Experience Panama City Like A Local

I’m Joey, an expat and local blogger in Panama City, Panama. I’ve decided to go from writing about Panama City to actually showing people the ins and out of this hot metropolis. I don’t like to refer to what I’m doing as a “tour” but more of an experience.

panama city panama food tours

What we’ll do

Our day starts in the historic Casco Viejo neighborhood at a trendy rooftop where everyone in the group will get to know each other. I’ll give you the quickest history lesson on Panama City and how it’s changed throughout its development before we start our adventure.

We will then walk a few blocks to one of the most luxurious hotels in the neighborhood to try a street food delicacy gone gourmet.

Next, we’ll head to Santa Ana, the most vibrant part of the city where locals still live. We will visit my friend’s chocolate shop where you’ll get to try some unique treats, take photos in front of colorful street art, and walk down Panama City’s only pedestrian avenue to buy fresh ingredients for our mojito-making workshop later on.

From here, we are going to ride the underground metro to the city center to explore the laid-back Via Argentina neighborhood. While here, we’ll be eating at an old-school restaurant to try classic Panamanian food with a twist.

For our last stop, we are GOING UP to a rooftop bar for a mojito-making workshop where you’ll get to make your own cocktail while watching the sun go down over the city and try fresh ceviche.

The cost to go on the tour is  $79 / person with a maximum of 8 people and will last approximately 4 hours . The cost includes a guided tour of Panama City, 4 food & drink stops, transportation costs during the tour (bus, metro & Uber rides), and umbrellas in case it rains. If you are booking a solo tour, you may be combined with another solo traveler or small group, but there will always be a maximum of 8 people to keep it intimate. Please let me know if you have a larger group than eight people and we might be able to accommodate everyone but I prefer to maintain the groups as small as possible. To avoid the worst heat of the day the tours begin at 3:00 pm because this is when the city starts to cool down.

panama city panama food tours

While the cost of the tour is $79, most people on my tour end up saving that much money by the end of their trip by learning the local secrets of where to eat, drink, get around, and not get ripped off. This is a great tour on the first day of your trip so that you can use your new local knowledge for the remainder of your stay.

If you’re ready to begin your experience, BOOK NOW  or send me an email to [email protected] to coordinate.

Where We Meet

The tour meets on the rooftop of  Tantalo Hotel in Casco Viejo (4th floor) at the scheduled time (can vary) on the day you booked. Feel free to arrive early at Casco Viejo and walk around before the tour if you have time. The endpoint of the tour is in the financial district where you will easily be able to get an Uber or taxi back to your hotel.

panama city panama food tours

How much time should I set aside for the tour?

Approximately 4 hours.

How do we get around during the tour?

We do a lot of walking, but we will also utilize different forms of the city’s transportation options to get to certain spots (bus, metro, Uber, or taxi). The cost of transportation is covered during the tour.

Do I need to be super fit for this tour?

You do not need to be super fit but we typically walk 3-miles during the tour (with breaks in between), so you need to be able to cover this much ground.

How much does the tour cost?

The cost is $79 / person. This includes a guided tour of Panama City, sampling local food & drinks, transportation costs during the tour (bus, metro & Uber rides), and umbrellas in case it rains.

Can I bring my kids on the tour?

It’s not recommended to bring kids on the tour since we will be walking a lot in very hot and humid weather, eating local food they may not like, and visiting bars. If you would like to bring a kid, it’s still full price and required to book a private tour.

Do we eat during the tour?

We will typically spend the day sampling local food, drinks, and treats and you’ll most likely be full by the end.

How many people are on each tour?

The tours are conducted with a minimum of 1 person and a maximum of 8 people. If you have a bigger group, we might be able to accommodate everyone, but we prefer to keep the groups as small as possible. Sometimes I will combine groups (a group of 1 and a group of 3 for example), but it will always be a maximum of 8 people.

What do I need to bring for the tour?

Just wear comfortable clothing and sneakers/trainers (remember we walk a lot!). If possible, please try to avoid bringing large cameras since we will be going to some of the more local/gritty areas of Panama City. And please bring water because it’s hot!

