Celebrate Holi in Braj: A Colorful Festival of Love and Tradition

Are you excited about Holi in 2024? If yes, you must know that it falls on 25th March this year. Usually, people celebrate the Holi festival on two days including the day before Holi as it is considered auspicious for Holika Dahan. But, as the Braj area (Vrindavan, Mathura, Barsana, Nandgaon, Govardhan, and Gokul) in Uttar Pradesh is the hometown of Lord Krishna and his love Radha, celebrate Holi for an extra week in advance. In 2024, the Holi celebrations are expected to start on March 18th and continue until March 26th, lasting a total of 9 days.

During Holi, the colorful festivities are inspired by the legendary love story of Lord Krishna, who was the eighth avatar of Vishnu, and his beloved Radha. Their hometown was Braj in Uttar Pradesh. People in this area celebrate Holi with great enthusiasm and special traditions, such as the well-known Lathmar Holi, also known as Stick Holi. The most popular places to experience Lathmar Holi are Barsana and Nandgaon.

If you want to join in these celebrations, you can choose Mathura as your starting point. You can easily reach the surrounding areas by bus or taxi from Mathura. The accommodation options in Mathura are better than in the nearby villages. Feel free to contact us for hassle-free arrangements and expert advice.

Braj Chaurasi Kos Yatra in Mathura

The significance of braj chaurasi kos yatra, the braj chaurasi kos yatra, also known as the braj bhoomi yatra .

The Braj Chaurasi Kos Yatra, also known as the Braj Bhoomi Yatra, is a sacred pilgrimage covering a distance of 84 Kos (252 km) in the Braj region. The pilgrimage includes visiting Vrindavan, with its 12 forests and 24 groves, the divine River Yamuna, the sacred hill Govardhan, and numerous holy places associated with the life and events of Lord Krishna. Every year, lakhs of devotees from distant places take this yatra, either during the monsoon or the month of Bhadon, with many walking the distance as an act of devotion.

The significance of this yatra is deeply rooted in the wish fulfilment and gratitude towards Lord Krishna. It is believed that Shri Krishna himself recalled all the sacred places to Vrindavan to fulfil the desire of his parents, Yashoda Mata and Nandbaba, who expressed their wish to go on a pilgrimage. Walking all the way around these sacred shrines during the yatra is considered to cleanse one of the sins and break the cycle of birth and death, leading to salvation.

The origin of the Braj Yatra is connected to an incident in the Shrimad Bhagawat where Lord Brahma was puzzled by the divine pranks of Lord Krishna during his childhood. To test Krishna’s divinity, Brahmaji cast a spell that made Krishna’s cows and cowherd friends (Gopas) disappear, taking them to Brahma Loka. In response, Lord Krishna assumed the forms of his friends and cows for a year. Realising his mistake and seeking forgiveness, Brahmaji was advised by Krishna to undertake the Braj Chaurasi Kos Yatra to absolve his sins. He became the first to perform this yatra, and he found release from his misdeeds through it.

The holy leela of Lord Krishna and Brahmaji’s penance emphasises the significance of the Braj Chaurasi Kos Yatra, inspiring devotees to undertake this pilgrimage with devotion and faith in Lord Krishna’s divine grace. Many tourists visiting Agra and Mathura also include the Braj Bhoomi Yatra in their itinerary as an offering to Lord Krishna. Whether fulfilling a wish, expressing gratitude, or seeking redemption, the yatra holds immense spiritual importance for devotees on their journey to Braj.

Braj – The Divine Land of Lord Krishna

Braj, also known as Brij or Brajbhoomi, is a region mainly located in Uttar Pradesh, India, centred around Mathura-Vrindavan. The word “Braj” signifies movement and refers to the land where Nand Baba, along with his cows, calves, family, and friends, dwelled and moved around. Braj holds special significance as the land of the Supreme Person, Lord Krishna’s pastimes. Shri Krishna, the charming hero of Braj, embodies all spiritual tastes, and here, he engages in endless Leela with Radha and Gopis, displaying the essence of loving relationships.

