Rainbow bridge national monument.

One of the natural wonders of the world, Rainbow Bridge has been formed by erosion of the sandstone by water flowing from Navajo Mountain towards the Colorado River. It is the largest natural bridge in the world at 290 feet/88 meters tall and 270 feet/83 meters across. Rainbow Bridge National Monument is considered sacred by the Navajo culture as a symbol of deities responsible for creating clouds, rainbows, and rain--the essence of life in the desert.

Rising up at the edge of Lake Powell, Rainbow Bridge may be reached by  private boat tour or power boat rental . Rainbow Bridge is located 50 boat miles northeast of Wahweap Marina. Lake Powell Resorts & Marinas, managed by Aramark Leisure, offers boat cruises daily from Wahweap Marina... tour offerings, schedules and pricing are listed below.

For those looking for a relaxing way to spend the entire day on Lake Powell and to experience the geologic and spiritual wonder of Rainbow Bridge, this tour offers you the opportunity to relax and take it all in. Your US Coast Guard licensed Captain and crew will host you as you skim along the smooth waters of Lake Powell, 50 miles up the original path of the Colorado River, from Wahweap Bay to Rainbow Bridge National Monument. En route, your crew will share with you, via public address system and personal discussions, many compelling stories rich in the cultural and natural history of this region. You will sail pass numerous famous landmarks, and witness first-hand the power of wind and water and their role in sculpting the remarkable landscape. The 3 hour up Lake Journey permits you time to explore why Glen Canyon is such a special place.

At Rainbow Bridge National Monument, you will walk a maintained, fairly easy trail round-trip 1.25-mile hike to Rainbow Bridge. The bridge itself reaches 290 feet into the sky, and it 270-foot span is supported on each side by its own canyon. While the bridge is visually amazing, your visit to the monument is also your opportunity to stand in the shadows of native peoples who have celebrated the spirit and sacredness of the place for centuries. You may wish to take the time to explore many of the meanings the monument has to share.

You will spend about 1 hour at the Bridge then make your return hike to the tour vessel. After departing, as your crew winds the vessel back through the canyons and waterways, you may hear more stories regarding this region's human and natural history.

While the tour returns to Wahweap via the same route, the homeward journey permits you to hear more of the crew's stories, spend time talking to others, relax and absorb for yourself the day's experience, or make your own additional discoveries as the vessel heads for port.

Canyon Adventure Boat Tour on Lake Powell

NAVAJO CANYON BOAT TOUR

Spend half of a day on Lake Powell exploring the richness of color found in this region by taking a tour of the Lake's "Navajo Tapestry". This tour leaves Wahweap Bay, following the original path of the mighty Colorado River to Navajo Canyon, located on the Navajo Nation.

During your journey to the side canyons, your US Coast Guard licensed crew will share with you, via public address system and personal discussions, many compelling stories rich in the cultural and natural history of this region. You will pass a number of famous landmarks, including Glen Canyon Dam.

Approximately four miles past the Dam your crew will point out the entrance to Antelope Canyon by water. This high-walled Navajo Sandstone side-arm of Lake Powell is famous for not only its coloration but also for its slot canyons, found at its head, about two miles east. During heavy summer rain, this canyon is known to experience flash flooding, due to its narrow width and high walls. Antelope Canyon has become a popular kayak destination !

You will sail another 6 miles up the lake to Navajo Canyon, an exciting example of "Navajo Tapestry", the mix of colors found on its sandstone walls. Deep purples, burnt reds & oranges, and shiny blues are created by a natural mineral process, resulting in a "tapestry" of visual experience. This special patina takes centuries to form and is in a constant state of change.

While the tour returns to Wahweap via the same route, the homeward journey permits you to hear more of the crew's stories, spend time talking with others, relax and absorb for yourself the day's experience, or make your own additional discoveries as the vessel heads for port.

Rainbow Bridge National Monument "Custom Tours"

We offer escorted tours by boat to Rainbow Bridge National Monument, the largest and most beautiful natural bridge in the world. Depending on the water level and boat used, this is a 3 to 6 hour boat tour. This custom tour is uaually part of one of our "Custom Day Tours" or part of a longer multi-day Custom Tour. Our escorted Rainbow Bridge tour can be part of a larger group tour on a large size boat or it can be on a smaller size speed boat. When the lake is high, very little or no walking is require to get to the bridge by boat. In very low water years a one way hike of up to 3/4 of a mile is required. But the walk is more than worth the effort. It is a spectacular span of sandstone perfectly carved into an elegant natural bridge.

Located in an isolated canyon at the feet of Navajo Mountain, Rainbow Bridge was known for centuries by the ancient Pueblo people, who considered the bridge to be sacred. Much later, Paiute and Navajo groups named the bridge Nonnezoshe or "rainbow turned to stone." Several Native American families still reside somewhat near the area.

