Best Backpacker Whitsundays Tours: 12 Epic and Cheap Boats
There’s one question on every east coast backpacker’s mind: which are the best backpacker Whitsundays tours?
Sailing tours of the 74 Whitsunday Islands are one of the most popular parts of the backpacker route between Cairns and Sydney.
In fact, many backpackers save their pennies to book a spot on an overnight sailing tour for one, two or three nights.
The idea of backpacking Whitsundays can feel daunting because Whitsundays backpacker tours have a reptuation for being one of the most expensive parts of the east coast.
However, I’m here to tell you that there are cheap Whitsundays tours and backpacker deals that will give you the full experience. And yes, you won’t need to eat plain noodles every night for the rest of your trip.
The best backpacker Whitsundays tours are split between party boats and more relaxed boats. So, first things first, think about whether you’re willing to party your way around the islands or if you are keener for one of the more relaxed Whitsundays sailing tours for backpackers.
I’ve also rounded up the best day tours for those who are booking last minute or who want to save their bucks for elsewhere.

Airlie Beach Magnums is the best hostel in Airlie Beach but it books up quickly. It’s home to one of the best bars in town.

How Much Do Backpacker Whitsundays Tours Cost?
A cheap day tour of the Whitsundays will cost between 180 AUD and 200 AUD .
Overnight Whitsundays backpackers tours cost between 450 AUD and 700 AUD .
Popular non-sailing tours include:
- Whitsundays tandem skydiving tour – 394 AUD
- Whitsundays scenic flight tour – 308 AUD

Extra Costs on Backpacker Whitsundays Tours
As a backpacker, you will need to take into account that some costs are not factored into the price of the tour.
What you need to pay extra for varies from boat to boat but typically includes:
- Soft or alcoholic drinks
- Food and snacks outside of the included catering
- Scuba diving
- Wetsuit or stinger hire
Most tours include three meals, snacks and unlimited water, tea and coffee. Soft drinks and alcoholic drinks are permitted on a bring-your-own basis and/or sold onboard.
Most tours provide snorkelling equipment but charge backpackers to rent out wet suits or stinger suits.
Which is Better: Day Tour or Overnight Tour?
When I visited Airlie Beach, almost every backpacker I spoke to wanted to do an overnight tour.
I get it. You’re able to wake up on the water before the crowds reach the silica sands of Whitehaven Beach.
However, it’s not necessarily the best idea for everyone. It involves living in close quarters with strangers and sometimes seasickness.
The main downside of taking a day tour is that the sites will already be busy by the time you reach them. The multi-night tours rise early and get to the beaches before everyone else arrives from Airlie Beach.
To beat the crowd from Airlie Beach, I recommend taking one of the speed boat day tours. They are faster than sailboats, so they can reach the location before everyone else leaving from Airlie Beach.
Cheap day tours for backpackers:
- Tongarra – 179 AUD
- Whitsundays Ocean Rafting Tour – 199 AUD
- Thundercat – 210 AUD
I saved over 2000 AUD on accommodation by looking after dogs and cats on the east coast of Australia. Trusted Housesitters is also how I travel the world rent-free. You don’t need any experience, although it helps.
The 10 Best Backpacker Whitsunday Tours
Best backpacker day tours.
Let’s begin with the best day tours of the Whitsundays for backpackers and tourists on a budget.
Day tours are quick and efficient.
They typically depart from Coral Sea Marina in Airlie Beach at 8 am or 9 am.
They return 7-8 hours later between 4 pm or 5 pm.
One benefit of taking a day tour is that they are usually available at short notice. Most tours can be booked two to five days in advance, whereas overnight backpacker Whitsundays tours need to be booked several weeks or months in advance.
1. Whitsundays Ocean Rafting Tour
Price: 191 AUD
Capacity: 25 – 32
There are several reasons why I have ranked the Whitsundays Ocean Rafting Tour as the best Whitsunday day tour for backpackers.
Firstly, it costs only AUD 191.
Secondly, it’s usually available at short notice. I booked the Ocean Rafting tour just three days in advance.
Thirdly, the boat is fun, fast (65km per hour) and visits all of the popular sights, including Whitehaven Beach and the Hill Inlet Lookout.
I had a great time on the Ocean Rafting speedboat. I befriended another solo backpacker and got on well with the friendly crew, who were locals in their 20s and 30s.
I paid $20 extra for the beach lunch, which was well worth the convenience of not having to arrange my own packed lunch for the day.
Snorkelling equipment is included in the price of the tour, but alcoholic or non-alcoholic beverages and snacks cost extra. Handily for backpackers, you are permitted to bring your own water, soft drinks and lunch.
