Tom Cruise and Mimi Rogers's Relationship Timeline: A Look Back

Tom Cruise and Mimi Rogers met in 1985 before tying the knot in 1987.

ICYMI — or are just having a hard time remembering — Oscar-nominated actor Tom Cruise and actress Mimi Rogers dated in Cruise's  post-Cher  and pre- Nicole Kidman  days. The pair met in 1985 — although how, exactly, is up for debate — and married in 1987, marking a first for Cruise and the second marriage for Rogers. The pair later finalized their divorce in 1990.

During the course of their relationship, the  Risky Business  star and  The Rapture  starlet spoke highly of each other when giving interviews and confidently stepped out in public as each other's arm candy (not everyone can pull off T-shirts tucked into Bermuda shorts with ease). However, as with any couple, Cruise and Rogers had their ups and downs. Throw in the pressures of Hollywood, and it would eventually prove all too much for the actors.

Here's a look back at Tom Cruise and Mimi Rogers's relationship.

1985: Tom Cruise and Mimi Rogers first meet

In 1986, Cruise, then 23,  told  Rolling Stone  he'd met Rogers, then 29, "at a dinner party about a year ago" when he was developing the original  Top Gun .  However, the courtship wasn't  quite  as simple as a young Cruise introducing himself and asking to date Rogers. The actor said Rogers "was dating a friend" at the time. 

"I thought she was extremely bright," Cruise recalled to the publication.

Rogers remembered things differently,  telling  Sun Sentinel   that she and Cruise had been introduced by mutual friends. 

"I wasn't seeing anybody, he wasn't seeing anybody, and they thought, 'These people should be going out with somebody — let's see if they want to go out with each other,'" Rogers told the newspaper. "And we said, 'Aw, what the heck. OK.'"

May 9, 1987: Tom Cruise and Mimi Rogers get married

The idea of marriage was introduced quickly, but given the magnitude of Cruise's stardom following the success of the blockbuster Top Gun  , the couple referred to their wedding by an ominous title: "The Project." Rogers, a second-generation Scientologist herself, is believed to have been one of Cruise's first links to the polarizing belief system.

In May 1987, Cruise and Rogers executed their, uh, project and tied the knot,  according to  People .  The Mighty Ducks  actor Emilio Estevez was Cruise's best man at the "very small, intimate and beautiful" event. Interestingly, nearly one year before Cruise and Rogers wed, he told  Rolling Stone,  "I don't know if I could get married."

Rogers spoke fondly of Cruise in their years together. "There's a lot of contentment and security (in marriage)," she  told  Chicago Tribune  in 1988. "I highly recommend it.''

December 9, 1989: Tom Cruise files for divorce from Mimi Rogers

According to Andrew Morton's  Tom Cruise: An Unauthorized Biography , the actor filed for divorce on Dec. 9, 1989. Production on  Days of Thunder  (starring Cruise and his future wife, Kidman) began just two days later. In 1995, Cruise  described to  Vanity Fair  his reaction to meeting Kidman as "instant lust." 

Morton cited a statement made by Cruise and Rogers to address the announcement of their split in January 1990: "While there have been positive aspects to our marriage, there were some issues which could not be resolved even after working on them for a period of time." 

Ironically, just days before news of Cruise and Rogers's split broke, the  Rain Man  star insisted that (despite tabloid conjecture) he "couldn't imagine being without" his then-wife. "Since I've been with her, it's opened me up a lot," he  revealed to  Rolling Stone  in 1990. "I think it's helped me be a better actor. We live a lot of life together. We share everything. That's the best thing about life. Otherwise, you go through it pretty sad and lonely and angry." At the risk of laying it on too thick, Cruise added, "I care about my wife more than anything in the world. She's my best friend. I just really like being with her, you know? I love her."

February 1990: Tom Cruise and Mimi Rogers finalize divorce

After finalizing his divorce from Rogers in February 1990, Cruise and Kidman reportedly wed in December. The actor  told Barbara Walters  in 1992 that he and his ex hadn't spoken "in a couple of years," though he did "wish her well." 

In 1993, the  Bosch  star spoke to  Playboy ,  per E! Online , and made some interesting comments about her ex. "Here's the real story," she reportedly told the publication. "Tom was seriously thinking of becoming a monk. At least for that period of time, it looked as though marriage wouldn't fit into his overall spiritual need. And he thought he had to be celibate to maintain the purity of his instrument." She also mentioned that her own instrument "needed tuning." 

Rogers was candid about the trouble of being married to one of the most famous men in the world. 

"You cease to be an individual," she  told  People  in 1995. "No matter what the article is, it's 'Tom Cruise's wife ...'" Rogers added that she was waiting for the moment when she didn't "have to talk about that [blankety-blank] name anymore."

Though, in 2001, she  explained to  The Telegraph  that "stardom wasn't really a problem" in their marriage. "What did annoy me was the age thing," she added. "Every six months, [the press] seemed to add another year to my age. If we were still married, the press would have me in my 60s by now."

