Misool Island, a Tropical Hideaway in the Raja Ampat Archipelago

Misool Island is a remote, tropical hideaway, one of the four largest islands in the  Raja Ampat  archipelago, a world-renowned dive destination in the province of West Papua. Located off the west coast of the main island of Papua, directly bordering the Seram Sea, the waters are a veritable traffic lane for many large sea creatures, including whales.

misool

The crystal clear turquoise sea-waters allow spectacular views of Misool’s sub-surface colorful treasures even when still aboard your boat. The sea gardens of Raja Ampat hold 75 percent of all known species of corals and ornamental fish in the world, and boast the highest level of marine biodiversity on the planet.

On land, the wild territory of Misool is one of the most visually breath-taking and captivating sites in Raja Ampat. The island is heavily forested, and at first sight reveals nothing but a thick green carpet of dense forests and mangrove swamps. To the east and west of the island, a maze of limestone pinnacles jut sharply out of the blue sea, carved and eroded by the waves and carpeted luxuriantly in vegetation.

misool

The rare beaches on Misool are pure white sand, fringed with coconut trees leading out to the stunningly turquoise waters. Aside from the enchanting panoramic scenery and wealth of marine life, Misool is also home to ancient cultural sites. A number of petroglyphs can be found on walls of caves throughout the island, dating back approximately 5,000 years.

To get to Misool Island, first fly to  Sorong   Airport in West Papua, Indonesia. This is a domestic airport with available flights from Jakarta, Makassar,  Surabaya , Manado,  Ambon . From Sorong, a private speedboat will take you to the Resort. Boats depart on a pre-arranged schedule by the resort, usually at 7:30 am on alternating Sunday mornings.

The trip takes between 4-5 hours but will seem like no time at all as you journey through some of the most mesmerizing sceneries you have ever seen or ever will see. Transfer fees from Sorong to Misool are included in the resort’s package price.

Coral Triangle Adventures

Snorkeling the Reefs of Misool, Raja Ampat!

The Bird's head Peninsula Seascape, Raja Ampat, resides in the heart of the Coral Triangle

Day 1:  Jakarta / Anara Airport Hotel Jakarta Meals provided: D Meet in Jakarta, Indonesia at our group hotel, Anara Airport Hotel, for the tour orientation and welcome dinner. As is often the case with our internal flight, we will depart for Sorong in the late evening, thus our ‘overnight’ will be in transit to Sorong. Overnight: Anara Airport Hotel, Jakarta.

Day 2:  Sorong / Gaia Love Meals provided: B,L,D Fly to Sorong and transfer to our live-aboard boat, the Gaia Love. Boat orientation and lunch before we depart for our snorkeling adventure into the islands. While we do not plan to have the chance to snorkel today, if time and weather permits, we will give it our best. Overnight: Gaia Love

Day 3 – 5: Pelee / Wayil / Olobie groups Meals provided: B,L,D The rugged limestone island groups to the southwest offer us the chance for big wall snorkeling as the reefs around many of these islands plunge hundreds of feet just a few fin kicks from shore. Colorful sea fans and soft corals adorn the walls while lush, healthy hard coral gardens pack the shallows. In the Olbie groups, snorkeling through huge schools of silversides that hide in the afternoon shade can be a surreal and thrilling experience! Overnight: Gaia Love

Day 6: Boo / Yilliet Meals provided: B,L,D Yilliet and Boo give us the chance for some drift snorkeling where we get to see large schools of snapper, barracuda, and travally as well as schooling planktivores such as fusiliers and pyramid butterflyfishes. Turtles and sharks are common and the healthy reef near shore is a virtual aquarium of tropical marine fishes. Overnight Gaia Love

Day 7 – 10: Wagmab / Lenkafal  Meals provided: B,L,D The northernmost string of limestone islands create network of quiet bay and narrow island passes that make perfect settings for our snorkeling activities. We’ll spend one day snorkeling a narrow channel where on one side we find a colorful wall of soft corals, tunicates, and variety of nudibranchs, and hard coral garden with mangroves on the other side. This area also boasts extensive shallow reefs, a marine lake, incredible fringing reefs systems around remote islets and the chance to explore a huge cave system by dinghy. Overnight Gaia Love

Day 11: Balbulol Meals provided: B,L,D Our last day couldn’t be spent in a more scenic area. Limestone islands erupt from the water with angles twisted by several uplifting events that happened over time. Our snorkeling sites are located nearby in a series of protected bays connected by a shallow channel or a tunnel through the island. The protected bay promote the growth of delicate table corals that grow so large they hang over the sheer vertical walls that define the bay. In the late afternoon, we depart for Sorong. Overnight Gaia Love

Day 12: Sorong / Jakarta / Anara Airport Hotel, Jakarta Meals provided: B, D Disembark for our connection to Jakarta. Check in to our group hotel. Farewell dinner at the hotel. Overnight Anara Airport Hotel, Jakarta.

Day 13: International flights or extensions Meals provided: B

WHAT TO EXPECT

Misool sits at about 2 degrees south of the Equator. As an equatorial island archipelago, weather year round is hot and humid, with nearly daily rain showers occurring in the early morning or late afternoon. Daytime temperatures hover around 86º F (30º C) and  do not fall much at night. Water temperatures average around 82º F (28º C), though cooler temperatures may occur if persistent rains cause a thin layer of cool freshwater on the surface. Currents around Misool are generally light but may be strong at specific sites. While we plan our snorkel session around the slack tides, we also have several sites where having water movement is an advantage. These drift snorkels allow us to cover large tracks of reef without having to swim too hard. Our snorkel sessions are 100% boat supported and two dinghies will be there at all times to assist anyone for whatever reason.

Most of the islands are steep and rugged with small pocket beaches. While we won't have many opportunities to walk on the islands, there may be chances for a beach walk or two. We will have several scenic dinghy tours scheduled during our time in Misool.

Please read more about our daily schedule .

WHAT TO BRING

The following list is a suggestion of things to bring and applies to almost all our trips. Specific items on a particular departure will be noted on the departure information.

-A good fitting mask, snorkel, and set of fins. If your equipment is brand new, please try it out in the pool. Determining the fit and function of your equipment in the pool includes doing several laps with all your equipment on. Doing several snorkel dives is also very beneficial. It is also important to clean your new equipment, especially your mask. Cleaning procedures for your mask include light scrubbing with toothpaste or dishwasher soap to remove the layer of silicon used to preserve the mask during shipping. Clean both sides of the mask. Doing this greatly reduces the chances of having your mask fog. Not doing this, even when using mask de-fogger, usually results in a fogged mask.

-A wetsuit, rash guard, diveskin, or any type of clothing that can be used for thermal and/or protection from the sun. We suggest bringing a full 3mm wetsuit and some type of core insulation like a vest or shirt made of 1 – 2 mm neoprene (e.g., Lavacore or Sharkskin shirts or vests) . These items will not only provide thermal protection but protection from the sun as well. For those who feel that a 3mm suit may be too warm, please consider a full body skin or rash guard to ensure protection from the sun. With regards to thermal protection, remember the saying: It is better to have and not need, than to need and not have. One that note…

-Head protection in the form of a wetsuit hood, a cap, or even a bandana. Anything that can keep the sun off your head is extremely important. It is the most exposed part of our bodies when we are floating on the surface.

-Underwater flashlight on departures with a planned night snorkel

-Biodegradable sunscreen lotion. Sunscreen lotions can be harmful and even kill tiny larvae (baby marine life). It is fine to wear on land, but we highly discourage the use of sunscreen lotions in the water. A full wetsuit or dive skin will protect one from the sun much better than lotions and provide thermal protection. It is truly a win-win for everyone and the marine environment.

-Casual, lightweight, tropical clothing -Sunglasses (and a spare in case you lose your main pair) -Comfortable footwear such as active sandals (Teva, Keen, Merrell, etc.) -Hats. We cannot stress the importance of a hat in the tropics! -All our boats provide items like shampoo, soap, towels, etc. We bring this up because these items represent added weight or may leak.

Other items to consider: -Lightweight rainwear to protect from the occasional afternoon shower -Binoculars

There’s a lot to see at Misool and there are many homestays there. Unfortunately, we don’t know anything about them!

There are two reasons for that:

  • The Raja Ampat Homestay Association does not have the capacity to support homestays in Misool and the other islands of southern Raja Ampat, and
  • Our work for the Homestay Association demands all our available time when visiting Raja Ampat, so (sadly) we’ve never had the opportunity to even visit those other islands!

We know who can help though.

Abdul Muthalib was born on Misool, is an experienced tour leader and rescue diver, and can organise anything you might want to do around Misool.

These Sorong based guides can also provide everything you need to know about how to get to and where to stay at Misool, Kofiau or Salawati.

Anne Putri Alberth Sorondanya Indra Franzpower John Urbon

Our  Raja Ampat Travellers’ Forum can also be a good source of Misool info, and has many members who know far more about Misool and its homestays than we do. Futuristico Tony has posted a great Misool resource there . Thanks Tony!

Contact Misool Homestays

The table below has contact details for some of Misool’s many homestays. These details are regularly checked and updated, and all use WhatsApp.

Please always use Bahasa Indonesia when calling or sending messages.

How to get to Misool

Last updated: February 2024

You will need to allow for a longer stay in Misool than when visiting northern Raja Ampat, as there is currently only a weekly service.

MISOOL to SORONG – Departing Yellu every Thursday afternoon at 1900. Arrives Sorong 0400 Friday morning.

Kayak Misool

Great news for those wanting to go kayaking in Misool: Millekul Adventures have 16 sea kayaks based at Pulau Panun in the eastern Misool archipelago.

Millekul work with Misool homestays and offer a range of paddling adventures. There are short 4 day exploratory adventures perfect for beginners, as well as 2 and 3 week trips better suited to experienced paddlers. Millekul’s Misool kayaking expedition prices are all inclusive, with participants departing from and returning to Sorong.

You’ll find Millekul’s trip schedules here .

How to choose accommodation at Misool

Given that we know nothing about it, your best bet is to ask in our Raja Ampat Traveller’s Forum facebook group , or contact one of the guides recommended above.

Misool phone signal & internet access

Never having visited, we can’t tell you exactly what’s available, but we know that this much is true:

Free WiFi connections are extremely rare in Raja Ampat. You will need a local SIM for your phone. See this page for details.

We have heard that there is at least one homestay there, and have stared longingly at it from a plane window on flights into and out of Sorong. It looks beautiful. Truly remote and untouched.

The guides linked above will be able to help you if it’s on your must go list.

Only part of Salawati lies in the Raja Ampat Regency and we’ve never heard of any homestays there. That doesn’t mean that there aren’t any!

Again, John, Alex or Alberth above will be able to help you if you particularly want to visit Salawati.

Au mois de novembre il y a un ferry de Sorong à missol et quel jour Merci

Yes, as described above, JB.

SORONG to MISOOL (Yellu) – Every Monday evening from Sorong at 2300. Arriving Misool 0700 Tuesday.

MISOOL to SORONG – Departing Yellu every Thursday afternoon at 1800. Arrives Sorong 0300 Friday morning.

I’d like to know if there have been any updates regarding the express ferry? We will be visiting Raja Ampat in May so just planning in advance.

Thanks for your help, Adrian

We’ve heard nothing further about the express ferry Adrian.

The info on this page is updated as soon as we are aware of changes. Fingers crossed for you in May!

We were supposed to return from Misool on Wednesday 3 January 2023 with the Bahari Express. This one doesn’t circulate any more and it remains only the option of the slow ferry which will cancel us 1 week on the spot.

Would you have more precise information concerning the return or not of the fast ferry to and from Missal? Is it possible to find a private individual who can offer his boat (and pay of course) to reach Sorong?

Thank you for your feedback

We have heard talk that the fast ferry will be operating again by the end of the year, but nobody really knows for sure. All we can suggest is to ask the ferry company by calling on one of the numbers provided on the ticket image above:

Rahma: 0813 4328 9673 Anhi: 0821 9952 8832 Nhia: 0822 4849 7849

We don’t know anything about chartering a boat from Misool, sorry. Perhaps one of the guides listed above can help you with that.

Any news about fast ferry on december during Christmas period (19th – 28th december) to/from Misol?

We’ve heard nothing Alvise. Calling the ferry company is all we can suggest.

Ferry Sorong to Misool update: Bahari Express to Misool isn’t running anymore. There is only the slow boat running to Misool on Mondays at 11PM returning on Thursdays at 5PM from Misool. The trip takes 9 hours. I got this information from the guide Abdul, because we wanted to go to Misool mid-January. Well, now this must wait….. In case somebody has info on an affordable liveaboard (eg Kapal Insos) between mid-January and mid-February I would be happy to hear from you.