As the tours use speed boats, they reach Whitehaven Beach quickly and make it less likely that you’ll get seasick.
There are two types of Ocean Rafting tours:
The Northern Whitehaven tour offers more snorkelling time, visiting two snorkelling sites (Hook and Border Island). It includes a bush walk to the Hill Inlet Lookout above Whitehaven Beach, where you’ll find the famous view of the beach. It departs at 8:45 am.
✓ Choose this option if you love snorkelling and don’t want beach time .
The South Whitehaven tour visits one snorkelling site and prioritises time on Whitehaven Beach. It visits the Hill Inlet, a snorkel site and then gives guests two hours to relax on the other side of Whitehaven Beach. It departs at 8:45 am.
✓ Choose this option if you want more time on the famous beach.
Ocean Rafting also has a tour which combines one of the above with a scenic flight. It is a decent value for money, costing 492 AUD.
It’s called the Ocean Rafting Fly Raft Tour and has a 4.9/5 rating from over 300 reviews.
Visits:
- Snorkel sites
- Whitehaven Beach
2. Tongarra
Price: 179 AUD
Capacity: 24
Tongarra is a sailboat which spends one day around the Whitsundays. Unlike the Ocean Rafting speedboats, it offers the chance to sail.
The tour begins with a two-hour sail first thing in the morning, followed by a visit to a snorkelling site. Lunch is provided on deck before the boat sails to the Langford Island Sandbar for a bush walk or beach time.
A banana boat ride is followed by a visit to one further snorkel site (on Black Island or Hook Island).
That’s right, Tongarra does not visit the famous Whitehaven Beach or Hill Inlet. Therefore, you won’t get the famous picture of Whitehaven’s blue swirls.
View from the Hill Inlet Lookout
However, it provides ample sailing and snorkelling time and also visits less-touristic sites.
- Langford Island Sandbar
- Two snorkelling sites (including Black Island or Hook Island)
3. Thundercat
Price: 210 AUD
Capacity: 38
Thundercat is a popular speedboat day tour which departs from Airlie Beach. It costs just over 10 AUD more than its main competition, the Ocean Rafting tours. However, a buffet lunch, afternoon tea and snacks are included in the price of the tour.
This makes it cheaper for anyone who was planning on paying 20 AUD for lunch on the Ocean Rafting Tour.
Thundercat is known for its entertaining vibes. A local guide provides live commentary and, of course, you get a fast, exhilarating ride out to the islands.
The boat departs at 9 am and spends around 8 hours on the water. It visits two snorkelling spots and the Hill Inlet Lookout, then spends one hour on Whitehaven Beach. This combines the stops for both Ocean Rafting tours, but as a result, it can end up feeling quite rushed.
- Hill Inlet Lookout
- Two snorkelling spots
Price: 229 AUD
Camira is a day catamaran which visits the famous Whitehaven Beach and Hill Inlet Lookout. It’s one of the longest day tours available, lasting up to 10 hours. This is great if you want to maximise your time in the Whitsundays, but not so great if you’re prone to seasickness. The boat has a spacious deck.
If you’re a fan of free drinks, every guest gets free beer and wine from 11:00 am, as well as a lunch catered by the restaurants in Airlie Beach.
Backpackers should know that Camira is a popular boat for families, and as it is one of the more expensive day tour options, you’re less likely to meet other backpackers onboard.
Best Backpacker Overnight Tours
1. avatar (2d/2n).
Price: 589 AUD
Capacity: 26
Sailing for 2 days and 2 nights, Avatar is the name on every backpacker’s tongue. This incredibly popular backpacker tour sells out months in advance, mainly because it strikes a good balance between relaxation and party. There are nets on either side of the catamaran which provide a spacious sunbathing area.
The meals on Avatar feature items like beef tacos, crackers and dips, and spaghetti bolognese. Bunk or double rooms are available, another rare feature on a backpackers’ boat.
With two nights and two days to explore the Whitsundays, Avatar has a long list of places on its itinerary, including Whitehaven Beach, Hook Island, Hayman Island, Border Island and Whitsunday Island. Snorkelling is also made a priority; the stops include Luncheon Bay, Caves Cove and Blue Pearl Bay.
Visits may include:
- Hook Island
- Hayman Island
- Luncheon Bay
- Border Island
- Whitsunday Island
- Blue Pearl Bay
2. The Atlantic Clipper (3D/2N)
Price: 693 AUD
Capacity: 54
The Atlantic Clipper is the most legendary backpacker boat in Airlie Beach. If you want to walk away from your Whitsundays backpacker tour with a handful of new friends and a phone gallery full of sunsets, this is the boat for it. Don’t rule out a small hangover either, as parties are one of the biggest part of the Clipper experience.
