nile cruises egypt

Many thanks for great information!

nile cruises egypt

Based on the review here, we booked on the Sonesta Moon Goddess March, 2023. We were disappointed. The rooms were indeed classic and comfortable. The carpets in the hall were old and stained. The HVAC systems in the room did not work properly despite engineering’s best efforts. Hot water was often hard to come by. The most disappointing element was the food. This was served buffet style, and almost never maintained hot. It was as if I had returned to my high school cafeteria. The staff were attentive and tried to please.

The review above does not reflect on the current state of affairs.

19 of the best Nile cruises for 2024

Discover egypt’s past on a voyage along the world’s longest river with one of these unforgettable nile cruises.

Traditional felucca boats on the Nile at Luxor

S ailing the River Nile is a bucket-list experience. Since the first tourists travelled down the river in 1869, it has attracted visitors enthralled by Egypt’s pharaohs, prophets and pyramids. The world’s longest river flows through 11 African countries for 4,100 miles before spilling out into the Mediterranean, but it’s the Upper Nile, which snakes through southern Egypt, that offers the most cruise itineraries. These visit some of the country’s famous ruins and archaeological discoveries, including the Valley of the Kings, Luxor, Aswan and the Temple of Horus. Cruises operate year-round but sailings between October and May will avoid scorching summer temperatures. Whether you choose to sail on a modern cruise ship, a restored paddle steamer or even a traditional two-masted dahabiya, these are some of the best Nile cruises and itineraries for this journey of a lifetime.

1. G Adventures: Pyramids, Temples & the Nile

A traditional dahabiya cruises the Nile at sunset

Best for a dahabiya experience Leave the crowded ports to the oversized ships and opt for a more serene sailing with G Adventures. Its ten-day Egypt: Pyramids, Temples & the Nile itinerary includes four nights in Cairo and five on board a traditional dahabiya, which has no engine so you can sit back and listen to the sounds of the waves. With just ten cabins, it can dock at small sites close to villages for a more authentic experience. These include a visit to a nonprofit charity working with young people in the West Bank, a barbeque on a remote island in the middle of the Nile and a trip to Nubian village for mint tea with a local family.

2. ms farah: taste of egypt.

Best for on-board experience The real attraction of a Nile cruise lies on dry land, but guests on an Avalon Waterways cruise will be in no hurry to disembark. This ship has 56 deluxe cabins and two suites, and all have oversized balconies to watch the world sail by. Treats on board include free use of a sauna and steam room, complimentary wi-fi, barbecue lunches and dinners on the sun deck, a library and welcome amenities including a fruit basket and canapés. Guests can join an Egyptian cooking class, use a telescope to stargaze or attend a lecture by an Egyptologist. Ten-day Taste of Egypt itineraries feature five nights in Cairo, including lunches in local restaurants, trips to the Great Pyramids of Giza and the Aswan High Dam, and an optional dinner cruise with live music and belly dancing.

The 12-day tour includes seven nights on the MS Nile Plaza with its restaurant, bar and sundeck, two and a half days of free time and even a VIP transfer from your home for your flight to Cairo. A cabin on MS Darakum

Best for watching the world go by Those who like to take the long route and stay on a boat for the duration of their Egyptian adventure in Egypt will enjoy a cruise on the 52-cabin MS Darakum. Thanks to its very low draft, it is one of the few vessels that can sail from Cairo to Luxor. After an intoxicating few days in the capital, exploring its markets, mosques and ancient wonders, it’s time to travel south. The beauty of covering a much longer distance than a traditional Nile cruise is the extra time it allows to simply sit and watch the world go by. Riviera Travel’s Wonders of the Nile: Cairo to Luxor itinerary is sprinkled with long and leisurely sailing days where there’s little to do except relax on the sun deck and gaze out at the small farms and date plantations, before retreating inside to attend the fascinating onboard lectures.

As well as all the usual big hitters, there are plenty of offbeat options that make this an eye-opening choice for the curious traveller. 10. SS Sudan: On the River Nile

SS Sudan

Best for Agatha Christie lovers One of the most historic and atmospheric vessels to ply the Nile’s waters, this celebrated 19th-century steamer once welcomed Agatha Christie aboard. It is widely believed that it was that trip in 1933, accompanying her husband on an archaeological mission, which paved the way for one of her most accomplished murder mysteries. Following Kenneth Branagh’s 2022 adaptation of Death on the Nile , the SS Sudan is the perfect ship for fans of the Queen of Crime; there are cabins named after Christie and her character Hercule Poirot. The boat exudes opulent period charm, from the teak decks and parquet flooring to the brass bed frames in many of the rooms. Guests also have exclusive access to a network of expert archaeologists who will help bring the historical ruins to life.

11. SS Misr: Timeless Nile

SS Misr

Best for traditionalists Misr, which means “Egypt” in Arabic, is a propeller steamer that has long enjoyed a romance with this country. Built in Preston in 1918 by the Royal Navy, in 1938 it was converted into a luxury yacht that played host to King Farouk, the country’s penultimate monarch. The vessel has now been fully restored to its former glory, and its 12 and 14-night trips are known for celebrating local food — there’s a rather regal feeling inside the main Marasem restaurant, with framed photos of past royalty dotted about and waiters smartly dressed in attire inspired by the glory days of Farouk. The food is largely international but local flavours are celebrated in dishes such as bessara, a local dip made from fava beans.

12. MS Esplanade: Nile cruises

MS Esplanade

13. La Flaneuse du Nil: traditional-style sailing

La Flaneuse du Nil

Best for return visitors For those who have already sailed the Nile and may be looking for something different, La Flaneuse du Nil is a tempting option. While most boats travel north from Aswan towards Luxor, this intimate five-day cruise heads south into Lake Nasser bound for the rock-cut temples of Abu Simbel. Powered by sails and tugs, just like the original dahabiyas that were once a regular sight on the waterway, this cosy vessel showcases the subtle beauty of the vast man-made reservoir that straddles Egypt’s border with Sudan. The boat sails at a leisurely pace, with stops for lake swims, sunset hikes and solitary mornings on quiet beaches, as well as guided trips to some of the most impressive ancient wonders Egypt has to explore.

14. Sanctuary Sun Boat III: luxury cruise

Sanctuary Sun Boat III

Best for fun on the river An extremely attractive boat, and one of the few vessels to (occasionally) cruise from Cairo to Aswan, the Sanctuary Sun Boat III takes its inspiration from the glamour of the 1920s and 1930s. Think ecru tones, four-poster beds draped in the finest Egyptian linen and entertainment in the form of belly dancers and whirling dervishes. Here’s what it’s like to take a Nile cruise in 2022

Plan your trip of a lifetime in Egypt with this guide to cruising on the Nile © Lauren Keith / Lonely Planet

Egypt is nothing short of a miracle. Though the forbidding Sahara encroaches from every direction, the Nile River splashes a verdant green ribbon through the country, sometimes managing to push the desert sands only a few hundred feet back from the riverbank.

One of the world’s longest and most legendary rivers, the Nile travels more than 6500km (4100 miles) through five countries, but it’s most closely connected with Egypt. And indeed, so much of Egyptian history has unfolded along the Nile that nearly all of the country’s major cities and ancient tombs and temples are located along this lush life-giving artery.

The ancient Egyptians used the river as a highway, dispatching trade and military expeditions and toting statues of their gods between temples. The 5th century BCE Greek historian Herodotus famously called Egypt the “gift of the Nile,” and even now, millennia later, cruising the Nile is still the best way for travelers to see Egypt’s gifts for themselves.

Ready to embark on the trip of a lifetime? Here’s what you need to know about picking the best Nile river cruises.

Colourful hot-air balloons fill the sky over a landscape of desert to the right and greenery to the left

Why are so many travelers talking about Egypt in 2022?

Nowhere else in the world is the past so intertwined with the present than in Egypt, and 2022 promises to be a blockbuster time to experience them both.

Lonely Planet named Egypt one of the top 10 countries to visit this year , and the long-anticipated Grand Egyptian Museum is expected to open in November to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamun , the famous golden pharaoh and “boy king.”

September marked 200 years since the Rosetta Stone was translated, which revealed the meanings of the hieroglyphs and recaptured knowledge that had been lost for centuries. New archaeological discoveries continue apace in Luxor, Saqqara and elsewhere that keep rewriting history.

Tourism hit a record high in Egypt in 2019 and was expected to grow even more in 2020, but we all know what happened then. Like many places, tourism in Egypt has now entered recovery mode, making the coming months a great – and still relatively quiet – time to visit.

Some Nile cruise companies continued construction projects that have seen new boats launched on the river, including the August 2022 debut of the Viking Osiris , a brand new 82-passenger vessel built specifically to navigate the Nile.

Why you should take a Nile cruise when you visit Egypt

While cruises might get a bad rap elsewhere in the world, traveling by boat on the Nile is a time-honored tradition that stretches back to the pharaonic era.

