Moto-Trek X-Cite G 2016

moto trek x cite for sale

By Jack Bancroft Published: December 16, 2015

A 3500kg ’van packing a large garage and a slide-out sounds like a game-changer – read Practical Motorhome's Moto-Trek X-Cite G review to find out if it is

Moto-Trek has produced a game-changer of a ’van with its X-Cite G. The slide-out is well-executed and production models will have a greater payload. It’s also British-made and well-built.

An impressive design in a ‘van with an MTPLM of 3500kg It’s well-built with lots of storage

Moto-Trek ’s established Euro-Treka models are still described as ‘revolutionary’. This apparent contradiction is explained by their main selling point – they remain one of only two British manufacturers to volume build coachbuilts equipped with slide-outs.

The latest model, X-Cite G , is destined to enjoy wide appeal because it offers a comprehensively equipped motorhome with a garage, in addition to the slide-out, and yet can be driven by anybody with a licence to drive a passenger car. Want to find out more? Read our review!

It's a comprehensively equipped motorhome with a garage and a slide-out, that can be driven by anybody with a licence to drive a passenger car

As soon as the lounge slide-out had been deployed, campsite neighbours appeared en masse for a look. All were impressed by the feeling of spaciousness the slide-out created.

Its freestanding table can be moved around to suit the preferences of those on board – a welcome feature that gives the Moto-Trek quite an advantage over rivals. Most photographs show the table parallel to the settee, which requires diners to eat side-by-side. We prefer to dine facing each other, so we would move it forwards and one of us would sit on a swivelled cab seat.

Directly opposite the settee is the galley which offers everything most cooks would wish for – and in an incredibly compact package. There are a couple of deep storage drawers and a decent amount of worktop space, thanks to a fold-down extension. It was reassuring to see a fire blanket correctly placed near the cooker – and not directly above it.

Our pet hate in motorcaravan kitchens is a lack of effective task lighting in the evening; there were no such worries here.

A washroom amidships features wipe-clean walls, plus all the usual fixtures and fittings. Unfortunately, its windows were transparent; we’d much prefer the privacy that opaque glazing offers.

Still, the room gets full marks for the generous storage and ‘proper’ vanity basin. The wooden duckboard should protect the shower tray and – as with so much in the Moto-Trek – we wondered why other manufacturers hadn’t followed suit.

The permanent high-level transverse bed is above the garage. Access and egress are reasonably easy, though the narrow rungs on the aluminium ladder can be unkind to bare feet. A wide opening window plus the panoramic skylight should stop anyone from feeling claustrophobic.

The ’van we tested was a preproduction prototype, with just one bed. The 2016 brochure indicates that the seat bench in production models will be convertible into a low-level island double. This will be perfect for accommodating guests arriving under their own steam or even for couples wanting a double bed each!

Although the main storage area is that fantastic, twin-door garage, careful thought has also been given to the interior options. High-level lockers have a fiddle-rail to stop stuff from tumbling out the first time they are opened after a twisty journey. Positive-locking catches and wipe-clean contrasting finger panels all redounded to its credit.

There is a downside to the Moto-Trek X-Cite G being fully loaded and having such sturdy furniture: the weight. With two people aboard this example, the actual available payload is nearer 150kg than the quoted figure of 250kg. (We’ve estimated an additional 25kg for the De-Luxe Pack and 75kg for the passenger.)

The good news is that Moto-Trek has recently achieved some weight saving, while a free weight upgrade to 3850kg is available. Of course, this would compromise the original aim of having a slide-out and a garage on a sub-3500kg motorhome. The payload quoted for 2016 models weighing 3500kg is a more practical 300kg. This can be increased by an additional 90kg by travelling with only 10 litres of fresh water on board.

Moto-Trek X-Cite G Elite: Success with a slide-out

Published in Motorhome Reviews on 17/12/2015   - 5 Comments

An emergent British manufacturer, Moto-Trek only broke cover with its motorhomes some three years ago, but it has a long history of bespoke building of horseboxes, trailers and motorsport vehicles.

Moto-Trek X-Cite G FNS slide out open LB

It currently operates from an impressive complex of factories in Holmfirth, Yorkshire, but plans are already in place for a motorhome dealer network too.

Moto-Trek X-Cite G Front 2 LB

Meanwhile, selling mainly direct, it’s steadily grown its portfolio, which already covers a series of high-top van conversions, standard low-profile coachbuilts and – arguably the stars – two coachbuilts with slide-out sections under the X-Cite name. Here, we have the G (for garage) variant, with Elite specification. All models have full European Type Approval, too.

Already a big converter of Peugeot Boxer base vehicles, it’s the cab with Al-KO extension that provides the base here. If you want automatic transmission, it involves switching over to a Fiat Ducato.

