Bucket lists are very personal that require a lot of thought. The point is to experience something fully. Reach beyond your comfort zone and go for it! I’ve created this bucket list, with much care, focusing on Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.

Not all of the items are appropriate for everyone. It’s certainly not “one size fits all.” And to be completely honest I’m not even certain I’ll be able to complete all 50. But I promise to try, since the whole purpose is to push yourself physically and mentally.

I feel like the older I get the less adventurous I become. Why? I think, like many people, we get comfortable in the routines of life. We choose the things that come easy because we’ve already done them…it’s always easier next time. I’m done living within my bubble!

My friends are sometimes subject to my rantings and speeches about being sick of simply existing . I want to EXPERIENCE! The conclusion that I live where others vacation recently came to me and I realized just how much beauty rests right here in my own backyard.

What are we waiting for people?!

It’s not like I have to travel great distances, hopping flights and packing for a huge endeavor. Yes, the Upper Peninsula is rather large but everything is within driving distance for me. Why not figure out a way to bring it all to you ?

I understand that there are people who may read this that likely do not live here, or even close by, but I’d encourage you to consider Michigan’s Upper Peninsula for your next big adventure. There are some pretty incredible things here. Things I didn’t even realize existed until starting the research on this project.

Michigan’s Upper Peninsula Bucket List

Most people have seen the spectacular photos but have you ever experienced the Aurora Borealis for yourself? Some of the best views can be found in dark sky areas along Lake Superior and I’ve recently learned that there’s an app for that !

#2 Visit some Ice Caves

I will admittedly say I’m not a fan of winter…I know, weird since I live way up here but I’m trying to learn to love it. Experiencing some of the most amazing views the cold has to offer is exactly what the soul needs to become a believer that the icy season is totally worth it. I’m actually looking forward to bringing out those snowshoes I’ve had hiding away in my closet for the last 3 years. The most well known are the Eben and Grand Island ice caves.

There are so many things on this list that take you near water…we are surrounded by it here in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula so may I suggest you get yourself an affordable, waterproof, durable camera . I will also tell you that a decent pair of waders is a must! Whether fishing in a river or one of our great lakes, it’s incredible even if you aren’t catching anything.

#5 See the Soo Locks, Sault Ste Marie

So I’ve been told it’s a sight to see and I’ve heard it’s dripping with history. Some massive and genius engineering can be witnessed while allowing the passage of 1,000 ft freighters that carry some 72,000 tons of cargo. See the new observation deck and pretty park nearby that’s perfect for a picnic.

#6 Climb Castle Rock, St. Ignace

I’ve actually done this one before but I was so terrified and paralyzed with my fear of heights that I couldn’t get a grip and enjoy the view. My goal this time? Conquer that fear, look around and take in those fall colors – cause I’m thinking that could be the best time to go. Spectacular! Also, let’s keep in mind that there are much scarier things on this list, this is simply a warm up.

#7 Take a Pictured Rocks kayak tour, Munising

If you live in Michigan and are on Facebook …ok who’s not a Facebook yet? I’m certain you’ve seen someone share a photo or have scrolled passed a promoted post for one of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula most notable and recognizable features, Pictured Rocks of Munising. And I’m here to tell ya there’s no better way to see one of natures best master pieces.

#8 The Deer Ranch, St. Ignace

This little gem is located just west of the Mackinac Bridge on U.S. 2. Seems to me that the best time to go may be in the spring when the new fawns are being bottle fed.

#9 Oswald’s Bear Ranch, Newberry

The Upper Peninsula is home to 90 percent of Michigan’s entire population of black bears and Oswald’s is the largest, bear only, ranch in the U.S. Starting as a sanctuary for orphaned cubs it has continued to grow each year.

#10 Garlyn Zoo, Naubinway

Don’t expect to see zebra and elephants but this little zoo has a great setting tucked among the pines with wooded trails. Home to some of the Upper Peninsula’s native creatures and others including exotics like tigers, lemur and camel.

#11 Do the Mighty Mac Bridge Walk

Every year on Labor Day thousands of people come together to walk the Mackinac Bridge . It used to be the only time one could travel on foot to experience this grand beauty in such a way. They now have the tractor parade, fall bridge race and an ORV drive, among others!

#12 Snowmobile the Mackinac Island ice bridge

This has just fascinated me ever since I learned that it existed. The ice bridge is formed between St. Ignace and Mackinac Island. It doesn’t form every year because, as you can imagine, the conditions have to be just right. If you’re in the area and happen to be riding a snowmobile on one of those “right conditions” kind of day, then perhaps you’ll follow the ice bridge and experience Mackinac Island during the winter. *This is at your own risk! #13 Hike Tahquamenon Falls

Approximately 4.5 miles, this hike is something I’ve wanted to do for a long time. With Tahquamenon Falls only about 30 minutes from Twin Cedars Resort , I’m not exactly sure what I’m waiting for! Spring will be popping with new life, summer would be luscious, fall simply gorgeous and winter would be a wonderland. Must do! And I just bought these hiking shoes for the adventure:)

#14 Cut River Bridge

A quick stop along your journey on U.S. 2 northwest of St. Ignace. Don’t miss the wooden staircase leading to the river below. A little treasure that many of the passing cars are clueless to.

#15 North Country Trail’s Niagara Escarpment near Trout Lake

Hike, snowshoe or cross country ski. Connect with nature within 5 minutes from here .

#16 Kayak around Mackinac Island

Yes, the island ends up on this list in several places, but it’s just so darn gorgeous that I can’t help myself! There are many ways to see it but this seems rather unique and sounds pretty special. There is a tour you can do that I found by simply searching on Trip Advisor and I would highly recommend these essentials for any Michigan kayaking adventure!

#17 Zip-lining at the Mystery Spot, St. Ignace

I probably should’ve been here by now. The Mystery Spot will be a mystery until I visit and I’m not sure what it’s all about…mystery? I’m not sure if the zip-line is worth it and I can’t say it’s something to write home about but I’ll be certain to let you all know when I finally just do the thing. I will admit, however, that my fear of heights is already kicking in.

Which is good since we’re surrounded by it and since it’s said that if you’re in Michigan then you can’t be any more than 2 miles away from a body of it in any given direction. There are many waterfalls dotted all over the Upper Peninsula and all over this list.

