So besides the big parks, what ARE the other things to do in Orlando?

As a starting point, we knew of dozens of hidden treasures throughout Central Florida. Old Florida attractions that were the places to visit on an Orlando vacation long before Walt Disney World, Universal Studios and SeaWorld came to town. Many are still open and inviting guests for a fun day trip from Orlando!

These Orlando attractions don’t have the budgets to compete with Walt Disney World, Universal Studios and SeaWorld . As a result, our friends and guests had never heard of many of these Orlando attractions, and often they had no idea these places even existed. But we know them well, and these Orlando attractions are eager to entertain you as many have done for decades.

Friends also asked us about things to do in Orlando that you couldn’t do any place else, or at least where they came from. So, we would take them on an old-fashioned Southern swim picnic! There they could swim, snorkel and kayak in crystal clear fresh water bubbling up from natural springs. Or we took them to observe nature from a sternwheeler , airboat , antique train or zipline .

They were excited to catch their own shrimp , or pick their own oranges , strawberries, blueberries and peaches .

Many times, they just wanted to find a pristine beach away from the crowds for a day. Or get tickets to local arts performance, or a UCF football, Orlando Magic, Orlando City Soccer or major football bowl game, but couldn’t get the best seats that we could.

On other visits, we took them to tour local wineries or to explore the shops and cafes of historic towns . Some wanted to visit local breweries or chocolate factories here. As a result of these trips and visits, we learned so much more ourselves about all the things to do in Orlando that even some other locals were not aware of.

We also turned into experts of a lot of local history. We became well-versed in all the presidents who vacationed in Orlando and their stories. We learned all about the areas celebrities and movie productions in Central Florida, and the story of how Orlando was Mr. Rogers’ neighborhood for a period of time .

And of course, there are magical things to do in Orlando during holidays!

We shared plenty of fun things to do in Orlando during other holidays too! There were fun times at local pumpkin patches or tours of the dark side of Orlando around Halloween. We visited the best places for an Easter Egg hunt in the spring and took in views of holiday fireworks above the heads of dolphins on the fourth of July.

Something a lot of visitors to Orlando are not aware of is the amount of excellent fully guided package tours, action adventures, airboat rides, sporting events, animal encounters....the list goes on. Many of these tours involve leaving Central Florida and heading South away from the theme parks. Luxury motor coach transportation (or mini bus for smaller groups) is included in a number of tours, as are appropriate meals en route. Apart from the convenience of not having to drive yourself, package tours often include elements that a visitor probably would not have booked on their own. So, why not be a little adventurous? It’s certainly something different from spending the whole day at one park or location, and these packages really are excellent value for money.

Whether you’re interested in a new way of visiting your favorite theme park or a fabulous departure from fabricated Florida,  Orlando  is overflowing with tour and excursion options both on and off the path. Learn the ins and outs of theme parks with special VIP tours at Walt Disney World and Universal Orlando . Leave the theme parks behind and get a taste of old Florida with an airboat tour at Wild Florida or be a wildlife trainer for a day at Gatorland . If you’re really looking for a out-of-area experience, take a ride on a hot air balloon. Painted Horizons offers sunrise hot air balloon rides. If you're more comfortable with your feet on the ground, take a walking tour through some downtown Orlando bar. Just be warned, this tour has spirits of many kind, if you catch our drift. There's also food tours, scenic boat tours, kayak and paddleboard tours, plenty of ways to see the City Beautiful. 

Universal Orlando VIP Tour Experience

You don't have to be a celebrity to experience a Universal Orlando Resort VIP Tour Experience. Your day will include a Universal Orlando expert touring you around Universal Studios Florida or Islands of Adventure, or both parks. The experience includes exclusive backstage access, insider info and (best part) enjoying the attractions without waiting in line. The VIP Experience includes multiple parties in your group, but if you want to really impressive your date, go for the Private VIP Experience. American Ghost Adventures

Enjoy some spirits with your spirits. This three-hour tour includes ghost stories and maybe even some ghostly encounters. The first hour is spent socializing with your group while hearing a few spooky tales. Then the tour will visit three or four different "haunted" bars. This is a walking tour through downtown Orlando so wear appropriate footwear. You'll also have a chance to test out a K2 Meter and attempt to detect spirits you won't find in a glass. Guests must be 21 or up to enjoy these ghostly encounters. Appetizers and drinks are a separate cost from the tour fee. A minimum of six people are needed for the tours.