Braj is renowned for its divine connection with Lord Krishna. The Shrimad Bhagavata describes Braj as supremely pure and blessed, where the Supreme Person resides in human disguise, grazing cows and playing the flute with delight. The Skand Purana declares Braj as the abode of the Supreme Absolute Truth, Parabrahman, pervading every particle of the universe and inhabited by liberated souls enjoying ecstatic transcendental mellows.

In the Braj region, the city of Mathura holds immense sanctity as the reputed birthplace of Lord Krishna. Brajbhoomi is divided into two distinct units: the eastern part in the trans-Yamuna tract, encompassing places like Baldeo, Mahavan, Gokul, and more; and the western side of the Yamuna, covering the Mathura region, including Vrindavan, Govardhan, Nandgaon, Barsana, and others.

The city of Mathura, situated along the right bank of the Yamuna River, boasts a series of picturesque Ghats, which are steps leading to the water’s edge. The Vishram Ghat is considered the most sacred and significant, as it is believed that Lord Krishna rested there after killing Kansa. The aarti ceremony held at Vishram Ghat in the evenings is a very beautiful sight, with floating lamps illuminating the river. Boat rides in the moonlight offer a memorable experience, and a daytime boat ride provides a glimpse of all the essential ghats and historical sites.

Braj has a rich cultural heritage with numerous saints, poets, and devotees, including Vallabhacharya, Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, Rupa Goswami, Mirabai, Surdas, and others, who have composed devotional songs and poems in praise of Lord Krishna. The land exudes a unique magnetism and cosmic energy that attracts millions of pilgrims from across the globe, drawn by their faith and love for Lord Krishna.

The Place of Divine Rasleela – Forests of Braj

Forests of braj.

This forest is known as Braj due to the abundant presence of bel (bilva) trees during Krishna’s divine Rasleelas. Shri Krishna and His sakhas would graze the cows in this captivating and pleasant forest, indulging in various sports and relishing the ripe bel fruits.

In the sacred text Bhakti Ratnakar, it is described that both Rama and Krishna, along with their sakhas, joyfully savoured the ripe bilva fruits in this forest:

“It was here that Rama and Krishna, along with their sakes, ate ripe bilva fruits with great festivity.”

Goddess Lakshmi once heard Narad’s description of Shri Krishna’s sweet ras-lila and the good fortune of the gopis, which aroused an eagerness in her heart to witness this divine dance. However, only the gopis, who represent undivided and pure love (prem) for Krishna, possess the qualification to enter the ras-lila. Access to this celestial dance is granted through the mercy of Radhika, the embodiment of mahabhav (supreme love), and her true representatives, the gopis. By obtaining their blessings, one can easily gain entrance into the ras-lila.

Thus, with the desire to enter the ras-lila, Lakshmi performed severe austerities at this very place, but despite her efforts, she could not achieve her goal. To this day, she continues her penance with this longing in her heart. In the Shrimad-Bhagavata, the wives of the serpent Kaliya mention this leela in their prayers to Shri Krishna:

“Bhagavan, we are unable to understand what sadhana Kaliyanag performed that He became a proprietor of the dust of Your lotus feet. It is so rare to procure this dust that even Your wife Lakshmi was unable to obtain it, even after giving up all sense pleasures and performing austerities for a very long time in agreement with the rules and regulations.”

Nearby, you will find Krishna Kund and a sitting place (baithak) of Shri Vallabhacharya, a revered saint. There is also a temple dedicated to the goddess Lakshmi in this holy forest of Braj.

I was way young when I did the exactly tour with my parents, of course my parents too me to these places. And the itinerary looked pretty same. You just refreshed my memories. Somehow I do not have pictures to look at. Could relate to the pictures you posted here.

Thanks for sharing a detailed guide on Agra-Mathura-Vrindavan tour as many of tourists visit these places in North India. As these places are very popular but it is very difficult to plan what to see first and how to go from one city to another. But thankfully you have covered all these useful tips in your blog. I have been to Mathura and Vrindavan but not Agra and very soon planning for it.

I have been to Taj Mahal once and we were unlucky because the entire morning Taj Mahal was closed for some reason so all the visitor had to wait to the afternoon and it was crowded!

