No matter how put-together someone might seem, take her halfway across the world, away from all her creature comforts and familiar surroundings, and you'll find out how she really behaves, completely out of her element.

5 Things Olivia Palermo Is Loving Right Now

Published on 5/11/2022 at 6:30 PM

olivia palermo travel

Olivia Palermo is doing it all — right now. From running Olivia Palermo Beauty (which just celebrated its one-year anniversary) to continuing her success as a style icon, the star is pretty much always on the go. She recently partnered with LG Signature — a collaboration that makes perfect sense for Palermo, as the brand is focusing on elevating appliances through design.

We recently got the chance to speak with Palermo during an LG Signature event in Napa Valley, where we caught up with the tastemaker on what she's loving right now. From the perfect luxury suitcase to an affordable Zara set she was wearing that evening, she gave us all the details on what (and where) we should be shopping. Keep reading to learn about Palermo's everyday essentials.

Palermo's Travel Essentials

"When it comes travel, I have a very specific system. I always carry my wheeled Rimowa ($1,360). I have my jewelry, makeup, an extra pair of clothes, and then a cashmere set from the plane. And then I'll have my handbag with my passport — I like bags within bags. So everything's very organized."

The Skin-Care Staples You Need to Try From Olivia Palermo Beauty

"100 percent, the skin care is amazing. The serum and the mist are both incredible. I have tried everything out on both my guys and girls, so everybody approves. So I was like, OK, high marks, I'm happy. The lipstick's also a favorite of mine, and it feels like something luxurious you can just store in your purse."

We suggest getting the Olivia Palermo Skincare Essentials Deluxe Set ($79) so you can try all of her favorites.

The Appliances Palermo Uses in Her Home

"I've been really fortunate to be working with LG for a few years now, and I think we both have a very similar approach. In my lifestyle, when I approach fashion, and even in my home, I try to look for craftsmanship, quality, and design — and LG really hits all those things. I love the LG Signature wine cellar ($6,999); it's one of my absolute favorites. We also have the OLED television synced up . . . it's really nice that the brand has thought about the design, and the picture is amazing. So it really blends into a home. I love that."

Palermo's Hosting Must Haves

"When I'm hosting a dinner party back at home in NYC, I get Butterfield Market — that's an absolute must. I always get my florals from Plaza Flowers , and then I do all different decorations throughout the table, depending on what I'm feeling."

Shop Palermo's Affordable Zara Set

When Palermo told us that her stunning poppy-orange set is from Zara, we were super excited that the chic look could easily be ordered and re-created. Make sure to get your hands on the Zara Textured Pocket Vest ($90) and Zara Textured Weave Pants ($60) before they sell out.

Olivia Palermo Is About to Become Your New Favorite Designer

After years of anticipation, the style icon is launching her Olivia Palermo Collection on Feb. 13.

olivia palermo travel

Olivia Palermo is a master of reinvention.

Since first entering the spotlight in the early 2000s, the 33-year-old has gone from socialite, to reality star, to full-fledged influencer. She's had her own lifestyle site — the recently redesigned OliviaPalermo.com — for years, and industry insiders will likely vouch for her top-notch public relations skills, which she puts on display whenever she collaborates with a brand. (It'll be her telling you all about the pieces and the process, not someone she hired.)

Still, even as Palermo continues to expand her ever-growing résumé, something about her has always remained consistent: her style. She's a pro at putting together an enviable outfit, keeping up with the latest trends, and showing us how to wear items in ways we hadn't thought of before.

That's probably why her latest gig makes so much sense, and is something that fans have been waiting for. On Feb. 13, Palermo will release her very own line, Olivia Palermo Collection, turning her number one title into founder and designer.

"It's something I have always thought to do," she told InStyle prior to the launch. "It was just a matter of when timing was right. I think after 10 years, working on enough collaborations, my brand is changing and going into the next phase."

That next phase includes a Spring 2020 drop, which contains 53 pieces, from structured shirts to shorts. The colors are vibrant, the prints are bold, and the overall vibe is classic and feminine. Palermo said she planned this season's pieces alongside pre-Fall and Fall, in order to set the tone for what her brand would become.

"I think Spring was a great start, and you really see it more in pre-fall," she said, adding that Fall 2020 is when things get particularly dreamy. "We're very big on overcoats because it's something I love very much. Lots of mixing and matching, lots of tailoring."

Of course, Palermo didn't just tell us what to expect — she showed us, too. She posed for an InStyle photoshoot at a spacious Greenwich Village apartment, where she styled her own creations with other designer clothing, proving how versatile everything truly is.

"I'm very excited about how you can break it up and wear it with any collection. It's about mixing and matching in one's wardrobe, and there's really something for everyone."

What's particularly cool is that, with all of Palermo's experience in the fashion world, she's made some well-known, talented friends, which have given her their stamp of approval. Giambattista Valli "has been super supportive," she said, adding that Andrea Incontri, the former creative director at Tod's menswear, was impressed with all the "little details" — something, Palermo assured us, he's particular about.

Despite these esteemed reviews, the true marker for success will be one that's the same for many designers.

"Just seeing people wear the clothes," she said. "Even now, I'm so thrilled when I see pieces from my previous collaborations with other brands, like Banana Republic and Karl Lagerfeld, on the street. I think watching how stylish women around the world put my designs together will be so rewarding."

The Olivia Palermo Collection ranges from $275 to $1,595 and will be available to shop on OliviaPalermo.com on Feb. 13. It will also be available at Saks Fifth Avenue and specialty retailers in the coming weeks.