Hello! Can I pay for the pass directly to Yellu for (Raja Ampat Marine Park entry permit) ?

We don’t know what the arrangements are in Yellu, sorry Alex.

In November 2020, the UPTD advised that the Raja Ampat Environmental Service Fee Card could be purchased through:

Email to [email protected] Contact telephone number +6282134059338 (Allan/Yoan) UPTD temporary office at Jenderal Sudirman Street, Waisai

https://rajaampatmarinepark.com/entry-card/ Here you can

Thanks Alex. Yes, those are the contact details we posted above. At last report, the office in Sorong was not open.

Hello! At the moment nothing is working (didn’t pay the environmental fee). I got to Yellu on ship Fajar Inda 2, which departs from Sorong Port once a week on Mondays. The ship goes to Seram Island with stops at Misul and Yellu.

Thanks for the transport update Alex :)

Hope you had a good time there, despite nothing being working!

In this video, my journey to Yellu (Misool), with English subtitles. https://youtu.be/nuBsUCksUuQ

terima kasih febby

Please see Pelni’s website for connections between Misool and Maluku.

hello, do ferries take scooters? we want to do a road trip from Bali where we live thanks

Hi Pierrick

We can’t say for sure about the Misool ferry, but we know that the Waisai ferry does not take scooters. You need to go on the supply barge if you want to take a scooter to Waisai. It’s most likely the same for Misool.

Suggest you contact one of the guides linked on the page above to confirm this. You might also want to ask if it is worth taking a scooter to Misool: If Misool is anything like northern Raja Ampat, then there are very few roads suitable for scooters!

Espero vuestras respuestas.

Hi Albert. You might find you get a better response by posting this in our facebook group . (It will be easier for respondents to contact you there too.) Good luck and all the best for your visit!

Hola Albert! Si prefieres, hablamos por email (damfidalgo(at)gmail.com) Saludos, Damián!

Hi everyone, we (33 and 38, couple from Germany) are looking for 2 more people to join us to Misool on a guided tour from 3rd – 8th February 2020, starting from Sorong. We will go diving, snorkeling and trekking, including jellyfish lake, love lagoon, Balbubol and so on. We will go with a recommended guide with good english skills. For more information you can contact me directly: nine1 (at) gmx.de

I am looking forward to hearing from you :) Carina

Hello, i’ve been already 2 times in RA in kri island ans this year i plan to go back in RA and specialy in Kofiau island ?!!! Can i have information about this island and the name of homestay if there is !!! How i can reach this place? Thanks you very much for your answer

As stated above Alex: We don’t know anything about Kofiau, and have provided links to three Sorong-based guides who will know more.

good afternoon can you let me know how I can go to Piaynemo island from Misool? Do I have to take the ferry Misool to Sorong and then wasai ?and then take the hotel boat until Piaynemo ,or do they have a ferry Misool wasai? Thank you for your help

Hello Lucie

The way that most people would do that is by taking the ferry back to Sorong, then either joining a Piaynemo day trip from Sorong, or (if staying at Piaynemo or nearby) the public ferry to Waisai then private transport to your accommodation. See this page for the details.

Ladies and gendlemen, could you kindly advise me (send me a link / links) how to find the schedule of a ferry / ferries from Sorong to Misool. The information to look it up at the harbor in Sorong isn’t really helpful.

Sorry Gerard, but there are no ferry schedules published online. We would have linked to them if there were.

All we can tell you is that a Marina Express boat runs between Sorong and Misool’s 35, Foley, Yellu & Fafanlap harbours.

Schedules change without notice. Any of the 3 Sorong-based guides linked above can give you up to date information. They all speak English and we’ve provided contact phone numbers and email addresses for those that have them.

I’ve just come back from visiting Folley on Misool. The schedule is – out to Misool on a Friday then back the next day. Etc. Both departures are in the morning and are very vague with the exact time. Basically you want to be there at 9a.m.and you might leave immediately or you might wait 3 hours. If you’re in Sorong you can wait on the air conditioned boat.

I would like a homestay accommodation for one person on Misool (preferealy close to the resort is that is possible) on 25/11 for one week – I would like also to do snorkelling trips – can you assist – thanks Lyn

As we tried to make clear above, we can’t help you with homestays on Misool.

One of the guides linked at the bottom of the Misool section can.

Or you could try asking this question in our Raja Ampat Travellers’ Forum facebook group .

Backpacking Guide through Misool in West Papua

Misool in West Papua

Misool in West Papua is one of the four major islands in the Raja Ampat Archipelago. This island is off the west coast of the main island of Papua and is directly adjacent to the Seram Sea, which is a traffic lane for many large sea creatures, including whales. Misool Island’s mainland consists of hills, dense forests, and mangrove swamps.

The island’s east and west sides are covered with limestone cliffs jutting into the sea. That’s not all. This 2,034-square-kilometre (km) island is home to ancient cultural sites. There are about 5,000-year-old petroglyphs on cave walls throughout the island. Do you want to visit Misool in West Papua without a travel agent?

Backpacking to Misool Island? Here’s How!

The cost of an open trip to Raja Ampat through a travel agent to explore Raja Ampat for 3 days and 2 nights usually starts at IDR 3,500,000 (excluding airplane/ship transport). That’s for a trip to Piaynemo usually the fare is more expensive. If you take an open trip to other Raja Ampat, such as Misool, the price will be higher.

A backpacker style will spend 3 days and 2 nights in Raja Ampat without a travel agent to get to Piaynemo. The cost that I spent for a 3-day 2, night trip to Raja Ampat was Rp. 2,560,000 (excluding airplane/ Pelni transport).

That compares the trip cost to Raja Ampat with and without a travel agent. Compared to joining the tour, you can save 1 million rupiahs for the same time duration.

Misool in West Papua

Misool island is located in the southern part of Raja Ampat. Misool Island is also currently very popular because of its surreal tourist destinations. Some famous ones include Love Lake, Lenmakana stingless jellyfish lake, and the cluster of karst islands at the top of Harfat (similar to Wayag or Piaynemo).

Transportation to Misool Island

The entrance to the Misool in West Papua is through Sorong. Sorong is not the capital of West Papua Province, but the city is already crowded, and flights are also with large planes.

If you want low prices, be diligent in hunting promo plane tickets. Try to open airline websites regularly, hunt at online travel agents (OTA) such as Traveloka, tiketdotcom, and so on, or hunt at travel fairs.

In addition to planes, you can also use the Pelni ship transportation mode. You can use the Pelni ship from Ternate at the cost of Rp. 397,000 (Class 2A). Incidentally, at that time, I was also exploring North Maluku.

Sorong-Misool Route

Ferry Boat Fast boat to Misool does not depart every day. Sorong – Misool will depart on Monday, Wednesday (12.00 WIT), and Friday (13.00 WIT). On the opposite route, Misool – Sorong departs Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. Departure hours vary depending on which pier you leave from in Misool. Fafanlap Pier at 07.30 WIT, Yelu Pier at 08.30 WIT, and Foley Pier at 09.50 WIT. The ticket price is IDR 250,000 and the journey time is 4 hours.

Choose a Community Owned Homestay

The choice of staying at a homestay managed by the local community is exceptionally qualified to save costs. This community-managed homestay is relatively cheap and affordable.

Tourists are advised to book a homestay for a few days to avoid expensive boat rentals. That way, you can enjoy a pick-up service from Misool in West Papua to the homestay.

Wrapping Up

That’s our guide for backpacker-style travel to Misool in West Papua without a travel agent. It turns out that the cost to Raja Ampat can be thrifty, and you can get there without a tour operator. Now, don’t you have any doubts about traveling to Misool Island?

Misool Island: A Sanctuary of Bewildering Explorations

by LAMIMA | Feb 21, 2020 | Exotic Destinations , Indonesia Yacht Charter Guide

Heart-shaped lagoon

Heart-shaped lagoon

At the south of the equator rests a bewildering world above and beneath the surface of the wild waters. Resting on the intersection of the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean is a heart-shaped lagoon with forests and waters bursting with the lushness of natural beauty. A shining gem carefully tucked in one of the remote parts of Raja Ampat – the Misool Island.

Raja Ampat never ceases to amaze its wanderers with its cluster of majestic islands that are simply worthy of exploration. One of the largest islands of “The Four Kings” is the Misool Island – a tropical hideaway beaming with beauty and tranquility emanating on each of the island’s best sceneries. Those who have been on the island couldn’t help but agree that Misool is an enchanted island of healing and exploration where peace and adventure seamlessly coexists.

Abundant and thriving with life – words that best describe the existence beneath the deep blue waters of Misool. Its enchanting clear waters is a sanctuary to many aquatic and coral species, rich biodiversity protected by the people safeguarding the island.

Preserving the Island’s Indigenous Spirit

Harfat view point

Harfat view point

After thousands of years, the rich history and culture of the island is still being cultivated and can still be immensely felt and seen throughout Misool. Though colonized by the Dutch after it formed part of the sultanate of Tidore in the ancient times, its native core was still preserved and continues to be experienced in traditions and way of life despite the evolution of modern times.

The island once became a territory of the Dutch East Indies colony from 1816 to 1949 and a military base occupied by the Imperial Japanese Navy from 1942 to 1945 during World War II. Despite being colonized and probably influenced in one way or another by its colonizers, its indigenous essence remained solid which was kept alive from generation to generation which is evident from the culture, traditions and the way of life of the people of Misool.

In the deepest forests of Misool are caves with traces of life carved from more than 5000 years ago can be found, and evidence of life that thrived in the most remote places of Raja Ampat. Being part of this rich archipelago, Misool is blessed by the great Mother Nature so much that the people retained deep respect and gratitude towards the nature surrounding them.

Conserving Misool Island’s Beauty Through Eco-tourism

Conserving Misool Island’s Beauty Through Eco-tourism

Rightly neighboring the Seram Sea made the island of Misool a home to many aquatic species including large sea creatures like whales. Contained within the opulent nature of Raja Ampat, it’s clear azure water shares a huge percentage of known coral and marine species there is on the planet proving an abounding life underwater. Being a remote island destination has made Misool exclusive to those who are brave enough to pursue the island despite its location and to explore the life beneath its waters.

The seas of Raja Ampat was once vastly stripped off small and larger fish, including sharks, through years of unregulated fishing. With organizations working together to promote conservation, the seas of Raja Ampat were nurtured and allowed to fully recover, and when nature is given the chance, it can recover miraculously fast.

The lagoon of Misool was once occupied by shark fishing camps and now serves as a nursery for baby sharks. Sharks have returned to the reefs to help restore the balance in the ecosystem and they have multiplied at least 25 times more than a decade ago. The seas of Misool Island were fully protected in 2007 and the recovery from the damage of loose and destructive fishing has been incredible. Once being hunted, the turtles are now seen serenely foraging the bottom of the sea, by the sand and the seagrass. The majestic ocean gliding and endangered giant manta rays have returned from wandering the high seas to finding a sanctuary in the reefs of Misool for cleaning, feeding and sociably intermingling within the biosphere. Misool Island, since its protection, is now hosting three times more fish than ten years ago and is one of the very few places on the planet where biodiversity is progressively growing and thriving.

Misool Island is sanctified with an abundance of its resources, providing for ample wildlife to explore and to protect. The development of tourism in Misool is still in its early stages making it easy for preservation and promotion of marine ecotourism. Some conservation efforts were already initiated and to further strengthen the protection on the island’s resources, several organizations have been developed. One of which is the Misool Foundation that was established as an Indonesian charity that aims to protect marine and reef biodiversity with the help of the local community. Through its mission of upholding life underwater, the foundation was able to support projects that share similar causes such as the Misool Manta Project, Misool Research Center, and the Misool Reserve.

Organizations dedicated to the conservation of the island, like those mentioned above, are committed to demonstrating ecotourism as support to the local community and its economy much more than the ways that could bring harm to nature in the long run such as mining, logging, overfishing and exploitation of natural resources. Through the promotion and showcasing of Misool’s tourist offerings that adhere to the cause of responsible tourism, Misool thrives in countless aspects including the most essential – safeguarding its community and its resources.

Journey To Priceless Reward

Journey To Priceless Reward

The most ideal way to get to Raja Ampat is via Sorong City. Travelers can start their journey to Misool from Jakarta or in cities like Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, and Bali where they can board a plane to get to the Domine Eduard Osok Airport in Sorong City. From Sorong City, the only way to get to the remote islands of Raja Ampat is to travel by sea. The ports in Sorong are docked with ferries that can take you to the island of Misool.