By the 1800s, Rainbow Bridge had been seen by wandering trappers, prospectors, and cowboys.  Its existence was not publicized to the outside world until 1909. Two separate exploration parties - one headed by University of Utah dean Byron Cummings, and another by government surveyor, W.B. Douglass - began searching for the legendary span. Eventually, they combined efforts. Paiute guides Nasja Begay and Jim Mike led the way, along with trader and explorer John Wetherill. Late in the afternoon of August 15, 1909, coming down what is now Bridge Canyon, the party saw Rainbow Bridge for the first time.

The next year, on May 30, 1910, U.S. President William Howard Taft used a presidential proclamation to designate Rainbow Bridge National Monument. Teddy Roosevelt and Zane Grey were among the first visitors to make the trek by foot and horseback from Navajo Mountain. Rainbow Bridge became more accessible with the popularity of river running in Glen Canyon after World War II, although the trip still required several days floating the Colorado River plus a seven-mile hike up-canyon. By the early 1950s, people could travel upstream by jet boat from Lee's Ferry. Glen Canyon Dam was authorized in 1956. By 1963, the gates on the dam closed and rising Lake Powell began to engulf the river and its side canyons. Higher water made motorboat access to Rainbow Bridge much easier, bringing thousands of visitors to the monument each year.

Lake Powell, named after Major John Wesley Powell, a one-armed Civil War veteran who explored the river area in 1869, lies partly in Northern Arizona and mostly in Southern Utah. Its scenery is no less than spectacular, with unadulterated red sandstone cliffs and monuments reflecting with a shimmering golden glow in the deep blue water; spires, ridges, and buttes that once soared high above the Colorado River, now lone islands isolated by the crystal clear water; and beaches of rosy sand tenderly lapped by gentle rippling waves.

Rainbow Bridge National Monument: How to Visit the World’s Largest Natural Bridge

Rainbow Bridge National Monument is located deep in the heart of Lake Powell, accessed only via a very long and remote hike or via a 50-mile each-way boat ride. It is a place I have wanted to see for a long time, so I made the trip to Page, AZ and booked my ticket for the whole day adventure to the world’s largest freestanding bridge. Here is all the information if you want to see it as well and let me know what questions you have in the comments.

Getting There and Reservations

rainbow bridge monument boat tour

I planned my 7-day Arizona trip around being able to do this boat tour, so we left on a Friday and drove to Page, then woke up the following day to get on the boat. I got tickets about a month in advance, but it wasn’t essential in the winter as only eight people were on our big boat.

rainbow bridge monument boat tour

The boat we went on can hold up to 45 people, and in the summer, they said they use the bigger boats and can have up to 145 people on board. I can’t imagine how busy it would be at the bridge during that season with all the personal boats on the water, too. The boat had a bathroom, and they had coffee, lemonade, and water on the way over and lunch sandwiches on the way back.

rainbow bridge monument boat tour

It takes about 2.5 hours from the starting point to the dock near the bridge. On the way, you will go through some of the most beautiful land I have ever seen. It felt like seeing a lesser Monument Valley with all of the staggering rock formations you saw from the water.

rainbow bridge monument boat tour

I expected it to be a long ride, but I was on the edge of my seat. It was a massive highlight for me and something I was not expecting on the trip. Rainbow Bridge is, of course, the main attraction, but cruising the lake is a highlight as well.

rainbow bridge monument boat tour

After crossing through multiple bays and more canyons than you could count, we reached the mouth of the Forbidden Canyon, which took us toward Rainbow Bridge.

rainbow bridge monument boat tour

This canyon was narrow and stunning. It had water that was like glass and lots of unique rock formations as we made our way back. Only a small sign noted the Rainbow Bridge National Monument entrance, so if you come in a personal boat, be sure to know where you are going.

rainbow bridge monument boat tour

After bending through the canyon, we arrived at the dock and unloaded to start the 2-mile round-trip hike to Rainbow Bridge. The hike has some uphill, but it’s not too challenging, and the canyon you are walking in is breathtaking.

rainbow bridge monument boat tour

After 3-4 bends, the canyon finally opens up, and you get your first view of Rainbow Bridge in the distance.

rainbow bridge monument boat tour

As you hike closer, you will see how massive this bridge is. The bridge is 290 feet tall and spans over 275 feet across.

rainbow bridge monument boat tour

You cannot go under the bridge as it is of spiritual significance to the Navajo people, but you can walk up to a viewing area on one side, climb up a small hill, and over to another viewing platform on the other.

rainbow bridge monument boat tour

We had 1.5 hours here, with about 30 minutes of hiking each way and then 30 minutes at the arch.

rainbow bridge monument boat tour

It is one of those places where you must see it yourself to believe it.

rainbow bridge monument boat tour

After returning to the boat, we started the 2.5-hour ride back to the main dock. We went fast this time but got many excellent views of the rock formations as we cruised Lake Powell.

rainbow bridge monument boat tour

I was blown away by how beautiful this experience was, and I highly recommend it if you get a chance. It’s a full day, but it is a place I will never forget. Let me know what you think in the comments.

