For the first time in the city it is very recommended. Use both routes ti know what is in the city and go there by your self if you like it.

We'll begin this open-top Big Bus night tour of Madrid from the central Plaza de Canovas del Castillo , in front of the Fountain of Neptune .

During the tour, the tour guide will tell the story of the history of the Spanish capital  as you enjoy the city's bright lights from the comfort of the bus. We'll start by passing through iconic places such as the so-called Aje del Arte (art hub), where we'll see the Prado Museum , the Royal Botanical Garden , and the Reina Sofia Museum .

We'll continue the tour of Madrid with the Basilica of San Francisco el Grande , the Royal Palace , and the Almudena Cathedral . Then, we'll go up the iconic Gran Via , passing by the Cibeles Fountain  and the Puerta de Alcala .

The route will then bring us to Plaza de Colon and the area of Serrano , where the Golden Mile of Madrid is located - one of the most extravagant areas of the city .

BWF Madrid Spain Masters 2024: Swashbuckling Loh Kean Yew grounds Toma Junior Popov in final thriller

The Singaporean star withstood his French opponent's powerful smashes to take the men's singles title in Madrid, with Ratchanok Intanon winning an all-Thai women's final.

Three words came to mind for Singapore's Loh Kean Yew as he fell to his knees to celebrate his gruelling men’s singles final triumph at the BWF Madrid Spain Masters 2024 on Sunday (31 March).

“Oh God, finally.”

That internal exclamation marked the finish of a three-game encounter with France’s Toma Junior Popov which saw Loh jump, skid and even splay out on the court, spurred on by the "The Pirates of the Caribbean" soundtrack blasting from the speakers at the Centro Deportivo Municipal Gallur.

The swashbuckling effort earned the 2021 badminton world champion his first title of the year, coming through 21-11, 15-21, 22-20 in 58 minutes of high-octane action.

“The [Olympic] qualification period has not ended and I'm quite happy that I managed to end off the Europe tour, a four-weeks long tour here, with a victory," Loh told Olympics.com. "Definitely happy.”

Loh took the first game 21-11 with a signature series of jumps and smashes which unsettled his opponent.

“Jumping up is more threating than not jumping, so I try to jump more if I can,” he explained after.

In the second game, however, Popov showed that he had plenty of drive to respond in kind.

Playing in his first final for two years, the Frenchman proved he was more than a worthy match for Loh who had eliminated his younger brother, and doubles partner, Christo Popov in the round of 16.

With family honour at stake, Popov's smashes carried plenty of power. The 1.96m-tall player regularly sent the shuttle flying faster than 400 km/h, clinching the second game with a smash which registered 467 km/h.

“His smashing has always been very strong so it’s not easy to defend against him," Loh said. “The first game usually people can’t follow the speed, but second game, they are more used to it so there’s some strategy changes and I didn’t adapt fast enough.”

Loh did manage to adapt in the third game as he took an 11-7 lead into the mid-game interval.

Back came Popov who won five consecutive points to lead 19-18 in a thrilling climax. But Loh took the next two points before converting his second match point.

Ratchanok Intanon regains confidence after lacklustre post-injury comeback

Later in the day, Thailand's Ratchanok Intanon took the women’s singles final against compatriot Supanida Katethong .

The 29-year-old needed just 30 minutes to win 21-12, 21-9 and secure her first title since the Malaysia Open in July 2022.

It was a welcome confidence boost for Intanon who took time off after injuring her ankle last October. The 2013 world champion had struggled since, dropping from seven to 14 in the world rankings after first-round exits in her last three tournaments.

"I feel like I was ready to give up last week because I lost in the first round and I felt like, 'Why I still cannot go up?'" Intanon told Olympics.com. "I wanted to be back faster. So, why? I already did my hard work. Why am I still not at the spot where I want to be?

"I feel more confident now. I don't think that I'm the best, but I just had good form from the beginning," she added. "I enjoy when I play badminton. Sometimes when you lose, you are afraid to go inside the court because you don't want to lose anymore. But for me, I'm happy that I still listened to my thinking and I decided to come back."

The bus is the perfect solution for visitors worldwide because they offer pre-recorded audio narratives and translations in five languages — French, German, Spanish, Italian, and English.

Are There Toilets on the Big Bus

No. Unlike charter buses, you won’t travel long between stops. So the best thing to do is exit at a stop, find a public restroom, see an attraction, if desired, and then catch the next bus.

How Does the Big Bus Tour Work in New York City

The tour offers three options for purchase — 1-day, 2-day, and 3-day.

When you decide the number of days of your tour and purchase your ticket, the clock starts when your ticket is scanned while boarding the bus for the first time.

The ticket is good for 24, 48, or 72 hours. So, if you have a 1-day ticket and board the bus at 11:00 AM on Monday, it can still be used until 11:00 AM on Tuesday.

Tips and Things to Know Before You Go

The bus has two levels, the upper level offers panoramic views of the city but be careful of overhanging traffic lights and trees. Don’t stand while the bus is in motion.

• After you find a seat, check the audio to confirm it is working.
• Snacks are allowed. Bring a frozen bottle of water and protein bites to keep you energized.
• When on the upper deck, cover up with sunscreen to protect your skin on hot sunny days.
• If you are a family of 3 or more, take seats across from one another so you’ll have views and photos from both sides of the bus.

Tourists were lined up at stop #1 at least an hour before departure and the line extended the entire block and rounded the corner.

We decided to see other points of interest and returned around 11:00 AM.

The wait to board the bus was about 20 minutes. It was a relaxing ride and there we saw so much!

By the time we reached stop #9, we were pumped and ready to exit the bus so that we could explore the city! And you probably will be too.

Here’s the secret sauce that really made the experience memorable. Exit at stop #9 and take a FREE ferry to Staten Island.

To see the Statue of Liberty, stand on the left side of the boat. When returning, stand on the right side.

Final Thoughts About the Big Bus Tour in New York City

Overall, the tour was a pleasant way to see New York city and when you are on the upper deck, you hardly notice the traffic.

Some other advantages of seeing the city by bus include:

• Avoiding parking hassles. I mean, who actually drives in New York?!
• Photo opportunities. With the open-top or large windows, you have excellent photo opportunities as you pass by iconic landmarks and cityscapes.
• Comprehensive sightseeing of major landmarks and attractions within two hours.

I usually opt for a hop-on hop-off bus when I am short on time or to get my bearings in the city before deciding what to do.

Either way, when you take the tour bus, it doesn’t appear impossible to take a bite out of the Big Apple.