Tom Cruise and Mimi Rogers have varying accounts about how they met. Cruise insists they met at a dinner party while he was developing "Top Gun," whereas Rogers stated that the two were set up by mutual friends. "I wasn't seeing anybody, he wasn't seeing anybody, and they thought, 'These people should be going out with somebody — let's see if they want to go out with each other ... And we said, 'Aw, what the heck'" (via the  Sun Sentinel ). Regardless of how they were actually introduced, Cruise and Rogers hit it off almost immediately.

The two discussed the idea of marriage pretty early on in their relationship, and it's widely believed that Rogers is the one who initially introduced Cruise to Scientology (via E! ). They decided to wed in secret in May 1987 to avoid the onslaught of press and media attention they had been garnering since making their public debut. Reportedly, the only two people in attendance at the wedding were Cruise's mother and his best man, Emilio Estevez (via Entertainment Weekly ). Though it seemed like the pair were well matched, they eventually parted ways three years later in 1990.

The pair tells very different tales about their split

The media speculation surrounding Tom Cruise's divorce from Mimi Rogers in 1990 was as wild as you'd imagine. There were rumors that Rogers was jealous of Cruise's stardom, that perhaps their six-year age gap was too substantial, or that Rogers had grown tired of constantly being referred to as "Tom Cruise's Wife" in the press (via Entertainment Weekly ). Since Cruise never offered any insight as to what his perspective was on the divorce, the actual cause is down to mere speculation.

When announcing their divorce, the two released a statement that was more confusing than it was clarifying, saying, "While there have been positive aspects to our marriage, there were some issues which could not be resolved even after working on them for a period of time" (via InStyle ). This was seemingly the end of the matter, until Rogers gave an interview to Playboy in 1993 where she stated that the reason for their divorce was rooted in Cruise's desire to become a monk. "Well, here's the real story. Tom was seriously thinking of becoming a monk. At least for that period of time, it looked as though marriage wouldn't fit into his overall spiritual need" (via E! ). Whether Cruise was really considering the prospect of becoming a monk or these two just wanted different things, the mystery will seemingly remain unsolved.

The short, ill-fated marriage of Tom Cruise and Mimi Rogers

The proceedings were more covert than a Stanley Kubrick shoot. On May 9, 1987, in a small, upstate New York ceremony, 24-year-old Tom Cruise quietly exchanged nuptial vows with Mimi Rogers, an actress six years his senior. Present were the actor’s mother, Mary Lee Mapother, and best man Emilio Estevez. Even Cruise’s publicist was reportedly kept in the dark.

The secrecy gave the couple just what they wanted: sanctuary from the hungry press. After all, Cruise had broken from his (Brat) Pack brethren with the 1986 one-two of Top Gun and The Color of Money . Rogers, the ex-wife of Scientologist Jim Rogers, was better known for her men than for her movies: Tabloids had linked her with Tom Selleck, Christopher Reeve, and Kennedy kinsman Robert Shriver.

Cruise, on the other hand, led a very private personal life, having had only one high-profile love affair (with Risky Business costar Rebecca De Mornay). ”She took him under her wing,” Wensley Clarkson, author of Tom Cruise Unauthorized , told EW last year. And despite the age disparity, the pair certainly had something in common when it came to their shared religion: Scientology. But in the end, the union proved an impossible mission. On Jan. 16, 1990, the couple announced their impending divorce. (What’s more, Rogers today claims she is no longer a practicing Scientologist.)

”I think he outgrew her,” said Clarkson of the split. Cruise’s career had exploded with Rain Man (1988) and Born on the Fourth of July (1989). But the media had other theories: The couple was childless, and rumors about Cruise’s fertility ran rampant. It didn’t help when Rogers joked in a 1993 Playboy interview that ”Tom was seriously thinking of becoming a monk…he thought he had to be celibate to maintain the purity of his instrument.” Her own instrument, she added, ”needed tuning.”

Since then, neither party has seemed eager to revisit the past. And with his recently scuttled marriage to Nicole Kidman (with whom he adopted two children, Isabella, 8, and Connor, 6), Cruise has more pressing things to worry about. Rogers has kept busy as well, turning up in Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery and on TV’s The X-Files . She’s also juggling a new movie for Showtime ( Charms for the Easy Life , which she is also executive-producing); a long-term relationship with Chris Ciaffa, which has yielded a daughter, Lucy, 6; and a production company.

As for the honor of being the first Mrs. Cruise, Rogers said in a 1995 PEOPLE story: ”[I’m] waiting for the moment when I don’t have to talk about that [blankety-blank] name anymore.”

All three of Tom Cruise's marriages ended when wife was 33

Soon after news broke about Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes' plans to divorce , fans noted a weird coincidence. All of Cruise's three marriages broke up when his wife at the time was 33, and ended when she was 34.

Cruise's first wife was Mimi Rogers, who was 31 when she wed 24-year-old Cruise in May 1987 and 33 when they broke up in 1990.

Cruise then married Nicole Kidman, 23, in December of 1990, and then separated in 2001, when Kidman was 33.

Holmes, 28, and Cruise wed in 2006, seven months after daughter Suri was born. And when word came Friday that Holmes had filed for divorce, those with a sense of Cruise history noted that Holmes was also 33.