Considered sacred in Navajo culture, Rainbow Bridge is a symbol of deities responsible for creating rain, the essence of life in the desert. Before the construction of Glen Canyon Dam formed Lake Powell, Rainbow Bridge National Monument was a remote destination requiring a multi-day hike from Navajo Mountain. Now, Lake Powell water level brings visitors within one-quarter to 2 miles of Rainbow Bridge, yet this impressive Utah natural bridge still feels a world apart. Rainbow Bridge National Monument is the tallest natural bridge in the world. It is roughly the sixth longest. Carved from red Navajo sandstone, the bridge is 290 feet tall and 270 feet across — higher than the United States Capitol Building — and nearly as long as a football or soccer field.

Getting There

Rising up at the mouth of Bridge Canyon, in a cove on Lake Powell, you can reach the bridge by personal boats and watercraft, or  boat cruises  offered daily from Halls Crossing or Bullfrog Marinas north of Glen Canyon National Recreation Area or Wahweap Marina near the Arizona border. On your cruise, you'll navigate among miles of Lake Powell's curiously sculpted slickrock shores, high up in Glen Canyon. There is no question as to the erosive power of water. Yet water sometimes carves with whimsy and precision. In this way, Rainbow Bridge is more than a symbol of life in the desert — it is the desert come alive.

At full pool, nearly 50 feet of water fill in below Rainbow Bridge, giving dictionary meaning to the monument, which may be erroneously referred to as Rainbow Arch. (Arches have no active water flow while bridges span a watercourse.) Check current  Lake Powell water levels  here.

With a permit from the Navajo Nation, you can also follow a historic trail on foot or by horseback. Trails exceed 13 miles in length and require good preparation and wayfinding skills (i.e., compass, map, GPS, overnight gear and lots of water).

Due to its remote location on Lake Powell, visiting Rainbow Bridge requires more planning than most Utah national monuments. Before the reservoir, it took a multiday hike (still on option with a permit from the Navajo Nation.). Now, visitors can book a tour or rent a motorized watercraft to the trailhead. There is primitive  camping  and developed campgrounds in Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, but not within the boundaries of Rainbow Bridge.

Rainbow Bridge National Monument - All You Need to Know BEFORE You Go (2024)

rainbow bridge monument boat tour

Boat tours to Rainbow Bridge National Monument are back, thanks to a fuller Lake Powell

The main trail leads from the boat dock at Lake Powell to Rainbow Bridge, seen here in a photo from July 16, 2010.

For the first time since 2021, Lake Powell’s water levels have risen enough to restart boat tours to Rainbow Bridge National Monument in southern Utah.

That means tourists can visit the isolated red rock arch by hiking a short trail — roughly one mile each way — from a boat dock. Without access from Lake Powell, the only other way to visit the arch is a strenuous hike that’s more than 30 miles round-trip.

As Lake Powell’s water levels declined in recent years, the availability of this boat dock drastically changed Rainbow Bridge’s visitor numbers.

More than 115,000 people traveled to Rainbow Bridge National Monument in 2019 — back when boat dock access made it easier.

Last year, the monument had just 81 visitors .

rainbow bridge monument boat tour

Lake levels sank to new record lows in the first few months of 2023, pushed to the brink by a decades-long drought and the water demands of thirsty farms and cities.

But the abundant snowmelt rushing into Lake Powell this spring and summer elevated water levels by nearly 65 feet , enough to re-open several boat ramps around America’s second-largest reservoir.

In late July, after nearly two years, the boat tours resumed.

Judy Franz, executive director of the Page-Lake Powell Chamber of Commerce, said that’s a big deal for local tourism.

“Everyone is very excited,” Franz said. “We've had a tremendous amount of response.”

Franz, who also helps run the Lake Powell visitor center , said she expects the return of the boat tours to particularly attract international tourists. In 2019 when visitor numbers were at their peak, Rainbow Bridge National Monument contributed $4.3 million to the Utah economy.

At 290 feet tall, Rainbow Bridge is one of the largest known natural bridges in the world. But for the Navajo and other tribes who have called the region home for countless generations, it is also a sacred place.

Effie Yazzie, park manager at the Lake Powell Navajo Tribal Park , said the Navajo believe that Rainbow Bridge is a living thing that breathes just like humans do. So, the Navajo ask that visitors not walk under the bridge.

“If you take the time to visit something, please have respect for it. And please have respect for the people who have ties to the area that hold those structures sacred.”

The backpackers who take the longer hike to Rainbow Bridge through Navajo land in far southern Utah must get a permit from Navajo Nation Parks . Most of them, Yazzie said, are careful about not disturbing the natural surroundings.

But as boat access opens Rainbow Bridge to more visitors, there are concerns about them bringing in trash, going off trail or otherwise disrupting the site.

Some tribal members, she said, have mixed feelings about opening Rainbow Bridge up to a bigger crowd.

“Yes, we are concerned about having too many people there,” Yazzie said. “For those that are coming from the lake and boats, they just need to be considerate of these beautiful places and not pollute it in any manner. That's what we ask.”

It’s part of a broader challenge whenever thousands of people gather in delicate natural areas.

Franz from the Lake Powell chamber said some lake visitors still carve their initials into the red sandstone rock. Her husband, who runs a fishing business, often spends time picking up trash that tourists have thrown overboard into the lake.

