I booked with Van's team for our post-wedding wine tour with out-of-town guests, and I did not regret it! They are SUPER responsive and make the whole process so easy. Their pricing is also truly unbeatable! For a 9 hour day, including Jenna's concierge services and gratuity, the cost was just shy of $1300. Of course, the tastings at each winery were in addition to this, but just the fact that we had someone to plan our day, keep us on schedule, and DD us back to San Francisco was well worth the money! It was also so nice to have Jenna to follow-up on changes in party size and refunds. It was definitely a load off my back, especially after I had just planned and executed a wedding (whew). Me, my husband, and our friends who came along for the trip really enjoyed our day! It was perfect. Shout out to our driver, Nancy, who was so friendly and helpful day of!

Thank you so much for your kind words!!

We used Old Vine Wine Tours for my bachelorette party when we spent the day in Napa and couldn't have had a better experience! From initial communication up until the end of our experience Van was incredibly responsive, helpful, and reliable. The day before he even texted me a weather update and connected me to our driver for the day, Nancy. We had a few changes in # of passengers and they were able to accommodate us in a super spacious and nice SUV. We were able to be picked up and dropped back off to where we are staying in the East Bay (around 1.5 hours from Napa) which was amazing and something other transportation companies were not allowing. Nancy was an amazing driver and a pleasure to spend the day with. She knew a lot about the area, took pictures for us and even recommended an extra stop. Overall, I could not recommend Old Vine Wine Tours enough - thank you so much for an amazing day!!

We booked 2 days with Old Vine Wine Tours for a couple's trip to Sonoma. Highly recommend Van and his team! Great pricing and enjoyable way to get around the area without having to worry about a thing.

Thank you so very much!

The entire experience working with Old Vine Wine Tours was an absolute pleasure. Van was incredibly responsive and detail oriented when I initially reached out to schedule our trip to Sonoma + Napa. He provided me with an easy to fill out form, specific details on the vehicle options to accommodate our party, and was super responsive via email, text, and phone as we were booking somewhat last minute! We then worked with Jenna as our "Wine concierge" who took all of the planning off of our plate. With quick correspondence she reviewed our preferences and worked directly with the wineries to go ahead and plan our entire day. I couldn't more highly recommend the level of service, professionalism, and knowledgeable experience Van, Jenna, and team brought to us. Looking forward to our next trip with Old Wine Tours, thank you Van and Jenna!

We can't say enough about OVWT... My wife and I decided to visit Sonoma at the last minute and called them the night before we wanted to go wine tasting. We talked to Van who assured us that they would set everything up, no problem. And they delivered beyond anything we could have expected! Private wine tastings at some of the nicest wineries we've ever visited, and just an incredible and satisfying day. Thank you Van, who ended up being our driver and a wonderful person, and Jenna, who was the one who set everything up for us at the last minute. A trip to Sonoma cannot be complete without the services of OVWT and their team. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

Napa Wineries with the Best Views

California has some of the most varied landscapes of any state in the US. From snow-capped peaks to white-sand beaches, and lush coniferous rainforests to arid desert expanses, The Golden State has something for everyone – especially wine lovers.

Grape tourists looking to feast their eyes while they sip their favorite beverage will find themselves immersed in painterly beauty, whatever California winery they choose to visit. But for those seeking a truly iconic experience, the Napa Valley offers a taste of the state’s finest – wine and vistas alike.

What’s to love about the Napa landscape

old vine wine tours napa

Heading out of these picturesque communities, visitors to the region will quickly find themselves entering the vineyards, where grapes ripen uncovered in the California sun.

The valley is surrounded by rolling hills, some of which play host to more grapes happy to grow at a slightly higher elevation. If the hills aren’t covered in grapevines, visitors may view craggy rocks emerging from seas of wild golden grass, or young forests of Live Oak and Coastal Redwood.

Visitors to the Eastern side of the valley may enjoy Lake Berryessa, the biggest body of water in Napa County, and popular spot for boating, fishing, hiking, and swimming in the warmer months.

The Napa landscape has a lot to offer, and the best part is, there’s wine everywhere! Wherever you go in the Napa Valley, you’re in for a treat.