I wish we would have visit Mathura and Vrindavan as it looks as these places as a lot to offer! Thank you for a detailed guide of these places, very helpful!

I did this tour last year and had an amazing time. I was still very happy to read this article as it brought back a lot of amazing memories. Your pictures look amazing too! Thank you for sharing this lovely article.

I did not realise that Mathura and Vrindavan are so close to Agra, only 60 kms ahead! I visited those cities when I was a little child and don’t remember much from my trip except that my grandparents took me to several temples while we were there! Agra, however, was a more recent trip for me so I have to agree with Taj Mahal, Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri being the top 3 places to visit there.

I’ve always wanted to visit Agra because of the Taj Mahal! You’ve also given me enough inspiration to make it a worthwhile trek out of New Delhi to see. I think the fort would be a great historical aspect to understand Agra and the surrounding region and I love the temples that you included!

You will not believe how helpful this post is to us. I have a few friends coming in from US and wanted to cover Taj Mahal and a few places nearby and had asked me to draw up a plan for them. Now I can just ask them to see this post! Thanks for this 🙂

That’s awesome! I am sure they are going to have a great time 🙂

Its been a bit over a decade since I went on this trip. It was a super memorable one coz we took a day and half train from Chennai to Delhi! It was indeed super fun. Yeah, I did one of those coach tours from Delhi to Agra, Mathura & Vrindavan. We went to Fatehpur Sikri by ourselves later. Nostalgic…..

I have visit Mathura and Vrindavan these are amazing holy places in India. Agra is very nice too because of famous Taj Mahal and fatehpur sikri.

To be honest, never thought that the Agra area is that large. It needs two days, that is good to know.

Agra and Brindavan are my favortie places. I love the serenity and the beautiful buildings around this place. I think I’ll explore these places one more time.

Nice coverage of the place, Very informative blog and suggestion for travelers. I really like to this blog its very interesting and informative. Thanks for your amazing travel guide and your photos are mind-blowing.

A Utah Mountain Town Brings Back an Old Idea: The One-Room Schoolhouse

As a throwback ski destination, Alta thinks small, with a one-room public school to match.

WHY WE’RE HERE

We’re exploring how America defines itself one place at a time. In Utah, a one-room schoolhouse has helped preserve the family atmosphere of a cult-favorite ski town.

Reporting from Alta, Utah

As long as it has had a ski resort, Alta, Utah, has been a place where young people come to work for a season before starting life in the real world, then end up staying for two or 10 or 20 years — even a lifetime.

They come for the powder snow, which regularly tops lists of the deepest and lightest in the country. They discover the simplicity and warmth of life in a town at the dead end of a box canyon with a year-round population of roughly 300.

But a little more than 20 years ago, town officials realized that as much as Alta prided itself on being a place where generations of families return to vacation every year, it was losing families among the employees who make it run. Young people who had children left because there was no school, and the closest school district would not send a bus up the narrow canyon road.

Known as a throwback ski town, Alta turned to a throwback solution, opening a one-room public school in a former storage room in a lodge at the base of the mountain. Now, the Alta School not only educates the children of the ticket sellers, avalanche forecasters, hotel reservationists and chai latte makers, it is also a source of town pride.

The annual play written and performed by students at Our Lady of Snows, the town’s worship and gathering center, attracts a standing-room-only crowd, more than can be explained as proud parents alone. Students publish a monthly newspaper, visiting the lodges and ski shops to sell ads they design.

“It might be an overstatement,” Roger Bourke, the mayor of Alta, said, “but it ties the community together.”

Less than a century ago, there were about 139,000 one-room public schools in the United States; at last official count, in 2022, there were 166, mostly in rural areas where the nearest district is too far for students to travel each day. In Alta, the closest school is just 13 miles away, in a suburb of Salt Lake City. But the winding road up Little Cottonwood Canyon closes frequently because of avalanche danger — more than 30 times last year, when Alta had 903 inches of snow.