Keeping Pace with Olivia Palermo, Fashion’s Favorite Face

Fresh off the launch of a new luxury beauty brand, the stylista has found her footing in the big leagues..

olivia palermo

It should come as no surprise that Olivia Palermo is an in-person person. The model, designer, entrepreneur, and famed fashion girl likes to shop in-person, peruse collections in-person, network in-person. It's a preference that has elevated her to muse-status for needle-moving designers around the world, and greatly contributed to Palermo's decade—and then some—of high visibility. After all, you don't become one of the most famous faces in fashion by not showing up.

Today, Olivia Palermo is in Paris, in the grips of fashion month mania. Palermo's schedule straddles market appointments, meetings, front-row appearances, and basking in the warm post-pandemic glow. This season, it's possible Palermo has felt the heat more than any other. In May, she launched her eponymous luxury beauty brand , which offers a range of luxury cosmetics and skin-care essentials.

From across the Atlantic, Palermo speaks at a pace that would prompt any transcription service to spontaneously combust. While one can easily imagine her designer heels keeping similar time across the cobbled streets, she's never out of breath (fitness, another convenient byproduct of reaching fashion elite). We're on Olivia Palermo's time now—if you can't keep up, she'll leave you behind.

Read on for Olivia Palermo's journey from magazine intern to cover star, and why consistency—as well as commitment—is key.

It feels like you've touched all facets of the fashion industry, how did you envision your career when you started? What would you say really set you up?

"It's interesting when you start out with a direction and then you have to move with the times and what the market is saying but also what the consumer is saying. I say this to anyone who goes into fashion, you really need to have a solid foundation and knowledge. Being a wardrobe assistant at a magazine is probably one of your best experiences, you really understand samples. Some stylists have that background and the ones who do make it a lot easier on productions. I was just having a conversation about this, so it's at the top of my mind. But being able to understand brands, collections, what gets shot and what doesn't, evolves—whether I was going to become an editor, in PR, whatever your course, you have a solid foundation. So for me, starting off as an intern at Quest magazine gave me that base.

"I still love the magazine world, and seeing what's actually on those pages. The information is very different from digital—when it's all about clickbait you lose a lot of substance. When a publication is doing well and taking care of their journalists, it's a different kind of content."

Did you predict the demise of print, amid blog culture's takeover?

"I'm not the biggest tech person, but I'm knowledgeable about what goes on from a digital marketing perspective and unfortunately in this day-and-age people's attention span is so short. People have limited time, and they want quick content and a clear message. I'm hoping that will change, because there's so much great [long-form content] out there to consume."

What's your take on digital shows?

"I think there's a twofold to it all. They were a response to the times, but ultimately, we need to be in-person to see the collection, have the conversation with the designer, and experience the show. I will do digital when it comes to going through a lookbook, but I'm all for in-person. You can put a band-aid on that for a minute because we were in a pandemic and forced to think outside the box. Now I'm 100 percent about in-person."

How did the pandemic affect you, personally and professionally?

"I think everyone was forced to stop and reassess, and if you didn't you're lying or going nowhere in life, because everyone took a breath. It's important to have time for yourself and reset. For me and Olivia Palermo as a brand I had to stop, the climate had changed. We had been working on beauty for a year and a half and we had to put a pin in everything. We weren't ready because the world wasn't ready, and I didn't want to rush to put something out and be insensitive—that's not what I'm for."

Well it's interesting because you do have an enormous amount of influence, but you've also earned this immense fashion credibility. Is it ever frustrating to see the younger set kind of achieve that overnight?

"That's such an interesting question. I was fortunate to be in a really interesting space to create that niche in the market, pre-blogs and Instagram. Now it's nice to see there's a huge market for it and people want to build their personal brands, but for me now I'm focusing on creating this trust with my consumer and an incredible product. There really is space for everyone in different fields, and to think that I could offer others tools to do that [is so rewarding]."

Did you have to fight to be taken seriously in those early days?

"I was really fortunate because I had an incredible support system, and I had such respect for my peers. But 'making it' has never crossed my mind, I keep my head down and do my work and learn, then take that knowledge on to the next project."

What about the industry still gets you really excited?

"Oh, I'll tell you. An amazing market appointment with a great designer, that's one of my favorite things to do."

Are there any rising or established designers that you consider to really be moving the needle?

"Andre Incontri who was the creative director of Tod's has now started his own accessories line. Giambattista Valli, I watched him evolve and grow, and he was the youngest designer to join couture. These two fabulous men in my life keep me fabulously dressed."

How did you formulate your taste?

"Traveling all around the world and going to all the different markets—street style as much as what the designers are showing, that all helps me to do my job a little bit better."

I'm interested in your thoughts on the phenomenon of collaborations between luxury houses:

"I think it shows how small the industry really is—we're a supportive industry, we want to champion each other. There are trends and moments when you want to try new things and I think this is one of them. I'm looking forward to what we're going to see after Corona, I feel like there's a lot of opportunity."

What gap did you want to fill with Olivia Palermo beauty?

"We were ready to cater to luxury beauty, taking the compact or lipstick and giving it a weight that makes it feel like an investment. It's putting your money into a brand where the exterior and interior are equally matched, as well as to look at them from a fashion lens. My glam fam, as I call them, come from all over the world and I've worked with them for years, so I would be doing myself a disservice by not learning from them and including their insight in this project — whether that was textures of the eyeshadows or how they sat on different skin tones, formulations on everything. But also that you could have something, both guys and girls, that could sit on your beauty counter and make you feel fabulous."