7 Napa Wineries with the Best Views

There are more than 400 wineries and 90 in-town tasting rooms in the Napa Valley – that’s 1 wine experience every 1.5 square miles across the county. You really can’t go wrong in California’s iconic viticultural valley, but if you want a view with your tasting flight, here are 6 Napa wineries to see.

  • Chappellet – St. Helena This winery is a little out of the way, but if you’re willing to walk the roads less traveled to get to it, you’re in for a treat. From the top of Pritchard Hill, wine lovers can watch the sun setting over the vineyards, sinking between distant mountains that shield the valley from Pacific winds. At the foot of the hill lies Lake Hennessey, stretching away towards the coast in a beautiful crescent. Watered by the lake, the surrounding hills are a lively green in the late winter and early spring – visitors in April and May will also enjoy the winery’s local wildflowers which offer a colorful frame to the scenery.

Thirsty for more?

Of course, if you don’t like the sound of these, there are 394 more Napa Valley wineries to choose from! Or, if you’re still planning your trip, give yourself a little taste of things to come with Napa wines from Old Vine Wine Tours.

6 Best Winery Tours in Napa Valley

  • by DEVIN PARR

Hess Persson Estates

Photo Courtesy of Hess Persson Estates

Going wine tasting is often so much more than sipping through a flight of wines. It’s about experiencing Wine Country in all of its glory and hearing the stories that make a region like Napa Valley so special. While we all love to belly up to the tasting bar at a winery, there’s something to be said for taking some time to learn about the history, property, and vineyards of the place that’s producing the wines in our glass. A well-executed winery tour before a wine tasting makes the wines in our glass that much more enjoyable.

Napa Valley is known for its gorgeous vineyards, stunning wineries, and, of course, exceptional wines. It’s hard to go wrong when wine tasting in this world-famous region just outside of San Francisco. However, some Napa wineries go above and beyond to bring to life the setting in which the wines are produced, so we’ve rounded up a few of our favorite wine tours in Napa Valley.

Walk Amongst The Vines

Cuvaison

Pine Ridge Vineyards

5901 Silverado Trail, Napa, CA 94558, (800) 575-9777

Nestled in the heart of Napa Valley’s Stags Leap district, Pine Ridge sits beneath – you guessed it – a ridge of pines offering views of the palisades and dramatic terroir responsible for producing top-notch Cabernet Sauvignon from the winery’s estate vineyards in the best appellations throughout the region, including Howell Mountain, Oakville, Rutherford, and Carneros. Pine Ridge also produces the unusual and much-loved Chenin Blanc + Viognier white blend sourced from grapes grown in the Sacramento Delta region of Clarksburg.

Deeply committed to sustainability, it’s no surprise that Pine Ridge has introduced an earth-centric Morning Hike Series to their wine tour experiences. Available during summer and harvest seasons, small groups are guided on a near-mile-long hike through the hillside vineyards, learning about Pine Ridge Vineyards’ sustainable farming techniques and diverse ecosystems. This grape-to-glass experience begins with some trail treats, as well as tastes of their Stags Leap District wines along with wines from other appellations. The hike finishes with a box lunch in their demonstration vineyard.

A Glimpse of Napa History

Charles Krug

Charles Krug

2800 Main Street, St. Helena, CA 94574, (707) 967-2229

A visit to Napa Valley Wine Country wouldn’t be complete without a stop at the winery that started it all back in 1861. As the oldest winery in Napa, and the longest-running tasting room in California, Charles Krug offers a glimpse into the history of this world-famous wine region. Purchased in 1943 by Italian immigrants Cesare and Rosa Mondavi, the iconic property remains family-owned today, producing elegant wines that uniquely express each estate vineyard in the family’s portfolio.

Guests will feel like family on the Charles Krug Tour and Tasting Experience as they explore the grounds of the winery, learning about two legendary pioneers of Napa Valley winemaking – Charles Krug and the Mondavi Family – and seeing the original home where Robert and Peter Mondavi, Sr. grew up.

Beauty Above & Below Ground

Quintessa

1601 Silverado Trail S, St. Helena, CA 94574, (707) 286-2730

Long considered one of the most iconic wineries in Napa Valley, this 280-acre property, founded by Agustin and Valeria Huneeus, sits in the heart of Rutherford, at the foot of the Vaca Mountain range. Using organic farming practices, the winery produces stunning wines from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Carménère, all of which go into their flagship bottling in different proportions depending on the vintage.