Where do we meet and at what time?

The tour meets on the rooftop (4th floor of Tantalo Hotel in Casco Viejo at on the day you booked. Feel free to arrive early at Casco Viejo and walk around before the tour if you have time. The endpoint of the tour is in the financial district.

How can I reserve my spot on the Panama Detour or get more info?

The Best Panamanian Food in Panama City

Cover for article on the best Panamanian food in Panama City.

Good News and Bad News About Panamanian Food

When I moved to Panama City in 2011, I was thoroughly disappointed by the Panamanian food. In general, it sucks.

That's the bad news.

The good news is it doesn't all suck. There's enough deliciousness hidden amongst the gleaming skyscrapers and crumbling apartment blocks of the nation's capital to trick a visitor into believing Panamanian food is on par with Mexican or Peruvian. Well, almost. You just have to know where to go.

That's what I'll share with you here: Where to go to get the best Panamanian food in Panama City.

Optional: Make it a Day Tour!

If you’re really hungry for Panamanian food, it’s possible to visit them all these places in one day. But even then you'll probably need someone to share with. The bonus of doing this all in one day is it'll give you a gastronomical tour through all the most interesting parts of Panama City.

The "tour" starts and ends in El Cangrejo, the best area of the city to stay in. It's safe, walkable (at least by Panamanian standards), and right on the excellent Panama metro, which is the fastest and cheapest (35 cents!) way to get across the city and avoid its crazy traffic.

I hope you're hungry.

Click any link below to jump right to the details of whichever of these tickles your fancy.

  • Famous Cheese Empanadas and Chicheme from Artisana
  • Tropical Smoothies from Batidos La Sorpresa
  • Fresh Ceviche from the Mercado de Mariscos

Nothing at Casco Viejo

  • Traditional Fonda Food at the Mercado de Abastos
  • Unexpectedly Awesome Seafood from Peach Fuzz International
  • Refreshing Craft Beer from La Rana Dorada

La Fiesta Panameña from El Trapiche

  • Gluttonous Milkshakes from La Casa De Las Frutas, Jugos y Helados

Best Panamanian Food in Panama City Map

Here's a map with all our recommendations for the best Panamanian food in Panama City. Check out our guide for how to save this to your phone and even use it offline.

Cheese Empanadas and Chicheme from Artisana

panama city panama food tours

About an hour outside of Panama City, right on the Interamerican Highway, is a legendary vendor of cheeses and treats called Quesos Chela . Day and night, people line up here to buy their delicious snacks.

While it’s almost worth the drive out there and get in line to try for yourself, the good news is you don’t have to. You can get a taste of Queso Chela’s best at Artisana , a small cafe in Cangrejo.

The two must-try items, which make for an ideal quick snack or breakfast, are the cheese empanadas and the chicheme. Chicheme is a traditional Panamanian corn beverage that’s thick, tasty, and… chunky. You gotta try it.

A Smoothie From Batidos La Sorpresa in Santa Ana

panama city panama food tours

Batidos la Sorpresa consists of a man, his blender, and his ingredients. That's it.

It's a no-frills roadside stand that serves fresh fruit shakes for the best price in town. Select whichever fruits you’d like (…or corn flakes) and he’ll whip you up a refreshing smoothie for just $1.50. To avoid sugar overload, ask him to make it “sin azucar” (without sugar).

Don’t be put off by La Sorpresa’s location. Though it’s in a low-income neighborhood, its proximity to Casco Viejo means it’s safe to walk around during the day.

Ceviche From the Mercado de Mariscos

Food Panama City

Within eyesight of Batidos la Sorpresa is Panama City’s main fish market, the Mercado de Mariscos. Around the back end of the market, on the sea side, is the food court. There you can get maybe the healthiest Panamanian food there is (which isn't saying much): ceviche.

When you get to the food court, you’ll be accosted by people trying to guide you to their ceviche stand. Smile, say “no gracias,” and make your way to the stand at end closest to Casco Viejo. Whereas most other stands charge $2.00 for a cup of ceviche de corvina (sea bass), this one only charges $1.50.