Along the riverbanks, life carries on in the way that it has since time immemorial: mudbrick houses poke out from behind the foliage, children wave excitedly at passing ships, a lone man paddles a blue-painted canoe piled high with alfalfa for his hungry livestock, palm trees heavy with golden dates sag as they await the harvest.

In a fast-paced world, opportunities to simply sit back and watch life glide by are few and far between. Sitting outside on the Osiris ’s balcony traveling at the speed of the river, I felt like I was watching a slow travel TV show – at once both an outside spectator and also completely immersed in it.

In ancient times, mastering the river helped rulers unite the country, and most temples are built within easy reach of the water. Sure, Egypt’s modern-day road and rail network can transport you to these temples overland, but if you skip a cruise on the Nile, the magic of the journey will certainly be missing.

How to choose a Nile cruise itinerary

The vast majority of Nile cruises operate in both directions between Luxor and Aswan in southern Egypt, making stops in Edfu, Kom Ombo and sometimes other small towns.

Which Nile cruise you pick depends on the usual two travel constraints: your budget and your time. Certain boats sail only on certain days, and Nile cruises can be as short as three days, but more commonly last five days.

Most luxury cruises on the Nile, including Viking’s Nile cruises, require signing up for a full Egypt-wide itinerary that starts and ends in Cairo , an excellent option for first-time visitors.

With little signage at historic sites and prices always open to negotiation, Egypt is a tricky place for independent travel. Unless you want to spend your precious vacation time bargaining with taxi drivers and tour guides everywhere you go, it’s best to join a tour for your first visit and leave the logistics to someone else.

What I liked in particular about Viking’s Pharaohs & Pyramids itinerary is that it includes two unusual stops that aren’t standard ports of call for most Nile cruises.

The ship travels north of Luxor to Qena for passengers to disembark and visit the gorgeous Temple of Hathor at Dendera , where the ceilings have recently been cleaned, exposing beautifully painted zodiac symbols and the warped body of the sky goddess Nut, who swallows the sun every night and gives birth to it the next morning.

The boat also stops in Esna for the Temple of Khnum , a small but wonderfully preserved structure. Look up to spot the column-topping capitals, each of which has a colorfully decorated, unique bouquet of palm fronds, bunches of grapes, lotus flowers and papyrus shoots.

In Luxor, you’ll get private access to the show-stopping tomb of Nefertari – arguably the most beautiful burial site in the entire country (and certainly the most expensive at LE1400, about US$72) where nearly every square inch is painted in stunningly vibrant bas-reliefs – as well as the chance to see the stark dichotomy of Egypt’s landscapes from the sky in the basket of a gently drifting hot air balloon.

Tours of the temples and tombs are led by local expert Egyptologists who explain and translate the meanings of the hieroglyphs before your very eyes.

A few companies offer Nile cruises from Cairo, but these sailings are rare, usually operating just once a month – if at all – and take significantly longer because of the distance involved. But you’ll get the chance to check out off-the-beaten-track tombs and temples between Cairo and Luxor that see few visitors.

What is it like on board the Viking Osiris ?

Decked out in a sleek Scandi color scheme of blond wood and blue textiles that are drenched in natural light thanks to huge floor-to-ceiling windows across much of the ship, the Viking Osiris is an oasis of calm that’s a treat to return to after a long and dusty day of exploring.

The cruise ship has 41 cabins across three decks, plus two upper levels with an indoor/outdoor dining space with windows that fold away for al fresco evenings, a cozy bar and lounge with a resident piano player in the evenings, an infinity-style pool at the back of the boat and a sun deck for days of lazy lounging.

Travelers can check out books from the on-board library’s exquisite collection to read up on Egyptian history on their voyage.

The guest rooms are surprisingly spacious, with comfy hotel-like beds, plenty of wardrobe and storage space, and good-sized bathrooms. Many staterooms come with balconies.

The ship is partially powered by solar panels, and you can see how much electricity is being generated by the sun as well as the carbon dioxide savings on a screen inside.

What travelers should know before visiting Egypt

Almost all nationalities need a visa to visit Egypt , which you can get on arrival at the airport or apply for online in advance if you’d rather skip the line. The cost of a single-entry Egyptian tourist visa is USD$25, payable in cash at the airport or by card online.

Egypt is a traditional, Muslim-majority country, so both men and women should dress modestly when visiting. For tips on what to pack, local etiquette and more, check these 14 things to help you plan your visit to Egypt .

Nile River Cruise: 9 Tips to Perfectly Cruise the Nile in Egypt

nile cruises egypt

Nile River cruises put you in the heart of ancient Egypt, just steps away from some of the most historic sites in the world. When cruising the Nile, you'll visit colorful bazaars, wander through ancient temples and learn about Egyptian deities, burial practices and culture.

If you're considering taking a river cruise on the Nile , properly prepare for your trip by checking out the following nine Nile cruise tips.

1. Cruising the Nile River 101

Cairo (Port Said) (Photo:Tunc Ozceber/Shutterstock)

When taking a Nile River cruise, you can either make your way south or north. If you're interested in the southbound option, you'll likely start your Nile river cruise in Cairo -- and for good reason.

Cairo is a bustling, vibrant city that's unlike anything many of us have experienced. Cairo is also home to the Great Pyramids and the Sphinx, though both require a bit of a journey from the city center.

Most Nile River cruise lines offer itineraries that bring guests in a day or three ahead of their cruise. Daily excursions will be offered to the best sites. The acclaimed Sphinx and the Pyramids are not to be missed.

Also located on the Giza Plateau is the Grand Egyptian Museum. This museum houses hundreds of thousands of antiquities, including those found in the tomb of the boy king, King Tut. You could spend days here, though most cruise excursions only stop here for a few hours.

From Cairo , you'll fly, usually by chartered plane, to Luxor , where you will join your cruise ship. Luxor is a magical port that's home to the famous Valley of the Kings. In some cases, you'll spend a couple days in Luxor to explore, either before or after your sailing.

While you can start your Nile cruise from Cairo, you also have the choice to make the journey in the opposite direction and travel northward. There are Nile River cruises from Aswan as well, typically making the same stops as those that start in Cairo or Luxor (depending on the specific itinerary and length).

Aswan is a historical city that holds ancient ruins, such as the Temple of Philae , a ruins complex located on Agilkia Island that was built in 280 BCE. The city offers other enticing excursions, like the Nubian Museum, which showcases the impressive history of Nubia (the area along the Nile between Aswan and Khartoum in Sudan).

Check out our Nile River Cruise map for a more detailed look at the options you have for a cruise on the Nile.

2. Nile River Cruise Itineraries: Short and Long Cruises for Every Style

Nile Adventurer

There is a Nile River cruise itinerary for every cruiser. However, the pace can be difficult, as some places are best viewed in the morning or at night, while others are perfect for the middle of the day. Ships often stop at two ports or more in a day.

3-Night Nile River Cruises: This shorter option usually departs from Aswan and sails to Luxor or vice versa.

You might visit the High Dam, the Unfinished Obelisk and the Temple of Philae in Aswan, Kom Ombo , Edfu and Esna. In Luxor, you'll see the Valley of the Kings, the Valley of the Queens and the Temple of Queen Hatshepsut.

4-Night Nile River Cruises: A four-night option leaves from Luxor and sails to Aswan or vice versa. You probably will see all of the above along with Luxor and Karnak temples, take a felucca (a traditional Egyptian sailboat) ride to the Botanical Island or a Nubian village, and see Elephantine Island and the Tombs of the Nobles.

For those who would like to extend their stay to see Abu Simbel Temple Complex , this is the cruise for you.

7-Night Nile River Cruises: Seven-night Nile River cruises from Aswan to Luxor or vice versa are also available. These itineraries include all of the above, but are divided over a week for a more relaxing trip.

Longer Nile River Cruise Vacations: Many of the big-name cruise lines offer longer journeys that generally include time in Cairo pre- and post-cruise. The cruise itself will be a round-trip sailing from Luxor or from Luxor to Aswan and will be similar to the seven-day options.

The payoff with these longer Nile River cruises is the extra time spent in Cairo, where you'll see the Giza Pyramids, the Sphinx and the impressive Grand Egyptian Museum.

3. Nile River Cruise Destinations: Vibrant Ports and Historic Sights Abound

Luxor (Photo:Elzbieta Sekowska/Shutterstock)

When you're cruising the Nile, you have the unique opportunity to witness and explore historical locations with ease. Here are some of the highlights you could see while on any of the above cruises on the Nile River.

Valley of the Kings : The tombs at the Valley of the Kings were constructed at some point during Egypt's New Kingdom period (1570 to 1069 BCE) and are still impressive even after all the finery was stolen by opportunistic gravediggers over the centuries.

The standard admission ticket includes three of 63 tombs. Ask your guide for recommendations of the best ones to see.

You can also pay extra to visit Tutankhamen's tomb. Although the treasures buried with King Tut are displayed at the Grand Egyptian Museum in Cairo, the tomb provides a glimpse of what is left of Egypt's most famous icon, the teenage king whose death remains a mystery.