How do you shop now?

"Only in-person. I am an in-person person. I only shop brick-and-mortar, I love being in stores. It's important for my brand to meet the store girls and see what they're excited about in fashion, their relationships with customers. But brick-and-mortar is about to be booming, everyone is ready to get out of their houses. Now is a great time to get retail space on the cheap and really do something with it."

It seems like you're always two steps ahead in terms of what's current, and what's next. Do you ever stop?

"I can never stop. My husband is very patient with me. It keeps the adrenaline going and sparks other ideas, conversations you have with someone can be turned into something amazing. So you always have to keep the door open and an open mind."

Go Inside Olivia Palermo's Glam Night at the 2023 Venice Film Festival (Exclusive)

The star shares her behind-the-scenes prep ahead of her appearance at the 'Finalmente L'Alba' premiere during the 2023 Venice Film Festival

Olivia Palermo knows how to make an entrance — and for her trip to the Finalmente L'Alba premiere at the Venice Film Festival, she took PEOPLE inside the prep behind that unforgettable moment.

The founder and CCO of the Olivia Palermo Group and her husband Johannes Huebl attended the premiere as guests of Campari.

The couple arrived in Venice the morning of the event from Munich, where they had a brief respite after the F1 Grand Prix in Amsterdam.

As Palermo had been traveling, Giambattista Valli and Tamara Ralph “were both kind enough” to send gowns to the “stunning” Venice Venice Hotel where she was staying, Palermo tells PEOPLE.

See what dress she chose, how she accessorized and more in the exclusive gallery ahead.

The Squad's All Here

"After a quick bite to eat, I got into the glam chair with my long time European makeup artist Sam Tsan , a lead pro artist at Charlotte Tilbury, and hairstylist Philipp Verheyen . I always listen to electronic house music (more melodic than dance though) to keep the vibes energized as its a long night ahead."

Makeup Must-Haves

"I love a Charlotte Tilbury glam table! I’ve known Charlotte herself forever, and even have my own Hot Lips shade "In Love with Olivia," but tonight was all about their iconic Pillowtalk shade and overall red carpet glam. Sam is so talented, she has been doing my makeup when I am in Europe for probably over a decade now."

One Major Gown

Courtesy of Olivia Palermo

"I decided to go with the pale pink silk crepe off-the-shoulder gown by Tamara Ralph Haute Couture . I loved the silk petal adorned sleeves."

Final Touches

"Tamara Ralph, whose debut show I attended during Paris Couture in July, arranged for a seamstress to meet me and do a proper fitting. My fashion philosophy is no matter whether something is from Zara or Couture, proper tailoring is essential!"

Gem of a Necklace

"No red carpet look is complete without a little glitz! And I am most definitely a jewelry girl. While my new short hair is great for an earring moment, I think the neckline of the dress called for a necklace. The vivid pink of the rubellite in this yellow gold Marco Bicego convertible lariat pendant fit the bill perfectly." [Palermo paired the eye-catching piece with a stack of gold and diamond Marco Bicego rings.]

"After I munched on a few macadamia nuts and finished my oat milk cappuccino it was time for final looks!"

"And off my husband, Johannes Huebl, and I went into the Venetian sunset via water taxi!"

Almost There

Olivia Palermo's Beauty Secrets: Brows, Business And Bridal Make-Up

The fashion icon and entrepreneur on building a capsule beauty routine and why brows are so important.

If there's anyone that could tempt even the most anarchic beauty rebel into snuggling up in camel cashmere with an expertly applied brown smokey eye and glowing skin, it's Olivia Palermo. An expert at pairing all things expensive and understated, the fashion influencer and entrepreneur's eye for exquisite style has made her an icon.

Now, the New York native is bringing her enviable taste level to the world of beauty, launching her own eponymous line, Olivia Palermo Beauty. And she knows her stuff. 'I’m a true glam girl so I make sure I’m good at applying every part of my make-up,' Palermo tells ELLE. 'I try to do my glam team proud and maintain their work when I’m doing it by myself. I’ll send them visuals once in a while and they’re always very happy.'

We caught up with Palermo to discuss the importance of good brows, the secrets behind her signature eye make-up and what inspired her wedding day beauty look...

olivia palermo beauty

On launching her own beauty brand...

'With Olivia Palermo Beauty it was really about taking everything I’ve learned over the years and adapting that with my own formulas. I approached it like I would with fashion - finding those key pieces in your wardrobe. So I started with three great lipsticks, a great eye palette, a serum and a setting spray and I’ll continue to roll out more products from there. I wanted to make sure there was something for everyone, whether it was for guys or girls, so it was important for the collection to reflect that as well.'

On finding what products work for her...

'I always start with the basics. Skincare has been hugely important to me from a very young age. I’ve been seeing Dr Dennis Gross since I was an early teen if not a pre-teen and I still see him today. It’s really about the science and what your skin needs. Skin is different for each person so it’s about figuring out your own system and finding products that complement your skin. I think that’s the case for make-up as well, whether that’s foundation, concealer, powder or whatever. Sometimes less is more.'

On where she finds beauty inspiration...

'I’m a real fashion girl so I look to beautiful high fashion editorials for make-up inspiration. Anything that Charlotte Tilbury or Pat McGrath have done, they always have an incredible vision and talent for creating fantasy and glamour. I look to documentaries and fashion books as well, sometimes it’s not even necessarily fashion but I can take elements from it and create my own vision.'

