Private Tour Upgrade Available?

Tour length, departure times, difficulty (1-10), recommended abilities, attractions, special interests, these faqs are specific to this tour. if you would like to view our general faqs click here ..

1. Is Peekaboo Slot Canyon an easy hike? The walk through Peekaboo Slot Canyon is very easy. We drive you right to the entrance of the slot. From there, it is a slow, 1-mile round trip meander through a gorgeous, red rock slot canyon. The ground is fairly flat and level, but there is some sand to walk through and loose rocks to negotiate. There are two small obstacles most people can cross without difficulty: One boulder about 3 feet high, and one large log that must be stepped over or ducked under.

2. How does Peekaboo Slot Canyon compare to Antelope Canyon? Both Peekaboo and Antelope are carved from the same Navajo Sandstone formation. Peekaboo is a bit longer than Lower Antelope Canyon. The stone is more red, but it is not carved as intricately as Antelope. Peekaboo is much less crowded, so if offers a true nature experience of quiet and solitude. Tripods are welcome. Read a more detailed comparison of Antelope and Peekaboo in our blog .

3. Is Peekaboo Canyon good for photography? May I bring my tripod? Photographers relish the challenge of the ever changing light in Peekaboo and even amatures with iPhones come away with stunning images. We encourage photography on our trips and our tour allows about 2 hours in the slot canyon if needed. Tripods, GoPros and gimbals are welcome. Photographers are encouraged to linger behind the group to set up their perfect shots. It’s a slot canyon, so you really can’t get lost.

4. What’s the best time of day to shoot images in Peekaboo? Light varies widely depending on the season. In the winter, mid day is good. Look for the 10 a.m., 1 p.m. or 2 p.m. tour. In spring and fall, 9 or 10 a.m. or 3 or 4 p.m. are ideal. In the summer when the sun is higher in the sky, early morning is the ticket. Look for 8 or 9 a.m. or 4 p.m. The idea is to capture reflective light that bounces off the canyon walls and creates beautiful orange, red and yellows. In mid day in the summer when the sun is high, there is a big contrast between light and shadow, making photography more challenging. Light beams come and go in an instant in late spring to early fall. We don’t see the in the winter. Photographers might also consider the Sunset Safari tour that includes an afternoon trip to the slot canyon, followed by a drive to a viewpoint to photograph the sunset.

5. Are drones allowed on this tour? Yes, drones are allowed on this tour, but Peekaboo is not necessarily a good place to fly a drone. It is narrow and there may be other people in close proximity. When operating a drone on tours, please be mindful of other guests on the tour and other hikers who may be in the area. Others seek remote locations for the solitude. Please do not fly drones close to other people and limit the amount of time the drone is in the air. Always follow instructions from your guide.

Guest Experiences on the Peekaboo Slot Canyon Tour

LKlina – June 10, 2019 TripAdvisor If I could give them a 6, I would. First off we scheduled late, but they accommodated our needs and set us up with a tour of the slot canyons for the next day. Steve our guide was knowledgeable about the area allowed sufficient time to take pictures without making us feeling like we were being shuttled to the next stop. I have been on some tours with other companies were you just feel rushed the whole tour, but not with Dreamland. If you are able, take a tour with Dreamland, you will not regret it.

Explore00315038578 – June 5, 2019 TripAdvisor We all thoroughly enjoyed our tour of the slot canyons. It was extremely informative and also great fun. We all enjoyed being jostled around in the 4WD going to and from the canyons. The views from the lookout were spectacular.

909fenellac – April 22, 2019 TripAdvisor Very nice excursion at Slot Canyon almost private for our family of 4. The place is so nice and very easy to access event with kids. The Guide Steve is very nice and helpful. I will definitively recommend the tour to my friends, family and clients.

Audrey G – November 14, 2018 TripAdvisor Just completed a truly wonderful visit to White Pocket on a photo safari with Dreamland and AZ Highways Photo Tours. Dreamland’s outfitters were outstanding. Food was almost too good and plentiful. Their service and attention to detail is outstanding. Not sure when my next trip is with them but I’m already looking forward to it!

We can always accommodate single travelers via private tours ($799).  Often times, we are also able to combine a single traveler with other scheduled parties; please give us a call at 435-644-5506 to discuss the latter option.

Time stands still for you at this hard-to-reach gem. Natives once lived in and around this place and left their marks, lending it an aura of mysticism and wonderment.

Slot Canyon Photo

Come with us on an exciting 4×4 ride through the vibrant pink sand and dramatic red sandstone to a spectacular slot canyon not far from Kanab.

