WHAT TO BRING ON YOUR ATV/UTV TOUR

Sunglasses are not required.  

However, if you do decide to wear them, they must be small in size because you will be wearing goggles. Depending on the time of year, you may want a jacket.  Also, This is a desert ATV/UTV tour, so you're going to get a little dusty, dirty & possibly wet!  So dress accordingly. You're going to see some amazing scenery on this desert ATV/UTV tour, and sometimes amazing wildlife, cell phone cameras are encouraged, but due to amount of dust,  leave your nice cameras at home.  A major credit card is needed to book a guided off-road tour, and must be present at start of the tour.

Anyone can go on our ATV/UTV tour, but we recommend being at least 3 years old. You must be 16 years old or older to drive on our UTV adventure tour. We operate using easy to drive fully automatic late model CAN-AM Maverick Trail 700/800 & 1000cc UTV'S. No shifting required. No experience driving an ATV or UTV..... No worries! We will train you!

WHO CAN GO ON OUR ATV/UTV DESERT TOUR

Where to go to meet your atv/utv tour guide.

Our ATV/UTV desert tours take place inside the Tonto National Forest, about 40 minute drive NE of Old Town Scottsdale Arizona.

Most participants drive out to the trailhead to meet the guide. It's very easy to get out there, and there is plenty of parking. 

If you need transportation contact us as soon as possible, and we may be able to arrange transportation for you. (Subject to availability) Cost varies based on number of people in your group.

The best option is to rent a car and drive to the trailhead on your own.  It is not difficult to find just follow directions from our Maps and Dire ctions page.

UBER & LYFT BE AWARE... Ride-share companies will take you out there, but they will not come out a nd pick you back up after the tour.  Thus, if you are using a ride share service, you will need to convince your driver to hang around or come back and pick you up, after the tour.

We recommend wearing close-toe shoes on our UTV tour. No alcohol is allowed before or during tour.  If you show up impaired you will not be allowed to drive on the tour.  

No Exceptions and No Refunds.  A valid credit card and a minimum of two people are needed to book a tour. Not recommended for individuals with back or neck problems.

Not recommended for pregnant women. We provide your helmet, ATV tour vehicle, fuel, bottled water, sunscreen, head sock, neck gator, and an experienced tour guide. There are no restrooms anywhere near our trails, so plan accordingly.

Desert Monsters operates using a 48 hour cancellation policy. In order to receive a full refund you must cancel prior to 48 hours of your tour start time.  

There are no refunds for cancellations within 48 hours of tour start time.  

There are no refunds for missed start times, showing up late and missing tour, or for going to wrong location. 

OTHER IMPORTANT ATV/UTV TOUR INFORMATION

A Beginner's Guide to Offroading near Phoenix

For men and women new to Arizona, new to off-roading (or both), here are some great 4WD trails to get you started. These should be considered introductory trails. All are easy to manage and all can be done solo, but it is always recommended to have at least one other vehicle with you. None are considered “Rock Crawling” trails, although the Backway to Crown King has optional obstacles which should not be attempted alone. These 4WD trails surround the Phoenix area but there are many other offerings throughout the state. Like golf courses, in Arizona, we have so many opportunities to explore! Let these introductory 4WD trails get you started.

Montana Mountain

Montana Mountain   is one of the best 4×4 trails within a close distance to the east valley. While the southwestern part of Montana Mountain is busy on the weekends, you will quickly escape to higher elevations and less traffic. Beautiful views can be had on the ascents and descents of this popular 4WD trail. During the early spring, wildflower season is an excellent time to visit Montana Mountain. When things heat up in Phoenix, it is also nice to escape the valley and gain some elevation for cooler temperatures. On a recent visit with a new Jeep owner, they couldn’t believe that such an amazingly scenic and easy trail was so close to the city. Montana Mountain is what it is all about! There are several offshoots/spur trails which can test your technical driving skills, if you choose to do so.

Apache Trail

While this can be done in a car at a slow pace, the   Apache Trail   has a lot of historical significance to the area and passes by three of the largest lakes in Arizona which support recreation and water for the Phoenix area. You can do an out and back trip or create a loop by returning via highway 87 to Fountain Hills, or via Globe and US-60. Consider this an all-day trip. Great views can be seen along the Apache Trail, as well as the steep descent/ascent on the switchbacks near Fish Creek.

Box Canyon , just southwest of Gold Canyon on the way to Florence, is a great introduction to a wide trail system which is available in the far southeast valley. A great many trails are present here, and vary from beginner to more technical “rock crawling” adventures. The actual Box Canyon is fairly short but many of these trails can be linked to create an all-day adventure. Box Canyon is best accessed from the east to then work your way towards the northwest. There are beautiful views within the canyon and then a slightly challenging climb up the waterfall ladder to exit the trail. If you don’t feel up to this, there is a bypass which provides nice elevations and scenic views. Never enter this area when it is actively raining because you cannot predict when flash-flooding may occur.

