How to Take Photos on Your Mission Trip without Being a Jerk
I’ve lived in a few different countries, including the past year in South Africa. I’ve also been able to make photographs on the streets of Hong Kong, Dubai, Thailand, and Lebanon this year. I am a photographer , and I love it. But I know all too often the process of taking pictures can inhibit communication and relationships (and thus ministry).
Here are some things to think about as you enter another culture and want to take photographs.
Get Prepared
- Pick somebody. I love it when a group has a designated photographer (who is good at it and passionate about it). This frees up everyone else to engage more fully without needing to document their engagement themselves.
- Plan the trip well. The current best practices for short-term missions trips generally excludes very short visits to several “sites.” Instead, plan your trip for depth in one or two places, enabling greater connect in them. This will allow you to…
- Define your intent. My friend Matt Kirk (who works with InterVarsity’s multimedia team, Twentyonehundred ) points out that photographers’ intentions make a massive difference in the quality of both their images and their ministry. Are you merely trying to make an image that sings? Or are you trying to see people with love, to show what God is doing in a place?
- Pick your camera carefully. Don’t get a new camera just before a trip. You’ll be doubly distracted by your photography as you’re learning how to use it. Know your camera well so you don’t miss shots or fumble with controls. And consider the size and type of camera you bring. A smaller camera will allow people to be more at ease. A bigger camera announces you as a photographer, which may or may not be what you want.
Value People
- ( Note: With some cultures, eye contact is not encouraged. Be sure to check on this before you’re on the ground or you may cause problems despite your good intentions.)
- Ask permission. Not completely necessary in some situations, but generally, it’s a good practice even to just hold up your camera and smile with an inquisitive expression as if to say, “Can I take your picture?” This gives someone the opportunity to hold up a hand or say “no,” even if there’s a language barrier.
- Use photography to start conversations and relationships. A camera gives you an excuse to talk to people, to be places. Sometimes, it can close doors, as people withdraw from it. But more often, people understand and are honored by someone wanting to know them, understand them, and remember them.
- Portray people as you’d like to be portrayed. This should be obvious, but once you’re in a radically different context and you’re seeing what you’ve seen in magazines or newspapers, other people can become merely subjects. Be gentle. Give people the benefit of the doubt. Be unselfish as you make images. Make sure people are built up by your photography, both your subjects and those who will see your photos later.
This Isn’t a Photo Shoot
- Keep the camera in your bag. Dwell in one place for a day or a week without taking any photos. Get to know people before you get out your camera. Buy stuff from the market. Eat with people. Get to know them and build trust. All of this will make for better ministry. And better photographs.
- Go slowly. This may be a once-in-a-lifetime experience for you and the people you’re meeting. Don’t be rushing to move along to find the next great image. You’re less likely to find it if you’re rushing.
- Watch your body language. Uncross your arms. Sit down to chat with someone. Get down on the level of a child. Stay loose and open. People will relax as they sense you are relaxed, even if you’re a foreigner, the likes of whom they’ve never seen before.
- Be quick and discrete. Visualize your photo, ask permission if appropriate, adjust your settings, and pop a frame or two.
What to (Not) Shoot
- Show joy and hardship. Or, in other words, tell the truth with your images, not just a portion thereof. Look for an accurate, honest approach showing different aspects of a place and its people. Don’t skirt past the real issues of a place, but also don’t miss the bright spots. To be truthful, you must show both to your audience.
- Watch out for cops, banks, military stuff, and government buildings. You might think it’s ridiculous to accuse you of being a spy, but it’s the opinion of the guys with uniforms and guns that counts. Just don’t.
- Shoot fewer frames. We press the shutter way too often. Focus rather on getting just one good image of a new friend or a special place.
- Hang around after taking a picture. If you press the shutter button and then walk away, you’re often communicating, “I’ve got what I came for, thank you very much.” The subject may feel taken advantage of. So rather spend more time chatting or simply watching and being pleasantly nearby before moving on.
- Get the facts. Think about what you hope to do with your images later on. Carry a notebook to get the correct spellings of people’s names and locations, to give them that respect if you show the image later on.
- Get them a copy if at all possible. It’s amazing the people who have email or Facebook on their phones, even in places way off the grid. Try to find a way to get them a copy, digital or print. It’s the least you can do for them. I have had the pleasure of giving many families the first (and likely still only) picture they have of themselves. As my friend Gary S. Chapman says, just don’t promise and then not deliver!
What other things do you think it’s important to keep in mind while doing photography cross-culturally? Or what questions do you have?