Inside, there is a sarcophagus, painted walls showing his sisters and 11 baboons and King Tut's mummy.

Many cruise lines offer a morning hot-air balloon excursion over the Valley of the Kings. If you have a chance to try this, take it. It's an incredible voyage that shows the vastness of the Valley, the several cites still being unearthed and the contrast between the green banks of the Nile and the dry Sahara.

Temple of Karnak : This is the second-largest temple in the world (second only to Angkor Wat in Cambodia). The Temple of Karnak took 1,000 years to be built. When visiting this 200-acre temple, you can easily see the one-upmanship between a succession of pharaohs as you wander through it.

Look out for the statue of one of sun God Amun-Re 's incarnations -- a scarab beetle -- which symbolizes eternal life. Supposedly, if you walk around this sculpture three times, you're granted health, wealth and many children. But, if you walk around it five times, you'll get good luck and avoid envy.

Temple of Philae : Built to honor the goddess of motherhood and fertility, Isis, this was the last ancient temple built in the classical Egyptian architectural style. Construction began in approximately 280 BCE. The temple was moved from its original location on Philae Island to its new location on Agilkia Island after the flooding of Lake Nasser.

Don't miss the spectacular Sound and Light show at night here. Note the repurposing of the temple as a Christian church as well, with crosses carved into the older hieroglyph reliefs and images of the Egyptian gods carefully defaced. You'll also spot graffiti dating from the 1800s.

Luxor Temple : Above the upper part of Luxor Temple is a sacred mosque, built before the sand was swept away. On the outer walls you can faintly make out a painting of the last supper among the hieroglyphics, from a time when Christians were banned by the Romans from building churches.

Temple of Edfu : Dedicated to Horus, the falcon god of protection, Edfu is a Ptolemaic temple built in classic pharaonic style (237 to 57 B.C.) and is one of the best-preserved temples in Egypt.

Start with the first pylon with its two magnificent falcons. Then, admire the carvings inside that illustrate the Festival of the Beautiful Meeting, in which the statue of Horus joined the statue of Hathor at her temple in Dendera.

Kom Ombo : Dedicated to the gods Sobek (the crocodile god) and Haroeris (the winged god of medicine and one of the oldest incarnations of Horus), the Temple of Kom Ombo is known for its wall reliefs, which show ancient surgical and dental tools. You can also see ancient mummified crocodiles in The Crocodile Museum .

4. Nile River Cruise Lines: Major Lines and Local Players Are Both Options

Viking Osiris (Photo: Colleen McDaniel)

Nile River cruise lines appeal to a wide range of passengers. A number of cruise lines sail the Nile River, from bigger companies who sail around the world to smaller companies that specialize in only Egypt.

Cruise lines sailing the Nile River include Viking , Avalon Waterways , Abercrombie & Kent , Sanctuary Retreats , AmaWaterways , Movenpick, eWaterways, Uniworld , Sonesta Nile Cruises, Nile Exploration, Oberoi and Travcoa.

Luxury Nile River cruises have become a big part of the experience. The top luxury Nile River cruises are Uniworld, Viking, Sanctuary Retreats and Abercrombie & Kent.

Some ocean cruise lines, such as P&O Cruises , MSC Cruises and Silversea offer day trips to Luxor and Aswan when their ships dock in Safaga on the coast of the Red Sea. It's an alternative way to visit some of the famous temples while seeing more than just the Nile.

5. Nile River Cruise Packing: What to Bring on Your Adventure

Viking Osiris christening ceremony on the Nile (Photo: Colleen McDaniel)

What to Wear on a Nile Cruise: Women

More than 90% of the citizens of Egypt are Muslims. Most local women wear modest dress, including head covers. Long-sleeved tops and ankle-length skirts are the norm for Egyptian women.

That being said, visitors to the area aren't expected to dress in the same fashion. Still, shorts and tank tops may draw looks among more conservative Egyptians.

However, you should still pack less revealing clothing to show respect, especially in religious areas that require such wear. Note that mosques require everyone to have their legs and arms covered.

A wardrobe of loose capris or trousers and blouses will make you feel more comfortable. We're big fans of linen, which is breathable even in the heat and wears well. Stick with light colors (whites and pastels), as dark colors will simply absorb the heat.

Bring along a floppy hat, sunglasses and a scarf, all of which can assist in protecting you from the sun and heat. You'll definitely need reliable walking shoes as well.

Many cruises offer an Egyptian night, where guests are encouraged to wear a jalabiya , which is a traditional Egyptian gown. These can be purchased in ports for less than $15 or $20.

Onboard your ship, sleeveless tops or dresses and shorter skirts are acceptable.

What to Wear on a Nile Cruise: Men

For men, anything goes when it comes to dress code . Still, you will probably stand out if you wear shorts, as most Egyptians wear trousers or jalabiya.

A good sun hat, great walking shoes and sunglasses are encouraged as well. For Egyptian night, men also will wear jalabiya, which can be purchased in port.

What Else to Pack for a Nile River Cruise

Be aware that Egypt has a hot climate no matter the time of year, so staying hydrated is a must. It's likely that your cruise line will provide ample bottled water for you, so you probably won't need a reusable water bottle.

Keep in mind that tap water in Egypt has been known to upset travelers' stomachs. In fact, you'll likely be brushing your teeth with bottled water. You should also avoid raw vegetables and swimming in the Nile or its canals because of the risk of exposure to bacterial and other infections. Be sure to always peel fruits before eating them.

Anti-diarrheal medication and antacids can really come in handy in case any issues should arise, so you should pack these along as a precaution.

You will need a good bug spray, as flying pests -- mosquitoes and flies in particular -- are ever-present. Don't forget your sunscreen as well.

6. Nile River Cruise Weather: Aim for Shoulder Season or Winter Months

Infinity Pool aboard Viking Osiris (Photo: Colleen McDaniel)

Since the Aswan High Dam opened in 1971, the Nile River depth has been regulated, depending on the needs of navigation and irrigation. It generally doesn't face the same high- or low-water issues that sometimes affect Europe's rivers . So even in the hottest weather, you'll have smooth sailing.

Egypt river cruises on the Nile mostly run from August through May, pausing for the extreme heat of summer. The best time to cruise the Nile River is October to April in terms of weather. However, be prepared to experience crowds during this time because it's the busiest season.

These shoulder seasons , which are spring and fall, come with milder temperatures that range between 70 to 90 degrees. Temperatures drop significantly at night, down into the 50s in the spring.

Offseason Weather Is Wildly Variable, But You'll See Fewer Tourists

If you travel to Egypt in August and even into September, it is brutally hot, with daytime temperatures reaching 110 degrees and above. This can curb your sightseeing resolve, as you will find yourself walking among ancient ruins under the blazing sun.

That said, guides truly pay attention to their guests, and they seek shade whenever possible. You'll also have far fewer street vendors vying for your attention than you would in the high season.

Egypt cruises in the winter are significantly cooler, especially at night. You'll see a range of temperatures from the 50s to 70s, and you'll be fairly comfortable when you're out on your excursions.

7. Nile River Cruise Costs: Look to Short Cruises for a Bargain

Embarking on a sunrise hot air balloon excursion over the Valley of the Kings (Photo: Colleen McDaniel)

The cost of a Nile River cruise varies greatly depending on what cruise lines you book with, the length of your cruise and when you're sailing.

If you book with the cruise lines best known to American and European travelers -- companies like Viking, AmaWaterways, Abercrombie & Kent, Avalon Waterways and Uniworld -- you'll pay a higher price than you would with less familiar companies, such as Movenpick, Oberoi and Sonesta.

For a 10-day trip with the more popular cruise lines, you are likely to pay anywhere from about $3,900 per person to $7,600. You might pay somewhere from $5,200 to $12,300 for a 12-day journey. The cost generally includes your hotel, transfers, cruise, all your meals, some alcohol and even the flight from Cairo to Luxor.

With less familiar Nile cruise lines, shorter itineraries are more common. You can find three-night cruises starting at around $600 per person and four-night journeys from $750. Seven-night cruises can start as low as $1,200 but are less inclusive.

Cruises during the fall and into the winter, especially around the holidays , are the most expensive, while cruises in the heat of summer are the cheapest.

Extra Costs on a Nile River Cruise

Depending on your chosen river cruise line, you should expect to pay extra for certain items.

Some examples of for-fee items on a Nile River cruise in Egypt include alcoholic drinks onboard outside of mealtime, tips for crew , guides and drivers, flights to and from Egypt, add-on cruise extensions (Jordan is a popular add-on), and spa treatments or shopping. Some premium shore excursions also will come with a cost.

Carry some small Egyptian coins because tipping for services, like the bathroom attendant, is a common practice. You can pay in U.S. dollars, euros or pounds, but change will be given in Egyptian pounds, and the exchange won't be favorable.