#19 Kitch-Iti-Kipi (The Big Spring), Manistique

One I’ve already done in my past, long before this blog was ever dreamed up, which means I must return! It’s totally worth it and can be a quick stop along the journey. Yes, there are massive fish that you can see from 60 feet above but don’t even dream of bringing your fishing pole!

#20 Hike Escarpment trail at Porcupine Mtns, Lake of the Clouds

Said to be one of the most scenic short hikes in all of Michigan. With a name like “Lake of the Clouds” it has to be stunning! The trail is about 4 miles, with loose rocks and roots – hoping these will come in handy .

#21 Visit the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum, Paradise

Lake Superior is considered the largest freshwater lake in the world by surface area and is the world’s third-largest freshwater lake by volume and the largest by volume in North America. One must understand the danger this great lake carries. I mean when there’s a famous song about a ship wreck on this massive body of water you have to think how important the history is . Just visit the museum you won’t regret it!

#22 Chapel Falls hike, Grand Marais

Another falls…but it’s near Grand Marais, which apparently is an incredible stop along the Lake Superior shoreline and I was shocked to learn how close it is . There are many falls in this area, want to do them all ?

#23 Jump off the Pier, Grand Marais

I’ve lived in several areas that have lighthouse piers and never once have I had the guts to jump. Many michiganders know the feeling of a summertime pier jump, guess we better get on the bandwagon!

#24 Sip and Sail Sunset Cruise from Mackinac Island

This just sounds fun and beautiful. Imagine a glass of wine (or sip of your choice), the incredible backdrop of Mackinac Island and her sister bridge with a sunset topping it all off. Take an Arnold Transit Co. boat from Mackinac Island for this sweet summer, or fall, ending to your day. *Update* Arnold Ferries were sold to Star Line Ferry Company during the fall/winter season 2016. It appears Star Line will continue sunset cruises and include fireworks cruises every Saturday from July through September.

#25 Point Iroquois Light Station

Although it’s no longer an active lighthouse the history and views make it worthy of a stop. Explore the house, traverse the wooden staircase down the bluff then take in the shoreline of Lake Superior.

#26 Whitewater raft Piers Gorge

A rough section of the Menominee River located near Iron Mountain. For some reason I always thought I’d have to travel to some river in an eastern state to get to experience the thrill of whitewater rafting. Welp, it’s right here folks!

#27 Climb the Pine Mt Ski Jump, Iron Mt.

Those who fear heights will be challenged with this one! Known as one of the tallest man-made ski jumps in the world, it hosts one epic event spread over a weekend in February with tailgating and nearly 20,000 spectators. A fantastic thing to witness but if you’re interested in the views, go for a climb yourself during warmer months and behold the beauty. *Update – I was recently told that climbing the ski jump is illegal…bummer, if true, but I’ve left it on this list for now until I know for sure.

#28 Eat a 5 course meal at the Grand Hotel, Mackinac Island

With all this adventure I’m craving a bit of fancy.

#29 Estivant Pines Nature Sanctuary, Copper Harbor

The enormity of the pines here have to be seen up close and personal. Many of the trees are 600 years old and this sanctuary is among the last of Michigan’s old growth white pines.

#30 Sunset/Full Moon Kayak Tour, Hessel

If you can plan it just right a sunset view with the rising full moon would be a great experience. I can just picture the sparkling moonlit water and the sounds of nature. Ahhh…

#31 Lakenenland Sculpture Park, Marquette

A free park open 7 days a week with sculptures made out of scrap iron. Tom Lakenen, an iron worker with a calling to make art moved his pieces to this 37 acre property after his hometown made him remove them from his lawn. Possibly a good move all around…his neighbors are happy and so are the visitors that can enjoy the whimsy-ness .

#32 Visit Isle Royale

This national park is touted as “the edge of wilderness.” The park is open from May – October because of the harsh weather during the rest of the year and you must obtain a special permit to explore the island. Certainly an adventure I’ll use a guide for. This is one of the scarier Upper Peninsula destinations for me. Can’t wait!

#33 Sail on Lake Superior

Sailing has always sparked some curiosity in me. Those big wooden vessels, out on the open sea with wind guiding your path – just sounds magical!

#34 Take a U.P. Wine Tour

Just to name a few…Leigh’s Garden Winery of Escanaba,  End of the Road Winery in Germfask and Northern Sun Winery located in Bark River. Currently there are around 8 or 9 wineries in the Upper Peninsula and since I love wine so much I’ll be making my way around, then sharing it with you.

#35 Taste U.P. Craft Beer

Michigan is known for it’s craft beer so if you’re not too hungover from your wine tour make your way around for the beer of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Breweries stretch from east to west with several in-between. I’d love to visit all of them but if you’d like to get a taste of all of them in one spot try out the Annual U.P. Fall Beer Festival in Marquette .

#36 Stand Up Paddle Boarding, Escanaba

We’ve talked about getting paddle boards here at Twin Cedars Resort and I’m looking forward to that. But experiencing it along the Lake Michigan shoreline in Escanaba, on a bright sun shiny day, makes me think I’d never even realize the great workout to be had while having so much fun.

#37 Attend the U.P. State Fair, Escanaba

Escanaba again? Yep! Who knew the Upper Peninsula had it’s very own state fair? See, I told you the U.P. was like it’s own separate state. Plan your trip for August!

#38 U.P. Lake Michigan Beaches

Miles of sandy shoreline and sparkling waters, Lake Michigan tends to be a bit warmer if you’re into taking a dip, than Lake Superior is. Remember these are very large bodies of water with strong currents, be careful and enjoy the beach!

#39 Laughing Whitefish Falls

It’s possible that I’ll just take a full weekend and do a falls tour around the Upper Peninsula. Oh all the beautifulness…

#40 Karst Cave Tour, Trout Lake

Holy crap this really is in my backyard! When I asked Bob about this one he didn’t seem fazed. I say something like, “did you know there are caves right here in Trout Lake?” And he says, “yeah at the Fiborn rock quarry.” And I say, “how come I didn’t know and how come you never took me there?” He says, “I looked for them once but couldn’t find them.” So I found a tour company because I’m thinking you shouldn’t do this one alone.