Divorces, in each case, came when the woman in question had turned 34 (or so we assume with Holmes, who will turn 34 in December).

The coincidence didn't go unnoticed on social media, where no weird fact is too small to escape notice.

"How weird is it that Tom Cruise's three failed marriages have all ended while the women were 34?" tweeted Karen D'Souza. Others tried to find a connection between the number 33 and Cruise's well-publicized Scientology faith.

And others had fun with a different numerical aspect of the Cruise-Holmes marriage. Wrote Adolf McGough, "Shoutout to Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise. Your marriage lasted 28.47 Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries marriages."

We Finally Know Why Tom Cruise And Mimi Rogers Divorced

Tom Cruise is one of Hollywood's wealthiest and most successful actors ( his estimated net worth is a cool $600 million!) but there's a real shady side to the "Top Gun" superstar. In addition to a number of disturbing things many choose to ignore about his life today , Cruise has also made plenty of headlines with his tumultuous love life. To date, he's been married and divorced three times, has dated a slew of celebs, and, well, what his exes have to say about him isn't always the most flattering.

Case in point: The actor's first wife, Mimi Rogers, didn't mince words when she announced she was sick and tired of being asked about her ex. In 1995, she told People she was "waiting for the moment when I don't have to talk about that [blankety-blank] name anymore." Then, in 2006, she told Today  she was still getting questions about Cruise, despite being happily married to producer Chris Ciaffa. "I've had two kids since then, I can barely remember my own name let alone be remembering something almost seventeen years ago," she quipped. It's clear Rogers never really pined over Cruise after their divorce, and that may be because she knew it was for the best. Here's the real reason why Tom Cruise and Mimi Rogers called it quits.

Their different stories on how they met

Tom Cruise and Mimi Rogers first got together between 1985 and 1986. The young "Top Gun" actor confirmed they were an item in a Rolling Stone interview published that June. A whirlwind romance ensued and they married within a year , but while they agreed they loved each other, they couldn't get on the same page with their meet cute. According to Cruise, they met at a dinner party in 1985 and, as he told the mag, she wasn't immediately available. "She was dating a friend, and, uh, I thought she was extremely bright," he said. 

However, that's not how Rogers remembered it. Speaking with an Us Weekly reporter in 1987, she echoed the fact that they met at a dinner party, but she told the outlet she was single and that mutual friends pushed them together. "I wasn't seeing anybody, he wasn't seeing anybody, and they thought, 'These people should be going out with somebody. Let's see if they want to go out with each other,'" she recalled (via the South Florida Sun Sentinel ). "And we said, 'Aw, what the heck. Okay.'"

According to Rogers, it just felt right and they were soon talking of marriage, despite their age difference (she was 32 and he was 24 when they tied the knot) and Cruise's exploding popularity. Noting that he was "famous, but not crazy famous" when they first met, Rogers shared, "When I saw 'Top Gun' the first time, I knew what we were in for."

Tom Cruise didn't initially want to get married

Tom Cruise and Mimi Rogers married on May 9, 1987, in what she called a "very small, very private, and completely normal" ceremony (per Us Weekly, via the South Florida Sun Sentinel ). According to People , the Unitarian nuptials took place in upstate New York with fellow actor Emilio Estévez serving as best man. As the outlet reported, the couple was so adamant about keeping it private that even Cruise's publicist wasn't aware of the wedding. Rogers, who was previously married to Scientology counselor Jim Rogers, per the Chicago Tribune , loved the idea of marriage. She told the outlet in 1988, "There's a lot of contentment and security [in marriage]. I highly recommend it.”

However, Cruise wasn't so sure. The actor spoke with Rolling Stone in 1986, less than a year before saying "I do," and confessed he wasn't sure he'd ever walk down the aisle. "I don't know if I could get married," he said. "Right now, in my present state of mind, I don't believe so. I need a lot of space for myself and my work," he explained. Rogers clearly changed his mind, but he again spoke of his uncertainty about marriage with Rolling Stone in 1990. Recalling his parents' divorce when he was 12 , the actor shared, "My worries were 'Jesus, am I going to be faithful? Does marriage work as a concept?' I really never thought it could," he admitted.

Tom Cruise and Mimi Rogers appeared to be going strong

Following their 1987 wedding, a 32-year-old Mimi Rogers and 24-year-old Tom Cruise appeared to be going strong. As she told the Chicago Tribune in 1988, they were living in lower Manhattan and focusing on their careers and each other, and doing their best to live a normal life. ”We go to the movies, we go out to dinner, and we never, never have a problem,” she told the mag. ”We're not real provocative. We don't inspire cloak-and-dagger tactics.”

As for Cruise, despite his initial trepidations regarding marriage, he also seemed to enjoy being a husband. The star told Rolling Stone in 1990 that he and Rogers always visited each other on set and offered unconditional support to one another. "I couldn't imagine being without her or being alone," he gushed. He even gave her credit for his emotional "Born on the Fourth of July" performance, saying, "I wouldn't have been able to make it through 'Born,' I don't think, without her being there." 