While “Nothing” would be an appropriate name for an eatery in the increasingly hipster Casco Viejo, Panama City's old town, I literally mean you should eat nothing in Casco Vieo.

The old part of town is definitely worth walking around for a while, but when it comes to true Panamanian food not only is it lacking, but it’s far too expensive.

Fonda Food at the Mercado de Abastos

A fonda is a typical Panamanian eatery you’ll find all across Panama. Kind of like you do with Chinese food from a food court, at a fonda you typically pick from a selection of pre-prepared meats and sides.

While you can find fondas everywhere in Panama City, I suggest the ones at the Mercado de Abastos because A) they’re en route between the previous and next destinations, and B) the Mercado de Abastos is worth checking out in its own right.

The Mercado de Abastos is the main fruit and vegetable market of the city. It’s both a wholesale market—you’ll see plenty of restaurant and corner store owners buying large quantities of produce—and a market for thrifty individuals.

As for what to eat at the fondas, I’m partial to the costillas (very fatty and very crispy ribs) with tajadas (sweet fried plantains) and lentejas (lentils) on the side.

Seafood from Peach Fuzz International

Peach Fuzz International Panamanian Food

The name, “Peach Fuzz International” isn’t the only thing that doesn’t make sense about this restaurant. What is such an awesome restaurant doing in such a sketchy neighborhood? And what is the owner, who is just as American as he is Panamanian, doing there?

Who knows and who cares. What’s important is that the seafood at Peach Fuzz International is better than any I’ve tried at exponentially more upscale restaurants.

I recommend trying pataconos rellenos (plantain cups filled with your choice of seafood). The octopus, whole red snapper, and everything else on the “menu” (he has no menu, you just ask what’s available) are delicious.

Beware that the neighborhood Peach Fuzz is in is so sketchy that our Uber driver, upon seeing our destination, exclaimed, “Oh my! You’re entering into the wolves’ den! Why?” Do not walk there, even though it’s close. And don’t go at night. But you’ll have no problem if you go by car during the day. There’s a strong police presence and diners are left alone out of respect for the owner. Seeing this side of town is an experience in itself.

Craft Beer from La Rana Dorada

Rana Dorada Panama Best Bar

La Rana Dorada was the first to bring micro-brewed beers to Panama and has since expanded to multiple locations throughout the city. While the other locations are brighter and more modern, if you’re following this Panamanian food tour you should go to their original location in El Cangrejo.

Before ordering, ensure they bring you a little boat with a small sample cup of each beer. It's free! Pick your favorite and, if you’re there before 6 pm, enjoy a glass (or pitcher) at half price.

I was such a regular when I used to live in Panama that I got a customized mug with my name, Blachut, on it. Look for it in the vestibule on the way to the washrooms.

El Trapiche is no secret. Every guide book lists it and if you google “Panamanian food restaurants” it’ll be the first one that shows up.

Once a restaurant gets such a stranglehold on a market its quality typically goes down. Frankly, that’s probably the case with El Trapiche. You’re unlikely to finish a meal there and think, “Wow, that was mind-blowingly good,” then tell your friends they have to visit Panama City just to eat there.

Nevertheless, you should go. Get a sampling of traditional Panamanian food by ordering La Fiesta Panameña. This dish, which you can probably share with someone else—especially if you’ve been eating at all the places above—is a platter of many different Panamanian foods. Not all of them are particularly delicious, but they’re all worth trying at least this one time.

Batido from La Casa De Las Frutas, Jugos y Helados

Casa De Los Helados Panama

La Casa de las Frutas, Jugos y Helados (the House of Fruit, Juice, and Ice Cream—if you needed this translation you might want to brush up on your Spanish just a little bit) is located on Calle 50 in the San Francisco neighborhood. It's a bit of a detour from the rest of our Panamanian food tour, but I have to mention it anyways.

La Casa is a drive-through fruit and milkshake fantasyland. I honestly don’t know why no other blog or food site mentions it. Maybe it's because the locals selfishly don’t want more people to know about it. The lines are too long as it is.