“That's an ongoing problem,” Franz said. “The whole concept of ‘leave no trace’ is so important.”

The floating dock leads visitors from Lake Powell toward Rainbow Bridge National Monument in southern Utah, July 16, 2010

The boat tour ferries visitors on the seven-hour, 50-mile journey three days a week for $135 per adult. The booking calendar is open into the early fall, and Franz is confident water levels will stay high enough to allow tours to run through that time.

“We'll be OK this year,” Franz said. “And we're praying for another heavy winter.”

But the tour’s long-term future may be up in the air.

Despite the extra runoff from the wet winter, Lake Powell only gained enough water for levels to recover to where they were in 2021 . Although water levels remain roughly 60 feet higher now than they were earlier this year, the levels have already begun to decline.

As climate change ramps up extreme heat across the Southwest, evaporation is likely to gobble up more and more of Lake Powell’s water. To plan for a future with less water, the National Park Service wants to build new structures at the Rainbow Bridge dock to allow for lake access at lower water levels.

But even if boat access once again disappears, Yazzie of Navajo Nation Parks invites seasoned hikers to experience the longer trek to Rainbow Bridge that few people get to see.

“It's harder to get to, but it makes up for it. … It's a very beautiful area.”

The fortunate town of Page in Arizona is a must-stop on any West Coast tour that wants to truly define itself: the number of natural attractions in its surroundings is so high that two full days wouldn’t be enough to visit them all. Lake Powell is undoubtedly one of them: we can confidently say that, along with Antelope Canyon and Horseshoe Bend , this artificially created reservoir with unforgettable colors is the symbol of Page.

But what, in turn, is the symbol of Lake Powell ? It’s hard to answer, given the great number of unforgettable sceneries, starting with the mysterious and unreachable Reflection Canyon ! However, when talking about Lake Powell, one cannot avoid mentioning the legendary and mysterious Rainbow Bridge , hidden in a remote area of the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area .

What is the Rainbow Bridge? Characteristics and History

Rainbow bridge national monument boat tour, rainbow bridge national monument hike, where to stay.

What is the Rainbow Bridge?

With its span of 275 feet and a height of 308 feet, Rainbow Bridge stands in the realm of the world’s largest natural bridges, competing with other natural wonders in the USA and Asia. From a geological perspective, we’re talking about a Navajo Sandstone bridge resting on a base of Kayenta Sandstone, carved over millions of years by weathering agents.

Originally, the river (Bridge Creek) that flowed along the bed of what is now known as Rainbow Bridge Canyon created a meander that cut through the plateau. Over the millennia, the river changed its course and, aided by wind action, carved and shaped the bridge. Today, we see it in its most glorious form, but in some future era, the same weathering agents will likely test its endurance and cause the structure to collapse.

Considered a sacred site by the native tribes of the area , the natural bridge was previously known by the Navajo name Nonnezoshe (“rainbow turned to stone”). Discovered in the 19th century by explorers and cowboys, the arch remained unknown to the public until 1909 . The following year, President William Howard Taft proclaimed it a National Monument.

rainbow bridge lake powell

The “unfortunate news” is that this exceptional natural monument is not exactly easy to reach . Rainbow Bridge is hidden in a remote meander in the southern Utah portion of Lake Powell, within the boundaries of the Navajo Nation . Despite being on native territory, the area where the bridge is located is an integral part of the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area and, as mentioned earlier, has been a separate National Monument for over a century (one of the smallest in the entire National Park Service), known as Rainbow Bridge National Monument .

How to Get to the Rainbow Bridge National Monument

How to Get to the Rainbow Bridge National Monument

Ci sono solo due modi di raggiungere il Rainbow Bridge: in barca e a piedi.

There are only two ways to reach Rainbow Bridge: by boat and on foot.

The most common way to reach the Bridge Canyon meander is through a guided boat tour. You’ll embark on a lengthy journey (approximately 50 miles!) aboard a vessel departing from Wahweap Marina, the main port of Lake Powell (also the most frequented by tourists due to its easy accessibility and proximity to Page). The boat will take you to the dock where a boardwalk leads to the canyon’s entrance. From there, a walk of less than a mile will bring you to the arch, allowing you to marvel at its magnificence. In total, you’ll need to walk approximately 2 miles round trip. CAUTION ! During certain times of the year, the cruise may not be available due to the lowering of the lake’s water levels, making navigation to the meander impossible.

Book the Rainbow Bridge Boat Tour

If you don’t want to join the crowd and know how to operate a boat, it is possible to rent a motorboat at the marina during certain months of the year and independently reach the dock. Here is a link for more information.

This section of the article should only be of interest to experienced hikers who have plenty of time available . There are two very long and challenging hikes that start from Navajo territory in Utah, far from Page, at the base of the nearby Navajo Mountain: one on the southern slope and one on the northeastern slope of the mountain. To reach the respective trailheads, a 4×4 vehicle is required as the routes involve driving on unpaved roads that are not always in good condition.