#41 Drummond Island Cliff Overlook Hike

This island has been on my list for a long time. I can’t be sure all that’s there so I figure I’ll plan this trip then report on any other cool things to see while visiting.

#42 Watch a meteor shower in the dark sky at Twin Cedars Resort

The wonder of a shooting star…Get a guide to all the happenings beyond our atmosphere here to know the best times to star gaze.

#43 Underground Mine Tour, Greenland

Several different types of tours to choose from. I’m thinking of going with the one that has us propelling down a mine shaft…there goes my heights fear again…and enclosed places if that’s an issue for you. Hey go big or go home right? That’s actually not necessary through Adventure Mine Tours , but they don’t call it adventure for nothin!

#44 Hungarian Falls

Since you’ll be on that side of the state anyway…behold the beauty!

#45 Glass Bottom Shipwreck Boat Tour, Munising

The history of shipwrecks on Lake Superior is part of the culture up here, see them where they continue to rest. And with the Pictured Rocks National lake shore in the background you’ll always have something fantastic to look at. This one’s like 2 in 1. Hmmm…sounds good!

#46 Agawa Canyon Tour Train

Canadian, yes, but you still have to go through the Upper Peninsula to get there and you’ll get some unforgettable views. Taking a train seems so timeless, something I’ve always wanted to do. My husband says he’s done this tour before, I’m thinking it’s high time he take me on a little excursion. *Update: WE DID IT!

#47 Thomas Rock Scenic Overlook, Big Bay Marquette

A short, easy nature trail with signs identifying the natural growth and wildlife. Education and adventure – right up my alley!

#48 Mt. Baldy

Also known as Mt. Lookout, an approximate 3 mile gradual incline hike that is so worth it!

#49 Take a plane to Mackinac Island

Little planes to a little island. Sounds scary to me but I have friends that do this all the time. Thinking the aerial view would be pretty fantastic too!

#50 Jump off the rocks and swim at Devil’s Washtub, Copper Harbor

I’m not one who would generally jump into dark waters that I’m unfamiliar with, so of course I had to add this to the list since it’s all about overcoming fears and just “doing the thing.”

Wagner Falls Is One of the Best Waterfalls in the Upper Peninsula

Seney National Wildlife Refuge - Fabulous Wildlife Drive

If you love nature, water and wildlife drives, you will absolutely love the Seney National Wildlife Refuge.  You will see lots of birds, turtles and wildlife as you drive this scenic drive past ponds and meadows.

Proud to bring you the prettiest places to visit in the Upper Peninsula with some of the best views that you will find in all of Michigan!

The State of Michigan’s slogan is “Pure Michigan” and you can get plenty of that with a trip to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan aka a trip to the UP!

This is remote Michigan!

I did a 2-week road trip around the Upper Peninsula, and here are things to know about!

This UP road trip route will start from the Mackinac Bridge, which is the eastern Upper Peninsula , so it can work in this order when you’re coming from the Mackinac Bridge and the Lower Peninsula of Michigan.

If you’re driving to the UP from the Wisconsin side, which is the western Upper Peninsula , the Porcupine Mountains can be your first stop.

No matter which direction you drive, you can make many scenic stops!

I’ve also included ideas for where to stay, including hotels and campgrounds.

• If you’ll be in Marquette for a few days: Staybridge Suites Marquette (IHG)

1. St Ignace and Mackinac Bridge area

St Ignace is the city you’ll pass through right after you drive across the Mackinac Bridge.

Straits State Park is located near the Mackinac Bridge.

If you’re limited on time, then you can keep driving north.

But before really starting to drive north, make a slight detour to the west and take US-2 aka Lake Michigan Scenic Highway for a small part so you can drive directly along the lake.

Make a stop (safely!) and get out of the car to walk along the top of small sand dunes and the beach.

Also if you want to make a detour to the next destination, you can go to the Soo Locks , which is a narrow water crossing where massive cargo ships go through. This is considered an engineering feat. (Observation deck closed in summer 2020 due to health safety reasons, but you can still see it from ground level.)

2. Whitefish Point

Now you can make your way up to what’s been called the “Graveyard of the Great Lakes” or the “Graveyard of Lake Superior.”

It’s said that it gets this name because of the MANY shipwrecks that occurred right around here.

The Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum is located here, and there is a lighthouse here too.

You can also go for a long walk on the beach in search of colorful rocks!

After your visit to Whitefish Point, you may also be interested in Crisp Point or Vermilion Point along the shores of Lake Superior!

3. Tahquamenon Falls State Park

You’ll have passed the turn-off for Tahquamenon Falls on your way up to Whitefish Point so you’re coming back down south a little bit.

These waterfalls are the most popular waterfalls in Michigan.

The Upper Falls are the best for viewing, and the Lower Falls are the best if you want to get up close and personal with the waterfalls and wade a bit in the Tahquamenon River that feeds the waterfalls. You can take a boat across the river to a small island!

As you drive to the west from Tahquamenon Falls, you’ll want to stick to the numbered roads (county/state/government roads) so you won’t end up on the real backroads of the UP! (These are backroads that you don’t want to end up on!)

Even worse, you don’t want to get stuck in sand on Rabbit Patch Road like a bunch of other tourists. For example if you decide to go from Tahquamenon Falls to Muskallonge Lake State Park campground .

When I arrived at Muskallonge Lake, the state park worker there said a ton of people had been rescued from there! aka needed a tow truck to get them out! $$$ This google maps fail is real! Read the comments on youtube.

PLUS… A road that you DO want to take… maybe!

If you’ll be driving from Tahquamenon Falls to Pictured Rocks (next on the list!), you may consider a slight detour to drive along the Grand Marais Truck Trail .

This is a gravel road that goes right along Lake Superior in part, and you’ll find a number of access points where you can walk down to the Lake Superior shoreline!

4. Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore

This is a national park site, and 1 of 3 national lakeshores located in the Great Lakes, which are the only national lakeshores in the United States.

So as a national lakeshore, there are tons of spots for scenic sites! This includes overlooks, waterfalls , and beaches .

Best quick stops include the overlooks of the Miners Castle and Log Slide .

Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is best known for its cliffs. You can see the Pictured Rocks cliffs by boat and sea kayak.

You can also see the cliffs by foot by hiking the Chapel Loop Trail.