Listening Prayer
We want you to have a new experience with Jesus that dramatically encourages your relationship with Him. God has things to say to you! During our mission trips, we intentionally spend time to listen.
Relationship-driven process
More than just setting up a trip, we want to become your partners in ministry.
Customized ministry
The Holy Spirit is already doing a great work in your group; it’s our role to understand your needs and come alongside what God is already doing in a unique way.
Trusted local partners
All of our ministry partners, both overseas and domestic, have a history of excellence in hosting short-term mission teams.
Quality leadership
All of our Mission Leaders have been well trained and are specifically prepared to lead each group.
Sustainable missions
More than just designing an experience for your group, we work with ministry partners that have a long-term plan for sustainability. Your team will come alongside these efforts and can be confident that your service is actually helping.
It’s important to us that your group has an opportunity to connect with Jesus and what He’s doing, both around the world and here in the United States. It’s just as important to us that your experience happens in the context of a plan for sustainability. Our long-term missionaries and ministry partners are doing fantastic work every day. Your short-term mission trip will be specifically designed to support that effort while inspiring your group’s relationship with Jesus.

Our goal is to work alongside you to achieve your mission trip goals while providing a sustainable impact wherever you serve. In an effort to better serve you, we have developed this payment protection policy for group Short Term Mission trips.
- In the case that Adventures cancels a trip, a group’s funds are refundable up to the $75 per person deposit. This deposit is able to be applied toward a future trip with Adventures.
- Adventures will make cancelations 60 days before a trip, except for the case of unpredictable or extenuating circumstances.
- In the case that a group decides to cancel, their payments can be applied toward a future trip with Adventures but are not refundable.
- Groups must notify Adventures of a decision to cancel 60 days before the trip. After this point we cannot guarantee any re-application of funds.
COVID-19 Trip Guidelines
Adventures encourages all participants to follow CDC guidelines and local regulations at all times. These guidelines will likely change between now and the time of your trip. We will discuss these changes with you as part of your preparation leading up to your trip. It’s important that your group familiarize themselves with these guidelines and make the appropriate preparation before the trip begins.
Having said that, we have also established these basic guidelines for all Adventures Short Term Mission trips.
- Trip participants are required to fill out a health safety questionnaire before traveling to their destination.
- Trip participants are required to fill out a health safety questionnaire each morning before breakfast.
- Trip participants should maintain social distancing, including in ministry. When not socially distanced, wear a mask.
- Each participant should bring at least three masks to wear throughout the week.
- All participants will be required to have their temperature checked by the Project Leader each morning. The Project Leader will be equipped with a temporal thermometer.
- No large group gatherings. We will coordinate with our ministry partners to try to ensure that there are no large group gatherings. In the case that there are, this is done at the discretion of the ministry partner and participants should not feel obligated to attend. It’s our objective to have plenty of smaller service opportunities, such as serving at food pantries, doing work projects at churches or ministries and ministering to people in smaller groups and in a safe, responsible manner.
100.4 degrees fahrenheit
They will be quarantined and taken to a facility to have a COVID test taken. They will remain quarantined for 10 days, per CDC guidelines.
They will be quarantined from the rest of the group and everyone will follow CDC recommendations.
Exposure means 15 minute of close interaction. In this case, the participant will enter the quarantine protocol.
The participant should notify their Project Leader or group leader and remove herself/himself from the situation.
Each location will be prepared with quarantine recommendations. Each situation is unique and will be handled specifically to address the needs of the individual, the group and others who are involved.
Each group is financially responsible for their own flights. We cannot reimburse any costs associated with travel. Please check with the airline about their flight cancellation policy.
Most of the time this decision is made for us by local authorities. In some international cases, airlines may decide to not fly into a country. We look at government recommendations, airline activity and discuss with our partner. This, paired with our ongoing attention to CDC and WHO recommendations and regulations, usually makes the decision to cancel very clear.

