Regional Championship Qualifiers

Regional Championship Qualifiers are largely held at the WPN store level and are organized by regional tournament organizers. These teams set local qualification guidelines, work with the WPN to schedule qualifiers, and provide program information on their websites. In other words, rather than previous one-plan-fits-all approaches to qualifiers, we're giving some flexibility to regional organizers who know their players and how best to hold events in their regions. To start your journey, visit one of these organizers' websites:

  • USA – Dreamhack
  • Canada – Face to Face Games
  • Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) – Legacy
  • Australia/New Zealand – Good Games
  • China – Kadou
  • Japan/Korea – Big Magic
  • Southeast Asia – Oracle Events
  • Chinese Taipei – Game Square
  • Brazil – City Class Games
  • Mexico/Central America/Caribbean – Yellow Rabbit
  • South America – Magicsur

Bookmark those pages. They will be your hubs of information for qualifying and finals events in each of those regions.

As a quick interlude, we will be distributing promos at the local and regional levels while supplies last. The exact breakdown differs from region-to-region. Check with your participating organizers for more info.

Regional Championship Qualifier Promo Card(s)*:

  • Lava Spike: Non-foil for participating in local qualifiers. Traditional foil for participating in select large, open qualifying events and side events at Regional Finals.
  • Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx: Non-foil for top finishers at local qualifying events. Traditional foil for players who earn invitations to the Regional Championship.

Regional Championships

Have you already conquered your local scene? Set your sights on some pretty choice bragging rights with the Regional Championships. Imagine getting to call yourself the European or South American Champion. Imagine representing your region at the Pro Tour and doing so knowing they're back home cheering you on. Imagine winning your championship and collecting an invite directly to the World Championship.

That's right—win your Regional Championship (or finish second in the USA, EMEA, or Japanese Championship)—and you'll earn a qualification straight to the World Championship on top of your Pro Tour invite. The Regional Championships are big, big events, and we wanted accolades that matched the achievement of winning.

Each Regional Championship is a major Magic event—a focal point for play in your region. Besides the Championship itself, which will award invitations to Pro Tours in addition to the prize pool, these events will have a variety of play options for fans. Regional Championships are run by the same groups who organize the local qualifiers, so bookmark those websites above and get ready to challenge the best in your region. Note that you can only participate in one region's Regional Championship for each round of Championships.

Regional Championship Promo Card:

  • Teferi, Hero of Dominaria: Non-foil for Regional Championship participants, and traditional foil for top finishers.

mtg pro tour dates

The Pro Tour is back! Three times a year, qualifiers from the Regional Championships will gather to compete for their share of $500,000 in prizes, invites to the World Championship, and the right to claim their place among the best in the world. Perform well at a Regional Championship and earn your spot among the best in the world.

mtg pro tour dates

Pro Tours will be hosted by Wizards of the Coast at locations we'll announce as we get closer to the dates. While the uncertainty surrounding COVID does make our crystal ball a bit hazy, we're currently targeting our first Pro Tour for early 2023. Our priority is always for the safety of our players and staff, and we'll be adjusting plans in accordance with the latest health and safety guidelines. Our goal is to gather again to celebrate the best of the best on the Pro Tour, and we'll be sharing more information as plans solidify.

Most Pro Tour qualifications will be earned by performing well at Regional Championships or from finishing with 10 wins in a previous Pro Tour, but we're also introducing a points system called Adjusted Match Points (AMP) that will allow players to earn invites through multiple strong, but not otherwise qualifying, performances at Pro Tour tournaments. For more on how AMP works, you can read the details here .

All invite policies for the first year of this program will be more generous as we populate the tournament system. For more information, check out that details article .

World Championship

The culmination of everything a competitive Magic player may dream of, the World Championship will serve as the capstone event of each season. Around 128 players will compete for their share of $1,000,000. For the 2022–2023 season, this event will be held later in 2023 in the United States. The one and only winner will be crowned Magic: The Gathering World Champion.

mtg pro tour dates

Our goal is for the World Championship, the Pro Tours, the Regional Championships, and local qualifiers to be held in person and played on tabletop, though local restrictions, the fluctuating state of international travel, and the health and safety of players and staff may alter plans. We'll endeavor to share any changes or updates at the earliest date possible.

Digital Path

But wait, there's more! Even as we've leaned into digital Premier Play these past two years, there's more coming! The new digital paths through Magic: The Gathering Arena and Magic Online will both feed into the tabletop path and offer its own journey culminating in the World Championships. As the digital path plugs directly into the tabletop path, there are still a few virtual i's to dot and t's to cross. We'll unveil the full detailed digital path toward the end of April. While we're still finalizing the details, we do know the following will be true.