Resembling a pirate ship, the boat fits 54 people in shared air-conditioned cabins. Everyone gets to take turns using the paddleboarding equipment, waterslides and hot tub. Snorkelling gear and meals are also provided. Those who want to scuba dive can do so for an additional cost.
The second day on the boat is called the ‘Whitehaven Experience’ and spends the whole day at the beach and Hill Inlet.
- Additional sites
3. Apollo (3D/2N)
Price: 703 AUD
Apollo is the most expensive out of the top three backpacker Whitsundays tours. However, it is regarded as one of the best by Airlie Beach backpackers. Apollo is a former sailing boat which has competed in races across the world, even winning the Sydney to Hobart race once.
Over three days, the boat stops along snorkelling sites the Outer Barrier Reef. It also lends out paddleboards for those who want to cruise by the beaches even when the sail isn’t raised. It visits Whitehaven Beach, including not one but two lookouts and both sides of the beach.
This is a fast sailboat which is known to get very crowded. If you’re not happy with being in close quarters with other backpackers, this won’t be the boat for you. Apollo is a party boat, although it’s not as intense as the Clipper.
- Hook Island and Stonehaven Bay
- Langford Reef
- Whitehaven Beach and lookouts
- Nara Inlet and the Ngara caves
4. New Horizon (3D/2N)
Price: 671 AUD
Capacity: 32
New Horizon is run by True Blue Sailing, the same company that owns the infamous Atlantic Clipper. Unlike its relative, New Horizon offers a more intimate trip for up to 32 backpackers. There are 21 cabins, suitable for two, three or four people.
Like the Clipper, the boat is equipped with a slide, banana boat and paddleboards. You’ll get two nights and three days on board, including two breakfasts, one lunch and a dinner, plus coffee, tea and snacks. Handily, you can bring your own alcohol.
The second day is spent at Whitehaven Beach. As for keen divers, scuba diving is also available for an extra cost.
- Other Whitsunday Islands
5. Spank Me (2D/2N)
Price: 529 AUD
Capacity: 27
The name Spank Me should be your first clue that this backpacker’s boat prioritises fun. The two-day and two-night tour visits a nice collection of snorkelling spots like Luncheon Bay, Caves Cove and Blue Pearl Bay and all the best sights in the Whitsundays (Whitehaven Beach, Hook Island, Border Island and Whitsunday Island).
As you can tell, it’s a fast-paced tour compared to some other options. However, there’s also some time to relax on Whitehaven’s silica sand and sip on your own BYO alcohol. The 25-metre sailboat has quite cramped bunks, so it’s great for backpackers who don’t mind sleeping in close quarters.
6. Matador (2D/1N)
Price: 450 AUD
Capacity: 21
Go for Matador if you want to spend two days sailing on a 26-metre former race boat. With regular visits to snorkelling spots and a visit to Whitehaven Beach, it prioritises snorkelling and the Whitsundays’ most famous beach. It’s also one of the smallest boats in the Airlie Beach fleet, with a max of 21 people permitted onboard.
While sailing, you’re permitted to bring your own snacks and alcohol. It’s also only one night, great if you’re nervous about spending two nights on the water.
Matador has an after-party with discounted drinks and food so that you can continue partying with newly-made friends after the tour.
- Whitehaven Beach and Hill Inlet Lookout
- Snorkel spots
- May visit: Whitsunday Island, Hook Island, Hayman Island, Blue Pearl Bay, Border Island
7. Hammer (3D/2N)
Price: 720 AUD
Capacity: 23
Hammer is one of the most luxurious backpacker boats. It has hot showers, USB charging stations and hammocks. Another bonus is that it hosts a small group of just 23 people at a time, who all get to sleep in dormitory-style bunk beds.
You can bring your own alcohol on Hammer. The boat does not have a concrete itinerary. Instead, it chooses its itinerary based on the tides, weather and group preferences.
However, it guarantees a visit to Whitehaven Beach, the Hill Inlet Lookout and snorkelling locations.
- Up to four snorkelling sites
8. Summertime (2D/1N)
Price: 480 AUD
Summertime is a short and sweet one-night sailing tour for backpackers. The sailboat has private air-conditioned cabins, making it one of the more comfortable options.
You can also bring your own alcohol for a drink after a day of snorkelling or kayaking on the boat’s two-person inflatable kayaks.
- Snorkelling sites
When to Book Your Backpacker Whitsundays Tours
During peak season, backpacker Whitsundays tours are typically booked up several months in advance.
If you’re booking at the last minute, you may not get your first-choice tour. However, don’t give up looking, as many boats have last-minute cancellations.
In the worst-case scenario, you may have to change your dates.
