Tour description, more than the sistine chapel—this skip-the-line tour shows you the best of the vatican museums..

Our Complete Vatican Tour goes beyond the ordinary to give you unrivaled insight into one of the world's most sacred sites. From the Sistine Chapel and Raphael Rooms to incredible ancient sculptures you may never have heard of, our route through the Vatican Museums visits all the sights you wanted to see—plus some surprises you didn’t expect.

The pièce-de-resistance, of course, is the Sistine Chapel. By the time we arrive at the crown jewel of the Vatican, your guide will have explained the stories and secrets behind the paintings—what they mean and why they’re so renowned—so you can fully appreciate every detail.

Enjoy a guided tour of St. Peter's Basilica (and skip the line!).

Located outside of the Vatican Museums, St. Peter’s Basilica has its own entrance and its own rules, with limited hours for guided tours. Our Complete Vatican Tour ensures that you get inside the Basilica (and avoid the long line to get in!) with your expert guide to enjoy Michelangelo’s moving Pietà, Bernini’s ornate Baldachin, and the chair of St. Peter, among other treasures.

Explore with one of the best guides in the business on our Complete Vatican Tour.

We’ve spent years growing a team of passionate experts who want to share the Vatican with you. Combine them with a small group and you have a recipe for sightseeing perfection! We also use privileged entrances at the Vatican Museums and St. Peter’s Basilica, bypassing general access lines that can stretch for hours at each site during high season.

The Complete Vatican Tour offers an uncompromising, unhurried exploration of the world’s most fascinating independent state for those who want a truly in-depth Vatican experience.

Note: The special access passage between the Sistine Chapel and St. Peter's Basilica is closed on Wednesdays and subject to other unexpected closures during special celebrations/festivities, including the Easter ceremonies. On such days we will instead explore the magnificent Pinoteca Gallery.

Sometimes guides may not be allowed to give tours inside St. Peter's Basilica, in which case they will share a brief explanation from outside and you will be free to visit the Basilica by yourself.

Julieta was fantastic!

We’re not normally tour people as we like to do it ourselves but this tour was so worth it to skip so many hours of lines and our guide was fantastic. We would definitely recommend this to anyone.

Mauro was an excellent guide. Very knowledgeable and kept it very interesting.

Guide was nice. She did ask questions and then mock wrong answers. Did not tip for this reason. Was good about pointing out bathrooms. Most of her information was basic but good if you have not read a lot about the area…

We loved our tour with Roberto. We only had a short period of time in Naples and wanted to take advantage of the incredible food culture while also getting a sense of the city. We tried a wide variety of local specialties and got to learn from owners/chefs. We also got to talk to Roberto about his experiences which deepened the experience. Highly recommended as an early-trip activity for anyone coming to Naples.

Vatican Museums Key Master Tour - You can unlock the Sistine Chapel!

elyssa profile

By Elyssa Bernard

December 21, 2023

Can you imagine standing in the Sistine chapel alone?

Gazing at the masterpieces all around you, taking it all in without any distractions?

This is what it's like when you take the VIP Vatican Key Master tour.

vip open vatican sistine with few people

How can you take this tour and what is it like? That's what this page is about!

Waking up the Vatican - 6 AM tour of the Vatican Museums

With this exclusive tour , you'll 'wake up' the Vatican Museum buildings by going around with the Key Master and literally opening doors and turning on lights.

On this page we'll go over:

  • What are the highlights of the Vatican's Key Master tour?
  • What will you see on this walking tour?

What's not included?

  • Is it worth taking the Vatican Key Master small group tour?

What are some alternative Vatican tours?

  • How can you book the Vatican Key Master's guided tour?

What are the highlights of the Vatican Key Master's tour?

This is truly one of the most special tours of the Vatican Museums I know.

And I've taken every Vatican Museums tour there is, and even some tours they don't offer any more.

Nothing compares to how amazing this guided tour is.

And I use the word "amazing" in the truest sense of the word.

A VERY early start!

While the start time can be a bit rough, especially for the jet-lagged or those looking to relax on vacation, the 6AM exclusive entrance to the Vatican Museums feels oh so privileged.

The tour meeting time is 5:45AM and it will be dark.

We had a full moon overhead when I recently took this tour.

Do not be late , you will be denied entry if you do not arrive on time!

What to expect

Your meeting point is outside the main entrance, where you will be welcomed by the official Vatican tour guide.

The doors to the museums are shut tight.

All of a sudden, a crack of light appears, as a guard opens one of the doors.

As you enter the museums, you'll be mostly in the dark.

If you've ever visited the Vatican Museums before, you will be astounded by the quiet.

The tour has a maximum of 20 people, so it's an intimate group and you'll easily be able to follow along with the official Vatican guide.

Just a small group goes when they run this, so the 20-person maximum is the true maximum.

(Other "VIP" or "early-bird" Vatican museums and Sistine Chapel tours are run often concurrently by several different agencies, so while you will find smaller crowds, and the museums will be emptier, they are less exclusive than this one.)