Both amateur and more serious photographers find it easy to capture beautiful photos here. Peekaboo’s solid red color and orange hued glows makes it unique. Most slot canyons are white or a mixture of colors.

Our slot canyon tour guides you on an easy photo and nature walk. It is accessible to all ages and abilities, though a 2021 flash flood created a mid-canyon ~5ft obstacle that requires the ascent of a ladder.  All our slot canyon tours are led by an expert naturalist tour guide. See wildlife, wildflowers, cool geology, and even some archaeology on this value-packed tour.

About Peekaboo Canyon in Kanab, UT

All of our Kanab tours include a meander through the gorgeous, red rock slot canyon known locally as Peekaboo. The ½-mile canyon is one of the easiest slots to walk through in Southern Utah. It is not to be confused with another slot canyon that is also called Peekaboo that lies off Hole-in-the-Rock-Road near Escalante and is usually explored on the same trek as Spooky Gulch.

At our Peekaboo Canyon, brilliant red Navajo sandstone walls tower about 80 feet over a narrow slot that has been carved into abstract shapes over the millennia by flowing water. The first narrow section is short, but continue walking up the wash and the slot soon narrows again and it becomes deeper and darker. Eventually hikers come to another rock jam that’s high overhead, and they turn around and exit the way they came in.

About half way through the hike, keep an eye out for Moqui steps on the left side of the slot canyon. This stairway was carved by Anasazi roughly 800-1,000 years ago. It is likely these Native Americans stored grain on the high ledges of the slot canyon, perhaps to protect their food from rats and mice that carry hantavirus.

Further into the slot canyon, you’ll see logs that are wedged in the slot high overhead – evidence of flash floods that have torn through this landscape. Warnings of flash floods in slot canyons are real. It is essential to be aware of the weather and have a good understanding of a landscape before entering a slot canyon. Peekaboo Slot Canyon is safer than many other slot canyons because it has a fairly small draining. A summit lies about 8 miles north of the slot, meaning it takes a very local storm to flood the canyon. Some slot canyons, such as Buckskin Gulch in the Paria Canyon-Vermilion Cliffs Wilderness Area, have a very large draining. Slots like this are particularly dangerous because you could be hiking under clear blue skies and be surprised by a deadly flash flood that originated from a storm many miles away. The Peekaboo Slot Canyon near Kanab gets deadly flash floods also but they are less frequent and the hiker would have some idea that there is a storm in the area and it is a good day to stay out of the slot canyon.

Why is there more than one Peekaboo Canyon?

In early ranching days, “peekaboo” was a general term used for any narrow canyon because kids loved to hide among the steep, curvy walls and play peek-a-boo. The name has perpetuated for several slot canyons in Utah including this one where we do so many tours.

Hike Peekaboo, it’s easy!

Many slot canyons are not accessible by vehicle and often have mud, cold pools of water, large obstacles or pour-offs that require climbing gear. Peekaboo Canyon is dry, and the floor is mostly flat with only a couple of small obstacles that almost everyone can negotiate.  As of summer 2021, a flash flood created a ~5ft mid-canyon obstacle that requires the ascent of a ladder.  In other sections of the canyon, small rocks strewn about do make the footing uneven at times. We drive guests right up to the entrance of the slot canyon. From there, the tour is a mostly easy stroll, about 1 mile or less round trip. This is also a great tour in the summertime because you’re out of the sun most of the time, and the rocks in the slot canyon hold the cool temperature from the night before.

Getting to Peekaboo

Peekaboo Slot Canyon lies off Highway 89 about seven miles north of Kanab. This is where things get interesting. The next 3.5 miles or so traverse very deep sand along BLM route 102, which drops you to a wash about one mile downstream of the slot canyon. We drive up this wash and right to the entrance of the slot canyon. Some choose to hike the sand roads from Highway 89. The distance is roughly 4 miles each way, but hiking through that deep, loose sand makes the hike feel longer. There is limited cell service and the network of sand roads is confusing, so some hikers never actually find the slot canyon. Driving is a challenging option, too. The sand is really deep. Even with a good four-wheel drive vehicle with abundant ground clearance, good off-road tires and deflating your tires properly for sand driving some drivers still get stuck. This is not the road to practice your sand driving skills if you are inexperienced. To get a good sense of how bad the sand is, read a blog post one of our guides wrote about driving to Peekaboo . The good news about the difficult road is it thins the crowds. On most trips we see very few others here.