Moto Trek XCite G Lounge

Inside, there’s a choice of standard or gloss-finish furniture, but there’s a bit of mix and match available as Moto-Trek happily admits it’s still at the “bespoke” stage as far as catering for customers’ demands are concerned.

That furniture, however, is built local to Moto-Trek’s Yorkshire base and is exclusive to the company.

Moto Trek XCite G Cab Seating

The X-Cite G floorplan sees a transverse double bed across the back. Such a configuration is very popular on mainland Europe, but its space-saving qualities – it also allows for the large garage storage area below – haven’t been quite so appreciated here in the UK. One challenge, for some folk, is accessing that bed. Once up here, you benefit from the extra support of Froli-type springs under the mattress, plus a padded headboard on the nearside.

Moto Trek XCite G Bed

Another option is the facility to make a double bed in the slide-out zone.

That lounge area is, of course, made all the roomier when you’re parked up on site and can really benefit from the slide-out. Both cab seats also swivel, so there’s plenty of seating as well as floor space.

Moto Trek XCite G Kitchen

The kitchen occupies the nearside directly opposite the lounge settee. A Daewoo microwave is among many upmarket stand fittings, complementing a Dometic cooker with three gas rings and a conventional grill/oven combination, with space for two handy drawers beneath.

A part-circular sink sits far enough away from the hob to insert a drainer, as needed. If you want more worktop, there’s an extension to the left of the cooker.

Again, Moto-Trek says it’s happy at the moment to “customise” the available storage space, depending on any preference you may have for shelving, or drawers rather than cupboards.

Moto Trek XCite G Washroom

On the offside, the washroom includes a step-in shower area with wooden duckboarding and curtaining to three sides, a Dometic ceramic-bowl toilet and a fixed basin set over a cupboard.

Moto-Trek Excite-G Garage

There’s definitely a sturdy feel to all of the construction here. Those lockers have proper hinges and catches. There’s also a flat floor through from the cab to the rear bedroom. A wind-up sunroof over the cab helps light and ventilation to the lounge area, with LED spotlights also to hand at night time.

Despite the extra engineering work that goes into a slide-out and its mechanism, Moto-Trek have kept the maximum weight down to the all-important 3,500kg maximum, also endowing the X-Cite G Elite with a decent 481kg starting payload. The chassis can be upgraded to 3,850kg, but that’s an extra £480.

If that Elite starting price of £55,999 is too much, do note there’s the down-specc’d Classic, starting from £49,999. Also featuring in the example here is the Deluxe Pack Plus option. It includes a reversing camera, 16in TV/DVD player, colour-matched awning, 80Watt solar panel and tracking system – coming in at a £2,880 package that works out a whole lot cheaper than if each item were ordered individually.

As for rivals, well Moto-Trek pretty much has the British-made slide-out field to itself at the moment, unless you’re considering much larger and heavier vehicles costing tens of thousands of pounds more.

Verdict : Interesting and well-executed, from a company that’s one to watch in 2016

Plus : Space-creating slide-out, solid build qualities

Minus : Getting pricey in Elite format

In-a-nutshell : A British-built slide-out exclusive

I don’t know why the media is backing this company with so many articles about their products. I understand they have massive problems in delivering any van on time or meet specification. Has anyone seen any of them out and about as I have worked on caravan club sites for a long time and never seen one. I think the design and planning looks good, their marketing and attendance at shows would lead you to believe they are turning vans out regularly so why are they so rare? Other small manufactures seem to get their products out and in use fairly quickly and customers can then gain knowledge about them.

We like to review a range of different manufacturers and models on our blog for our readers. We contacted Moto-Trek with your comments and here’s their response: “When we launched our product range the number of initial orders taken exceeded our expectations and production capacity. When our customers had experienced delays we had offered alternative arrangements. We have now overcome the backlog and have increased our production facilities. We are delighted with the excellent response we have received to our products from motorhome customers and we are confident we can meet all future demands.”

Broker's Comments. Welcome to the sale of this excellent Moto-Trek X-Cite EB based on a 2.2 Peugeot diesel with a 6 speed manual gearbox. This superb motorhome really has to be seen to be believed. It comes on the 3500kg chassis meaning it can be driven on a standard UK license, with full service history and just 1 owner from new.

  2. Moto-Trek X-Cite EB

The end-washroom in this Moto-Trek X-Cite EB initially seems a squeeze. The central washbasin and vanity unit is small, and there isn't much room around it - although it is well lit by a rooflight. The shower, with its own rooflight, is a different matter. It's of average size, but because you step down into it there is lots of headroom.

There is a downside to the Moto-Trek X-Cite G being fully loaded and having such sturdy furniture: the weight. (We've estimated an additional 25kg for the De-Luxe Pack and 75kg for the passenger.)