8. Is a Nile River Cruise Safe?

Entrance to the Abu Simbel temple complex (Photo: Anton_Ivanov/Shutterstock.com)

A Nile River cruise is as safe as most major river cruises around the world. While this region has seen spasms of religious violence in the past, there have been no terrorist incidents along the Nile in more than 10 years.

That being said, it's likely that you'll have armed escorts onboard your cruise ship and as you're visiting ports and seeing the sights. For many people, this can be a bit jarring but also somewhat reassuring.

Note: As with virtually everyone else you'll encounter doing service work in Egypt, tipping guards is an acceptable -- and sometimes expected -- practice, especially if you have the same guard the entire week. A rate of $2 U.S. per person, per day is a good guideline.

9. Nile River Cruise Shopping: Put Your Bargaining Skills to the Test

Aswan, Egypt (Photo: Marcel Bakker/Shutterstock)

Vendors are aggressive in Egypt, and this can make some guests uncomfortable. They will approach you closely, speaking perfect English, and try to put their goods in your hands. But don't confuse their intensity for danger.

If you're not interested in purchasing anything, simply ignore them and their attempts. Don't make eye contact or even say no. Wearing sunglasses can be especially helpful here.

If you do decide to buy something, know that just about everything is negotiable. This is especially true with the vendors, who sell all manner of souvenirs near the monuments' docks. Their pitches seem benign enough, but they can be aggressive once they have your attention.

A general rule of thumb: Offer half the asking price to start, and don't hand over any money until your purchase price has been settled and the item is in your hand. Also, take care to study your change. Pound notes and the much smaller piaster notes look similar.

Diverse Cruise Types: A Journey for Every Traveler

The Nile cruise experience is as varied as the landscapes it traverses. From long, luxurious voyages to short, immersive trips, there’s a journey for every type of traveler.

Long Egypt Nile Cruise: A Deep Dive into Egypt’s Heart

Certainly! Here’s the revised version with emphasis on “long cruise” to Long cruises along the Nile, extending from Cairo to Luxor or Aswan, are not merely voyages; they are an expansive exploration spanning 9 to 15 days, thoughtfully curated for history aficionados and culture enthusiasts. These long cruises are a profound journey through Egypt’s rich mosaic of history, culture, and awe-inspiring landscapes, offering a distinctive mix of relaxation and exploration.

What distinguishes these long cruises is their unparalleled access to both the globally acclaimed attractions like the magnificent Great Pyramids of Giza, the mysterious Sphinx, and the vast temple complexes of Luxor, as well as to the secluded treasures of ancient Egypt that elude the typical tourist itinerary. Among these hidden jewels are the Meidum Pyramid s, which shed light on the evolution of pyramid construction; the exquisite noble’s tombs in El Minya, offering insights into the lives of ancient Egyptian elites; and the ancient remnants of El Kab, echoing tales of past splendors.

nile cruises egypt

Furthermore, a long cruise on the Nile unveils the splendor of Abydos Temple , an essential archaeological site and ancient Egyptian pilgrimage destination, renowned for its detailed reliefs and as the mythological burial site of Osiris. Dendera, with its remarkably preserved temple dedicated to Hathor, the goddess of love and joy, features one of the most intact temple complexes in Egypt, adorned with vivid ceiling paintings that have endured through ages.

Opting for a long Nile cruise thus provides a unique opportunity to delve into these less-visited sites, offering a chance to venture beyond the conventional tourist path and immerse in the lesser-known aspects and sounds of ancient Egypt. This voyage is more than a simple tour; it’s an intimate exploration into the essence of Egypt, where each stop along the lush banks of the Nile unfolds a chapter in a millennia-spanning narrative, inviting travelers to discover the hidden marvels that await beyond the familiar facades of Egypt’s most famous landmarks.

Through this immersive experience, travelers not only witness the majestic sights but also gain a profound understanding of Egypt’s ancient civilization, its lasting impact, and the complex web of its cultural heritage, making long Nile cruises a matchless journey back in time.

Short Nile Cruises,

“Though termed ‘short’ in contrast to their longer counterparts, Aswan to Luxor cruises, or Luxor to Aswan Nile Cruises as well as the Nile Cruise Luxor to Aswan, represent the most popular and cherished form of Nile exploration among travelers to Egypt. Typically spanning three to seven nights, these journeys navigate the heart of ancient Egypt, effortlessly connecting Luxor and Aswan. They offer guests a unique opportunity to traverse the Nile in either direction, ensuring they witness the most iconic landmarks in both cities, along with the captivating sites nestled along the river’s path.”

A four-night voyage traditionally embarks on Mondays from Luxor, setting off on a journey rich with historical discovery, while a three-night journey commences on Fridays from Aswan, each itinerary carefully crafted to showcase the splendor of ancient civilizations that flourished along the Nile’s banks. For those wishing to immerse themselves further, a seven-night cruise option is available. This extended voyage can begin either in Luxor or Aswan, looping back to the starting point, and is designed for travelers seeking a more leisurely pace and in-depth exploration of the Nile’s treasures.

nile cruises egypt

These shorter Nile cruises are ideal for visitors who wish to balance the exploration of Egypt’s ancient marvels with the constraints of time, providing a condensed yet comprehensive experience of the Nile’s historical and cultural landscape. Whether embarking from Luxor or Aswan, travelers could delve into the heart of Egypt’s heritage, experiencing firsthand the awe-inspiring temples, tombs, and monuments that have captivated humanity for millennia.

Lake Nasser Cruise

Lake Nasser Cruises, akin to their Nile counterparts in duration, offer a unique voyage that is both concise and profoundly enriching. These cruises, navigating the vast expanse between Abu Simbel and Aswan, present an unparalleled opportunity to explore the serene beauty and monumental legacy of ancient Nubia.

Similar to the short Nile cruises, Lake Nasser cruises typically range from three to seven nights, tailored to fit the schedules of those seeking an adventure into the heart of ancient civilizations without the commitment of a lengthy journey. The experience is distinctly unique, focusing on the majestic Abu Simbel temples, a testament to the grandeur of Pharaonic architecture and engineering, and the tranquil waters of Lake Nasser, set against a backdrop of stark desert landscapes.

nile cruises egypt

Whether embarking on a three-night journey or opting for a more extended seven-night exploration, travelers on Lake Nasser cruises are treated to a meticulously curated itinerary. This itinerary not only showcases the awe-inspiring temples of Abu Simbel, which were famously relocated to their current site as part of a massive UNESCO -led project, but also includes a selection of lesser-known archaeological sites and natural wonders along the lake’s shores, accessible only by boat.

Lake Nasser cruises offer a unique blend of relaxation, adventure, and historical exploration, providing an intimate glimpse into the ancient Nubian civilization and the modern feats of engineering that have preserved its legacy. For travelers intrigued by the mysteries of Egypt’s past and the enchanting beauty of its landscapes, a cruise on Lake Nasser is an unforgettable journey into the depths of history, set against the tranquil backdrop of one of the largest man-made lakes in the world.

Feluccas are a testament to Egypt’s enduring maritime heritage. Unlike their motorized counterparts, these sailboats rely solely on the breeze of the Nile and the skill of the Nubian sailors, offering a tranquil and eco-friendly way to travel. This mode of transport has been used for centuries, connecting you not just to the stunning landscapes but also to a rich cultural history.

nile cruises egypt

  • Cultural Immersion : Felucca journeys often include stops at smaller villages and islands along the Nile, offering a glimpse into the daily lives of local communities. This is a chance to interact with locals, learn about their traditions, and experience the genuine hospitality of the Egyptian people.
  • Stargazing Nights : Sleeping on deck under a canopy of stars is a magical experience. Away from the light pollution of cities, the night sky over the Nile offers an incredible view of constellations and shooting stars, making for unforgettable evenings.
  • Traditional Egyptian Cuisine : Meals on a felucca are usually prepared by the crew and offer a taste of authentic Egyptian home cooking. This often includes freshly caught fish from the Nile, along with a variety of local vegetables and bread.
  • Flexibility and Simplicity : Feluccas are small and agile, able to dock at various points of interest that are not accessible to larger vessels. The simplicity of a felucca journey is part of its charm, offering a peaceful and unstructured travel experience.

Comfort Levels and Customization

Feluccas come in various comfort levels, catering to different preferences and budgets. While they are generally more basic than luxury cruise ships, many have been outfitted with comfortable sleeping arrangements and basic amenities to ensure a pleasant journey. Travelers can choose from a range of options, from very basic setups for the more adventurous to more upgraded feluccas with enhanced comfort features.

Sustainable and Eco-Friendly Travel

Choosing a felucca cruise is also a decision to travel sustainably. These sailboats have a minimal environmental impact, relying on wind power and causing no pollution to the pristine waters of the Nile.

A felucca journey is more than just a trip; it’s a voyage through time, offering a glimpse into the ancient way of life along the Nile. It’s an experience that connects you to the history, culture, and natural beauty of Egypt in a profound and personal way.