  • Events on both platforms will feed tabletop events at nearly every level, including the World Championship.
  • Magic: The Gathering Arena Qualifier Weekends will continue, with some exciting twists.
  • Magic: The Gathering Online Showcase events will continue and will feed the World Championship directly!
  • MTG Arena will include new ways to qualify for Qualifier Weekends besides ladder play.
  • The updated MTG Arena qualification path will start with April ladder play and May qualification events! There will be some differences between how that first month plugs into the tabletop path and later months, but we'll cover those details separately.
  • The digital path will have different eligibility requirements that we'll outline in April.

For more information, check out the MTG Arena April Ranked Season details .

Otherwise, check back next month for your digital path to the Pro Tour!

The first Regional Championship Qualifiers will begin July 2 and can be run as Standard, Pioneer, Modern, or Limited. The first round of Regional Championships will be Pioneer, and the first Pro Tour will feature Pioneer and Limited! Start practicing and prepping your deck now!

We also know it's likely you have questions, and we're here to answer them. There are a few ways to get your questions answered.

  • Read the full details about these programs to learn more.
  • We've also prepared a FAQ for anticipated questions .
  • Today (March 31) at 2:30 p.m. PT, Director of Play Programs William Jensen will be on Weekly MTG—live at twitch.tv/magic —to take your questions about all of the above.
  • Following the stream today, the Play team staff will be available on the official Magic: The Gathering Discord channel taking more questions.
  • Finally, we'll be manning the @PlayMTG (formerly @MagicEsports ) Twitter account answering as many questions as we can.

MTG Pro Tour 2023: Full List of Dates, Cities

By conner dejecacion | feb 16, 2023.

mtg pro tour dates

The MTG Pro Tour is a series of top-level competitions for Magic: The Gathering . It pits the best of the best against one another for huge cash prizes, as well as fame and glory in the trading card game community. Here are the details.

To enter the Pro Tour, players must first qualify via a Local Qualifier and a Regional Qualifier. These two events come together in the Pro Tour, where players from different regions play against one another in one massive event. The year is then capped off by the World Championship, which has a massive cash prize and the opportunity for the winner to be memorialized in an upcoming Magic card.

TOMORROW! #MCPhilly and #PTPhyrexia from the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia, PA! Coverage of the Pro Tour starts 11am ET tomorrow on https://t.co/nUzYF5lMQ3 https://t.co/Bq6Nlk6oaJ for badges and more information pic.twitter.com/Q1UbTdZvhv — Magic: The Gathering (@wizards_magic) February 16, 2023

Here's how the 2022-2023 Pro Tour season will shake out according to the Magic Wiki:

In between each event is a Regional Championship that will allow players to qualify for the Pro Tour, in addition to finalists from previous Pro Tours. Lastly, the Magic World Championship will be held Sept. 22-24, 2023 at MagicCon Las Vegas, USA, marking the grand finale of the 2022-2023 Pro Tour season.

If you're looking to go competitive, it might be a good idea to practice at in-store events or online. Also be sure to follow the latest decks and competitive strategies so you can plan to come out on top.

Magic: The Gathering just returned Pro Tour from the graveyard

The Pioneer format will be highlighted at the first regional championship round.

Hardcore cardboard slingers received some good news today after Wizards of the Coast announced that it would return to the Pro Tour format for trading card game Magic: The Gathering’s 2022-2023 competitive season.

The Pro Tour was unceremoniously cancelled in 2018 after 22 years as the standard path for Magic’s elite players to travel on their way to the world championship. Its return comes with expected caveats and more than a few uncertainties, and the community will likely remain a little shy of Wizards’ continued support for this new version.

If the only place you tap lands is around the kitchen table, it could feel a little daunting to consider competitive Magic in the first place. Here’s the gist: the Magic Pro Tour will be the structure of the upcoming competitive Magic: The Gathering season, which begins July 2nd. The previous convoluted qualifying structure has been simplified with in-person events at local stores, regional championship events, and three Pro Tour dates per season. How the COVID-19 pandemic will impact this structure is an open question, even to Wizards of the Coast.

