Why You Need A Travel Budget

One side tropical beach with text so you can enjoy this. The other side is a stressed out couple over money with the words without this.

Listen, I am all for spending a little extra to do things our family doesn’t get to do at home.

But there is nothing more anxiety-inducing than running out of money on a trip, or having to pay off huge credit card bills at 28%  interest because you didn’t plan ahead.

This is where a vacation budget can really help.

It doesn’t mean you can’t have fun or spend money.

Creating a budget will actually help you be able to afford your dreams. Plus be able to relax & have fun on your vacation knowing you won’t be in debt when you get back home.

The trip budget calculator will make financial planning fun, and easy.

How To Set Your Travel Budget & Determine Expenses

1. determine your overall travel budget.

First things first. Decide on your overall vacation budget or the money you are willing to spend on this trip.

When determining your overall vacation budget, you’ll want to consider a few things:

  • How much money are you willing to spend on this trip?
  • How much have you already saved?
  • How long do you plan to go for? (more or less time can impact your budget)
  • How many people will be travelling? (some places like Europe limit 4 people to a hotel room, this can significantly impact cost)
  • When do you want to travel and how much time do you have to add to your vacation fund?
  • How much extra can you afford to put away every week / month on top of your regular bills & household expenses?
  • Is there any way you can decrease household expenses, or increase your income to add to your vacation fund faster?

Just make sure it’s a realistic budget. It doesn’t do anybody any good to use too low or too high numbers as a starting point.

2. Do Your Research

The type of trip you want to take, the length and the type of activities you want to do, will really impact your budget.

For example a week long trip to Thailand will be much different than a week in Japan, or a trip to Disneyworld.

Do some intial research to give you an idea of what your basic travel expenses will costs, so you can have ballpark figures to enter in the travel cost calculator.

You can always google average costs of living / travelling at your destination.

Careful planning is an important part of any travel budget.

3. Find Ways to Cut Costs

Unless you have a rich benefactor, or suddenly won the lottery, it’s a good idea to consider ways you can cut costs, save money and use your travel budget wisely.

Besides using our holiday budget calculator, our favourite ways to save money on travel expenses.

Transportation & Accommodation

  • Find flight deals & error fares : The best way is with Going (Formerly Scott’s Cheap Flights) Flight tickets can be a big expense and make up a good portion of the total cost usually.
  • Consider housesitting: Trusted Housesitters is our go-to site for housesitting around the world.
  • Rent a place with a kitchen : Save money on food with a vacation rental . They can also be cheaper than renting multiple hotel rooms if you have a large family or group.

  • Book early: Hotels, flights and trains are generally cheaper booked in advance. You won’t want to risk paying significantly more waiting until last minute.

General Money Saving Tips

  • Travel off season or peak season: Not only is it usually much cheaper, there’s usually fewer tourists.
  • Use a credit card with no foreign transaction fees : Those transaction fees can really add up. Also consider if travel credit cards with points are for you.

  • Avoid popular destinations:  The most popular touristy destinations  often cost a lot of money, compared to smaller, lesser known destinations.
  • Consider using travel agents: Sometimes a travel agent can find you a great deal, with much less work on your part.
  • Adjust your travel style: Luxury resorts may be out of your price range. Road trips, camping trips can be just as memorable for for a family vacation.

As another travel season approaches, many consumers are planning how much they’ll need to spend on such items as flights and accommodations, with the caveat that these costs are higher than they’ve been in previous years.

While inflation has slowed, its effects persist. According to Bankrate’s holiday travel survey , 77 percent of holiday travelers are adjusting their plans due to the impacts of inflation and rising costs. Strategic financial planning will be essential for managing travel costs while still making invaluable travel experiences.

Vacation costs vary tremendously depending on such factors including the destination, accommodations and activities. Here are some average costs to help you budget your vacation and manage increased costs.

Key vacation cost statistics

  • For a one-week vacation in the U.S., the average cost for one person is $1,984. (Budget Your Trip)
  • A one-week vacation in the U.S. for two people jumps to an average cost of $3,969. (Budget Your Trip)
  • Round-trip flights to Europe from the U.S. average around $813, as of June 2023. (Hopper)
  • The average cost for a double occupancy hotel room in the U.S. is $259 per night. (Budget Your Trip)
  • The average cost for a hotel room in Europe is $205 per night. (Hopper)
  • The most expensive city to visit in the U.S. is Key West, Florida ($551 per day), followed by Moab, Utah ($388 per day) and Nantucket, Massachusetts ($350 per day). (Budget Your Trip)

How much does a vacation cost?

The average cost of a one-week vacation in the U.S. for one person is $1,984 , up by over $400 from last year’s average. Many Americans, keeping in mind the cost of traveling, plan to take various measures to reduce how much they’re spending on such expenses as travel and accommodations.

Transportation costs

Transportation can account for a large chunk of your vacation budget, so it’s a good idea to start with these costs when planning your trip. In addition to airfare, factor in any other costs such as car rental, gasoline, tolls and parking fees.

Airfare tends to peak in June, with the highest prices around the summer months in general. International travel has been especially costly: The cost of flights to Europe rose 35 percent in 2023 from the previous year, while airfare to Asia rose 23 percent in 2023, according to Hopper.

To keep traveling budget-friendly amid rising costs, many consumers are making changes to their plans. Over one-quarter (27 percent) say they’re driving instead of flying to their destination this year, according to Bankrate’s holiday travel survey. Meanwhile, 21 percent say they’re traveling a shorter distance, and 17 percent say they’re using rewards points or loyalty programs to help pay for travel.

Keep in mind: Twenty-seven percent of holiday travelers this year say they're driving instead of flying due to increased prices. Depending on how far you're traveling, driving may be a more affordable alternative than flying.

Hotel and other accommodation costs

Hotel prices vary dramatically depending on the location, demand and time of year. An oceanfront hotel room in South Florida, for example, will cost less in the winter months than in summer, when deals can be found.

If your budget isn’t generous and you’re OK with fewer comforts, hostels or a recreational vehicle park can save you money.

When planning a vacation, you can also save by choosing a destination that’s less popular, while still offering value in experience. France, one of the most popular destinations, costs on average $1,863 to visit for one week. Meanwhile, the average cost for a week-long trip to Zagreb, Croatia, costs $577 on average, according to Budget Your Trip.

Food and entertainment costs

Food and entertainment expenses can lighten your wallet if you don’t draft a thorough vacation budget. They tend to be among the last costs travelers consider when planning a trip.

The average cost of food for one person on vacation, per day, is $58, according to Budget Your Trip. This figure doesn’t include snacks, tips or alcohol.

Budgeting for a family vacation can be trickier than budgeting for a solo trip, especially if young children are coming along. You probably won’t be eating at posh restaurants and strolling museums with kids in tow, but you likely will have to budget for a bigger hotel room and reservations for activities they’ll enjoy. Don’t forget to look for group rates and discounts, if eligible.

Average cost of a vacation by generation

Data from Squaremouth , a travel insurance company, shows that older generations spend more on travel than younger generations, on average. The Silent generation — the oldest living generation — spends over $3,500 per trip, on average. By contrast, Generation Zers spend just under $2,000 per trip, on average.

The higher vacation costs for older generations may be due to them having more savings , longer trips or a number of other factors. Still, while Gen Zers are spending less on travel, they’re more likely to travel for fun : 68 percent of Gen Zers planned to travel for leisure in 2023, according to Bankrate’s travel problems survey .

Younger generations are also more likely to change their travel plans due to inflation. Of Gen Zers, 86 percent are changing their travel plans this year for cost reasons, followed by millennials (80 percent), Gen Xers (77 percent) and baby boomers (68 percent).

Here’s how much each generation is spending on vacations.

Vacations and inflation

Increased costs for airlines, accommodations and other travel-related services contribute to higher overall trip expenses. Since this time last year, the average cost for a one-week vacation in the U.S. has risen by $406, or about 26 percent.

These high costs, coupled with diminished purchasing power, prompts consumers to make adjustments in their travel plans, either by choosing more economical options, shortening their vacations or, in the worst case, forgoing travel altogether. According to Bankrate’s holiday travel survey, 23 percent of U.S. adults traveling this holiday season say they will be taking fewer trips this year due to inflation, and 21 percent say they’ll be shortening the duration of their vacations to make up for costs.

International travel prices have surged, as well. European hotel prices, for instance, experienced a staggering 37 percent increase this summer compared to the previous year, according to data from Hopper.

But you don’t have to give up the idea of traveling this year because of costs. Instead, strategic planning and setting priorities can ensure you’re traveling within the capacity of your wallet.

Vacation budgeting tips

Almost a third (31 percent) of U.S. adults traveling this holiday season say traveling will strain their budget, according to Bankrate’s holiday travel survey.

“We have most definitely put a bit too much emphasis on spending money during the holidays,” says Aja Evans, LMHC, Financial Therapist at Laurel Road, a division of KeyBank. “While I love the value of coming together during this time, the costs can quickly add up.”

Here are some tips to help you get the most trip for your money :

  • Determine how much you can spend on the vacation and draft a budget.
  • Start a vacation fund, such as a sinking fund , in a high-yield savings account .
  • “Prioritize your must-attend events” rather than traveling for every holiday, Evans says.
  • Avoid paying high prices for lodging at popular destinations by finding accommodations slightly farther away.
  • Save money by visiting destinations during off-seasons.
  • Search for inexpensive flights and book in advance. You might save money on international flights by booking the cheapest flight to the destination country, followed by another flight to the particular city you wish to visit.
  • If traveling abroad, find places that offer the best currency exchange rates.
  • Consider using a prepaid debit card to control daily spending or a good travel rewards credit card to earn cash back on certain purchases.
  • Plan meals, and work them into your budget accordingly. If you wish to eat at a high-end restaurant for dinner, choose an inexpensive meal for lunch.
  • Plan what you’ll need to bring, and pack those items in your travel bag. This can help you avoid buying things on the trip that you forgot to bring, such as toiletries or over-the-counter medicine.

Budgeting for a family vacation can be trickier than budgeting for a solo trip, especially if young children are coming along. You probably won’t be eating at posh restaurants and visiting many museums with young kids in tow, but you will have to pay for a bigger hotel room and plan for activities they’ll enjoy. Don’t forget to look for group rates and discounts, if eligible.

Bottom line

The main budgetary components of a vacation include lodging, transportation, food and entertainment — all of which cost more now than they did in past years, due to the effects of high inflation.

While all aspects of a vacation can be pricey, it’s possible to lower your costs significantly through such activities as budgeting, traveling during the off-season, finding affordable ways (and places) to eat and planning early.

And, of course, setting money aside early and often can help you get the most out of your vacation. “Setting up a sinking fund you contribute to throughout the year can alleviate the last-minute pressure to spend money you don’t have,” Evans of Laurel Road says.

Can You Afford to Travel?

Creating a travel budget isn’t all about boring spreadsheets and searching for low budget bargains — a finely-crafted budget it is designed to maximize your total travel experience.

Let’s start out easy here. You may have dreams of globetrotting and living your best life in distant lands, but can you actually afford it?

The amount you have to spend on your trip will need to be proportionate to the place you are visiting. By that, we mean that some destinations can be done on the cheap, while others will be a bit more of an investment.

Where you want to stay, what you intend to do when you get there, and physically how far away you will be from home can all have a considerable bearing on how deep your pockets will need to be.

Before you book yourself silly, really break down the potential costs of your dream trip and tally it up with the amount of money you will realistically have to fund it.

Bottom Line: Sometimes, it may be better to put your plans on hold until you have saved up enough cash to really experience a place, rather than rushing to get there and missing out on some of the best bits.

Whether you are a plan-well-in-advance sort of traveler or more of a fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants kind of person, there are different ways to approach setting out your budget based on what works best for you.

Plan Your Adventure Well in Advance

The most traditional way to book a vacation is to think of somewhere you want to go, plan your vacation dates, and decide how long you want to stay. This kind of advanced planning is the usual go-to for most travelers, as it allows you to book time off of work or plan trips around school semesters, and gives you the opportunity to firm up plans before you leave.

Knowing when and where you are going also has another key advantage — it gives you plenty of time to save up all the cash you will need to really enjoy your time there. Booking in advance also means you get your choice of cheaper accommodation at better rates.

Book months in advance and you can research your planned itinerary and potential expenditure, and maybe even save enough extra for upgrades of luxuries to make your adventure truly special. This kind of planning is a great incentive for saving hard.

Travel Based on Your Bank Balance

If, on the other hand, you want to take your cash and get the hell out of dodge, you can work backward to identify the most amount of fun you can have for your money. If you are feeling lucky, and you know how much you are willing to spend, the world really is your oyster.

The awesome power of the internet has made impulse traveling even easier, as you can simply hit up any number of booking sites to find an exciting destination, as well as suitable flights, accommodation, and excursions in just a few clicks.

Another great way to make your budget go further is to think outside the box. Visiting popular destinations out of season, taking shorter vacation times, or even looking at places away from the main tourist trail can all make your money go further.

A trip to the legendary Yosemite National Park during April or May, for example, is a great way to experience some of the most iconic open spaces in America before the schools let out, or hit the beaches of Miami or the Florida Keys during September and October when tourists shy away from the increased risk of stormy weather.

You can also look at alternatives to the more traditional resort destinations to get more bang for your buck. Consider a trip to Reno instead of Las Vegas, hit the slopes in Winter Park instead of the sky-high prices in Vail, or take in the history of Williamsburg and avoid the price tags of New York or Los Angeles on your next city break.

Travel Budget Considerations

When planning your travel budget, there are lots of different things to consider. Break down your budget into subsections to make it easier to plan and stick to:

One of the most essential elements of your travel plan will revolve around the legal and local requirements for travel to and from your destination. You must research any visa requirements and restrictions before you fly, and be sure to have all the documentation you need before you leave.

Most countries will have their own individual and very specific entry requirements, and there may be restrictions on how much local currency you can bring with you, as well as how long you can stay.

As a very rough guide, some examples of the requirements for U.S. citizens could include:

  • Travel to Europe — If you are traveling to or through any of the main 26 European countries, you must know the requirements of the Schengen Agreement, which eliminates borders and assumes that travelers will be able to enjoy up to 3-months of visa-free travel. This will change in January 2021 with the introduction of the ETIAS .
  • Travel to Australia — You must have a valid U.S. passport and an Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) to enjoy up to 90 days of travel in Australia.
  • Travel to Central America — You will not need a visa to visit most Central American countries, but you may need a tourist card for some destinations (~$10) to allow stays of up to 90 days visa-free.
  • Travel To South Africa — You must have a valid U.S. passport, but do not need a visa for stays of 30 days or less.

Check out our guide to tourist visa information on over 100 countries.

There are many great reasons why you should always buy travel insurance coverage for your trips overseas, and only 1 reason not to. Trust us. If the worst should happen while you are away, you will wish you hadn’t tried to save money by skipping on the insurance, so make sure you always make space for travel insurance in your travel budget .

The best travel insurance policy does not necessarily have to be the most expensive one you find, but it probably won’t be the cheapest either. With this in mind, shop around and speak to a variety of providers before committing to any 1 product.

There will be different levels of coverage available to suit the requirements of every type of traveler, from lone backpackers to family vacations, but at the very least you should try to include:

  • Emergency medical expenses
  • Repatriation expenses
  • Cancellation or curtailment coverage
  • Lost baggage coverage
  • Travel delay/missed departure coverage
  • Journey disruption coverage
  • Personal liability coverage
  • Legal expenses coverage
  • Electronics loss/theft and damage coverage

Depending on where you go, what you’ll be doing, and the nature of your trip, you may want to also consider dedicated financial protection that could include specific coverage for:

  • Winter sports coverage
  • Terrorism disruption coverage
  • Cruise coverage
  • Business coverage
  • Sports equipment coverage

It is important to remember that the domestic health insurance that you use at home will not necessarily cover you if you get into medical trouble overseas . Don’t leave it to chance — invest wisely in your travel insurance and never skimp on the coverage just to save yourself a few bucks before you go.