Exclusivity is the vibe at Quintessa . The 90-minute Private Estate Experience offers a tour through the natural surroundings of Quintessa while learning about their holistic philosophy around organic farming practices. Following your tour, you will taste a flight of current and library vintages. For an even more elevated winery tour, opt for the Quintessential Experience that begins with a tour of the estate and culminates with a seated wine tasting in a private, open-air glass hilltop pavilion.

Behind-the-Scenes in Calistoga

Davis Estates

Davis Estates

4060 Silverado Trail N, Calistoga, CA 94515, (707) 942-0700

This family owned and operated Napa Valley winery sits in the heart of Calistoga, with vines also planted in Rutherford, Carneros, and Howell Mountain. Seeing the immense potential of the site, the Davis family purchased the century-old estate winery in 2011 and embarked on an ambitious restoration journey to turn it into the remarkable property it is today.

The VIP Experience is well worth the splurge. Dedicated wine enthusiasts will be wowed by this behind-the-scenes tour as they stroll through the vineyards and experience the awe-inspiring 11,000-square-foot cave system. The tasting lineup includes sips of highly coveted reserve wines as well as the exclusive Phase V wines by Philippe Melka, each paired with a selection of seasonal delicacies created by Executive Chef Mark Caldwell.

Wine Tasting Itineraries

Zin Heritage

Use this route in the Trip Planner

A Zinfandel tasting guide to Napa Valley.

Tucked into the northern reaches of Napa Valley are some of the stately, gnarled, old-vine Zinfandel vineyards that give expression to this versatile variety’s chameleon-like expressions based on particular terroirs and winemaking intents.

Storybook Mountain Vineyards

Starting at the top of the Calistoga nested appellation is Storybook Mountain Vineyards. With its eastern-facing vineyards flowing down the Mayacamas Range, Storybook Mountain produces intense and elegant Zins, in part due to its volcanic soils for which the area is known as well as cooling ocean breezes coming through the Chalk Hill Gap

Guests are usually met by a member of the Seps family, given a tour of the vineyard, taken into the caves (dug by hand in the 1880s) and then seated in a redwood grove for a tasting of Zinfandels. Tours are usually limited to 10 people, to provide each guest an opportunity to ask questions.

As you head south, treat yourself to some authentic, Louisiana-style BBQ at Buster’s BBQ, a Calistoga favorite.

Canard Vineyard

Moving into the heart of the Calistoga nested appellation lies Canard Vineyard. Made exclusively from ancestral 135-year-old vines, Canard Vineyard’s Reserve Zinfandel showcases what can be done with this varietal when treated with the utmost respect. These century-old vines do not yield much, but what they do produce makes for an extraordinary wine.

The Estate Tasting includes a walking tour of the vineyards with one of Canard Vineyard’s owners, winemaker or general manager (ask them how phone calls from Robert Mondavi and Joseph Phelps helped save their heritage Zinfandel vineyards) and a private tasting of five estate wines, accompanied by cheese and charcuterie.

Close-by and nestled in the foothills of the Palisade Mountain lies Venge Vineyards. Their Zinfandel vineyard is a testament to the historical significance of Heritage Zinfandel vines that were once planted prolifically throughout California. Planted in the early 1900s, the old vines on this property are dry-farmed and head trained in the old-school style, producing just under one-ton to the acre.

Tastings are privately hosted on the deck of the Ranch House, pastorally overlooking vineyards. This rustic, yet cozy setting makes guests feel at home while they explore a wide range of artisan wines

Frank Family Vineyards

Continuing a bit further south into Napa Valley you’ll find yourself at Frank Family Vineyards, which sources its Zinfandel fruit from grower Phil Sunseri, fourth- generation grape grower, whose great-grandfather first began farming grapes in 1884 and planted Zinfandel in the Napa Valley nested appellation now known a Chiles Valley. With its cooling fog and summer heat, Chiles Valley is one of Napa Valley’s special places to grow Zinfandel grapes.

Guests to Frank Family Vineyard can enjoy tastings in the property’s historic Craftsman House, or outside in the courtyard or back patio. Not-to-be missed: a deep ruby dessert wine made form Zinfandel.