Day tours are typically available at shorter notice. You can usually book a day tour two days to one week before your date.
Which Are The Best Seasons?
September to March is the best time to go sailing in the Whitsundays.
Out of these months, spring ( September to November ) is ideal.
Spring (September to November) : The weather is warm, with very little rainfall. There is good visibility for snorkelling or diving. There are light winds, so sometimes sailing can be more difficult. The average temperature is 28 degrees celsius.
Summer (December to March): The weather is hot. However, it is the Whitsundays wet season, which means that rainfall can sometimes last for several days. Nevertheless, this is the Whitsundays’ high season. The average temperature is 28 degrees Celsius but can reach the low to mid-30s.
Winter (June to August): Winter is cooler, especially at night. However, it is the greatest time for whale watching. There’s also a race week in Airlie Beach in August.
Autumn (April to May): Autumn is warm but humid. It’s slightly cheaper than the summer, but the weather can be turbulent.

The Best Whitsundays Tours – Which Should You Choose?!
Trying to figure out the best Whitsundays tours for your Oz trip? Here’s my guide to the best options – inc days trips and sailing tours!
Figuring out the best Whitsundays tours for your trip up the East Coast of Australia can be a bit of a tough decision – there are so many awesome options to choose from and as one of the top things to do in Australia you don’t want to mess it up!
From day trips to overnight sailing adventures – here’s my rundown of the best Whitsundays tours so you can choose the right one for you!
For those who are tight on time or don’t have a huge travel budget to play with a day trip is going to be the most appeal Whitsunday tour to go for.
And most Whitsundays day tours still take in the main things to see and do too – so you wont be missing out on anything major!
Ocean Rafting
- Cost = from $169 (not including lunch)
- Max capacity = 32
One of the most popular Whitsundays tours in terms of day trips is certainly Ocean Rafting – who I jumped on board with for my first trip to the Whitsundays!
Taking in all the highlights of the Whitsundays – including Whitehaven Beach and Hill Inlet. In fact they’re the only day trip provider who are allowed to moor up directly at Hill Inlet Beach.
Not only that but they offer 2 day trip options – the Northern Exposure and Southern Lights tour. Both include the same major highlights but the Northern Exposure trip includes more snorkelling time, whereas the Souther Lights has more beach time.
So take your pick!
The buffet lunch is an optional add on, but I’d highly recommend it as the food was pretty epic and more than enough to go around!
Click here for more info and to book
- Cost = from $189
Another day trip favourite is Thundercat – a custom built vessel designed to make your Whitsundays trip as smooth and comfortable as possible.
As with pretty much all the Whitsundays tour it takes in all the main highlights – including Whitehaven Beach and Hill Inlet Lookout – as well as a couple of awesome snorkelling spots too.
The trip is all inclusive – with lunch, snorkel gear and everything else all part of the package, so you can simply rock up (with your swimwear of course!) and enjoy an epic day out!
Party Boats
For a lot of backpackers travelling the East Coast a party boats is going to be the Whitsundays tour of choice. Load up the goon, set sail for a few days of party chaos and enjoy some rather drunken times with your new travel buddies!
The Atlantic Clipper
- Cost = from $449
- Max capacity = 53
- Departs = 3 x weekly
- Duration = 2 nights
Probably the most famous fo all the Whitsundays tours – or should I say infamous?! The Atlantic Clipper (aka the Clipper) has been providing backpackers with a boozy sailing option and has gained the reputation as the most party centric option in the Whitsundays!
With space for up to 53 customers it’s the biggest boat in the Whitsundays – super sociable and you’ll meet heaps of other travellers on board.
The 34m long Atlantic Clipper is geared up for all things party too – including on deck spa, awesome guides and even its own waterslide, so when you’re not exploring or snorkelling there’s plenty of things to keep you occupied.
If you want a break from partying (or something to do before you crack the first beer of the day!) they also offer scuba diving on board too, which is an epic way to explore the coral gardens around the Whitsundays
New Horizon
- Cost = from $429
The sister boat of the Atlantic Clipper, New Horizon is smaller, but still packs in heaps of awesome party vibes!
As with all the overnight sailing trips you’l check out all the top highlights of the Whitsundays, enjoy heaps of snorkelling and kick back amongst the stunning islands that dot the horizon.
It packs in heaps of party fun – with a diving board so you can walk the plank, jet boat/banana boat rides, SUPs and an inflatable waterslide, so there’s not excuse not to get involved in the chaos!
As with the Clipper you also have the option to add on a scuba dive – both certified dive or intro dive – so it’s the perfect opportunity to tick that off your bucket list too.
If you haven’t spent much time at sea or suffer from a bit of sea sickness then a Whitsundays catamaran trip is a great option – as this style of boat provides the most stability on the open ocean.