Exploring Misool is best done through a charter yacht in Raja Ampat where you can travel in the utmost leisure and comfort. A yacht charter allows you to explore even the most remote territories of Misool and Raja Ampat. The trip to the island may take 4-5 hours long but the scenic and picturesque journey will give a glimpse of some of the most astounding sites of Raja Ampat.

Exploring the Magnificence of Missol

open trip misool

Misool shares the abundance of marine and coral life of Raja Ampat and they emanate beauty beyond imagination. To get the best experience of the island, one must explore its waters intimately through kayak, snorkeling, and diving, where you can spot many underwater sensations. Exploring the island through a kayak and going on a diving excursion on some of the best dive spots with an experienced local guide provides authentic Raja Ampat experience of a lifetime.

Although the island is most known for its rich marine and coral biodiversity, its landscapes, just like the other islands of Raja Ampat, equally deserves the recognition. Off the virgin shores of the islands, exploring its wilderness by foot opens a whole new realm ready to be discovered. Trekking may be quite an effort to some but it will open great adventures of unearthing the lush forests of Misool that springs mystery and exhilarating experience of the wild.

The Island of Misool possesses many panoramas but the best ones can only be marveled at the peak. Climbing on its towering limestone cliffs will let explorers capture the majestic view of the whole island of Misool. A picturesque view of the heart-shaped turquoise Karawapop Lagoon that is nestled among the steep limestone rock hills will dramatically present itself out of the sea. The Lake of Love, a beauty created by nature, has become a destination that one should visit when traveling the islands of Raja Ampat. A tremendous way to complete your Indonesian voyage is to see the sun rising or setting from beyond the horizon of Raja Ampat.

Raja Ampat ’s majestic beauty flourishes all-year-round and provides a divine experience of a great tropical adventure. Of the islands of Raja Ampat, Misool Island is just one of those many islands that are perfect for explorations; an island worthy of praises and one that exceeds expectations.

Explore some of the richest and most diverse marine habitats on the planet with a stay at Misool Resort. Located on an idyllic island in the far fringes of Indonesia, Misool is a paradise brimming with pristine coral reefs and more exotic marine life than you could possibly count on in a single trip. The resort is exceptionally comfortable, and given its remote location and you can relax and snorkel in absolute peace.

open trip misool

Expect colorful reef teeming with fish large and small, turtles, reef sharks, and a variety of smaller critters. We will also snorkel over manta cleaning stations looking for these gentle giants.

This is the pinnacle of marine life diversity within the Coral Triangle. At its most recent count in 2011 the region of Raja Ampat was recognized to contain 1427 reef fish species, over 600 coral species (75% of the world’s coral species can be found here), not to mention the pelagic life that is abundant in the area.

Because of the amazing conservation efforts by the resort, there has been a huge surge in marine life, and you can witness this on the doorsteps of the resort with a juvenile blacktip reef shark nursery which has naturally occurred.

While this area can have some strong currents, which bring in the nutrient-rich water that helps keep the reef alive and healthy, our local guides will choose protected sites, or appropriate times to enter the water to avoid being in current. If we are ever in a current, we will always float with the water and not try to swim against it. For this tour you should be comfortable in the water with some upper body strength to climb back up the ladder onto the boat.

One of the world’s most remote snorkel resorts – Misool Resort is neatly located on its own private island. The Water Cottages and villas on the North side of the lagoon rise on stilts over a tranquil lagoon, shaded by limestone cliffs – each one with a set of steps that lead you into the water and the house reef which is just a few fin strokes away.

The restaurant located on the north lagoon and is set back from a white sand beach and serves up a variety of western and Indonesian treats throughout the day. Just in front of the restaurant is a blacktip reef shark nursery and sea turtle feeding ground, so as you eat you can watch turtles munch away at the shallow seagrass while sharks pass just beneath where you’re sat.

Review of the Misool Resort: a unique retreat with an incredible underwater world

Thinking of traveling to Misool Resort? Find out if it is the right place for you with the pros and cons of the resort , a review of the diving, and plenty of practical tips (what to bring, what room to choose at Misool dive resort,…)

Misool Eco dive resort review

Arriving at Misool Resort

Misool dive resort is a hard place to reach. It feels a bit like going to the end of the world 🙂

You first need to fly to Indonesia ( Jakarta of Bali) , then Sorong in Papua, and then take a 4-hour speedboat organized by the resort every week.

Flying to Sorong, West Papua

You have several airport options like Jakarta International Airport, Sam Ratulangi International Airport in Manado, Makassar, or the Pattimura Airport in Ambon. Most people who are flying internationally connect via Jakarta.

TIP: At the time of this writing, Garuda allows an extra 15 kg of luggage free of charge specifically for diving equipment. Garuda also tends to be the most reliable airline when it comes to getting to Sorong.

Flights in Indonesia are frequently canceled or delayed, so you might want to spend a night in Sorong just to be safe. Nobody wants to miss their boat because of an airport mix-up.

As I was staying at the Swissbell hotel in Sorong the night before, I was picked up at 8 am by a car organized by the Misool Resort.

If you need to stay in Sorong before or after your Raja Ampat trip, you can stay at the Swiss Bell of the Fave hotel. I stayed at both and found the Fave Hotel cleaner.  If you are spending a day in Sorong, also read my article about what to do in Sorong.

Most packages to Misool resort include a night in Sorong after your trip as most flights out of Sorong depart in the morning

Misool Resort transfer boat ride

We boarded the Misool dive resort transfer boat at 8:30 am for a 9 am departure. The boat is small but comfortable.

misool dive resort

Tip: make sure you have a good breakfast or bring some snacks. It is a 4 hours trip. Only bananas, oranges, and soft drinks were offered so I got hungry by the end of the trip. There is a small shop opposite to where the boat departs where you can buy snacks.

There is a large bathroom in the boat. The downstairs cabin can seat about 40 people There are a few outdoor seats upstairs for about 10 people. The air conditioning on our trip was broken so we kept the windows open. It was not too hot so it was ok. But we got splashed by a few big waves. Think about protecting your electronic equipment. I was not expecting it and my laptop got splashed. Fortunately, not too badly.

TIP: if you get seasick, choose a seat downstairs, at the back of the boat, near the center alley as those will move the least.

The first part of the ride was quiet as we went through a channel.

After 90 minutes, it became quite rough as we exited the channel and were now in the open sea.

Tip: bring some sea sickness tablets if you are prone to seasickness.

After one hour of bumps and splashes, it calmed down considerably.

We could start to enjoy the view of the lime karts and paradise looking beach of Misool.

There was excitement in the air as we arrived at the resort. Just upon landing, we saw sharks in the water!

Misool Eco dive resort review shak

After a quick Covid check on the Misool resort pier, where our temperature was taken and our certificates checked, we were taken to the restaurant for lunch. Lunch was a buffet of Indonesian food with lots of vegetables and chicken.

After lunch, we were shown to our rooms. There was a mixed up with the luggage as we received someone else’s luggage and one of my bags was missing. Fortunately, it was solved within the hour and the holiday could truly start

Misool Eco resort review

Sustainability at Misool Resort.

I start this review with sustainability as this is what makes Misool dive Resort a unique place in the world. Environmental and social sustainability is at the core of Misool Resort. They deserve huge respect for what they have accomplished and by choosing to stay here, you contribute to a very important marine conservation effort. You can read more about that in the sustainability series interview here.

Misool Resort was created on a shark finning factory in 2005. They have leased a large area of 1220 sq km of sea to create and protect a marine reserve. They have established the Misool foundation that is patrolled by local rangers. Misool dive Resort donates 100 USD for every guest to the Misool Foundation.

The area is a no-take zone and has been working extremely well. By 2020, the fish mass was increasing, and more and more sharks and mantas were sighted. This is important as it is one of the most biodiverse areas on the planet!

However, on this trip in January 2021, it was worrying to see many local boats fishing so close to the resort. We were told they were allowed once a year to come and collect giant clams for a festival. During the week, we saw over 50 boats. They were everywhere! We didn’t see a single boat collecting clams but they were all fishing… We saw a few napoleon and groupers with fishing hooks in their mouth right by the resort which was hearth breaking. This is one of the last pristine sea areas on the planet and I hope it can be preserved for future generations.

Besides establishing the Marine protected area, a lot is done for the environment. Solar panels, bio septic tanks, or permaculture garden are examples of how Misool reduces its footprint on its precious environment

Misool Resort also supports the local population by hiring most of its staff from the local villages and creating education programs. They have done a great job of training their staff. Every single staff I have met at the resort was competent, helpful, and very friendly. Don’t go there expecting 5 stars proactive service like the Four Seasons with butlers and bells and whistles. But they for sure provided 5 stars simple, friendly and efficient service. Sue and Mark, the managers in charge was also very kind and dealt with all requests very quickly.

Misool Eco resort review

Overview of Misool Resort

Misool Resort is a small hotel with only 19 rooms spread over 2 locations. The north lagoon where the over the water bungalows are and the south beach with the beachfront cottages.

Besides the rooms, there is a restaurant with a large outdoor terrace and the dive center. The dive center is also the center of activity of the resort. This is where the evening talks take place. It is a great place to chill during the day with comfortable seats and views of the lagoon.

Review of the rooms at Misool Resort

Misool Eco resort review

The rooms are Misool Resort are spread over 2 locations. The north lagoon where the over the water bungalows are and the south beach with the beachfront cottages.

I stayed in the water bungalow number 3 and loved it!

It is a one-bedroom bungalow with a terrace overlooking the lagoon and the nearby islands. The balcony was what made the room special. I spent hours lazing on one of the lounge chairs. The net area over the water was one of my favorite areas to spend time.

The steps going directly from your room to the lagoon are genial. What a pleasure to go directly from your room to the sea for a morning snorkeling.

Note however that the room balcony offers little privacy. The balconies are open on the side so that the nearby rooms and the people on the wooden path can see onto your balcony

Misool Eco Resort review transfer boat

The bedroom itself is quite small but comfortable and well designed. The wooden texture gives it a natural feel. Natural ventilation in the ceiling makes air-conditioning unnecessary but it also allows mosquitos to come in.  So make sure you sleep under your mosquito net and tuck it in.

Misool Eco resort review bungalow 3

Tip: bring plenty of mosquito repellents ( cream and plug in) . They are not provided by Misool Resort. Mosquitos were very aggressive starting at 5 pm.

The bed was very comfortable and the sound of the water under the bungalow and flapping over the limestones cliff made for deep slumbers.

There is a minibar in the room. Soft drinks are complimentary and refilled every day. The Pocari Sweet was a nice touch to rehydrate after diving. Beer and wine are also provided but you need to pay for those.

Misool Eco resort review coffee

TIP: there is no hard alcohol for sale at Misool Resort so make sure you bring your liquor bottles with you or get them from duty-free. If you like good wine, you might also want to bring that with you.

There is also a water gallon in the room which is super convenient. However, the water had a very bad taste to it. I mentioned it mid-week and was told the gallon had been changed. At the end of the week, I removed the cover and saw that the gallon was fifthly and full of Algae… Fortunately, I didn’t get food poisoning from it but this is far from ideal and probably the one big thing Misool Resort needs to improve.

Misool Eco resort review

The bathroom is large and outdoor with a hot water shower. Soap, shampoo, and conditioners are provided.

Misool Eco resort review bathroomoutdoor bathroom

What room to choose at Misool Resort?

The resort has 2 areas. The South Beach and the North lagoon and both are very different.

North Lagoon rooms

The North lagoon hosts the dive center and the restaurant. All the bungalows and villas are connected by a wooden path on stilt which makes it easy to go back to your room between dives and meals.

If you plan to dive, consider bungalows 1 to 5 as they are the closest to the dive center. 1 and 2 are less private as their terrace faces the wooden path and is nearer to the dive center. Bungalows 3, 4, and 5 offers great views. 5 offers a bit more privacy as it is at the end of the path so that would be my first choice.

Villa Tabisasu in that area is also a great option as it offers privacy and is located right on the best area of the snorkeling reef.

TIP: The price difference between the villas and the bungalow is not that high, making the villas a great value.

The other path towards the restaurant leads you to bungalow 6, 7, and 8. This path is busier as it also leads to the 3 villas and the staff villages. People staying in those villas have complained about noise from the nearby staff village and the generators.