Cover image for YouTube video

Magic: The Gathering trashcanned the former Pro Tour model in 2018 to refocus its competitive scene on the then-new digital client, Magic Arena . Advertising for the Magic Pro League and related Rivals League centred on a supposed democratisation of competitive play by moving much of the events online and opening several new paths for qualification. The result was confusing for both pro players and spectators , and the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic mere years into its life was the final nail in a quickly assembled coffin.

Players interested in taking part in the new system will attend events at local games stores that are part of the Wizards Play Network. High performance at organised play, which can be structured around Standard, Limited, Modern or Pioneer formats - will earn them spots in regional championships where individuals will compete to earn spots at one of three Pro Tours scheduled for each competitive season. Wizards of the Coast did not provide much information on the number of players and prize pool for these first two levels, as they will be handled by third-party organisers.

Each Pro Tour will feature around 300 players vying for pieces of a $500,000 prize pool, and all three should be highly advertised opportunities for spectating. This was one of the biggest community complaints about the MPL and Rivals - folks were never sure when matches took place and how important they were. If competitive Magic: The Gathering wants to tout its ability as an esport, the Pro Tours should be where it happens.

Magic Arena players will still be able to take part in digital qualifiers, and other systems for clinching a Pro Tour invite were outlined in a recently published FAQ. All told, it’s a much simpler system that seems to emphasise paper Magic, including the first event focusing on the Pioneer format . Introduced in 2019, months before COVID-19 became a global concern, Pioneer has garnered ardent support from the playerbase who warmly welcomed its addition to competitive play on social media.

Speaking of the coronavirus, Wizards of the Coast had little to say about how the ongoing pandemic will affect the upcoming competitive season. The company did not outline its own mask or vaccination requirements for World Championship XXIX and said regional events will “comply with local laws and regulations”. For countries whose government is already beginning to act as though COVID-19 is a solved issue, this decision is an unsettling one. Dicebreaker has reached out to Wizards of the Coast for more information but did not immediately hear back.

More information on how Magic Arena and MTG Online will fit into the newly returned Pro Tour model is expected by the end of April. A detailed breakdown of paths to qualification and the FAQ can be found on Wizards of the Coast’s esports website.

Wizards of the Coast announced an update to the Magic: The Gathering Premier Play System kicking off on 2 July 2022, featuring four levels of tabletop play which culminates in a World Championship tournament with a US $1 million prize pool. Pro Tour Returns! Re-Ignite Your Store's Competitive Play

Prepare to host qualifier events at your store and get a rundown of the upcoming competitive season.

Get ready—the return of competitive play is here! Regardless of your players' experience level within the community, you can encourage them all to get involved with a local qualifier at your local store, kick-starting their journey toward the Magic: The Gathering World Championship.

Depending on your region, WPN Premium stores may have access to perks, such as additional Regional Championship invitations or larger promo allocations. Please check with your regional organizer for specific information.

Today we'll be discussing the four levels of tabletop play: local qualifiers, Regional Championships, Pro Tours, and finally, the Magic: The Gathering World Championship.

Regional Championship Qualifiers

Regional tournament organizers will be working with you directly to schedule Regional Championship Qualifier events at your store through Wizards EventLink . This offers more flexibility in planning the events, for regional organizers and players.

Your Regional Tournament Organizer will sell and distribute your qualifier kit, set your event date and be your first point of contact.

Encourage your players to bookmark these organizers’ websites, too—they'll serve as information hubs for qualifying and finals events in each region:

  • USA - Dreamhack
  • Canada - Face to Face
  • Europe - Legacy
  • Australia/New Zealand - Good Games
  • China - Beijing Kadou Culture
  • Japan/Korea - Big Magic
  • Southeast Asia - Oracle Events
  • Taiwan - GameSquare
  • Brazil - City Class Games
  • Mexico/Central America/Caribbean - Yellow Rabbit
  • South America - Magicsur

If you haven't run a large-scale tournament yourself, or it's been a long time and you'd like additional support, you may look to Judge Academy to assist you in connecting with an official Magic: The Gathering judge to help with your event.

By signing up for these events through your regional organizer, you'll receive Promos to celebrate at the local and regional level while supplies last!

The Regional Championship Qualifier Promos, as well as their usage, are as follows:

  • Lava Spike: Nonfoil for participating in local qualifiers. Foil for participating in larger local qualifiers and side events at Regional Finals.
  • Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx: Nonfoil for top finishers at local qualifying events. Foil for the winners of local qualifiers.*

*Please note that kits for multi-slot qualifiers will have a foil Nykthos for each invitation slot, not purely for the winner.