And luckily there are catamaran options for all styles and budgets too…
- Cost = $499
- Max capacity = 24
Out of all the Whitsunday tours I’ve tried out and recommended Tongarra is still my personal favourite – I had an absolute blast when I ran my Australia tour and everyone enjoyed our 2 night stay on this epic catamaran boat.
Great food, awesome crew and a itinerary packed with all the Whitsundays to dos made Tongarra a trip to remember.
As an 18-35 boat it is aimed at the backpacker and young traveller market but is certainly more mellow than the party boats!
One of the most unique things about Tongarra though has to be the sleeping arrangements. Instead of a cabin layout Tongarra has a custom built tent which covers the deck at the night – or if the weather is good you get to sleep under a blanket of stars. Sure that’s not going to be for everyone but if you’re up for adventure it’s well worth it.
- Cost = from $479
- Max capacity = 31
- Departs = 6 x weekly
Love the idea of Tongarra but not so keen on the sleeping arrangements? Well Wings offers the perfect alternative!
A stable, catamaran style boat there’s actually 2 boats in this feels – Wings 1 and Wings 2 – which although slightly different in layout, both offer everything you’d want from a fun, sociable Whitsundays experience.
Whilst you sail around the islands top up your tan on the spacious nets at the front (including spray for a cool down!) and you can enjoy the onboard jacuzzi too, which is the perfect place for a sunset beer.
Depending on availability and of course your budget they offer 4 cabin types – private double, shared twin, shared cabin and saloon cabin. The Saloon option is the cheapest, but you need to be aware that during the day you’ll need to pack your bed away as it becomes part of the common area. So if you want a bit more personal space the cabin options are the best bet.
- Cost = from $535
- Max capacity = 18
If you’re looking for a smaller group, more flashpacker style Whitsundays tour then Powerplay is the best option.
This beautiful catamaran departs 3 times a week from Airlie Beach and soak up all the amazing sights, sounds and destinations the Whitsundays has to offer.
With a maximum of 18 its perfect for those who want to kick back and chill out, as well as being a favourite with couples.
When you’re not sailing around the islands make full use of the SUPs, kayaks, snorkelling equipment and of the onboard jacuzzi!
Island Stays
Got more time than just a day trip but dont fancy sleeping on a boat? Or simply want a bit more luxury and space on your Whitsundays tour? Well there is an awesome Whitsunday Island stay that won’t break the bank…
Ride To Paradise
- Cost = from $599 (2 nights) or $299 (1 night)
- Departs = 3 x weekly (2 night option) every Friday (1 night option)
- Duration = 2 or 1 night options
Given the luxurious options across the Whitsundays islands a lot of people think and island stay is well out of their price range – but the Ride To Paradise option is the perfect balance of adventure and comfort!
You’ll spend your days exploring the best of the Whitsundays (yes that includes Whitehaven and Hill Inlet!) and in the afternoon you’ll head to your island base at the stunning Paradise Cove Resort.
Enjoy access to all the Resorts facilities – including beach, pool, spa and hammocks amongst the palm trees!
For solo traveller the shared dorm offers the best value and social option whereas couples can opt for private rooms – including the spacious Dream Villa which wont disappoint!

Backpacking Whitsundays | What to Expect
Backpacking Whitsundays is on top of most backpackers bucket list when planning an East Coast trip of Australia.
The Whitsunday Islands are a compilation of Islands off the central coast of Queensland, situated within the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. They have some of the most pristine beaches and water the country has to offer. One of the most sort after being Whitehaven Beach, a beach that lives up to all the hype.
Since most of the area is within a protected National Park; the reef will be colourful and beautiful, accompanied by equally bright and diverse marine life. This makes the Whitsundays perfect for snorkelling and diving.
Our guide to backpacking Whitsundays
In this guide, you will get all the information you need to make this destination one of your most memorable experiences. Our Whitsunday Island memories will last us forever and it is one for the highlights of our East Coast road trip.
We will give you tips to save money, the best companies to book a tour with and which ones to avoid. Making sure you have the same, if not, better experience than we did.
Best time to visit Whitsundays
The best time to visit Whitsundays would be during September or October.
This is the peak season so expect to fork out a little bit more. It is worth it though as there are mostly clear blue skies, a comfortable temperature and light breezes.
The worst time to visit would be during November – January.
Temperatures can get really high as well as the humidity, with cyclones and tropical showers more likely. We would advise not to travel during these times from personal experience. The temperature was unbearable at times, making us drip from places no human should drip from.
It doesn’t help at night and sleeping on a tight sailboat. If you haven’t slept on a sailboat before, you won’t have the luxury of a queen-size bed. We felt like a tin of sweaty sardines.