If you’re after hiking trails that come with Lake Superior views, be sure to see the list of best hikes in Pictured Rocks .

For hiking trails that take you to waterfalls and the Lake Superior coastline, have a look at Sable Falls Trail and Chapel Falls Trail .

Looking for colorful agate stones is a thing on the shores of Lake Superior, and you can do this in Pictured Rocks too.

Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore stretches from Grand Marais on one side to the east, and Munising on the other side to the west.

The big sand dunes are on the Grand Marais side .

The famous Pictured Rocks cliffs and the tree growing on a rock are on the Munising side.

Camping in the Upper Peninsula in/near Pictured Rocks:

• Twelvemile Beach (Lake Superior camping!)
• Hurricane River
• Little Beaver Lake

• Pictured Rocks backcountry campsites
• Bay Furnace campground on Lake Superior
• Au Train Lake campground on an inland lake

5. Marquette

The biggest city in the UP.

But don’t expect too much! It’s no “big city” compared to the top American cities. The downtown is a cute little area. This is also a college town, home to Northern Michigan University. 

If you want to load up on groceries, this can be a place to do so. There’s a Meijer here. (An indication of how “big” Marquette is. ;))

If you’re staying in Marquette a few days, look at Staybridge Suites Marquette (IHG) .

6. Keweenaw Peninsula

This is more of an “off-beat” UP spot, as not as many people get up to the Keweenaw Peninsula compared to other places in the UP.

Copper Harbor is the city that’s located at the far northern tip of the UP (and far northern tip of Michigan). Houghton is the main city in the Keweenaw Peninsula. This is another college town, where Michigan Tech University is located.

For nature and incredible Lake Superior views, don’t miss Hunters Point Park and Devil’s Washtub . The Brockway Mountain overlook is another good spot.

Copper Harbor is also known for mountain biking trails . You can rent bikes there or bring your own.

The area is also “Copper Country” and there are many spots around the Keweenaw Peninsula where you can learn about the former big copper industry of the region, including through visits to places that are a part of the Keweenaw Heritage Trail and Keweenaw National Historical Park .

7. Porcupine Mountains State Park

Now this is the far western Upper Peninsula , getting close to Wisconsin.

Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park is said to be Michigan’s largest state park. You get hills inland, and Lake Superior on the coastline here.

There are basically 2 sides to the state park.

Union Bay is the side with the visitor center and famous Lake of the Clouds overlook . This is also the side where you can access the Escarpment Trail , considered to be among the best hikes in the Porcupine Mountains.

Presque Isle is the side with the waterfalls. There is a riverside waterfall hike you can do to see a series of waterfalls with the Presque Isle River waterfalls loop .

And as the name of Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park indicates, the Porcupine Mountains (aka the Porkies) has miles and miles of wilderness. To go along with that, there are hiking trails that can be a part of your backcountry camping experience. There are both campsites and cabins available that you can hike to, some right along Lake Superior!

Camping in the Upper Peninsula in the Porcupine Mountains:

• Union Bay campground (lakefront campsites available)
• Presque Isle campground
• List of camping spots in the Porcupine Mountains (including backcountry campsites and cabins)

On your way to the next place on the list, you might want to go to Bond Falls !

8. Southern peninsulas of the UP

Now to make it a loop of the UP, you can start driving back east, along the southern part of the Upper Peninsula.

You can visit a peninsula on a peninsula!

There are smaller peninsulas you can stop at that are more off-beat UP spots.

There’s the Garden Peninsula, where you can visit Fayette Historic State Park (camping available) for a bit of history on what life around here was like back in the day. Here you can also see a unique geological formation for the region, with some dolomite cliffs that are a part of the Niagara Escarpment .

And there’s also the Stonington Peninsula where you can visit the Peninsula Point Lighthouse.

You can climb up to the top of this lighthouse.

9. Kitch-iti-kipi

And then continuing the drive, near Manistique is one of the most popular spots in all of the UP.

Kitch-iti-kipi is where you can see the bubbling big spring ! You can ride the free observation raft to actually see down below where the water is “bubbling” beneath the sand and entering into the spring.

And then drive back to the Mackinac Bridge to complete your circle of the Upper Peninsula!!!

One more stop on your Michigan road trip

And if you want to make an overnight stop in the Lower Peninsula on your way up north to the UP (or back down south), you might consider Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore !

It might be a slight detour, but you might think it’s worth it!

This is located on the shores of Lake Michigan.

To start your UP road trip

Now going back to the start! Before you make it to the Upper Peninsula…

If you’re driving up from the south in Michigan and looking for a stop just before you cross over to the UP, then make a stop at either Wawatam Park (Lake Huron side) or McGulpin Point (Lake Michigan side, picture below) so you can have views of the Mackinac Bridge from the Lower Peninsula!

And then you will drive across the Mackinac Bridge to the Upper Peninsula!!

What is the prettiest part of the Upper Peninsula?

The prettiest parts of the Upper Peninsula include Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore , Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park , the Keweenaw Peninsula , and the Lake Superior lighthouses !

For the visual, here’s the basic route that’s outlined on the list below. 

Lake Superior circle tour

The Lake Superior circle tour is a thing. (So is a Michigan scenic byway.)

Circling Lake Superior means driving around the lake through Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Ontario (Canada)!

If you want to do the whole loop, Americans do need a passport to travel to Canada, or an enhanced drivers license if you live in a state where that’s offered… like Michigan!

Part of this drive around the UP will cover the Michigan stops to make on the Lake Superior circle tour!

Lake Superior isn’t the only one of the Great Lakes that you can see on a UP road trip though!

The Upper Peninsula touches 3 of the Great Lakes: Lake Superior , Lake Michigan, and Lake Huron! With the trip route below, you can see all 3 of these lakes!

As you are driving, you may also come across signs for the Lake Michigan circle tour and the Lake Huron circle tour too.

You can also make your Michigan road trip into:

North Country Trail

There is also something called the North Country Trail which is a national scenic trail .

This is a hiking trail (backpacking trail) that extends for 4,600 miles across many states from the midwest to east coast. Part of it goes through the Upper Peninsula.

I did this as a 2 week camping trip. So it’s possible to find campgrounds along the way. 