You should also look into insurance coverage for your prized electrical items and personal belongings, too . While we would recommend leaving the diamonds at home, unless you are going somewhere exceptionally glamorous, many of us will take expensive electronics with us everywhere we go.

Find coverage that offers repairs or replacement for damaged, broken, lost, or stolen items before you go.

Hot Tip: There are some credit cards with travel insurance , so you might already have some coverage without knowing it!

map of world syringe vaccination

Some parts of the world pose more of a risk to our health than others. By ensuring that you have all the travel vaccinations you need before you go, you can reduce the risk of developing serious diseases that your immune system may not be used to.

You can pretty much be vaccinated against all of the world’s most common communicable diseases at your local doctor’s office, health care center, or health department, and there will be medical professionals who will be able to provide you with useful information for your trip.

You will need to do your own research before you travel and speak to healthcare providers about the risks. But, as a rough guide to keep in mind when planning your travel budget, here are some of the most common travel vaccinations and their approximate costs:

  • Cholera — A single-dose oral vaccine costs around $45.
  • Hepatitis A — A single-dose vaccine costs around $115.
  • Japanese Encephalitis — 2 doses given 4 weeks apart costs around $290 per injection.
  • Meningococcal Disease — This single-dose vaccine is recommended from pre-teenage years and costs around $135.
  • Rabies — A series of 3 or 4 injections into the muscles over the course of 4 weeks costs around $3000 for the entire course.
  • Typhoid Fever — A single oral dose for anyone over 6 years old costs around $60.
  • Yellow Fever — This vaccine is not stocked everywhere, but if you can find a clinic that offers it, you will need a single shot costing as much as $350.
  • Malaria — There is no single vaccine, but antimalarial tablets can be taken to reduce the risk of contracting the disease by 90%. These may need to be taken as far as 3 months in advance and can cost anything from $20 a pack up to $260 per pack.

What you need to take with you will depend very much on where you headed. Whether you choose to travel light or max out your luggage allowance is up to you, but there are plenty of ways to help keep costs down when it comes to packing for your next adventure.

Compile a Capsule Wardrobe

Travel guides always bang on about the legendary “capsule wardrobe” — but it literally is a real thing. By taking 7 or 8 items of clothing with you that can be worn in a variety of ways you can dress for days at a time without worrying about overfilling your luggage or maxing out your travel budget.

Choose 2 pants, skirts or jeans, 3 tops, 1 sweater, 1 dress or a smart shirt and a coat or jacket, and you should be pretty much good to go. Throw in beachwear, sports gear, or thermals as-needed and some socks and underwear to see yourself sorted for the duration of your stay.

Another way to keep costs down is to avoid buying new stuff for every vacation . Your favorite bikini, flip flops, party dress, or even hoodie should be shown off time and time again, so never feel the need to replace your vacation clothing unless you really need to.

Here are some destination-specific packing lists:

  • Beach Vacation Packing List
  • Cruise Vacation Packing List
  • Disney Vacation Packing List

If you want to take your travel camera with you, your GoPro for awesome live video, your phone, tablet, laptop, headphones , or any other bits of kit — think carefully about whether or not you really need it.

Taking more expensive gear with you increases the risk of stuff getting lost, broken, or stolen, as well as weighing your luggage down and tying you to charging ports and electrical sockets.

Keeping Clean

Most people like to have their favorite toiletries with them, but save money and space in your luggage by not taking full-size products.

You needn’t even worry about wasting money on cute little travel size products either. Simply decant your full-size bottles and pots into smaller travel containers instead . This is super easy to do, meets with TSA regulations, and saves you a few dollars here and there.

Alternatively, buy what you need when you arrive. Most destinations and airports will have plenty of shops to choose from. One area where you shouldn’t cut costs, however, is sunscreen. Buy the best you can, ideally from a trusted brand, before you leave.

Finally, check if the airline you are using charges extra for checked baggage and if so, see if you can get away with just a carry-on case instead.

The amount you pay for your flights will vary widely depending on a wide number of variants, including:

  • Your destination
  • Who you choose to fly with
  • Whether you fly direct
  • Whether you fly return or one-way
  • The day of the week and time of day that you fly, and even the time of year
  • Where you fly from
  • When you book

There are many different ways to fly around the skies, but here are some ways to bag cheaper flights :

  • Use Points and Miles — If you aren’t accumulating points to fly, read this beginner’s guide to get started.
  • Book as Early as You Can — Flights often significantly increase in price within 3 weeks of the departure date.
  • Stay Flexible — Flights leaving on different days or at times of day can be cheaper than others.
  • Don’t Dismiss Discount Airlines — Short journeys, internal flights, and even some international journeys can be way cheaper on discount, no-frills airlines.
  • Sign Up and Shop Around — Sign up with airlines direct to be notified of discounts and flash sales, and be sure to check in on all airlines that fly to your preferred destination.
  • Use Aggregation Sites — Sometimes this is a winner, sometimes it isn’t — but don’t be afraid to try. Sites like Kayak or Skyscanner can be good, but don’t just accept the first price they give you.
  • Buy Connecting Flights — It can be cheaper to buy 2 separate connecting flights than a direct 1. Check your destination and see who stops where along the route.

Again, how much you spend on where you stay is entirely up to you. Keeping costs down can be harder in large cities or expensive beach resorts, but there are ways to rest your head without losing your mind over the cost of it all.

Whether you are going for an all-out 5-star luxury or a family-friendly motel room, there are always deals to be had. Book direct through the hotel, include weeknights or a Sunday night in your stay, and be flexible on location.

Hot Tip: A hotel just outside of town, for example, will offer more attractive nightly rates and free parking and will usually represent better value for money than a downtown hotel will.

Renting a private home or vacation apartment on a short term basis can be much more affordable than a hotel. You can also find some superb properties for rent, complete with everything you need to enjoy your stay.

Fully-equipped kitchens, parking, TVs, and even pools often come standard and depending on your destination, there are lots of great Airbnbs and other holiday rental websites available.

If you are heading to the coast, the backcountry, or just getting out into the great outdoors, camping can completely transform your experience. Many campsites come complete with showers and cooking facilities and even pools, sports facilities, and fitness centers. You can take your own tent or rent one.

Another great way to save money on accommodation is to look at hostels in the area. A far cry from old fashioned student accommodation, many modern hostels are clean, bright, and modern and offer a combination of dorm-style bedrooms and private double or family rooms with en-suite facilities.

Hot Tip: Hostels are a great way to stay right in the middle of some of the most expensive cities in the world.

Rent a Recreational Vehicle

Another great choice if you are heading out on the open road, RVs can save you a fortune as you literally take your accommodation with you. RV trips are fun, family-friendly, and provided you aren’t always in a gas station, a great way to save money on where you stay.

RVshare and Outdoorsy are 2 companies that rent out campers and RVs.

You can pretty much rent any kind of vehicle , anywhere in the world. Although if you are staying in a city, public transport is a much more useful and affordable proposition.

The same rules also apply to some intercontinental trips, as well. For example, it can be easier and cheaper to travel through Europe using trains and buses than worrying about having to take care of a car when you get there.

If you want to explore out of the way destinations, hard to reach beaches, or just like the idea of being free to come and go as you please, car hire is readily available in most corners of the world.

Before you commit to it, think about the rental fees, fuel costs, and other potential expenditures and compare the costs of using public transport in your chosen destination.

Car Rental

Car hire here in the U.S. will vary depending on the type of car you choose and how long you intend to hire it. Small city cars are the most cost-effective, and big SUVs, 4x4s and luxury cars can also be hired if you have deep pockets.

When it comes to car rental, keep your costs down by:

  • Booking your vehicle in advance
  • Looking outside the airport as you may get a better deal in town
  • Choosing a practical vehicle to suit your needs, not your dream supercar
  • Being aware of mileage limits and one-way fees
  • Use a credit card with car rental insurance , so you can be ready to turn down unnecessary add-ons and cross-sells that you don’t need
  • Making sure the vehicle is checked for damage before you take the keys
  • Only hiring it for as long as you need it
  • Keeping your eyes out for deals on particular types of car, and better prices for longer-term rentals

Most tourist hotspots, big towns, cities, and even some iconic landmarks will offer a wide range of public transport options to get you around. There will be more choice and more frequent services in highly populated areas, while services may become more restricted further out in the countryside or suburbs.

If you are clever, you could save yourself a small fortune by grabbing good deals on public transport, leaving you with more cash to spend on the fun things in life.

Try these to tips for traveling around town on the cheap:

  • Buy daily, weekly or even monthly travel passes in advance
  • Bulk buy tickets online or via an app
  • Take advantage of student passes or discounted fares for families, seniors, or children
  • Avoid traveling during peak commuter times
  • Services like Greyhound offer cheaper fares for mid-week journeys
  • Sign up for early notification of flash sales and other promotional codes and discounts

Wherever you are headed, there will no doubt be plenty of things to do and places to see when you get there. The key to not missing a single thing is researching everything before you leave.

Have a plan in place of all the activities you want to take part in and the attractions you want to see and integrate the potential entrance costs, additional fees, and other expenses into your initial budget.

With a bit of luck, you will be able to find plenty of local discounts, city passes, and money-saving ways to see all of the very best attractions at rock bottom prices.

Pick up a copy of the local listings magazine or newspaper and check out free events , as well as using the coupons and discount codes they supply for all kinds of attractions. You can also subscribe to online discount sites like Groupon to find discounted ticket prices.

Historical landmarks, museums , art galleries, theme parks , sporting events, concerts, and many more attractions often offer reduced entrance prices at off-peak times or group discounts to entice visitors in. Some even have a free entrance day once a month.

Big cities often have lots of free entertainment on offer, too. Check out the artsy districts of major cities for street entertainers and free shows. If you are heading to the beach, research costs such as sunbed rental, locker rental, and even the menus at local restaurants to gauge an idea of how much a day on the beach could potentially cost you.

If you want to try your hand at surfing, sailing, or other kinds of water sports, you may want to get back on the internet and find reduced price lessons or discounts for group bookings.

Colosseum during daytime

While you may have budgeted every dollar down to the last cent, you should also keep a contingency plan for some pocket money . Days out in the town, lazy afternoons on the beach, or even a trip on a planned excursion can present you with lots of little unknown expenses.

Whether you need to buy an extra bottle of water, some sunscreen for your face, or entrance to additional attractions, keeping a little cash on you is a good way to be prepared.

Large amounts of cash should never be carried about your person while you are out exploring, but a couple of dollars stashed into your pocket or travel wallet and can be incredibly useful.

In order to keep your money safe, you should:

  • Never flash wads of cash
  • Keep your notes and loose change somewhere safe like your inside pocket or in a money belt
  • Carry small denomination notes and coins
  • Understand the local currency you are carrying, so you known how much to give over when paying

Walk-around money is simply a little buffer to keep you going, but set yourself a daily budget and stick to it.

These days, almost everyone travels at some point. This means that those unusual and unique products that we used to buy as souvenirs are no longer as sought after as they once were.

Nearly every tourist destination on earth will be able to sell you tacky bits and pieces for you to take home, but savvy travelers bypass these and look for more personalized and unique mementos to take home with them instead.

Bottom Line: A t-shirt here, a guide book there, and lots of little bits and pieces in between can soon add up. Spend wisely, and if you must buy gifts and souvenirs, choose ones that have a special meaning to you, that you can treasure forever.

To help make your research easier, some clever folks who have traveled before you have made websites that can help you to research and plan every single aspect of your next big adventure and what the costs involved may be.

If you put aside just $100 a month, for example, you will be able to have $1200 to play with in just a year. This amount may not pay for a new life abroad, but it could you buy a week by the ocean.

Bottom Line: Think of where you want to go to, find out how much it will cost, and then set a monthly savings goal and stick to it. Some months you may have to sacrifice on your social life or shopping habits, but it will all be worth it in the end.

Multiple Savings Accounts

Once you know how much you need to save each month, be sure to physically remove that money from your day to day bank account. Set up at least 1 separate savings account and electronically move it , or set up an automated payment to leave your regular account on payday.

Visualization

Re-train your brain to save instead of spend, and you will be able to tally up every cent you save with something amazing . Your first $150 saved, for example, could mean that you have those tickets for that boat party in Miami in the bag, or that you are on your way to paying for a 4-star hotel instead of a mid-range one.

Whether you are dreaming of trekking up the Himalayas, backpacking around Asia, Interailing through Europe , or a long-awaited family vacation, seeing what your savings can afford will super motivate you to save more.

Wherever you are planning on traveling to, being in control of your finances will make your experience even more amazing. Worrying about getting into debt on your credit cards or not having the cash in your pocket to really explore the region will ruin your adventures.

Save hard, spend well, and look for ways to save money across every aspect of your trip. Plan your spending before you go and keep track of your expenditure while you travel. There are deals to be had on flights, accommodation, food, attractions, and almost every area of your next vacation. Plan in advance and enjoy knowing that you are having the best time for less.

Why Use A Travel Budget Calculator?

While travel is incredibly fulfilling, trip expenses can certainly add an element of stress. From airfare and accommodation to meals, sightseeing, shopping, and miscellaneous costs, managing finances effectively can become a daunting task.

That’s where the role of a travel budget calculator becomes crucial. While there are many reasons to use a budget calculator for travel, here are some of the main benefits:

1. Stress-free travel planning

First and foremost, a vacation budget calculator can dramatically ease your planning process. Instead of manually listing out and totaling all possible vacation expenses, the calculator does the heavy lifting for you. It’s an efficient tool that streamlines the entire budgeting process, helping you plan your trip without getting lost in a sea of numbers.

2. Customized trip budgeting

Not all travelers are the same, and neither are their budgets. For instance, creating a solo travel budget will look different than creating a budget for a luxury trip. By accounting for your unique needs and spending habits, it helps you make informed financial decisions that fit your travel aspirations.

3. Avoid spending surprises

Unanticipated costs can be a traveler’s worst nightmare. My trip budget calculator helps you avoid unpleasant financial surprises on your trip. By considering a comprehensive set of potential costs, it provides you with a realistic budget that takes into account everything from essential travel expenses to leisure activities and even potential emergency costs.

4. Financial control

By providing a clear financial roadmap for your journey, a vacation budget calculator enables greater financial control. You can track your expenditures, identify areas where you might be overspending, and adjust your budget accordingly.

5. Facilitates travel savings

When you have a clear understanding of your travel expenses, it becomes easier to identify areas where you can save money. A travel budget calculator can help pinpoint these opportunities, whether it’s choosing more budget-friendly accommodation, opting for public transport over taxis, or prioritizing your must-do activities.

Factors To Consider When Planning A Travel Budget

When it comes to travel budgeting, knowing what to include in your calculations can make all the difference. Here are some key factors that the below holiday budget calculator takes into account, providing you with an accurate and realistic travel budget:

1. Transportation

Transportation costs are often one of the largest expenses. Consider all forms of transportation you will need: flights, trains, buses, taxis, car rentals, or even ferries. Don’t forget to account for transportation to and from airports or train stations.

For instance, I know personally that taxis to and from JFK add up to about $200, which is a pretty solid dent in my travel spending.

2. Accommodation

Lodging costs can vary greatly depending on location, time of year, and the level of luxury you prefer. From budget hostels to luxury resorts, your accommodation choice plays a big role in your travel budget.

3. Food & Drink

Consider both dining out and grocery costs. Remember, touristy areas often have higher prices for meals, and don’t forget to include a budget for trying local delicacies or more upscale dining experiences if that’s your preference. Additionally, keep in mind that alcohol can increase your bill considerably.

4. Activities & Sightseeing

Whether it’s museum entrance fees, guided tours, or adventure activities, these trip costs can add up quickly. Research the costs of the attractions you want to visit and add them to your budget. If it makes sense, consider weaving in some free experiences.

5. Local Transportation

Consider the costs of getting around your destination. This might include public transportation, taxis, or the cost of gas or car rental for a road trip .

6. Shopping & Souvenirs

Whether it’s a postcard, a t-shirt, or local crafts, make sure you have a budget set aside for souvenirs and shopping if it makes sense for you.