Again, all Promos are available in limited quantities while supplies last. With any questions regarding the exact breakdown of promo prize support, contact your regional organizer.

Regional Championships

Regional Championship details will differ based on each individual region, though the first Regional Championship will be held in late 2022. The number of invites to the Pro Tour awarded, prizes, and any additional information will be communicated for each region by the regional organizer noted above.

Players from the following categories will receive invites to the Regional Championships:

  • Regional Championship Qualifier Winners
  • Players qualified for the next Pro Tour
  • MTGO Qualifiers
  • MTG Arena Qualifiers

In addition, members of the MPL/Rivals from 2021–22 and the Top 16 (not already invited) Challengers from 2022 Worlds Standings will be invited to the first three Regional Championships.

The Promo for Regional Championship is as follows:

  • Teferi, Hero of Dominaria: Nonfoil for participants and foil for top finishers.

Three times a year, top finishers from the Regional Championships will compete for their share of $500,000 in prizes, an invite to the World Championship, and bragging rights as they claim their place as the best in their region.

Pro Tours will be held in the United States in 2023. While we are mindful of the fluctuating state of international travel, we are hoping to expand outside of the U.S. as soon as we can. The location of each Pro Tour will be announced closer to each event's date.

Magic: The Gathering World Championship

This event will be held later in 2023, in the United States, where approximately 128 players will play for the featured prize pool of $1 million. The exact breakdown by place will be published closer to the event.

While the state of international travel is always in flux, we hope that the World Championships will be held in person.

We've prepared an FAQ to answer some of the questions you may have , and we will share more information about these events as it becomes relevant. You may also reference more details on the Magic website to help answer any questions your players have.

The first local qualifiers will begin July 2 and will be run using Pioneer, Modern, Sealed Deck, or Standard formats. Schedule practice events early to give your players ample time and space to prepare their decks and practice ahead of time.

Plus, the competition has been made more accessible than ever, as players can qualify through digital play using Magic: The Gathering Arena or Magic: The Gathering Online . Please remember that for tabletop events, players must be 13 years or older with parental permission, or 18 years or older without. For digital events, all players must be 18 years or older (no exceptions).

The return of competitive play is bound to be an exciting time for your community—make sure you start planning and contact your Regional Organizer noted above to join.

Everything We Know (So Far) About MTG's Modern Horizons 3

Modern rotation is coming.

By Emma Partlow | @emmadpartlow | Published 5/7/2024 | 7 min read

Modern Horizons 3  is slated to be the biggest Magic: The Gathering release of the year, where it looks to build on the success of the first two Modern Horizons expansions with a mixture of desirable reprints and new cards. While there are valid concerns about how Modern Horizons can essentially force rotation in the Modern format, it's branching out this time by adding a Commander subset, along with MTG Arena applications.

Admittedly, it feels a little strange to see a Commander release support something that's so focus on Constructed, but let's break down everything we (officially) know so far about Modern Horizons 3.

Modern Horizons 3 Key Dates, Previews, and Event Schedule

With hype amassing for Modern Horizons 3, here are the key dates you'll need to know leading up to the release and beyond.

  • Debut and Previews Begin on WeeklyMTG: May 21
  • Card Image Gallery and Previews Complete: May 31
  • Global Tabletop Launch: June 14
  • Prerelease Events Begin From: June 7
  • MTG Arena Global Launch: June 11
  • Magic Online Global Launch: June 11
  • Open House Weekend: June 14
  • Pro Tour Modern Horizons 3 at MagicCon: Amsterdam: June 28–30
  • Modern Horizons 3 Set Code: MH3
  • Commander: Modern Horizons 3 Set Code: M3C
  • Special Guests Set Code: SPG

Modern Horizons 3's global release is on June 14, with Magic Online (MTGO) and MTG Arena releases falling a few days before (June 11). It's worth mentioning this is the first Modern Horizons will come to MTG Arena, making the cards legal in Timeless and Historic upon release. Similar to Modern Horizons releases before it, these cards won't be Standard or Pioneer legal but will be Modern, Legacy, Vintage, Pauper, and Commander viable upon release.

Previews for the highly-anticipated expansion begin on May 21 over on Wizards' WeeklyMTG Stream , where the previews will carry through until May 31. You can keep up with the previews at Wizards' Card Image Gallery, which will be updated as the cards trickle through.