What's more, when asked about his romantic past, Cruise told the mag he had never been in love before Rogers and that meeting her changed everything. "Since I've been with her, it's opened me up a lot. I think it's helped me be a better actor," he said. It also made him a better man. Confessing he had been lonely and angry as a single guy, he enthused, "I care about my wife more than anything in the world. She's my best friend. I just really like being with her, you know? I love her."

Fame was an issue — sort of

Tom Cruise and Mimi Rogers announced their divorce on January 16, 1990, per Entertainment Weekly , and speculation about the reason was rampant. Perhaps fame was an issue. Recalling her first brush with Cruise's superstardom, Rogers told the  Chicago Tribune that attending the 1986 premiere of ”The Color of Money" as his girlfriend was wild. ”There were 10 million photographers, all going mad, pushing and shoving, trying to get a picture of Tom and Paul Newman and Marty Scorsese," she said. "I was just madly trying to get out of the way.”

She did have specific concerns. Just three months after their wedding, she told Us Weekly (via the  South Florida Sun-Sentinel ), "If there was anything that I was fearful would happen, it would be hearing somebody say, 'Gosh, we're really interested in Mimi for this movie and, man, Tom would really be great in the lead.'" She was adamant that her career stay separate from her husband's and believed she deserved to be treated as an actor in her own right. "Even the thought of having to deal with it is humiliating," she said of co-starring with Cruise. 

It's a sentiment the actor reiterated in 1995, telling People that when you're with an A-lister, "You cease to be an individual." Even so, Rogers later told The Telegraph in 2001, "The stardom wasn't really a problem. What did annoy me was the age thing. Some of the tabloids brought it up all the time, and exaggerated the gap between Tom and me."

Religion brought them together, then drove them apart

Tom Cruise may be the most well-known Scientologist in the world, but it was actually Mimi Rogers who introduced him to the religion. As The Hollywood Reporter noted, Rogers' father was an avid member and so was she. According to The Daily Beast , she shared her religion with Cruise and brought him to his first meetings at a Scientology center in Hollywood. However, the church played a role in their demise as a couple, according to Marty Rathbun. Vanity Fair dubbed Rathbun "Scientology's former inspector general and No. 2." He confessed to helping break up Rogers and Cruise, and later, Cruise and Nicole Kidman. "Both women got cold on [Scientology head David] Miscavige. He was integral to the breakup of the marriages." Indeed, it was reported that Rogers has since left Scientology .

However, as Rogers tells it, it was a different religion that drove them apart. Speaking with Playboy in 1993 (via E! News ), she said, "Tom was seriously thinking of becoming a monk. At least for that period of time, it looked as though marriage wouldn't fit into his overall spiritual need." She also quipped, "He thought he had to be celibate to maintain the purity of his instrument," cheekily adding: "My instrument needed tuning." (Per  The Telegraph , Rogers felt that her words were not correctly interpreted in that Playboy interview.) 

Rolling Stone previously reported that Cruise had attended a Catholic seminary during high school but didn't take the path seriously. "Even at that age, I was too interested in ladies," he said.

Did Tom Cruise outgrow his first wife?

Fame, religion, age — these were all blamed for Tom Cruise and Mimi Rogers' divorce, but according to two authors who wrote unauthorized biographies about Cruise, none of those were the true cause of the split. Wensley Clarkson, who wrote " Tom Cruise: Unauthorized ," told Entertainment Weekly that he believes they simply matured in different directions. "I think he outgrew her," Clarkson speculated. 

Andrew Morton, who penned " Tom Cruise: An Unauthorized Biography ," made a similar case, quoting an interview with Talk magazine in which Cruise shared, "It was just two people who weren't meant to work and it wasn't what I wanted for my life. I think you just go on different paths, but it wasn't Mimi's fault. ... It's just the way it is." Morton also cited a statement made by the couple after their split in which they appeared to imply they had tried their best but it just wasn't meant to be. "While there have been positive aspects to our marriage, there were some issues which could not be resolved even after working on them for a period of time," they said in a joint release.

That notion appears to be in keeping with what Cruise told Barbara Walters in 1992 when he didn't blame the age difference for his split from Rogers. Rather, he'd learned he wanted something else out of a relationship, but there were no hard feelings. "I wish her well," he shared. "I wish her great success and happiness."

Nicole Kidman's alleged role in Cruise and Rogers' divorce

Tom Cruise met his second wife, Nicole Kidman , on the set of 1990's " Days of Thunder " while he was still married to Mimi Rogers. They were instantly drawn to each other and weren't shy about telling Vanity Fair in 1995 it was a sexual connection. "I thought he was the sexiest man I'd ever seen in my life, so it started on lust," Kidman gushed while Cruise added, "Instant lust, that's what I felt. I thought she was amazingly sexy and stunning."

According to Andrew Morton's "Tom Cruise: An Unauthorized Biography,"  that connection was the catalyst for Cruise leaving Rogers. "On December 9, 1989, with filming for 'Days of Thunder' in full swing, Tom's lawyers quietly filed a suit for his legal separation from Mimi," Morton wrote. However, the public didn't learn about the split until over a month later, and that was on purpose. As journalist Richard Corliss, who interviewed Cruise at the time, explained in Morton's book, "His marriage to Mimi Rogers was a fiction he wanted to maintain — at least until the magazine profiles attending the release of 'Born on the Fourth of July' were published."