For Michigan state park campgrounds, be sure to see this list of state park campgrounds in the UP that will give you amazing views of the Great Lakes! You’ll want to make reservations, and this is the state park camping reservation website .

For national park campgrounds , you will also want to make reservations, and this is the national park camping reservation website .

You can also find Michigan state forest campgrounds and Hiawatha National Forest campgrounds along the way too.

Prepare for minimal cell and data service

Even if you won’t be camping, you want to prepare as if you won’t have cell service (data service) as you drive from one destination to another within the UP.

Since this is remote Michigan, there’s a good chance you will hardly get any data service while on the road. (You may get a little service as you’re passing through small towns.)

Most importantly, this means that it would be a very good idea to download offline google maps before you go. This is free.

GPS mostly works around the UP, so as long as you have offline maps, then you’ll be able to navigate even if you aren’t able to get data.

Climb a Lighthouse

Standing guard over treacherous waters, 40 lighthouses dot the UP, including 12 open to the public. Among our favorites:

Eagle Harbor Lighthouse and Museum Period furnishings decorate this 1871 redbrick Keweenaw Peninsula light . Also explore maritime, Keweenaw history and commercial fishing museums on the grounds.

Peninsula Point Built of Cream City brick, the square tower attracts butterfly-watchers in the fall. Peninsula Point is located in Hiawatha National Forest at the southern tip of the Stonington Peninsula between Bays de Noc.

Point Iroquois Lighthouse Resting on a bluff overlooking the lake and Whitefish Bay, this lighthouse is also part of Hiawatha National Forest. Visitors can climb the 72 steps to the lantern deck or take a wooden walkway to the beach.

Dig into History

Much of the history of the area revolves around mining. Learn about the boom and decline at these sites and others.

Keweenaw National Historical Park Sites related to the Upper Peninsula copper mining boom days, like the Quincy Mine in Hancock, scatter across the Keweenaw Peninsula as part of this historical park.

Fayette Historic State Park On the south shore of the Upper Peninsula, explore eerie remains of an iron-smelting town . Camping and recreation also available, near Fayette.

Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park Michigan's largest state park has 90 miles of trails leading to waterfalls, rustic campsites and mountain views. Tahquamenon Falls State Park The region's largest waterfall stars at this park 73 miles west of Sault Ste. Marie . Escape to an Island

Isle Royale National Park Unspoiled forests, wilderness lakes and rugged shoreline are the attractions at this remote group of islands , the least-visited of the national parks. Ferries from Houghton and Copper Harbor carry nature lovers to the 45-mile-long wilderness anchoring 454 islands. Stay at Rock Harbor Lodge near the dock, or make arrangements for camping.

Small towns capture the charm and distill the history of the Upper Peninsula.

If your idea of a romantic weekend is getting away from it all (but still being close to great restaurants and attractions), the UP delivers. 9 Best Places to Visit in The Upper Peninsula of Michigan

I have to admit, when I first traveled through it, I didn’t expect that there were so many things to do in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and in hindsight, I wish I stayed around this region longer to do just that. But never the less, I did see a lot and in this post, I want to share 9 of the best places to see there.

Here are the 9 best places to visit in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan:

• Mackinac Island Arch.
• Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore.
• Scott Falls.
• Presque Isle State Park.
• Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park.
• Presque Isle River Waterfalls Loop Trail.
• Superior Falls.
• Eben Ice Caves.
• Apostle Islands.

I was able to see 6 of the 9 places on this list of the most beautiful places in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and while I did rush through the area, you certainly shouldn’t if you have more time than I did.

1) Mackinac Island’s Arch Rock:

Mackinac Island is a very small island that you can access by ferry once you enter the Upper Peninsula of Michigan (from the main Michigan state itself). It has a lot of attractions to check out, including trails, caves and so forth, but the main thing in my opinion would be Arch Rock .

In my case, I actually realized I missed this spot because I figured the main attractions of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan were in the northern end of it. Reaching this place requires a boat though, so keep this in mind. But hopefully, you won’t make my mistake and miss it! 

2) Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore:

The prettiest part of the entire Upper Peninsula of Michigan has to be Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore (at least this is I thought) and it was the main attraction I wanted to see during my road trip in that area.

This is a national park area that spans for over 20 miles across the shoreline of Michigan. On it, you will find tons of awesome things to explore, from beach waterfalls, to kayak adventures and much more. See my post above on what to do in this beautiful park but for sure, if you visit the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, this has to be your main go to spot and just as well, it’s also one of the best places to see the Northern Lights in the USA .

3) Scott Falls:

I consider Scott Falls to be a small but cool “Easter Egg” in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. It can be found on your GPS and is identified as “Lake Superior Historical Marker Scott Falls”.

It is a beautiful waterfall right off road 28 and it’s really easy to miss. In our case, we accidentally saw it while passing by and of course, we had to stop to check it out. A trail is available around the waterfall, but be sure to stop here. And right next to it is a cool little beach you can also explore if you like.

4) Presque Isle State Park:

Presque Isle State Park is a very small, but extremely scenic park I highly recommend checking out. They have beaches, cliff jumps, cliffs and beautiful areas to check out the sunsets, which is when we arrived there. We didn’t have much time, but we did get to see a number of things at this park before heading off to the town nearby to grab supper.

An interesting coincidence to note is that the picture you see above (of me by the beach) is at this park and it’s also an area I remembered seeing on Google well over a decade ago (possibly 2) and I never knew what this area was. What an exciting feeling it was when I realized this same beach was what I had “wished” I saw all those years ago and it finally came true there and then!

5) Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park (Lake of The Clouds Overlook):

After the first day of my road trip to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, my buddy and I stayed at a hotel in the Porcupine Mountains and in the morning explored and drove around the whole area, stopping by and checking out certain spots. The first place we saw was a beautiful overlook called Lake of The Clouds. It’s easy to reach and quite a sight.

6) Presque Isle River Waterfalls Loop Trail:

After checking out Lake of The Clouds overlook, my buddy and I drove through the Porcupine Mountains and on the way saw signs for a waterfall trail area. We checked it out, and there was a beautiful trail to walk which took you down steps, across a beautiful bridge, arch rocks, sea caves and an awesome view of Lake Superior in parts.