Backway to Crown King

The Backway to Crown King   is very busy on the weekends. Why? Because it is considered one of the classic off-road trails in the Phoenix area. If you want to challenge yourself with some technical sections, they can be had throughout the Backway to Crown King. Don’t feel like doing that? No problem—it is easy to bypass the technical sections. Once you make it to the top, you are rewarded with a visit to historic Crown King, Arizona. Stop in for a beverage or a meal before heading back down the mountain via the traditional road to I-17. If you are headed back to Phoenix, a stop in Black Canyon City for pie at the Rock Springs Cafe is a worthwhile stop. The Backway to Crown King is an all-day trail.

Bulldog Canyon

Permit Required!   Bulldog Canyon   is a great, short and scenic trail near Mesa, Arizona. You can obtain your permit for free online. There are a few different exit and entry points depending on where you want to start, in addition to some adjoining trails with higher technical ratings. Bulldog Canyon is a short trail and perfect for a quick half-day getaway. If you are lucky, you might even see some wild horses along the trail. Bulldog Canyon is near Saguaro Lake and Apache Junction.

This  AWESOME Adventure  combines the best of  both  Worlds.  You’ll get the  same great Half-Day Tomcar ATV Tour  that you love … with an  EXCITING  twist.  Your first stop will be at our desert shooting range where your Guide/Instructor will set up our  MACHINE GUNS  and give you a thrill of a lifetime!   [We take the same trails as our standard Tomcar ATV tour so you’re sure to get the full experience.]

Hop in the Tomcars and head out about 8 miles into the Sonoran Desert to our shooting range.  This  Adventure  offers participants the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to  shoot fully automatic machine guns  in the heart of the beautiful Sonoran Desert!  Enjoy instruction by our NRA Certified Instructors and Range Safety Officers!  When the firearms portion is completed, you will jump back in the Tomcars and continue on your Tomcar ATV Tour!  All of our fully-automatic rifles are manufactured by professionals at our subsidiary, Desert Wolf Tactical LLC, a federally licensed manufacturer right here in Arizona!

FINE PRINT: A minimum of 2 adult tickets must be purchased per reservation.  All vehicles are 4 seat vehicles.  Standard booking is 4 guests per vehicle.  If you have 2 empty seats, you may be combined with another group of 2 unless a Private Vehicle Upgrade is selected during the booking process ($99 upgrade per car of 2). NOTE: This upgrade will not be refunded due to the number of guests on the tour.  Use of the discount codes above must be accompanied by a valid corresponding ID at time of tour to maintain discount.  Guests under 18 years of age must wear a DOT Approved helmet, by federal law, which can be supplied by DWT.  Must be 16* years or older with a valid Driver’s License to operate a Tomcar.  (* Minor drivers, defined as 16 and 17 year olds, with a valid drivers license may operate the Tomcar with Parents Assumption of Financial Liability.  Call for details.)  We reserve the right to substitute firearms, whether in the standard package or additional packages, should a malfunction occur that cannot be fixed on the range.  While this situation is very rare and we do have backup firearms for each firearm type, they are mechanical devices and we are shooting in very dusty conditions.  Things can happen that are beyond our control.   Event may NOT be canceled within 7 (seven) days prior to scheduled adventure once booked, due to limited available space.  Safety is our number one concern, and any guest may be removed from the firearms portion of the activity for safety reasons at Instructor discretion.  No refund will be issued if a guest is removed.  All firearms built and maintained by Desert Wolf Tactical LLC in Anthem, Arizona.  Not all additional firearms are guaranteed available unless added to the reservation at a minimum of 24 hours prior to the event.  Anyone under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent/guardian.   All adventures are “rain or shine”.  Cancelations for weather are at the sole discretion of Desert Wolf.

Do you provide Hotel/Resort pickup? We do not offer guest transportation at this time because most guests prefer to arrange for their own transportation.  There are several good reasons for that.  Firstly, most of our guests want to enjoy a relaxing meal and beverage at the on-site RoadRunner Restaurant and Saloon before or after their tour.  For many, this “locals” hangout is part of the Arizona Experience.  In addition, many guests want to spend some time at the close-by Anthem Outlet Mall, the Pioneer Living History Museum, or charming Cave Creek, AZ.  When we provide transportation, you are not be able to enjoy these things because you will arrive right before your tour and depart right after your tour.  Secondly, there are many great transportation options in the Phoenix/Scottsdale area.  Most resorts have car rentals available right at the resort for a very reasonable price.  And, for those that don’t, rental car agencies are located all over the valley.  In addition to this, there are numerous transportation companies that will provide round trip transportation on your schedule, not ours.  And, quickly growing in popularity are taxi services such as Uber or Lyft.  Scottsdale/Phoenix visitors quickly find that they have lots of great transportation options that allow them to maximize their vacation fun.