New York City Mission Trips
Community Overview
VIEW PHOTOS
On your New York City mission trip, you’ll experience the hustle and bustle of the city, but also have time to slow down and better understand the real issues from ministry partners who are in it for the long haul. Although it is the financial capital of the world—an estimated 40,000 people sleep in city shelters every night, with thousands more sleeping on the streets. Your team will have the chance to hear their stories and be a part of ministries like The Salvation Army who are making a difference through soup kitchens, day camp, Bible studies, and person-to-person prayer in the streets.
Urban mission trips in the U.S. can provide a challenging, cross-cultural experience for your team, and New York is a true melting pot of people from around the world. You’ll feel like locals as you immerse in a bustling urban environment, just a short subway ride from Times Square. Throughout the week, your team will walk the city blocks and ride public transportation to serve with ministries throughout Harlem, Brooklyn, and the Bronx. As you engage with local ministries, you’ll see real needs but you’ll also be a part of making people feel valued and heard.
Will you join a 2024 mission trip to New York and be a picture of hope to those on the fringes of society in America’s largest city?
Meet our Local Partners

Details & Logistics
Activities & opportunities, projects/outreach ministry.
This is a highly relational trip with many opportunities for engagement. Possible activities include working with underprivileged youth and people experiencing homelessness. You also may do lighter service projects such as minor repairs, cleaning & sorting, painting, and yard work.
Children's Ministry
Teams coming to this community will participate in Kids Club! In this community, connecting with the local children through children's ministry is an important part of what we do each day. Experience Mission will provide the curriculum for your teams use. This Kids Club curriculum will be sent out to Team Leaders in the spring via email. Your team may be asked to participate in multiple Kids Clubs and avenues of ministering to children.
Teams will be responsible to bring the craft supplies needed for their specific crafts and should budget appropriately. While we do our best to make sure the craft materials are cost-effective, teams may feel free to augment any materials to make them more suitable for their budget. Experience Mission will supply scissors, staplers, and paper hole punches. There are plenty of opportunities to connect with local children through games like soccer or Frisbee. Tuck in a hackysack, football or jump rope as they are sure to come in handy.
*Experience Mission works closely with local leaders to identify work projects and ministry opportunities that address authentic needs within the community. We ask that you come with a servant's heart and willingness to adapt to the unique qualities represented in each location. Opportunities can vary significantly from one week to the next. Your team may work at one location or serve at multiple locations each day. Due to the changing needs of our community partners, we cannot confirm your specific activities until your team arrives.
Typical Schedule
Each morning, there is time set aside for devotions and quiet time. Each morning, there is time set aside for devotions and quiet time. This is a valuable time and we strongly encourage everyone to spend it with God journaling their thoughts and experiences as the days unfold. EM will provide a physical or printable devotional journal.
Our staff will lead a time of debriefing and a short devotional in the evening (what we call "Evening Gathering") and it is always a great addition to have musical worship. Our programming does not include musical worship as we can't guarantee that our our staff will have this ability. Please let us know if you have anyone who sings or plays guitar on your trip so that we can help to coordinate the musical aspect of worship when able. If teams aren't able to help in the area of music, it may not be a part of the trip.
Each day, there will be a varying schedule of work and outreach.

Your team will be using The Metro throughout your week in NYC and the cost will need to be covered by your team. Prices vary so you should check into the cost of a one-week Metro card & budget appropriately.

Short-Term Missions.
Long-term impact..
Group Mission Trips creates the perfect environment for youth and adults to build relationships and make a long-term impact while serving on short-term mission trips across the world.
“I have been taking High School aged youth on mission trips for approximately 20 years. Over the last 12 years I have used GMT. They are by far the best I have used. Their programing is Christ centered and thought provoking.”
Terry O'Hanlon
Workcamp Attendee
“Been on Group Mission Trips for about 15 years! It is a tremendous program and gets kids (and adults!) to participate actively in the expansion of God's Kingdom. The leadership, administration, and staff have been wonderful for each experience. My youth group (as well as myself) have been blessed continually throughout the years!”
“Summer 2019 was my first experience with GMT. I took a group of high schoolers to a South Dakota for home repair on a reservation, and a group of middle + high schoolers to Denver. Both trips were very organized and communication with staff was wonderful! We are excited to use Group again this year! ”
Emily Pearce
Workcamp Participant
“Group Mission Trips provides everything you need to have an amazing, life-changing service experience! Their professional, caring staff is there to guide you in every step of the process.... ”
Beth Taylor
“I've been on 6 mission trips with this organization and I have grown so much because of these experiences. I can not say enough good things about this company! Thank you Group Mission Trips! ”
Sydney Lewis
“One single review cannot describe the life-changing experience that can be had with GMT. Taking middle school and high school kids to an experience that is outside of 'normal' for most kids, helping revitalize communities, and meet people outside their current home and social media bubble is priceless... ”
Brian Anderson
“ I always found the trips well organized and managed, with staff that were dedicated to serving the community hosting the Workcamp, as well as the growth of the youth involved. Having seen the positive outcomes for all involved, I sought out opportunities to continue my involvement with Group Mission Trips after my son graduated from high school.”
Marvin Rasch
“I have worked with Group Mission Trips since the early 90s. Each and every summer it is such a blessing to serve others and help in various communities. There have been so many life changing events over the years. I would definitely recommend Group Mission Trips to others... ”
Phyllis Looker
“I attended workcamps as a youth and now all these years later my son gets to attend. I couldn't be happier with Group Mission Trips and the safe environment and Christ filled programming.
He and other teens with the help of two adults were able to build this amazing switchback wheelchair ramp in just 4.5 days!
What a blessing to the homeowner but more than that, the kids seemed to really connect to each other, and their resident.”
Ann Hardwood
Residents are helped, communities are strengthened, and lives are changed.