One of the first things you'll do is visit the terrace where you can see Saint Peter's dome .

The Vatican Gardens spread out below you and it's so dark and so quiet.

And peaceful.

early morning on the Vatican terrace

Who are the Key Masters?

Next, you'll go meet the Vatican Key Master, called the " clavigero ", where you'll see all the keys they use for opening Vatican museums every day (except Sundays, although the Vatican Museums are open the last Sunday of every month .)

vip open vatican - elyssa with key master

There are 2,797 keys that open around 300 rooms in the vast museums.

Gianni Crea is THE clavigero , and he oversees a team of 10 others, 5 who open the museums each morning and another 5 who close them.

The teams regularly alternate so they do both shifts.

You'll follow Gianni and another key master, and hear explanations from your guide of various important works as you move through the rooms.

The key masters will allow one person to open a given door, and with only 20 people on the tour, everyone will have a chance to open a Vatican Museum door .

When I took this tour recently, I was allowed to open the Sistine Chapel !

vip open vatican - key to sistine chapel

Clavigero comes from the Latin word " clavis " which means "key."

You may have heard of the word " conclave " which is when the cardinals are locked inside the Sistine Chapel to vote on a new pope.

Conclave is from " con clave " - with the key, i.e. under lock and key.

What will you see on this guided tour?

The group tour route is the typical itinerary you'd follow on most Vatican Museum visits .

But you may see some additional things depending on the Vatican tour guide and/or key masters accompanying you.

It also may depend on your own interests.

Main route through the Museums

Most Vatican Museums tours, including this one, take you through:

  • The Octagonal courtyard (where you can see the famous sculptures of the Laocoön and Belvedere Apollo.)
  • The Rotunda room
  • The Greek Cross Room
  • The Tapestries Hall
  • The Gallery of Maps
  • The Raphael Rooms
  • The Sistine Chapel

But it's not so much that you get to see these rooms, it's how you see them.

When you go into the Octagonal Courtyard , it will likely still be dark out, perhaps with the beginnings of dawn.

A huge benefit of having exclusive hours inside!

The quiet here is truly wonderful, but the best part is that the guides allow you to walk AROUND the sculptures and see them (and photograph them) from all angles, in all their majesty.

During regular visiting hours, you cannot get this close to these sculptures, nor can you walk around them.

The Gallery of Maps is a particular highlight for many people.

vip open vatican - elyssa in hall of maps

The tour guide will make this tour even more fun by having you walk into the Gallery of Maps in the dark, I mean nearly pitch black, and then telling you to get your cameras ready for when the lights come on.

It will give you chills!

Then you get to go through and open all the windows as your guide gives you a tour of the empty galleries.

And of course, the most amazing part is opening the Sistine Chapel door, going inside in the dark, and watch Michelangelo's frescoes flicker as THOSE lights come on.

You will never forget this moment.

The Sistine Chapel is such a sacred place, somewhere art historians have studied for centuries, so to enter completely alone and see one of Rome's most sought after spaces without the normal crowds of people is indescribable.

Exciting extras

Because they have to open up all the rooms, as you go along on this Key Master's tour with the Clavigero , you may be treated to exclusive access to some rooms and sights normally not available to regular visitors.

bramante staircase

These extra special spots might be included on your tour but it may also depend on the tour guide and the timing.

You might also ask the guide if there is something specific you want to see as you go along.

On this tour, you may be able to also visit:

  • The Bramante staircase (with the best sunrise views!)
  • The animal room(s), also known as the stone zoo
  • The terrace overlooking the Pinecone courtyard (which is accessible from the Egyptian wing which you will also see)
  • The room of the Biga

room of the biga

If you've ever visited the Vatican Museums on a regular visit or as part of tour groups, you'll know how special and unusual it is to be able to see these spots.

Or perhaps you'll visit the museums at a later date, and you'll note how these areas are all off limits and you'll think to yourself, wow, I got to see that.

Want to visit the Vatican Secret Rooms separately, including the Bramante Staircase, Room of the Masks, and Niccoline Chapel?

This is a very particular tour in which much of the focus is on the ooooh-factor of opening Vatican Museums doors and turning on lights.

Yes, you will get to see the museums and many masterpieces , and the guide that accompanies you (not the key master) will give you an excellent tour full of anecdotes and explanations.

But because you are opening rooms and have to get to the Sistine Chapel at a certain time (before they open for the "early morning" groups), you have to keep to a schedule and won't be able to explore certain parts of the museums.

NEW FOR 2024!

The archeological area of the Vatican Necropolis of Via Triumphalis is now open for visitors.

This is an ancient Roman burial site that is within the Vatican walls and before now was very difficult to get access to.

You can only enter as part of an official Vatican tour group, and tickets need to be purchased through the official website .

This is an entirely separate visit, so you will not have access to either St Peter's Basilica or the Vatican Museums.

Click here to watch my YouTube video about it and see what it's like!