Recommended for Tours and Excursions because : Amateur ghost hunters and history buffs will dig AGA's various tours, which are infused with a hearty helping of both.

Walt Disney World 50th Anniversary Tour

Walt Disney World officially turned 50 Oct. 1, 2021, lucky for you, the celebration will last more than a year. Take advantage while you can and experience the 50th Anniversary Tour. A VIP Tour Guide will escort your party, up to six people, on a magical day through the parks. You'll visit a few of your favorite attractions, but you'll also get some behind-the-scenes secrets. Your tour will start at one of the first resorts on site, Disney's Contemporary Resort, where you'll learn some Disney history and kickoff your day with a champagne toast. Then a private charter will take you to Magic Kingdom. Lunch is at Be Our Guest Restaurant and then it's off to EPCOT where your get a special treat at the new Space 220 Restaurant and a coveted ride on the recently-opened, Remy's Ratatouille Adventure.

Every wanted to an animal trainer? Not just for any animal. We're talking about alligators. The Train-for-a-day program at Gatorland gives you a peak into what it's like working with dangerous animals. You'll get an up-close experience with baby gators to some of the parks largest alligators and crocodiles. This two-hour tour begins at 8 a.m. and is only available to those 12 and older. The tour group is limited to five people so you'll have plenty of attention. Admission to the park is included in the tour so you'll be able to explore this central Florida institution that has been around since 1949.

Recommended for Tours and Excursions because : There aren't too many places you can learn to be an alligator trainer.

A.D.'s expert tip : Be warned: Your clothes will get dirty. Wear closed-toed shoes and nothing too baggy.

Wandering Palm Food Tour

Eat good food, support local businesses and even learn a little Orlando history in the process. Come hungry because Wondering Palms Food Tours promises there will be plenty to eat. The tours are in different parts of Orlando including Ivanhoe Village, the Milk District and more. These are walking tours, ranging between ¼ a mile to two miles, that happen rain or shine so dress appropriately. You can pick one of the preplanned tours, or tell them what you like and they will plan for you. A guide takes you from restaurant to restaurant sharing fun facts along the way.

Winter Park Scenic Boat Tour

If the tours have been going on since 1938, you know they must be good. The Winter Park Scenic Boat Tour takes guests through takes in narrow canals in this quant city located 10 miles from downtown Orlando. Tours are everyday of the week (minus Christmas Day), with one tour leaving at 10 a.m. and another tour leaving at 4 p.m. The hour-long excursion is aboard a pontoon boat and can accommodate up to 18 people. Guests will learn the history of Winter Park while viewing wildlife and a variety of foliage. You'll also pass by exquisite estates in this city founded by wealthy easterners in the 1800s.

Painted Horizons Hot Air Balloon Tours

Take a scenic hot air balloon ride above central Florida. Flights are available seven days a week, weather permitting, and occur early in the morning when the winds are most favorable. Riders must be at least 8 years old and need to be able to get in and out of the basket unassisted, as well as stand the entire flight. Flights are usually about one hour, but the entire experience is closer to three hours. You may be wondering how high you'll go. Well, that depends a lot on wind and weather, but you could get as high as three thousand feet. Balloons won't go up in winds higher than 10 mph.

