Makalidurga – Perfect for a day out

June 13, 2012 by Raggi Mudde

Tired of the work and the constant deadlines? If you are, and you are living in Bangalore, you are in for a lucky break. There are places just hours away from the city of Bangalore which are ideal for day outings. In terms of experiences, you could use from the adventurous, the thrilling and the tranquil. And if you are looking for a nice blend of tranquility and adventure, Makalidurga is the place to be.

It is not so much a holiday resort than a barren land with greenery here and there, and granite rocks to climb. The stillness of the place is what makes Makalidurga exciting in the first place.

Reaching Makalidurga

Makalidurga Trek

Makalidurga is located about 60 km from Bangalore, and takes just short of two hours to reach the place. The best way to reach Makalidurga from Bangalore is to take the train from Yesvantpur Junction, which leaves at 08:15 hours. Makalidurga has a very small station and the train passing through the hills is an enchanting sight indeed.

However, if you are not too comfortable taking the short train journey, you could always take a bus or drive to the destination yourself. You have to reach Doddaballapur from Bangalore, which is about 35 km away, and then ask directions to Makalidurga from the locals out there. Makalidurga is situated at about 15 km from Doddaballapur, and it should take about half an hour to reach the destination.

The adventure that lies ahead of you

As you reach Makalidurga, you are stunned by the stillness of the place. There are hardly any people around, which is a partly eerie and a partly exciting experience. There are hardly any shops or hawkers around either. That’s why, you are best advised to carry loads of food and water while coming for a day outing in Makalidurga.

The highlight of the destination is the Makalidurga fort which lies atop a granite hillock. While the trekking trail here may not be as popular as that of Savandurga, it is nevertheless worth the experience. And the best part is, you won’t find the trek to the top of the hillock too taxing.

Makalidurga Trek

It is a moderately difficult trek, and with some effort, you can easily climb the barren rocks and boulders. There are some directions written too on the boulders itself which you would do well to follow. The top of the hill gets you face to face with the ruins of a fort, which is spread across quite an area.

The view you get here of the lake which is located just a few km away from the destination is fascinating. And while at the top, don’t miss out on catching a sight of the train meandering through the hills at the bottom of the hill. The sight is definitely worthy of being caught in your camera.

Other than the fascinating views and the trek to the top of the hillock, there is little else you can do here, other than a small temple located at the base of the hill.

But for those willing, there is night trekking too

If you are daring enough, night trekking in Makalidurga is an experience not to be missed. While the place is still during the day, it is more so during the night, which is sure to send a chill down your spine. The trek to the top of the hill takes about 2 hours, which means you could easily start at 10 at night, camp for a while at the top of the hill and then make your way down by 5 in the morning.

If you decide to take the night trek in Makalidurga, make sure you have a professional guide with you, a torch, as well as a mosquito repellant. And do carry sufficient food and water with you, as finding a shop here at night is the same as the sun rising from the West.

Best time for trekking here

The cooler months of September to February are the best time to trek in Makalidurga. It can get very hot in summers, and should be avoided. The rainy months make the granite rocks very slippery and dangerous, and you do well to avoid them too.

All set to pack and go but concerned about a perfect itinerary?  Thrillophilia  has the perfect outings designed to suit your style and make trekking around Bangalore an experience of a lifetime.

Makalidurga is a perfect weekend destination from Bangalore as it is only 55 kms on the outskirts of the metropolitan city. It is a picturesque hill surrounded by a scenic lake which appears to be in the shape of South American continent. There lies a fort atop the Makalidurga hill and a railway track follows just at the base of the hill which makes the trek route highly scenic. The ideal way for all trekkers to start the trek is from Makalidurga railway station which adds a vintage style to the trekking activity. The whole trail is covered by dense grassland which grows so tall that at times it hides the trail leading up to the hill. Makalidurga hill is famous for spectacular views of sunrise and sunsets. The area of the Hill top is seen to be divided into three parts - the center where in a Shiva temple is located, Western side from where the beautiful lake can be observed and lastly the eastern side from where one can see the beauty of the unveiled sun. ITINERARY Pick up at 10:15 PM from Bangalore. Coach will take you to Makalidurga railway station. Enroute, you will be briefed about the trek route and what awaits you. Start trekking from railway station through dense grasslands. On reaching the hill top, explore the fort and the Shiva temple. Enjoy the beauty of the South American continent shaped lake as you view the first rays of the sun falling over the topography. Return back to the base followed by a heavy sumptuous breakfast. Return back to Bangalore by 2:00 PM.

Makalidurga Trek Reviews

Shivank pant.

Makalidurga Trek is a beautiful and easy trek located near Bangalore. The trekking trail is well-maintained and offers picturesque views of the lush green hills, a small lake, and surrounding valleys. It takes around 1-2 hours to reach the summit, and the views from the top are simply breathtaking. Overall, Makalidurga Trek is a great way to spend a day in nature and soak in the scenic beauty of the region.

Trek is relatively easy with the marked route. You can't catch the sunrise from the top in summer as entry only begins by 5 am. The view is quite nice.

The mountain is quite steeper found it pretty tough to climb down. Guides on the tram of Banbanjara were really supportive of us and made sure we were safe. The view is amazing and it's worth it🥰

The trek was arranged nicely and it was completely safe to trek at night. Passing the night and welcoming the morning while trekking in between forests was the best feeling ever. At the peak the views are mesmerizing and the story about the fort from the guide was informative. We spent quite a bit of time at the peak and enjoyed it a lot there.

We had trekked before to the small peaks but night trekking was our first experience and was the best experience. Watching the beauty of nature during the night was worth a try and we loved it.

All our friends decided to trek here in the night and with the transport facility available it was a perfect night outing for us. The guide was great and knew the route well. We saw amazing beautiful views at night with the stars above us. At the top, the feeling was so divine and we got to see Shiva temple as well. It was a memorable experience.

We loved our visit to the Makalidurga top and the views from there. The sunrise view was breathtaking and we had captured many moments there and had the best sunrise view ever.

Trekking to the fort and seeing the Shiva temple early in the morning was indeed an amazing feeling. The views are beautiful and the climate was soothing and peaceful. It was a must-try experience.

A nice short trek. A good trek if you are a beginner. The view from the top is breathtaking.

It was so adventurous and enthralling trek. Wherever you see, it is dark but even the darkness on the paths could not stop us from reaching our destinations. Went on it with friends and had an amazing time. Must try it once. It is different from day trekking.