South beach rooms

South Beach offers 7 villas and is a great option for families who don’t plan on spending time at the dive center.

From the south beach, you reach the North lagoon and the hotel facilities by a 10 minutes and 100 steps path up which is very scenic but can become tiring if you have to hike it multiple times a day.

In high tide, the resort’s boat can also shuttle you back and forth between the two locations

The last 2 bungalows are right on the beach and would be a good option for people looking for more privacy.

The beach is wonderful with gentle waves making it great for kids to swim.

Some of the higher up bungalows have a nice view of the blue hole. The bathroom in villa Waya Biru looks stunning

There was no internet or phone connection during our stay. We were informed a few days before departure that the satellite internet system of the resort was down and would not be fixed before a few weeks as the needed spare part is stuck in customs.

So if you need internet, bring your own satellite phone or stay somewhere else.

Review of the food at Misool Resort.

Food is served 5 times a day and was generally very good. The restaurant is cute with plenty of breeze facing the North Lagoon

Misool Eco resort review beach

A cold breakfast would be served at 6:30 before the first dive.

A cooked breakfast with eggs and a few other a la carte warm dishes alternating was served around 9:30.

Lunch was served family-style at 1 pm. It was often Indonesian food with vegetables, tofu, tempeh, and chicken. One day we got tortillas and another day we got tuna sushis.

5 pm is tea time with cakes and pastries.

The pastries and bread were delicious. MisoolResort is lucky to have an amazing baker!

The diner was served from 18:30. We could choose between 2 daily main courses or an a la carte menu was always available with a mix of Indonesian and western food ( i loved the pizza!)

Misool Eco Resort review food

The ingredients are simple ( mostly vegetables, chicken, and tofu) but the chef is great and was able to create some very tasty meals. As long as you don’t expect premium food like sirloin steak, cheese, lobsters, or high-end fishes, you should be satisfied with the food.

I was and did put on weight during the week 🙂

Christmas at Misool Resort

I was there for Christmas week and the Christmas diner was a disappointment. Beside a desert table with Christmas cakes, there was no mention of Christmas or special diner. It was vegetarian Tuesday at the resort and so I celebrated Christmas with Tofu, Tempeh, and vegetables ☹

What to do at Misool Resort?

What sets Misool Resort apart from any other resorts in the world is the quality of the underwater life and conservation efforts.

I was therefore surprised that most other guests during our stay were not diving. They still had a great time with plenty of activities to enjoy.

Day trips to other nearby islands were organized every day.

The South beach is a great place to relax with gentle waves great for swimming and a large golden sand beach.

I ended up spending hours reading books on the balcony of my overwater bungalow. I simply loved that place. It was so peaceful and I could sometimes spot turtles or sharks passing by just below my balcony!

Kayaks and paddleboards are available at any time of the day.

Diving at Misool Resort

Misool Eco resort review dive center

Misool Resort set up a no-take protected area which has become one of the best diving destinations in the world.

The diving was spectacular. Between witnessing a sardines hunt to hanging out with 5 meters Oceanic mantas on the magic mountain dive sites, we could not get enough of it.

We saw mantas on more than half of our dives. As our group was well behaved and gave the mantas and their cleaning stations enough space, they would often hang out with us for the whole dive.

TIP: you don’t need to decide how many dives you will do in advance or pre-book everything. Misool Resort was flexible. We would just need to indicate the night before what dive we wanted to join fo the next day

Diving at magic mountain dive site

Magic Mountain is the most famous dive site in Misool and you can see the pictures below

Misool Eco diving magic mountain

Diving at Puri Pinnacle

The highlight of our dives was probably the huge sardines ball frenzy we stumbled upon at Puri pinnacle. Predator fishes, including a school of Mobula rays, were feasting on millions of sardines and other fishes. What an action-packed dive!

Diving organization at Misool Resort

Hotels guests were allocated to one of three boats.

There were 8 guests on our boats so it could feel a bit crowded but the boat was large and comfortable. The design of the 2 ladders at the back of the boat makes it easy to get back on the boat even for people with a mobility issue.

Misool Eco Resort review

TIP: They plan the week so that the dive sites get better and better. So if you are only planning to dive a few days, you are better off skipping the first days and doing most of your dives towards the end of the week.

Our guide, Daddy, was great. He knew the dive sites well, kept a good pace, and could often find small critters for us.

Misool dive operation: 3 things could however be improved:

1) The group size was too big. With 5 or 6 divers per dive guide, it is way above the average group size I have experienced in Indonesia of 2 or 3 divers per dive guide. For our last dive, they added a beginner diver to our group of advanced divers, limiting the depth or types of dives possible .

2) Magic mountain and Boo windows are recognized as the best dive sites in Raja Ampat. Liveaboards are only allowed to dive them once per trip. I was hoping that by staying at Misool Resort, we would get to dive those amazing sites many times. Despite asking for it, we dove magic mountain only twice and Boo window’s only once over the week

3) There is little support after the dives, and you are expected to rinse your own equipment. The water tanks were often empty so we would need to fill them up ourselves every day. Not a big deal as they would fill up in 5 or 10 minutes but a luxury dive center might want to do it for the guests? There was also no water available in the dive center where people are often thirsty after they come back from diving.

It didn’t prevent us from having a great time diving. Sabine, the dive center manager was always smiling and available. She has a great knowledge of underwater life and has tons of really cool anecdotes about fish life to share.

Snorkeling at Misool Resort

I snorkeled every afternoon directly from the resort. I enjoyed exploring the lagoon, the house reef, and the nearby islands.

I normally prefer diving but the snorkeling at Misool Resort was so good that I ended up going again and again. I also enjoyed the freedom of snorkeling alone and being able to go at any time.

Snorkeling at Misool Eco resort

During my first five minutes snorkeling in the water, I saw over 10 sharks, a turtle, a napoleon fish, and plenty of other fishes. This must be the best 5 minutes of snorkeling I have ever done 😊

TIP: people during our stay saw the walking shark while snorkeling at night below the jetty so if night snorkeling is your thing, check under the jetty.

I have not encountered strong current during my stay but would always inform Sabine, the diving manager, that I was going so that someone could keep an eye on me. Sabine was also super helpful to help me plan the snorkel itinerary taking into account the current at any time of the day.

TIP: I saw a box jellyfish and many other jellyfishes while snorkeling. Make sure you bring a rash guard or a wetsuit to protect yourself.

What is the best way to dive Misool? Liveaboard or Misool

The big question on many people’s mind is whether it is better to dive Misool from a liveaboard or from Misool Resort. The answer is: It depends…

I have done 3 liveaboards cruises to Misool. You can read about my liveaboard trips here:

  • Ilike from Sorong to Kaimana trip
  • Ilike from Ambon to Sorong trip
  • Neomi short Misool trip

Both the liveaboard and the resort have been an incredible experience and I recommend them all. Misolol is the ultimate diving destination.  If you can do both, go for it. Depending on what you are looking for a cruise or the resort will be better for you

Pro’s of liveaboard diving

1) If you like to do 4 dives a day, liveaboards are easier as they drop you right on top of the dive sites and you waste less time to get from dive sites to dive sites

2) Liveaboards also offer a wider range of dive sites as you can combine Misool with the Banda islands, Kaimana, or other areas of Raja Ampat. Liveaboards also get to dive Four Kings, an amazing dive site in Misool that Misool Resort doesn’t dive.

3) You get to visit other islands during the surface intervals like the hearth shaped lagoon, the jellyfish lake, or the cave with painting

4) You get a sunset view from the top deck on most evenings. ( Misool Resort faces North East so doesn’t get a sunset view )

5) You can often find last-minute availability ( Misool Resort gets booked up to 18 months in advance so you need to plan ahead if you want to stay there)

6) You meet more people as everyone follows the same schedule and diner are usually served at a communal table

Ilike Liveaboard Indonesia

Pro’s of staying at Misool Resort

1) You contribute to the protection of an important eco-system

2) The rooms are nicer than on most boats. The water bungalows are stunning. And if you get seasick, you can spend every night on land.

3) There are many non-diving activities offered. If you are traveling with children and non-divers, they will have plenty to do

4) The snorkeling around the resort is stunning

5) Misool Resort knows a few manta cleanings stations that they liveaboard don’t dive yet.

6) Honeymooners will have more privacy both in their cabin and at diner where they can get a 2 person table in a romantic setting.

So overall, if you are looking for an intense diving holiday, you will be happier on a liveaboard. If you are traveling with non-divers or want a more relaxed or diverse holiday, you will be happier at Misool Resort.

Review of the Misool Resort:

When’s the best time to go to Raja Ampat?

The diving season in Rajat Ampat is from September/October until April/May.

The best time of the year. If you want to see lots of fishes is November and December. The sea at this time usually is tranquil. Unfortunately , those months tend to suffer from poor visibility. ( but it is not always true. I have been to Raja Ampat in November and had good visibility)

January and February are when visibility is the best. It can be windy, and the sea can be choppy.

Conclusions of the Misool Resort review

I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at Misool Resort. As long as you go with the right expectations, you will be very happy there. It is a very special place. While you can find hotels with better rooms and service in that price range, what makes Misool Resort special is its isolated location in one of the last pristine marine protected areas of the world and its conservation efforts. It was a privilege to stay there. I highly recommend it and look forward to going back there. But you will need to book ahead as the hotel is booked up to 18 months in advance!

Thank you for this thoughtful and thorough review. We are leaving on November 22 and will stay 9 nights in South Beach. Looking forward and a bit anxious about mosquitoes as bathrooms are open. How did you manage? When you say poor visibility, I wonder what that means for you?

Best, Arlene

' src=

South beach has more mosquitos than the lagoon rooms. If you stay there, bring lots of repellents. If it was me, I would even bring some electric mosquito plug ins. Vis in Raja Ampat is umpredicatable and November is quite early in the season. How did it go?

Misool and Wakatobi Snorkeling Trip in Indonesia

A guided snorkeling adventure to two of the world’s most extraordinary underwater wonderlands, february 23 – march 14, 2025 april 11-28, 2025 april 30 – may 18, 2026.

We highly recommend joining this once in a lifetime Misool and Wakatobi snorkeling trip in Indonesia. This extraordinary 18-20 day adventure combines two of arguably the best snorkeling destinations on Earth, in one amazing trip, with some itineraries offering a couple days of relaxation in beautiful Bali in the middle. Misool is in Raja Ampat, and is our favorite snorkeling destination ever. And we have also visited Wakatobi, which is southeast of Sulawesi, and can highly recommend it for its very healthy reefs with lots of fish, interesting walls, and fantastic resort, with perhaps the best snorkel boats we have ever been on.

Beautiful purple anemone and fish you could see on the Misool and Wakatobi snorkeling trip

Both of these resorts are within the famed geographic area known as the Coral Triangle, home to the greatest marine biodiversity in the world. You will see more fish and coral species on this trip than anywhere else.

The very remote Misool Eco Resort is the crown jewel of the southern area of Raja Ampat. This resort supports incredible conservation efforts that protect a 500 square mile Marine Protected Area and No Take Zone.

Wakatobi is in the geographical center of the Coral Triangle, off southeastern Sulawesi Island. The Wakatobi National Park is renowned for having some of the richest, healthiest and most bio-diverse reefs to be found on Earth.

Where Are Misool and Wakatobi and What Is the Itinerary for This Trip?

Misool and Wakatobi are in Indonesia, and both are within the Coral Triangle. Misool Eco Resort is on a small island in a very remote southern section of Raja Ampat. Wakatobi Resort is on a small island southeast of Sulawesi.

For this trip you will book your international flight into Jakarta. Once you’ve arrived you will meet your group and guide, and have a rest in a room in a Jakarta hotel. Your group will then take an overnight flight to Sorong.

Once in Sorong you will be transferred to the Misool Eco Resort on their own large and comfortable enclosed motor boat. You will spend seven nights at Misool, before heading back to Sorong, for one more night there.

You will then fly from Sorong to Bali. You will have either a one, two, or three night stay in Bali.

Next you will fly to Wakatobi where you will spend seven more nights.

Finally you will fly back to Bali, your final destination. You can head home from Bali, or extend your trip.

Misool’s reefs are absolutely brimming with life. Thanks to their conservation efforts it is one of the rare places where sea life is not only flourishing, but has increased in health and diversity in recent years. The Misool Marine Reserve protects around 300,000 acres (nearly 500 square miles) of remote islands and the underwater marine life.

In 2020 we experienced likely the best snorkeling of our lives at Misool, and we started donating monthly to their conservation foundation, because we were so impressed with the good they are doing. It is extraordinary! Many of the underwater pictures in this section we took during that trip. Watch the video below, to get a sense for what Misool is all about.