Beyond eliminating the treacherous commute, the school helps in the ongoing struggle to, as Mr. Bourke said, “Keep Alta Alta.” While other ski resorts have been bought up by conglomerates and developed with condos, Alta, founded in 1938, is still owned by the same families that have owned it for generations, and hardly more developed than in its earliest days as a silver mining town. There is no nightlife, no stoplight and no snowboarders allowed . Alta, as the T-shirts say, is for skiers.

The town, just four square miles, centers on the resort, and occupies mostly National Forest Service property; it has fought attempts to develop what private land there is. Signs up the canyon and stickers on skis declare opposition to a gondola the State Department of Transportation has proposed building to ferry bigger crowds up the canyon.

“It’s a different pace of life in today’s hustle and bustle,” said Brian Babbitt, a ski patroller, picking up his daughters, Miles and Collyns, after school. “They can focus on different qualities of life, recreating and being in nature, not being so stuck on a screen or a computer.”

The girls are 6 and 8 now. “They’ve been skiing on their own since they were 3 and 5, though my wife would say it’s 4 and 6,” Mr. Babbitt said. “I know 100 people by first name on the mountain, so they’re constantly being watched.” (“Really?” Miles asked.)

Most skiers visiting Alta would have no idea the school exists, though they might wonder at the pint-size skiers expertly bouncing along the mountain’s famously long traverses — that’s P.E. class.

The cars full of skiers have not begun to fill the parking lot as the 14 students start their day. With the sun just hitting Mount Baldy far above them, they begin with an observation walk alongside the rope tow that stretches from one end of the resort to the other, their teacher, Jaeann Tschiffely, slipping in small lessons about the science of weather.

Then, in through a side door at the Goldminer’s Daughter Lodge, they sharpen pencils for their daily timed math quiz, which gives Ms. Tschiffely time to take attendance.

Except that the windows are almost entirely buried under snow, the school looks like a typical classroom. But having to teach students at nine grade levels keeps Ms. Tschiffely in constant steady motion, even more than most teachers.

During math she moves between an eighth-grader working on quadratic equations and a kindergartner learning to regroup as she adds. During science, she stands over the desks of two sixth graders, using a hand-warmer and an aluminum can to demonstrated heat transfer. At a desk behind her, a fourth-grader is using a thesaurus, a knitting skein and a ruler to build a tape dispenser, a lesson on Rube Goldberg machines.

The students come together for art, watching a short video about an artist who used quilts to tell stories, then split up to make paper quilts of their own. Many tell of mountain adventures and mishaps: Collyns, in second grade, cuts shapes of soft pink and black to represent her leg and the brace she wore after she tore her A.C.L. (This leads to a bit of site-specific classroom one-upmanship: “My mom tore her A.C.L.,” one student calls over. Another replies: “My mom tore her A.C.L. twice — and her meniscus.”)

Tell Us About Where You Live

Ms. Tschiffely, whose father and grandmother both taught in one-room schoolhouses, led the school at Alta for nine years, then left for nine, teaching in schools abroad. She came back three years ago when the teacher who had taken her place left to raise her children. She had missed having the same students year after year, and the ability to individualize teaching.

“I always thought of this school as the place where I really learned how kids learn, how they progress,” she said. “We say they have to read at 5, do this when they’re 6 and do that when they’re 7. But all of my understanding of kids is that that doesn’t make sense. Development is a continuum.”

With a small, ungraded school, Ms. Tschiffely said, “We could put everyone where they were. They caught up when they caught up.”

Jenn Life, who came to Alta as a housekeeper and ended up as co-owner of the Goldminer’s Daughter Lodge, made room in the storage area for the school, and later had two children and sent them there. “There are always naysayers who say it’s too small, how will they adjust?” she said. “But they’ve all done well. They learned to work independently and be self-sufficient because the teacher was busy teaching different grades.”

Like the town, the school feels like a family. Parents help lead the P.E. classes up the mountain — the resort provides reduced-price lift tickets — and the students spend most weekends skiing together, too.