Money-saving tip: If you can deal with the temperature, January – March is the best months to secure the cheaper deals as this is out of the peak seasons and holidays.
It was a very different Christmas than the usual and we will remember this Christmas at the Whitsundays forever!
How to get to Whitsundays
If you’re on a tight budget like us then you’ll want to book a boat tour online.
Most people book tours leaving from Airlie Beach to visit the Whitsunday Islands. However, you can also get a flight to Hamilton Island.
Airlie Beach is around a 7-hour drive away from Cairns . If you are travelling from Cairns to Whitsundays, it’s probably best to stop off at other places on the way such as Townsville. You could check out Magnetic Island too, another gem on the East Coast.
Whitsunday Island tours
There are a variety of options with regards to tours departing Airlie Beach to Whitsundays.
You can choose a day trip, a 2-day 1-night trip and many more. To make the most of the trip and make the most of your time, we would recommend booking a 2-day 1-night trip. This means you will be sleeping on the boat one night. A true backpacking Whitsundays experience.
Sleeping under the stars on a sailboat within the Whitsunday islands, how can it get much better than that?
Most tours include free meals and BYO alcohol too, which is an added bonus saving on some money. Don’t plan on taking any glass though such as wine bottles, glass is usually prohibited.
Money-saving tip: If you’re short on money as well as time just book a day trip to see the highlights of the Whitsundays
Some of the most reputable and best Whitsunday tour companies
- Freight Train
We ended up booking the Freight Train via bookme . The website has lots of cheap deals after comparing and shopping around. We would definitely recommend booking through them as we had no trouble whatsoever.
Unfortunately, the same can’t be said for the Freight Train.
What we didn’t like about our Whitsunday Tour
We don’t like to highlight the bad things but we pride ourselves on being honest with our blogs and we would be doing you some injustice if we sugar coat it.
We had a great time sailing through the islands and they took us to some great snorkelling spots, however, the attitude and professionalism of the crew on the freight train tour could be a lot better.
In our experience, the captain showed a lack of respect to some of the group and some inappropriate jokes were being made. It is a ‘My way or the highway’ type of attitude which didn’t bother us too much, as long as we followed the rules.
The worst night sleep ever!
It didn’t help that we travelled during the summer months and the sleep at night was one of the worst we had, small, cramped and ridiculously hot. That isn’t so much Freight Train’s fault as it’s the unavoidable hot temperature combined with sleeping in a small space.
We wouldn’t book with them again and would go elsewhere, but it was the cheapest option at the time for a 2-days and 1-night Whitsunday tour. If you are thick-skinned and are travelling during the dry season, then this still may be the tour for you.
TOP TIP: Book your tour in advanced as soon as you can. The better tours and companies fill up fast.
If you are not doing a road trip and want to get there straight from the likes of Sydney or any other major city, a domestic flight to Hamilton Island within the Whitsundays is possible.
We always use Skyscanner for our flights as we regularly find the cheapest deals on their site.
Keeping safe on your trip
There are certain fears around sailing the Whitsundays and we shared some of them too. Scared of Sharks? We are too. But these little guys below are “Harmless” lemon reed sharks.
One of the fears is jumping in and out of a sailboat with marine life, which can be a scary thought. All those sharks in the water ready to eat you. Well, not quite. Yes, there are sharks in there that can harm you but the likelihood of it happening is very slim.
A bigger concern would be stingers in stinger season. This is why you must check that the tour company provides full-body stinger suits. We would advise wearing these even out of the stinger season to be safe. Thankfully, most tour companies make wearing a stinger suit mandatory whenever you want to swim.
Another one of the things people fear is storms. The likely hood is that there won’t be a storm, considering the time/season you are doing the tour. Even if there is, the boats are built for things like this and you can always go underneath in the cabin and cover your ears with pillows.
If anything does happen and you require medical attention, the staff should all be first aid trained. It’s also comforting knowing there are other tour companies around in case anything serious happens and you need to get seen quickly.
With all this and not getting too drunk on board, you should be good. Trust in the company, they will be very experienced. If you do have any other concerns then just ask the staff.
Where to stay in Whitsundays
Having accommodation within the Whitsundays will be pricey and there are no hostels. In that aspect it’s not backpacker friendly unless you wish to splash out for a special occasion.
Hamilton Island has most of the options for accommodation within the Whitsunday Islands. Some great options are:
- Whitsunday Apartments : Overlooking the Coral Sea, these apartments offer an outdoor swimming pool, free Wi-Fi, air conditioning and even a fully equipped kitchen. Check the latest prices here .