Some wings not included

vatican museums pinacoteca

There are a few things not included on this tour that are not necessarily included in most tours anyway, such as:

  • The Pinacoteca (paintings gallery)
  • The Braccio Nuovo (New Wing)
  • The Etruscan Wing
  • The Gregorio Profano Wing

In any case, after the tour ends, you remain inside the Vatican Museums and may stay as long as you like.

You can take advantage of the fact you haven't had to go through a huge security line and that there will still be few other travelers around and go back and visit any of the above sections if you have time, energy, and interest.

(Personally, I was ready to head out to a nice big breakfast!)

Breakfast not included

Don't get caught out with hunger pangs!

Those with low blood sugar, or taking this tour with kids may want to bring a few protein bars with you.

Speaking of breakfast, it is not included with this tour.

As the meeting time is so early, you likely won't have had breakfast before the tour and might be hungry by the time it finishes.

Again, you will still be inside the Vatican Museums at the end and can have breakfast at either the café downstairs or in the Pinecone courtyard.

Or, if you are ready to leave, you could go elsewhere for breakfast .

sunrise from bramante staircase

Saint Peter's Basilica not included

Finally, the main thing not included in this tour is a visit to the basilica  next door.

(The shortcut is open and available to people on an official tour which includes the Basilica later in the morning but not this early.)

If you want to visit, you could go right after your tour ends, but you'll still have to leave the museums and walk to Saint Peter's Square , and go through Vatican City security checks to enter the basilica.

Here is a map so you can see the walk (it will open in a new window.)

But at this early hour, you should not have much of a wait in line.

Or you could visit the basilica later or on another day .

The perfect 3-day itinerary in Rome

Trying to figure out how to organize your visit to Rome? I've got the perfect 3-day itinerary for first-time visitors (or those who have not been here in a while.) It works for a 2.5 day visit as well.

In my 3-day itinerary, you'll see all the major must-see Rome attractions like the Vatican , Colosseum , Trevi Fountain , Pantheon , Piazza Navona , Spanish Steps , Castel Sant'Angelo , and much more.

And if you have more time, or want suggestions for extra/other things to do, you'll find that there too.

Visit my page with the best 3-day itinerary in Rome for first-timers .

Is it worth taking the Vatican Key Master's tour?

Most visitors to Rome want to see the Sistine Chapel and to do that, you must go through the Vatican Museums .

There are many options for tours, including fast-track, early morning, semi-private, and so on.

You will find plenty of less-expensive tours that still offer a more "exclusive" experience (see below) than regular Vatican Museum tours .

So is it worth the price to wake up so early and take this tour ?

In my opinion, absolutely yes . The amazing experience is magical and unforgettable.

That said, if this is your first time visiting Rome , and if you have a strong interest in art, you may wish to plan a separate visit where you can take more time to explore the Vatican Museums.

You may also want a visit that includes going inside the basilica .

tour of vatican museum

Is the museums key master tour unsuitable for anyone?

Due to the route taken through the Vatican Museums, this particular tour is unfortunately not wheelchair accessible .

There are plenty of stairs and some non-wheelchair accessible surfaces involved.

There is a wheelchair accessible and limited mobility route through the museums, and tour providers who offer specific tours tailored to these needs which you can book.

The Key Master tour is also not suitable for strollers , and I would not recommend bringing young children along.

There are some excellent tours of the museums aimed at children available as an alternative.

Take Walks is a well-respected tour company offering high-quality tours.

They offer this tour regularly, but if you don't want to take this tour or can't find availability, there are some excellent alternatives:

  • Pristine Sistine™ Early Entrance Small Group Vatican City Tour - You'll enter the museums an hour before the public, and visit the Sistine Chapel before the crowds come, followed by an early morning visit to Saint Peter's Basilica.
  • VIP Sistine Chapel After Closing Time Tour with Drinks in the Vatican Palace Courtyard - I really love this tour that starts close to closing time and finishes with you and your guide nearly alone in the Sistine Chapel after the doors have closed to regular visitors. The Happy Hour afterward is a nice plus.
  • Vatican Highlights Tour with St. Peter’s Dome Climb - See the Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel, and St.Peter's Basilica, including a climb up Saint Peter's dome.
  • Vatican Museums Night Tour with Sistine Chapel - From March 2024 you can enjoy a night tour of the Vatican Museums on certain days of the week. There are usually fewer people than during the day. The basilica is not included in this tour.
  • Rome in a Day Tour: Including Vatican City, Colosseum & Historic Center - Short on time? Want to see Rome highlights in a day ? This is the tour for you.
  • The Complete Vatican Tour With Vatican Museums & Sistine Chapel - This is a standard skip-the-line small group (max 20 people) daytime tour of the Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel, and the Basilica.
  • St. Peter’s Basilica from Top to Bottom with Dome Climb & Crypt - If you're not keen on visiting the museums and just want to visit the basilica, this is the perfect tour for you.