7. Emergency Funds

It’s always a good idea to have some money set aside for unexpected costs. This could include anything from a sudden health issue to a lost passport or unplanned extra nights.

8. Travel Insurance

While it’s an added expense, travel insurance can save you a significant amount of money in the event of trip cancellations, lost luggage, or medical emergencies. Personally, I recommend SafetyWing , which is budget-friendly while still providing robust coverage.

9. Tips & Gratuities

In many cultures, tipping is customary, and not accounting for it can lead to awkward situations. Research the tipping etiquette for your destination and include it in your budget. You might also download an app like Global Tipping to help.

10. Connectivity

Depending on your destination, you may need to consider the cost of local SIM cards or portable Wi-Fi devices to stay connected. Luckily, buying a SIM card in your destination is typically budget-friendly, as is buying an eSIM from a company like Airalo .

Free Travel Budget Calculator (With Instructions)

Now let’s go over the vacation cost calculator itself and how to use it.

Step 1. Enter your intentended budget. Start by entering your intended trip budget at the top – as in, the total budget you plan to spend – and then your expenses in the following rows.

Pro tip: when creating your trip budget, I recommend considering what aspects of travel are most important to you as well as your unique travel style. For instance, if you’re like me and think experiences are what make travel special, you might allot more of your budget to the Activities category.

Step 2. Pay attention to travel category instructions. You’ll also want to note which categories ask you for your total spend, like Flights, and which ask you for your per day spend, like Food and Lodging.

Step 3. Adjust for how many people you’re traveling with. Finally, make sure to note how many travelers you’re calculating for, which will change the “per day per person” totals. If you only want to calculate the trip budget for yourself, enter “1” as the number of travelers.

Step 4. Calculate your vacation budget. Once you hit “Calculate,” the calculator will tally up your expenses and let you know if you’re over or under your budget – and by how much. You’ll also get a pie chart visually showing you where you’re spending the most money.

Step 5. Adjust your budget. With this information, you’ll be able to see exactly where you may be overspending as well as where you have some wiggle room. Adjust accordingly.

Instructional notes:

  • If there is a category where you’re spending $0, please put “0” in the line field. Otherwise, you may receive an error.
  • This holiday cost calculator looks at your per person, per day costs.
  • If you’d prefer to calculate by your total spend for each category – or if you’d like this calculator on its own standalone page to bookmark for later – please grab access to my free Travel Resource Library here . The library also includes other types of vacation spending money calculators for road trips, cruises, backpacking trips, and more!

How to save money on travel.

One thing that makes sticking with a trip budget easier is knowing how to lessen your travel costs. A few important tips:

1. Choose your destination wisely

Calculating travel expenses typically begins with choosing your travel destination - which is one of the most important factors in your travel budget. Different locations have varying costs of living, affecting the price of accommodations, food, and activities. Research typical costs in your chosen destination to establish a baseline for your budget.

2. Consider your travel dates

Before you calculate vacation costs, realize that the time of year can also significantly impact the cost of your trip. Off-peak or shoulder seasons often offer reduced costs for flights and accommodations, while the high season can be much more expensive.

3. Use tools to find flight deals

Along with following flight deal accounts on social media - like @TheFlightDeal on Twitter - you can use platforms like Going (formerly Scott's Cheap Flights) and FareDrop to find low fares and error fares to save big.

4. Book accommodation beyond hotels

For instance, you can snag free accommodation through CouchSurfing , where you'll sleep on local couches, and TrustedHousesitters . Just note that with the latter you'll be expected to do something in return, such as housesit or pet sit.

Additionally, hostels offer affordable accommodation, and many even feature private rooms. You can peruse the Hostelworld website to quickly find great options.

5. Travel like a local

While a vacation mindset tends to lead to overspending, living in your destination like a local means being more savvy with your finances by taking public transportation, eating at non-touristy restaurants, or even cooking your own meals if you book a place with its own kitchen through a site like VRBO . This can really help you keep food costs down.

6. Get savvy with travel credit cards

First off, you'll definitely want to get a credit card that doesn't charge foreign transaction fees. From there, you'll also want to consider whether you want a card with no annual fee, or if an annual fee makes sense for the additional travel perks - such as miles and points that you can redeem for free travel.

These strategies can bring your totals in the vacation budget calculator down quite a bit.

7. Book early

In general, booking airline tickets and hotels in advance can significantly affect your spending. You'll typically pay a lot more when leaving these big expenses until last minute.

8. Compare your rental car options

vacation travel cost

9. Research airport transfers

Instead of simply arriving at the airport and hopping into a taxi, do your research to see what is the best option for getting to your hotel. While typically public transportation is the most budget-friendly, it's wise to factor in how long the trip will take and if you'll need to switch bus/train lines. In some cases, it'll make more sense to take a car or book an airport transfer even if it costs a bit more.

Final Thoughts On Using A Travel Budget Calculator

Using a calculator to budget for travel can help you create an intentional budget and stick with it.

That being said, it's important to remember that the goal is not just to save money, but to make the most of your trip within your financial means.

Travel can be enjoyed at any budget level, so focus on creating memorable experiences rather than feeling obligated to do everything.

At the very least, you'll learn skills for keeping your total cost down so you can better plan ahead for your next trip!

A vacation budget helps you set parameters and expectations to not come home with an unwanted souvenir: debt. Transportation, lodging, food, and entertainment represent just a few of the costs incurred during a vacation. Statistics on the average cost for each category can give you a ballpark estimate to help you start planning a trip. Still, it’s important to remember that vacations are highly variable. The actual cost of a holiday is affected by numerous factors, such as the number of people traveling, the time of year, the distance traveled, and the destination itself.

There are also hidden fees to consider, so it’s wise to add a bit of padding to your final budget. Also, with the COVID-19 pandemic causing disruptions at a moment’s notice, it may be beneficial to purchase travel insurance for your 2021 vacation.

You’ll also need to keep a close eye on prices that fluctuate significantly according to supply and demand, like transportation and lodging costs. When the pandemic began, prices fell significantly due to widespread travel restrictions and social distancing guidelines. For example, the price of airline tickets dropped by  nearly 16%  in 2020. Now that COVID-19 immunization rates have increased and travel restrictions are lifting, travel demand is expected to surge in 2021. Expect prices for transportation, lodging, and finite-capacity activities to grow as a result.

What is the “average” vacation?

As of 2019, about  40%  of American families plan at least one vacation per year. Sixty-eight percent of those trips occur in the summer, but domestic tourism remains popular from  April through October . Due to increased demand, transportation and lodging costs increase during this time.

According to data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Consumer Expenditure Survey , an average four-day domestic vacation costs $581, or $144 per day. Transportation represents 38.5% of the total cost of an average vacation, food and entertainment represent 35.6%, and lodging represents 25.8%. For a 12-day international holiday, the average American spends a total of $3,251, or $271 per day. In this scenario, transportation represents 53.9% of the total cost, food and entertainment represent 25%, and lodging represents 21%.

Other sources,  Credit Donkey , suggest that Americans spend $1,145 per person for the average vacation. While the results of a  Bankrate  survey say that Americans plan to spend over $1,900 on their vacations.

The Baby Boomer generation spends about $6,600 on vacations each year, on average. Gen X-ers spend about $5,400, and Millennials spend an average of $4,400. According to Travel Agent Central , all in all, the average American spends nearly $2,000 on summer vacations in particular. In 2021, most Americans plan to spend about  $737  on their first post-pandemic trip, which will likely be spent visiting family and friends.

Not everyone can afford to travel, but that doesn’t stop some from going on vacation anyway. A  2019 Vrbo survey  found that 37% of millennials were willing to go into debt to travel, whereas just 27% of Gen X-ers and 15% of Baby Boomers said the same.

Pie Chart Dash Board

Vacation transportation costs

Simply getting to and from your destination can represent nearly 40% of your vacation’s total expense. You’ll also need to factor in the cost of traveling from the airport, bus station, or train station to your lodging. If you want to hire a taxi, research the destination city’s  typical fare charges .

AAA found that about 53% of American families plan a road trip each year, so travel expenses boil down to gas prices, tolls, and any car maintenance that you perform before hitting the road. But even if you fly to your destination, you might want a car to get around. Kayak estimates that it costs an average of $52 per day to rent a car in the U.S.

Train travel in the U.S. can cost as little as  $7 per ticket  to as much as $348, with the average train ticket costing $120. Rail travel is more prevalent in Europe, and  prices depend  on the length of the trip.

The price of bus tickets also depends on the length of the trip. They average  $83  but can cost as much as $425. If you need to hop on a public bus in your destination city, fares are usually around $1.

In 2020, the average cost of a round-trip domestic flight was  $302 , whereas the average international plane ticket cost  $1368 . These baseline prices do not include baggage fees or even the cost of parking your car at the airport, which can increase your overall travel costs.

Cruise fare averages about  $160 to $220  per person, per day. However, Tanner Callais of  Cruzely.com  points out that the pandemic has changed the balance of supply and demand within the cruising industry, which will likely drive prices toward the higher end of that spectrum.

“During the pandemic, cruise lines have taken the opportunity to scrap older ships,” Callais explains. In addition, “cruise lines have said they plan to return in a staggered approach, with only a few ships at a time and likely with limited capacity to encourage social distancing.” From Callais’ perspective, “The result is likely higher prices until more capacity is added.”

Vacation lodging costs

The typical single-occupancy hotel room in America costs  $103  per night. A standard double-occupancy hotel room costs exactly twice that amount: $206. Prices vary in every city and. For example, an  average hotel room  in Las Vegas costs $127 per night, but the average hotel room in New York City costs $258 per night. Hotel room costs also fluctuate based on consumer demand, so you can expect them to be more expensive during the most popular vacation months and on Fridays and Saturdays.

In comparison, the  average AirBnB price  in the U.S. is $171 per night as of 2020. However, depending on prices in your destination city, you might end up with a great deal by choosing AirBnB or Vrbo instead of a hotel. For example, the average AirBnB for New York City is $113 per night, but in Las Vegas, AirBnBs cost an average of $164 per night.

Don’t need any bells and whistles? More affordable options include motels ( $45 to $100  per night) and, in certain cities, hostel dorm rooms ( $25 – $40  per night).

If you want to stay in your RV, you’ll still need to factor in campground fees so you can enjoy electricity and plumbing during your vacation. Campground fees in the U.S. range from about  $25 to $80  per night.

International hotel costs also vary significantly from city to city. South American hotels are among the most affordable, with the average Bogotá hotel charging just  $47 per night . At the other end of the spectrum is Zurich, where the average hotel costs $255 per night.

Food and entertainment costs

What you do during your vacation also affects your budget. According to a  2014 survey , shopping is the most popular vacation activity among U.S. travelers, with 54% of respondents saying they shop while on vacation. Of course, this activity inherently costs money and can quickly eat into your budget if you’re not careful. Plan in advance how much money you’re willing to spend on souvenirs and the kind of items you’re interested in buying (such as t-shirts, trinkets, local artwork, etc.) to help you avoid spontaneous spending.

Swimming and watersports were the next-most popular activity on the survey. Most summertime destinations have public beaches, but they can get crowded during peak season. You can pay to stay at a resort with a private beach for a quieter, less crowded experience. Such an option can cost anywhere from  $144 to over $2,000 per night . And if you want to do anything other than swim, budget for equipment rental fees. For example, you can expect to pay around  $500  to rent a jet ski for the day, up to  $95  for a windsurfing session, and between  $25 and $60  to rent a kayak.

Tours  remain popular vacation activities for about  46% to 49%  of U.S. travelers and can include walking, biking, driving, or even hopping on-and-off a bus. Although you can take yourself on a walking tour for free, hiring a guide enhances the experience by providing historical context for everything you see. According to Jacquie Whitt, a tour operator with  Adios Adventure Travel , travelers should expect guided tours and activities to be private affairs thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic. While this “will increase costs for solo travelers more than families,” Whitt explains that “both solo travelers and small groups benefit from lots of individual attention, bringing more value to the dollars they spend.”

According to the  U.S. Travel Association , fine dining is the fourth most popular vacation activity among domestic travelers, behind visiting relatives, shopping, and visiting friends. Costs vary from destination to destination and from restaurant to restaurant. Plan ahead by looking up a few local restaurants and evaluating their prices. Do the same for street food vendors, if applicable. Expect to spend  $24 to $40  (or more) per person on food, excluding snacks, alcoholic beverages, and tips.

Budgeting tips that can save you more money on a vacation this year

Save money on vacation by planning your full itinerary in advance — right down to the snacks — and then adding a buffer of $100-$200 for surprise expenses. Don’t forget about taxes and gratuities when creating your budget. Try to avoid spontaneity while on your vacation, unless it’s to enjoy a free experience, but carry at least $20 with you at all times.

Not sure where to go? Yulia Saf of  MissTourist.com  advises tourists to save money by sticking to regional trips rather than cross-country or international excursions. “The new way of traveling on a budget from here on out is regional trips,” which “do not require you to fly or book a travel company.” Saf recommends “glamping, private cabins, or staycation units located outside busy cities” as budget-friendly leisure travel options.

Saving money on transportation costs

The best way to save money on transportation costs is to avoid peak travel times. Demand is low during January, February, and March because there are no major holidays or school breaks during those months. As a result, you’ll pay less for everything from  plane tickets  to  cruise fares  and even  train tickets .

Sometimes flying ends up being cheaper than driving and vice versa. Use a  drive-or-fly calculator  to help you discover the most affordable option.

If you plan to fly, departing and arriving during the middle of the week will save you money, with  Tuesday  generally considered the cheapest day to fly. Most travelers prefer the convenience of mid-morning or afternoon flights, so flights that depart at the crack of dawn or in the evening tend to offer the cheapest rates.

Knowing when to buy your tickets can also lead to savings. For domestic flights, book about two to three months in advance. For international flights, book five to eight months ahead for the best deals. Plane and cruise ticket prices also fluctuate based on the day of the week and even the time of day that you look at them. It’s worth carving out some free time in the middle of the week — especially Thursdays for international flights — at a time when everyone else is busy (think mid-morning or early afternoon) to scout out prices and officially book your trip. Download an app like Priceline, Hopper, or Kiwi to help you monitor fluctuating prices.

Saving money on lodging costs

Hotel prices also vary based on the time of year and day of the week, and “peak season” differs in every destination. For example, warm beaches remain popular in winter, as do ski resorts. Festivals and other significant events can also cause a surge in lodging demand in a particular city. Research your destination ahead of time to discover when tourism slows down, as you’ll be able to nab the cheapest hotel rates for this period.

The cheapest day for hotel check-ins is usually  Sunday  when most people check out and leave the hotel empty. If you don’t mind taking a gamble, book your hotel room 24 to 48 hours in advance. You can get cheap last-minute deals by filling a room after someone else cancels during their 24-48 hour grace period. Otherwise, book at least one month in advance, especially for popular destinations.

Saving with rewards cards

Around  26% of travelers  say they will use a rewards credit card to save money on an upcoming trip. If you’re not already part of that statistic, start learning more about travel rewards. Credit card rewards from the top airline cards or best hotel cards can be earned on everyday purchases and used to provide real cash value or to earn fun upgrades and perks, like a better seat on your flight. With the right card, your out-of-pocket vacation costs can be significantly reduced.

Bottom line

There are lots of moving parts when it comes to planning a vacation. While budgeting for your next trip may not be a simple task, it can help you avoid debt. So, try and factor in the variety of costs you’ll incur while on the road, like transportation, lodging, food, and entertainment. A ballpark estimate is a great starting point. And don’t forget, there are several fantastic travel rewards cards that you can use to help offset the costs of your next getaway.

Domestic leisure travel accounted for 2 million trips and $837 billion spent in the U.S. economy in 2022, meaning that it has largely returned to pre-pandemic levels even when adjusted for inflation. The amount that your vacation costs will vary drastically depending on the location, time spent on vacation and your own specific spending habits.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics regularly tracks consumer expenditures, including travel. Here are the 2022 numbers for out-of-town trip expenditures:

Vacation Travel Costs Explained

There are many different categories that make up the average cost of a vacation.