Tailor-made holiday to egypt, best time for a nile river cruise.

The best time for a Nile River cruise depends on your preferences and what you want to experience during your journey. Generally, the peak tourist season in Egypt is from October to April, when the weather is more temperate, making it an ideal time for a Nile cruise. During this period, the temperatures are milder, ranging from 20°C to 30°C (68°F to 86°F), making it comfortable for sightseeing and outdoor activities.

If you prefer cooler weather and fewer crowds, October, November, and February are great options. During these months, you can enjoy pleasant temperatures and have a more intimate experience exploring the ancient sites along the Nile.

Due to the Christmas and New Year holidays, December and January are considered the high season. While the temperatures can drop slightly, it is still a popular time to visit, so booking your Nile cruise well in advance is advisable.

What are the available Nile cruise packages in Egypt?

If you are bored of visiting the ancient monuments, you can take up Nile River Cruises in Egypt for a change. These are fun activities and can be very refreshing. Here are some best picks-

  • Egypt Nile Cruise from Aswan to Luxor
  • Egypt Nile Cruise from Luxor to Aswan
  • River cruise tour through Cairo, Giza, Aswan
  • A river cruise through Cairo, Luxor, Dendera

What is a Nile Cruise?

A Nile Cruise is a river cruise on the Nile, the most common route between Luxor and Aswan in Upper Egypt. The ship makes several stops at different stations to allow its passengers to visit the ancient Egyptian monuments. It is the best way to take a trip into the past to get close to the pharaonic culture and enjoy the breathtaking nature of the Nile Valley.

As already mentioned, most Nile cruise ships operate between Luxor and Aswan. The trip south from Luxor to Aswan takes 5 days and vice versa from Aswan to Luxor takes 4 days.

During the journey, the most important monuments in Upper Egypt are visited. In Luxor, one visits the Luxor temple and the Karnak temple, one of the biggest temple arrangements of Egypt on the eastern Nile shore Theben east. On the western side in Thebes-West the temple of Hatshepsut, the Colossi of Memnon, and the Valley of the Kings.

In Aswan, the dam, the Unfinished Obelisk, and the Philae Temple on Elephant Island are visited. Between both cities, the Horus Temple in Edfu and the double temple of the two gods Sobek and Haroeris in Kom Ombo are visited.

When the ship docks at Aswan, passengers can make an optional excursion to Abu Simbel on Lake Nasser to visit the impressive temple complex of Ramses II.

There are very few ships that sail the route in a different period and then make a few more sights, but here we have introduced you to what most ships do.

Also, there is the big or long Nile cruise that goes from Aswan or Luxor to Cairo or of course vice versa. This takes place however only at certain times because of the Nile level, which is why most visitors to Egypt prefer a short stay in Cairo, after or before the Nile cruise in Upper Egypt, if you want to see the sights of all Egypt.

How does the Nile Cruise work?

The duration of a Nile cruise varies according to the route the ship takes. There is either the small Nile cruise, which only goes in Upper Egypt from Luxor to Aswan or vice versa, and the long or large Nile cruise, which goes from Cairo to Luxor or Aswan and vice versa. From Luxor to Aswan it takes 5 days and from Aswan to Luxor 4 days.

It is also possible to go from Luxor to Aswan and back to Luxor and in this case the trip takes 8 days. The same is valid of course for the journey Aswan-Aswan. The ships that make the long Nile cruise are considerably less than those that travel between Luxor and Aswan, and besides, this cruise is only possible at certain times of the year due to the level of the Nile.

There are very few fleets of ships, among which the two Oberoi Nile cruise ships Philae and Zahra, which make the route between Luxor and Aswan at a different time of year. They sail from Luxor to Aswan or vice versa in 6 or 7 days. With all the rest of the ships the journey takes the same time as mentioned above, the only difference is the day of the week when the respective ship starts the journey.

On the way between Aswan and Luxor, one visits different beautiful sights for example, in Thebes-East (Karnak and Luxor Temple), then in Thebes-West (Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut Temple, Memnon Colossus). Afterward one visits the legendary Horus Temple in Edfu and the double temple in Kom Ombo. Do not miss the chance and take part in one of our Nile cruises.

Which deck to choose on the Nile Cruise?

Actually, you are only in the cabin for sleeping and therefore you should not pay too much attention to it, but we still want to give you some useful tips and advice on how to choose the right cabin.

In general, cabins in the middle deck are the most popular because it is the quietest there. On the upper deck, you will be disturbed by the pattering on the sun deck and you can hear it when tables or sunbeds are pushed.

On the Nile deck, you may hear the engines in the cabins in the stern. But it is important to mention that the ship almost always sails during the day and therefore the engines are off at night while the guests are sleeping.

For the same reason it is rather unimportant on which side your cabin is, because the ship sails almost exclusively during the day, you will have a view on the Nile anyway.

During the times when your ship will be onshore and the view from another ship is blocked on one side, you will either be on a sightseeing tour or you will sleep.

As we told you above, the guests are in their cabins almost only at night to sleep, otherwise, you are either on a tour, in the restaurant for breakfast, lunch, or dinner, in the bar, or lying by the pool on the sun deck.

When is the best time for a Nile Cruise?

The Nile Cruise is a river cruise on the Nile, the most frequent between Luxor and Aswan in Upper Egypt. The ship makes several stops at different stations to allow its passengers to visit the ancient Egyptian monuments. It is the best way to take a trip into the past to get close to the pharaonic culture and enjoy the breathtaking nature of the Nile Valley.

The best time for a Nile cruise in Upper Egypt can not be determined, because it depends on the interests of the visitor and his resilience in heat. One could only say that the Nile Valley in summer (May to September) can be too hot for most European visitors. The temperatures in Luxor and Aswan are about 45° and therefore it is not suitable for a Nile cruise especially for people who cannot stand the heat or who have circulation problems.

In the months from October to April, the maximum temperature is 30° and therefore one could say that this is the optimal time for a Nile cruise. If you plan bathing stay at the Red Sea after or before the Nile cruise in Upper Egypt, you should consider that it can be rather too cold for bathing in the winter months (December to February). At this time the temperatures in Hurghada and Sharm El-Sheik can sink up to 10°.

But it is also worth mentioning that the heat in Upper Egypt is dry and that the above mentioned high temperatures are only under the sun and that it is mostly bearable in the shade. Therefore, despite the heat, some travelers still decide to go on a Nile cruise in the summer months.

The ships are seldom fully occupied and one can avoid the crowds at the monuments. Most of the sightseeing tours take place early in the morning and the tour guide always looks for a place in the shade if he wants to explain something to the group. Also, the prices fall at this time and one finds a lot of special offers for a Nile cruise in Upper Egypt.

What clothes do you pack for the Nile Cruise?

Every place has its matching clothes, even on the sundeck. Because of this, you should consider appropriate clothing if you want to travel. For example, half-naked during temple visits are not normal and customary. On high-quality luxury Nile cruises, you can choose something more festive to wear. Your suitable, carefully chosen clothes will distinguish you from the ship’s restaurant crew and you will, therefore, follow the dress code correctly.

Every place has its suitable clothes, even on the sun deck. Because of this, you should consider appropriate clothing when you travel. For example, half-naked during temple visits are not normal and customary. On high-quality luxury Nile cruises, you can choose something more festive to wear.

Your suitable, carefully chosen clothes will distinguish you from the ship’s restaurant crew and you will, therefore, follow the dress code correctly.

As far as women are concerned, unlike most Upper Egyptian cities, it is quite alright for women to walk in shorts and spaghetti straps, or to lie down comfortably in Bikini by the pool. Luxor and Aswan are two of the most important tourist destinations in the world and their inhabitants have been used to the European way of dressing for a long time and show a great tolerance towards different cultures.

However, shorts and flip-flops or sandals are forbidden for men as well as for women in the restaurant of the ship. You do not necessarily have to wear a suit or an evening dress for lunch, but you are expected to wear at least a pair of jeans and a T-shirt.

Onboard, the program includes a Nubian show, Galabya party, or belly dance show. There are nice costumes, which you can buy with the help of your guide from the market during the excursions.

On excursions, you should pay attention to appropriate clothing, so miniskirts or shorts are not recommended. Half-naked through the temples does not go down well.

A further hint would be sturdy shoes for the sightseeing tours. Please note that the monuments you will visit are located in the desert. You will also often have to walk a distance until you reach the temple or until you have seen all parts of the huge temple complexes. Many women in Egypt wear a hijab/headscarf, but this is not required for tourists. You will need to cover your head with a headscarf when you visit a mosque.

Don’t miss the chance and choose one of our Egypt Nile Cruise Packages, where you will learn about the ancient fascinating history.

Tipping on a Nile cruise

Is it customary to tip on a Nile cruise? As is common in the cruise world, it is customary, or rather expected, to tip on board. The staff on the ship will do their best to make the stay of their guests as pleasant as possible, and are therefore happy to receive the tip in appreciation of this.