“There is greater biodiversity — that is to say, a larger number and greater diversity of fish, coral, and mollusks on these reefs than anywhere on earth. A single football field-sized patch of Misool’s reefs has nearly five times the number of coral species as the entire Caribbean Sea.” – Marine biologist Dr Mark Erdmann

Three Bumphead Parrotfish in Misool

Because you are staying at Misool Eco Resort you will have the opportunity to snorkel right from the beaches, to your heart’s content. As you can see in the picture below there is a north lagoon, a south lagoon, and the reef to either side of the dock to snorkel, with neighboring Marsemol Island also available. We found the house reef snorkeling to be outstanding. There are areas full of healthy corals, with fish in the thousands. Seeing small reef sharks and turtles is nearly guaranteed. The house reef alone will keep you happy for many days.

Aerial view looking down at Misool Resort

In addition to unlimited house reef snorkeling, you will have 12 snorkel boat sessions to nearby reefs. Night snorkels will also be on offer and are worth a try as you may get to see the wonderful walking sharks.

Hard corals and tunicates with many small reef fish in Misool

The snorkeling topography in Misool generally consists of a shallow shelf of reef right next to an island shoreline, that gradually gets a bit deeper, and then in most places the bottom drops off quickly into much deeper water. So on nearly every snorkel you have the opportunity to see shallow areas packed with corals and small reef fish. You can also snorkel over the drop-off, with vertical walls covered in colorful soft and hard corals and tunicates. Over the drop-off and out in the blue water you have the chance to see large schools of fish, huge Napoleon Wrasses, sharks, and turtles.

School of Batfish in Misool

Misool easily has more fish than any other location we have ever snorkeled. Fish populations, variety and sizes are simply beyond description. There were times right on the house reef where we would watch a school of thousands of beautiful fusiliers cruising by that never seemed to end. From endless clouds of little reef fish, to larger schools of much larger fish like jacks or trevallies and Bumphead Parrotfish, to gorgeous anemones and their resident anemonefish, snorkeling in Misool is like being in a National Geographic or Blue Planet special.

And nearby there are a few manta ray cleaning stations where it is common to see these giants.

Manta Ray cleaning station Misool

Coral health and variety was astounding overall. The bright colors and variety of hard and soft corals were a joy to see.

In addition to fish and corals, you can also see beautiful nudibranchs, turtles, eels, octopus, squid, cuttlefish, seahorses, and the gorgeous giant clams, night snorkeling with walking sharks, and the many giant manta ray encounters.

Colorful soft corals, leather corals, and tunicates in Misool

Your snorkel boat in Misool is a spacious fiberglass speedboat with enough room to easily store snorkeling equipment. The boats do not have a toilet onboard but do offer a full canopy for sun protection and a ladder to help exit the water.

Beautiful Misool Accommodations and Fantastic Food All Included

You will be spending seven nights at Misool Eco Resort. The resort was built entirely with reclaimed wood using their own saw mills on site. Your group will be staying in the Water Cottages around the North Lagoon. That means your room is right over the water, with your own steps down into a shallow lagoon with great snorkeling. And when you have a desire to hang out on a beach, you can venture over to South Beach. It is one of the most picturesque beaches we have ever been on.

Your room will have air-conditioning, an open air private bathroom with hot water, and a veranda with lounges.

Misool Water Cottage in the evening

All food is included, and served at the beach-front restaurant. You can expect Asian and Western cuisine, with an emphasis on fresh, local, organic produce, and fish line-caught outside their no-take zone. They can accommodate dietary needs and restrictions with advance notice. There are four meals served a day (second breakfast anyone?), plus snacks, and afternoon tea. Alcohol is an extra cost item, and pork is not served.

Misool Resort Meal

You may also choose to partake in the resort’s wellness spa treatments at The Lookout or in your own room. They offer massage and beauty treatments that feature their signature products, created every morning in their kitchen.

Relax and Replenish in Bali

After your time in Misool and one night in Sorong, you will spend one, two or three nights in Bali, depending on your date and itinerary.

The February 2025 date will have three nights at a resort still to be decided, with a half day land tour.

The April 2025 date will have one night at the Bali Airport Novotel.

The 2026 date will have two nights at a resort still to be decided, with a half day land tour.

This will be a time to relax in your room or at the resort’s pool, enjoy the wonderful and varied restaurants, and the surrounding forests or white sand beach.

What Is Wakatobi Like?

After a refreshing break in Bali you are off for the last stage of this once in a lifetime snorkeling adventure, Wakatobi!

The resort is located within the Wakatobi National Park, a UNESCO Marine Biosphere Reserve. It’s the third largest marine park in Indonesia, and has been described by Jacques Cousteau as “Underwater Nirvana”.

Wakatobi Resort beach and dock aerial view

Situated at the geographical center of the Coral Triangle, the waters in this archipelago are among the most bio-diverse in the world. Wakatobi has high numbers of coral and fish species, so the reefs are a joy to explore.

open trip misool

Wakatobi Resort is an ideal base for a snorkel tour. You have unlimited access to the house reef during your stay and two 105-minute boat snorkeling sessions per day for six days.

The house reef offers a combination of shallow corals and sea grass areas, and you can also swim right along the top where the wall drops down into the deeper blue. The corals right along the top of the wall are shallow and a joy to snorkel. And the wall is covered in beautiful corals and sponges.

You can see larger fish schools and creatures along the wall edge. We saw lots of turtles, both Green and Hawksbill here. And the shallow corals near the drop-off are full of smaller tropical fish schools. Blue-spotted Rays are common, as are eels. We also found Stonefish here, which was a first.

We also found a number of Leaf Scorpionfish around Wakatobi and lots of beautiful nudibranchs.

Snorkeler over a shallow reef at Wakatobi

Surely one of the most impressive house reefs for any resort location in the world, this magnificent wall and reef top offers flexible snorkeling opportunities throughout the day and night.

Like Misool, your time at Wakatobi will be packed with snorkeling opportunities.

Unlimited House Reef Beach Snorkeling Wakatobi has one of the best house reefs for snorkeling anywhere in the world. And you will have unlimited access to that house reef right off the beach in front of your Ocean Bungalow.

12 x 105-Minute Boat Snorkel Trips Although the house reef is magnificent, there are many more reefs you will explore close by. So your group and leader will head out on a snorkel boat twice each day to explore neighboring reefs. Wakatobi has the nicest boats we have ever snorkeled from, with full shade, a big bathroom, and excellent ladders.

Night Snorkeling You will also have the opportunity to do some night snorkeling at the resort around the wharf.

Wakatobi Accommodations and Dining

Ocean Bungalows at Wakatobi

You will have seven nights at the Wakatobi Resort which is completely secluded. You reach it by both a charted flight from Bali, which lands on a private airstrip, followed by a short speed boat ride.

More About Ben and Our Partnership

Ben and Nicole in Alor

Ben (pictured with Nicole) is our friend and snorkeling trips partner. He and his team are based in the U.K. and have over 20 years of experience guiding in Asia and beyond. He has been running his own business since 2010 and is primarily offering guided snorkeling trips, but he started with diving. He began offering snorkeling specific trips because he was aware that snorkelers often get the short end of the stick when thrown in with divers. He and his team love the freedom and low stress of snorkeling, and are very aware of the different needs of snorkelers versus divers, in terms of the reef depth, and calm surface conditions needed.

From our experience going on two of his snorkeling trips we found them very well organized, the guides were fantastic and very helpful, and the underwater experiences were exceptional. Snorkeling groups really get the benefit of all of Ben and his guides’ years of experience in the water, and with different resorts and liveaboards.

All of his trips are small groups of 12-18 guests, or with a similar ratio of snorkelers to guides. These are premium trips including nearly everything you will need, accommodation, meals, transportation, and more.

His company is licensed and insured. Barring extreme circumstances they do not cancel trips.

Travel info

How do i fly to indonesia.

From Europe: The only direct flight is by Garuda straight from Amsterdam to Jakarta, once or twice per week. Or check Turkish Airlines or Qatar and similar Arabic airlines that many fly with. Finnair sometimes has good options to the SE-Asia hubs.

From US: Over Japan and when Garuda. Over China or other SE-Asia hubs as example South Korea, Singapore, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur with several options to Indonesia. Over Philippines and maybe Guam?

From Australia/New Zealand: Over Bali or Jakarta. Quantas from several cities, Garuda fly from Sydney and Melbourne. Some more airlines available.

Garuda, Indonesia’s best airline has just now also started up a direct flight from Bali to Sorong, Thursday, Friday and Sunday for from 2,0 million IDR. But no direct flight on the return, only by a stop in Makassar.

Is it possible to avoid the huge Jakarta airport and big city?

It’s possible to avoid huge Jakarta completely and fly direct to Makassar from Kuala Lumpur (Air Asia and Batik Air) or from Singapore (Batik Air and Scoot/Singapore Airlines). Stay at a hotel in Makassar (the Ibis Budget airport hotel is less good, noisy!). Or better stay 2 nights in close by Rammang Rammang, see FAQ below.

NOTE! Makassar have the only morning/day flights further to Sorong (Batik Air 09:00 and Lion Air 10:50). Batik Air is little more reliable than Lion Air.

Or fly straight into Bali if possible as from Australia, Qatar and maybe also Europe? From Bali, Garuda has now 2 days per week a new direct night flight to Sorong from 2,0 million IDR but not any direct flight on the return.

Alternative is go by Garuda, Citilink, Batik Air, Lion Air by Makassar from Bali or Jakarta. Continue with Batik Air or Lion Air from Makassar to Sorong. Same for return. Longer and more stops, probably more expensive. Check this up as nice if you want to stay in Bali and/or Makassar as Rammang Rammang a couple of days.

Another alternative is fly from Singapore to Manado (Scoot/Singapore Airlines) and it’s an early morning flight further to Sorong (Lion Air 07:00, NOTE sometimes been cancelled) after staying a hotel night there. Manado is also a good place for a longer stop as they have tourist destinations around Manado.

A last different alternative is to go by Moluccas on the way to Sorong. From Jakarta and Makassar you can fly direct to Ambon. All are night flights except one expensive morning flight by Garuda from Jakarta to Ambon. From Ambon there is a short afternoon flight by a propeller plane further to Sorong by Wings Abadi Airlines under the Lion Air group. So a different stop is possible here around Ambon or maybe go to Banda Islands, the famous “Spice Islands” that is very beautiful. When we talk about a longer stop but please check its season so the ferries goes to Banda Islands first!

Do you have a recommendation of a better stop on the way to Sorong?

Instead of make a stop in Jakarta we really recommend a stop to recover and get climatized in the amazing Rammang Rammang karst mountains, the worlds third biggest karst area on land (after China and Vietnam) that is close and perfect on the way to Sorong. It’s only 45 min to 1 h from Makassar airport (UPG). Plus you get also the advantage to get the only morning/day flights further to Sorong. So no second red eye flight to Sorong as all other alternatives. Make a long stop enough for exploration/recovery as at least 2 nights there. Maybe paddle a local colourful canoe (peadle boat) on the small river between the huge karst mountains and the many rice fields? Or do trekking in the area or just relax after the long trip? Google Rammang Rammang and check the reviews on Tripadvisor for Rammang Rammang Ecolodge.

See more in above FAQ, “Is it possible to avoid the huge Jakarta airport and big city?”

How do I fly to Sorong?

Many participants take the direct night flight from Jakarta by Garuda, Batik Air or Pelita Air (new, cheaper) that fly out just after midnight, 00:10, 00:30 and 00:50. NOTE: It’s the next day’s date to book!

Less participants take the 1 stop flight over Makassar with Batik or Lion Air as they also start after midnight and have a stop of around 2 hours in the middle of the night in Makassar is not so fun even if it’s a little cheaper.

All these flights are so called “red eye flights” and after making a night flight from Europe or US you could arrive very tired to Sorong.

So we recommend a stop on the way, maybe in Jakarta or maybe fly via Makassar during the daytime and stay there at a hotel or at Rammang Rammang area and experience more of Indonesia? Plus you have the only day flights further to Sorong? Read more in above FAQ “Do you have a recommendation of a better stop on the way to Sorong?”

From Makassar airport (UPG) there are two morning flights further to Sorong Batik Air 09:00 and Lion Air 10:50. And you know you can fly direct to Makassar from the hubs Kuala Lumpur or Singapore? See more on above FAQ: “Is it possible to avoid the huge Jakarta airport and big city?”