On her everyday beauty routine...

'Then I love Japanese eyelashes, they’re just really beautiful and not over the top. One of my favourite things I found in Japan years ago and that my whole glam team have is a mini eyelashes curler. When your lashes have a mind of their own, it’s perfect.'

olivia palermo beauty

On her wedding day make-up...

'It was really important for me to look like the best version of myself on my wedding day. I always say that you still want to look like yourself just a little bit more highlighted maybe, you don’t want to have a totally different face of make-up that doesn’t represent you, especially on that day! So for my wedding make-up I kept it fresh and classic. Lacey Redway did my hair and Itsuki did my make-up.'

On the importance of good eyebrows...

'Eyebrows are a very important thing. I think we all fell for the skinny brow trend, it was a universal issue! I think everyone should leave their eyebrows alone for a minute, let them grow and I know that’s not easy, sometimes brows can be stubborn. But I’m really about keeping them full and groomed but not overly shaped, it shouldn’t look like they’re tattooed or drawn on.

'When I get out of the shower I set my brows to create the shape of them so they’re tame! Otherwise I leave my brows to my make-up artist Andrea Tiller, she’s really the only other person who touches them.'

On the secret to her signature smokey eye....

'When it comes to a smokey eye it really depends on what you’re going for with your outfit, where you’re going. You can do a nice one for day with brown and charcoal shades and then in the evening bump it up a bit with an aubergine or brown liner. I think when you just use black it can look quite heavy. I’m not really one for a liquid liner, I like to have that control and be able to blend if needs be so I use a pencil eyeliner instead.'

They’ve been “It” girls, they’ve been bloggers, they’ve been influencers, they’re now maybe content creators — and despite skepticism from some of the editorial elite, they’re as much a part of the fashion industry as ever. Our feeds today have never been more flush with people who are their own brand, who are making careers out of partnerships and appearances and paid posts. The longevity of this largely remains to be seen: what does it take to truly build influencing into a career, how does one stay relevant, how do you scale into a major business?

“I always had a feeling I was going to be kind of in the public eye,” Palermo says. “I had a sense of it. I didn’t know why, I’m a very private person. But I had a sense of it, somewhere along the line it was going to happen, be part of my career. Luckily, I’ve navigated it really well.”

Moments before, Palermo has breezed into the restaurant at Fouquet’s in TriBeCa, gushing with apologies for her 30-minute-late arrival and unhooking a bedazzled handbag from her arm as she swings into a booth. She’s as kempt for a Thursday lunch as for any appearance and, over the next hour, will give off a nonchalance toward her enduring success as if it’s something she’s barely aware of — versus, as we suspect, something she’s carefully cultivated years on end.

“I’m a person of influence. I think that’s a better way of putting it,” she says of the term “ influencer .” “I think, again, we go back to trends and trendy terms, and I think when I started out it was ‘blogger,’ and I’m like, ‘No, I don’t blog. I have a website. We create content.’ So whenever someone’s using the trendy word or lazy terminology [that doesn’t] describe a person’s overall, I sort of find it a little amusing. They’re like, ‘Oh, influencer.’ And I’m like, ‘I’ve been doing this job before the meaning even arrived.’”

The 37-year-old says she’s at the precipice of Olivia 3.0. First came TV, then modeling, ambassadorships, collaborations and consulting for brands. After that, it was time to create her own brand.

“I really enjoyed all of that very much but I really wanted to take a step back from it because I feel like I wear so many hats and I can do so much — I really just need to figure out what. 2.0, I think that was really about building the brand and looking at it from a full circle — and then COVID hit,” Palermo says, which led to her shutting down her namesake labels in fashion and beauty, as well as her website. “I was not upset about it because at the end of the day, I’m a true believer that everything does happen for a reason and you just have to really reflect on absolutely everything.”

Post-pandemic, she’s downsized, now employing just one jack-of-all-trades team member and handling her social posts herself (with the occasional help from her husband, Johannes Huebl, with Instagram Reels, which she finds tricky), and is in the midst of a general reset, looking ahead to her next chapter. Her approach could serve as a how-to for staying power in the industry: Develop an identity and stick to it and the brands will come.

“I think that having it be more of a corporate account, you lost that personality a little bit. It was a little bit too sterile, I felt. You can definitely tell the times where I’m really taking the time to post, because it’s probably more of funny emojis or little Japanese funny things that you’re like, ‘Oh, that’s definitely Olivia,’” she says.

“This is something that I think probably everyone deals with, but a brand wants you to say a certain thing, but you know the voice of your channel and you have to make it work. And if you decide to do what the client wants, they are going to have to understand that those numbers are going to go down, it’s not going to be successful, and then it only hurts you when those numbers are down. So we’re a big believer of, please listen to us or else there’s no point in doing this.”

“I completely pulled back after COVID,” she says. “I thought instead of just holding onto anything, let’s just start from scratch and reassess and just do a 3.0. Then mentally, you are feeling much lighter and you have a clear mindset. I don’t think anything I ever do is a failure. I think in life, you’re constantly learning and you’re growing. If something isn’t working, you’re like, ‘Why isn’t this working?’ To make sure that you don’t do that in the next round. But I think in a way, everything is a success because you take that and you just keep growing with it to make sure that you’re better in the next round, in the next round, the next round, and be able to share that knowledge with the people that you work with.”

Which is the sort of confidence and self-assuredness that comes from experience. While influencers today may become stressed if a collaboration doesn’t translate into numbers or engagement drops, Palermo trusts in herself to know the next thing is around the corner.