Peace of Mind Kayak Tours

This local outfitter runs tours throughout Central Florida, even out to Merritt Island, but in-town excursions through the Winter Park chain of lakes take intrepid explorers straight through the majestic landscape and history of this lovely little town. They're happy to give you an escort, but with the handy map they are happy to provide: it's wholly unnecessary, allowing you and your partners in paddling to slip unencumbered through the waterways, guided by easy-to-read, hand-drawn maps. Navigate through lush foliage, beneath towering cypress and past the area's magnificent estates on a two-and-a-half-hour journey. Wild Willys was a great Airboat ride through the marshes. Saw several gators and lots of wildlife. The guide was knowledgable about the area and very friendly. The people inside were also very friendly and knowledgable. Definitely recommend.

The one-hour airboat ride was perfect. We saw a variety of wildlife. The speed of the boat (what I really came for) was good, some fast times, some slow times. I chose the 9am time to avoid the sun and heat, and that was perfect too. I highly recommend Wild Willy's.

How long do orders take to process?

Orders typically take 1-2 Business Days to process. You’ll receive an email confirmation once your order has been received. A final confirmation will be sent with your ticket voucher once the booking is confirmed.

Can I change or cancel my order?

Most of the activities on our website can be changed or canceled up to 24 hours before the scheduled departure date. However, a select few are non-refundable and non-transferable. Please refer to the Trip Details , or contact us for questions regarding a specific activity.

Do I need to bring a photo ID?

Yes. The person who placed the order must be present on the day of the activity. The credit card holder is required to show a valid photo ID and a matching ticket voucher. Otherwise, entry will not be permitted.

Can I book a trip for someone else?

If you would like to book a trip for someone and you will not be present on the day of the activity, you must submit a Credit Card Authorization Form and a copy of your valid photo ID and credit card for verification.

What should I bring on the day of my tour?

We recommend packing a day bag with your swimsuit, towels, a change of clothes, snacks, water, and sunscreen. Closed-toed shoes may be required for certain activities.

What time do I need to be at the pickup spot?

Please arrive at least 10-15 minutes before the pickup time indicated at checkout or on your confirmation email/tour voucher. 

Can I park my car at the pickup location?

Yes. Most of the pickup locations allow free car parking and are easily distinguishable. If you park at any of the Walt Disney World Resorts or Universal Orlando Resorts, there will be an additional fee for parking.

What if I need help on the day of the trip?

If you need help on the day of your scheduled activity, or you need to contact the tour operator for any reason, please contact the phone number listed on your ticket voucher. 

Are tour vehicles wheelchair accessible?

Wheelchair- and scooter-accessible vehicles are available upon request. Any passenger requiring an ADA-accessible vehicle must inform us at least 2 Business Days prior to departure. 

What languages are available?

All of our tours are guided in English. Other languages may be available upon request for groups. Please contact us to inquire about tours in other languages.

90-Minute  Tour – With this tour, you’ll be able to explore further into the Headwaters, Everglades, and Lake Tohopekaliga for more alligator encounters and opportunities for taking photos.

Two-Hour  Tour – We’ll venture into all the places other alligator tours just can’t go with this extended airboat ride. Nature lovers and photography enthusiasts have ample time to appreciate the wildlife and views from the airboat.

Had a fantastic 1hr ride out with Capt Scott what a charmer very funny and knows his stuff for sure, had a wonderful exhilarating ride out into the swamps even had a beer at no charge if you are there in the area its a well worth trip.

We had a boat tour with Captain Chris and honestly if I had the time this holiday I would go again! It was amazing! The marsh was picturesque and full of wildlife. We were even lucky enough to see a few alligators! Our Captain was great ; very friendly and informative! An absolute 10/10.

Tour Tioga Gran Fondo

  Registration

Each rider should pre-register at: https://www.bikereg.com/toi-fondo . Registration includes a swag bag, a T-shirt, and a free meal. There will also be registration the day-of the event but swag and T-shirts will not be guaranteed to day-of registrants. Music on the lawn post ride will also be included! Riders with dietary needs should contact Tioga Opportunities, Inc. at least 3-weeks prior to the race; otherwise please bring your own post-ride food options.

Event Details

Small town charm. Big time fun.