What time do tours depart? Tour departure times vary throughout the year, depending on the tour you select.  Please check the booking calendar for the day your are interested in to see tour availability and departure times.  If you have already booked a tour, please check your confirmation email for the exact time that you need to arrive for your tour.  You won’t want to be late or you may very well miss the tour.

How long is the adventure tour? Most of our adventure tours last between 3 and 3.5 hours.

Where do we meet? We meet on the outside patio of the RoadRunner Restaurant and Saloon to get acquainted and sign waivers and agreements. 47801 N. Black Canyon Highway, Phoenix, AZ, 85087.  Please arrive at least 15 minutes before your tour departure time.

Are their restrictions for riders (age, etc.)? No. Our vehicles are very safe and we leave the minimum age to the discretion of the parents or guardians. We have had kids as young a 1 year old who enjoyed our tours. We just ask that the parents or guardians take care of their children on the tour so that all the guests have an enjoyable time. All riders under the age of 18 must wear a DOT-approved safety helmet which we provide.

How many seats in each Tomcar? Our fleet of Tomcar’s seat up to 4 passengers per car.

What should we wear? Our adventure tours are “rain or shine”, so we recommend that all of our guests dress accordingly. During the winter months, it can be very chilly in the morning or after the sun goes down. Please come prepared (hats, gloves, etc.). Tomcars are open-sided vehicles and we tour the most bio-diverse and largest desert in the United States (the Sonoran Desert). We go overboard to make sure that every guest is kept safe while on tour. But, it’s not a controlled environment. Expect the unexpected.  And, PLEASE check the local weather report for the day of your tour!

Should we bring a camera? Yes. The Sonoran Desert is a gorgeous place. You will encounter some breathtaking views and will probably want to capture these memories by taking pictures. Also, our guides are more than happy to take pictures with your camera upon request.

Should we bring water? We always bring along large coolers filled with plenty of ice and water. If you prefer your own non-alcoholic beverage, you are more than welcome to use our coolers.

Do we need a reservation in advance? Yes. All reservations must be made in advance.

What is your cancellation policy? Due to limited availability, we require a 7 days advance notice (prior to your scheduled departure) in order to receive a 100% refund for the ATV Tour & Machine Gun Adventure.

What happens if it rains? Our adventures depart “rain or shine”. Please dress for the weather and expect the time of your lives. Our guests are (mostly) sheltered from the rain in their Tomcars. You will probably get a little wet if it rains. But that’s part of the adventure right? The quality of our tours are never dampened by rain.

Are there restrooms on the tours? No. We recommend that guests use facilities located within the RoadRunner Saloon prior to departure.

How safe are the Tomcars? Tomcars were originally designed for Israeli Defense Forces. They weigh just under 1,800 pounds, boast independent front and rear suspension systems, and have a wide wheel base making them one of the safest off road vehicles in the World. And all of our Tomcars are equipped with a 4-point safety harness system.

Should we tip our Instructors? Our Instructors work very hard to make sure that everyone has an exceptional time and always appreciate the thoughtfulness of their guests.  Tip income goes a long way toward making Instructing and Guiding a viable career option.

Can pregnant woman take the tour? This is entirely up to the guest and the discretion of their doctor. However, if you are experiencing contractions, we think you’ll have a much different adventure waiting for you at the hospital. You can take a tour with us another time.  And, please remember, once the tour goes out, there is no way to get back other than come back with the tour.

Will there be other people in my vehicle? We are a group guided adventure that takes a convoy of vehicles out into the desert. Most of our Tomcars are 4 seaters. Groups of 3 or 4 will have their own private car. Depending on the mix of guests that we have for your scheduled tour time, a group of 2 may or may not have another group of 2 in their car. That said, all guests will have plenty of time to drive if they choose and are sure to have a spectacular time.   Are you a group of 2 that would like to reserve your own private car?   We have you covered. You may reserve your own private vehicle at the time of booking for a nominal upgrade fee.

Do you require safety helmets? Federal regulations now require that anyone under the age of 18 where a DOT-approved safety helmet, and we will provide these.

How far are you from Phoenix? Scottsdale? Our Desert Adventure departure locations are in North Phoenix and are about 30 to 40 minutes from both downtown Phoenix and Scottsdale.  [Please check your Confirmation Email for the exact departures location of your Adventure.]