Photographing the canyon

Lighting changes quickly in the slot canyon and varies every few steps because more light filters into the slot where the canyon is wider. If you shoot with manual settings, you will have to change your ISO continuously. Even in mid summer, it is fairly dark in the back of the canyon and a tripod may be necessary for longer exposures in a couple of dark sections. Most of the canyon is light enough that a tripod is not necessary and some areas are quite sunny.

The best time to photograph the canyon in the summer time is in the early morning or late afternoon: Choose a tour start time of 8 or 10 a.m. or an afternoon time of 4 p.m. or try our sunset tour.  In the winter months when the sun is lower in the sky, midday is best in the slot canyon. We do see some light beams in Peekaboo in the summertime.  For the casual photographer, iPhones and other smart phone cameras work – surprisingly – remarkably well for producing great slot canyon photos. They are good at compensating for the uneven lighting in the canyon.

Another tip for shooting in the slot canyon is look for areas where the light is less varied. It is hard for a camera to compensate when there is a dark shadow and a bright sunny area in the same frame. Try to compose photos so that the light is more even and the exposure will be even, avoiding areas that are both very dark or overexposed in the same photograph.

A great family hike

We love experiencing the slot canyon with kids, it’s like seeing nature through fresh eyes. It’s impossible to lose kids in the slot canyon, so this trek make the parent’s job easier. And kids love climbing around on the curvy walls in the shade where it stays relatively cool, even in the summer heat.

Had a great day with John on our adventure to The Great Chamber and Peekaboo Canyon. Very knowledgeable of the area and its history and geology and helped us get the best photos.

Jeff (and Carrie) were the best guides you can ask for! They got us to The Wave and Melody Arch safely in the extreme heat and were very patient getting our group back to the trailhead. Knowledgeable, fun and safe - the trifecta! Condo was very nice as well.

We were lucky enough to get a permit for The Wave. Rather than hike it ourselves we decided to hire a tour company to take us. It was a good choice as this was winter and the roads were quite muddy and many cars were getting trapped or stuck. Luckily in their Jeep it was no issue. The hike was gorgeous and we appreciated the information we got about the area while we hiked along. We definitely will use this company again as we continue to explore the area.

We were lucky enough to get a permit for the Wave and used Coral Cliff Tours for transport and guide. Raymond was our guide and wonderful!! We got to see different parts of North Coyote Buttes in addition to the magic of The Wave with Raymond guiding us and showing us other magical spots along our hike. Highly recommend Coral Cliff Tours!! Both Julie and Jeff were wondering in helping set up our tour and very accommodating and helpful in giving recommendations on good food and spots in Kanab. Thanks Coral Reef Tours for making our Wave experience wonderful!!

In Mid May my wife and I took a trip to Zion National Park and a few other places. Kanab had a few things we wanted to do, with "The Great Chamber" and "Peekaboo Slot Canyon" being the key ones. Note, this Peekaboo is different than the one near Escalante. That one is longer, but a lot more challenging and much tighter fits. We saw a good number of great reviews on other sites for Coral Cliffs Tours and looking at their website, they offered more flexibility in the tours / locations offered. We did a "Pick Two" where we chose the two places we wanted to visit. Communication was great, pricing was great, but my wife and I absolutely loved our guide Hunter! He is young, but professional, knowledgeable, fun and was one of the best guides we have ever had. We saw some other tour companies with open vehicles, but it was nice to be enclosed, with AC and not eating the tons of sand / dirt that make up the "roads" to these locations. 4 WD is a must, and getting to these spots would be a challenge without knowing where to go

We had a great experience with Julie! We did the Peek a Boo slot canyon tour with John as our guide. I took my son who is only 2.5 and he absolutely loved it. It was the perfect family hike and John took some amazing pictures of our family. I will definitely book this tour company again. Highly recommend!

Amazing tour company. If you want to support a terrific small business contact Julie & Jeff. They are wonderful people with a wonderful company. Our guide was Awesome, Raymond was so very knowledgeable and a very safe driver. The locations they offer are fantastic. In order, to view these sites you DEFINITELY need the right vehicle a standard car will not get you there. Book now it is so worth the money.

This is a fantastic tour company, and the best deal in town. Julie, the owner, was so nice and even let me switch to a different time when I needed it. Darin, the guide, was the best! He's friendly, knowledgeable and kind, and he led us on a great tour of White Pocket, always making sure everyone was taken care of. I highly recommend them, and I hope to hire them next time I'm in town.