The number of students will drop by a few before the end of the school year as the ski season ends — Alta’s official last day is April 21 — and some parents head off to other seasonal jobs, as far away as Thailand. Marly Korpela, who runs reservations at the Alta Lodge, said her son, Tade, sometimes wishes there was more than just one other fourth-grader. But when he thinks about going to school in the valley, he thinks of what most people do when they think of Alta: the skiing.

“He says, ‘Then I’d have to pay for the full ticket!’”

Tourist Mauled After Rolling Down Window to Take Selfie with Bear

"I thought he wanted to be friends," the victim's friend said of the wild bear

A Scottish tourist is thankful to be alive after a close encounter with a wild bear sent her to the emergency room.

Moira Gallacher, 72, had been vacationing in Romania with her friend Charmian Widdowson when the women decided to go for a drive through the Carpathian Mountains.

During the outing, the women came across a couple of brown bears and did their best to get a photo of the wildlife.

“What happened was the bear came up to the window at my friend’s side, and no problem. It let us take a picture and went away,” Gallacher said in a video shared by Scottish outlet STV News on X (formerly Twitter) Tuesday, April 23. “But I didn’t get a proper picture, so we went back and it was at my side.”

In the clip, the injured Gallacher was seen being rolled away in a stretcher.

“I’m not going to be on STV News,” she said with a laugh.

In addition to the brief clip shared online, both women detailed the incident to the news channel .

“We saw these bears – a mummy bear, and a baby – they were gorgeous,” Widdowson said.

“But they weren’t gorgeous. The mummy bear was hungry, and thought my friend was going to be lunch,” she added.

They shared a video of their day prior to the mauling. A winding road with tall and dense trees was seen in the footage before the friends took photos of the two bears.

Recounting the moments before the mauling, Widdowson said she parked her car to be able to get a better photo.

“I thought he wanted to be friends,” she said. “The bear came and wanted to get into the car, but he started getting into the car and bit my friend.”

The women think that their conversation about food may have triggered the attack.

“My friend said, let’s get something to eat,” Widdowson told the news station. “No, you are not allowed to give food. Absolutely nothing, nothing, nothing. And I think he heard it and decided he had to eat my friend instead.”

Widdowson credits Gallacher’s survival to a particular piece of clothing.

“She was wearing a thick Marks & Spencer jacket and the poor bear got more jacket than arm,” Widdowson told the outlet.

The survivor realizes the outcome could have been much worse.

“I’m a very lucky woman,” Gallacher said.

“I was wearing a padded jacket and a top and another top – that’s what saved my arm. I’ve been very, very lucky,” she continued. “The shock has set in today, but everything’s OK now.”

Curtea de Argeș Municipal Hospital manager Andreea Gheordunescu told the outlet "a foreign patient" was being treated "on her right hand" after being bitten by a bear.

STV News notes that the largest population of European brown bears can be found in Romania. The animals, who tend to hibernate in the winter and emerge in March and April, can reach speeds of 30 mph and stand at 7 ft tall.

Moscow metro to be more tourist-friendly

A new floor sign system at the Moscow metro's Pushkinskaya station. Source: Vladimir Pesnya / RIA Novosti

For many years now, Moscow has lagged behind St. Petersburg when it comes to making life easy for tourists, especially where getting around the city is concerned. Whereas the northern capital installed English-language maps, signs and information points throughout its subway system in the late 2000s, the Russian capital’s metro remained a serious challenge for foreign visitors to navigate.

Recent visitors to Moscow may have noticed some signs that change is afoot, however. In many stations of the Moscow subway, signs have appeared on the floor – with large lettering in Russian and English – indicating the direction to follow in order to change lines. Previously, foreign visitors using the Moscow metro had to rely solely upon deciphering the Russian-language signs hanging from the ceilings.

Student volunteers help tourists find their way in Moscow

However, this new solution has a significant drawback. “The floor navigation is visible only to a small stream of people – fewer than three people per meter. During peak hours, this navigation will simply not be noticed,” said Konstantin Trofimenko, Director of the Center for Urban Transportation Studies.

One of the biggest problems for tourists in the Russian capital remains the absence of English translations of the names of subway stations in the station vestibules and on platforms. The Department of Transportation in Moscow has not commented yet as to when this problem will be solved. However, Latin transliterations of station names can already be found in the subway cars themselves.