Garuda, Indonesia’s best airline has just now also started up a direct night flight from Bali to Sorong, Friday and Sunday for from 2,0 million IDR. But no direct flight on the return, only by a stop in Makassar.

It’s also an early morning flight available from Manado to Sorong (Lion Air 07:00, NOTE has sometimes cancelled!). Possible after staying a hotel night there.

What are the best ways to fly to Sorong?

We have a very good recommendation of make a stop on the way to Raja Ampat to avoid the terrible red eye night flights from Jakarta to Sorong and go by only morning flight to Sorong instead. Try to get time adapted instead of the opposite! You could even avoid busy boring Jakarta and fly over Kuala Lumpur, KL, or Singapore which could be cheaper, especially at Christmas time. So you can fly to Sorong and not pass Jakarta. See above FAQ “Is it possible to avoid the huge Jakarta airport and big city?”

Another alternative is to fly to Denpasar, Bali and from Bali fly to Makassar and from there continue to Sorong. Or go direct to Sorong from Denpasar, Bali to Sorong by the new Garuda night flights 2 days per week but there is no direct return. So you can also avoid Jakarta by flying straight to Bali and not only over Kuala Lumpur, KL, or Singapore. You could check that too. There could also be an option flying from Manado to Sorong. Manado in North Sulawesi have now flights again from Singapore. Manado had earlier international flights some airports in China and maybe Japan. But we think most of them are gone now.

Jakarta has both direct night flights to Sorong (cheapest new Pelita Air) and non direct night flights with one stop in Makassar late at night. Only red eye flights to Sorong from Jakarta. No morning or day flights from Jakarta.

What are the flights from Singapore to Sorong?

There are four alternatives to get from Singapore to Sorong:

  • Singapore-Jakarta-Sorong (last leg direct night flight or 1 stop in Makassar) Many airlines both international, Singapore/Scoot airlines or Indonesian airlines, if one airline the whole way but at least 1 stop in Jakarta, Garuda or Batik Air
  • Singapore-Makassar-Sorong, first Singapore/Scoot or Batik Air airlines, later Batik Air or Lion Air. Have to stay one night in Makassar, a nice retreat from the airport 45 min-1 hour. If one airline goes the whole way but 1 stop in Makassar, Batik Air. Shortest and recommended alternative, see more below
  • Singapore-Manado-Sorong, first Singapore/Scoot airlines, later Lion Air. Not bad but could be more expensive and 0700 flight from Manado so have to stay one night in Manado.

Singapore-Bali-Sorong, many airlines both international, Singapore/Scoot airlines. Or straight to Bali if possible as from Australia, Qatar and maybe also Europe? From Bali, Garuda has now 2 days per week a new direct night flight to Sorong from 2,0 million IDR but not any direct flight on the return. Alternative is go by Garuda, Citilink, Batik Air, Lion Air by Makassar. Continue with Batik Air or Lion Air from Makassar to Sorong. Same for return. Longer and 2 stops, probably more expensive. Check up but nice if you want to stay in Bali.

How do I book domestic flights inside Indonesia?

Domestic flights don’t have to be booked long time in advance as prices are more stable. A good site we use for see all available flights and airlines at the same time with same prices as individual airlines have and that has better service is:

https://en.tiket.com/

That is also available in English. You can also book flights from Kuala Lumpur or Singapore there. Another similar website is:

https://www.traveloka.com/en-id/

This website our Indonesian team uses the most. Tiket.com has good service as they even called up a Swedish participant when a flight was changed. This many Indonesian airlines don’t do even if you made the booking at their own site. For example, Lion Air has terrible customer service and are very difficult to reach. Some participants also have problem buying the airline tickets direct at the domestic airline websites. If so try Ticket.com or Traveloka.com.

Which are the best and safest Indonesian domestic airlines?

Garuda is the safest and most reliable Indonesian airline but also the highest price. Garuda is the only Indonesian airline approved to fly into EU aerospace. The low price airline of Garuda, Citilink is also OK but is not flying to Sorong. Starting prices for Garuda are IDR 3,600,000.

Batik Air is Lion Air group’s premium airline and they are a better rated airline than Lion Air even they are in the same company group. We use Batik Air ourselves. Lion Air is a low price airline that sometimes have cancelled flights. Starting prices for Batik Air are IDR 2,899,000 and Lion Air at IDR 2,600,000.

As of 3rd December 2023, Pelita Air has opened a new route from Jakarta-Sorong with night flights every day of the week. They are also the cheapest option starting from IDR 2,599,000. The company is under Pertamina group, the huge oil and gas company of Indonesia so it should be rather good. They have new planes, keep the schedules but the food on the planes is less good.

We want to buy a bottle of alcohol at Duty Free when we take off. Can we take the alcohol (sealed) in our hand luggage?

Yes you are allowed to carry 1 liter in your cabin luggage on domestic flights (1 unopened bottle of liquor, wine as long it is sealed and within 24 hours from the time of buying. Plus 4 liters in your check in luggage).

How much money should I bring? Are there any ATMs in Sorong?

Any recommendations for accommodations in sorong.

There is the 4-star Swiss-Belhotel  where you can get the smallest Deluxe room option for roughly IDR 900.000 (prices may fluctuate depending on demand and different booking sites). Swiss-Bel has a swimming pool and a very good breakfast buffet. The hotel is close to us and the ferry. NOTE if you arrive early morning you cant check in until maybe 12:00 as normal is 14:00. Checkout is 12:00 but they maybe could be nice and let you stay 1 or 2 hours more. Early check in is possible for half room price but can only be ordered at the reception the same day. If you return to the hotel after the trip you can store extra luggage there. Google “Swiss-Belhotel Sorong”. We can help you book the hotel room and we also offer a Sorong package with all taxi transports, hotel, all meals and activities. See in our price information.

We have at 1st floor, big entrance, 2 office rooms, 1 kitchen, 1 dinner room. We have at 2nd floor, 1 small kitchen, 1 all room and 4 guest rooms. 2 bedrooms are for 2 or maybe 3, as 2 of the bunkbeds has a draw out bed with same IKEA mattress in these 2 little bigger rooms. So these could take 3 persons but it’s a little tight. We have one smaller bedroom for 2 persons and one family bedroom for 4 maybe 5 persons if take in one extra bed, with one extra room outside and a huge balcony. All on our 2nd floor.

Location: https://maps.app.goo.gl/3upoQPBkyY32XV456

Of course there are other places to stay at in Sorong as the new Aston hotel and the nearby Fave hotel (both close to the airport) but we have picked these three options for convenience as its close distance to the ferry.

If you need taxi from/to the airport and any of these accommodations we have a driver, Abdul. He is good English speaking and he could pick you up or leave you for the normal taxi price of 100 000 IDR and in cash only.

What can I do in Sorong?

You can visit the Sapta Ratna Pagoda Buddhist temple (IDR 10.000 entrance fee), visit Pasar Remu market, see the fishermen sell their catch at Pasar Jembatan Puri (Jembatan Puri Market) and visit the mangrove park.

How safe is West Papua for foreigners?

In Misool you need not worry about your safety as it is very safe and we don’t meet many people on our trips.

In both places the locals, especially children might call out to you and maybe even go up to you for a little chat.

How conservative is the area in West Papua?

West Papua and Indonesia in general (aside from Aceh) is not a very strict Muslim area. Female participants don’t have to cover more than at home, and our Muslim kayak guides are used to ”Swedish nudity” already. Please do not change clothes and expose yourself on the boat or at the beaches. Bikini/shorts are ok while camping and in Sorong normal summer clothes are fine just like at home.

How can we get around in Sorong?

In Sorong we use yellow taxis for transport. The local transportation apps Gojek and Grab also work if you have them. We can assist you in getting transport from the airport to your hotel.

When is the ferry going to Misool?

The ferry to Misool departs once a week on Monday at 10 pm and arrives at the port in Yellu at 7 am . But at times it may be delayed due to weather. On the ferry you can purchase snacks and drinks.

What happens if there are no ferries going to Misool?

The ferry might stop operations during new years but we can hire speedboat for the transport to Misool.

Where can we stay in Misool?

Homestay to choose in 12/5 days Medium trips

  • Overwater bungalows with fans only in Inner archipelago, Yapap homestay, closer to Yapap area. Restaurant over the water. No beach/no land as all on stilts!
  • Alternative overwater bungalows with fans only in Inner archipelago, Yamini homestay, closer to Dafalen area Restaurant over the water. No beach/no land as all on stilts!
  • Alternative homestay on an Island closer to Yellu village (ferry from/to Sorong), Binomat homestay. Has a beach with sand but a little swampy as also mangroves around. Good coral reef outside the very long jetty. One big main building with 8 rooms with 2 beds each with its own toilet/shower. Only fans in the room.
  • Medium budget homestay with AC bungalows Small AC bungalows over water in the Middle archipelago, Nut Tonton homestay. Restaurants on land and they have small beaches. Currents/waves sometimes around the small island so better snorkeling in the Island chain crossover by boat (extra cost)
  • More fancy high budget AC bungalow rooms on land in the outer islands homestay, Panun Paradise Island homestay (our base) is maybe the most beautiful homestay island in Misool. A turtle beach island there they go up and lay eggs that later hatch etc. Also some peaks to hike and you can walk over to the other side of the island with 2 beaches (further one may need a machete!)
  • More fancy high budget AC bungalows over water in the inner islands homestay, Lalelkai homestay. It’s also possible to take instead a room in their big main building with 6 rooms with bunk beds. Shared toilet/shower. Shared AC unit between the rooms. Low budget rooms. Lalelkai have their own dive center but no sand beach and less good possibility to walk around the island. Restaurant over the water.

What are the boat transports in Misool?

We have partnered with a local boatman for transports within Misool in their longboats. The costs for transport are covered in the trip prices, but there are additional fees for additional uses of the boat.

What should I bring?

Some of the things you should bring are:

  • Your personal toiletries & medicine
  • Hat & Sunglasses
  • Snorkeling gear
  • Water bottle or pouch, preferably more than 1L but not bigger than 2 liter pouches if fit our PDF’s external pouch.
  • Coral and marine safe sunscreen (no Oxybenzone, Octocrylene, Octinoxate, Parabens, Nanoparticles)
  • Coral shoes and flip flops

What is the best apparel for the trip?

Dry fit clothes are best, preferably long sleeves to protect against sun and jellyfish. It is also recommended to wear leggings for the same reason. It’s also important to bring a hat and sunglasses.

For footwear, water shoes like KEEN water shoes (Newport H2 best) work for the entire trip. Our guests also bring coral shoes too, though we’d recommend bringing sandals for the camp and homestays and shoes for the jungle.

In the camp and for sleep you can wear a t-shirt and shorts for comfort. But we recommend using longer sleeved and long pants for the jungle to reduce the risk of mosquito bites.

What kayaking equipment does Millekul Adventure provide?

We also have different types of paddles.

  • Point 65 Super Tourer
  • Point 65 Super Tourer II
  • Point 65 Nigel Foster GS
  • Gearlab Akiak Inuit paddle
  • Epic Mid Wing paddle
  • Kajaksport Sea Touring

We also have pumps, PFD, kayak covers, spray skirts, paddle leash, seat pads, among other things.

Read more details about Equipment here. Handling of equipment Kayaks must not be dragged through the sand or rocks. When landing on a beach they must always be lifted. Paddles should not be slammed against stones or be used as a stick to get the kayak free floating. Ask for help instead as breaking equipment is expensive!

May I borrow equipment?

Trip conditions, what is the weather like in misool, what is a typical kayaking day like.

Kayak to lunch at around 12 o’clock but we have already made several stops as peak hikes, cave walks, walk to jellyfish lakes, or admire several highlights from the kayak etc. So it’s not kayaking all the time as we use the kayaks to explore like using a bike in a new city! So we make many stops in the kayak on the water or on the shorelines etc. We can also connect the kayaks and jump in the sea from the kayaks for snorkelling!

We have a large cockpit room in the kayaks where you can exercise the legs while kayaking. Or you put the legs on deck to get another position for your body etc.

At 12 o’clock a long lunch is normally 2 hours at a beach stop or a jetty. If we do good snorkelling we also do that at lunch. So say it’s one hour from the time we arrive to all having eaten lunch, after we go to rest or do activities such as walking or snorkelling (if possible).

Back in kayaks at around 2 o’clock. So again we go by many highlights or island stops so not continuous kayaking. Kayak to latest 5 o’clock, normally to 4 o’clock when we arrive back at our camp or homestay.