Transportation

One of the biggest vacation expenses is the total transportation cost, including airfare, rental cars and other options like buses and trains. How you get to your vacation destination will have a big impact on the total cost of your travel. If you’re booking airfare during peak travel time, your transportation costs might be way higher than if you are road tripping in the family minivan. If you're trying to vacation on a budget, be extra careful about your transportation costs as they often make up the bulk of your vacation costs.

The cost of accommodations for travelers (including hotels, Airbnbs, vacation rentals, hostels and other types of lodging) is another large part of overall vacation and travel costs. With the rising popularity of Airbnb and other vacation rentals, families have more options for lodging on vacation. Staying at a vacation rental may allow you to save money by cooking meals at your vacation rental. On the other hand, many hotels offer complimentary breakfast as part of your room rate and generally don't charge additional cleaning fees. Compare these options to see which may save you money if you are planning a family vacation.

Food And Drink

The cost of food and drink on vacation is a category people might not factor in thoroughly enough. You might be shocked by how much you spend in a day if you're not properly prepared. As we discussed in the previous section, depending on the type of lodging you are staying at, you may be able to save money by buying groceries and cooking them in your condo or vacation rental, instead of eating out for every meal. This might mean that you can save money overall on your vacation, even if it costs more to book a vacation rental instead of a hotel room.

Entertainment

Entertainment can be a big part of your vacation as well, depending on where you go and what you’re planning on doing. After all, part of the reason many people go on vacation is for entertainment. It's important to understand as well that there can be a wide range of costs for entertainment, since there is a big difference in cost between spending your vacation relaxing on the beach and taking the family to Disney World.

Put your savings on autopilot

5 tips for creating a vacation budget.

Pretty much everyone wants to save money on vacation , and the first step is to create a personalized vacation budget. It can be very easy to overspend on vacation without a budget, so these tips can help you create your vacation budget and stick to it.

1. Determine Your Overall Budget

The first thing to do is understand what you are comfortable spending on all aspects of your vacation combined. Knowing your overall budget can help you build a plan to save up for it. The 50/30/20 rule and cash stuffing are two popular strategies to help you set up an overall budget, where travel and vacation fits in with your other expenses. Opening a travel credit card can be another way to help defray vacation costs.

2. Consider Setting Up A Vacation Fund

Creating a vacation fund in a dedicated savings account can be helpful because money is set aside specifically for the trip each week or month. If you put $50 each week into a high-yield savings account , you would have over $2,600 by the end of a year, plus any interest that you would have earned on your balance. This can be a low-stress way to save money for your vacation.

3. Begin Planning Early

Laying out and sticking to a budget will be easier when some aspects of the vacation are booked and paid for in advance. Planning and booking some parts of your vacation ahead of time can help spread out expenses over time, instead of having the total cost of a vacation due over a week or two. Additionally, some entertainment and other vacation expenses may end up being cheaper if you book them months in advance, rather than waiting until the last minute.

4. Research Your Destination

Another thing that can help in saving money on travel is looking into regional prices of things like gas, food and entertainment in the area you’re planning to vacation in. This can be important since costs in different areas of the country (or world) can vary wildly, and may be drastically different from what you’re used to. Doing a bit of research into your destination can help you plan your budget and get used to the expenses you're likely to encounter.

5. Give Yourself Wiggle Room

Remember that a budget should be treated as more of a guideline than a hard and fast number. This is especially true on a vacation, so it's important to have a bit of a cushion in a vacation budget for unexpected expenses or costs that you may not have considered prior to starting your vacation. Remember that you're on vacation to have fun, so while you don't want to go crazy and blow up your budget, you also shouldn't make yourself miserable on vacation because of an unexpected expense.

Consider giving yourself extra money in your vacation budget for things you might not have thought about, including:

  • Hotel resort fees not included in the daily room rate
  • Foreign transaction fees (if you're traveling out of the country)
  • Parking and valet tips
  • Spontaneous adventures
  • Additional costs due to weather or other delays

6. Use A Budgeting App

Many budgeting apps offer tools and features that help you make planning for a vacation easier. This includes an easy way to monitor progress on spending and savings goals. The Rocket Money SM  app allows for custom budget categories and allows tracking across multiple savings accounts. Consider downloading a budgeting app to help you plan for vacation costs along with your other monthly expenses.

If you're getting ready for a vacation, set up an overall budget, plan early and use a budgeting app to help keep your overall costs down.

Average Vacation Cost – US & International

' src=

About 69% of employed and 55% of unemployed Americans have taken a vacation. In 2019, before the COVID-10 pandemic disrupted the world, 52% of Americans were planning to travel during the summer months. To plan holiday spending successfully, it’s essential to know the average vacation cost for domestic and international trips. How much to put aside for flights, food, and accommodation is just one part of the calculations. There are also lots of factors that can seriously impact your total vacation costs, so scroll down to find out all there is to know about it.

What Is the Average Vacation Cost ?

Americans from different regions spend different average amounts vacationing every year. Those in the West fork out about $677.78 for vacations at home and $3,805.10 to travel abroad, while those from the Northeast have an annual vacation budget of $438.98 for domestic trips and 2,817.38 for international travels. The average spending on holidays for those living in the South is $$564.51 for travelling locally and $3,169.21 for travelling abroad, while Midwesterners should budget $629.68 for domestic and $3,535.09 for international holidays.

Still, these figures don’t tell us much. The length, destination, and transportation are among the factors that impact the average cost of vacation stays and trips. After all, the average cost of a Sandals vacation can’t compare to the expenditures of staying at a hostel.

Below, let’s go over the average cost of taking a 4-night trip within the States.

Average expenses for a 4-night domestic trip:

  • Transportation – $224
  • Lodging – $150
  • Food/Alcohol – $155
  • Entertainment – $52
  • Total – $581
  • Cost per day – $144

Americans can have a 4-night domestic trip for less than $600 a person. These calculations represent the spending habits of an average US tourist. They can go up or down depending on whether you visit popular spots and book expensive hotels.

One thing is certain, though – the average vacation cost is much higher if you opt for an international trip. Find the approximate costs below.

Average expenses for a 12-night international trip:

  • Transportation – $1,755
  • Lodging – $683
  • Food/Alcohol – $520
  • Entertainment – $293
  • Total – $3,251
  • Cost per day – $271

If we divide these calculations to get the 4-night estimate, we get an average price of $1,083. Meaning, the overseas vacation costs to consider are nearly double those needed for domestic trips.

Cost of US Vacation by Budget Size

Planning your next vacation budget means deciding on the type of holiday you want. Budget-friendly options are often much lower than high-end experiences. BudgetYourTrip has provided valuable insights on the average vacation cost stateside by type.

Budget-friendly option :

  • Daily cost per person – $83
  • One week per person – $582
  • One week for a couple – $1,163
  • One month per person – $2,492
  • One month for a couple – $4,985

Regular option:

  • Daily cost per person – $223
  • One week per person – $1,558
  • One week for a couple – $3,116
  • One month per person – $6,677
  • One month for a couple – $13,353

High-end option:

  • Daily cost per person – $633
  • One week per person – $4,434
  • One week for a couple – $8,869
  • One month per person – $19,004
  • One month for a couple – $38,009

As you can see, the high-end daily vacation cost per person is a lot more than the budget-friendly option. This just further proves the thesis that the average cost of a vacation is best represented by type. The average spent by budget travelers is helpful for other tourists seeking the same experience. On a similar note, those looking for extravagance should base their expectation on the average costs among high-end travelers.

Average Holiday Cost by Expense Type

Then, what is the average price of food, accommodation, transportation, and entertainment? We have some averages below.

  • Accommodation hotel or hostel – $103
  • Transportation (taxi, local bus, subway, etc.) – $37
  • Intercity transportation – $152
  • Entertainment – $48
  • Tips and handouts – $12
  • Scams, mishaps, robberies – $94
  • Alcoholic beverages – $19
  • Water – $14

This average vacation cost breakdown is based on the BudgetYourTrip figures for a regular vacation in the USA for a solo traveler.

Average Cost of a Disney World Vacation

Disney World vacations are popular among solo travelers, couples, and, of course, families. Disney offers a unique experience, and people worldwide are willing to pay high prices for it. Before deciding to visit Disney World, however, it’s smart to plan your spending. There are several factors to consider. In any case, you’ll need about $4,600 for a Disney trip for a family of four.

Here are the estimated prices that affect the average cost of a vacation in American Disney World destinations. Below, you’ll find the average cost of a Disney vacation for 4 for a 4-day trip.

  • Flights – $1,200 (could be $800 if flying from the East Coast)
  • Accommodation – $440
  • Car rental, gas, parking – $365
  • Disney World tickets – $1,648
  • Food and beverage – $688
  • Random spending – $300
  • Total average cost of Disney vacation – $4,641

Again, this average Disney vacation cost can go up or down depending on your traveling habits. If you opt for luxurious hotels and get larger rental cars, you’ll spend more. Alternatively, you can go to hostels and prepare some of the meals yourself to save cash.

Another thing to consider is the park you’re visiting. The average Disney World vacation cost for 2 is much higher if you’re traveling from the USA and to international parks. Flight and accommodation costs are usually higher this way. By contrast, if you’re lucky enough to live nearby some of the Disney World destinations, you can expect to spend much less than the average cost of a Disney vacation.

Average Cost of Disney World Ticket Price

As we’re talking about the Disney World experience’s average vacation cost, most of the spending goes to tickets. The average Disney World vacation for 4 calculations are based on the average ticket price of $109. Disney World, however, offers various ticket options to suit the needs of different travelers.

Below, find some popular ticket types that can affect the average cost of a Disney World vacation.

Park Hopper prices per ticket:

  • $65 for 1-day tickets
  • $75 for 2 to 3-day tickets
  • $85 for 4 to 10-day tickets

Park Hopper Plus prices per ticket:

  • $85 for 1-day tickets
  • $95 for 2 to 3-day tickets
  • $105 for 4 to 10-day tickets

Multi-day Disney World price per ticker:

  • 4-day ticket – $412 ($103 per day)
  • 10-day ticket – $520 ($52 per day)

If you go for the 10-day ticket, expect the average Disney World vacation cost to jump significantly. Staying longer will also result in higher food and accommodation costs.

Average Cost of Vacation in Europe

Europe has always been a top destination among travelers who want to explore fine cuisine, architecture, and historical sights. Visiting the Old Continent, however, doesn’t come cheap. The average cost of a European vacation of two weeks for a solo traveler is nearly $4,000. It’s fair to mention that the average vacation cost to Europe depends on the country or countries you plan to visit.

Below, we’ll go over standard averages on accommodation, transportation, and food. Take these with a grain of salt as most Balkan countries, for example, are much cheaper than top spots like Monaco or the French Riviera. These calculations further include an average hotel price of $150 a night. Yet, some budget-friendly hostels and hotels cost between $15-30 a night. Hence, travelers’ average vacation cost in Europe can go down if you’re willing to sacrifice comfort and luxury.

So, how much does the average person spend on vacation in Europe? The figures apply to a two-week trip and mid-range economy flights.

  • Flights – $650
  • Accommodation – $1,950
  • Car rental, gas, parking – $400
  • Attractions – $200
  • Food and beverage – $560
  • Random spending – $200
  • Total – $3,960

Where you fly to, the type of accommodation, and where you eat matter. All these affect the average vacation cost for one person for travelers in Europe. Using a low-cost airline like Wizz Air instead of Lufthansa, for instance, can save you hundreds of dollars. Europe is also cheaper than the US in some regards, for example, EU destinations generally have cheaper healthcare costs by country , for example.

Naturally, destinations are essential too. Below, let’s analyze the vacation costs by country across European top tourist spots.

Italy has always been a favorite destination for people traveling to Europe. The country has cities perfect for all seasons, lots of activities, and historical monuments. Plus, it’s the home of pizza, and that accounts for something.

Greece Vacation Costs

  • One week per person – $2,605

One of the most popular spots in Greece is Santorini. Santorini is among the Cyclades Islands, and it’s known for its volcanic beaches. Another thing Santorini’s known for? Being pricey. The Santorini average vacation cost is $132 per person per day and $3,962 per person per month.

Croatia Vacation Costs

Croatia has always been popular among travelers coming to Europe. The destination, however, became even more famous after the mega-popular Game of Thrones TV show used Dubrovnik as one of its filming locations. Vacation costs in Croatia have been on the rise ever since. Still, this Balkan country is cheaper than other favorite EU spots like Italy and France.

  • Daily cost per person – $37

Opting for a luxurious experience can boost the average Hawaiian vacation cost as such accommodations are priced at $800 a night. The same report states that people should expect to spend about $100 on food per person per day. So, the average cost of a Hawaiian vacation for 2 for a week is about $1,400 for food only.

Other aspects that affect the average vacation cost include local transportation, entertainment, and water. Expect to spend an average of $29, $31, and $12 on these.

Average Cost of an Exotic Vacation

Americans love visiting exotic destinations with crystal-clear waters, unique cultures, and unusual experiences. While living in those countries is much cheaper than paying your bills in the US, vacationing there doesn’t come cheap. Especially not if you choose luxurious travel packages.

Before we can figure out what you need to save, we need to know, how much does the average vacation cost ?

In this article:

How Much Does an Average Vacation Really Cost?

I’m using my own experience with vacation costs to get a basic idea of what the average vacation cost is for a family. Of course, these numbers are just averages to help you with your planning. I will say that in the past year, vacation costs have skyrocketed

I’ve researched the average cost for most standard vacation expenses. These numbers can easily be used to calculate the vacation cost for one person or a couple, but for a family of four, the average cost of vacation will be between $4,100 and $5,100.

Wondering “how do I create a vacation budget?” Use the calculator at the bottom of this post as a personal vacation cost estimator based on your family size and destination. And print off my vacation budget planner to keep track of your estimates.

How Much Does the Average Person Spend on a Vacation?

An estimate of what the average person spends on vacation is approximately $350 per day plus transportation costs.

This is based on spending $200-$300 a night on your accommodations and $75 a day on meals. For meals, I’m estimating $15 for breakfast, $25 for lunch, $30 for dinner, plus $5 for a snack.

Of course, this is just an estimate! Personally, I think $200 a night for accommodations is low, but it will depend on the destination and what type of hotel you like. Based on my vacations I’d estimate spending $250-$350 per night in a hotel. Especially lately! I recently saw rates for basic chain hotels hitting $600 a night in New York City in December.

Traveling during a peak holiday or event? Expect your hotel costs to be one of the biggest expenses. A friend recently paid $400 for a Residence Inn off the highway for Christmas Eve. Hotel costs are no joke in 2023, but many are starting to see the prices come back down from the 2021 highs.

The average person will spend about  $1800-$2500  on a one week vacation. That’s estimating $210-$310 a day for hotel and food, and just under $400 for airfare. That doesn’t include car expenses or attraction tickets and tours.

And be sure to read my best tips for how to save for vacation !

How Much Cash Should You Carry on Vacation?

woman in grey sweater holding 100 dollar bils

In these days of credit cards, I’ll be the first to admit that I forget about carrying cash. You do want to have cash on hand for vacation. In my experience, you should estimate carrying about $25 a day in cash.

Again, this will vary based on your destination and what activities you have planned. It’s also a good idea to carry a variety of bills. You’ll need some lower denominations for tipping valets, housekeepers, and/or bellmen.

You’ll need to do some research in advance to find out how widely credit cards are accepted at your destination. For most places in the US, credit cards are widely accepted and cash will mainly be used for tipping hotel staff and tour guides.

You might need cash for some smaller shopping spots, like food carts or farmers’ markets. You could also need to have cash on hand for taxis as some will offer you a deal to pay in cash instead of credit.

You’ll also want to determine how easy it will be for you to get more cash while on vacation. Are you traveling to a destination that has ATMs that partner with your bank?

Or perhaps you want to get a no-fee ATM bank account like SoFi to save on ATM fees while traveling abroad. Be sure you know your ATM pin code and if chips are required.

Also, make sure you’ve notified your bank of your travel plans as part of your vacation preparation , although more and more banks no longer freeze cards when used out of the country.