Finding the right exit

At four of the central stations – Okhotny Ryad, Teatralnaya, Ploshchad Revolyutsii, Lubyanka and Kuznetsky Most – the city authorities have now installed colorful stands at the exits with schematic diagrams of the station’s concourse and surrounding area, which provide information about the main attractions and infrastructural facilities.

The schematic diagrams are the work of British specialists from the City ID and Billings Jackson Design firms, who have already implemented successful projects in New York and London.

According to Alexei Novichkov, expert at the Design Laboratory at the Higher School of Economics, the design of these information booths raises no objections: The color solutions, font, layout and icons are consistent with international standards.

Kudankulam

However, the stands do have some shortcomings. “Many questions are raised about the fact that the developers of these maps did not apply orientation to the north, and have provided layouts of the surrounding areas with respect to the exits,” says Novichkov. “A system like that is used for road navigators, but most of the ‘paper’ guides and maps are oriented strictly to north. The subway map is also oriented to north, so people may become confused.”

Muscovites and foreign visitors are generally positive about these navigation elements, with most of them citing the numbered exits from the subway as the most useful feature.

The fact is that many Moscow subway stations have several exits. One of the busiest central stations of the Moscow subway in particular, Kitay-Gorod, has more than a dozen exits. Previously, these exits were differentiated from each other only with signs in Russian referring to the names of streets and places of interest to which they led – making it easy for tourists and those with poor navigation skills to get confused.

Now, when making an appointment to meet a friend, instead of struggling to find the right spot when they tell you: “I'll meet you at the exit to Solyanka Street,” you can just propose to meet under a specific exit number.

“I’ve lived in Moscow for seven years,” says Angelika, a designer from Voronezh, “but I still don’t always know where to go to find the place I need, so the new schematic diagrams will be very useful. Previously, some subway stations had maps, but not with so much detail.”

Teething problems

Foreigners, meanwhile, focus their attention on other elements. “It is good that the new information boards have QR-codes, which can be ‘read’ by smartphones,” says Florentina, a writer from Vienna. But there are also shortcomings. “The English font of the information on posters and in the captions to theaters and museums is too small – you have to come very close to see it well,” she says.

Pleasant encounters on the streets of Moscow

Florentina was also dissatisfied with the fact that such posters are not provided at all subway stations: “When I was trying to find Tsaritsyno Park (a museum and reserve in the south of Moscow) at a subway station with the same name, it turned out to be quite difficult,” she says.

“There are no maps with landmarks for other areas, such as those already in the city center. There were no clear pointers in the English language, and the passers-by I met did not speak in English, so they could not help me,” she adds.

Officials say that the navigation system is gradually being redeveloped and improved. According to Darya Chuvasheva, a press representative for the Department of Transport of Moscow, the introduction of a unified navigation system will take place in stages.

“By the end of 2014, the system will first appear on the first subway stations on the Circle Line. By the end of 2015, we plan to install the system at all major stopping points, subway stations and transport interchange hubs,” says Chuvasheva.

Hema Malini’s re-election from Mathura: Tough fight or cakewalk?

The mathura lok sabha seat where hema malini seeks a third term as an mp might be a potential challenge for the bjp..

mathura tourist car

From gleaming hoardings to vehicles across the town announcing their candidates as “ Braj ka beta (child of the land of Lord Krishna)”, the election paraphernalia in Mathura may look the same as that of previous polls. However, the mood of the voters has palpably changed and they seem decisive ahead of the Lok Sabha elections 2024.

The BJP , which has fielded Hema Malini for the third time, is facing public ire over her unavailability and the tag of being a ‘ pravasi ‘ (outsider) taking centre stage of the entire poll campaign in Mathura, which goes to poll on April 26. The actor won the seat with a margin of about 3 lakh votes in 2014 and 2019.

mathura tourist car

“I left the BJP after 20 years of my selfless service to the party just because Hema Malini is being imposed upon the people of Mathura. The BJP party workers are fed up facing the public over her unavailability in the constituency and her ignorance about the issues being faced by the voters here,” said Bhanu Pratap Singh, an Independent contesting against Hema Malini after he was denied a ticket.