“No Negative Nancy over here,” she says. “You can’t sit there and overthink, you just have to keep moving forward and then it will come.”

As for what sets her apart from others in her field?

“I work really hard. I love what I do. I love my fashion community. I wake up every day and it motivates me,” she says. “My friends motivate me, seeing what they do motivates me. Our industry, the beauty that the designers bring, the energy that we see with marketing, with everything.”

And the field in general?

“I think I kind of stand in my own little world and there are people around me that I grew up with that are the same age, we grew up in the same industry, so for sure I see them and I’m like, ‘Yeah, we grew around the same time. That’s fine.’ But I don’t think I can think of a person,” she says. “I’m not shading, I’m not at all I promise. I literally just can’t. I’ve never been into comparison. I just do my own thing.”

“I do so much behind the scenes privately that no one sees and I would never publicly talk about it. There’s brands that have IPO’d that I’ve done the introduction emails for, that I’m just happy to help,” she says. “To me it’s normal. It’s just like you’re helping friends.”

She is aware of the fashion influencer culture en masse today, but pays little attention.

“I smile at it and I am like, ‘OK, I’m glad I created some sort of platform for everyone in the world to be able to have their own voice. I appreciate that,” she says. “You go do you.”

Olivia Palermo

I was never quite sure what an “It girl” was — until I met Olivia Palermo.

The idea always baffled me. What was this “it” factor the tabloids spoke of? What did having “it” mean? It should have been an easy question to answer, but honestly, unless you’re a New Yorker, it is a bit of a conundrum.

Collins Dictionary describes an It girl as “a fashionable and attractive young woman, especially one who is well known for attending social events and having influential friends.” Cambridge Dictionary basically states the same: she’s “a famous young woman who is known for going to a lot of parties and social events.”

But. The phrase does have legs. It was allegedly coined by the early 20th-century Hollywood screenwriter Elinor Glyn in reference to Hollywood sex symbol Clara Bow, though the current use dates back to the 1960s. It has withstood the test of time, remerging shiny and new despite never having actually gone anywhere. Traditionally, these It girls were socialites, but they could be models, actresses, DJs, or designers. And recently, thanks to the new Hulu series Queenmaker: The Making of an It Girl , this type of girl is back in the national conversation more than ever nationwide.

And Olivia Palermo has most definitely always been an It girl. I mean, come on … she’s a fashion darling, entrepreneur, and international style authority with porcelain skin and fabulous hair. But she also has something else, something untouchable. And now, I think I finally know what that “it” is: confidence.

Just a few days after her Haute Living cover shoot at The Carlyle hotel, Palermo is at home in Manhattan, lying in bed with back spasms. But because she’s incredibly well-mannered and polite, she hasn’t canceled our conversation. She and I have gone through a slew of topics in record time; even so, I can see her smiling (metaphorically) through gritted teeth, a well-bred, mannered lady through and through.

At the moment, we are, by and large, discussing what she needs to do on a daily basis to feel good. There’s a lot: a daily Tracy Anderson Method, Pilates, or Natural Pilates workout; a good manicure (from Plaza M Spa, of course); facials; trips to her nutritionist. Basic maintenance, as it were, in her opinion.

These things make her feel good, right? But does she need them to feel confident?

The answer, of course, is a resounding hell, no. “Well,” she says dryly (and here, I imagine her as a 1920s-era starlet, cigarette holder in hand, inserting the word “honey” in front), “since I was born, I’ve never had a lack of confidence.” I’m in shock. For someone so very much in the public eye, someone who is constantly dissected by the media (though in her case, quite positively), someone who lives in New York City, where even therapists have therapists, it’s a pretty bold statement — but 100% believable. I have not an ounce of doubt that she means it.

“That’s something I’ve never had a problem with,” she confirms. “I’m jokingly saying that, but I’m also dead serious.”

I express my surprise and note that she’s a rarity, especially here in the Big Apple, which, for most folks, has sharp teeth that tear before one even tries to take a bite. It’s a place that can wear you down quickly if you’re not tough enough to hack it. Her advice: “Go get a massage in a nail salon. You’ll feel a lot better.”

Palermo isn’t being rude. Again, she’s unfailingly polite. But despite her fragile Audrey Hepburn-esque façade, the woman is made of steel. It’s how she’s managed to create and operate an empire for the past 15 years, after all. So, believe me when I say that, though her confidence is part of the recipe to her success, it is certainly not all of it. She is far more complex than that.

Olivia Palermo

“It’s a part of me, and I’m sure somewhere, somehow, it had a positive effect on who I am, but I think there’s a lot more to me than just confidence,” Palermo declares.

Palermo is the ultimate onion: a driven entrepreneur and style authority whose curatorial approach to fashion has solidified her as an industry tastemaker. She is both the founder and chief creative officer of Olivia Palermo Group Inc., which includes the e-commerce platform OliviaPalermo.com. She has worked with some of the world’s most iconic fashion and beauty brands both behind and in front of the camera, as both a creative consultant and ambassador. She is a philanthropist and a designer, a daughter, a sister, a wife.

And yes, she is also an It girl, although you’ll never hear her refer to herself as such … out loud, that is.

“Of course, I have [associated myself with that term] — it’s just not something that I would say first person. I wear many, many hats, and that’s one of them,” she admits.