Tioga derives from the Haudenosaunee and means “at the forks”, describing a meeting place. That is just what the Tour Tioga Gran Fondo embodies: a place to meet, celebrate, and have fun! This event boasts three routes including 10, 30, and 62 mile loops around the hills of Tioga County featuring stunning views of the Susquehanna River, picturesque farmland, and includes some of the most beautiful small towns in New York State. You’ll have the chance to ride, fully supported, over some of the most scenic country roads in the state. Craft breweries? Check. Restaurants? Check. Farm-tours, historic downtowns, museums, B&B’s, a river-walk, hiking, and dice rolling at the casino are all part of the local experience. The area is the Southern Gateway to the Finger Lakes where you get your fill of authentic, small-town charm with all the big-time fun of a sanctioned event. There will be premium swag, chip timing, roving-mechanical support, and police control, but that’s not what this event is really about. While this unique Gran Fondo holds its own against any other ride in the country due to its amazing routes, the best reason to sign up is the support it provides to Tioga Opportunities, Inc., a community-action non-profit agency that provides services to residents of Tioga and surrounding counties.

Packet Pickup

Packet pickup will occur the morning of the race. Pickup location is Pavilion #3 at Hickories Park, Owego, NY 13827. You must check-in in person, and you must have a valid photo ID. We recommend that you come early so that you have extra time to prepare for the race.

Timing Chips and Bib Numbers

All timing chips and bib numbers will be included in your registration packet. Chip timing and scoring is provided by TopView Sports. Bib numbers must be mounted where they are visible and easily readable. Timing chips are disposable and should be disposed of post-race in garbage cans.

Preparing to Ride

As you prepare for your ride after picking up your packet, please follow the below rules and recommendations:

• Wearing a helmet is mandatory.
• Wearing your bib number is mandatory. It must be visible at all times.
• Timing chip is required to be included in official results. For best accuracy, please wear your timing chip on your ankle.
• Please be aware, staging for the race start is in an active public park. Please be aware of your surroundings and please be courteous to other users of the park.

Please be aware, this event is taking place in a public park. Every effort has been made to plan this event on a low traffic day but other activities are occurring at the park on event day.  Please be courteous to other park users.

Start Time & Location

The race start will be in front of Pavilion #3 in Hickories Park (right where packet pick-up occurs).

All riders will be staged by course length.

ALL RIDERS MUST CROSS THE OFFICIAL START LINE. Participation will be verified by chip read at the start. Starting without crossing the start line will result in disqualification.

Aid Stations

There will be 3 aid stations along the 62-mile course; 2 on the 30-mile course; and 1 on the 10-mile course. Each aid station will be staffed with volunteers and will have access to EMTs and mechanical assistance, food, and water.

There are bathrooms located next to Pavilion #3 in Hickories Park. Each aid-station will have bathrooms.

Finish Area

The finish line will be the same as the start line, in front of Pavilion #3. Upon reaching the finish line, riders will be directed through the line back to Pavilion #3 to return their timing chip. Your meal bracelet can be redeemed for a great meal! Music and food can be enjoyed on the lawn in front of the bandshell at the rear of the park.

If family and friends have come to join you for the post-ride celebration, meals may be purchased at Pavilion #3 for an additional fee.

Results and Prizes

Results will be posted by Top View Sports on the website results page. Top finishers in each competition category will be invited to the bandshell for presentation.

• You must obey traffic laws. This is not a closed course. You must stop at lights and stop signs. Think Safety First . Be respectful of others on the road. Never cross the center-line of the road.
• Do not ride through any intersections without obeying traffic laws. When you come to a stop sign or signal, slow down, stop, and be safe.
• Cross all railroad tracks at a perpendicular angle or walk bike across tracks. Many tracks at NOT perpendicular to the road.
• Lost items: Tioga Opportunities, Inc. is not responsible for lost or damaged items or for anything left at aid stations or at the start/finish. Volunteers will do their best to help but cannot be responsible for personal items.