Singh also told the Indian Express that he raised his voice against her candidature for the third time ignoring the pre-poll surveys and mood of the public “but of no avail as no one is ready to oppose fearing punishment from the party”.

Bhanu Pratap Singh, Mathura Lok Sabha seat, hema malini

Hema Malini, 75, appeared unfamiliar with the local BJP leadership when, during a public meeting at Mant assembly segment in Mathura, she read out a few names from the paper provided by the organisers and abruptly asked about one name: ” Yeh kaun hai bhai (who is this person)?” The local leaders on the stage instantly told her he was the ‘Mandal Pramukh’. An uneasy look was quite visible on the faces of those sharing the stage with her.

Festive offer

“Being a party karyakarta (office-bearer), we have no option but to obey the organisation’s orders. We have shared our views and feedback about her candidature with the top leadership but we have not been heard. We have been facing people’s questions about her unavailability and ignorance about the constituency at the forefront. Still, we are helpless,” one of the BJP local leaders engaged in the poll campaign told The Indian Express on the condition of anonymity.

Hema Malini, Mathura Lok Sabha

Shyam Sundar Sharma, an eight-time former MLA from the Mant Assembly constituency, publicly opposes the star’s candidature “The 2024 election is different and those within the BJP miffed with her candidature are secretly supporting the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) candidate Suresh Singh, who was with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) for several years.”

“I challenge Hema Malini to tell me the names of 10 villages in the Mathura district. She is just a dummy who has been imposed upon us and is facing the opposition within the party,” he added.

Mathura

Brajwasi vs Pravasi

One political slogan from the Opposition that has successfully reached the masses in Mathura is the ‘Brajwasi vs Pravasi’ campaign against the sitting MP. Congress candidate Mukesh Dhangar’s hoardings say, “ Nahi chahiye pravasi, abki baar Brajwasi (don’t want an outsider, want a local from Braj now).”

BSP candidate Suresh Singh’s slogan is” “ Sarkari coaching, chhatravas, library- inme se kuch mila? Ya Bambai wali sansad ne chhatron ko sirf chhala. Yaad rakhiye apna hi kaam aayega (government coaching, hostel, library – did you get any of these? This MP from Mumbai just deceived the students. Remember this, a local resident will come for help)”.

The Independent candidate Pratap Singh’s campaign is based on the slogan: Mera Braj meri shaan, Braj me bajegi bansuri (flute is his election symbol). While the Opposition is banking on the Braj identity, Hema Malini’s posters also counter the narrative with- “Viksit Braj, Hema ki guarantee.” Her hoardings have a bigger picture of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath .

Mathura Lok Sabha

Mathura, which constitutes a sizable number of Rajputs (over 4 lakh), Brahmins (over 3 lakh), Jaat (3.75 lakh), Muslims (1.5 lakh) and other castes (1.25 lakh), looks divided over caste lines but sounds united over the issues of Brajwasi vs Bahari and the BJP’s incumbent two-time MP is facing an uphill task now to counter it.

She has said she is a Brajwasi as she has been coming here for the last 10 years and is an ardent Lord Krishna devotee. The BJP finds it tough to counter the opposition attack multiplied by the questions over her unavailability in the constituency over the last 10 years.

Mathura Lok Sabha

Banking on the slogan of being Brajwasi first, Congress’s INDIA bloc candidate Mukesh Dhangar is campaigning barefoot across the Braj area and kicking off public meets by bowing down to the ground.

“I am the son of this land, I am one among these Brajwasis. I filed my nomination by drinking one litre of Yamuna Jal because we revere the Yamuna river but when Hemaji was asked to do the achaman (to have the water as a part of worship) by purohit, she said no. This is what the people of Mathura have seen and decided to send her out from here now,” Dhangar said.