Is it obligatory to tip on board? You can never say that tipping is obligatory, but unfortunately, it has come to pass that the staff of the ships see tipping as a fixed part of their remuneration due to the low payments in Egypt. But as already mentioned, this is not mandatory and if you think at the end of the trip, which is very rarely the case, that the staff has not earned the tip, then tell the Reileiter and tell him the reason right away.

Who should I give the money to? The tour guide will come to you at the end of the trip and ask nicely and politely about the tip, which is collected from the guests and then distributed among the crew. It is therefore collected so that everyone gets something because the guests do not come into contact with all the staff on board. It would be possible to tip the bartender directly during the cruise, but in this case, it would be unfair to cooks or machinists you don’t usually meet.

How much should I tip? There are of course no exact figures as to how much you should pay, but about 5$ per day per person, for every adult in the family, is reasonable. If you think this amount is too much, imagine there are about 50 people on board to make sure you feel comfortable during the trip.

How long does a Nile cruise typically last?

A Nile cruise typically lasts between 3 to 7 nights, depending on the itinerary and your specific package.

What are the must-visit destinations during a Nile cruise?

Some must-visit destinations during a Nile cruise include Luxor, Aswan, Kom Ombo, Edfu, and the Valley of the Kings. These places are known for their historical significance and stunning archaeological sites.

What is included in a Nile cruise package?

Nile cruise packages generally include accommodation on the cruise ship, meals, guided tours to various historical sites, and entertainment on board. Some packages may also include airport transfers and additional excursions.

How much does a Nile cruise package cost?

The cost of a Nile cruise package varies depending on factors such as the duration of the cruise, the level of luxury, and the time of year. Prices can range from a few hundred dollars for budget options to several thousand dollars for luxury cruises.

Is it safe to take a Nile cruise in Egypt?

Nile cruises in Egypt are considered safe for tourists. The government and tourism authorities take extensive measures to ensure the safety and security of travelers, including increased security presence at tourist sites and along the Nile River.

Can I book a Nile cruise online?

Yes, booking a Nile cruise online through various travel agencies, tour operators, or cruise companies’ websites is possible. It’s recommended to book in advance to secure your preferred dates and cabin category.

What are the types of cabins available on a Nile cruise ship?

Nile cruise ships offer a range of cabin options, including standard cabins, suites, and luxury suites. Each cabin has amenities like a private bathroom, air conditioning, and comfortable bedding.

What are the dining options on a Nile cruise?

Nile cruise ships typically have a main dining room for buffet-style meals. Some ships also have additional restaurants or lounges that offer a la carte menus or themed dining experiences. Vegetarian and dietary restriction options are usually available upon request.

My trip to egypt was nothing short of extraordinary, and I am truly grateful for your service and attention to detail you provided. When I arrived in Egypt, I was greeted with warmth and hospitality. The transfers from the airport were smooth and efficient, and I was immediately whisked away to my accommodations.

I had the most incredible experience with Egypt Planners on my recent trip to Giza Pyramids. The tour was very organized, and our guide Sara, was amazing. From start to finish, they exceeded my expectations. Our driver Ahmed was very professional and kind. I can’t recommend Egypt Planners enough for an unforgettable…..

I recently enjoyed taking a half-day Giza Pyramids tour with Egypt Planners, and I cannot recommend it more highly. Our tour guide, Sarah, was incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about the pyramids and Egyptian history. Things to know about River Nile Cruises All Inclusive

What is the best month for a nile cruise.

The best time for a Nile cruise depends on your preferences and what you want to experience during your journey. However, many travelers find that the optimal months for a Nile cruise are between October and April. During this period, the weather is generally mild, and the temperatures are more comfortable for exploring both on and off the boat. You can expect pleasant daytime temperatures ranging from 70°F to 85°F (21°C to 29°C), making it ideal for sightseeing and enjoying outdoor activities. Additionally, the Nile’s water levels are typically higher during these months, ensuring smooth sailing and access to a wider range of destinations along the river. These months are also a great time for birdwatching, as migratory birds flock to the Nile Delta.

What is the average cost of a Nile River cruise?

The cost of a Nile River cruise can vary significantly based on several factors. The standard price range for a mid-range cruise can be approximately $1,000 to $3,000 per person for a 4-7 day cruise. Luxury cruises can cost significantly more, ranging from $3,000 to $10,000 or even higher per person. The price depends on factors such as the cruise duration, the type of cabin or suite you choose, the cruise line, the time of year, and the level of luxury you desire. It’s worth noting that some cruises may include excursions, while others may charge extra for them. Additionally, be prepared for additional expenses for tips and alcoholic beverages. However, the memories and experiences you gain from a Nile cruise are usually considered well worth the investment.

Is a Nile cruise worth it?

Absolutely, a Nile cruise is undoubtedly worth the experience. It’s a unique and fascinating way to explore one of the world’s most historically significant and culturally rich regions. You’ll get to witness ancient temples, archaeological sites, and modern Egyptian life all from the comfort of a cruise ship. The convenience of unpacking only once while visiting multiple historical sites along the river is unparalleled. The Nile River has been the lifeblood of Egypt for centuries, and its banks are dotted with numerous historical wonders, including Luxor, Aswan, and the Valley of the Kings. Moreover, the luxury and service on many Nile cruises are exceptional. While it can be a significant financial investment, the memories and knowledge gained are priceless.

Are drinks expensive on a Nile cruise?

Drinks on a Nile cruise can vary in cost depending on the cruise line and the level of luxury you choose. In general, drinks can be relatively expensive, particularly when compared to prices in local establishments. The prices for alcoholic beverages like cocktails, wine, and beer on a Nile cruise may be comparable to those in upscale restaurants or hotels. Non-alcoholic drinks like water, soda, and juices are more reasonably priced. To save on costs, some travelers opt for all-inclusive packages that cover drinks or purchase drink packages at the beginning of the cruise. It’s essential to review the beverage pricing structure and options offered by your chosen cruise to budget accordingly.

Why are Nile Cruises so expensive?

Nile cruises often come with a higher price tag due to several factors. Firstly, maintaining and operating cruise ships on the Nile requires considerable investment in maintenance, crew salaries, and amenities. Additionally, the historical and cultural significance of the destinations along the Nile River adds to the cost. Visiting ancient temples and archaeological sites often involves fees contributing to the overall expense. Luxury cruises, in particular, provide top-notch service, gourmet dining, and a range of amenities, which naturally come at a higher cost. Moreover, the exclusivity and unique experiences Nile Cruises offers, such as personalized guided tours and the opportunity to witness iconic sights, contribute to the higher prices. While Nile cruises can be expensive, they offer a once-in-a-lifetime chance to explore ancient Egypt in comfort and style.

Is food included on a Nile cruise?

Food options on a Nile cruise can vary depending on the cruise line and package you choose. Many Nile cruises offer full board, which includes breakfast, lunch, and dinner as part of the package. These meals are often served buffet-style or à la carte, depending on the cruise. The quality and variety of the cuisine can vary, but luxury cruises generally provide gourmet dining experiences, while mid-range options offer good-quality meals. Some cruise lines also offer special themed dinners and local cuisine to enhance your culinary experience. Snacks and light refreshments may be available between meals, but you should check with your chosen cruise line to understand the specifics of their meal offerings.

Do you see pyramids on a Nile cruise?

A Nile cruise typically does not take you directly to the pyramids at Giza, as these iconic landmarks are located near Cairo, which is quite a distance from the main cruise route along the Nile. However, many cruise itineraries do include pre- or post-cruise options to visit the pyramids and other attractions in Cairo. These side trips typically involve a flight or a long bus ride to reach the Giza Plateau. Nevertheless, the journey itself along the Nile offers incredible views of the Egyptian countryside, ancient temples, and unique cultural experiences. If seeing the pyramids is a priority, it’s worth considering a Nile cruise package that includes this excursion or extending your stay in Egypt to explore them separately.

How many days do you need on a Nile cruise?

The ideal duration for a Nile cruise can vary depending on your interests and the specific sites you want to explore. A standard Nile cruise typically ranges from 3 to 7 days, with the most common duration being around 7 days. This provides a good balance of time to visit major historical sites such as Luxor, Aswan, and the Valley of the Kings while also allowing for relaxation and enjoying the amenities on board. A 7-day cruise usually covers the main highlights, but if you have specific places you want to visit or prefer a shorter or longer cruise, options are available to suit your preferences. A 3-4 day cruise is a quick introduction to the Nile’s wonders, while longer cruises give you more in-depth exploration and relaxation time.

Where is the best place to start a cruise on the Nile?

The two most common embarkation points for Nile cruises are Luxor and Aswan. The choice of where to start your cruise depends on your itinerary and the sites you want to explore. Luxor, often called the “world’s greatest open-air museum,” is a fantastic place to start your cruise. It allows you to explore iconic sites like the Karnak Temple, Luxor Temple, and the Valley of the Kings. Aswan is another popular starting point, known for its serene beauty and places like the Philae Temple and the High Dam. Some travelers start in Aswan and sail north to Luxor, while others opt for the reverse route. The choice largely depends on your personal preferences and the specific itinerary offered by the cruise line. Luxor and Aswan have airports with good connections to other parts of Egypt, making it convenient to begin your Nile adventure from either location.