Boeing's Starliner to join exclusive spacecraft club with 1st astronaut launch today
The launch will mark just the sixth time ever that NASA astronauts have broken in a brand-new spacecraft.
Update, 9 p.m. EDT: Boeing Starliner's launch has been scrubbed due to a valve issue on the United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket. Here is the link to our scrub story .
Boeing's Starliner capsule will join a very exclusive club today (May 6), if all goes according to plan.
A United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket is set to launch Starliner and its two passengers, NASA astronauts Suni Williams and Butch Wilmore, from Florida's Cape Canaveral Space Force Station today at 10:34 p.m. EDT (0234 GMT on May 7). You can watch the action live at Space.com , courtesy of NASA.
The liftoff will kick off Crew Flight Test (CFT), a roughly 10-day shakeout cruise to the International Space Station (ISS) that will be Starliner's first-ever astronaut mission. Such crewed debuts to Earth orbit have happened just five times in American history, as NASA chief Bill Nelson noted during a press briefing on Friday (May 3).
"So, you think of it: The first time [NASA astronauts] have flown on a new spacecraft started with Mercury, then with Gemini, then with Apollo , then space shuttle, then Dragon and now Starliner," Nelson said. "So it is a historical day; it's a wonderful day."

Dragon is the capsule built by SpaceX , which, like Boeing, won a contract from NASA's Commercial Crew Program back in 2014 to carry agency astronauts to and from the ISS.

The goal was to get at least one American crewed vehicle up and running as soon as safely possible in the wake of the space shuttle 's 2011 retirement, which left NASA completely dependent on Russian Soyuz spacecraft for crewed transportation services to and from the ISS.
SpaceX launched its version of CFT, called Demo-2 , in May 2020. Elon Musk 's company has since completed seven operational astronaut missions to the station, and it's in the middle of its eighth, which launched in March . As that record shows, SpaceX has proven to be a reliable and prolific partner for NASA. But the agency is still excited to get a second American astronaut taxi online, given how complex and demanding human spaceflight is.
"This will give us that additional capability, because we always look for a backup," Nelson said.
If all goes well with CFT, Starliner could launch its first contracted, six-month crewed mission to the ISS as soon as early 2025.

CFT's launch will be historic in other ways as well. For example, it will be the first-ever astronaut liftoff for the venerable Atlas V, and the first crew-carrying mission for any member of the Atlas rocket family since May 15, 1963. On that day, an Atlas LV-3B launched Faith 7 , the final mission of the Mercury program, which sent NASA astronaut Gordon Cooper into orbit for 34 hours and 20 minutes.
Nelson also noted another special aspect of tonight's liftoff: It will mark the first time since the May 1968 launch of Apollo 7 that a crewed mission leaves Earth from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station (or, in its former incarnation, Cape Canaveral Air Force Station).
Many astronaut missions have lifted off from Florida's Space Coast since then, including those flown by NASA's space shuttle and SpaceX's Dragon. But those flights all launched from NASA's Kennedy Space Center , which is next door to Cape Canaveral Space Force Station.

- JeffCross You're article says that the Starliner will join an elite cadre of spacecraft crewed by NASA astronauts in space. It has one easy to understand but glaring error- it will not be the sixth, but the seventh. You have forgotten the Lunar Lander of the Apollo program. A total of 19 astronauts flew in it for extended periods. The odd number is the result of Apollo 13 bringing the crew of 3 back to Earth. Then there was the Skylab, that should count as a spacecraft hosting astronauts, and there is the ISS. Now, if you get more specific and state that it is the 6th spacecraft to launch NASA astronauts into orbit, the Lunar Lander did that too, tho it launched from the Moon not Earth. Reply