How to see the Sistine Chapel all by yourself — or explore the Vatican Museums on the cheap

Kevin Raub

Jun 15, 2022 • 6 min read

Kevin Raub

A traveler walks with the Vatican Museums' keymaster Gianni Crea (right) walk through the halls of the Vatican Museums © Copyright – Governatorato S.C.V. – Direzione dei Musei

You’d be wrong to assume that, should you find yourself in the once-in-a-lifetime position of gaining access to the Vatican Museums at 6 am — a full three hours before the doors open to the public — there would be any pomp and circumstance when the main entrance door along Rome’s Viale Vaticano swings open.

The door, built in 1932 and topped by Pietro Malendri-chiseled sculptures of the Vatican’s two main artistic superstars, Michelangelo (with a sculptor's mallet in his hand on the left); and Raphael (clutching his palette and brush on the right), is a grand exercise in symbolic expectation. The chiseled words above, in Latin script, are both direct and spine-tingling: Vatican Museums. It need not say more.

However, it’s just a suited security staff member who casually opens the door and says, " Buongiorno! " Were it not for the fact that the general public doesn’t actually use this door (visitors enter through a far more modern gateway a few meters to the left), it wouldn’t feel special at all.

But therein lies the rub. Entering the Vatican Museums at sunrise needs no added fanfare — the treasures awaiting in the museums, void of people and quiet enough to hear an aureus coin drop, do all the work themselves.

I’ve come to the Vatican to meet the clavigero , the official Vatican keymaster, Gianni Crea, who oversees the nearly 3000 keys that open all the doors within the Vatican Museums. Crea heads up a team of 11 clavigeri , who take turns opening and closing the various rooms of the Vatican Museums, including the Sistine Chapel, each and every day. I’m just along for the ride.

The 8 best museums in Rome

Crea, an immediately likable Italian from Calabria, shows me how the keys are kept in a special bunker nightly; and explains that there are five backups of each one. Except one — the key that unlocks the Sistine Chapel. This key is sealed in an enveloped nightly, stamped and sealed by the Swiss Guards, and locked away in the bunker. There is no backup.

A key inside of a sealed envelope.

Crea hands me the envelope and I casually tuck it away in the back pocket of my jeans — it’s a long walk to the Sistine Chapel and I need my hands to take notes and snap pictures.

As we saunter through the museums, no words can describe the extraordinary experience of watching the rooms come to life at the flick of a light switch, soundtracked by Crea's spirited commentary. Inside Museo Pio-Clementino, Crea nonchalantly removes a rope and takes me behind the Laocoön, one of the most famous ancient sculptures in the world, like we are peeking behind a TV console in his living room (yes, the rumors are true — the original arm is attached to the back of the statue!). We ascend the original Bramante Staircase — closed to the public in most cases — for an extraordinary morning view across Rome. The Gallery of Maps, probably the second most dazzling gallery in the Vatican Museums after the Sistine Chapel, illuminates like the lights of Heaven’s Gate when the electricity is turned on (so astonishing, we do it twice).

Finally, we arrive at the Sistine Chapel. Crea tells me to get to it. “I’ve lost the key,” I joke. "Nooooooooooo!" says Crea with a wry smile. I turn the key to the left. The door opens. And there it is: The most legendary, most eye-popping, most creatively-astonishing room in the world. Empty — there are no words.

The door to the Sistine Chapel

So, how can you experience this once-in-a-lifetime, clavigero-guided tour of the Vatican yourself? Well, currently, the only way is to enter GetYourGuide’s  "Turning the Lights On at the Vatican Museums" contest . Other tours offer access with clavigeri, but only one will get you face-time with Crea.

But there are a lot of other fantastic ways to do the Vatican — including exclusive private tours to options that won't break the bank.

The Vatican Museums house one of the world’s most immense collections of ancient sculptures and Renaissance art — some 70,000 works in total, of which 20,000 or so are actively displayed in 24 interconnected galleries across 7 km of museum space. It’s overwhelming —and it’s crowded. Pre-COVID numbers in 2019 recorded some 6.9 million folks through the turnstiles. Is there a way to keep your sanity along the way?

Sì, signori! Depending on your budget, the options are as daunting as the museum itself.

Everything you need to know before visiting Rome

Vatican Museums on the cheap

The absolute cheapest route is booking admission tickets directly (do it well in advance, up to 60 days), which nets you an unprecedented laundry list of world-class art for less than the price of a gourmet pizza back home (adult/reduced €17/€8 plus a €4 reservation fee and optional audio guide €7). Post-COVID, booking online in advance is compulsory.

If the goal is the Sistine Chapel at its quietest, show up at least 1.5 to two hours prior to the 9 am opening to ensure a strategic position in line (keeping in mind you will not be the only person with this idea!). High tail it direct to Michaelangelo‘s masterpiece following the shortcut signage and you’ll arrive before most of the masses. Afterwards, work your way backwards to see everything you flew by when the doors opened.

You won’t have the Last Judgement to yourself, but it’s the best you can do on a budget.