The Complete List of Typical Travel Expenses

When it comes to planning for your vacation, here are the typical travel expenses you can expect.

  • Transportation (airfare, gas, shuttles, taxis, parking, etc)
  • Accommodations (hotels, home rentals, etc)
  • Dining (meals, beverages, snacks)
  • Activities (attraction tickets, tours, etc)
  • Shopping (souvenirs, boutiques, etc)

Average Transportation Costs: How will you travel there & how will get around once you’ve arrived at your destination?

This can be one of the largest expenses for a vacation. Driving can be a great way to keep costs low. Of course, driving will take you longer which means less time at your destination. You’ll need to decide whether flying or driving is best based on your distance, budget, and timeline.

How Much Does a Plane Ticket Cost?

$397 pp / $1,588 for a family of four (domestic)

These prices will be all over the board. According to the Dept of Transportation , the average cost of a domestic (US) plane ticket is about $397.

International airfare is going to vary greatly based on your outbound city. You can often find international deals from major coastal hubs that will get you an international ticket for $500-$800. Consider subscribing to Scott’s Cheap Flights if you’re flexible on where you want to go and just want to get a deal!

You can also consider credit card points to help lower your transportation costs.

Driving Instead of Flying to Save Money

$3.29 per gallon of gas

If you do choose to drive instead of flying, AAA has the current gas price averaged at $3.29. Keep in mind that the west coast will be higher, and many larger cities will have higher gas prices.

To calculate your gas costs use this formula: total distance of your trip and divide it by your miles per gallon to get the number of gallons of gas you will need on your trip. Then multiply that number by the current price of gas ($3.29), and the result is your estimated cost of gas.

(Distance / MPG) x Gas Gallon Price = Cost of Gas

Rental Car / Rideshare? What is More Cost-Effective?

$60 per day / $420 / week

This can be an easy expense to cut if you plan a trip to a walkable city or are driving to your destination. However, even the best cities will often require you to get to and from the airport.

And, if you’re traveling to somewhere like Oahu or Southern California, you’ll likely want to have your own car for exploring.

Car rental costs have skyrocketed lately, so it is something to research. There are so many factors to determine this expense, but based on my experience, for 2023 I’d calculate $60 a day. Rideshares can save you money if you’re mainly using them for airport runs or only a trip or two.

However, rideshares don’t always work well for families because of the luggage considerations to and from the airport and because of car seats. Families might be better off renting a car. But then keep in mind you’ll need to pay for gas and parking when renting.

Parking / Shuttles Add-on Additional Fees

If you’ll be parking at the airport for your flight, don’t forget to add that expense to your vacation cost planning. And if you’re driving or renting a car, be sure to check to see if your hotel charges parking fees.

In large cities parking fees can be substantial. For example, in downtown Seattle, many hotels charge $50+ a night for parking.

The Average Price Range for Hotel Accommodation Vary Depending on Your Needs

$250 per night / $1,750 for a week

There are two primary values for this expense, your nightly rate, and the hotel taxes & fees. According to the Business Travel Index, the cost of a hotel room in NYC, San Francisco, and Austin are $393, $387, and $215 respectively. These prices include taxes and fees which are typically around 10%-15%.

According to a Hotel Management report, hotel room rates were up 14% in April of 2022 compared to April of 2022. They report that the average daily rate was $149.90 per night. Based on my own experience, this is low for most tourist destinations for 3* properties, so keep that in mind.

hotel lobby with marble and wood

For our calculations, we’ll assume you can find a deal and score a room for $250 a night. You can also consider a home rental, which can often cost less, but note that there have been a lot of bad reports lately about the cost and cancellations of Airbnb rentals.

Don’t forget to budget for any daily resort fees and for tipping hotel staff when you’re planning your hotel costs.

How Much to Budget for Food on Vacation?

$75 per day per person

We all know that one of the big perks of a vacation is the food. Not only do we get to try new restaurants and foods, but we also don’t have to do the dishes!

To calculate the food costs you want to budget daily for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks. I estimate a daily food budget of $75 for an adult or $525 for a 1-week vacation.

These numbers are primarily based on table service meals. You can certainly find less expensive dining options in almost any city. And you can also find many restaurants that will cost much more.

Families with young kids can save a bit with kids’ meals, so for a family of four, I’d budget $1610 for a week. With daily budgets of $50 for breakfasts, $70 for lunches, $90 for dinners, and $20 for snacks, for a total daily food budget of $230.

Now that I have two teens, we have to budget as if we’re four adults, so we have a daily food budget of $300 for our family of four or $2100 for a week.

You can seriously shave some of these expenses down if you stay at a hotel with a free breakfast or if you make some of your meals in a rental or hotel kitchen.

  • Breakfast = $15 pp / $105 for the week per person
  • Lunch = $25 pp / $175 for the week per person
  • Dinner = $30 pp / $210 for the week per person
  • Snacks = $5 pp / $40 for the week per person

Total = $75 per person per day / $525 per person for one week of vacation

Beer, Wine, and Cocktails

If you enjoy alcoholic drinks while on vacation, be sure to increase your dinner budget (and perhaps lunch, too) to allow for drinks. They’ll run you anywhere from $9-$20 depending on your destination and your drink of choice.

If you plan to have one alcoholic drink a day while on vacation, your daily food budget goes from $75 to $90 per person. If you have two drinks per day then you’re looking at budgeting around $105 a day for food and drinks. Of course, if you’re a beer drinker, it will be a bit less as wine and cocktails typically cost more than a brew.

Calculate the Total Cost of All Activities Per Person Before Your Vacation Starts

Activity costs will all depend on what you plan on doing while on vacation. Some cities are filled with free things to do, while others are museum meccas where you’ll find plenty of admission ticket costs.

Assuming a one-week vacation, let’s estimate that you’ll visit three attractions that have an admission fee of $25. For a family of four, you’ll want to budget $300 for attractions. Of course, the cost of a Disneyland vacation will make this expense much larger than a standard city or national park vacation.

And if you like to get your kids souvenirs on vacation, be sure to allow perhaps another $50-$100 for shopping. I’ll admit that I also like to shop on vacation, so consider adding some shopping budget to your plans if you want to buy something special on your trip.

TIP: For major cities, you can save some serious money on attraction expenses by purchasing a CityPASS or Go City card. Both of these programs are a voucher system where you pay one price for a universal entrance ticket to various popular city attractions.

You can save about 40% on attractions in places like LA, NYC, San Diego, Orlando, Boston, and more! For example, the CityPASS Seattle can save you over 40% on entrance ticket costs for the Space Needle, Aquarium, MoPop Museum, Chihuly Glass Museum, and the Zoo. I’ve also used the NYC CityPASS to visit the Empire State Building and some of its famous museums.

Go City features many international city destinations like Dublin and Rome .

The Cost of Your Vacation Varies Depending on Several Factors

Hopefully, you can see that your vacation cost can vary depending on the choices you make. As stated above, flying typically costs more. However flying also saves you time. If you’re wanting to go across the country, flying could be the best option. And of course, if you’re planning an overseas trip, flying is your only option.

Your vacation costs will also depend on how many people are traveling. Transportation, food, and attraction costs can add up fast for a family, but sharing a hotel room means that one person might pay the same as a family of four for accommodations.

Home rentals are also very popular and can save you money, however, be mindful that service fees can make that nightly rate double in price. You’re also subject to paying more later on if your host decides to cancel your reservation with minimal notice.

Food is also a place you can try to save money and lower vacation expenses. If you find a hotel that offers free breakfast, that’s a great way to save money and get your day started quicker. You might also choose to pre-pack some snacks for your trip or stop by a local grocery store to save on restaurant costs.

Many of the suite-type hotel chains (like Homewood Suites or Residence Inn) will offer grocery delivery services for their guests. You can give them a shopping list and they’ll shop and stock your suite kitchen with your food. Making sandwiches in your room for lunch can save you hundreds. You can also use services like Instacart to deliver groceries to your hotel.

Lastly, keep in mind where you’re traveling to. Popular city destinations are going to likely be more expensive than smaller “suburb” type destinations. National Parks can be great value destinations, but hotel costs can be significant, and will book out early.

When you travel also can impact your vacation costs substantially. If school is on break, i.e. summer vacation, you can expect costs to be higher. If you can travel in the shoulder or off-season you can find better deals on airfare and hotels.

Let’s look at some common vacations and what the vacation costs might be:

How Much Does It Cost To Go To Florida?

This is probably one of the more popular destinations for families. And the cost of a trip to Florida will depend on whether you’re going for the beaches or theme parks.

Our family has taken quite a few theme park vacations to Florida. While it’s a huge state with so many great places to visit, most families are going in order to visit the Mouse. Be sure to read how much a Disney World vacation costs !

Let’s use our calculations above to help determine what to budget for a vacation to Florida.

  • Airfare = $397 per person based on the Bureau of Transportation
  • Rental Car = $60 per day + toll fees + parking
  • Hotel = $200 per night + resort fees
  • Tipping = $35
  • Food = $75 per adult per day (children $40)
  • Activities = $100 per person per day for theme parks

Based on averages, a one-week trip to Florida will cost about $2,800 for a solo traveler, $4,200 for a couple sharing a car and hotel, and approximately $5,600 for a family of four.

This will vary greatly depending on what your hotel costs are and how many attractions you plan to visit. If you’re staying at a nice hotel on the beach and lounging in the sand you’ll save on attraction costs but likely pay more for the hotel on the beach.

If you’re planning a theme park vacation, you’ll need to budget much more for activities. And if you’re planning to stay on-site at a Walt Disney World hotel, you might need to increase your hotel budget depending on what level of resort hotel you choose. But I scored a deal on our recent WDW Deluxe hotel vacation using Dave’s Vacation Rentals !

Average Cost European Vacation

Traveling to Europe is a bucket list trip for many. It does come with some special considerations for calculating the cost of a European vacation.

  • Airfare = $650 per person
  • Transportation (train or taxi) = $5-$10 per person per day
  • Hotel = $200 per night
  • Tipping = $1-2 per day
  • Food = $75 per adult per day
  • Activities = $25 per person per attraction

The biggest adjustment you’ll need to prepare for when saving for a European vacation is the airfare. Based on my experience you can expect to find European economy flights for between $550-$700 from major cities in the US. Of course, summer is the most popular time to visit Europe from the US, and airfare and hotel costs will be more during those months.

rooftop view from Park Bar in Lisbon Portugal

Many hotels can be found for around $150-$200 a night across Europe and you can definitely find cheaper deals. The biggest note here is for families, European hotels are often double occupancy only. If you’re a family of four or more you might need to budget for two hotel rooms depending on the city. Many families choose Airbnb rentals instead of hotels for this reason.

Food and activity costs will be fairly standard as to what you’d pay in the United States. Transportation costs might actually be a place to save money since so many European cities are walkable and have great rail systems. A rail pass can be an economical way to get around a large city.

Based on these averages I’d estimate a one-week European vacation to cost approximately $2,225 for one person, $3,400 for a couple, and $5,750 for a family of four (one hotel room).

Based on my experience, a trip to Portugal can be a great European destination without the high price tag you might find in other popular European cities.

Average Vacation Cost to Hawaii

  • Airfare = $525 per person
  • Rental Car = $75 per day + parking
  • Hotel = $275 per night + resort fees
  • Food = $90 per adult per day
  • Activities = $75 per person per attraction

Hawaii is another destination that people dream of visiting, and the vacation costs can add up fast. Airfare from the mainland can average in the $500 range, but it will vary depending on where you’re flying from and when you’re traveling. Winter escapes to Hawaii mean airfare is expensive during the cold months.

The cost of a rental car is probably one of the biggest surprises people don’t expect. The cost of a rental car in Hawaii will be about $75 per day. Then you’ll need to add on taxes and budget for parking if your resort has parking fees.

Of course, some may plan to just stay at their resort during their Hawaii vacation, but I think that’s a big mistake. Exploring the Hawaii Islands is easy and well worth it, there’s so much beauty to see. A car is necessary to check out the best things to do in Oahu .

palm trees in hawaii

Hotels are another place where your vacation expenses will add up. You can find hotels for under $200 but the average room rate will run around $275-$350 per night. Of course, if you want an ocean view, plan to spend closer to $400-$600 a night.

Food can also be more expensive in Hawaii, which was a surprise for Paul and me on our first visit to Maui. A simple breakfast can run you $20 and dinner can be close to $40. Plan a budget of $90 a day for meals, but don’t forget to add on if you plan to have alcoholic drinks, too.

You can definitely find condo rentals on most of the Hawaii Islands and can save money on meals by cooking in your rental, however, even grocery prices are much higher than we’re used to on the mainland.

Lastly, be sure to plan for any activities or tours you’ll want to do. Hawaii is popular for snorkeling trips, helicopter tours, and boat excursions. Those can all add up fast.

Based on these estimates, a one-week trip to Hawaii will cost $3,500 for one person, $4,750 for a couple, and about $7,000 for a family of four.

How Much Does a Luxury Vacation Cost?

Now that we’ve looked at all the basic costs and expenses, let’s take a peek at what splurging might look like.

If you want to upgrade from economy to first class for your flights, you should be prepared to pay about $1100 for a domestic first-class ticket and about $2500-$3000 for an international flight. This is one place where using travel points can help you upgrade your vacation without spending more money.

If you’re going for luxury, you’ll likely want to stay at a nice hotel. Expect to budget between $700-$1000 per night for luxury hotels. Keep in mind that you’ll likely need to be ready to tip more as well for the bellhop, valet, housekeeping, and concierge services. For one week you could be looking at spending about $5,000-$7,000 on a simple luxury hotel stay. Luxury hotels often have suites that can easily double this number.

For dining costs, you can also plan to splurge on some luxury restaurants. These prices can vary widely, however, I’d say you can expect to spend $75-$120 per person at a fine dining restaurant, plus beverages. A nice restaurant meal for two could cost about $250, but keep in mind that these meals should be treated as an experience, not a fuel-and-go opportunity.

Average International Vacation Cost

You can look at my example above for a European vacation cost to see that the largest expense for most international vacations is airfare. Plan to budget approximately $2,500 for one person, $3,700 for a couple, and $6,000 for a family of four for an international vacation. Of course, this will vary greatly depending on the destination and your hotel choices.

Average Cost of a Vacation for One

The average person will spend about $1800-$2500 on a one week vacation. That’s estimating $210-$310 a day for hotel and food, and just under $400 for airfare. That doesn’t include car expenses or attraction tickets and tours.

A person could save a substantial amount of money by renting a room through Airbnb or splitting a hotel stay with a friend. A solo traveler might also avoid table dining and just grab food to go which could save on food expenses.

Average Cost of a Vacation for 2

The cost of a vacation for a couple will be less than twice that of a solo traveler since you’ll be sharing the expenses for the hotel. However, you’ll still need to budget for airfare and food for each person. I estimate that a couple should budget about $2750 for a one-week trip.

Average Cost of a Vacation for a Family of 4

A one week vacation for a family of four will be approximately $4,500. This amount will vary greatly depending on where you choose to travel to and your hotel nightly rate.

Average Cost of a Vacation for a Family of 6

For larger families, you’re going to need to budget more money. Beyond the standard increases for airfare and food, you’re also looking at an increased cost for the hotel.

You might need to book two connecting hotel rooms, which will double the cost of the hotel. Or, you could book at a suite hotel that has rooms that accommodate six people. I’d estimate a one week vacation would cost a family of 6 about $6,000.

Vacation Budget Calculator

Simply plug in the numbers and you’ll have an accurate estimate of the total cost of your vacation

Here is a calculator that will help you figure out what a vacation will cost for your family. I’ve done some of the auto calculations for you but you’ll need to look up a few values to get an idea of your expenses.

For your transportation costs, determine what the cost is for your plane tickets either based on what you’ve already spent or using a travel search. If you’re taking a road trip, you could use your gas cost (use my formula at the beginning of this post) instead of inputting airfare expenses.

You can add in if you’re planning to rent a car, or leave it blank if you don’t have a car rental. And don’t forget to add in any parking costs either at the airport or at your hotel if you drive or rent a car.