- Reef View Hotel : As the name suggests, you get a beautiful view. It also includes free shuttle transfer from the Hamilton Island airport. Having its own restaurant with à la carte dinner menu doesn’t hurt either. Check the latest prices here .
- Palm Bungalows : Only a 2 min walk from Cats eye beach, these private bungalows are perfect for a chilled out time. Check the latest prices here .
Alternatively, you can stay at Airlie beach like we did as most of the tours depart from.
- Magnums Airlie Beach : Perfect for a solo backpacker or couples. The rooms have air conditioning and are clean and tidy with sharing bathroom facilities. They have a social area with a BBQ and free Wi-Fi as. Laundry facilities are also available for a couple of dollars. Check the latest prices .
Money-saving tip : Book your accommodation at Airlie Beach between overnight tours so you don’t pay for an empty room
Backpacker Hot Spot
The main attraction of Magnums Airlie Beach is probably the bar and restaurant. It is a backpacker hot spot. With a huge open plan, alcohol and food options, it attracts backpackers like bears to honey.
At night it is filled with backpackers and locals jugging down pints and sharing travel stories. It is the perfect place to meet other fellow travellers.
The rooms are at the back of the property and you can barely hear any noise which is good for when you want a sleep.
What we appreciated most is that is right next door to Woolworths so we could buy food within walking distance. You can then use the free cooking facilities and save money by preparing your own meals.
An added bonus is that there is free parking right next door to Woolworths. This makes it stress-free coming back from your adventures at night knowing you have a place to park. There’s nothing worse than spending a portion of your life doing circles looking for parking.
We would definitely stay here again.
Things to do in Whitsundays
Below we’ve listed about 5 Things to do in the Whitsundays!
Now, most sailing tour companies will offer a certain itinerary which involves some of the listed things to do below.
If you struggle between a few companies then a good deciding factor is the sightseeing options they offer on the tour.
We will give you some of the activities and places you can’t miss out on so make sure some, if not all, are included in the tour. If you have more time and money you could even squeeze in a few more of our ideas.
1. Snorkelling the Great Barrier Reef in Whitsundays
The Whitsunday Islands sit within the heart of the Great Barrier Reef.
This makes the Whitsundays perfect for snorkelling. The snorkelling spots will spoil you with beautifully coloured fish and coral reef.
We snorkelled a few times on the East Coast of Australia and the Whitsundays were probably one of the best spots.
We saw some giant gorgeous looking fish, swimming in-between our bodies as they seek out any food. There were some funny looking fish too with eyes popping out of their head and bigger rubber lips.
It was so nice just being one with reef life and seeing them in their natural habitat.
For anyone worrying about sharks, yes you could see some, but if anything you will see harmless reef sharks. We felt pretty safe snorkelling around and other people are close by. If there was a dangerous shark the odds are you won’t be the one to get bit!
2. Scuba diving Whitsundays
Sailing Whitsundays have a breakdown of offers regarding scuba diving in the Whitsundays.
We can’t imagine a better destination to dive the depths of the sea. It’s definitely worth splashing the cash on this magical place. It could be the only time you will do it right? So make the most of it and get down under!
3. Visit Hamilton Island
Hamilton Island is one of the most popular islands to visit within Whitsundays.
It is a car-free Island offering great wildlife sightseeing, such as koalas, kangaroos and wallabies. It is surrounded by lush greenery and it is one of the few places offering accommodation.
If you are backpacking Whitsundays and staying on a sailboat it’s a good opportunity to visit it, otherwise you probably wouldn’t.
You can even get a domestic flight to Hamilton Island from the likes of Sydney and Melbourne.
4. Paradise on Whitehaven Beach
We challenge you to find a better beach. Seriously.
Whitehaven Beach is one of those destinations you see on a postcard or a billboard and think it can’t be real. Well, it is very real my friends.
Covered in 98.7% pure silica, the sand is just a big cushion for your toes to sink into. Due to the 98.7% silica, the sand doesn’t get hot enough to burn your feet so no matter how hot the sun is blazing you can walk around carefree on the sand.
The water isn’t too bad either. It is pristine and clear. You can even spot stingrays and reef sharks.
We got the drone out for a better view (and because we were kind of scared of the sharks) and it was amazing to see these fish roaming the ocean.
Whitehaven Beach changes its look by the tide. Certain parts of the beach get covered up and from above it looks like tasty vanilla ice cream swirls.
Most tour companies will visit Whitehaven Beach and if they don’t there is something seriously wrong.
5. Hill Inlet Lookout
Don’t worry if you don’t have a drone, visiting the Hill Inlet Lookout is equally as good.
It will take around 15 min to reach the top from the beach. It’s quite a steep climb but nothing too strenuous, unless you’ve been stuffing your face with burgers and deep fried chicken for weeks. It might be a little hard.