The 5 Oldest Wineries in the Napa Valley

July 17, 2019 | Travel Trips

You’d be hard pressed to find a wine lover in the world who is not familiar with the Napa Valley or who’s dreamed of enjoying a Napa Valley wine tour . Widely considered the United States’ premier wine region, it is also one of the most historic. While each year more wineries open their doors to wine cruises and the wine-loving public, there are also a number that have stood the test of time and are still running today.

A Brief History of Wine-Making in The Napa Valley

The history of winemaking in Napa Valley can be traced right back to the 18th century, when the first grapes were planted in California by the Spanish. It wouldn’t be until about one hundred years later that they were plated in the Napa Valley, and began to be cultivated in a way we’d recognize today. By the end of the 19th century, the wine industry in Napa Valley was flourishing with almost 150 wineries.

Unfortunately, the industry would soon be hit by a double-whammy that spelled the end for many wineries. In 1910, the dreaded phylloxera virus spread through the valley, killing off more than 90% of the vines. Then in the 1920s, the Prohibition era kicked in, nearly bringing an end to Napa Valley all together.

Luckily, a handful of wineries managed to survive these tumultuous events and come out on the other side. Others were nurtured back to their former glory by passionate winemakers who saw the region’s potential. They formed the foundation for the new and rejuvenated Napa Valley, which is today one of the world’s premier wine regions.

The 5 oldest wineries in the Napa Valley

With more than 300 wineries nowadays, there’s plenty to choose from – but these old and historic ones are still amongst the most loved.

Charles Krug

It makes sense to start with the oldest Napa Valley winery, the ever-popular Charles Krug. The vines were first planted in 1861, and the winery became the first to open its tasting room to the general public way back in 1882. So, anyone enjoying some amazing cellar door tastings in the Napa Valley can thank Charles Krug.

Not content to rest on its historic past, Charles Krug continues to be an innovative and dynamic producer of quality wines. Their tasting experience is also one of the most iconic in the region and is a much-loved stop during Napa Valley wine tours. As well as the wine tasting experience, they also offer scrumptious wood-fired pizzas to accompany your favorite vino.

Beringer Vineyards

One of the few wineries in the Napa Valley that managed to trade all through the early 1900s, Beringer Vineyards is in fact California’s longest continually-operating vineyard. The history of this winery can be traced back to 1875, when the grapes were planted by by the Beringer brothers. The brothers emigrated from Germany, bringing with them their knowledge of wine-making.

Ever since, the winery has been producing top-quality wines and offering a unique and charming experience to visitors. While the Beringer brothers eventually sold the winery, one of their descendants is still at the helm, making wine the Beringer way. As well as the wine, another highlight is taking a tour through the vineyard’s hand-dug tunnels.

The scourge of phylloxera means that only a handful of Napa Valley wineries enjoy vines that are pre-1900. Inglenook winery is one of these, boasting a small section of old vines that are still used in their wine today. A single varietal from these vines, like the 2014 Rubicon, is particularly sought after.

The history of Inglenook dates back from 1879 when a Finnish immigrant purchased the land and planted the vines. It has since changed hands, most famously finding itself under the ownership of the actor Francis Ford Coppola in 1975. It’s been on the up ever since, and consistently produces some of the best wines in the Napa Valley.

While Charles Krug may be the oldest winery in the Napa Valley, Hendry actually boasts slightly older vines. They were planted in 1859, pipping Krug at the post by just two years. Although it was at the forefront of the burgeoning Napa Valley wine industry, the winery was out of action for nearly half a century between the 1880s and 1930s.

In 1939, the winery was given a new lease on life when it was purchased by married couple Margaret Munn and George W. Hendry. Their plans to revive the winery were almost scuttered when George sadly passed away just five years after it was purchased – however, Margaret’s resilience saw her steer the winery through this difficult time and back to its former glory. Since then, it’s gone from strength to strength, producing exceptional wine, including some unusual varietals.

Schramsberg Wines

The story of Schramsberg Wines is one that is common throughout the Napa Valley. Its beginnings are traced back to 1861, when a German immigrant decided to plant a selection of grapes. Things went well, and the winery grew, boasting over 30,000 vines and the region’s first hillside cave, which was used to store and age wine.

Unfortunately, Schramsberg Wines, too, fell into disrepair during the bad luck of the early 1900s. It was largely “down and out” when an optimistic pair saw its potential and purchased the estate in 1965. Their belief in the vineyard paid off, and they nurtured the winery back to its former glory.

