Transport to Get Around Lombok

1. damri buses.

If you want to go to Mataram and Senggigi from Lombok International Airport, the most convenient option is DAMRI buses. Operating from 4 AM to 10 PM, these buses cater to both early morning departures and late evening arrivals at the airport.

The primary means of public transportation for commuting within towns and villages in Lombok is the converted mini-van, commonly known as bemo.

In urban areas, larger bright yellow bemos operate along the popular Cakra-Mataram-Ampenan east-west route. The smaller ones, featuring an open back and side seats, are utilized in villages.

Hailing a passing bemo along the roadside, hopping into the back, and signaling the driver when you want to disembark is a straightforward process.

Bemos are a cost-effective option for short to medium distances. They are also available for day trips, with the necessity of negotiating the price in advance.

However, beyond the city or north of Senggigi, regular bemo services become scarce, requiring the chartering of a vehicle, especially for nighttime travel.

Taxis are easily accessible in various parts of Lombok, providing an affordable and convenient mode of transportation.

Hailing a taxi off the street is a simple process, especially within the urban Mataram area and Senggigi. You can simply flag one down from the roadside.

However, in less developed areas, especially during the evening, it’s best to plan ahead and pre-book a taxi by phone. You can ask your hotel receptionist to book one.

Taxis can take you to any destination in Lombok, and you can even charter a taxi for an entire day. Taxi drivers are willing to wait while you shop, and the waiting time charges are reasonably priced.

Let us tell you how to get around Lombok in a hassle-free way: hiring a car and driver. There are many English-speaking drivers available in the city and around Senggigi, and most hotels can recommend reliable and affordable ones.

The cost of hiring a driver depends on how far you need to go and how long you need the car. It might be a bit more expensive than other options, but hiring a driver means you can plan your own itinerary and explore off-the-beaten-path destinations.

If you’re wondering how to get around Lombok and experience the local culture, the answer is the traditional cidomo, a horse-drawn cart that has been used as public transportation for generations.

Not only is it a unique way to experience local culture, but it is also a practical way to navigate through villages and reach the market.

And when it comes to the Gili Islands, cidomos and bicycles are the only forms of transportation allowed. Fares are legally fixed and displayed, so you don’t have to worry about negotiating prices.

Although they may be slightly higher than on mainland Lombok, cidomo fares are still affordable, making them the perfect choice for those looking for a memorable and budget-friendly experience.

How to get around Lombok in a cost-effective way when you’re traveling solo? Of course by taking an ojek , or a motorbike taxi service! Ojek stations can be found at busy intersections where mini-buses are not as accessible. 

When using ojek services, you can usually negotiate the fare with the driver based on the distance and duration of the ride. The drivers are usually accommodating and may even wait while you shop, or offer a daily rate.

Also, make sure to ask the driver for a spare helmet to avoid getting fined by traffic police.

Public transportation is generally not as easy in Lombok as it is in Bali. But there is less traffic!

Public Transport in Lombok

Damri and Bemos are Lombok’s local public transport options, mainly serving shorter routes within towns and rural areas.

Damri Bus – From the Airport and between bigger cities there are often DAMRI buses. They are affordable and the minivans are usually very good and have AC. They run frequently but finding the routes is unfortunately not always so easy.

Bemos – There is just one advantage to Bemos, they are cheap! Make sure you have your maps on your phone up, communication is not always so easy. By checking the map you at least know if you’re going in the right direction.

From Mataram Bus Station there are busses to other cities outside of Lombok.

Using Grab and Gojek in Lombok

Grab and Gojek apps have revolutionized transport in Indonesia, but not in Lombok! You will find it working in very few places, only when it’s very central. Many hotels and hostels have posters saying that this is a place you cant order a Grab or Gojek to. The reason is good, but for you as a traveler it can be inconvenient. By not using a app the driver receives more money.

Hailing a Taxi in Lombok

Taxis are readily available, especially in tourist-heavy areas like Senggigi and around the airport. Opt for metered taxis to avoid overcharging and ensure you’re getting a licensed vehicle. Blue Bird Taxi, a reputable company, is often recommended for its reliability. They also have a good app you should download.

All official taxis in Lomobok use meters. Its almost always cheaper than what you will be able to negotiate with other drivers, so just meter taxis!

Renting a Car or Scooter

The most convenient is to rent your car or scooter in advance so its ready at the airport, depending on how much luggage you have. The downside to renting in advance is if you get delayed, its also usually more expensive.

Car Rentals for Comfortable Exploration

Renting a car offers the most comfort and flexibility, ideal for families or groups. Several rental agencies are available, with the option to rent with or without a driver. Ensure you have a valid international driving permit if you plan to drive.

Scooter Rentals for the Adventurous

For solo travelers or couples, scooters are a popular way to explore Lombok. They are economical and allow you to navigate through traffic easily. Always wear a helmet, carry your license, and be cautious of local driving conditions.

Exploring Lombok by Bicycle

Cycling is a great way to explore Lombok’s scenic countryside, particularly in areas like Kuta where the terrain is more forgiving. Many guesthouses and rental shops offer bicycles, allowing you to enjoy a leisurely ride through the island’s picturesque landscapes.

Be careful about where you choose to bicycle, the traffic can be very dangerous! You can also find organized bike tours. That’s a great way to explore and exercise at the same time.

Walking Around Lombok

Walking is a pleasant way to explore the towns and villages of Lombok. Places like the Gili Islands are pedestrian-friendly and offer a tranquil experience away from motorized vehicles. Always stay hydrated and protected from the sun.

If you want to explore Lombok the best way possible, then my advice is by scooter and walking. The scooter gets you everywhere, and then explore by walking around.

Practical Tips for Navigating Lombok

Familiarize yourself with local traffic rules and customs.

Be aware of your surroundings, especially when using scooters or bicycles.

Consider the time of day and traffic conditions when planning your travel. Be careful driving around after dark.

MAPS.ME, Google Maps, and having mobile data on your phone. Things happen and your transportation can break down.

Navigating around Lombok is part of the adventure, with each mode of transport offering a different perspective of the island. Whether you choose public transport, a rental, or simply to walk, each option provides a unique way to connect with the island’s beauty and culture.

Day 3 - Tour to Kremlin

Waking up today morning, visit The Armoury, which is a treasury museum. Some parts of this museum houses artefacts and other historical pieces of interest like gowns and thrones, gold and silver items created by Russian and European jewellers as well as the armour worn by knights.

Day 5 - Another Day of Moscow Tour

Today will be the last day of the great Moscow tour. On this day, you will be visiting the New Maiden Nunnery, a convent known for housing sacred relics while also serving as a safe house for exiled girls who come from noble households if they get pregnant out of wed lock. Also visit New Maiden Cemetery, the burial ground for a number of powerful Russian and Soviet politicians, World War II heroes, musicians, authors and actors. Spend the rest of the day indulging in some personal sightseeing.