You will have to do this climb to get to the more popular and better part of Whitehaven Beach. It’s worth it to take the extra steps to the lookout.
The reward will be very satisfying with the breath-taking view. You will see what we mean by the vanilla swirls as the sea partly covers the sand, creating the effect.
From the lookout, you can see other nearby Islands and truly admire how lucky you are to be experiencing such a beautiful part of the world. Soak it all up.
Backpacking Whitsundays TOP TIPS
- Bring your phone to Whitehaven Beach; don’t leave it on the boat. You will want to take a lot of videos and photos
- Make sure you bring an external battery charger, charging ports might not be available on the boat
- Pack your own snacks for in-between meals
- Bring a water bottle (Most boats have drinking water)
- Make sure you pack a towel to dry yourself off with but also something to lay down on the boat with, tanning on the deck
- Bring a good amount of sun cream, sunglasses and a hat
- Don’t bring any alcohol in glass; we put our rum which was normally in a glass into a plastic bottle
- Pay the extra money if you can for the comfort and quality of a tour/boat. It is a once in a lifetime experience and you won’t be disappointed.

Yes, all the vessels have fresh tap water suitable for drinking. However, if you prefer bottled water, you can purchase this on board all vessels. Remember to drink at least 2 litres of water per person per day!
Do I need a sleeping bag?
No, fresh linen is provided on all cruises, and some vessels even provide bathroom towels. Check-in will let you know if your vessel does. Blankets are available in the cooler months.
Are there jellyfish in the water?
At certain times of the year, 'dangerous' jellyfish inhabit these waters, and passengers should take care of their own safety.
'Stinger Season' in the Whitsundays runs annually, generally from October through May. During this period, jellyfish are found in the waters around the mainland and islands and have occasionally been found on the reef.
Passengers entering the water do so at their own risk, and the owners or operators of the vessel will not be liable for any personal injury, illness, death or any other consequences whatsoever of passengers being stung by jellyfish. To minimise this risk, you will be provided with a full-length protective 'Stinger Suit' to wear while swimming and snorkelling during the cruise.
It's highly recommended these be worn all year round, some vessels make it compulsory for the safety of the guests. Not only are they for safety, but they keep you warm in the water, act as sun protection and are an excellent aid for buoyancy while snorkelling.
Does this tour cater for people with a disability?
In order to meet the minimum safety standards, passengers must be able to exit the vessel unassisted in an emergency. For example, they must be able to use a 1.5-metre ladder unassisted, either into the tender vessel or into the saloon area depending on the chosen vessel. Unfortunately, none of the vessels are wheelchair accessible.

Pants, socks, underwear, soap?! Take it from me, packing for a hostel stay is not always quite as straightforward as it seems. Working out what to bring and what to leave at home is an art I have perfected over many years.
Snoring dorm-mates can ruin your nights rest and seriously damage the hostel experience. This is why I always travel with a pack of decent ear plugs.
Hanging Laundry Bag
Trust us, this is an absolute game changer. Super compact, a hanging mesh laundry bag stops your dirty clothes from stinking, you don’t know how much you need one of these… so just get it, thank us later.
Sea To Summit Micro Towel
Hostel towels are scummy and take forever to dry. Microfibre towels dry quickly, are compact, lightweight, and can be used as a blanket or yoga mat if need be.

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital
There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.
How to find the right boat?
There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.
Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.
This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.
Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such option offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).
If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.
Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.
How to buy tickets?
Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.
“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!” wrote (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.
Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.
Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.
Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.
Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as this offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.
This website (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other website sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.
Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.
“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.
There are two main boarding piers in the city center: Hotel Ukraine and Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.
Where to sit onboard?
Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.
The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.
Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.
There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.

Moscow is the capital of Russia and is notable for its important role in history. It's a very sprawling city with many museums and fascinating buildings. Ten percent of Russia's population lives in this capital city and it's a financial and political center for the country. The Moskva River weaves its way through the city and you will find most of the city's sights and attractions on the northern side of the river.
Berlin is the capital and largest city in Germany. As such, travelers can expect typical European prices for everything from hotels to food to sights and attractions. While it's possible to experience this city on a cheaper budget, don't expect to get much without paying a decent amount. With a population of about 4.5 million, Berlin is a very international city that is well known for its high level of tolerance, an eclectic nightlife, an artistic vibe and many historical sights. There are museums, palaces and landmarks spread throughout the city. Despite having a significant amount of damage during the last few years of World War II, Berlin has been rebuilt with an interesting diversity of architecture styles. This is particularly true after the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. Architecture in the city represents many different historical periods ranging from medieval buildings through modern, glass structures.