In particular, Schramsberg is known for its exceptional sparkling – perfect for raising a toast to the historic region.

From July 14-25, 2020, Schramsberg and Davies Vineyards will be venturing to Northern Europe on a wine cruise. Starting in Sweden, the cruise will dock in Estonia, Finland, Russia, Poland, Denmark, and England. The one-of-a-kind experience will be filled with wine receptions, dinners, events, and seminars on board. Contact us to reserve your spot now before it’s sold out!

The 7 Best Red Wines From Napa Valley’s Oakville AVA

Named for forests of towering oaks that have mostly been replaced by vineyards, Napa Valley’s Oakville—both a town and an AVA—is home to some of the world’s finest Cabernet Sauvignon . One of its most high-profile vineyards is To Kalon , which means “the highest beauty” in Greek. Originally owned and planted by Napa pioneer H.W. Crabb, it is now farmed by a variety of owners including Robert Mondavi winery’s parent company Constellation Brands, University of California Davis, and Beckstoffer Vineyards, which sells its prized fruit to several wineries. Producing some of the most coveted Cabernet Sauvignon in the world, Oakville has come a long way since its origins as a water stop for steam trains in the 1860s.

Two miles wide, Oakville was granted American Viticultural Area status in 1993. More than 70 vintners and growers cultivate grapes on its 5,000 acres of vines, which produce some of the foremost Cabernet Sauvignon and red blends in existence. California’s first “vineyard designate” wine, Heitz Cellars 1966 Martha’s Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, is from Oakville, and the first perfect score for a wine from California was awarded to another product of Oakville, Groth Vineyards & Winery 1985 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve.

Elevations rise to 1,000 feet in the Vaca Range on the east side of the AVA, where grapes receive sun late in the day, while afternoon shade is one of the benefits to vineyards planted in the Mayacamas Mountains on the west side, which ascend to a less extreme 500 feet. Meanwhile, at the flat center of the region, valley floor fruit is the recipient of generous sunlight and a steady cycle of morning fog and cool breezes from San Pablo Bay and constant flow of warmer air from San Joaquin Valley to the east. A vast array of flavor and tannin profiles for the Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc grown here is derived from widely differing soils including alluvial, sedimentary, and volcanic. Here are some of the finest wines from Napa Valley’s true center, Oakville.

The Debate 2018 Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard Cabernet Franc Oakville Napa Valley California

old vine wine tours napa

Wine lovers and collectors know the famous Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard on Oakville’s valley floor. Each year the Debate team makes a pair of standout wines, but we decided to highlight their excellent 2018 Cabernet Franc because of the ethereal bouquet of aromas of crushed violet petals, lavender, cedar, and tobacco leaf. Made from 100 percent Cabernet Franc it is aged for almost two years in 80 percent new French oak. It’s inky purple in the glass and is smooth on entry into the mid palate with flavors of black licorice, blueberry, candied cherry, and mocha. The tannins are fine and silky, and the finish goes on and on. Drink now through 2038.

Their Rancho Pequeño Cab comes from a very small vineyard (hence the name) and is deep purple colored in the glass. To Kalon Vineyard was originally planted in 1868 and when Robert Mondavi chose it as the site for his new winery in 1966 it was already known to be one of the best vineyards in California.  The 2019 harvest was long and leisurely, giving the winemaking team plenty of time to let the grapes hang and mature. After fermentation the wine was aged for 21 months in 100 percent new French oak barrels. It is a blend of 97.5 percent Cabernet Sauvignon with 2.5 percent Petit Verdot which contributes to its ink-like hue. It has aromas of black raspberry, brown baking spice, and a touch of lifted mint with flavors of black tea, dark chocolate, and cassis. Drink now through 2039.

Owner Mike Davis grew up in San Mateo County but spent his summer vacations at Napa Valley Ranch Club and developed a deep love for the Valley. In 2011 he and his family purchased a 100-year-old estate and created the winery of his dreams. Davis Estates 2018 Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon is barrel aged for 22 months in 60 percent new French oak. It has aromas of black plum, dark cocoa, and brown baking spices. It is juicy on the palate with well-structured tannins and flavors of blueberry, toasted almonds, cherry pipe tobacco, with a persistence of dark chocolate in the long-lasting finish.