Top things to do in Rome

Early access, semi-private and group tours

Another way to beat the crowds at the Vatican Museums are early morning and evening semi-private and group tours. The Vatican itself offers both a Prime and Prime VIP Experiences, both of which tour the museum one hour before opening. Though you won’t get the clavigero as your tour guide, you will be led by an authorized educational guide who will notably enhance your overall experience.

The difference between the two experiences is group size and price: Prime groups host up to 25 people for €63 per person. The Prime VIP limits the group to 10 for €45 per person; both tours include breakfast and a guided tour through the Upper Galleries (Candelabras, Geographical Maps, and Tapestries), the Raphael Rooms and the Sistine Chapel. Other parts of the Museums may be visited without the guide after breakfast during normal opening hours.

Various independent tour companies offer similar early access and night tour options ranging in price between €50 and €100; and of course semi-private and group tours are available throughout the day as well. Skip-the-Line access for St. Peter’s Basilica is often offered as well.

Private tours of the Vatican

Private tours of the Vatican are similar in style to semi-private and group tours, but are just for you and yours. They will usually involve entering one hour before opening time, include breakfast in the Pinecone Courtyard, and feature a dedicated guide. Most options settle in around €150 to €250 per person.

A spiral staircase winds down through the Vatican Museums.

Some of these tours will even including off limit highlights, such as the original Bramante Staircase, and sometimes explore deeper into galleries that other tours cast but a tertiary glance.

If you are looking to unlock your way to the Sistine Chapel with a clavigero, that’s possible, too, with numerous private companies offering the experience from around €300 per person and up (options with UK-based True Travel, who includes the experience has part of a broader package that includes hotel accommodation, transfers and other sightseeing experiences, start from €2500 to €3000 for two people).

You won’t get the boss (Crea) — one of his staff usually leads these tours — or his remarkable stories. But you will experience the Vatican Museums like few others have.

Rome Actually

Visiting the Vatican Museums – All You Need to Know for a Perfect Tour

Visiting the Vatican Museums, one of the largest museums in Rome and also one of the most famous museums in Italy , requires some good planning. Being so popular, you will likely find a long line at the entrance. Being so old, you will definitely be overwhelmed about what to visit in the short time you can afford inside.

Being one of the main landmarks of Vatican City , this wonderful museum is pretty much always included in the private Vatican tours as well as the more generic tours of Rome .

I wrote this guide to visit the Vatican Museums to avoid as many surprises as possible and ensure a smooth tour. Here you will find important information regularly updated about visiting hours and closing times, ticket prices, and how to skip the line when visiting the Vatican Museums in Rome.

Table of Contents

Our tips and guide to visiting the Vatican Museums

Is it worth visiting the vatican museums.

The Vatican Museums enshrine five centuries of history and artwork donated to the popes by the world’s leaders, kings, and queens, as well as the pieces purchased and commissioned by the popes themselves throughout history.

Historical pieces like clothes and carriages and historical areas like the different popes’ apartments sit side by side with immortal artwork such as Michelangelo’s Last Judgment in the Sistine Chapel and the frescoes of Raphael’s Rooms.

First and foremost, you need to accept the idea that you can’t just show up at the entrance of the Vatican Museums and get in straight away. There will be a long queue or it might even be closed, so if you haven’t done a minimum of planning, you might end up wasting time and missing one of the best places to visit in Rome .

Image: Ceiling to see when visiting the Vatican Museums.

Tickets for the Vatican Museums

From January 1st, 2024, the tickets for the Vatican Museums will be more expensive, priced at 20€ instead of the current 17€.

To fight the phenomenon of unauthorized ticket resales, the Vatican Museums will introduce nominative tickets and will start checking IDs at the entrance.

Skip the line

Nobody likes standing in line for hours on end, especially when there is an easy way to avoid this. While you can just turn up and buy your ticket, this is no guarantee that you will do it as easily as you think.

In Rome’s most famous landmarks , it’s of paramount importance to arrive with your ticket already purchased. There are many websites where you can buy your ticket to the Vatican Museums online, one of the most popular is Get Your Guide .

Join a tour

Alternatively, instead of just booking your entrance, you can join a private tour of the Vatican Museums. Along with the admission, a private tour includes a guide who will take you directly to the most famous spots you would probably miss if you were on your own or that you would have to look for.

A guided tour is more expensive than a single admission ticket but has the perks of saving you time and making your visit more complete with historical facts and anecdotes. We recently took a very exclusive private tour of the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel and loved it.

Check closing time…

Even though an art gallery, the Vatican Museums are closed on Sunday, except if it’s the last Sunday of the month when there is free entrance. The Vatican Museums also close on the main religious holidays when other museums are actually open, such as Easter Sunday and Monday, November 1st (All Saints’ Day), December 8th (Immaculate Conception), Christmas and Boxing Day, and New Year’s Eve, December 31st.