7) Superior Falls (Legion County State Park):

The last spot my buddy and I saw on our road trip through the Upper Peninsula of Michigan was this small, but also scenic park. There are 2 things worth noting here that make it worth visiting:

There are giant red cliffs here (east of the waterfall) and a cool trail that takes you behind an electric station and to a beautiful waterfall with giant gorges around it. The second trail is what takes you to Superior Falls and there are some interactive things to do there like hiking, climbing and if the water level is low enough, going over to the other side of the waterfall.

8) Eben Ice Caves:

There are certain parts of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan which are best to check out in the winter time (or at least before spring begins) and one of those places happens to be the Eben Ice Caves. It is a gorge/cave area where every year (during winter), the ice formations over it cover it up almost entirely and basically cover that cave from the outside. There is a trailhead known as the Eben Ice Caves trailhead which will take you to this place. It’s only about half a mile to it, but it will likely be in snow covered areas. Once you get there, the scenery is beautiful and I have also seen this area photographed at night with lights pointing towards it (or from the inside), making for amazing colors and views to check out.

9) Apostle Islands National Lakeshore (Wisconsin):

The last spot on this is officially not located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. But it’s very close to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan’s border (about 15 miles away from it) and while it’s not an official spot in this region, I honestly don’t care because it’s stunning and missing it would be a huge mistake in my opinion!

For specifics, the 4 main reasons I decided to add Apostle Islands to the list is as follows:

• This place is absolutely amazing and matches and even beats Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore in some cases.
• It’s way less crowded than Pictured Rocks.
• It’s basically a series of many islands with sea caves, like Pictured Rocks, but there’s actually more.
• And finally, when most people travel to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, it’ll be close enough to also stop at the Apostle Islands and I highly recommend you do because it may be an even better place to visit than anything that you see in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.

The best Upper Peninsula attractions to see if you’re tight on time:

If you happen to be traveling through this area and tight on time like I was, I would prioritize the following attractions (in hindsight):

• Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore (the top spot in the Upper Peninsula in my opinion).
• Apostle Islands (it’s the best place to see near the Upper Peninsula).
• The rest that is on this list should be secondary to the above 2 spots.

I love finding and hearing about hidden getaways when it comes to the outdoors. Especially when it comes to hiking in the woods! I never would have given northern Michigan much thought when it came to the number of sight seeing spots to see.

Could you possibly do any backcountry skiing in this area in the winter?

100% Brad (on the backcountry skiing question). The Upper Peninsula of Michigan gets very cold, snow and icy during the winter seasons and you can even walk across a bit of Lake Superior at times. So yes, such a sport would be very suitable for this region.

What a beautiful area!  I would love to visit, especially Presque Isle State Park (because I love the picture you posted!). I did a quick Google check and discovered that this area is an easy 2-day road trip from my home state of New Hampshire, which also has some awesome wilderness if you wanted to check it out!  Thank you for posting this great information! 

Yeah I’m very familiar with New Hampshire and have visited the White Mountains, among other areas there. It’s a stunning state honestly and in regards to the Upper Peninsula, yeah it’ll probably take you about 2 days to get there. 

I started in NYC when I went here, and it also took me 2 days to reach, but I was taking my time and visiting areas along the way and that brings up another good point:

See places between New Hampshire and here too. Here are some of my recommendations:

Smugglers Notch in Vermont (very close to you).

Ausable Chasm in New York.

Finger Lakes (also in New York).

Cuyahoga Valley National Park (Ohio).

This is a great article and honestly eye-opening for me as I didn’t realize Michigan extended to that part of the country much less the beauty it holds! I have heard of Superior falls only because I have very distant family who lived around Lake Superior and they offhandedly mentioned the falls but I didn’t realize just how breathtaking they and the rest are you mentioned in your article. Next time I am in those neck of the woods I will definitely need to go check it all out!

Considering how much I rushed through this region, I’m very lucky to have discovered these spots Daniel, and I’m sure there’s plenty more in each part of the Upper Peninsula to explore. Make it Rain: 9 Incredible Spots in the U.S. to Catch the Summer’s Best Meteor Showers

Meteor showers can be seen all over the world, but these locations will maximize the number of meteors you see.

Everything is meditatively still, except the wind and the chirp of crickets as a pinprick of light traveling more than 30,000 miles per hour tears through the quiet. Spotting a meteor on any given night can be a thrill, but there’s a magical quality to sitting under the stars at the peak of a meteor shower as shooting stars appear one after another for hours on end. 

There’s something akin to the feeling of a dopamine rush in the tension of watching these meteor showers. You stare deep into time, waiting for comet debris to crash into Earth’s atmosphere and light up the sky overhead. Unlike the Northern Lights , you don’t necessarily have to travel far to see meteor showers, and they can often be spotted across the U.S. You simply need dark skies and good weather to witness the peak of a meteor shower.

While there’s not a specific “meteor shower season” (some of the best annual displays take place in the winter, including the occasionally bombastic Geminids), the summer and fall are great times to see showers because the weather makes it tolerable to sit outside for hours. 

There are plenty of warm-weather displays left to catch this year. While the Eta Aquariids peak on May 4 into the morning of May 5 (most displays are best seen after midnight on the night of their peak), with the potential to showcase 10 to 30 meteors per hour, the shower is typically visible until around May 28. There’s a dry spell before the Alpha Capricornids peak the night of July 30. This shower doesn’t produce many meteors, but among its scattered streaks, viewers will find bright fireballs. Finally, the last display of the summer is the best of the year, as the Perseids will peak the night of August 12. The moon will set just before midnight, providing perfect conditions until the dawn hours of August 13. The Perseids can unfurl up to 100 meteors per hour during this time. 

While you can see meteor showers under dark skies across the U.S., you can also make an event of it by heading to any of these nine spots that are a perfect setting for stargazing. Wherever you go, get out during this year’s meteor showers to unplug, connect with nature, and find something inspiring. 

Where to See Meteor Showers in the U.S.

Northern minnesota, salt lake city, utah, cherry springs state park in pennsylvania, anza-borrego desert state park in california, dripping springs, texas, michigan’s upper peninsula, beverly shores, indiana, mammoth cave national park in kentucky, big cypress national preserve in florida.