Watch video:

Notably, during her first bid for the Mathura Lok Sabha seat in 2014, Hema Malini and the BJP promised the rejuvenation of Yamuna and also mentioned that river cruises and boats would be functional in the holy river in their bid to promote tourism in Mathura. However, 10 years later, things are still the same, and Yamuna rejuvenation is once again one of the hottest topics in Lok Sabha elections 2024.

Shift in poll dynamics

Despite her image of an outsider, two-term anti-incumbency and infighting within the BJP leadership, along with a host of other issues — including unemployment, inflation and her unavailability in the constituency — are making this a tough fight for the BJP candidate this time. Voters openly commend ‘Modi and Yogi’ for their development works done in and around the religious sites but the BJP’s hardcore voters are also seen admitting Hema Malini’s absence from the area for five years.

Ashok Pathak, 50, sitting in front of Krishna Janm Bhoomi gate, said,” Mathura is voting for Modi and Yogi, not for any MP. We have also seen Brajwasi ruling us before; they also could not do much. Why expect much from her now?”

Mathura Lok Sabha

The other issues that resonate most on ground zero are massive unemployment and paper leaks. ” Ravindra Singh, 22, qualified for eight out of 12 government exams but was not selected for multiple reasons. Sitting in Hema Malini’s public meeting in Jawra village, he said, “I will not vote for the BJP; I will vote for Rahul Gandhi because he is a well-educated person.”

The youth said he is troubled by unemployment and the current government’s inaction to address the issue. He also added that youngsters are hopeful of Rahul Gandhi’s announcement that he will scrap the Agniveer scheme if he comes to power.

Mathura Lok Sabha

Interestingly, none of the posters, banners, hoardings, or public speeches by the BJP leaders mention employment issues. According to the Election Commission of India (ECI) data, at least 1.82 crore first-time voters and 19.74 crore young voters in the 20-29 age group are on the electoral rolls in India.

Mathura is a farmers-dominated area, and the youth aspire to join the defence forces, but there is evident anger over the implementation of the Agniveer scheme. “ Char-char saal ki naukri karke, barbad kar diya Modi ne (Modi is ruining the future of the youth by giving employment for four years),” said an elderly woman walking back from Hema Malini’s public meeting.

“Our boys have stopped preparing for Agniveer, fearing the lack of future security. We have been giving Modi our votes but getting back unemployment in return. He should think of us.”

Mathura Lok Sabha

Rural vs Urban divide

The voices for and against the current regime visibly differ in rural Mathura and urban periphery. In and around the city hails ‘Modi and Yogi’ and gives an advantage to Hema Malini for the hattrick, whereas the villages in all five Assembly segments- Mant, Baldev, Mathura, Goverdhan and Chhata- sound disheartened and seeking a ‘ parivartan ‘ (change).

Baldev Kumar, who runs a tea stall outside Rawal village, said, “We are so much troubled by unemployment. We openly support Congress because the candidate (Mukesh Dhanagar) is a farmer like us. The rural areas of Mathura are supporting him in a big way.”

Hema Malini adopted this village in 2014 under the Sansad Adarsh Gaon scheme and spent Rs 35 lakh on the road, street lights, drinking water, and other basic amenities. The Rawal village has historical significance as it’s the birthplace of Radha Rani, and people who come to Krishna Janmbhoomi also offer obeisance to this place.

Mathura Lok Sabha

With over 800 villages, 504 gram panchayats. Mathura has a total rural electorate of approximately 15 lakh.

Bhanu Pratap said, “Rural population is facing multiple issues like unavailability of meetha pani as the groundwater here is khara pani. Hema Malini and the state BJP government have only been able to install the RO system for just 31 villages out of 800. Women and girls still fetch drinking water from 2-3 km away.”

The farmers’ distress is another major issue the BJP finds challenging to address. “We all have been seeing how the BJP is treating the farmers, but also, we have been made paralysed since the Chhata Suger Mill got shut in 2008. We used to grow sugarcane earlier but after the mill’s closure, we had no choice but to shift to paddy, which is not profitable. Ahead of every election, they are promising the mill’s revival but it has still not been functional,” said Ram Khiladi Dhangar, a farmer in Naglapula in the Baldev area.