What even the locals don't know is there's a trick to skipping the line: come by foot (or park your car nearby but out of sight). That way you can walk right past the lineup of cars and make your order. People in their cars won’t resent you for jumping them in line; they’ll think you’re crazy for walking in the heat of Panama.

While La Casa serves every imaginable variety of fruit-derived drinks, desserts, and salads, batidos are the go-to. These batidos are not like the ones from La Sorpresa above; they're ice cream milkshakes. Pick from any of the long list of fruits (or combine two for an extra fifty cents) and enjoy the cheapest most tropical milkshake of your life. Then go home to digest all that food.

Rest and Digest

If you made it through this whole Panama City Panamanian food tour, you'll be wanting to lie down.

Where to stay?

As I mentioned above, I recommend staying in Cangrejo, nearby via Argentina. Since I've always either had my own place or stayed with friends, I can't recommend any specific hotel. Check out what's good on Booking.com , or on Airbnb .

6 thoughts on “The Best Panamanian Food in Panama City”

Have you ever eaten at Pedro Mandinga Rum Bar in Casco Viejo? I personally love the food there. Plus, I appreciate small menus with a few, but really good, plates.

Amen on small menus! Not only is the food generally better when the kitchen only has to focus on making a few dishes, but it's easier for indecisive hungry people like myself to choose from. I'll definitely check out Pedro Mandinaga soon! Thanks for the tip.

Any recommendations on where to get good local food in or near the airport? We will be there in June and have a 4 hour layover midday and would love to check out the local flavor!

That's a good question, Al. Unfortunately I don't have any great answers for you.

The issue is the areas close the airport are risky for tourists to go to, so even though there are undoubtedly a couple very local fondas there, I wouldn't recommend them. You'd have to go further afield to somewhere like Costa del Este. Or maybe PesKitos in Brisas del Golf. Just be careful with traffic, which can be a disaster around rush hour.

I have to be honest the authors opinion about Panamanian food is just his opinion because anyone for example that has had Colombian food will definitely enjoy Panamanian food. it's true that Mexican food is very good but I'm sorry there is also plates that I personally don't like and I am someone that lives in San Antonio Texas and I have also lived in Panama as well. The author says that ceviche is the only Panamanian food that is healthy lol this guy knows very little about Panamanian cuisine and that's perfectly fine but to tell you the truth he missed out on a lot and seems like he didn't want to take an effort to really find out the vast majority of seafood plates that are completely healthy since Panama is abundant in seafood and also regions out in the western part of Panama in the highlands produce some of the best lush vegetables in the world. it's true that Panamanian and Colombian food and Puerto Rican food as well have a lot of fried dishes but they also have tons of healthy varieties as well. and Mexican food and Peruvian food can also be extremely unhealthy much more than Panamanian and that is one of the main reasons why in countries like Mexico obesity is a very big factor and from what I've seen even in Peru… Definitely a very biased information and not well searched.

Thanks for sharing your opinions, Christine. You're right, I'm generalizing. Panama, like every country in the world, I believe, has fresh food, too. And some food they eat in Panama is healthy and some isn't. I don't think that's particularly helpful to people visiting Panama, so I didn't write it and focused on what I found to be unique to Panama during the 3 years I lived there.

Exploring Panama City, Panama with kids

A re you visiting Panama? Your time in the country will almost certainly begin or end with a few days exploring its capital city, and there are lots of fun activities to check out. It was the first stop on our family gap year trip around the world, and we were very happy with all of the great family activities in Panama City, Panama!

Looking for more ideas for visiting Panama? Check out our complete guide!

Pro tip:  Take Uber everywhere! It’s cheap and easy, and the cars are generally nicer than regular taxis (especially from the airport). Many rides in the city are just a few dollars. If you’re traveling with young kids, check out the best travel car seat options to use in Uber. If you’re new to Uber, save $5 on your first two rides .

Things to do in Panama City with kids

Visit miraflores locks.

There is nothing for which Panama is more famous than its namesake canal, which connects the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean through a series of locks relying only on gravity and clever engineering. The Canal opened in 1913 and has changed the world in so many ways over the last century, from accelerating the globalization of commerce to impacting global ocean circulation patterns that drive weather systems. Today there are 14,000 ships that pass through the Canal every year, and if you plan your visit to the locks right, you’ll be able to witness some of them. You can easily combine a visit to the Miraflores locks with a stop at the Biomuseo below.