… and the new opening hours

Starting January 1st, 2024, the Vatican Museums announced that they are going to extend their visiting time by two hours, one extra in the morning and one extra in the evening. So instead of opening at 9 am, it will open at 8 am, and instead of closing at 6 pm, the Vatican Museums will close at 7 pm. This applies to every day from Monday to Saturday.

From the beginning of March 2024 when the high season starts, the Vatican Museums will extend an extra hour on Friday and Saturday, closing at 8 pm only on these two days.

Follow the dress code

Again, even though visiting the Vatican Museums might just seem like entering an art exhibition, you need to keep in mind that they are located inside Vatican City. This means that you are expected to follow the Vatican dress code you would follow when visiting the Basilica of Saint Peter and its underground Roman necropolis .

What is not allowed in the Vatican Museums?

Large bags, backpacks, and suitcases are not allowed in the Vatican Museums and you will need to leave them in the cloakroom. Apart from these types of bags, among the obvious objects that are not allowed in the Vatican Museums are firearms, knives, scissors, and any sharp and dangerous object.

Image: Paintings of the Vatican Museums in Rome.

Are photos allowed in the Vatican Museums?

You can snap your pictures without using the flash everywhere in the Vatican Museums except for the Sistine Chapel and the frescoes of Michelangelo. It’s also not allowed to take videos, use selfie sticks, or use professional photo and video gear, including a tripod. Anyone visiting the Vatican Museums should be aware of these rules as there are staff and guards everywhere who will ask you to delete your photos.

Be mindful of the noise

This doesn’t apply to all the areas when visiting the Vatican Museums but only when you are inside the Sistine Chapel. Here, in fact, you will be asked to be silent or to speak by whispering so that the experience of your fellow visitors won’t be ruined when admiring Michelangelo’s masterpieces.

Guided tours of the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel

tour of vatican museum

The Catholic Traveler’s Guide to Rome is offered completely free to be sure you have the best pilgrimage experience – and is only possible because of my generous supporters. Please consider supporting my work through Patreon or Substack , or a one time tip through Venmo . 🤍

I think most people can get by touring the Vatican Museums on their own without a guide. Simply using an audio guide or a guide book is all most need. Here’s why…

Nearly 30,000 people visit the Vatican Museums each day.

30,000 people. Every day.

tour of vatican museum

This looks miserable because it is miserable.

Some of the best works of art are housed in the Vatican Museums. There are some amazing private guides. Despite this, the biggest complaint I hear about visits to Rome is how miserable the Vatican Museums were.

Plus, admiring beautiful art is a very personal thing. If you go alone, you can go at your own pace. You can sit and enjoy a work of art. You can venture off the typical tourist itinerary – there’s a reason it’s Vatican Museum s and not Vatican Museum. There are lots of galleries in the Museums that most people never visit.

Go it alone

You can, and should, book a ticket to the Vatican Museums on their official website.

The Museums are nearly always packed, but later in the day the crowds start to thin out.

My favorite time to visit is during the Night Openings of the Vatican Museums . This is seasonal and a really cool and unique experience.

Another new(ish) option is to book breakfast at the Vatican Museums . You pay a little more, but get in before the crowds. If you go this route, go straight to the Sistine Chapel to enjoy it before the crowds. Then you can back track and visit the rest of the Museums.

Guided tours

If you feel you need a guided tour, you have tons and tons of options. I’ve listed some of the best here…

For a private guided tour, I recommend Agnes at Understanding Rome . She’s professional, fun, and engaging. You should let her know I sent you. You should also book early as she’s quite popular.

One of the best guides out there is Liz Lev . She’s often booked solid and also a bit more expensive than most other guides, but she’s worth the price. She’s a good friend, let her know I sent you.

If you have the means, I highly recommend becoming a Patron of the Arts for the Vatican Museums . The perks are amazing, the price probably isn’t as much as you’d expect, and the guides are excellent. In fact, the first time I took a Patron tour, my guide was the same woman who guided U.S. Presidents Clinton, Bush, and Obama – and it was just the two of us.

The official Vatican Museum tours are hit or miss. More often than not, it’s a miss. Once I had the Vatican assign an excellent guide to me. Once. Don’t get me wrong, there are a few great guides employed by the Museums, but you don’t get to pick.

What to avoid

Any of the big tour companies in Rome – especially if you are Catholic. I lived across the street from one of the biggest companies (even endorsed by the Vatican) for two years, I heard nonstop bashing of the Church. I currently live across from another one of the big ones, I don’t hear Church bashing every day, but the tours sound really lame.

Anyone who harasses you near the Vatican to “skip the line.” It’s a rip off. Just don’t.

Vatican City Self Guided Tour

How to visit the vatican museum using the google map: main floor.