We had a great tour hosted by Coyote, (weather forecast provided by Tyson) that included the Great Chamber and Peek-a-boo Canyon. Coyote is a knowledgeable guide and a great, but subtle, personality. He has a great respect of the land. We found the jeep to be more pleasant than the side-by-side, keeping the sun and dust at bay. Plus, the AC was very nice between sites. Overall, Coral Cliffs Tours was a big hit for us. It was a highlight for us. PS - Peek-a-boo Canyon is a must see!

Thank you Malcolm! We appreciate your kind review and we are so glad you enjoyed your tour with Yote! We hope to see you if you’re ever back in the area!

Photo of Emily B.

This company provided a guide to drive us into the canyon(s) to see the Peekaboo Slot Canyon and the Grand Chamber. The guide's name was Kyote and he was definitely a "people" person in the best sense of the word. He was polite, prompt, compassionate, listened carefully, and was extremely patient with me as I started down the wrong trail when returning from the hike to the Great Chamber. He also stopped to help some other jeepers whose vehicle's battery was dead. My husband was particularly happy because Kyote shares his love of driving through mud puddles.

Emily, this was such a great review! Thank you for sharing it with us Yote is great! We are so happy that you enjoyed the tour!

Exploring Peek-A-Boo Slot Canyon – An Adventure in Kanab Utah

Kanab is a small southern Utah town located just across the border from Arizona. The town is surrounded by lots of natural beauty, and the entire area is an adventure wonderland.  We had an unexpected long weekend pop up in mid-October and I jumped at the chance to spend it in Kanab.  It was one of the last areas we hadn’t yet visited during our many southern Utah road trips during the pandemic.  While tripping Kanab, I discovered a plethora of tours and activities to choose from. One adventure I booked was a Peek-A-Boo Slot Canyon ATV Tour with the Kanab Tour Company.  We spent an afternoon driving Polaris RZR Side-by-Sides across remote sandy trails to spectacular viewpoints, culminating in a hike through one of the area’s favorite slot canyons…Peek-A-Boo.

Some of the links in this post may be affiliate links.  If you buy something after clicking one of these links, I may earn a small commission.  This does not cost you anything extra and helps support this blog .

So Many Slot Canyons, Not Enough Names

A slot canyon is a long narrow passageway eroded through sandstone with tall, sheer rock walls often reaching 100 feet or higher. Utah has the highest concentration of slot canyons in the world with an estimated 1000 of them in the southern part of the state.  Kanab is a great base for exploring several of the most popular.

I guess when it comes to naming 1000 slot canyons, creativity can become an issue. There are two Peek-A-Boo slot canyons in Utah.  One is located in the Escalante-Grand Staircase National Monument, and the other is 8 miles north of Kanab on BLM land.  Adding to the confusion, the Kanab Peek-A-Boo Slot Canyon is also known by its original name Red Canyon. This not to be confused with Utah’s other Red Canyon located near Bryce Canyon National Park.  Canyon confusion!

(I’ve also written about the other Red Canyon on this blog)

We were later told that no one knows exactly why the Canyon’s name was changed from Red to Peek-A-Boo.  But some locals believe it’s named for a tiny “window” in the canyon’s wall that allows for photos like this….

Kanab Tour Company

Most of the popular slot canyons near Kanab are not easy to access.  Many are at the end of dirt roads that absolutely require high clearance 4×4 vehicles, as is the case with Peek-A-Boo slot canyon.  I looked into renting a high-clearance 4×4 while in Kanab, so we could see many of the area’s off-road sites.  We had done something similar at Capitol Reef National Park last year, spending a day exploring the remote Cathedral Valley Loop in a rented Jeep.  However, because it was a last minute trip (during Utah’s busy Fall Break weekend no less) rentals were booked.

So I sought out alternative ways to explore slot canyons, ultimately discovering Kanab Tour Company and their Peek-A-Boo Slot Canyon ATV Tour .  We could drive one of their Polaris RZR UTVs along the rough access road, while also having fun exploring the surrounding trails. Plus we could drive the RZR ourselves. Many other tour companies located in Kanab insist on doing the driving for you.  I definitely wanted to drive, and thinking that this sounded like a great afternoon, signed us up.

Getting Started

The Peek-A-Boo Slot Canyon Tour starts at the Kanab Tour Company office in Kanab. Here we were fitted with helmets and protective eyewear, signed the usual waivers, and watched a quick video explaining a little bit about the day ahead. We then drove the 8 miles in our own car to the Peek-A-Boo trailhead parking area.

Upon arrival at the dirt parking area, we found our group of 4 RZRs already lined up, and met Jason – our guide for the afternoon.