Dinner at 7 o’clock. Social talk after and in some evenings night kayaking around 1 hour at 8 o’clock.

Go to bed at 9 o’clock or stay up longer and be social!

It’s not 2 to 3 hours non stop kayaking before lunch and 2 to 3 hours non stop kayaking after lunch.

The only day that it’s more kayaking is the second paddling day of the long supported trip and when you can step up in the boat after lunch approx half way if it’s a boat supported trip. But it’s a long cave walk in the middle of the paddling before lunch and after lunch it’s possible to go by boat or make several beach stops if you talk to the guides.

Do I have to be an experienced kayaker to join this trip?

Anyone can join our trips! Even beginners never sit in a kayak before.  With the use of tandem kayak with a friend or partner it’s even easier. We also adjust the trip to suit your level and as we have several guides we can adapt for several levels. If no friend or partner you can also use a tandem kayak with a guide! Kayaking is a low intensity activity like walking so you don’t need to be in a great shape.

You can read a review on Tripadvisor here of an intermediate paddler who had her stepmom who was a beginner on a long and unsupported trip and it worked!

Read more about Millekul Adventures on Tripadvisor (External link)

Can families make the trips or do you make special family trips?

What activities can i expect from the trip, what's the difference between a boat supported and unsupported trip.

A supported trip is where you are supported by the boat, especially during the transport days where the boat will bring all the stuff between the accommodations.

An unsupported trip is where we have no boat support. This means we have to carry all our equipment and provisions for the trip in the kayaks. This also means simpler camping, longer distances and little sower kayaks.

See more under each kind of trip what the difference is of the boat supported and the unsupported version.

Connectivity & Power

Is it wifi at the ferry or at the homestay during the trip.

No, there is no wifi at the ferry or during the rest of the trip in Misool.

Is there good 4G/LTE signal at the islands of Misool?

There is a good signal in some villages and the largest 4G/LTE mast gives good coverage South of the island chain we kayak in. But we paddle almost only on the North side of the island chain where the mountains take away the signal. And the bandwidth is limited so rather bad capacity all the time. In Panun the signal is working but with a lower capacity. The network is often down for hours up to several days sometimes so it’s not even possible to make calls and send text messages.

Is there a good mobile signal during the kayaking trip in Misool?

Over 90% we are in signal shade or in the outreach of the signal during our kayaking trip. There is a signal in Panun, the 2 peaks we hike and during the 2 village visits.

Is there internet in Misool?

Can i make a call or send a message by millekul satellite phone during the kayaking trip.

Yes. However, we charge $2 per minute for calls and $0.50 per SMS, with a limit of up to 142 characters per message.

Can family contact me while on the trip?

Here’s a list of our satellite phone numbers: Satphone 1 : +8821650617175 Satphone 2 : +8821650617178 Satphone 3 : +8821650617187

What kind of electrical plugs do they use in Misool homestay? Or do I need a travel adapter on the trip?

They use normal EU plugs so no travel adapter is needed.

During the kayaking trip does the homestay have electricity and which voltage?

The homestay we use during the trips has a generator between six o’clock in the evening to at least six o’clock in the morning. The voltage is 220 V. There is also electricity in the cabin on the night ferry.

Can I charge my mobile phone or small camera during the camping part during the trip?

Yes you can charge your mobile phone or cameras that support USB charging during the camping as we have a large power bank in each tent with USB A ports. So no need to bring your own power banks.

Can I charge my drone batteries during the trip?

You can charge drone batteries during the night at the homestay we stay at. You can’t charge drone batteries while camping.

Accommodation

What accommodations are provided during camping, can i have my own tent and room in the ferry and homestays.

Yes, it is possible but limited by availability. Please do tell us in advance so we can book the rooms and pack the tents accordingly. If not then for the tents it is a shared tent for two people and the rooms are also shared in the homestay with one room or double room bungalow fitting up to four people. For your own cabin at the ferry it’s an additional cost of 500 000 IDR to Misool and back if an AC cabin.

What foods will be provided in the homestays?

If you are doing the Long and Medium start trips you will begin in Panun Homestay. In Panun breakfast and lunch will be provided by the homestay and you can expect an Indonesian breakfast (usually rice, fried noodles and eggs) with some cakes and fruits on the side, and for the dinner it will be a more robust meal where you can expect fish (grilled, fried and/or stew),  squid, vegetables, soup and rice as it’s not a meal without rice in Indonesia.

When we are in the Inner archipelago homestays during the middle of the Long trip and start of the Short and Medium end trips, the breakfasts are provided by us. We provide cereal, granola and muesli with milk. To complement the breakfast we also serve freshly baked cakes. For dinner the homestay provides the meals. The dinners will be comprised of fish, vegetables and rice.

We use Lyofood for lunches

Food & Drink

Are food and drinks provided during the trips.

Cooked food (most of the time breakfast and dinner only as we are out paddling in between) and drinks in the homestay are provided by the homestay.

During camping and when out paddling we provide freeze dried food from Lyofood – the highest quality food from a small family company.

Read more about Lyofood here: www.lyofood.com – external link.

We also provide an assortment of fruits, snacks, beverages (coffee, tea, and milk) during the trip.

Where does the drinking water come from?

The drinking water comes from the best water plant in Misool which is on par with the best filtered drinking water quality in Sorong. Before every trip we order a couple of gallons based on how many guests there are, so you need not worry about lack of water on the trip.

What is Lyofood?

Lyofood is a brand of freeze dried food made in Poland. It is made with 100% natural ingredients and has a long shelf-life despite not having any preservatives. There are organic dishes, vegan and vegetarian, lactose free or gluten free dishes too. They are healthy, lightweight, and fast to prepare making them perfect for our trips. All you need to do to prepare the food is; open them, take the oxygen absorber packet out, add water according to specifications, stir and then wait for 10 minutes.

Other than Lyofood, what other types of food can I expect on the trip?

During camping we eat Lyofood for breakfast, lunch and dinner, which might get a little boring so we often prepare fruits and boiled eggs to complement our breakfasts and if we first always try to get fresh fish from fishermen for dinner. If there are no fish we have Lyofood.

In the homestays you can expect to eat a lot of fish prepared in many different types of ways with rice as the main carbohydrate. They also provide different types of vegetables so you can expect to eat a healthy and balanced meal. In addition to that, for breakfasts in the homestay we provide a western breakfast consisting of cereal and granola with milk and juice, boiled eggs and fruit.

You will also get hard-bread with tubed cheese and salami for snacking anytime.

Can I buy my own snacks to bring on the trip?

Snacks like chips and biscuits are already included in the trip so you won’t have to buy more. Though if you’d like to bring more that’s up to you.

Can I request beverages such as soda and alcoholic drinks to be bought for the trip?

Yes, you may at additional cost. We can buy the beverages before the trip if you request it. We also have cooler boxes that we can fill with ice to keep the beverages cool throughout the trip, also at additional cost of buying and transporting the ice from the villages.

If I have a specific diet can the meals be customized to fit?

Is cutlery provided.

In the homestays, yes. During camping, while we do bring some spoons with us, it is highly recommended that you bring your own cutlery.

Can I fish during the trips?

Yes, you can except in the homestay areas. You can only catch and release there. Half of our single kayaks have a fish rod holder so you also can do trolling while kayaking at deeper sea.

Health & Safety

What vaccinations should i have to take on a kayaking trip in misool.

Read more information about vaccinations here . (external link)

Should I take precautions against malaria?

We have never had a case of malaria contracted on our kayaking trips (over 350 participants and guides made trips since 2017). The only resort in Misool which has been running since 2008 with several hundreds of guests per season has also never had any malaria cases. But malaria is endemic to Papua. We recommend that you always sleep under a mosquito net, wear light-coloured clothing, cover up during evening and early morning hours, and use an insect repellent if necessary (we have one natural and very effective mosquito repellent included in the medium and long trips). As for malarial prophylactics, we suggest you consult with your doctor.

Do I need to bring any personal medicine?

Will we encounter any animals that pose a threat to us on the trip.

We have eco friendly insect repellent to ward of insects (only included for medium and long trips).

Do you have any treatments for jellyfish?

Yes, everytime we go out we bring hot water and vinegar for jellyfish treatment. We also bring burn aid for relief.

Is it safe to kayak in Misool?

During our season in Misool we don’t get huge swells and a lot of the time we are paddling in closed off and protected areas. There might be some moments for example during some crossings that we have to make where there is the potential for some strong currents and swells. In that case, the guide will take a safer route, or you can request a boat transport when we are at a beach if using the boat supported trips.

Sustainability

How sustainable is the trip.

As our team is composed of people who love nature we aim to be as sustainable as possible and reduce our impact on the environment.Making efficient use of the boat transports, reducing the usage of single use plastics, using biodegradable items whenever possible (this includes our soaps, shampoos, sunscreen and insect repellent which are all environmentally friendly), cleaning up the sea and beaches when possible are among the things we do to ensure a sustainable and environmentally friendly trip.

Read more about our efforts for sustainability.

What are the things we should keep in mind to avoid harming nature during the trip?

When snorkeling we do not touch any animals or corals.

When kayaking or walking during low tide we avoid the corals and when walking we only step on sand, rocks or dead coral.

When caving we do not leave anything inside and do not touch any active forming stalagmites and stalactites.

When snorkeling in the jellyfish lake we make sure we don’t have any sunscreen or any type of lotions on us. We also avoid the use of fins and make sure we swim as gently as possible as to not harm the jellyfish.

Gifts & Tipping

How much should i tip.

Tipping is not mandatory. But, if you are happy with the service of the guides and the experience you had. The guides will be happy with 1 million IDR each and you can tip as low as 800 000 IDR. For kayak assistants and boatmen the half and 250 000 IDR  to homestay staff and boat assistants. But there are no fixed amounts that you should tip the team. Just tip as you see fit.

How will the tips be divided amongst the team?

Should i bring gifts for the children in the village if so what do they need.

It’s optional but recommended to bring gifts for the children when visiting the village. The teachers mentioned that they need books, especially children’s books in English because they still have a lack of English education in the villages.

Can we rent kayaks if we are not a booking customer?

No, we do not rent or lend out any equipment outside of booked trips.

Can we make a day trip?

Where can i put the bags that i'm not bringing to misool.

You can put your bags in our guesthouse.

This trip is rather pricey. What makes this trip a trip worth taking?

We have already tried our best to ensure the best prices for our guests, especially compared to our competitors (that have 100 EUR or more per kayaking day). But we can assure you that this trip is definitely worth taking.

You will see things here that are unique or hard to find in other places. The pristine water, diverse underwater life, colorful corals, the flocks of birds hunting, the very rare stingless jellyfish lake, are among the things that make this trip worth it. Not only that, but our guides are also great companions on your trip. You will find that we will forge a good bond between each other as the trip progresses. We often part as friends with a lot of our guests!

We say these things not just because we want you to come here (well, we do, but that’s not really the point) We say these things because we believe that we will give you a trip that you will look fondly back on. An adventure of a lifetime!

The square is the picture postcard of Russian tourism, so make sure to bring your camera when you visit! No matter the season, or the time of day, it’s delightfully photogenic!

It’s also home to some of Russia’s most distinguishing and important landmarks, which we’ve made sure to include further down in this itinerary. It’s an important center of Russia’s cultural life and one of the top places to visit in Moscow!

In 1990, UNESCO designated Russia’s Red Square as a World Heritage site. Visiting this historic site is a true bucket-list event and essential addition to your itinerary for Moscow!

Day 1 / Stop 2 – The Moscow Kremlin

It’s the best known of the Russian Kremlins – citadels or fortress’ protecting and dominating a city. During the early decades of the Soviet era, the Kremlin was a private enclave where the state’s governing elite lived and worked.

The Kremlin is outlined by an irregularly shaped triangular wall that encloses an area of 68 acres! The existing walls and towers were built from 1485 to 1495. Inside the Kremlin museum complex, there are five palaces, four cathedrals, and the enclosing Kremlin Wall with Kremlin towers.

The Armoury Chamber is a part of the Grand Kremlin Palace’s complex and is one of the oldest museums of Moscow, established in 1851. It showcases Russian history and displays many cherished relics. Definitely make sure to check out this museum while you’re here!

The Moscow Kremlin

The churches inside the Moscow Kremlin are the Cathedral of the Dormition, Church of the Archangel, Church of the Annunciation, and the bell tower of Ivan Veliki (a church tower).