For your hotel costs, input the number of nights. Then you’ll put in your nightly rate. And use the slider to add in the hotel tax which can add up quickly. Many destinations have an average hotel tax of between 12%-14%. I’ve also included a tipping section here, so add in what you might tip shuttle drivers, bellhops, and housekeepers. Also, include any resort fees your hotel might charge.

The food fields should be fairly easy to understand. Use my food section above to determine a daily budget for your family for each of your three meals and any snacks.

Lastly, determine what your activity ticket costs will be for everyone and add what you expect to spend on souvenirs.

You should be given a grand total vacation cost which will help you budget and save.

The Bottom Line: How Much Does a Good Vacation Cost?

I estimate that $5,000 is how much you should save for a one-week vacation for a family of four. Are you a bit surprised? I know I was when the numbers all came together.

As I’ve said before, this is just an estimate. I’m sure many families can travel for less, and there are plenty who travel for much more, too. The goal is to help you have an idea of the cost so that you won’t be surprised and stressed when the trip is over and the charges start piling in.

Although no two vacations are alike if you take the time to plan & budget you can take a cost-effective vacation that can surpass “average” in the fun department and come in below average in the cost department.

Honestly, I always assume $5000, especially when we go abroad. In the US, we will do it a bit cheaper, but mostly because we drive a lot of places.

This is so on point. When you think how much a coffee and lunch on the go can add up, you can soon save by taking a packed lunch. I also like the concept of ride share- we don’t have that here!

At A Glance

  • The U.S. is best visited during a series of several different trips. Because it is so large and difficult to travel around, you'll do better if you visit one region at a time. Some people choose to do a highlights tour and see New York, San Francisco and perhaps one national park. A better option is to pick one part of the country and explore it in more depth.
  • If you want to avoid renting a car, the best area to visit is the northeast. There are trains and buses that connect the major cities, so it is possible to travel around without renting a car or taking a flight. The larger cities in these areas also have decent public transportation systems so it's easy to travel within the city without a car as well.
  • One of the best seasons to visit this country is during the fall months. In many areas the leaves are changing color and the landscape is beautiful. Children are also back in school so the crowds are less and the prices are usually lower.
  • You'll find plenty of great beaches on both coasts. If you're hoping to see a dramatic and rocky coast line, surf in the largest waves, and enjoy urban beaches, then the west coast is your best option. If you're looking for more natural beaches, warmer water for swimming, and more traditional towns, then head to the east coast.
  • If you're hoping to visit any beaches then it is best if you avoid college spring break periods. These breaks usually fall between early March and late April and can be a busy and expensive time to be at the beach. Unless you specifically want to take part in the partying then your best option is to visit at a different time.

What Is the Average Cost of a Vacation?

Last Updated: January 11, 2023

How Much Does the Average Vacation Cost?

How much do vacations cost.

We all love traveling.

If we have the money, of course.

What is the average cost of a vacation?

Costs vary greatly depending on a lot of different factors — transportation, lodgings, restaurants, etc.

So, how much does a vacation cost?

In order to get a general idea of the costs associated with the average trip, we have compiled a list of some pretty fascinating stats for you:

1. A domestic one-week vacation for one person costs $1,573 on average.

(Source: Budget Your Trip)

This is the average vacation cost for one person for one week. It spans a wide range of staycations, from a short and frugal road trip to a plane journey.

If one person spends around $1,573, then the average vacation cost for a family of 4 would be close to $6,500.

Needless to say, the cost of plane tickets for all family members is steeper than the cost of a rented car. A camping trip will also cut down the expenses significantly compared to staying in a resort or a hotel.

The time you choose to travel also affects the price. Peak seasons are associated with higher costs for pretty much everything — flight tickets, accommodation, entertainment.

The average cost of a vacation for each generation also varies. A 2018 study reveals that gen Xers are more likely to overspend on vacation than baby boomers and millennials. Indeed, most statistics show those in the 41-56 age bracket spend the most on leisure trips.

As you can see, there are a lot of variables. So, take these average vacation costs with a grain of salt.

2. $20,000 is the baseline cost for a trip around the world for one person for one year.

(Source: AirTreks)

Is a round-the-world trip your lifelong dream?

For many, such a journey sounds out of reach. But in today’s modern era traveling around the world is more affordable than ever.

The general consensus from seasoned travelers is that a year on the road costs between $20,000 and $30,000. For mid-range to luxury accommodation choices, the cost would go from $40,000 to $50,000.

Isn’t that impossible, is it? You just need to stop dreaming and start planning! A vacation cost estimator can help you avoid exceeding your preset budget during the long journey.

3. The average price of a round-trip domestic flight is $261.

(Source: Bureau of Transportation Statistics)

The average US domestic airfare for the fourth quarter of 2020 represents a 6.3% increase from the previous three-month period.

The 2020 inflation-adjusted annual fare was $292 — the lowest since the Bureau of Transportation Statistics began collecting records in 1995. The figure was down 18.6% from the previous low of $359 in 2019.

Separate data from Statista shows that for low-cost airlines, the 2020 average domestic ticket price was just $98. So these carriers offer a good option for those with a tight annual vacation budget.

Air traffic plummeted by 95% in the first months of 2020, when the Covid-19 pandemic hit. With travel restrictions lifted, as much as 78% of people indicate plans to travel in 2021.

And as flight demand increases, so will prices. Let’s see what experts forecast!

4. Domestic airfare prices are expected to rise 4%-5% every month until summer 2021.

(Source: Hopper)

Prices for domestic travel are expected to gradually return to 2019 levels. The strongest increase of around 6% is set for late spring/summer.

So, if you’re planning on traveling in 2021, it may be good to research how much to budget for a vacation and book as soon as possible. In fact, according to estimates, the best time to buy a domestic ticket is around 70 days in advance.

5. The average price of a round-trip international flight is $786.

Transportation costs are said to constitute around 44% of the average budget for a vacation. However, the amount allocated to plane tickets from your budget for vacation depends on when you buy the tickets and which day of the week you are leaving. Weekend tickets are more expensive than weekday takeoffs.

How much you wait before buying also plays a role in the final price. When it comes to international flights, the best time to book varies based on region. According to CheapAir , you should buy your Europe plane tickets 160 days before departure. For a trip to Asia, you’ll want to book your flight 120 days in advance. And for the Caribbean, the sweet spot is 207 days prior to takeoff.

Yeah, you read that right.

No procrastinating allowed if you want to cut down your travel costs!

6. The cheapest international flight destination is The Dominican Republic.

(Source: SmartTraveler)

You can get to the Dominican Republic’s transparent waters and endless beaches by plane for as low as $77.

This tropical paradise used to be a popular vacation destination, but safety concerns have pushed many visitors away in recent years. Tragically, since 2018, at least 36 US tourists died in the Dominican Republic. These incidents made headlines and triggered investigations. The US State Department currently rates the Caribbean country as a “Level 2” destination, meaning visitors must “exercise increased caution”.

The slew of deaths has caused an 80% plunge in tourist numbers. The weaker demand has affected flight prices, making the Dominican Republic one of the most affordable destinations. But as you can see, how much to spend on your vacation is not the only consideration to make. Weigh the risks and always go thoroughly prepared.

Other exotic places that make it to the list of cheapest international destinations are the Maldives ($218), South Africa ($260), Helsinki ($208), Athens ($149), Buenos Aires ($270), Tel Aviv ($414), and Brisbane ($321).

7. The most expensive international flight costs $64,000.

(Source: Airport Spotting)

Ok, we’re talking about luxury here.

A one-way ticket from New York to Abu Dhabi with Etihad Airways Residence could break the vacation cost calculator.

Do you wonder what you get for this fortune? Well, you travel in a three-room apartment, including a private bathroom with a shower, lounge and a bedroom with a double bed. A personal butler will be at your disposal, while you can also enjoy a selected list of fine wines and middle-eastern dishes.

The flight on the Airbus A380 is pricey, but at least a ticket provides travel for two people sharing a suite.

8. Train tickets cost an average of $122.

(Source: Wanderu)

Families that can’t allocate a significant portion of their budget on vacation spending can look into domestic trips via trains or buses. Naturally, prices vary by route, carrier, and date. The average bus ticket costs between $20 and $50.

And while intercity train and bus tickets are considerably cheap, only 6% of travellers used these modes of transport in 2018. The majority of people travel domestically via planes, personal cars or rented cars.

9. The average hotel price in the US is $103.25 per night.

(Source: Statista)

The 2020 average cost reflects a decrease of over 21% on the previous year.

It’s no secret that besides transportation, another factor that can greatly influence the average vacation cost is accommodation. If you are planning on staying at a hotel, you can expect to pay the steepest price. To cut down your vacation expenses, you can look for alternative lodging. Booking an Airbnb or a hostel or even couchsurfing will surely save money.

In fact, according to the 2018 Business Travel Spend Report done by Rocketrip, business travelers saved $110 on average per night by booking an Airbnb. By compromising luxury and dropping a hotel star class, they can save $54 on average. The least expensive accommodation is staying with friends and family. But that isn’t always a viable option.

So, in order to find out how much to budget for a vacation, you need to first decide on the mode of transportation and accommodation. These will be your highest expenses.

10. The average cost of food per day while traveling with your family is $132.

(Source: Credit Donkey)

The average cost of food for a four-member family while vacationing is around $130 per day. However, bear in mind that this amount doesn’t include alcohol, tips or even snacks. So you can expect to spend more.

To lower down the costs, you can look for accommodation that provides a meal or go grocery shopping for the duration of your trip. You can definitely have vacation meals on a budget if you aren’t set on eating out for each meal.

Yet, for the majority of travelers experiencing local cuisines is one of the best parts of the journey. If you value delicious food more than luxurious hotel rooms, you can look for more affordable accommodation to have more spending money for food and entertainment.

11. Travelers spend $293 on average for entertainment on international trips.

(Source: Value Penguin)

How much should a vacation cost after all of the basics have been covered? Well, on average travelers spend around $300 on international trips and $52 on domestic trips for entertainment. This includes tickets for sporting events or museum passes.

If you plan to visit many museums and attractions, you can research whether you can buy city passes, which will allow you to cut down these vacation costs. Or, if you want to be more spontaneous and not feel like you are vacationing on a schedule, you can skip planning to visit attractions entirely.

Sightseeing will cost you no money, though. You never know where you will end up by just walking around!

12. The average cost of a Disney vacation is $4,641 for a family of four.

(Source: Money We Have)

If you plan to take your family on a four-day trip to Disney World, be prepared to shell out a small fortune. The 2020 estimated amount is close to $5,000.

Let’s break down the vacation expenses. As you will be flying domestically, the average round-trip ticket is estimated to be $300, depending on the source. That said, it wouldn’t be hard to find a flight in the $200 range if you’re flying from the east coast. If we round the number up you will probably spend around $1,200 on four plane tickets.

If you’re staying at one of the Disney World hotels on-site, you can expect to pay up to $300 a night. But there are many hotels in the $100-$150 a night range near the theme park.

Tickets for the attractions will cost around $1,600. Then you need to take into account food, car rentals, parking, and any additional expenses you may have. So, if you are on a low budget, then Disney World shouldn’t be your next vacation destination and if it is, start saving now.

13. A week-long Hawaii vacation costs $1,882 on average.

As this is the estimated cost for one person, a couple can expect to spend close to $3,765 for a week in Hawaii.

Round-trip plane tickets between most US cities and Honolulu cost between $500 and $800 for economy class. The accommodation costs can vary anywhere between $50 to $500. Renting an Airbnb can lower your trip cost, whereas a luxury hotel can exceed $500. According to data from travelers, the average price for one person for accommodation in Hawaii is $165, while a standard double-occupancy hotel room costs $330 per night.

If you decide to rent a car, you will probably spend around $50. The parking fees range between $20 and $45. And you will also need to account for gas prices. On average, travelers spend $29 per day on local transportation in Hawaii.

You also need to consider setting around $60 for food aside. But that’s only if you stick to fast food or street offerings. Meal prices in sit-down restaurants in Hawaii are higher.

Those were the basic necessities.

Let’s say you go to Hawaii.

How much does the average trip to Hawaii cost once you take into account extra activities? If you add up the costs of island tours, sunset cruises, and water day park passes, you are looking at an extra $31 per person per day.

You can save some money by visiting during the low season , doing some free activities and not splurging a lot on food and luxury hotels.

14. The average cost of a European vacation is $3,960.

The amount you will spend on a vacation in Europe varies greatly.

Are you a backpacker who’s spending the night in a hostel? Or are you staying in a luxurious hotel and dining in high-end restaurants?

On average, your two-week vacation will cost you close to $4,000. Though we have to mention that backpackers will make do with significantly less. So, let’s break down the average cost of a vacation in Europe.

A round-trip flight ticket will cost $650 on average. Prices are highest at peak season and vice versa. You should also expect to spend around $400 on local transportation.

Accommodation costs $150 on average, so that’s close to $2,000 for 13 nights. However, you can spend the night in a hostel or rent an Airbnb for a fraction of that amount. If you book a bed in a hostel, you will pay a maximum of $50. So, booking cheaper accommodation is the best way to lower the average cost of a vacation in Europe.

You won’t need more than $1,000 for food, attractions, and other expenses. You don’t need tickets for some European attractions and for those you do, you won’t need to spend much. Food will cost you around $50 on average per day if you only dine in restaurants in the evenings. Fast food and street food is great if you are traveling on a budget.

Now, let’s sum up: How much does the average person spend on vacation in Europe? While the amount estimated is around $4,000, you can do your own calculations depending on which type of accommodation you prefer. Once you have summed up accommodation and transportation costs, you can add the food costs, various tickets and passes, ATM and currency conversion fees, and get a rough estimate that may or may not be in the same ballpark mentioned here.

Of course, you can always plan your vacation in one of the more affordable European countries .

While the average cost seems pricier for some people, it is important to note that not every trip costs a fortune. There are a lot of ways in which you can cut down your costs. For starters, you can track flight prices to get the best deal possible. Traveling during the low season and weekdays is in general cheaper than traveling in peak season and during weekends.

Another tip on how to budget a vacation is to look for more affordable accommodation. Three-star hotels, hostels, and Airbnbs are significantly cheaper than luxury hotels and resorts.

Lastly, eating out and a lot of other activities are optional. You can still have a great time sightseeing and visiting attractions which do not require you to pay an entrance fee.

Of course, the average cost of family vacation is higher than the average cost of single people. Hotels are more suitable for children, whereas hostels are popular among young people. Families also tend to rent cars more, rather than use public transportation.

All things considered, the amount you will spend depends on your preferences and budget. Though finally, the average cost of a vacation is around $1,200 per person.

Okay. End of calculations, we promise!

In the end, we do all love traveling. And now, thanks to our stats and tips you know how to both travel and save money!

The average cost of a vacation for a single person in the U.S. is $1,984 and $3,969 for a couple. If you’re traveling in a group of four, you can expect to pay upwards of $7,936 and up to $11,904 for a group of six.

Average vacation costs can vary significantly based on several factors, including your transportation methods, length of stay, number of people in your travel group, and the cost of food and entertainment—which we’ll break down in more detail below.

Average Cost of Transportation

average cost of transportation

Average Cost of Air Travel

The average cost of a domestic round-trip flight is down $32 compared to last year — averaging a total of $257. The cost of airfare varies depending on the airline, destination, day of the week, and the season.

For example, you can save an average of $90 if you book a midweek domestic flight. If you’re traveling around the holidays, you may see a spike in flight costs, with the average domestic round-trip flight costing around $400 during the holiday season.

Average Cost of Ground Travel

In addition to transportation to and from your vacation destination, you also need to account for getting around during your stay—whether you’re renting a car, booking a Boston charter bus or a Chicago charter bus , using rideshare services, or utilizing public transportation.

Of course, these costs can vary depending on your destination, where you’re staying, and what activities you’re planning. For example, if you’re traveling to a walkable city and your hotel or Airbnb is within walking distance of restaurants and other activities, you’ll likely save on transportation expenses.