In both cases, in addition to the length and technical difficulty, it’s important to consider that the hike is entirely exposed to the sun . Moreover, in summer, there is a real risk of encountering a flash flood, and in winter, it is not advisable to venture onto the trail if the ground is wet. The best time to undertake these hikes is from March to mid-May , as well as the autumn months (October-November).

You will need two or three days to complete the round trip . In addition to wearing appropriate clothing and carrying plenty of supplies, you will need to plan for one or more nights of camping. Obtaining a permit from the Navajo is necessary for camping, and a permit is also required to hike on the trail.

Rainbow Bridge Boat Tour

Lake Powell – Glen Canyon National Recreation Area By Lynn Bremner

The first leg of our summer hiking trip began at Lake Powell Resort & Marina. It’s located right on Lake Powell, and was the perfect choice for our first adventure, a boat tour and hike to Rainbow Bridge National Monument.

rainbow bridge monument boat tour

Rainbow Bridge National Monument is located in a remote area between the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area and the Navajo Nation. It’s one of the largest natural bridges in the world, measuring 290′ high and 275’wide.  The easiest way to reach it is by boat.

Our tour started at 7:30 AM and was expected to last approximately six hours. We packed a lunch and took plenty of water with us. The tour met at the Waheap Marina adjacent to the resort to assemble for the excursion.  Though the weather was cool at that hour, we knew it would get a lot hotter later on in the day.

rainbow bridge monument boat tour

We chose to sit inside, on the lower deck, which provided more shade.  The scenery along the way was spectacular; the sandstone rock and desertscape was a dramatic contrast to the cool blue water of Lake Powell. Photo opportunities were plentiful along the 50-mile route.  We thought it was a great way to spend time on the lake, and enjoyed cruising along, taking in the view.

rainbow bridge monument boat tour

Finally the engines slowed and we entered the canyon, navigating through a narrow passageway to the dock at the trailhead to Rainbow Bridge. We disembarked and made our way to the trail. It was hot at that hour and while the hike was short, just 1.25-miles roundtrip, it was uphill and sandy in areas, making it a slow ascent.

As we made our way around each turn on the trail, the bridge slowly came into sight.  I snapped a lot of photos as we approached. Once at the top we just stood and took in the view of Rainbow Bridge.  It was stunning.

rainbow bridge monument boat tour

There are several vantage points with great tableaus of the bridge.  The closest area to the bridge is also the location of a dinosaur footprint.  Scientists believe it’s a Dilophosaurus footprint. We imagined what it would have been like to witness a dinosaur walking through the canyon 190-200 millions years ago.

We had about 30 minutes to take in the scenery and enjoy experiencing Rainbow Bridge.  The tour guide spoke about its history and geology. It was originally a “fin” of sandstone that Bridge Creek wrapped around as the water moved towards the Colorado River.  Water and sediment wore away the sandstone fin, eventually boring a hole through it and forming the famous bridge.

It was time to head back to the boat.  The hike down the trail was much easier than the way up had been.  We sat on the outside deck of the boat for the journey back to the resort.  It was fun to see the lake views from a different perspective.  The fresh air and remarkable landscape continued to inspire us all the way back to the dock.

If you go …

Rainbow Bridge is in a remote location and can only be accessed by boat or by hiking several days on foot.   If you go on foot, you’ll need to get backcountry permits from the Navajo Nation.

The boat tour we booked was through the Lake Powell Resort & Marina.  The boat leaves from Waheap Marina, located at the resort. Check their website for tour rates and schedules.  You’ll need to pack your own lunch and food.  The tour does provide water, coffee and lemonade.

Update: No Dock Access to Rainbow Bridge   Date Posted: 10/21/2021 –  Alert 4, Severity closure, No Dock Access to Rainbow Bridge.  No dock access to the shoreline at Rainbow Bridge due to low water. Boats and small vessels beach at your own risk. While no longer connected to the shoreline, the docks will still be accessible with restroom facilities. Winter trail crews will rebuild. Boat Tours on Lake Powell

Lake powell, az & ut.

If there’s one thing you must do at Lake Powell, it is be to see the iconic landscapes of beautiful canyons and rocky ridges that are so unique to this region. And there are a plethora of opportunities to do so. Kayaking, stand up paddleboarding, renting a motorboat or houseboat or pontoon boat, or—if it’s more your speed—a boat tour operated out of Lake Powell Resort.

There are five options for chartered boat experiences, and each have their benefits.

The Antelope Canyon Tour brings visitors to the south end of Lake Powell to explore the mesmerizing color palette of oranges, reds and browns that are typical of this region. Highlighted on the tour are famous slot canyons, and the Glen Canyon Dam, the second largest concrete arch dam in the country.

The Canyon Adventure Tour, as you’d expect, brings through the best canyons in Lake Powell, Antelope Canyon as well as Navajo Canyon, allowing passengers to see the towering sandstone geology as it rises over 600 feet into the sky above. In addition, get a glimpse of Glen Canyon dam, and the 50/50 wall, an enormous rock that is half in, half out of the water. The sight is spellbinding.