In the end, Cruise's divorce from Rogers was finalized in February 1990, per Us Weekly , and he married Kidman in December 1990. As he told Vanity Fair, he had zero doubts. "I knew she was it for me," he enthused, adding, "I thought, 'This is the person to be able to share all of who I am with, and her with me.'"

Mimi Rogers has moved on from Tom Cruise but can't escape him

Following their divorce, Tom Cruise didn't waste any time moving on. As soon as he and Mimi Rogers had officially split in 1990, he tied the knot with Nicole Kidman that same year and the two remained together until 2001. He then found love again and gave marriage a third try with Katie Holmes from 2006 to 2012. As for Rogers, it took her a little longer to meet her new beau — producer Chris Ciaffa — but the pairing proved to be a lasting one. They married in 2003, per InStyle , had two kids (Lucy and Charlie) and, as of September 2022, are still happily married.  

Clearly, both exes have moved on from one another, but even so, Rogers hasn't been able to fully escape her past. That's because, as she told Today in 2006, despite being divorced for decades, she was still being asked about Cruise. Although she was, as she quipped, "I'm one ex-wife removed," reporters simply couldn't resist asking her questions about the actor's personal life, and she wasn't exactly appreciative. As she told the outlet, not only was she not interested in the topic, but she also wasn't exactly qualified to share an opinion on the matter. "Any time anything happens with him I get a call: 'What do you think of Katie? What do [you] think about this?' [...] 'Do you think he'll be a good father?'" she mused, slamming, "How do I know any more than I would know what kind of parent you would be?"

Tom Cruise and Mimi Rogers tied the knot in 1987 and stayed married for three years before separating. While they cited unresolved issues as the reason for their split, Mimi made a shocking revelation three years later.

American actor and producer Tom Cruise's first marriage to actress Mimi Rogers made headlines while it lasted. During an interview with Rolling Stone in 1986, Cruise narrated his first encounter with his former wife.

While speaking , Cruise made it known that he first met Mimi at a dinner party in 1985 while developing "Top Gun." According to the actor, his former wife was dating a friend of his, but it didn't stop them from getting together.

While Cruise claimed to have met Mimi during a dinner party, the latter seemed to remember things differently. Mimi had a chat with the Sun-Sentinel in 1987 and revealed that she and her ex-husband were introduced to each other through mutual friends.

During their relationship, the pair discussed various topics, including marriage. Reports also revealed that Cruise was introduced into Scientology by his ex-wife, as she was previously married to Scientologist Jim Rogers.

The duo eventually walked down the aisle on May 9, 1987, in New York. It was alleged that only two people were in attendance— Emilio Estevez, Cruise's brother and best man, and the actor's mother. Cruise and Mimi enjoyed marital bliss for three years before calling it quits in 1990.

According to Mimi, it looked like marriage was not soothing to Cruise's spiritual needs.

Before their separation, Cruise had spoken candidly about his relationship with Mimi. Cruise said he had never been in love, and being married to Mimi opened him up to many things. Their marriage made him a better actor, and he had nothing but love for her.

He further explained that they shared everything, and he cared about Mimi more than anything in the world. He also described Mimi as his best friend, with whom he loved spending time. Despite his claims, the marriage ended a few months later.

In a statement, the pair revealed that they separated based on certain unresolved issues. The public believed the revelation until Mimi opened up during a 1993 interview with Playboy, leaving everyone amazed.

While speaking to the outlet, Mimi narrated that the major reason behind her divorce from Cruise was that the latter was thinking of becoming a monk when they were married. According to Mimi, it looked like marriage was not soothing to Cruise's spiritual needs.

The Full Body Massage actress Mimi Rogers has been married three times. 

Even though Rogers was born Miriam Spickler and adopted her widely used the last name from her first husband, Jim Rogers. 

She was married to the Scientologist in 1976. Rogers and Jim divorced in1980. And even though their marriage lasted for four years, it remains an obscure tale.

However, her second marriage was totally opposite to the first one. It was so high profile even the couple referred to their wedding by an ominous title: “The Project.”

Mimi Rogers and Ex-husband Tom Cruise’s Marriage

In a 1986 Rolling Stone interview , Tom Cruise said he’d met Rogers at a dinner party when he was developing Top Gun .

Cruise said Rogers was dating a friend at the time. But she recalls it differently. In 1987 she told the Sun-Sentinel that she was introduced to Cruise by mutual friends.

The couple was open to the idea of marriage early in their relationship. But due to Cruise’s post- Top Gun  stardom, it had to be an extremely small, intimate event.

In the spring of 1987, Rogers and Cruise tied the knot , and Emilio Estevez was the best man.

Rogers and Cruise both spoke fondly about each other during their relationship. As reported by the Chicago Tribune, she said, “There’s a lot of contentment and security (in marriage).”