The average cost of renting a car is $45 per day, with gas prices currently sitting at $3.47 per gallon. If you decide not to rent a car, utilizing rideshare services like Uber or Lyft can help you get around during your stay—averaging around $1 to $2 per mile. Local transportation like taxis, public buses, and subways are also great ways to get around, averaging around $46 per day.

When traveling in a large group or as a family, charter buses can be a great option for a road trip. On average, these types of buses can range from $1,200 to $1,500 per day or $3 to $5.50 per mile. At GOGO Charters, our minibus options can make long-distance trips a breeze—they’re complete with roomy seats, bathrooms, TVs, and plenty of space for your luggage.

Average Cost of Lodging

average cost of lodging on vacation

Average hotel cost

The average cost of a single hotel room is around $129 per night, while a double occupancy room averages $259 per night. You may end up paying more or less depending on where you stay.

For example, Marriott hotels have an average daily rate of $173 , while Hyatt charges around $267 per day.

For family-friendly hotels, you can expect to pay an average of $214 per night .

Average vacation rental cost

A vacation rental is a cost-effective option if you’re traveling in a group, and the per-night rate is significantly lower the longer you stay. The average nightly rate of an Airbnb for one night is $314 but drops to $213 per night for a seven-day stay, making the nightly rate for seven days 32% cheaper .

When looking at per-person costs, small Airbnbs that fit two people average $125 per person, while large Airbnbs that host six people cost around $60 per person.

Average Cost of Food and Drinks

daily costs of food and drinks per person

Food and dining experiences are a top budget priority during vacation—in fact, 86% of travelers are prioritizing local dining in their 2024 travel budgets.

The average daily cost of food per person while on vacation is $58, while the average cost per meal is $23. However, this comes with caveats depending on where you dine, what meal you’re eating, and if you’re dining with other people.

Whether you’re sipping a piña colada on the beach or enjoying a martini at your hotel bar, drinks are also something you want to budget for if that’s something you enjoy. On av

erage, you can expect to spend $27 a day on alcoholic beverages when traveling.

Average Cost of Entertainment

Average cost of entertainment on vacation

No vacation is complete without some fun and entertainment. Here’s a breakdown of some activities you might consider while on vacation and their average costs:

  • Amusement park average ticket cost: $27-$169
  • National park average cost: $7-$20 per person or $5-$35 per vehicle
  • Average concert cost: $252
  • Average cost of museums: $25-$30
  • Average cost of sporting events: $109/ticket

If you’re looking for ways to save, try buying tickets ahead of time or during off-peak months. For example, Disneyland tickets are much cheaper during non-holiday months and periods when school is in session. Aside from a price reduction, you can also enjoy a less crowded park during these times.

Budgeting Tips for Your Next Vacation

Vacation costs can add up quickly. If you’re looking for ways to cut costs, here are a few tips to help you plan a memorable vacation without breaking the bank.

  • Set your budget: In addition to necessities—airfare, lodging, and food—set aside some money for unexpected expenses. This will give you a cushion so you can have some leeway with your travel spending.
  • Book in advance: Planning and booking your trip at least four months in advance can lead to greater savings than booking one month out.
  • Fly during the week: Flying during the week can save you an average of $90 compared to catching a weekend flight.
  • Travel during off-seasons: Because demand is lower during off-peak travel seasons, you can save on travel expenses and enjoy a less crowded getaway by booking during these times.
  • Utilize travel rewards: Using a travel credit card for daily expenses can help you rack up travel rewards and points that to fund vacation costs like airfare and lodging.
  • Prepare your meals: Half of U.S. travelers cook meals to cut costs when traveling. Consider making some of your meals and limiting yourself to only dining out once per day.
  • Plan a staycation: If you want to experience a vacation but are looking for a less expensive and easier option, consider a staycation in your area or a neighboring city.
  • Travel with a group: Group travel is a great way to get the most bang for your buck since you can split costs. For example, booking an Airbnb with a group and splitting the costs is 33% cheaper than booking three hotel rooms.
  • Take advantage of free amenities: If you plan to stay at a hotel, try looking for one with free breakfast and a pool—a great way to save on food and entertainment costs.

How Much Does a Cruise Cost?

The average cost of a cruise varies by ship, destination, trip length and more. Use this guide to learn more about cruise costs.

With the rising cost of everything, including travel, cruise fares – some as low as $26 per person per night based on double occupancy – seem like an incredible bargain. And they certainly can be, but the fares you see advertised online often don't include extras like taxes, fees, port expenses, gratuities, shore excursions, specialty dining, alcoholic beverages, specialty coffees, room service fees and more.

Cruise pricing can be confusing with so many variables; unless you're sailing with a smaller luxury line that is all-inclusive , your bill on the day of disembarkation may be unexpected or even shocking. Small things like buying bottled water or renting noodles for floating in the ocean at a cruise line's private island can add up quickly. To help you plan better for a cruise vacation , U.S. News has broken down some of the costs and add-ons you need to take into consideration before booking your next getaway on the high seas.

How much does a one-week cruise cost?

A cruise can cost anywhere from about $171 per person for a four-night Bahamas cruise to up to $94,999 per person for a 154-night world cruise and anywhere in between. Cruise fares vary based on itinerary, number of nights, cabin type, amenities and cruise line. Here are a few examples of base cruise cost ranges on larger cruise lines for various regions:

  • A seven-night Caribbean cruise in November costs approximately $424 to $1,158 per person.
  • A seven-night Alaska cruise in May costs approximately $244 to $1,632 per person.
  • A seven-night Western Mediterranean cruise in June costs approximately $439 to $3,218 per person.
  • A seven-night Mexico cruise in January costs approximately $529 to $695 per person.
  • A seven-night Canada and New England cruise in October costs approximately $470 to $954 per person.

What's included in the base fare with a larger cruise line?

Aerial of family sitting on lounge chairs, being served drinks on a cruise ship

Mass-market cruise lines such as Royal Caribbean International , Norwegian Cruise Line , MSC Cruises and Carnival Cruise Line – and more upscale lines like Celebrity Cruises , Holland America Line , Cunard Line , Disney Cruise Line and Princess Cruises – advertise "starting from" base fares, which are for inside cabins. These are the least expensive staterooms on the ship, and they do not have windows. Staying in these accommodations still gives you access to all the complimentary dining venues, several types of nonalcoholic beverages (nonbottled water, iced tea, lemonade, juices, hot coffee and tea), the ship's pools, the gym, kids clubs and onboard entertainment.

If you want a room with a view – or a larger stateroom – consider booking an ocean view room with a porthole or window, or a cabin with a balcony or veranda. With these rooms, you'll have access to all the ship's included amenities and typically more spacious accommodations for the week. Of course, this option will come at a higher price point.

No matter which room category you choose, port expenses, taxes and fees are not included in the base fares, and they're automatically added to the cost of your cruise. The amount of these charges will depend on the length of your cruise and where you're sailing. Gratuities for the staff and crew are also additional.

What if you want more amenities and perks?

If you splurge on a suite or a higher room category, such as Celebrity's Concierge Class, you'll get perks like priority embarkation, a Welcome Aboard Concierge Class Lunch, complimentary sparkling wine and daily tastings (upon request), concierge service, invitations to exclusive destination seminars, pillow selection and more.

With Disney Cruise Line's Concierge Staterooms and Suites, guests have a dedicated concierge agent offering personalized assistance for pre-arrival planning for port adventures, dining reservations, other onboard activities and special requests. You'll also have priority check-in and boarding, complimentary Wi-Fi, access to a private lounge, and other perks.

You may opt to stay within an exclusive area of the ship, such as MSC Cruises' Yacht Club, Norwegian's The Haven or Celebrity's The Retreat. These high-end private retreats offer an all-inclusive experience with additional features, while still including access to all the entertainment, dining venues and more on board. The accommodations can cost hundreds more dollars per day, but you'll have an experience similar to sailing on a small luxury vessel.

For example, the MSC Yacht Club offers an intimate all-inclusive space within its larger ships. The private area is accessible with a key card and features luxurious suites, a dedicated concierge, 24-hour butler service, a private restaurant and lounge, a rooftop pool, and other amenities. There are also additional dining and snack options throughout the day at the pool and lounge.

You'll find similar amenities in Norwegian's and Celebrity's private retreats, including priority boarding and disembarkation, exclusive sun deck areas, and priority access when boarding tenders for going ashore.

What factors determine pricing?

Base pricing and the additional components vary greatly among the cruise lines, so you'll need to determine what your budget is for the trip – and what you can and can't live without when it comes to accommodations and amenities. Travelers may also find that one cruise line has a deal or promotion with reduced pricing that includes airfare, specialty dining, a beverage package, free Wi-Fi or other perks in the advertised rate, while another line isn't running any specials for a similar itinerary.

Voyages on older cruise ships tend to be less expensive, so if you're on a tight budget, consider a ship with fewer bells and whistles. If you're sailing on a short itinerary in the Bahamas and plan to lounge by the pool or on the beach all day, you may not be concerned about having high-tech onboard amenities, martini bars and several specialty restaurants.

Save the money to splurge on more expensive fares when you're planning to sail on longer voyages on larger and newer ships. You'll want several days at sea to enjoy the onboard amenities on some vessels, such as a three-level racetrack and a 10-story-tall slides on a new ship like Norwegian Prima or its new sister ship, Norwegian Viva, set to debut in summer 2023.

Another significant factor to consider is the time of year you want to travel. Better deals are available in the offseason, but the offseason varies depending on what part of the world you're traveling to. For example, May is a great time to find a deal in the Caribbean. The offseason – or shoulder season – in that market typically runs from May to November. However, keep in mind this period overlaps with hurricane season .

You also may be able to find last-minute deals in many other destinations if you're flexible. Working with a travel agent is an excellent way to learn of last-minute specials and cruise deals that offer add-ons like beverage packages, specialty dining inclusions, shore excursions and other perks. You can also check out the online specials that change frequently.

Solo travelers may pay more

Back of woman holding her hat, with her scarf flying in the wind, on a cruise ship

If you're traveling alone , you may also need to factor in a single supplement, which can add up to as much as 100% of the cruise fare. To save money, bring a friend so you can access the lower double occupancy fare or consider lines that feature rooms for solo travelers; select Royal Caribbean, Norwegian and Celebrity ships offer solo cabins.

These smaller accommodations – around 100 to 200 square feet in size – are priced and designed for solo travelers. Key card access to Norwegian's Studio Complex and Lounge is included with the line's solo cabins and offers a place to relax and mix and mingle with other cruisers. Other lines that offer solo cabins include Holland America, MSC and Virgin Voyages . While the price may not be as inexpensive as the double occupancy fare when traveling with someone else, these accommodations offer some savings over a typical solo fare.

Some lines often feature special deals on select sailings where the single supplement is waived or reduced. A knowledgeable travel agent specializing in cruises can assist in finding the best offers for solo travelers.

Kids cruise free promotions can help families save

Smiling woman holding laughing daughter on a cruise ship in the Norwegian fjords

If you're traveling with kids, many cruise lines – such as Holland America, MSC, Norwegian, Royal Caribbean, Disney and Princess – offer "kids sail free" promotions periodically throughout the year. You can also find discounted fares for the kids on select sailings. Regent Seven Seas Cruises has fares as low as $999 for children 17 and younger on a variety of select voyages whose regular fares are around $6,000 and up. This fare also includes unlimited shore excursions and all the benefits and perks of sailing with an all-inclusive luxury cruise line.

Food and beverage packages are another expense to consider

Table of breakfast overlooking the ocean

Once you determine your total cruise fare with the taxes, fees, port charges and gratuities, you'll need to budget for the additional expenses you'll have on the ship – and these extras can add up quickly. Meals at specialty dining venues , alcoholic drinks and other beverages may not be covered in the basic cruise fare. You'll also have to pay for room service on most ships.

You can purchase specialty dining, beverage and Wi-Fi packages before or during your cruise. These packages offer savings over purchasing everything individually – and it's best to buy them once you book your cruise, as they're typically cheaper to purchase before you board the ship. For an example of the savings, Royal Caribbean offers up to a 40% discount with a dining package. This package includes reduced pricing for children ages 6 to 12, while kids 5 and younger eat for free. The cruise line's unlimited dining package also offers discounts on bottles of wine.

In addition to specialty dining venues that charge a flat fee – usually between $30 to $50 – there are also restaurants that charge as much as $75 or more for dinner. Other venues feature a la carte menus with sushi, bar food and even steakhouses that price out individual courses. Some of these may not include gratuity, so that's another add-on. If you decide to dine at any of these spots – and they're not included in your package – you'll have to budget for them in the total cruise price. Enticing dessert items in the gelato and ice cream shops on some ships also come with a price, including Coco's and Dolce Gelato on Norwegian or MSC's Venchi.

There are endless options when considering beverage packages, too, so you need choose what fits best with your interests and budget. Some of the package options are only for nonalcoholic drinks like fountain sodas, sparkling waters and coffees, while premium or deluxe beverage packages cover beer, wine and cocktails, so they are more expensive. Depending on the cruise line, most premium packages will usually cover drinks up to $15, but many craft cocktails on cruise ships can be quite expensive, costing much more, especially if you request a call brand for the liquor. If you have the premium package and want to splurge on the fancy beverage, you'll have to pay the difference.

Other lines have packages that cover top-shelf beverages of up to $20 each and include wine, large bottles of water and soda, and other perks. You'll need to budget around $85 per person per day for this option – and an additional 18% gratuity. This type of package can add up to quite a bit of money on a seven-day cruise or longer.

For additional savings, look into bundle pricing that includes specialty dining, Wi-Fi, photos and more. Purchasing them together may be more cost-effective. For example, Holland America offers a "Have It All" package that encompasses a shore excursion credit, a signature beverage package (including the service charge), one evening of specialty dining and Wi-Fi. If you're sailing on longer cruises of 10 to 21 days or more, the benefits increase. The line estimates savings of 50% when you purchase this bundle.

While these packages may not always work out in your favor, you'll at least know what your dining, imbibing, excursions, Wi-Fi and even additional activities on the cruise will cost.

Additional costs on a cruise ship

Cruisers will also incur additional fees from excursions, fitness classes, spa treatments, access to thermal spa rooms, babysitting services, ship tours, wine tastings, cocktail demonstrations, cooking classes, laundry services, and some entertainment venues and activities on the ship – such as Norwegian's racetrack and Carnival's first roller coaster at sea, BOLT. See some of the more popular added costs you'll want to consider below.

Wi-Fi access

If you need Wi-Fi during the cruise, that's another cost to factor into the total price. Here are two examples of pricing for internet plans for two cruise lines.

Carnival offers three options for Wi-Fi, using Starlink. The basic Social Wi-Fi Plan gives you access certain social media channels like Facebook Messenger, Instagram, Twitter, WhatsApp and more starting at $12.75 per day per person. The cost increases to $17 per day per person with the Value Wi-Fi Plan. This option gives you access to your email and to sites for weather, news, finance and more. It does not support Skype or music and video streaming services like Spotify and Netflix during your cruise.

Carnival's Premium Wi-Fi Plan starts at $18.70 per person per day and offers speeds up to three times faster than the Value plan. With this plan you can make Zoom calls and use Skype. For all three of these plans, you can save 15% off the total price if you book in advance of your trip.

Celebrity also uses Starlink. The line's "Always Included" fare includes basic internet, a classic drink package and gratuities. If you don't book that fare, Wi-Fi plans range from $20 per day for basic service to premium Wi-Fi at $35 per day.

  • Shore excursions

If you're traveling to far-flung or new destinations, you'll want to book shore excursions. Cruise lines recommend that you book excursions directly with them rather than hiring an independent tour company or operator, but it can be more expensive to book tours through the cruise line.

However, if you experienced a delay on an independent tour and couldn't get back to the ship on time, there's a chance you could get left behind if you're not on a ship-sponsored tour. If you decide to go with a private tour guide, be sure to book an excursion where you'll arrive back at the ship with plenty of time to spare before the vessel departs for the next destination. Most tour operators in busy cruise ports work with the cruise ship schedules all the time, so you should be fine with a reputable independent guide.

