve Single Barrel Rye

  • by Scott Bernard Nelson
  • November 5, 2021

Tasting Notes:

Editor’s Note: This whiskey was provided to us as a review sample by Templeton Distillery. This in no way, per our editorial policies , influenced the final outcome of this review. It should also be noted that by clicking the buy link towards the bottom of this review our site receives a small referral payment which helps to support, but not influence, our editorial and other costs.

MGP Ingredients , as you’ve read on this site many times, is the biggest private-label producer in the whiskey business. A lot of brands fill their bottles with MGP whiskies – just look for “distilled in Indiana” on the labels.

It’s no surprise, then, that MGP makes a variety of whiskeys. But for my money, rye has long been its best. So a 10-year-old MGP straight rye sounds like a promising place to start for a new release .

Templeton 10 joins the well-established 4-year rye and 6-year rye from the Iowa-based Templeton Distillery. (I reviewed both of the younger Templeton ryes earlier this year.) But the 4-year and 6-year whiskies can’t be labeled as “straight rye,” while this 10-year version obviously can. That suggests it carries none of the artificial flavorings Templeton Distillery puts into its younger whiskies. For purists, that’s definitely a good thing.

What you have, in short, is a 10-year-old single barrel MGP straight rye, poured into bottles at 104 proof. Yea, sign me up to try that.

Templeton has been barreling its own whiskies in Iowa for a few years, and should start releasing them to the world in 2022 or 2023. It’ll be interesting to see how the MGP Templetons will change when they become the Iowa-distilled Templetons.

Whatever that shift ends up looking (and tasting) like, here’s to hoping the distillery keeps the 10-year straight rye as a permanent addition to its lineup.

Appearance: This is dark whiskey, befitting something that spent 10 years in new oak. Deep amber. Solid legs on the side of a glass.

Nose: Even after half an hour, this is boozy in my Glencairn. But there’s a sweetness and a gentle spiciness underneath the ethanol. I smell cinnamon, chocolate orange jelly sticks and a whiff of raspberry habanero sauce. What I don’t smell is traditional rye grass. Seems like a decade in the barrel has been a stronger influence than the rye, in this case.

Palate: The first wave of flavor is dark chocolate and caramelized figs. The barrel comes through strongly again here, as it did on the nose. The rye is present too, but it’s not overwhelming and it’s not particularly reminiscent of the herbal or grassy flavors I often associate with ryes. In the mid-palate, I found a surprising spoonful of chocolate chip mint ice cream followed by a long, warm, charred-oak finish. A splash of water really helped open up this rye, mellowing it and rounding it out nicely.

Back in late 2016/early 2017, Templeton Rye released a special 10 year old rye whiskey to commemorate their 10 year anniversary as a company. It came in an ornate box and contained 10 year old MGP rye whiskey that was bottled at 101 proof.  The price was a wallet-shattering $150 .

This release was a success and proved that enthusiasts seemed to be moving on from Templeton’s previous missteps where they lied about the origins of their rye whiskey. The courts ruled that Templeton had to pay back a certain amount of money to customers that proved they had purchased their products in the prior years when the label stated that it was made in Iowa (even though it was being sourced from MGP) .  .

Fast forward 4 years and Templeton decided to release another 10 year old rye whiskey. This time it is being sold in single barrels  (mine is barrel 2766 for reference)  and is bottled at 104 proof.

10 Year Old Rye Whiskey

The price is also way better than their last edition with retail being around $80 to $85. The bottle also gets a heavy redesign along with their standard 4 and 6 year old releases.

This is a welcome change because their previous bottles looked terrible. No doubt those leftovers will continue to collect dust on shelves everywhere for many more years while the new ones will probably sell very well.

10 Year Old MGP rye whiskey is somewhat exclusive to Templeton in the year 2021 while a few NDPs are just now getting their hands on 9 year old barrels. The reason is because Templeton has had such a long history of sourcing from the Lawrenceburg Indiana Distillery that they have an open pipeline from barrels that they had contracted from years ago.

If you’re looking for comparable rye whiskies that are also sourced from MGP and have similar ages I would suggest you try to find Redemption 10 Year Rye Whiskey Batch 002  (which is from 2017 but can still be found on shelves)  and Bone Snapper Single Barrels  (which have a handful of 9 year old single barrels available as store picks) .

So how is Templeton’s newest single barrel release? Let’s try it out. I sampled this neat in a glencairn .

Tasting Notes

Templeton 10 Year Reserve Rye Whiskey brass plate

Nose : Scents of Nilla Wafers combine with gingerbread, mint and lemon curd. There’s also the classic pine needles and baking spices that are so pleasant to find with every nosing. Clove, allspice and cinnamon interact with the rest of the scents in perfect harmony.

Palate: Brown sugar sweetness greets your tongue while notes of peppermint and red pepper flakes give some enjoyable heat to each sip. Baking spices like clove and nutmeg mix with herbal notes like dill and marjoram.

There’s even some notes of citrus rind (tangerine and lemon) to really let you know that you’re drinking a rye whiskey. Astringency is non existent and the mouthfeel is fairly oily which checks just about every box you’d want in a dram like this.

Finish: Lingering notes of citrus rind, cinnamon and peppermint candies keep this old rye whiskey kind of on the brighter side while notes of sticky cinnamon candies give almost a sticky quality to the liquid. Some dry leather and a touch of oak spice show off the age of the distillate very well.

Score: 8.1/10

Templeton 10 Year Reserve Rye Whiskey vertical

For all the more that the Templeton name is scorned in the world of whiskey, I must give credit where credit is due. This 10 year old single barrel is a really well done rye whiskey that balances the sweetness and spice that MGP rye is known for.

The decision to proof it down just a little bit really helps with the balance.  This pains me to say because I normally prefer my ryes to be at barrel proof but it’s true here. It also doesn’t hurt that this new packaging looks like something you’d want to actually show off on a shelf instead of hide behind other bottles .

Templeton did their homework on this one and I do genuinely hope it pays off for them. I think everything is right about this bottle from the look to the price to the liquid that’s inside of it. If you’re on the fence about this one, let me ease your worries: It’s worth it.