Voyageurs National Park and the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness are both certified International Dark Sky Parks by Dark Sky International . That certification means a park has worked to protect its sky from light pollution, and because of those ongoing efforts, its pristine skies are dark enough to see the Milky Way and other deep-space objects. In northern Minnesota, however, it’s not just these parks that offer a grand view. Other areas around the Superior National Forest and the north shore of Lake Superior may not be certified parks, but are remote enough to escape most light pollution. Additionally, the area is far enough north that there’s a chance of spotting the northern lights, which are likely to appear more frequently in 2024 .

With low population density, gorgeous natural spaces and significant swaths of protected land, southern Utah is a stargazing paradise. (It’s also home to Under Canvas’ Lake Powell – Grand Staircase camping area , the first-ever Dark Sky Lodging .) However, don’t sleep on the area around Salt Lake City in the north. While light pollution overwhelms most meteors around the city, you don’t have to go far to find a sanctuary. Antelope Island State Park, a certified Dark Sky park, is less than an hour from downtown, offering a view into the cosmos, particularly along its western edge, away from the city and looking out across the Great Salt Lake.  Cottonwood Canyon is less than an hour from the city and also serves majestic night sky views. The nearby Solitude Mountain Resort is an accessible hub east of the city and even hosts stargazing programs on-site.

The West’s abundant open spaces are perfect for stargazing. It’s harder to find dark skies in the more heavily populated East. Cherry Springs State Park is an exception, and the park takes stargazing seriously. Astronomy clubs from around the region flock to its Astronomy Field, which has a 360-degree view of the night sky. Situated in the Susquehannock State Forest, Cherry Springs even hosts annual star parties that attract astronomers and space enthusiasts from near and far. While it’s a good drive from Pennsylvania’s biggest cities, more than a few cozy cabins are available through services like Airbnb .

The West is rife with alluring stargazing perches. It’s reasonable to expect that means Idaho, Utah, northern Arizona, western Colorado or Montana, but not southern California. However, just under two hours from San Diego sits the Dark Sky-certified Anza-Borrego State Park. By land area, it’s the second largest state park in the country, about two and a half hours from Los Angeles, traffic gods willing. Part of the Colorado Desert, its stargazing prowess is a beneficiary of its proximity to the Peninsular Ranges of Southern California, which helps keep the skies clear.

Light pollution, which is actually just pollution, is almost impossible to escape. That places like Antelope Island or Cherry Springs exist is impressive because it’s not mere happenstance that dark skies sit overhead. It has taken the persistent dedication of environmentalists to protect the night sky in those locations. Dripping Springs is a special case that demonstrates how monumental the effort can be.  Sitting between Austin and San Antonio, residents of Dripping Springs organized to protect the community from encroaching light pollution. Like other nearby International Dark Sky Communities such as Blanco, 25 miles to the west, Dripping Springs is a small, dark haven amidst a sea of light pollution. There are plenty of places to stay in those metro areas, but Getaway’s secluded and modern tiny cabin campground is less than 30 minutes from both Dripping Springs and Blanco.

The Upper Peninsula’s low population density and lengthy shoreline mean there are dozens of great places for stargazing. One of those is the passionately preserved Beaver Island, which offers some of the darkest skies available in the lower 48. Like northern Minnesota, the UP is far enough north that stargazers not only find a front-row seat to meteor showers, but the aurora can appear from time to time. The UP also houses events like the annual Upper Peninsula Dark Sky Festival at Keweenaw Dark Sky Park and Keweenaw Mountain Lodge . Additionally, the lodge hosts stargazing and northern lights photography events for guests throughout the year.

Beverly Shores is only about an hour from Chicago, so it’s awe-inspiring that it has managed to secure Dark Sky status. Residents have dubbed it “The Island” because it’s bordered by Lake Michigan to the north and Indiana Dunes National Park to the east, south and west. It should be bookmarked by millions because it’s four hours or less from Chicago, Milwaukee, Indianapolis, Madison, Detroit and Toledo. While it’s a day trip from some of those places, there are also charming Airbnb cabins in the city and surrounding area.

Mammoth Cave doesn’t just have access to the largest cave system in the world (not to mention excellent biking paths and gorgeous canoeing along the Green River). The national park is also Dark Sky-certified. From retrofitting outdoor lighting to garnering community support and building a plan for the future, Mammoth Cave went to a lot of work to gain the certification it received in 2021. It paid off. Visitors and residents can now take advantage of its immaculate dark skies as well as its ranger-led stargazing programs .

Big Cypress, which borders the Everglades to the south, managed to get DSI status back in 2016 despite being less than an hour and a half from Miami. It has been impacted by its close proximity to Miami and Naples, but continues to preserve its dark skies for stargazers and, more importantly, its impressively diverse ecosystem. Visitors will frequently find observation events hosted by the South Florida Amateur Astronomers Association at the Big Cypress Swamp Welcome Center.

Five Business Expansions bring 390 New Jobs to Oakland, Wayne, and Delta County

LANSING, Mich. – Today, Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced five business expansion projects in Southeast Michigan and the Upper Peninsula. In total, these projects will represent nearly $40 million in capital investment across Michigan and create 392 jobs across mobility, electric vehicle, and Industry 4.0 industries.  

“Today’s projects will create 392 jobs and drive nearly $40 million of investment in Southeast Michigan and the UP,” said Governor Whitmer . “Since I took office, we have secured 37,000 auto jobs, and our momentum continues to grow. We will keep our foot on the accelerator to lead the future of manufacturing, create good paying jobs for Michiganders, and keep bringing critical supply chains home. Together, we will keep showing the world that Michigan is the best place to live, work, and invest.” 

“Today is a great day indeed, and clearly shows that Team Michigan continues to bring investments to the state driving a diverse economic landscape, ensuring people have access to jobs, helping build vibrant communities, and driving Michigan to be a stronger, more resilient state,” said MEDC Senior Vice President of Regional Development Matt McCauley . “We applaud the commitments from these companies knowing that they can thrive by Making it in Michigan.” 

Autosystems America Inc. Expanding in Novi, Creating 97 Jobs    

Autosystems America Inc ., a division of Magna International, plans to expand in the city of Novi , where it will establish its Center of Excellence for Lighting. 