Some trips last an entire day or are once-in-a-lifetime adventures like dog-sledding on a glacier in Alaska or taking a helicopter ride in Iceland. These types of excursions can be costly, ranging anywhere from hundreds to even thousands of dollars.

If these types of experiences are not in your budget, then look for historic walking or panoramic driving tours. These excursions are shorter in duration and typically the least expensive tours available on the cruise. Most of these types of tours will cost less than $100. And, of course, there are always other options available that range between the lower and higher price range of excursions.

If your ship is docked directly in the town or city, then you'll be able to explore off the ship on your own for free. Some cruise lines also offer complimentary shuttle buses into town, or a round-trip ride for a nominal fee, if it's not within walking distance of the ship. That's another less expensive option for you to sightsee, shop or grab lunch in town.

Transportation

Transportation is another expense that's often overlooked in the total cost of a cruise. Consider if you'll be driving or flying to the cruise port. If you're driving, you'll have to pay for gas and parking at the port – and maybe a hotel the night before the cruise, depending on when you arrive and when your ship is scheduled to set sail. Don't forget the meals or beverages you'll purchase on the way.

If you're flying to the port, especially on a long-distance flight, it's best to come in a day early. In that case, you'll also have to pay for a hotel, transfers from the airport to the hotel and then a transfer (private hire, Uber or cab) to the ship's terminal. There will also be meals to budget for while you're in town before the cruise and a ride back to the airport after the cruise.

Souvenirs or forgotten items

Don't forget to account for purchases on the ship. Items that you forgot to bring from home will be more expensive on the ship. It's also easy to run up the bill when buying souvenirs for yourself or the kids. It's a good idea to periodically check your bill online or with guest services to see the current balance. You can keep a running tab of what you've billed to your stateroom – and also make sure that the charges are correct.

Cruise pricing checklist

To sum it up, here's a checklist of major items that will help you to compare costs across cruise lines and tally up the total cost of a cruise:

  • Base cruise price
  • Taxes, fees, gratuities and port expenses
  • Specialty dining
  • Beverage package
  • Optional activities
  • Miscellaneous expenses
  • Air or ground travel to the port
  • Hotel prior to embarking

If you don't want to budget for all the individual expenses related to a cruise – and you don't need the over-the-top entertainment of a larger cruise ship – consider booking a mostly all-inclusive or fully all-inclusive cruise with a luxury cruise line . These cruise lines include almost everything in your cruise fare.

Mostly all-inclusive cruises

One option for a mostly all-inclusive cruise is Viking Ocean Cruises . The line's nine all-veranda ocean-going vessels accommodate 930 passengers – and all of Viking's ships feature the same categories of staterooms and suites, dining, lounges, and entertainment venues across the fleet. The ships offer an immersive cultural curriculum on board with regional dishes, destination performances and enrichment lectures.

Viking's fares include veranda accommodations, port taxes and fees, free Wi-Fi, access to The Nordic Spa and fitness center, 24-hour room service, ground transportation (if you book airfare with Viking), and one complimentary excursion in each port. You'll also have complimentary alternative dining options and free beer, wine and soft drinks with lunch and dinner on board the ship. Specialty coffees, teas and bottled water are available 24 hours a day at no extra charge. Guests are also invited to a welcome cocktail party and farewell reception.

If you like to have an aperitif before your evening meal or an after-dinner cocktail, those beverages will be at an additional cost. You'll also need to budget for any optional shore excursions that are not included in the fare.

Keep in mind that Viking is an adults-only cruise line, so children younger than 18 are not permitted.

All-inclusive cruises

Silversea Cruises , Regent Seven Seas and Seabourn Cruise Line boast all-inclusive luxury experiences with shipwide amenities such as ocean-facing suites, butlers, premium spirits, fully stocked in-suite bars, no tipping and complimentary dining at world-class restaurants.

Additional perks with Regent Seven Seas include complimentary shore excursions, free two- or three-night land programs, a free one-night hotel stay before the cruise departure, transfers from the airport to the ship, and business class or economy airfare, depending on the destination.

Silversea offers door-to-door arrangements where everything is handled by the cruise line. You can also opt for a port-to-port all-inclusive rate if you prefer to make your own travel arrangements. If you're on one of the cruise line's expedition cruises, fares will include a pre- or post-cruise hotel stay. All Silversea fares cover a selection of complimentary shore excursions in each port.

If you're interested in an even smaller ship – and are sailing to the Caribbean or Mediterranean – SeaDream Yacht Club features an intimate luxury experience on its two 56-stateroom yachts. The fares include top-notch cuisine, open bar and gratuities, complimentary daily yoga, access to water sports activities and nightly movies under the stars.

How much does a luxury cruise cost for two?

If you want to go on a mostly adults-only luxury ship, what can you expect to pay for two people? This will depend on the ship, where you want to sail and for how long – and what amenities are included in the fare.

For a seven-night cruise in the Baltic region in June with Regent Seven Seas, an all-inclusive fare with suite accommodations is $12,540 ($6,270 per person). There are also additional perks available, depending on where you book the cruise. Some of the extras include a cash-back offer, a two-category upgrade and shipboard credit.

Silversea has a similar itinerary in June, and the fare also comes with added perks for $13,860 for two people ($6,930 per person) in suite accommodations.

While the price tag may seem high, compare the total cost with the base fare on a larger cruise ship and then add in all the extras.

See the top cruises on  GoToSea .

The bottom line

The average cost of a cruise is all over the map – and there are many variables to consider. Hiring a cruise specialist to navigate the rough waters may be your best option. Cruise specialists are also privy to special deals and incentives that you may not be able to access on your own.

Travel agents can also advise you of promotions that may include free specialty dining, beverage packages, complimentary Wi-Fi, shore excursions, discounts on solo and family travel, and more. This approach will save you the hassle of searching online or calling the individual cruise companies to check on what specials are available.

If you'd rather have one price with everything included so there's little room for surprises at the end of the trip, consider a mostly or fully all-inclusive cruise fare. If you don't need waterslides for the kids, big Broadway shows and high-tech entertainment, opt for a cruise on a small luxury line.

When doing the math and comparing the costs, you might be surprised how similar in price cruising with a larger mass-market cruise line and a smaller luxury line can be. In the end, your decision will come down to your personal preferences and what you value most for your cruise vacation.

Travel could be a good deal this summer. Here's when plane ticket prices will peak.

vacation travel cost

Spring is springing, and according to Hopper, it’s time to start thinking about your summer vacation plans.

New data from the online booking site shows some favorable trends for travelers in the next few months, including slightly lower airfares compared with 2023 and hotel and car rental prices that are more or less flat year-over-year.

Here’s what you need to know as you prepare to book, whether you’re looking for a domestic getaway or go on an overseas adventure. It’s also not too late to take advantage of deals on some last-minute trips.

How much are spring and summer plane tickets?

According to Hopper, the best deals right now are on domestic airline tickets. Round-trip flights within the U.S. are averaging $290 in April, but prices are expected to rise in the months ahead.

Hopper’s data shows prices for domestic flights will peak between May and June at $315 on average, then will gradually fall through the summer, reaching a low of $264 on average in September.

On a call with investors discussing first-quarter earnings Wednesday, Delta Air Lines CEO Ed Bastian said summer travel demand has been pushed forward in recent years in part because schools, especially in the South, are finishing their summer breaks earlier in the year.

This summer also will be a good time to travel internationally; Hopper data shows fares to most destinations abroad are down compared with last year.

“Airfare to international destinations continues to improve following two years of bloated prices due to quickly recovering demand, high fuel prices and supply constraints. Airfare to most major regions of the world has dropped compared to last year with the exception of trips to Canada,” Hayley Berg, Hopper’s chief economist, said in the report. “International fares remain higher than pre-pandemic levels to most regions, as higher fuel prices persist and airlines continue to rebuild capacity to many regions.”

How much will a hotel room for the spring and summer cost?

Hotel prices remain mostly flat compared with the same time last year. Rooms in the U.S. are averaging $206 a night; better deals are available in some trending international destinations like Osaka, Japan, and Istanbul, Turkey.

According to Hopper, Las Vegas, New York and Chicago remain popular destinations in the U.S.

Will car rental prices rise this summer?

Car rental prices also haven’t increased much since last year and average $42 a day, according to Hopper.

The report shows most travelers rent a car for about four days, and warm-weather destinations like Orlando and Los Angeles remain popular pickup points.

Like many things, travel costs have gone up in recent years . Everything from airfare and hotel accommodations to car reservations and event tickets has gotten more expensive, something that's required many people to increase their travel budgets or alter their travel plans.

Even higher-income households that may enjoy an annual or biannual trip with the family are starting to shy away from some of the traditionally popular vacation destinations. While there are still ways to afford these trips, here are the top places that many middle-class individuals now struggle to afford .

<ul> <li><strong>Average home value: </strong>$494,456</li> <li><strong>Livability score (out of 100):</strong> 60</li> <li><strong>Weather woes:</strong> Year-round heavy rains and high humidity</li> </ul>

Hawaii is one of the most popular travel destinations, as well as one that's becoming too expensive.

Aida Mollenkamp, travel planner and founder of Salt & Wind Travel , noted that many of her agency's clients are starting to struggle with Hawaii's costs.

"The major issue is that hotel rates, meals and tours are more expensive than before. Historically, our clients have been between a boutique four-star and five-star traveler, but have largely had to go down a class in hotels to meet their budget," said Mollenkamp. "We now suggest they budget at least $800 per day for lodging, transport, activities and food for a trip for 2 (but again, that will rarely cover a five-star these days)."

In some places, the time of year impacts your trip's costs. But this hasn't been the case with Hawaii.

"We aren't seeing as much seasonality in the hotel rates as we did pre-COVID," said Mollenkamp. "Inflation and cost of living have hit Hawai'i hard the last few years, so the companies pass it through to make sure they can still pay competitive wages. Five-star hotels that used to cost around $500 per night are now starting at $800 per night in shoulder season."

Specific places, like Maui, are even more expensive.

"Here, a week-long stay for a couple can reach approximately $4,200, which applies if you restrict your impulsive spending on dining, local activities, etc.," said Justin Albertynas, expert traveler and CEO of travel-tech startup Ratepunk . "The reason behind it being an expensive destination can be summarized in one sentence: Many want to go there, but there are few places to stay."

Italy isn't much different from Hawaii in terms of how travel costs.

"Italy is a funny scenario because you can still do a more affordable trip if you go off the beaten path to say, Sicily or the Alps. However, many of our clients want at least part of their trip to hit a major tourism spot, be it Florence or the Amalfi Coast," said Mollenkamp.

"The destinations have much longer high seasons than they used to -- now extending from early May through October -- and hotel rates reflect that," said Mollenkamp. "I'd say, on average, we've seen hotels 2x in price in these areas compared to their pre-COVID rates."

Other areas that have increased in price, Mollenkamp said. That includes private drivers, alternative lodgings like Airbnb and tours.

<p>With a million-dollar budget, you can stay at the best hotels and resorts in the world boasting unbelievable amenities, or even stay on your own private island. Here are some of the most luxurious accommodations you can find.</p>

The Maldives

The Maldives has long been a luxury destination, one that's already at the high end of many travelers' budgets. But it's also become more expensive.

"Prices for a week-long stay in [an iconic overwater] villa can easily stretch into the thousands, influenced by factors such as the level of luxury, resort amenities, and seasonality," said Albertynas. "While experienced travelers might occasionally snag hotel deals, dining costs, local activities, flights, and internal transfers can drastically inflate the overall expense of a vacation here."

Flight prices alone can put the Maldives out of reach. You can expect to spend anywhere from $1,000 to $3,000 on a single ticket. Multiply that by the number of people traveling with you and you're already looking at a pricey vacation -- without factoring in anything once you're there.

<p>If you're wondering how the British royal family spends its money, wonder no more -- it's actually all documented.</p> <p>According to the royal family's official 2021 Sovereign Grant Summary, the largest royal expense for the year was property maintenance, which includes the ongoing, long-term reservicing of Buckingham Palace. Property expenses totaled £49.5 million ($56.5 million) for the year. The next largest expense was staff payroll, which cost £24.1 million ($27.5 million). King Charles already has signaled he intends to cut staffing.</p>

Paris and London

While many parts of France and the U.K. are still affordable, top destinations like Paris and London are becoming less so for the typical middle-class family.

"Accommodation costs in central areas of these cities have surged, making it challenging for budget-conscious travelers to find affordable lodging options," said Stephanie Webb, travel expert and Tripshepherd travel guide. "Additionally, dining out and admission fees for attractions have also seen considerable price hikes, contributing to the overall affordability challenge."

Take Paris, for example.

"In Paris, the average cost of a hotel room in central areas can exceed $200 per night, with luxury accommodations reaching several hundred dollars or more," said Webb. "Dining at renowned restaurants or visiting popular attractions like the Louvre Museum can also come with hefty price tags."

In London, accommodations, food, and admission fees have also become increasingly expensive.

Ways To Make These Destinations More Affordable

Just because these places are expensive, it doesn't mean you can't still go. You'll need to plan accordingly, though. Here are a few tips to make your trip happen:

  • Start saving up ahead of time. Put aside a little extra money into a high-yield savings account each month until you have enough for the entire trip.
  • Create a travel budget. No matter where you're going, it's important to have a realistic budget that covers things like flights, accommodations, food, entertainment, souvenirs, and attractions.
  • Have flexibility in your schedule. If possible, go during the shoulder season or off-season. It might not always help, but it can often get you lower prices on hotels, flights, and the like.
  • Bundle your trip. Getting a vacation bundle that includes things like flights, accommodations, and rental vehicles or events could save you money overall.
  • Use a rewards card. Some credit cards offer rewards or bonuses in the form of miles or other travel perks. Just be sure to pay off your card every month before interest hits.

This AI Weather App Will Give You $10K if It Rains On Your Vacation

vacation travel cost

A vacation insurance app called Weather Promise will reimburse holidaymakers and workation-takers  with up to $10,000 if it rains during their trip.

The company – which uses AI to predict the weather for trip periods submitted by customers – currently counts all days with more than two hours of rainfall between 8 am and 8 pm as rainy.

Sound too good to be true? Here’s everything you need to know about how Weather Promise works and whether there are any competitors worth checking out before your next trip.

How Does Weather Promise Work?

Weather Promise will help cushion one of the most frustrating blows any person can be dealt – an unexpectedly wet, rainy holiday that makes you feel like you’ve wasted your money and your annual PTO allowance . But how does it work?

Weather Promise uses AI to analyze data from more than 2.3 million locations an hour to predict the weather for customers’ vacations.

Then, customers pay between $5 and $500 for insurance via a travel partner organizing their trip. Prices vary depending on the length and nature of the trip, as well as how much it costs.

If it rains more than the AI-generated “guarantee” has predicted, then customers can be reimbursed up to $10,000.

Surfshark logo

What Are the Company’s Terms?

As we’ve covered, to be reimbursed for any given day, there has to be at least two hours of rainfall between the hours of 8 am and 8 pm – but it also must exceed 0.06 inches of rainfall.

Some other recent reporting on Weather Promise specifies that it needs to rain for four hours, but at the time of writing, the website’s purchase calculator currently specifies just half of that, making it even easier to claim.

While the insurance cost itself can get quite high, the payouts are also quite large. If it rains more than is guaranteed, you can claim back the entire trip cost. It doesn’t have to rain during your entire trip for you to claim all of the money.

For example, a seven-day trip to Athens, Greece at the start of May costing $1,400 can be insured with Weather Promise for around $73.

Are Other Businesses Providing Similar Services?

While Weather Promise has been hitting the headlines recently, it’s not the only company that offers weather-based insurance services.

Sensible Weather also offers similar services and is now partnering with venues and outdoor activity providers to offer high-temperature weather guarantees straight from the welcome desk.

There are, of course, broader travel insurance deals you can buy from most insurance companies that encompass weather-based reimbursements. But companies focusing solely on the weather are still few and far between – Weather Promise launched around two months ago in February 2024.