How to Pick the Best Nile Cruise in Egypt: Our Top Tips

Egyptians have been cruising down the Nile for thousands of years, so it makes sense that a  Nile River cruise  is one of the best ways to see and explore some of the top attractions and sites that this country has to offer. However, since it’s such a popular way to travel through Egypt there is no shortage of Nile cruise options which can make things a little tricky and confusing for those booking or planning a Nile cruise for the first time. Don’t worry though, in this article we’re going to break down the differences in Nile cruises including the top things to look for and consider for when it comes time for you to book your own  Egypt tour .

nile cruise

What Do You See on a Nile Cruise?

Most Nile cruises travel between  Luxor  and  Aswan , stopping at key points of interest along the way which are:

Luxor is home to several of Egypt’s most inspiring and interesting attractions. Here you can find  the Valley of Kings , filled with the tombs of ancient Pharaohs of years past. While many of these tombs have been discovered, many still remain hidden in these hills. You’ll also see some of the country’s best known temples:  Karnak Temple ,  Luxor Temple , and the Temple of Queen  Hatshepsut .

Additional sites worth noting are the Colossi of Memnon, the Valley of the Queens, and several museums including the fascinating mummification museum. Luxor is also one of the top places in the world for a  hot air balloon ride . See the  Nile river  and the Valley of the Kings from above as the dawn breaks, it’s a magical experience.

Queen Hatshepsut Temple in Luxor

The temple of Edfu , which is dedicated to the god Horus, is one of the top temples to visit in Egypt for one main reason: it’s the best preserved temple in the country. Edfu temple managed to escape damage from the Nile floods and the carvings and hieroglyphics here have been incredibly helpful to archeologists and Egyptologists in terms of learning about the temple rituals of ancient Egypt.

The temple of Edfu is the second biggest temple in Egypt (Karnak being the largest) and took over 200 years to build. Some of the most notable attractions within the temple include the Nilometer, which was used to measure the height of the Nile to help predict future harvests, the Passage of Victory, which depicts the battle between Horus and Seth, and the Hypostyle Hall where you can find carvings of the ingredients and recipes needed to make different perfumes.

Kom Ombo  is just a small stop, but the temple is definitely worth a visit. It’s an interesting temple because it is dedicated to two different ancient Egyptian gods; Horus the falcon god and Sobek the crocodile god. Even though it is one temple, it has two of everything: entrances, halls, courts, and sanctuaries.

Another must-see in Kom Ombo is the crocodile museum. Perhaps you saw the human mummies in the museum in Egypt, but here you can see 22 mummies of crocodiles. You’ll even get to see some crocodile coffins- bet you haven’t seen one of those before!

Aswan , in southern Egypt, will likely be the start or end point of your Nile cruise depending on which direction you choose to go. Aswan doesn’t have the massive temples that Luxor does, but it still has plenty to see and do including  the Nubian village , the spice market, and the beautiful botanical gardens. From Aswan, you can also see the famous  High Dam  along the  temple of Philae  which is dedicated to Horus, and Elephantine Island which has plenty of interesting ancient artefacts.

Aswan is also the gateway for one of Egypt’s most impressive and important ancient attractions:  Abu Simbel . Those who want to see this incredible site can take a short flight from Aswan or a three-hour car journey.

Don’t forget, one of the big reasons why a Nile cruise is such a great way to see Egypt is because of the scenic cruising. As you pass through the cities listed above you’ll be able to see some of the monuments and attractions all lit up in the dark. While, during the day, you’ll pass beautiful Nile vistas where you can see local Egyptian communities and gorgeous landscapes.

It is also possible to do a longer Nile cruise that starts in  Cairo  and ends in Aswan, however, these are not as popular due to how long they are. Most people prefer the Luxor-Aswan route as it can be done in less than a week, allowing you to spend the rest of your  Egypt vacation  exploring others parts of the country. That being said, it is an option if you would like to do a 2-week cruise.

Things to Consider When Choosing a Nile Cruise

How long do you want to cruise for.

One of the first thing you will want to determine is how long you want to cruise for. Do you only have a couple of days? Or do you have a week? Cruises vary in length, even though go along the same route.

Some cruises are as short as 4 days, 3 nights but to really get the best experience it is recommended that you do at least 5 days and 4 nights. This will give a much better Nile cruise experience and won’t feel as rushed with your  private Egyptologist guide .

On the other hand, depending on the type of traveller you are, you may want to make sure you don’t cruise for too long. While Nile cruises are a fantastic and relaxing way to sight-see in Egypt, some people can find them restricting. In this case, you probably won’t want to book a cruise that is one week or longer.

Where Do You Want to Start your Nile Cruise?

Nile cruises start in one of two destinations: Aswan or Luxor. There is no difference between the cruises depending on the start place; you will stop at the same sights and attractions along the way, however, there are a couple of things worth taking into consideration.

When it comes to things to do in Luxor, a lot of people want to do a hot air balloon ride over the Nile and the Valley of Kings. If this is on your list of things to do, you’ll have to plan your cruise around this activity. Since the hot air balloon rides happen at sunrise you will, normally, have enough time to do the balloon ride before your cruise starts. That being said, it is a very early morning start so you may not want to jump from the balloon ride right into sight-seeing which will be the case if you plan for both on the same day.

Alternatively, in Aswan, many people choose to do an early morning trip to Abu Simbel temple in southern Egypt which can be reached by either car or plane. Again, this is an early morning activity that can generally be timed to fit with the cruise, but that is something you will want to check with your tour provider.

Other considerations are; what direction are you going in and what day of week are you leaving on? If you are exploring the country with  Egypt tailor made tours , then they will have this discussion with you and plan your Nile cruise accordingly.

What Style of Nile Cruise are you Looking for?

There is a lot of variety when it comes to  Egyptian Nile cruises . The cheapest and most basic option is one of the felucca boats. While these may be traditionally charming, don’t expect much. You’ll sleep on the deck and, it is important to note, not all feluccas have toilets on board.

Chances are, that’s not quite what you had in mind for a Nile cruise, but there are plenty of cruises with private rooms and proper plumbing. Of course, these vary as well. Do you want a top of the line, luxury cruise with nightly entertainment and fine dining? Or, are you just looking for something comfortable with private rooms and normal inclusions? You’ll find several options to fit both of these styles of cruising.

What is your Budget for a Nile Cruise?

This point ties in closely with the section above. Obviously, the more basic the cruise the cheaper the price. Keep in mind though,  Egyptian cruises  aren’t necessarily on par with those that we are used to in North America. Not that there is anything wrong with that (and some companies and big brands are) however, it is something to keep in mind so you don’t end up too surprised.

Remember pricing also will affect your inclusions. Things you will want to look for are meals, drinks, air conditioning, and guides. In terms of guides, you’ll find options that include a group guide for a large number of people or a private guide for just you and your party. It is definitely worth your while to have a private guide for your  Egypt guided tours .

That being said, Egypt Nile River cruises can be very affordable. In fact, depending on the type of cruise you do, an Egyptian Nile cruise might actually end up costing you less than if you were to visit all these sites and travel by land. Either way, one of the best things about adding a Nile cruise to your itinerary is that there truly are options for all budgets.

The Best Nile Cruise Ship Companies

When looking at Nile cruise options it can be easy to get overwhelmed with all the options, especially when it comes to Nile cruise ship companies.

Once you have the type of cruise you are looking for and an ideal budget in mind, you can start comparing companies. There are dozens of options, however, to make things a little easier we’ve selected some of the top picks for your consideration.

High-End Ships

High-end ships for Nile cruises really are top of the line and ideal for those looking into  Luxury tours in Egypt . The cabins are a good size and often decorated in a modern but elegant design. Many of these ships feature award-winning chefs and additional facilities such as an onboard fitness room, rooftop swimming pool, or even an onboard spa. Additionally, professional Egyptologist guides for all attractions and sites along the way are included in the price of your luxury Egypt tour. These ships differ in size but tend to have somewhere between 30-50 cabins on board.

Some examples of the top high-end ships for a luxury Nile River cruise include:

  • The Sanctuary Sun Boat
  • Sonesta Star Goddess
  • Terramar Nile Cruise
  • Oberoi Zahra
  • Oberoi Philae

Good Quality but More Affordable Ships

The above-mentioned ships are stunning, but, may not fit your budget. That’s ok though because there are still several beautiful ships that will offer you an incredible Nile Cruise experience for a more affordable price.

These ships are still tastefully decorated but may not be up to quite the same standard as those that are considered high-end. Meals on board tend to be buffet style rather than a la carte, and while some include additional features such as spas, pools, or fitness centers, they aren’t quite as common. As with all other Nile cruise ships, professional Egyptologists are included to guide you through the temples and sites that you will visit along the way.