In another Rolling Stone interview, which ironically came out a few days before the pair announced their split in 1990, the Mission Impossible star said, “I care about my wife more than anything in the world. She’s my best friend. I just really like being with her, you know? I love her.”

According to Andrew Morton’s Tom Cruise An Unauthorized Biography , Cruise filed for divorce on December 9, 1989. 

It was just two days before he started filming Days of Thunder with his future wife, Nicole Kidman. The actor even described his first impression of Kidman as “Instant lust.”

On January 17, 1990, the couple released a joint statement about their split which said, “While there have been very positive aspects to our marriage, there were some issues which could not be resolved even after working on them for a period of time.”

Rogers made interesting comments about her ex-husband during her 1993 interview with Playboy, “Tom was seriously thinking of becoming a monk.”

She spoke out about losing her individuality while being married to one of the most famous men in the world. She disliked being recognized as Tom Cruise’s wife or his ex-wife. 

And she was annoyed when the press asked her questions if there was any news about her ex. “Any time anything happens with him I get a call,” she said in 2006.

They dated for 13 years after they got together in May 1990. On March 20, 2003, Rogers and Ciaffa were married at the Beverly Hills courthouse. 

The actress has been together for 32 years with her current spouse.

The couple has two children, daughter Lucy Julia Rogers-Ciaffa, 26, and son Charlie Rogers-Ciaffa, 20.

Lucy has followed in her parents’ footsteps. She’s known for her roles in Penny Dreadful and has also tried directing a short film, Reality Zest.

As for Charlie, he’s attending Arizona State University. While he attended Brentwood, the coronavirus outbreak cut his athletic career short. He played baseball, basketball, and track.

During her marriage to Tom Cruise, Mimi Rogers was annoyed with one particular way the media would report on them.

Tom Cruise has walked down the aisle a few times in his lifetime. He has been married to Nicole Kidman, which resulted in the two sharing the screen together more than once. He was also married to Katie Holmes , which spawned strange rumors regarding the Church of Scientology's role in the marriage.

However, before those high-profiled marriages made headlines, Cruise was married to Mimi Rogers. The actress was married to Cruise for a short period on the late 80s before their union also ended in divorce. Years after their split, she would talk openly about their marriage and why it ended.

Mimi Rogers May Have Been Tom Cruise's Introduction To Scientology

According to Cruise, he first met Rogers in 1985 when he was developing the original Top Gun . Cruise told Rolling Stone in a 1986 interview that he met Rogers "at a dinner party about a year ago." Cruise also revealed that Rogers "was dating a friend" at the time they first met.

"I thought she was extremely bright," Cruise said.

However, Rogers has said that she wasn't dating anybody at the time. She told Sun Sentinel that she and Cruise were introduced through mutual friends.

"I wasn't seeing anybody, he wasn't seeing anybody, and they thought, 'These people should be going out with somebody — let's see if they want to go out with each other,'" Rogers said. "And we said, 'Aw, what the heck. OK.'"

The couple were married two years later on May 9, 1987. The two referred to their marriage as "The Project" and Rogers, a second-generation Scientologist, is believed to have been Cruise's introduction to the religion.

Years later, Cruise was rumored to be in talks with the Church of Scientology regarding his search for a wife following his divorce from both Rogers and Nicole Kidman.

Several famous actresses were rumored to have been considered for the lofty role. However, the church seemed to get the answers to their prayers when they came across an article in Seventeen .

In a 2004 interview , Katie Holmes said, "I used to think that I was going to marry Tom Cruise." At the time, she was engaged to actor Chris Klein.

It was a mere six months after that article came out that Klein and Holmes announced their split. Just one month after than announcement, Holmes and Cruise made their red carpet debut as a couple in Rome.

Many find the timing of the former couple's courtship to be highly suspicious.

People reported that Emilio Estevez was Cruise's best man at his "very small, intimate and beautiful" wedding to Rogers. Nearly one year before tying the knot, however, Cruise told Rolling Stone , "I don't know if I could get married."

Rogers spoke fondly of married life at the time.

"There's a lot of contentment and security (in marriage)," she told the Chicago Tribune in 1988. "I highly recommend it."

Tom Reportedly Married Nicole Kidman The Same Year He Divorced Mimi Rogers

According to an unauthorized biography on Cruise by author Andrew Morton, the actor filed for divorce from Rogers on December 9, 1989. Just two days later, Cruise began production on Days of Thunder with his future wife Nicole Kidman. Cruise would later tell Vanity Fair in 1995 that meeting Kidman for the first time was "instant lust."

In 1990, Cruise and Rogers made an official statement regarding the end of their marriage.

"While there have been positive aspects to our marriage, there were some issues which could not be resolved even after working on them for a period of time," they said.

Despite this, Cruise told Rolling Stone that he "couldn't imagine being without" Rogers just days before news of their split broke.

"Since I've been with her, it's opened me up a lot," Cruise said. "I think it's helped me be a better actor. We live a lot of life together. We share everything. That's the best thing about life. Otherwise, you go through it pretty sad and lonely and angry."

He added, "I care about my wife more than anything in the world. She's my best friend. I just really like being with her, you know? I love her."