The Panoramic Lake Powell Tour brings passengers into the heart of the lake, immersing you into the widespread, beautiful landscapes of Lake Powell, including the rich scenery of Gunsight Bay, while learning about the geology and history of the region. This is the best way to get to the core of the Lake Powell experience.

The Rainbow Bridge Tour carries guests on a Lake cruise over 50 miles of beautiful shoreline and views, all leading up to an up close and personal experience with one of the largest natural land bridges in the world, the Rainbow Bridge Monument. This massive arch, over 290 feet high and crossing a 275 foot span of lake, is a stunning sight. And feeling the power of the wind and water that carved it firsthand is something you’ll never forget.

The Private Boat Tour is a smaller, more intimate tour that brings you and a group (max six people total) through the snaking waterways of Lost Eden, a narrow, flooded canyon. Hearing the calm quiet of the canyons (broken with the inevitable yell “ECHO!!”, and the reverberation that follows) and seeing the canyons jut up above your heads, makes this tour completely unique and awesome. Private Boat Tours are operated from Bullfrog Marina.

  • How To See Rainbow Bridge By Boat.

Me, admiring Rainbow Bridge at first view before approaching

If you have read articles or watched Youtube videos on trips to Rainbow Bridge by boat, chances are they are based on the period before Lake Powell’s water levels really declined. This trip occurred in March 2022 so you should be reading fairly recent info based on my publishing date. I hope to upload the YouTube video on this recent experience soon!

We wanted to see Rainbow Bridge by boat from Lake Powell. It happened to be at one of its lowest levels: 3523.53 feet since it started decreasing back in 2001. Its normal capacity is 3700 feet.

How to see Rainbow Bridge by Boat from Page, Arizona

We had to dock the boat on the shoreline and hike through some interesting terrain about three miles to the boat dock at the monument. This blog will tell you how to visit Rainbow Bridge National Monument at Lake Powell and what to expect for your boating trip. I will share our journey which started at Wahweap Marina in Page, Arizona.

This was Day One of my first time visiting Lake Powell and Utah itself. Be sure to keep reading for the tips and resources.

Where is Rainbow Bridge National Monument on Lake Powell?

Rainbow Bridge was established as a national monument in 1910 and is located in Forbidding Canyon, in Utah. This beautiful arch spans 275 feet with a height of 246 ft, standing as the tallest natural bridge in North America and the second tallest in the world after the Xianren Bridge (aka Fairy Bridge) in China.  It is located between the 49 and 50-mile marker on Lake Powell. If you are arriving from Wahweap Marina, it will be on your right. Directional signs will lead you to the monument; in our case, to the muddy shoreline a few miles out. We traveled with a friend, Captain Scott, an experienced Captain who has lived in Page, Arizona most of his life. The last time he had been to Rainbow Bridge was almost a year ago.

4 Reasons Why You Should See Rainbow Bridge by Boat.

You can visit this beauty by land but this is a 30-32 mile round trip hike and you will need to plan for a couple of overnights along the way. Plus, you will need to purchase a pass from Navajo Nation. I haven’t hiked it but I understand this is not a hike for beginners.

As you may have guessed by now: There are no roads to Rainbow Bridge.

Reason #1 : A boating round trip can be done in one day. Reason #2 : The second reason to see Rainbow Bridge by boat is that, aside from your boat rental and gas, getting to Rainbow Bridge is free. There is no admission and no permit needed to dock your boat there.

Reason #3 : The lower water levels revealed incredible canyon walls and artifacts from activities going back several decades. We also spotted shipwrecks, oars and a Pepsi cola can from the ’70s.

Reason #4 : Your sanity. Being on or near water is therapeutic and good for stress.

We didn’t even know if we were going to be able to see Rainbow Bridge until we got there. We had to safely get off the boat without sinking in the muddy quicksand. Keep reading! Fortunately, we made it work, but if you stop and turn around, you will at least come away with beautiful lake memories!

If you are looking for a relaxing experience, depending on when you go, the stillness and beautiful colors of the lake will make this a trip you will never forget.  Past Antelope Canyon Marina, you may get the entire lake and Rainbow Bridge to yourselves as we did!

Should You Visit Rainbow Bridge During This Period of Low Water Levels at Lake Powell?

It depends on how adventurous you are. I’m not a huge risk taker and I have a fear of drowning.  I went in half-blind, not fully prepared for this trip since I agreed to go last minute. But knowing we had an experienced captain taking us, put me more at ease. Looking back now, I am so glad I did.

Sometimes ignorance frees you up to enjoy the journey.

At the time we were there and while I write this, boat tours to Rainbow Bridge were and still are, canceled. As of July 30, 2022, the water level was down 17.68 feet from one year prior. (Source: Lake Powell Water Database )  I recommend renting a speed boat but if you are not an experienced boater, hire a charter with a captain.

Note: There was no gas fills en route to Forbidding Canyon so you need a boat with at least a 50-gallon tank to make the round trip from Wahweap Marina. The boat we took had a 60-gallon tank so we were good.