Located part of the way out on the Causeway Amador, the Biomuseo is a gorgeous, colorful Frank Ghery designed space dedicated to the wealth of biodiversity of Panama. We love the way the museum’s layout integrated the world-altering formation of the Panama isthmus with discussions of Panama’s past and present species of flora and fauna. What’s more, there’s even great information on Panama’s history from multiple perspectives from the pre-Colombian era to present day engineering marvels. A visit to Biomuseo is a great complement to the Miraflores locks, as it’s just an affordable Uber ride separating them.

Monkey Island and Panama Canal tour with Panama Day Trips

If you only have two days in Panama City, make sure to book this small group tour with Panama Day Trips. The monkey islands in Panama are a fun and interesting place for visitors of all ages, and these wonderful tour guides provide great context to make it a rich experience. You’ll also get to see both coasts of Panama, the newest project of the Panama Canal and much more. This tour was one of the highlights of our trip to Panama! Read more about it here or book your tour today .

Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute

If your family enjoys visiting zoos and aquariums, don’t miss the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute’s (STRI) small FREE educational center on the Causeway Amador. Our whole family “ooooh”ed and “ahhhhh”ed at the sea turtle display, while the young English-speaking guide in the reptile exhibit taught us so much and did an amazing job of engaging the kids. There’s also a beautiful touch tank with sea stars and a building housing aquariums representing each of the various aquatic habitats of Panama.

Bike the Causeway Amador

One of Panama’s newer public works projects is the Causeway Amador, a 6km path for walking and biking that extends from the main portion of Panama City all the way out past STRI and Biomuseo. The bike rentals were very affordable compared to the US, and drivers other cyclists out that direction seemed generally respectful. You can either rent bikes in the city and go out to the Causeway, or as we did, rent at the end of the Causeway and go back in the direction of the city. We kept our family’s ride very short, as it was Jacob’s first solo ride, but he did great and made it to the Smithsonian for a visit.

We were pleased to find that Burke Bikes has a wide range of options available for our family, including a rear-mounted seat for Shoshana and a 14” kids bike for Jacob (with his choice of whether or not to use training wheels). They also offer family-sized quad bikes if you’d rather have everyone together. No matter what gear you choose, there’s a nicely paved, dedicated bike path that runs adjacent to the sidewalk – no worrying about oncoming traffic! There’s also a great nautical-themed playground where parents can enjoy city or sea views while the kids practice their climbing skills. And if you find the bag of Shoshana’s clothing that we left behind, please sent it our way!

Stroll through Casco Viejo (Casco Antiguo)

I’ll admit that I don’t think we did justice to Casco Viejo (displayed on local signs as Casco Antiguo). This section of the city dates from the 17th century and is an amazing place for street photography, especially in the evening! It’s an area that really demonstrates the juxtapositions you’ll find in Panama City, with decaying buildings now housing a bustling night scene. If you have the time an interest, I’d recommend booking a free walking tour of the area – it’s probably the best way to quickly get acquainted with a city.

Where to eat in Panama City, Panama

By far our favorite restaurant in Panama City is the venerable El Trapiche in El Cangrejo. The bargain-prices Panamanian restaurant attracts tourists and locals alike with its delicious food at extremely reasonable prices. We liked it so much that we ate on their spacious patio twice! The portions are extremely generous, so order accordingly.

Between us, we sampled the range of Panamanian specialties: frijoles y arroz for Shoshana, ceviche for me, “amazing” steak for Jacob and “old rope” for Ronnie – all served with a healthy portion of caramelized plantains to finish things off.  For the adult visitors, you’ll find all of your favorite Central American cocktails on the menu (especially rum-based drinks!). If given the choice again, we’d probably eat every meal at El Trapiche in Panama City.