The couple finalized their divorce in February 1990. Cruise and Kidman were reportedly married that December. Cruise later told Barbara Walters in 1992 that he had not spoken to Rogers "in a couple of years" and that he did "wish her well."

Mimi Said She Didn't Like The Media's Focus On Their Age Gap During The Marriage

Rogers spoke to Playboy in 1993 and allegedly opened up about the real reason for her split from Cruise.

"Here's the real story," she reportedly said. "Tom was seriously thinking of becoming a monk. At least for that period of time, it looked as though marriage wouldn't fit into his overall spiritual need. And he thought he had to be celibate to maintain the purity of his instrument."

Rogers also said that her own instrument "needed tuning."

In 1995, she told People that it was difficult being married to one of the most famous actors in Hollywood.

"You cease to be an individual," she said. "No matter what the article is, it's 'Tom Cruise's wife ..." Rogers added that she was awaiting the day when she didn't "have to talk about that [blankety-blank] name anymore."

She did, however, keep talking in 2001, when she told The Telegraph that "stardom wasn't really a problem" in their marriage.

Rogers did say that she wasn't fond of the media's focus on their age gap, despite Rogers being only six years older than Cruise.

"What did annoy me was the age thing," Rogers told the outlet. "Every six months, [the press] seemed to add another year to my age. If we were still married, the press would have me in my 60s by now."

Katie Holmes wasn’t the first actress to be called Mrs. Tom Cruise .

From 1987-1990, Mimi Rogers was married to the Risky Business actor, 50; it was the actress’ second marriage and Cruise’s first.

At the premiere of Hope Springs in New York City August 6, Rogers opened up to Us Weekly about Cruise’s recent split with his third wife, Katie Holmes , 33. “I wish them both the best. There’s not much else to say. I really do, though,” Rogers, 56, said. She then reiterated, “I wish them the best.”

In December, a different Us Weekly source claimed that Cruise introduced his adult children Isabella, 30, and Connor, 28, from his marriage to Kidman, to Khayrova. (Cruise reportedly has no relationship with daughter, Suri, 17, from his marriage to Holmes.) Isabella and Connor apparently gave their stamp of approval because they “are so happy to see that their dad has love in his life again.” After he was blindsided by Holmes in 2012, the insider shared that the Top Gun star took a step back from his love life. “He wanted to take his time and not rush into any relationships just for the sake of it,” they said. And it seems like Khayrova is the perfect fit after putting his love life on the back burner. 

She had her own acrimonious divorce from Dmitry Tsetkov in 2022 which captivated international headlines for the astonishing amount of money they were fighting over. Her ex even sent out a warning to Cruise, noting to the Daily Mail , “Irrespective of whoever she’s with, Tom Cruise or anybody else, they should be aware that she likes the finer things in life and has expensive and luxurious taste. Tom should keep his eyes and wallet wide open.” This could be Cruise’s most fascinating romance yet!

The Rumors That Surrounded Tom Cruise And Nicole Kidman's Hasty Wedding

B efore Tom Cruise's manic Oprah Winfrey sofa jumping, fist-pumping, and declarations of undying love for Katie Holmes spawned the moniker Tomkat, he was one half of Cruiseman. Nicole Kidman and the "Mission Impossible" star were the Hollywood power spouses of the nineties. They embarked on a whirlwind romance (sound familiar?) that sparked tabloid rumors after Cruise and Kidman said "I do" during a hasty, secret marriage on Christmas Eve, 1990.

Kidman and Cruise's relationship had been the subject of speculation from the moment they started dating. Per US Weekly , the two actors fell madly in lust on the set of 1989's "Days of Thunder." The timing of their relationship triggered accusations that Kidman had come between Cruise and his now ex-wife Mimi Rogers , as the lovestruck stars were married before the ink was barely dry on Cruise and Rogers' divorce papers. It didn't help that Andrew Morton claimed in his unauthorized biography  that Cruise had informed Rogers they were over in December of 1989, several months after he'd first met Kidman.

Rogers seemingly ended the rumors, though, when she told Playboy (via E! News ) that Cruise's depleted mojo led to the split and not his new love interest. "[Tom thought] he had to be celibate to maintain the purity of his instrument," she said. "My instrument needed tuning." So what about Kidman's instrument? Didn't that need tuning too? Well, that was the subject of just one of the rumors that surrounded Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman's hasty wedding.

Rumors Rumors Everywhere

Whenever Tom Cruise bags himself a new spouse, it sends the gossip mill into overdrive. And the rumors were flying thick and fast following Cruise and Nicole Kidman's hasty wedding. According to Entertainment Weekly , the tabloids claimed that the couple rushed to the altar because Kidman was pregnant. When that was firmly shot down by the couple's reps, conjecture resurfaced that Cruise is actually gay -- and Kidman was acting as a beard to protect his hetero heartthrob image.

Rumors about Cruise's sexuality have plagued him for years —  with the actor addressing them in an interview with Playboy (via Yahoo! Entertainment ). He said there was zero point in constantly denying tabloid gossip and that he preferred to pick his fights. "With certain [stories], you have to go, 'Okay, you crossed a line, and now you have the attention of my lawyers,'" Cruise said. "They know I mean it, that if I have to, I will sue. But life is not a matter of trying to prove anything to anybody," he continued. The couple ultimately sued a UK newspaper for $500,000 for claiming their marriage was a sham.