Outside of being the very definition of an It girl and having that “it” factor, she’s okay with the phrase. “It’s a part of history, something that’s been in place for a really long time. You know, just like anything in culture and pop culture, you have different titles, and the meaning of it slightly changes with the more modern times. I don’t have an issue with it, but I also don’t have that many feelings on it,” she says.

When you’ve maintained a career in the public eye for as long as Palermo has, perhaps the fact that she is still being referred to as something — however flattering — that her 20-something self might have worn like a badge of honor isn’t quite so appealing at 37. Not when she’s accomplished so much in the interim. She’d prefer to take those other epithets, thanks very much — the ones that she’s actually earned.

Olivia Palermo

Ultimately though, Olivia Palermo just doesn’t care. She’s maintained a career in the public eye for 15 years by being herself, flicking the fickle and sometimes unforgiving nature of public opinion away like an errant gnat.

“You know, I’ve been fairly fortunate. I really love the industry that I’m in, and I work with incredible people. We all really inspire each other and highlight each other. I think that overall, it’s nice to have a level of respect with the peers that you work with in your industry; it keeps you motivated and excited,” she says.

I press her here. Because Palermo is very much the kind of person who makes headlines every time she wears a stellar outfit out in public (which is often) or, for example, gets a haircut. I reference a recent article from Harper’s Bazaar that declared, “Olivia Palermo’s new bob signals summer.” That, I say to her, is a lot of pressure.

But not for Palermo. “[That kind of press just] gives me a chance to share the joy and the respect I have working with the team of people that I do — medical physicians, dentists, dermatologists, my hairstylist. And we all take inspiration from each other, you know? I think that when you’re doing something that inspires people [no matter who you are, it has to be a good thing].”

Olivia Palermo

PARIS IS ALWAYS A GOOD IDEA (thanks, Sabrina; thanks, Emily) for most, but in particular, for Olivia Palermo. She’s about to head to the City of Light for Paris Haute Couture Week (or simply “Couture,”as she calls it), home to Dior, Louis Vuitton, and more. And as you might expect, she doesn’t pack light.

In fact, the Manhattan-born, Paris-schooled fashionista has a serious travel system. And it will never, ever involve a carry-on. Or Birkenstocks. Shudder.

“I’m not that person, [a carry-on person],” she declares. “I have a serious system, and I love my system. No matter if it’s for a few days or a few weeks, it’s still the same system, and I always know exactly what I need. Luckily, I get to travel to a lot of great cities, so if I need something, I have access to it. But it also gives me an excuse to go shopping and find a new brand I might like.”

Everything efficiently fits into one (or two) of her Rimowa bags, which she’s been shipping, as any It girl worth her salt would have done, well before the company was acquired by LVMH. Everything goes in garment bags and dust bags, with shoes packed independently. Ziplocs are her best friend. And then, she only flies Lufthansa or Swiss airlines, because they keep her on time to her jobs. “Some people take a bus to work; I take Lufthansa and Swiss,” she says. Lucky girl.

When she arrives wherever she may be going — be it to Paris, Milan, or somewhere else equally as fabulous — she shops and fills those Rimowa suitcases up with even more designer clothing. “I really love online shopping, but I do feel like there’s something about immersing yourself in a rack of clothing, going through stores throughout your travels, whether it’s a long weekend or an actual trip. Because, you know, those things that you can find in small boutiques around the world — although a lot of them have the same commercial luxury pieces — also have small, niche brands that turn out to be nice little treasures. I’ve been really fortunate to be able to implement that and make sure I have a little piece of everywhere I go in my wardrobe. I really do believe that when you wear it, you think of the different cultures, you think of the different vibes, because each city has its own unique style.”

Olivia Palermo

Although Palermo’s style is informed by all of the various cities she visits and the women she encounters in each, she’s a New Yorker through and through — New York, the city where she was born, raised, and currently resides with her husband of nine years, Johannes Huebl, a German model, photographer, and designer. This is fitting because Palermo began her career as part of MTV’s reality show, The City, which focused on the personal and professional lives of, well, city girls working in fashion. (Palermo first worked for designer Diane von Furstenberg on the series and, later, in the accessories department of Elle magazine.) It is where she signed with the Wilhelmina International Inc. talent agency to focus on the development of her brand, where she became a guest editor for Gap’s now-defunct Piperlime.com, and where she appeared as a guest judge on Project Runway. New York is unequivocally her city. It is home. It is where she is happy — and always where she is happy to come back to, no matter where her travels may take her.

At the moment, that includes Paris (natch) as well as Spain, given that her latest venture is a collaboration with Spanish fashion label Scalpers, a chain founded by the 20th Duke of Feria and his friends that is dearly beloved by the jet set. She’s currently working on a capsule holiday collection for the brand — a fusion of Scalpers’ ethos and her own personal style — which is seeking to expand its women’s market. Clearly, they knew exactly who to call.

And so, Palermo is truly in the perfect place (both literally and metaphorically speaking): heading into Paris Fashion Week (“couture”), ready to see beautiful things from the world’s best designers. Then, she’ll head to Lanserhof, one of the world’s best wellness retreats, in Austria before heading home to her handsome, supportive husband — the Paul Varjak to her Holly Golightly, the man who “helps me all the time, helps me to be me, [who] lifts me up” — before going right back into fashion month and more fashion. She’s living the dream, sartorially and otherwise.

Needless to say, it is a very good thing to be Olivia Palermo. There’s certainly no one else she would rather be. And why not? She’s a woman who has it all, by her own design. And that makes life impossibly beautiful.