Where to stay in Panama City, Panama

We liked staying in the El Cangrejo neighborhood for its centrality. We had a great stay at the Hampton by Hilton Hotel and it was an awesome bargain – with their long weekend promotion and our AAA discount, we paid only  $75 per night for a two-bedroom, 1.5 bathroom suite!  While we often stay in vacation rentals to give our family more space to spread out, the Hampton by Hilton was almost as spacious. The hotel also features a swanky rooftop pool with amazing views of the city at night. Ronnie loved sneaking off to the fitness center after the kids went to bed. In the morning, breakfasts featured a mix of typical American far and local specialties. Book your room today!

Many airlines have 'stopover' programs that let travelers tour a city between connecting flights, and some will even pay for a hotel — here's how to book them

  • Many people intentionally book flights with long connections so they can explore the layover city.
  • Airlines capitalize on this trend with "stopover" programs, some even offering free hotels and food.
  • These stopovers benefit travelers, airlines, and the carrier's home country by boosting tourism.

Insider Today

A special segment of adventurous travelers will purposely book itineraries with long connections in layover cities just to leave the airport and explore for a few hours or days between flights.

Airlines have jumped on this growing trend with built-in "stopover" programs, which can come with free or discounted hotels, excursions, transportation, and food at the layover destination.

It's basically a vacation within a vacation.

Although it sounds too good to be true, stopovers benefit everyone involved. Travelers get more choices and don't have to be confined to an airport, airlines gain customers who may have otherwise chosen a nonstop option on a competitor, and the carrier's home country sees a boost in tourism.

Plus, the cheap or complimentary accommodations typically come at a small cost to airlines, thanks to partnerships with local hotels or tour companies.

Not all stopover programs are structured with an emphasis on tourism, though, as some were created simply to offer conveniences during long layovers. Still, they are a way to secure a free hotel and explore an extra city.

Here are 22 global airline stopover programs, each lasting anywhere from hours to months.

Many carriers allow stopovers to be added to a regular cash booking, but some are only available via award tickets . This means the flight was paid for using points/miles or a combination of points/miles and cash.

Air Canada has a stopover option built into its Aeroplan loyalty program. It allows customers booking award flights to add a stop on international journeys and explore practically any city the airline flies to outside the US and Canada.

The add-on costs 5,000 Aeroplan points each way and can only be booked if the stop is at least 24 hours, capping out at 45 days.

Air France/KLM

Air France and Dutch carrier KLM's Flying Blue loyalty program offers a stopover of 24 hours or more in a connecting city on either carrier or their airline partners.

The option is free to add to award tickets, and passengers can stay up to a year in the stopover city.

China Southern Airlines

China Southern Airlines offers a free one-night hotel stay for transfer passengers with connection times lasting between six and 30 hours, though there are some time and route restrictions.

Breakfast and transportation are included for eligible travelers.

Copa Airlines

Copa Airlines' Panama stopover program allows customers to spend anywhere from 24 hours to seven days in the nation's capital, Panama City, on their outbound or return trip.

The option is free for the first stopover, but a second stopover can cost up to $250 plus taxes. Copa offers discounted hotels and tours that can be booked via its stopover website.

Emirates allows a stopover in Dubai with the option to add discounted tours or hotel bookings to the itinerary via its website.

The UAE carrier also has a " Dubai Connect " program that gives passengers with layovers between 6 and 26 hours, depending on the cabin, a complimentary hotel, transfers, meals, and any needed visa.

Dubai Connect only triggers if the customer takes the next available flight. Essentially, you can't intentionally book a longer layover to quality for the free stopover hotel.

Ethiopian Airlines

Ethiopian Airlines' transit program gives customers flying via Addis Ababa a free hotel, transit visa, and transfers during layovers lasting between eight and 24 hours.

The hotel on the airline's website is the Ethiopian Skylight In-Terminal Hotel, located inside the airport.

Etihad Airways

Etihad Airways offers a stopover in its Abu Dhabi hub, which comes with an undisclosed discount at select three-star hotels for up to two nights.

Two and four-night stays can be booked at more luxurious four and five-star hotels at a 40% discount. The minimum stay is 24 hours.