The five-domed Cathedral of the Dormition is considered the most famous. It was built from 1475–1479 by an Italian architect and has served as a wedding and coronation place for great princes, tsars, and emperors of Russia. Church services are given in the Kremlin’s numerous cathedrals on a regular basis.

The Grand Kremlin Palace was the former Tsar’s Moscow residence and today it serves as the official workplace of the President of the Russian Federation (Vladimir Putin seems to have bagged that title for life) .

Insider Tip: The Kremlin is closed every Thursday! Make sure to plan this stop on your Moscow itinerary for any other day of the week!

Day 1 / Stop 3 – Lenin’s Mausoleum

It’s located just a few steps away from the Kremlin Wall and is one of the most controversial yet popular Moscow attractions!

Admission is free for everyone, you’ll only need to pay if you need to check a bag. Before visitors are allowed to enter the mausoleum, they have to go through a metal detector first. No metal objects, liquids, or large bags are allowed in the mausoleum!

Lenins Mausoleum

Expect a line to enter the building, and while you’re inside the building, you’ll be constantly moving in line with other visitors. This means you won’t be able to spend as long as you’d like viewing the mausoleum, but you’ll still be able to get a good look. Pictures and filming while inside the building are strictly prohibited, and security guards will stop you if they see you breaking this rule.

The mausoleum is only open on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday – unless it’s a public holiday or a day scheduled for maintenance. The hours it’s open for each day are limited, make sure to check online before you visit to make sure you can fit this into your Moscow itinerary for that day!

Located in the Red Square, the ornate 16th-century St. Basil’s Cathedral is probably the building you picture when you think of Moscow’s unique architecture. Its colorful onion-shaped domes tower over the Moscow skyline!

The cathedral was built from 1555-1561 by order of Tsar Ivan the Terrible. It was designed with an iconic onion dome facade and enchanting colors that captivate all who see it. Fun fact: If you’re wondering why Russian churches have onion domes, they are popularly believed to symbolize burning candles!

This iconic cathedral has become a symbol of Russia due to its distinguishing architecture and prominent position inside the Red Square. It’s one of the most beautiful, wonderful, and mesmerizing historical cathedrals in the world!

St. Basils Cathedral

The interior of the church surprises most people when they visit. In contrast to the large exterior, the inside is not so much one large area, but rather a collection of smaller areas, with many corridors and small rooms. There are 9 small chapels and one mausoleum grouped around a central tower.

Visiting the inside is like walking through a maze, there are even small signs all around the cathedral tracing where to walk, and pointing you in the right direction! The walls are meticulously decorated and painted with intricate floral designs and religious themes.

The church rarely holds service and is instead a museum open for the public to visit.

Insider Tip: During the summer months the line to go inside the cathedral can get quite long! Make sure to arrive early or reserve your tickets online to guarantee quick access into the cathedral!

A massive domed glass ceiling lines the top of the building and fills the interior with natural sunlight. There are live plants and flowers placed throughout the mall that give the shopping complex a lively and cheerful feel! A playful fountain sits in the center, further adding to the malls inviting a sense of wonder and amusement!

The GUM department store opened on December 2, 1893. Today, it includes local and luxury stores, including Fendi, Louis Vuitton, Prada, and many more! There are numerous cafes, restaurants, and even a movie theater inside!

GUM Department Store

For a special treat, head into Gastronom 1. This 1950s-style shop sells gourmet food items, like wine, freshly-baked pastries, cheese, Russian chocolate, and of course, vodka! Also, be on the lookout for a bicycle pedaling ice cream truck with an employing selling ice cream!

The ambiance is simply amazing, a trip to this idyllic shopping mall is an absolute must on any Moscow itinerary!

The Stone Flower Fountain was also built in 1954 and is worth checking out. The centerpiece of this large fountain is a flower carved from stones from the Ural Mountains! Along the side of the fountain are various bronze sculptures.

You will find many people zipping around on rollerblades and bicycles across the large area that the venue covers. It’s also home to amusement rides and carousels, making it the perfect place to stop with kids on your Moscow itinerary! Godzillas Hostel

Godzillas Hostel is located in the center of Moscow, just a short walk from all the major tourist attractions and the metro station.

  • Towels Included

Cosmonautics Museum | Alexander Garden | Ostankino Tower | Izmaylovo District | Soviet Arcade Museum

Now that we’ve covered what to do in Moscow in 2 days, if you’re able to spend more time in the city you’re going to need more attractions to fill your time. Here are a few more really cool things to do in Moscow we recommend!

Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics

  • Hear the timeline of the ‘space race’ from the Russian perspective
  • This museum is fun for both adults and children!
  • Admission is USD $4.00

The Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics is a museum dedicated to space exploration! The museum explores the history of flight, astronomy, space exploration, space technology, and space in the arts. It houses a large assortment of Soviet and Russian space-related exhibits, and the museum’s collection holds approximately 85,000 different items!

Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics

The museum does an excellent job of telling the full story of the exciting space race between the USSR and the US! It highlights the brightest moments in Russian history and humanity and is very interesting and fun for all ages!

If you’re a fan of space or just curious about gaining insight into Russia’s fascinating history of space exploration, make sure to add this to your 3 day itinerary in Moscow!

The Alexander Garden

  • A tranquil place to relax near the Red Square
  • Green lawns dotted with sculptures and lovely water features
  • The park is open every day and has no entrance fee

The Alexander Garden was one of the first urban public parks in Moscow! The garden premiered in 1821 and was built to celebrate Russia’s victory over Napoleon’s forces in 1812!

The park is beautiful and well maintained with paths to walk on and benches to rest on. The park contains three separate gardens: the upper garden, middle garden, and lower garden.

The Alexander Garden

Located in the upper garden, towards the main entrance to the park is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier with its eternal flame. This monument was created in 1967 and contains the body of a soldier who fell during the Great Patriotic War!

The park stretches along all the length of the western Kremlin wall for about half a mile. Due to its central location in the city, it’ll be easily accessible when you’re out exploring The Red Square.

It provides a bit of relief from the city’s high-energy city streets. Bring a picnic lunch, go for a walk, or just sit and people watch, this is one of the best Moscow sites to wind-down and relax!

Ostankino Television Tower

  • Television and radio tower in Moscow
  • Currently the tallest free-standing structure in Europe
  • Make sure you bring your passport when you visit, you can’t go up without it!

For spectacular views of the city, make sure to add the Ostankino Television Tower to your itinerary for Moscow! This impressive free-standing structure provides stunning views of the city in every direction. The glass floor at the top also provides great alternative views of the city!

Ostankino Television Tower

It takes just 58 seconds for visitors to reach the Tower’s observation deck by super fast elevator. The tower is open every day for long hours and is a great site in Moscow to check out! There is even a restaurant at the top where you can enjoy rotating views of the city while you dine on traditional Russian cuisine or European cuisine!

The tower is somewhat of an architectural surprise in a city that is not known for skyscrapers! To see the city from a new perspective, make sure to add this stop to your Moscow itinerary!

Izmaylovo District

  • The most popular attractions in this district are the kremlin and the flea market
  • Outside of the city center and easy to reach via metro
  • Most popular during the summer and on weekends

Travel outside the city center and discover a unique area of the city! The Izmaylovo District is a popular destination for locals and tourists alike, and one of the coolest places to see in Moscow! The two main attractions we recommend checking out are the Kremlin and the flea market.

The Izmailovo Kremlin was established as a cultural center and molded after traditional Russian architecture. This colorful complex is home to several single-subject museums, including a Russian folk art museum and a vodka museum!

Izmaylovo District

Next to the Kremlin is the Izmailovo open-air market, which dates back to the 17th century! The market is connected to the Izmailovo Kremlin by a wooden bridge. Pick up all your Russian souvenirs here, including traditional handicrafts, paintings, books, retro toys, and Soviet memorabilia!

You will find many hand-made and hand-painted options available at higher prices, as well as mass-produced souvenir options at lower prices!

Museum of Soviet Arcade Games

  • Closed on Mondays
  • Filled with old arcade games that visitors get to try out!
  • The museum also includes a small cafe and burger shop

For something a little different, check out the Museum of Soviet Arcade Games! The museum features roughly 60 machines from the Soviet era, including video games, pinball machines, and collaborative hockey foosball! The machines inside the museum were produced in the USSR in the mid-1970s.

Museum of Soviet Arcade Games

The best part is, most of the games are still playable! Purchase tickets and try the games out for yourself! The museum also has a neat little screening room that plays old Soviet cartoons and an area with Soviet magazines! This unique attraction is a fun addition to a 3 day itinerary in Moscow, and an attraction that all ages will enjoy!

Whether you’re spending one day in Moscow, or more, safety is an important thing to keep in mind when traveling to a big city! Overall, Moscow is a very safe place to visit. However, it is always recommended that tourists take certain precautions when traveling to a new destination!

The police in Moscow is extremely effective at making the city a safe place to visit and do their best to patrol all of the top Moscow, Russia tourist attractions. However, tourists can still be a target for pickpockets and scammers.

Moscow has a huge flow of tourists, therefore there is a risk for pickpocketing. Simple precautions will help eliminate your chances of being robbed. Stay vigilant, keep your items close to you at all times, and don’t flash your valuables!

If you’re planning a solo Moscow itinerary, you should have no need to worry, as the city is also considered safe for solo travelers, even women. Stay in the populated areas, try and not travel alone late at night, and never accept rides from strangers or taxis without a meter and correct signage.

The threat of natural disasters in Moscow is low, with the exception of severe winters when the temperature can dip below freezing! Bring a good, warm jacket if you visit in Winter.

However, please note that Russian views on homsexuality are far less accepting than those in Western Europe. Likewise, Non-Caucasian travellers may sadly encounter racism in Russia .

Don’t Forget Your Travel Insurance for Moscow

ALWAYS sort out your backpacker insurance before your trip. There’s plenty to choose from in that department, but a good place to start is Safety Wing .

They offer month-to-month payments, no lock-in contracts, and require absolutely no itineraries: that’s the exact kind of insurance long-term travellers and digital nomads need.

Moscow Court Rejects Evan Gershkovich’s Appeal, Keeping Him in Jail Until At Least June 30

TOPSHOT-RUSSIA-US-JOURNALIST

(MOSCOW) — Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich will remain jailed on espionage charges until at least late June, after a Moscow court on Tuesday rejected his appeal that sought to end his pretrial detention.

The 32-year-old U.S. citizen was detained in late March 2023 while on a reporting trip and has spent over a year in jail, with authorities routinely extending his time behind bars and rejecting his appeals. Last month, his pretrial detention was continued yet again — until June 30 — in a ruling that he and his lawyers later challenged. A Moscow appellate court rejected it Tuesday.

In the courtroom on Tuesday, Gerhskovich, wearing a white T-shirt and an open checked shirt, looked relaxed, at times laughing and chatting with members of his legal team.

His arrest in the city of Yekaterinburg rattled journalists in Russia, where authorities have not detailed what, if any, evidence they have to support the espionage charges.

Gershkovich and his employer have denied the allegations, and the U.S. government has declared him to be wrongfully detained.

Analysts have pointed out that Moscow may be using jailed Americans as bargaining chips in soaring U.S.-Russian tensions over the Kremlin’s military operation in Ukraine. At least two U.S. citizens arrested in Russia in recent years — including WNBA star Brittney Griner — have been exchanged for Russians jailed in the U.S.

In December, the U.S. State Department said it had made a significant offer to secure the release of Gershkovich and Paul Whelan, another American imprisoned in Russia on espionage charges, which it said Moscow had rejected.

Officials did not describe the offer, although Russia has been said to be seeking the release of Vadim Krasikov, who was given a life sentence in Germany in 2021 for the killing in Berlin of Zelimkhan “Tornike” Khangoshvili, a 40-year-old Georgian citizen of Chechen descent who had fought Russian troops in Chechnya and later claimed asylum in Germany.

Russian President Vladimir Putin, asked this year about releasing Gershkovich, appeared to refer to Krasikov by pointing to a man imprisoned by a U.S. ally for “liquidating a bandit” who had allegedly killed Russian soldiers during separatist fighting in Chechnya.

Beyond that hint, Russian officials have kept mum about the talks. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov repeatedly said that while “certain contacts” on swaps continue, “they must be carried out in absolute silence.”

Gershkovich is the first American reporter to be arrested on espionage charges in Russia since September 1986, when Nicholas Daniloff, a Moscow correspondent for U.S. News and World Report, was arrested by the KGB.

Daniloff was released without charge 20 days later in a swap for an employee of the Soviet Union’s U.N. mission who was arrested by the FBI, also on spying charges.