The Sydney Morning Herald reported that David Miscavige purportedly arranged for Kidman to be Cruise's spouse after becoming concerned about Mimi Rogers' take on Scientology — and then allegedly split Cruise and Kidman up when he became concerned about her. Then there were rumors that the couple wed as a ploy to boost the still relatively unknown Kidman's career.

And Just Like That....

The rumors surrounding Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman's hasty wedding were eventually superseded by rumors surrounding their hasty split. Per MailOnline , they announced they were parting ways in February 2001 after nearly 11 years of marriage — Cruise filed for divorce just two days later. A rep insisted the two actors were still good friends and that they had "great respect" for each other. The rep blamed their hectic work schedules and claimed Cruise and Kidman had decided that separating was the best path for both of them.

That was all news to Kidman, apparently. In an interview with Dujour magazine, Kidman shared the one thing that hurt her the most in their divorce . She claimed she'd been wholly blindsided by Cruise's decision to end things and begged him to give it another go, but he'd refused. "It took me a very long time to heal. It was a shock to my system," she said. In fact, in her reply to his divorce petition, ABC News reported that Kidman "protested [Cruise's] intention to dissolve their marriage and urged him not to leave but to enter marriage counseling with her." But it was mission impossible.

Kidman told Harpers Bazaar that she was probably too young when she married Cruise at just 24 and hadn't been ready for the subsequent emotional rollercoaster and jolting end. "I'm wary at times, and I've been hurt, but at the same time, I much prefer a warm approach rather than a prickly shutdown approach," Kidman said.

Amid the glitz and glamour of Victoria Beckham 's extravagant 50th birthday bash, Tom Cruise showcased a moment of chivalry as he helped a photographer who had stumbled outside the venue.

The Top Gun actor, exuding his trademark suave demeanor in a sharp black suit and shades, diverted from entering the festivities to assist the paparazzo, who had taken a tumble. With effortless grace, the 61-year-old extended a helping hand, swiftly grasping the photographer's arm and aiding him back to his feet.

Victoria's milestone celebration unfolded in grandeur at Oswald's in Mayfair, London, where she spared no expense in orchestrating an unforgettable evening. Accompanied by her husband, David, and their brood of Brooklyn, Romeo, Cruz and Harper, the fashion icon radiated jubilance as she marked the occasion in style.

Among the star-studded guests were Victoria's fellow Spice Girls  -- Melanie Chisholm , Geri Halliwell ,  Emma Bunton  and  Melanie Brown  -- all arriving to revel in the festivities. Cruise himself, alongside Victoria's close confidante Eva Longoria, crooner Marc Anthony, and a plethora of other renowned personalities, converged on the exclusive members' bar.

An eyewitness tells ET, "Tom was in amazing spirits while celebrating Victoria’s birthday. He had great energy and was dancing throughout the entire night. He had so much fun."

On Saturday, David, 48, treated his Instagram followers to a special performance from Victoria's 50th birthday celebration: a Spice Girls reunion. 

"I mean come on x @victoriabeckham @melaniecmusic @officialmelb @emmaleebunton @gerihalliwellhorner 💚💛🧡💜💙," David captioned the post. 

In the video, the camera pans to Victoria (Posh Spice), Geri (Ginger Spice), Emma (Baby Spice), Mel B (Scary Spice) and Mel C (Sporty Spice) all in a line doing their iconic dance moves while singing their hit, "Stop." 

While the Spice Girls are in action during the moment, David sings along with the rest of the room.

Victoria celebrated the moment on her respective Instagram. 

"Best night ever! Happy Birthday to me! I love you all so much! #SpiceUpYourLife," the fashion designer captioned the video. 

Mel B also shared the video on her Instagram alongside a cheeky caption.

"About last night #tourdatescomingsoon," she wrote on the video. 

Meanwhile, Emma posed with Mel C prior to the party.

"Off to celebrate our special girl @victoriabeckham #spicegirls #holdontoyournickersgirls," she captioned the post featuring her and Mel C posing in their gowns. 

The Spice Girls reunion comes one month after the group marked the 30th anniversary of their auditions. The last time the women officially reunited was for their tour in 2013, though Victoria notably skipped out on it. 

"Today marks the 30th anniversary of the very first Spice Girls auditions!" they wrote last month. "What started back in 1994 has turned into an amazing journey, way beyond anything we could have ever imagined. Thank you to our fans for your support from day one #FriendshipNeverEnds ."

In the video montage, set to their 1996 hit, "Wannabe," the women are shown dancing and goofing around with each other while wearing casual '90s outfits. 

In January, Mel B opened up about the bond the women share after three decades of friendship.

"I was a Spice Girl at the age of 17. I'm old," she told Jennifer Hudson at the time. "I'm feeling old right now. But it is amazing that we've managed to kind of still stay friends. It's been 30 years. What you go through as a group... you are just welded together for life because you've been through such a crazy experience."