Modern Horizons 3 Previews and Mechanics

mtg pro tour dates

As Modern Horizons doesn't fit a particular worldbuilding theme, there is a selection of returning mechanics to excite casual and competitive players. Oftentimes, you see riffs on classic cards such as Cabal Therapist from Modern Horizons, which takes inspiration from the powerful Cabal Therapy .

Wizards revealed a smattering of cards earlier this month leading up to the previews on May 21, some of which look to make a notable impact in Modern and beyond.

mtg pro tour dates

The Eldrazi return in a meaningful way in Modern Horizons 3 with Emrakul, the World Anew , with the Eldrazi Titan incorporating Madness. Devoid also returns in Modern Horizon 3, which is a characteristic-defining keyword ability that states that a card is colorless, regardless of the colors in that card's mana cost. You can expect Devoid to play a notable role in the Eldrazi Incursion Commander Precon upon Modern Horizon 3's release.

mtg pro tour dates

Going one further, Energy returns in Modern Horizons 3 thanks to the Creative Energy Commander Precon, a mechanic that recently appeared in Universes Beyond: Fallout to notable popularity. In addition, Chthonian Nightmare is a riff on the iconic Recurring Nightmare , using Energy as part of the costs. You can expect many of the cards from the base Modern Horizons 3 set to have an Energy theme.

mtg pro tour dates

Another returning mechanic is the flip Planeswalkers first appearing in Magic Origins, as seen with Ajani, Nacatl Pariah , where if you meet a certain criteria, you may flip the card into its Planeswalker form. You can expect to see a bunch of much-loved characters appear in their pre-spark form when previews begin on May 21. It's also been confirmed that Tamiyo will be one of these flip Planeswalkers, telling the story of how her spark became ignited before her fall in the recent Phyrexia storyline.

While these aren't mechanics-related, Modern Horizons typically offers plenty of reprints that see Modern legality for the first time. Priest of Titania , Kappa Cannoneer , and Laelia, the Blade Reforged are some of the cards that will feature in Modern Horizons 3 upon release.

mtg pro tour dates

An exciting part of Modern Horizons 2 was the reprint of the Enemy Fetches in Misty Rainforest , Scalding Tarn , Arid Mesa , Marsh Flats , and Verdant Catacombs , as this gave players an amazing opportunity to pick up these Modern staples at an affordable price. The same is true in Modern Horizons 3, where the Allied Fetches will return in the expansion. While these are already Modern legal, it's another way to make Modern staples more accessible for players to collect.

mtg pro tour dates

Flooded Strand , Bloodstained Mire , Polluted Delta , Wooded Foothills , and Windswept Heath will feature in Modern Horizons 3 with traditional, Retro, and Borderless printings to collect upon release. If the prices of the Modern Horizons 2 Fetches are anything to go by, these Allied Fetches will come down in price over time, which is ideal for players.

Modern Horizons 3 Commander Precons

As mentioned briefly earlier, Modern Horizons 3 will see four Commander Precons to support this exciting release. Furthermore, there will be Collector Edition variants available, with each card coming in an all-brand new Ripple Foil treatment (this is yet to be revealed by Wizards). There will also be two Borderless Profile cards in each Commander Precon, which we'll assume are the face and backup Commander for each of these.

The Special Guests in Modern Horizons 3

While we don't know the complete list of Special Guests as of yet, it has been confirmed by Wizards that Solitude will appear as one of these. Based on this information alone, you can expect Endurance, Fury, Grief, and Subtlety to feature as part of this unique subset. In Collector Boosters, you run a chance of opening a Textured Foil Special Guests card, which is bound to command an impressive amount of value.

The Card Treatments in Modern Horizons 3

mtg pro tour dates

Modern Horizons 3 keeps to a similar theme of incorporating Extended Arts, Etched Foils, and Retro Frame cards as seen with most high-profile Magic releases. Furthermore, there will be Borderless treatments of the set's most powerful Rares and Mythics, such as 548636 and 548619, which will be a popular purchase with Constructed and Commander players upon release.

mtg pro tour dates

Also, the Borderless Profile treatment returns in Modern Horizons 3. Debuting in Commander Masters, this design quickly became popular with Commander players where you can expect the striking treatment to appear on various legends within the set.

mtg pro tour dates

As for the Basic Lands? Wizards of the Coast have outdone themselves this time with these stunning Full Art Lands depicting the Ulamog, Emrakul, and Kozilek razing the landscape all in their Eldrazi glory. Furthermore, Snow-Covered Wastes sees a printing for the first time in Modern Horizons 3, which will be of interest to Commander players who love throwing spaghetti at their opponents.