“The investment made by Autosystems America into our community is fantastic news. With this $2.45 million investment, along with the $600,000 grant made by the state, we will be able to create 97 high-paying jobs. With the establishment of the Center of Excellence for Lighting, we will be able to ensure that our roads are safer by providing greater visibility while driving at night, which is especially crucial for thousands of hard-working Michiganders,” said state Representative Matt Koleszar (D-Plymouth). 

The expansion in Novi will provide additional space at the company’s existing manufacturing facility to house Magna’s Center of Excellence for Lighting, where it will add engineering and testing labs. The project is expected to generate a total capital investment of $2.45 million and create 97 high-wage jobs with the support of a $600,000 Michigan Business Development Program performance-based grant. Michigan was chosen for the project over another competing site in North America due to the company’s strong presence and existing talent base in the state.

Cosma Body Assembly Michigan expanding in Lyon Township, Creating 166 Jobs    

Marada Industries Inc. dba Cosma Body Assembly Michigan (CBAM), a subsidiary of Magna International, is constructing an expansion at its manufacturing facility in Lyon Township . 

CBAM has recently received new business with an existing customer and plans to construct a 123,296-square-foot expansion, which will provide the space required to manufacture front and rear underbody structural rails, front and rear assemblies, mid-rail assemblies, rail cover assemblies, wheelhouse assembly, spot welding, projection welding, and highly automated robotic assembly.  

The project is expected to generate a total capital investment of $35.2 million and create 166 jobs with the support of an $830,000 Michigan Business Development Program performance-based grant. Michigan was chosen for the project over a competing site in the south due to the company’s strong presence and existing talent base in the state. 

Lyon Township has offered space at the township hall to be used for future job fairs to assist the company in finding candidates for the newly created positions. Information on careers with Cosma Body Assembly Michigan can be found here.  

Magna New Mobility USA, Establishing New R&D Facility in Troy, Creating 100 Jobs    

Magna New Mobility USA, Inc., a division of Magna Services of America, Inc. and Magna Steyr USA Inc. are establishing a new R&D facility with office space in the city of Troy.   

“I am thrilled to see this investment in Troy,” said state Representative Sharon MacDonell (D-Troy). “The combination of a $1.2 million investment, plus a $1 million grant from the state, will help create 100 good-paying jobs. The research conducted at the new facility will only continue to grow in importance — especially as we build more and more self-driving cars. This investment will help keep Michigan at the heart of the automotive industry and make Troy one of its most important centers.” 

The facility will comprise manufacturing and laboratory space as well as administrative offices. The project is expected to generate a total capital investment of $1.2 million and create 100 jobs with the support of a $1 million Michigan Business Development Program performance-based grant. Due to the company’s significant presence and strong talent base in Michigan, the company chose to establish their facility here as opposed to a competing site in North America. 

"Magna's commitment to expanding its footprint in Troy, Lyon Township, and Novi is such welcome news for Oakland County," said Oakland County Executive Dave Coulter . "And the company's investments in the vital areas of electric vehicles, research and development and production reinforces the region's standing as the premier location for the mobility industry of the future." 

Magna utilizes Michigan Works! to reach local talent and offers its employees full benefits and paths for advancement or transfers to new positions within the organization. The project supports the state’s efforts to position Michigan as the global leader in future mobility and advanced automotive manufacturing and will bring immediate good jobs with a large employer.

Motis LLC, dba Racer Ramps Relocating its California operations to Escanaba, Creating 9 Jobs  

Motis LLC, dba Race Ramps , founded in Escanaba in 2004, plans to bring its Southern California operations to Escanaba and establish a specialty manufacturing center of excellence.  

Race Ramps was acquired by Motis, a producer of a wide range of products for the powersport, medical, recreational, commercial, transportation, military, and industry markets, in 2019. Since then, Race Ramps has nearly doubled its revenue, with 25 Michiganders currently employed in Escanaba. 

The new facility will use advanced polyurethane materials to form various hoses and cords that are used to protect equipment that transports liquids and electricity. The materials used are entirely domestically sourced, resulting in a 100-percent U.S.-produced product. 

“The MEDC’s support of an expansion project for Motis, LLC (Race Ramps) continues to put the spotlight on the area’s manufacturing capabilities,” said Ed Legault, Executive Director, Delta County Economic Development Alliance . “The $75,000 grant provides significant investment into a strategy that will help create a specialized manufacturing center of excellence in Escanaba. The grant supporting the expansion will create nine new jobs at the Race Ramps Escanaba facility.” 

The project is expected to generate a total capital investment of $675,000 and create up to nine jobs with the support of a $75,000 Micro Michigan Business Development Program performance-based grant. The company chose Michigan for the project over a competing site in Wisconsin because of the strength of Michigan’s workforce. 

“Motis is extremely proud of the work that is being done in our Escanaba facility. The Race Ramps branded products produced in that facility are known all over the world as a premium product for automobile displaying, storage and transport,” said Kurt Kappeler, Chief Financial Officer, Motis Brands . “We are excited to partner with the MEDC to invest in that facility to expand into the production of our Elasco branded products. The investment from the MEDC will be used for building improvements and the purchase of state-of-the-art high pressure molding equipment.”   

Race Ramps supports the personal growth of its employees with additional training opportunities and full benefits. The project will bring advanced manufacturing jobs to the region and will solidify the company’s presence and future business in the state.

SkillReal LTD, Establishing U.S. Headquarters in Livonia, Creating 20 Jobs    

SkillReal LTD , headquartered in Israel, is an engineering, research, and development company that is successfully reducing the gap between virtual and physical manufacturing operations by offering Digital Twin Alignment (DTA) inspection technologies. This technology is the first of its kind and offers manufacturing companies a safe and convenient inspection system to support its processes, shortening production times and offering efficiencies from design through production.

The company has chosen a facility in Livonia, Wayne County to establish its U.S. Headquarters, and allow the company to service more customers and offer closer proximity to existing U.S. customers. This investment is anticipated to result in a capital investment of up to $420,000 and the creation of 20 new jobs with an average wage of $76.20 per hour plus benefits, compared to the regional media wage of $23.26 per hour. This investment comes with MSF support in the form of a Michigan Business Development Program performance-based grant in the amount of $420,000. 

The company chose Michigan over a competing site in Austin, Texas for its U.S. Headquarters due to the concentrated presence of OEMs and Tier One suppliers in Detroit and the surrounding areas.