1. After you enter the Vatican Museum, at the top of the escalator, turn RIGHT instead of left (don’t follow the crowd towards the left) to go the Vatican Pinacoteca – Gallery of the Old Masters. You will pass through the Pinacoteca Courtyard and a small cafe. The main floor walking tour is highlighted in purple on the interactive Vatican museum map above 2. When you are done at the Pinacoteca: – 2a. If you are able to exit from the Pinacoteca museum building to the adjoining Four Square Garden outside (Giardino Quadrato) you can visit the Carriage Museum. The access to the Carriage Museum (Museo Storico – Padiglione delle Carrozze) is a set of stairs. It is in a large room under the courtyard in the corner of the Four Square Garden. If you cannot access the Four Square Courtyard from here, another route to the Carriage Museum is outlined in step 9a   OR – 2b. From the Pinacoteca , go back to the intersection and pass the Atrium of the Four Gates (Quattro Cancelli) to the 18th century Simonetti Staircase to enter the Egyptian Museum. Along the way you will see signs for “Percorsco Completo” and it will take you to the Pio-Clementine Museum (and the Egyptian Museum is close to the Pio-Clementine Museum). An outline of this Vatican museum image is on the map of this self guided walking route above, just click on the Pio-Clementine Museum map pin 3. Egyptian Museum. Enter and explore the Egyptian Museum, you can also access the Chiaramonte and Braccio Museum from here – 3a. At the end of the Egyptian Museum the stairs on your right going down will take you to the Chiaramonte Museum (if you go left it will take you into the  hall of statues of Pio-Clementine Museum and to Bramante Staircase). Take the stairs to your right to go down to the Museum Chiaramonti (long corridor on the east side of the Belvedere Palace) and into the Braccio Nuovo (New Wing) to the right – 3b. You can access the Pinecone Courtyard after visiting the Egyptian Museum or the Pio-Clementine Museum.. Refer to step 6 for information on the Pinecone Courtyard 4. Once you are done in this area, head back up the corridor to the entrance of the Pio-Clementine Museum (Vatican Museum map image of this route is in the above map, just click on the map pin)

How to Visit Vatican Museum: use the google map of the Pio-Clementine Museum

5. Enter the Pio-Clementine Museum. It consists of several rooms, listed in no particular order: – the Sarcophagus room – two red sarcophagus of the Emperor Constantine’s daughter Constantia and his mother St Helena – Sala Rotunda – Round room with a huge red bathtub made from a single stone, Porphyry Basin (Porphyry is a type of rock) – gallery of Muse; busts of many roman figures (including the Belvedere Torso) – gallery of Animals; sculptures of real and mythological animals – gallery of statues – Octagonal Square – two important statues. Statue of  “Belvedere’s Apollo”  and “Laocoonte” , before entering the courtyard you will see the statue of the athlete Apoxymenos – Bramante Staircase (may be closed) 6. From the Pio-Clementino Museum head outside to the Pinecone Courtyard (Pigna). There is a small outdoor cafe; I would stop and enjoy the overpriced coffee in the courtyard and take a break as you may be overwhelmed by this time. Two sculptures worth noting in the courtyard are the bronze Pinecone fountain and the Globe in the center of the courtyard. The next set of Vatican museum attractions are on the upper floor. The walking tour is highlighted in red on the Vatican museum map 7. When you are done, head inside towards the Simonetti Staircase next to the Egyptian museum. Take the stairs up to the second floor to explore the Upper Galleries, Museums and the former Pope’s living Quarters ie: Raphael Rooms and Borgia Apartments

How to visit Vatican: Upper Floor using the Vatican museum map of attractions

8. At the top of the stairs is the Etruscan Museum 9a. Detour –  To the Carriage Museum (if you did not to visit it in step 2a). From the outdoor patio, you can access the gardens downstairs via a set of stairs to your right. You will exit into a courtyard and head straight to the Four Square Garden (Giardino Quadrato). The access to the Carriage Museum (Museo Storico – Padiglione delle Carrozze) is a set of stairs going down in the corner of the Four Square Garden. When you are done, head back to gallery of maps. You can follow the sign posts “Padiglione delle Carrozze” 10. Head back to the View point, ie: back into the hallway at the end of the Gallery of Maps.  Next, we will follow the walking route of the Vatican museum map to go to the Raphael Rooms, the Borgia Apartments, the Sistine Chapel and into St. Peter’s Basilica 11. At the end of the Gallery of Maps is a detour to the Raphael Rooms (do not head to the Sistine Chapel which is downstairs). Use the walking tour route on the Vatican museum map to go to the Raphael Rooms; the first room you will come upon is Room IV. You need to keep going until Room I which is at the end of the hallway. Start at Raphael Room I

How to Visit Vatican using the Vatican Museum Map: Raphael Rooms, Borgia Apartments and Sistine Chapel

12. After Viewing Rooms I to IV, at the back of the Raphael rooms (Room IV) there is a staircase going down to the Borgia Apartments. The apartments are downstairs of the Raphael rooms and near the entrance of the Sistine Chapel 13. After viewing the Borgia Apartments make your way to the Sistine Chapel 14. After exploring the Sistine Chapel you have two choices: – take the door to the right to go to St Peters Basilica (this is reserved for tour groups only however you can tag along with a group and exit the museum to the Basilica). Going to the Basilica using this route will save you about a 15 min walk back to exit the museum plus a 20 min walk to the Basilica from the Museum plus a security lineup to get into the Basilica OR – If you rented audio to be returned or need to pick up your personal belongings left at the front, you will have to go back the way you came towards the entrance of the museum. Once you exit Vatican City and the museum, you can stop for a snack and continue onto to St Peters Basilica or go on the St. Basilica tour another day

Vatican Gardens

What parts of the museums will you visit?