Although Etihad's website says it is temporarily unavailable, the airline used to allow eligible travelers to use a so-called Transit Connect Package that provided a free hotel near the airport for layovers lasting 10 to 24 hours. It is unclear when or if the program is returning.

Fiji Airways

Fiji Airways offers a stopover program in Fiji for those traveling to and from Australia, New Zealand, and other South Pacific nations.

Related stories

Hotels and activities like ziplining and beach resorts can be booked through the airline as part of the stopover package.

Finnair allows passengers to book 6, 12, or 24-hour layovers in Helsinki at no additional fare charge and outlines itinerary ideas and information on its website , like transportation, free walking tours, and restaurants.

Customers can book a hotel through the airline and earn Finnair Plus points.

Iberia customers can plan a stopover in Madrid to or from an international destination for one to six nights at no extra cost.

Discounts on hotels, excursions, and transfers in the Spanish capital are available through Iberia.

Icelandair offers a stopover option for one to seven days in its capital city of Reykjavik on transatlantic itineraries for no additional charge.

The airline offers itinerary help and assistance in booking excursions and tours. Hotels need to be booked separately.

Japan Airlines

Japan Airlines considers itself one of the "most stopover -friendly" carriers in the world.

The stopovers, which trigger at 24 hours, are not limited to JAL's hubs in Tokyo but can be enjoyed in places like Osaka and Kyoto using the airline's multi-city booking tool.

Latam Airlines

Latam Airlines offers stopovers for between one and three days on flights that connect in São Paulo, Brasilia, Fortaleza, Recife, Manaus, Curitiba, and Belem. Only international itineraries that connect in São Paulo.

Hotels and amenities can be booked via Latam, but the stopover booking is free.

Oman Air offers customizable stopover packages to give travelers time to explore the country's capital, Muscat, and beyond. An additional fare charge may be applicable, though the airline does not fly to the US.

Packages and a-la-carte options include discounted hotels for up to three nights, as well as organized tours, meals, and transfers.

Australian flag carrier Qantas offers its stopovers in a similar manner to JAL in that multi-city bookings can be manipulated to add extra days between flights in layover cities, like Bangkok, Osaka, or San Francisco.

This comes at no extra cost on eligible Qantas fares and can be used on its Oneworld partner airlines.

Qatar Airways

Qatar Airways' stopover program allows passengers with a minimum layover of 12 hours and up to 24 hours to choose from a list of deeply discounted four and five-star hotels. Certain flight itineraries allow for up to four nights.

Nightly hotel rates start at $14 per person for 1 night at four-star standard hotels, with premium five-star beach hotels starting at $30 per person for one night.

Royal Jordanian Airlines

Royal Jordanian Airlines' transit program gives economy and business-class travelers with at least eight and six-hour layovers, respectively, a free hotel room, meals, and transit, assuming certain fare conditions are met.

However, the connecting flight must be the earliest possible — meaning, similar to Emirates, passengers can't intentionally book a longer layover to be eligible for the complimentary perks.

Swiss International Air Lines

Swiss International Air Lines, or SWISS, has a multi-city stopover booking tool on its website that allows passengers to find itineraries with extra days in Switzerland.

The cost of hotels and other perks is on the customer, though.

Singapore Airlines

Singapore Airlines' stopover program is available via the multi-city tool, similar to other carriers, where travelers can add hotels, transfers, and activities. The stopover can last one to seven days.

Singapore also offers free transit tours to passengers with layover times between five and a half and 24 hours at Singapore's Changi Airport. It's first-come, first-serve and includes sightseeing around Singapore.

TAP Air Portugal

TAP Air Portugal allows customers to add a stopover in Lisbon or Porto between one and 10 days, offering discounts on hotels, food, and activities.

It also offers 25% off a domestic flight to a second Portuguese destination, like the Azores or Madeira islands, to take during the stopover.

Turkish Airlines

Turkish Airlines' stopover program gives economy travelers a one-night free hotel stay and business flyers a two-night free stay if the period between their connecting flights in Istanbul exceeds 20 hours.

Those traveling from the US in economy class can stay up to two nights in a four-star hotel, while those traveling in business can stay up to three nights in a five-star hotel.