The National Parks Services website will give you updates. In March 2022 (and at the time I am writing this), due to low water levels of Lake Powell, they warned: “No dock access to the shoreline of Rainbow Bridge. Boats and small vessels beach at your own risk”.

Well, we did but we went with an experienced captain, prepared with safety precautions. You can check status updates on Rainbow Bridge and the boat launches at the marinas here: https://www.nps.gov/rabr/planyourvisit/index.htm

The Wahweap main boat launch was closed so we had to use the Auxiliary Launch Ramp.

Keep reading for tips and recommended supplies to prepare for your boat trip and hike to Rainbow Bridge.

How to See Rainbow Bridge by Boat from Wahweap Marina, Arizona.

Ok now that you read this far, you may agree that boating your way to Rainbow Bridge is a good choice. You can approach Forbidding Canyon from the north (Bullfrog Marina) or from the south (Wahweap Marina in Page, Arizona), as we did.

This is how to see Rainbow Bridge by boat from Wahweap Marina. It is a 50-mile journey along the shorelines. We left the Auxiliary State Line Launch Ramp at 7 am (when it was really chilly)  and returned at 5:30 pm (when the sun just finished beating down on us). It took about 3-4 hours to get there, including stops for photo ops and bathroom breaks at Antelope Canyon Marina and a few floating toilets (they were surprisingly clean). We spent about 3 hours hiking in, enjoying the monument, and hustling back to the boat before the afternoon winds kicked up. We returned to Wahweap around 5:30 pm, hungry, and tired, some of us sunburned but exhilarated from the day’s experience.

Prepare for a long day if you want to soak in the sights of Rainbow Bridge and the incredible canyon views from the water.

How Long is the Hike to Rainbow Bridge from the Boat Dock?

At the end of March 2022, we had to dock the boat at the shoreline- 2.5 to 3 miles from the monument, due to decreasing water levels.

Things to Know About Hiking to Rainbow Bridge from the Shoreline- Our Adventure Began Here.

rainbow bridge monument boat tour

If you want to see Rainbow Bridge by Boat, kick off your sandals and put on your water-resistant shoes when you dock at the shoreline. Make sure you check to see how far your feet or legs will sink into the mud to determine if this journey to the bridge is safe. Captain Scott got us all safely off the boat and onto shore but we had 3 more obstacles to pass: the first one was not even 20 feet from the shoreline. It was a muddy soft path right by the canyon wall. We almost turned around but found a solution.

rainbow bridge monument boat tour

We Found Wreckage From a WWII Aircraft Which Came in Handy!

We found what Captain Scott figured was wreckage from landing strips from a WWII airplane. They were coated with quagga mussels and looked like they could crumble in your hands. They had some firmness left so we laid them down over the shallow mud river and one by one made a run for it. Only one of the big guys in the group slipped off and sunk a leg to mid-calf in the mud. So overall we did well!

rainbow bridge monument boat tour

Next, we encountered the narrow soft white sand bank next to the low canyon wall. Some of us had to crawl on hands and knees. Taller individuals and those wearing backpacks will find this more challenging. Slipping off this bank meant you could tumble into the quicksand mud river.

Finally before the solid hike to the Rainbow bridge: crossing the actual river further down, hopping stones, and using our walking sticks to gauge the ground’s softness before stepping. This was the easiest crossing since canyon walls do not confine you.

Tips for Your Hike to Rainbow Bridge from Lake Powell:

The best way to do this is to walk quickly and tighten your core to keep your weight resistance down. Make sure you cross a different path from the person in front of you. The terrain softens more after each person walks over it.  You will need to cross these same points back to your boat so keep this in mind.

Double anchor your boat if the shoreline is really soft and muddy AND especially if the winds pick up. You don’t want to return from the bridge to find your boat sailed away.

After the river crossing, it’s a beautiful, easy-to-moderate hike to Rainbow Bridge.

Distant view of Rainbow Bridge 1/2 mile away

What to See at Rainbow Bridge and During Your Hike from Shoreline.

There are no toilets or recreational facilities at Rainbow Bridge, so stop at the last floating toilet before Forbidding Canyon.

If you plan to see Rainbow Bridge by boat, be prepared to dock at the shoreline, approximately 2-3 miles away from the monument. Once you arrived at where boats once docked you will walk on the paved walkway within view of the bridge. Around the last corner you will end up on a trail and the Bridge will be right in front of you. You will see a couple of sun shelters with benches, a few signs, and information about the Navajo land. There are a couple of paths to walk around however there is a sign advising visitors to avoid walking under the bridge out of respect for the Navajos.

Past the bridge, you will see the majestic Navajo Mountain (snow-covered when we were there in March). See the photo above.

It was so quiet and serene. Only five of us, the bridge, and whatever animals and reptiles were nearby. Soak it all in and take tons of photos. Depending on the season, the afternoon sun brings out the bold colors, but you want to leave well before dark since desert animals and critters start surfacing and the winds pick up.

Be Aware of Your Surroundings.

I interviewed Captain Scott a month after this trip for the blog and he revealed to me that he spotted signs of recent activity by rattlesnakes, mountain sheep, and beavers. He didn’t see any imminent danger so he didn’t alarm us during the hike, which now I realize why he kept insisting we stay on the paths.