Some of this good quality but more affordable ship options include the following:

  • Movenpick Royal Lily
  • Movenpick Royal Lotus
  • Amwaj Living Stone

Whatever you decide on in terms of your cruising style, you can bet that an Egyptian Nile cruise truly will be the highlight of your  Egypt luxury vacation .

Pharaohs Nile Cruise Adventure - Return Flights Included

We joined the tour as three people, my friend and my sister. We were welcomed as soon as we landed in Egypt in the middle of the night. Ahmed welcomed us at our hotel and helped us with early check-in. A smooth transfer was made by plane to Luxor. Our guide Ahmed Saladino welcomed us in Luxor. We spent 5 days with our guide Saladino. It went perfectly for us. Saladino was very knowledgeable and helpful in every aspect. Our balloon tour money, which was canceled due to wind, was refunded without any problems. Our group was quite harmonious. Many thanks to our guide Saladino, who did his best for us, and to tourradar and beyond the nile for the smooth organization. As soon as we were picked up from the airport, we were sent off from the airport with a warm farewell. The points I will criticize are; The ship is tired of years and unfortunately full of old materials. Even though the staff is devoted, this ship should definitely be better.

Egypt is amazing, but best of all was Mo Fahrid as our guide. His skill at negotiating and managing all aspects of the tour was superb. Mo’s personal service made every day a delight. This was a dream of an experience.

Wow! What an experience. It was magical to see all the wonderful monuments and impressive rich history. Timeless tours made everything easy and the staff were wonderful. In particular, Summer was such a great guide. She was knowledgeable, ready to help, had a great personality and helped us understand not only Egyptian history but the culture both past and present. We also had the chance to meet Khaled on the Felucca ride and he was absolutely charming and an interesting person. We recommend doing the Felucca cruise if you’re looking for that authentic and adventurous experience. Also, DO NOT SKIP Abu Simbel. Absolutely stunning and worth the price! Thanks again to Summer, Khaled and professor Isam for the experience. Would do again!

I loved the tour. Our group got along wonderfully. Ramon was interesting guide and very knowledegable. My only suggestion is transparency with a lot more firmer details on schedules, pricing and options. Our option to the lighted pyramids was not made available to us. The trip to Abu Simbel, although was incredible; the time we had to get up to make that journey for the time it took to get there versus the time we spent there would have been better off doing something else or passing on it.

My trip to Egypt was, by far, the most impactful trip I've ever taken. I learned so much--not only about the country's amazing history, but also about the amazing people--and left a piece of my heart behind. This was my first group trip, and I could not have imagined 11 more wonderful people to spend my days and nights with. However, the trip exceeded my expectations due to our incredible tour guide, Mohamed Ebrahim. Mo was THE ABSOLUTE BEST. He was organized, informative, patient, creative, and I know I speak for our entire group when I say that I can't even imagine taking this trip with another guide.

Best of Egypt Tour

Best of Egypt

I joined the 8 days tour - Best of Egypt with G-adventure on 22 Dec 2019. I had great experience with my tour. We visited the Great Pyramid of Giza, the Egyptian Museum, then took local train to Aswan, where we visited Philae Temple and Abu Simble. We then sailed to Luxor and visited the Karnak Temple, the Valley of Kings, etc. Our fellow travellers are friendly. Our tour guide Saad Matta is very knowledgeable about Egyptian history. He explained to us about the background of various temples, tombs and arts. The tour was educational and enjoyable. I was very impressed by his rich knowledge about the ancient Egyptian history. In addition, he showed us around the local markets, gave us shopping advice. He was very helpful.

Excellent tour from start to finish, saw all we wanted to see. Our guide Mina Magda was excellent and very knowledgeable and well informed about everything, also very well presented. He was such a pleasant and positive person and this radiated to everyone on the tour. The hotels were mostly excellent but some had no drinking water in the rooms. Other than that they were fine. Strangely enough I really enjoyed the bus rides through the desert to Luxor and Hurghada, I love remote places. All in all my wife and I really enjoyed the tour and it was also a good time of year to go, not scorching hot.

Enchanting Egypt Tours - Internal Flights Included Tour

Enchanting Egypt Tours - Internal Flights Included

We were a group of 7 people from Switzerland and did the "Enchanting Egypt Tours - Internal Flights Included" with the organizer "Beyond The Nile Tours". Everything was very well organized and the guides did a very good job. We would especially like to praise Mahmoud Noby. He fulfilled all of our wishes, even on the last day, when the tour was already over, he organized a boat and taxi for us. Mahmoud - THANK YOU SO MUCH. In Cairo we stayed in the “Tulip Golden Plaza” hotel and on the Nile in the “Princess Sarah” cruise ship. Both accommodations were fine, clean and with good meals. We didn't eat salad on the trip for fear of diarrhea. At the end of the trip we learned that in the kitchen the food was only washed with water from "controlled bottles". So we could have easily eaten the salad. Nobody in our group had diarrhea, and we didn't meet anyone else with diarrhea either. For us the highlights were: the pyramids, hot air balloon flight and the Valley of the Kings. We were surprised that photography is now allowed in the Valley of the Kings. When we were there in 2017, it was still strictly forbidden. The hot air balloon flight must be booked in addition. It will remain an unforgettable experience for us and we would repeat it at any time. Although the war in Egypt is close, we felt safe at all times. We love Egypt and the Nile and hope to come back soon.

Kingdom of Egypt - 8 Days ( Cairo , Aswan - Nile Cruise - Luxor ) & Sleeper Train Round Trip Tour

Kingdom of Egypt - 8 Days ( Cairo , Aswan - Nile Cruise - Luxor ) & Sleeper Train Round Trip

This was a really fun trip for my family (2 kids ages 13 and 11). Our tour guides, especially “King Mina”, were very personable and knowledgeable. We learned so much about Egyptian history and I am inspired to learn more. There are several early mornings but it is well worth it. We had several hours cruising on the Nile one day which was a great chance to recuperate.

What people love about Nile Cruises from Cairo

A variety of experiences both day and night, cruise up the Nile was great, gravity resort was superb, pyramids awesome, lots of temples
One of the good journeys I've taken, it exposed us to a language and culture quite distinct from Western norms. We also witnessed remarkable ancient sites, including Karnak Temple and Abu Simbel, and enjoyed thrilling activities like a hot air balloon ride and snorkeling in the Red Sea.
We did this tour starting 6th April 2024. Overall it was really well organised and we had a fantastic experience of the ancient Egyptian history which we were after. Mahmoud is an excellent local guide and we felt safe and well looked after throughout the cruise and excursions. He was especially very good with kids. The communication from the tour operator was clear, responses were prompt and the website and apps are well designed. The hotel in Cairo, the cruise cabin and facilities were a bit dated and in need of repairs and upgrades, but that reflects in the price. We knew this from other reviews so there were no unwelcome surprises. We managed to do all the optional excursions and they were all well worth it and highly recommended.

The best mother-daughter trips tend to have a Goldilocks element to them: They’re not too romantic or too metropolitan; they don’t call for too many logistics—travel or otherwise—but they’re not boring; they’re not all-or-nothing: buzzy or sleepy, business or pleasure. But rather, they’re just like motherhood is: just right . The best mother-daughter jaunts blend a little bit of everything: great cities , historic museums, delicious food , and the best company.

From a cruise down the Nile to a long weekend in Savannah , Georgia, here are 15 mother-daughter trips for travelers of all interests, budgets, and ages. Some destinations are ones you may return to time and time again, while others are faraway dreams you'll be ecstatic to finally bring to life. 15 MotherDaughter Trip Ideas From Nile Cruises to Sedona Getaways

A historic vacation in Boston

Though the city has changed throughout the years (see the bustling Seaport area ), Boston—with its deep historic roots and dozens of colleges—always elicits nostalgia. Cruise the Public Garden’s swan boats , stroll the Charles River , or visit one of the many museums (like the private art collection at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum or the kid-friendly Museum of Science ). An outdoor adventure in Banff

Seeing the Rockies across the Canadian border is absolutely magical (just don't forget your passport). In Banff, where the altitude is only about half that of some of Colorado’s highest peaks, the mountains are truly stunning. Here, some of the hotels double as castles (and come with the expected luxuries), and art galleries, museums, and coffee shops dot the streets downtown. Ski slopes, hikes, and various outdoor adventures (with the views to match) are never far.

A trip to the spiritual oasis of Sedona

There are many reasons to venture to Sedona, just a two-hour desert drive from Phoenix, and each one is as good as the next: the spiritual sanctuaries of vortexes, the hikes (ranging from scenic to thrilling), the spas ( Mii Amo , with services like chakra balancing), the food ( Elote Cafe ), the nearby Grand Canyon, or the panoramas of Arizona’s red rocks. A perfect trip for mothers and adult daughters—activities and relaxation exist in spades; choose your own adventure.