We have carefully crafted a special itinerary that will take you to see the main parts of the museums. With this tailored tour, you will visit the famous Gallery of the Candelabra. This place takes its name from the majestic candelabras that divide this gallery into six sections. The sculptures are all arranged following symmetrical criteria compatible with the architecture of the six fabulously designed rooms. This place contains artworks found throughout the country, from the time of the Roman Empire to modern-day. From there you will explore the Gallery of Tapestries displaying the work of Raffaello Sanzio. This exhibition is completely protected from sunlight in order to best preserve the tapestries. Each of these massive tapestries displays different powerful Catholic stories and myths. You will also explore the Gallery of Maps where you can gain an understanding of what the world was thought to look like centuries ago, at a time when cartography was undergoing its own renaissance.

The beauty and complexity of the Sistine Chapel

The Sistine Chapel is renowned for being decorated with what many perceive as the most spectacular masterpiece in human history, Michelangelo’s frescoes that cover the ceiling. The Sistine Chapel ceiling helped Rome overtake Florence as the supreme cultural capital of Italy. Thanks to the special time-slot provided by this tour, you will be able to walk around and admire the frescoes in complete silence. The experience will be much more insightful when the place is not crowded. The chapel is covered in beautiful and noble colours in the famous shades of ochre, umber green, Sangiovanni white, and ultramarine blue. The central part of the ceiling is divided into 9 panels portraying stories from the Book of Genesis such as the awe-inspiring Division of Light from Darkness, Creation of the Stars, of the Waters, of Adam, of Eve and finally the Creation of the Original Sin. Michelangelo’s genius has to be admired in silence but your assigned guide will give you a description of what you are about to experience before entering the chapel and will handle your questions once out.

Sistine Chapel Ceiling

Religious art at St Peter’s Basilica

This tour encompasses all the attractions of the Vatican, including a visit to St Peter’s Basilica,* a unique example of Renaissance architecture and Baroque art and a symbol of huge significance to Christianity. You will enter the Basilica through a special-access corridor, skipping the long general-access lines. The creation and décor of the Basilica involved the most brilliant engineering and artistic minds of the time. Tourists of all faiths visit the Basilica to discover and admire the creations of the geniuses of Michelangelo and Bernini. You will discover Michelangelo’s Pietà, an extremely moving sculpture depicting the lifeless body of Jesus in the arms of his mother Mary. Under the same roof, there is Bernini’s Baldachin, a massive sculpted bronze canopy that sits above St. Peter’s tomb. The Baldachin is not only jaw-dropping, but it is a prime example of the style that flourished around Europe at the beginning of the 17th century, Baroque. At the end of the tour, you can explore more at your own pace.

Small-Group Tour

You can join this early entrance guided tour, as part of a group of no more than 12 people. Being part of a small-group when touring the Vatican can be a fun yet more personal experience since the size of the group is small. Your assigned guide will accommodate everyone on the tour and answer everyone’s questions. Our guides are highly experienced at keeping such groups engaged and entertained and they will provide top insider knowledge on the monuments. This option is more budget-friendly while not giving away the benefits of having a guide to accompany you as you discover the Vatican. On top of that, it has proved to be a great option for tourists who do not mind the presence of other like-minded and culture-hungry travellers who are all enthusiastic about discovering the Vatican.

Vatican small group guided tour

Private Tour

Newlyweds, families, first-time tourers, or couples and friends who prefer more privacy or are simply looking for more authentic travel experiences, may often think that having a guide to yourself is better than sharing one. With this premium option, you decide who joins you on this tour. Needless to say that you will benefit from the undivided attention of your guide and that you can also benefit from flexibility of itinerary. With this choice you will experience the Vatican in a very time-efficient and seamless way, where you can spend more time on the galleries that appeal to you the most and less time in others, you will see the Vatican at your own pace. You can also choose this option and upgrade it to include pick-up from your accommodation. This option promises a much more comfortable, efficient, and authentic experience!

This tour runs from Monday to Saturday and it includes St Peter’s Basilica every day except on Wednesdays. The Basilica is an active Church and on Wednesdays it is closed until 1 PM due to the weekly Papal audience. Instead, you will spend more time discovering the hidden gems of the Vatican Museums. Rest assured that your guide will give you an introduction of the Basilica and the art inside so you know what to look for if you wish to visit later. Moreover, when visiting St. Peter’s Basilica and/or the Vatican Museums, you are kindly asked to respect the city’s dress code, which implies having your knees and shoulders covered.