“I’m very happy,” she allows, noting, “But I’m always a happy person. I’m always growing and evolving in life, and that’s important, because if you’re not growing, then there’s something wrong; there’s a problem. But yeah, I’m really happy, and in a healthy place, mentally and physically — minus my back at the moment. I’m inspired and working with new clients, which is exciting. I couldn’t ask for more. That is my life. And I love it.”

There “it” is again. And I think by now we can all agree — whatever “it” is, Olivia Palermo has it.

Olivia Palermo: Where is the Fashion Influencer Now?

of Olivia Palermo: Where is the Fashion Influencer Now?

In Hulu’s ‘Queenmaker: The Making of an It Girl,’ viewers are given an insight into the inner workings of the life of the New York elite. Featuring some of the most prominent socialites from the 1990s and 2000s, the documentary has gained much praise from the audience. One such person whose presence in the movie has gained much attention is Olivia Palmero. The socialite was once one of the most famous from New York’s elite and continues to retain a significant fan following.

Who is Olivia Palermo?

Born on February 18, 1986, Olivia Palermo is the only daughter of real estate developer Douglas Palermo and interior designer Lynn Hutchings. She and her younger brother Grant Palermo belong to a family of Italian descent. Olivia spent her younger years in the Upper East Side, New York City, New York, and Greenwich, Connecticut. Born in New York City, she attended Nightingale-Bamford School for her elementary education. Olivia later attended St. Luke’s School for her high school studies. Though she has disclosed to the world that she was diagnosed with a learning disability, she has not shared any more specifications on the same.

A former intern at Quest magazine, Olivia rose to fame after she garnered the attention of Patrick McMullan, who was widely respected for his ability to catapult one to the top by capturing them in his photographs. Soon afterward, she became a famous socialite, yet her ascension was far from the smoothest. In fact, Olivia is well-known for taking legal action against ‘Socialite Rank’ in 2007 when the anonymous blog claimed that she had asked other socialites to give her a chance, something that she denies to date. Due to her active lifestyle choices and charitable ventures like New Yorkers For Children and Operation Smile, she had no shortage of admirers and gained much respect.

In 2008, Olivia stepped foot in the world of television by being a part of ‘The City’ from 2008 to 2010. 2011 saw her appearing for special episodes in shows like ‘Britain’s Next Top Model’ and ‘Project Runway.’ Additionally, Olivia made a cameo in ‘The Smurfs.’ Due to her eye for fashion, the socialite has also worked as a model and has been the face of many brands. Moreover, she has graced the front cover of reputed magazines like Cosmopolitan, InStyle, Elle, and many more. Besides, the New School graduate is known for partnering with Carrera y Carrera, Aspinal of London, Nordstrom, Banana Republic, etc.

Olivia Palermo is Thriving as an Entrepreneur Now

Olivia Palmero has continued to hone her entrepreneurial skills. Presently, she is the Founder and CCO of the Olivia Palermo Group. Furthermore, Olivia has established Olivia Palermo Beauty, a brand named after her that offers a variety of makeup products to its clients. With over 7.9 million Instagram followers, her fame continues to grow, and she is known for partnering with major brands and promoting them via social media.

As for her personal life, Olivia got married on June 28, 2014, to Johannes Huebl, a model from Germany. The affection between the two is quite evident, with each often posting pictures with their significant other on social media. Given Olivia’s work and dedication, it is no wonder that she can often be seen at high-end events and is often greeted by much enthusiasm and joy. We wish her the best and hope her ventures continue to prosper.

Ever Wonder What Olivia Palermo’s House Smells Like?

By Rachel Wallace

Perhaps one of the original influencers, Olivia Palermo parlayed an appearance on the 2008 reality show The City (the NYC spinoff of Lauren Conrad' s The Hills ) into a career in fashion and (for lack of a better word) influencing her 6.5 million Instagram followers. She launched a fashion label called the Olivia Palermo Collection in 2020, and recently entered the beauty space with a makeup line. And while she has yet to try her hand at a home decor line, she recently teamed up with the luxury candle brand Sicily Hill to create a scent.

“I’ve been a fan of Olivia’s for years now, and I’ve always kind of viewed her as a muse for my own personal style,” the brand's founder, Jessica Hill Howard, tells AD. When Howard approached Palermo, the latter knew exactly what kind of smell she wanted to create. The result of their collaboration is a three-wick 26-ounce Citrus Blossom candle. Palermo tells AD more about the scent and her personal affinity for yummy smells.

Citrus Blossom Triple Wick Candle

Sicily Hill

Architectural Digest: Are you a big candle person?

Olivia Palermo: It is a big part of my life at home and throughout my travels for so many years. My friends joke that they can find my hotel room because they smell my citrus and floral scents. So it was actually perfect when Sicily Hill reached out. I always liked a light citrus and white flower, so we really focused there. We worked on three different samples, and we were able to come up with one that we really loved.

How do you use scent in your own home?

Candles are important. And just like in interior design, where you want to make sure you have a focal point or a color that kind of transitions from one room to the next, I think it is similar with scent. You want to have consistency, and as you go throughout the apartment or home you can incorporate scents that complement your main scent.

How would you describe your own personal style when it comes to interior design?

Just like with fashion, your eye is always evolving. Your home is always evolving. You don’t have the same style when you are in your early 20s as you do in your 30s and so forth. So you are constantly making little changes and adding knickknacks. We always have candles, and I would just say it really depends [on the home I'm decorating]. You just have to know what your vision is, but  you have to design for that home.

What did you learn growing up with an interior designer mother?