How to “Plan and Pack” for Your Boating Trip to Rainbow Bridge.

A well-equipped boat, with all the emergency and maintenance supplies. Bring a waterproof bag to seal your contents inside. Clothing layers including a jacket for the boat. A sun-protective hat – I prefer the Omni-Shade protection from Columbia which has never failed me, including their sun-protective shirts. They are moisture-wicking. You definitely want a hat with a drawstring to keep it on your head on the boat and in gusty winds. Sunglasses – polarized and full coverage for your vision. Sunscreen, I wore this mineral-based sunscreen on delicate skin areas (neck, ears, face). Right now, For body protection, I recommend this SPF50- sun and sport mineral-based sunscreen. Chums for your sunglasses so you don’t lose your glasses to the wind. Water shoes or waterproof hiking shoes. That day I wore a version of these Columbia water shoes which gave me a good grip and dried fast. However, I just started wearing the Escape Thrive Ultra Trail Running Shoes and so far, I love them for stability and grip on rough and dirty terrain. Drinking Water Extra supply of food to leave in the boat, including a cooler with ice.

Use a wrist strap tether for your phone – the winds on the boat ride can whip your phone right out of your hand. 36800 mAh Solar, waterproof backup battery charger – one that also has a flashlight.

Walking or hiking poles . I use the Urban Poling Urban Poles Series 300 (pictured above) for the best ergonomic grip, and stability. These are the aluminum Nordic walking sticks for fitness and sport. The stability “Activator poles” from Urban Poling are most popular with my patients who have any hip issues, back pain, or brain challenges. All Urban Poling products are lightweight and I love the interchangeable tips. We forgot our hiking poles but were lucky to find sticks at the shoreline, likely left behind by previous visitors and we did the same in return for the next ones!

In your backpack:

First aid kit. Your medications, including inhalers and antihistamines in case of a bite or sting. Kinesiotape – because you may need this in case of an ankle or knee sprain, for example. Don’t take chances- get the extra sticky water resistant because of sweat and water exposure. Scissors are in the first aid kit, linked above. Electrolytes : Bringing a rehydration formula is essential because especially in the hot sun, you will lose minerals through sweat faster than you can replace with just your food and water. Avoid headaches, muscle cramping, and passing out with clean-sourced electrolytes. They should include amino acids for tissue support during activity. My only recommendation currently is the one my patients and I use, ATP Ignite from Xymogen . It is NATURALLY sweetened with stevia (comes in citrus or mixed berry) and also contains antioxidants, glutathione, amino acids, and caffeine combined with pterostilbene for higher bioavailability (similar to resveratrol) and longer caffeine effect. This is great for people trying to reduce coffee intake. You can get this on my Wholescripts store (register HERE) and use the one-time coupon code: NA05-DIAS for 5% off your entire order. Here, you can also shop over 100 quality brand nutritional products.

Snacks: food bars, trail mix, grass-fed beef jerky sticks .

Include some Himalayan Pink or Sea salt crystals to pop in your mouth when your muscles ache and your body gets tired.

Your own garbage bag. Flashlight/ headband flashlight – to stay hands-free when needed. Lifestraw in case you need to draw from a river source.

Emergency Weather Radio with a flashlight, SOS siren, solar-powered emergency radio with a hand crank, and USB ports to charge your gadgets. I bring this on all road trips.

Extra pair of socks. Bear horn – it has a sound level of 115 decibels heard half a mile away. You may want this in case you find yourself at close range with coyotes or grumpy mountain sheep.

About Communications and Signal:

There is no cell service at the Rainbow Bridge. On the lake, the service is very spotty.

Tip: It is best to save battery power and keep your phone on airplane mode until you really need it.

Things to Know about Rainbow Bridge.

Rainbow Bridge is in Navajo Nation. This is a sacred, religious site. There are signs requesting we refrain from approaching or walking under the bridge. Please pick up after yourself and leave no trace.

There is a dinosaur footprint near the base of the bridge. Look carefully on the slated path.

The best time to go is as early as possible in the day. Season-wise it will depend on whether or not boat tours are operating again (not likely for a long time due to the water levels).

Parks Passport Holders: If you are traveling from Wahweap Marina, you can get your passport stamped at the Glen Canyon Conservancy office in Page, AZ, and the Glen Canyon Dam Visitors Center if it’s open. You can also check the other marinas.

Many people are wondering how much work is involved in taking your own boat trip to Rainbow Bridge. I won’t lie; it is a full-day event and not for the weary. Although the sun beats down on you, the boat ride is most relaxing when the waters are calm.

If you end up boating and then hiking to Rainbow Bridge let me know in the comments below! Did you enjoy the journey? Feel free to share your own experience whether you hiked through Navajo territory or ventured on the lake to Rainbow Bridge!

If you are over the age of 40, you may certainly feel the stress and challenges of this kind of excursion. Visit my blog page to see how I overcome these challenges and what inspires me to get out there.