So much. It is an open-ended question. I absolutely love the D&D Building, and on Lexington I love going into the showrooms. I love all the patterns and textures and colors. That kind of goes hand in hand with fashion. I love playing with different patterns when making a collection.

So many people view candles as a part of their self-care routine. What is your personal self-care routine, and how do you relax at home?

I take a nice epsom salt bath and hot shower and just try to decompress. Maybe watch an episode of Downton Abbey . Get into bed early. When it comes to routines I leave it up to the professionals like my dermatologist and estheticians.

Olivia Palermo Debuts Her New Clothing Line for Spring

The collection is a reflection of the fashion authority's personal style and the next step for her growing brand.

Headshot of David Nash

H aut e on the heels of launching an e-commerce platform on her website last fall, Olivia Palermo just debuted an eponymous fashion label and stylish women everywhere can’t get the trend-setting style authority off their backs–and why would they want to, given all that the polished line has to offer.

“It’s very soft and ladylike,” she says of the inaugural Spring Summer 2020 line complete with a range of silhouettes in a mostly neutral palette and in-house designed prints. “There are skirts with retro prints and a lot of movement giving a very light Italian feel, and a selection of great pieces for layering including a white neck-tie blouse and a lace turtleneck.”

Prices range from $295 for a Trapeze Tank and $495 for the Neck-Tie Pleated Midi Dress , to $1,595 for the ultimate Lace and Leather Convertible Moto Trench .

olivia palermo

Palermo explains that she and her brother, Grant, have taken their time to build the overarching Olivia Palermo Group in order to get a fashion line right the first time. “The collection has been a few years in the making,” she explains. “We wanted to figure out the next stages of the OP platform, which included creating thoughtful, curated content on the editorial side, supporting emerging design talent, and then building out our in-house OPC team.”

That team includes the brand’s design director, Alice Fern, who previously served as a senior ready-to-wear designer for Michael Kors and Rebecca Minkoff. “Alice has been incredible in understanding the brand vision and bringing it to life,” says Palermo. The New York-based entrepreneur and fashion influencer invested in other veteran talent including Lisa Metcalfe, a founding partner of LA ultra-luxe brand Pam & Gela, and her husband Jim, who play integral roles in the brand’s wholesale and production arm.

opc

Along with the spring offerings, Palermo and Fern took a holistic approach and built out both pre-fall and fall collections as well. “The first three seasons for any new brand are a learning process,” remarks Palermo. “You’re figuring out your clientele, what works and what doesn’t, and we’re really lucky to have so many incredibly knowledgeable people on board with years of industry experience helping to strengthen the brand.”

Palermo says to expect more statement pieces for pre-fall, and a playful mix of fabrics and textures–including leather and fur–in the knitwear and outerwear for fall.

“Being the first collection out of the gate, you don’t entirely know your client,” offers Palermo, “but we’re very fortunate to have an e-commerce platform with a lot of customers who already trust in the OP brand and know the quality is going to meet their [highest] expectations.”

In light of the coronavirus epidemic, Palermo is giving back through her clothing line. She's offering 20% off of purchases of eligible merchandise on OliviaPalermo.com f or Town & Country readers , including the Olivia Palermo Collection, through April 30, 2020. 10% of the proceeds from this promotion will be donated to Feeding America to help combat the devastation being caused by COVID-19. Before influencers were influencers, cool girls with great taste and style just existed. Olivia Palermo was one of those cool girls. She's also one of those cool girls that has since traversed the crowded seas of influencer-dom to remain relevant, today announcing the launch of Olivia Palermo Beauty. This comes almost 15 years after Palermo made her TV debut as the ambitious socialite rival to Lauren Conrad on the New York City spin-off of  The Hills ,  The City .

Olivia Palermo Beauty

"I’ve always thought of beauty as a glam punctuation," she  writes in the announcement  on her website, where the range will be sold starting today, May 6.

The Olivia Palermo Beauty wardrobe will consist of four pieces at the beginning, including a serum, a mattifying mist, two eyeshadow palettes, and three matte lipsticks. "The packaging mimics my vintage gold bracelet, a treasured piece from my collection that I cannot live without," she says. "That’s how I view Olivia Palermo Beauty. Pieces that are meant to be celebrated and treasured, like heirlooms, but used everyday." Palermo also says she's a longtime proponent of skin health, which is why she's chosen to include complexion products alongside color cosmetics.

Another salient point? Olivia Palermo Beauty is cruelty-free and vegan, and excludes more than 1,300 banned ingredients like parabens, sulfates, phthalates, mineral oil, and talc, in compliance with European Union regulations.

The serum, for instance, contains hyaluronic acid, peptides, plus microfine light-reflecting pigments for enhanced luminosity. The lipsticks are formulated with kaolin and plant-derived carnauba wax, and come in three OP-approved shades: Santa Fe, Rosebud, and Chianti, all neutrals ranging from peach to burgundy.

Palermo says the range, which was created in partnership with Paris-based Marie Claire Beauty Group, has been two years in the making. Learn more about Olivia Palermo Beauty on Instagram at  @OliviaPalermoBeauty .

a woman in a dress

a white and black dress on display

a woman sitting in a chair

a man and a woman

a woman sitting on a couch

a woman in a black dress

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

By Claudia Looi 2 Comments

Komsomolskaya metro station

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

4. Biblioteka Imeni Lenina Metro Station was built in 1935 and named after the Russian State Library. It is located near the library and has a big mosaic portrait of Lenin and yellow ceramic tiles on the track walls.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.