I’ve never driven a RZR Side-by-Side (or any other kind of ATV/UTV) before.  Jason gave us a quick lesson in everything we needed to know.  It seemed pretty straight-forward.  Standard steering wheel, no clutch, high and low gear. Jason would give us hand-signals along the way directing us which gear to choose.   He did mention that if any of us rolled, we would likely be protected by the roll bars, but that rolling tended to be a buzzkill for the rest of the afternoon.  He encouraged us to avoid turning sharply at high speed to prevent being buzzkills.

And we were off…

A View from the Knoll

Since the drive to Peek-A-Boo Slot Canyon is only a few miles from the parking area, Jason took us in the opposite direction for an hour of off-road adventures first. I was immediately surprised at how rutted, sandy, and uneven the road was, and at how fun it was to drive through it all – at speeds up to 35 mph. Despite the shocks and suspensions on the RZR, it was still really bumpy, and at times even bone-rattling. But it was undeniably fun. And I never felt, at any time, that we were at risk of rolling.

Our first destination was Red Knoll – an isolated hill in the area.  We took the RZRs along a rocky road to the top.  Here we were greeted with an amazing 360 degree view.  We could see Zion National Park to the north, Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park to the west, and the Escalante-Grand Staircase National Monument to the east.  We could even spot the southern edge Bryce Canyon National Park in the distance

Hiking Peek-A-Boo Slot Canyon

After descending from Red Knoll, we followed Jason across more sandy, rutted trails to Peek-A-Boo Slot Canyon.  We parked our RZRs in the ravine near the canyon’s mouth and headed in for the 0.7 mile round trip hike.

The hike through Peek-A-Boo is relatively flat and sandy.  Large rocks do protrude from the pathway at times, and a small ladder is set along the way to help hikers get past one particular elevated break in the mostly flat path.  The hike ends in a rock alleyway with a high end wall too difficult to climb.

The canyon features many opportunities for those classic slot canyon photos of beautiful low-lit spaces between narrow irregular sandstone walls….

A 0.7 mile hike through a slot canyon takes a lot longer than the average 0.7 mile hike. It requires time to take in all the beauty….. and stop for multiple photos. Plus the canyon was fairly crowded.  Several tour groups had made their way to the canyon along with private vehicles too.  So, many extra stops were required to let others pass, or wait for the perfect photo spot to clear out.

After 45 minutes or so in the canyon, we hopped back on the RZRs and headed back the few remaining miles to the parking lot.

Final Thoughts and Tips

We arrived at the Kanab Tour Company office at 12:30 and finished our tour just before 4pm.  The cost for this full afternoon activity varies according to the size of UTV required by your group.  Our 2-seater cost $269 plus tax.

Our guide Jason grew up in Kanab, riding all of these trails and exploring all the canyons.  His insight was a great addition to the afternoon.

While hiking through a slot canyon, it’s easy to forget to watch your step as you gawk at the towering rock walls. A member of our group tripped over a rock and hit his head firmly against a sandstone wall (fortunately, he was OK).

Some visitors to Peek-A-Boo Canyon hike from the parking area.  AllTrails.com lists the round trip distance at 8.7 miles.

It was unseasonably cool during our October visit with afternoon temperatures in the mid 50s.  Layers are important at this time of year when exploring slot canyons anyway.  The canyon itself is much cooler with those high walls blocking out most of the sun. And never enter a slot canyon when there are thunderstorms in the the area. Flash flooding is a life-threatening risk through slot canyons in rainy weather.

The following day, we went canyoneering through another area slot canyon called Ladder Canyon. This slot canyon’s floor wasn’t so flat, and required us to rappel (from 7 different heights), slide, and spider walk our way from the beginning to the end. Click here to read my post about canyoneering through Ladder Slot Canyon. I’ve also written a Thorough Guide to Kanab – there are so many other things to do in the area surrounding this perfectly located town.

And here are some alternative options through Viator for seeing Peek-A-Boo canyon without needing to drive a UTV yourself.

I’m happy that you enjoyed the slot canyons and other wonderful explorations. I love the absolute beauty and stillness of the desert. I live in Kanab and go out almost every day to the desert to feed my soul with my dogs. I am running out of places to go with the relative explosion of atv tours. The quiet stillness of my favorite spots is gone. The once familiar trails I hike have been obliterated by the atvs to the point that I got lost trying to find the original trail. Delicate desert flora, cacti, sages and cliff roses are ground into the sand by roaring atv’s. It’s really hard to see and I grieve for the loss of such beauty. I guess it’s inevitable this happens.

Thanks for sharing that perspective

Such stunning photos Steven, Peek-a-boo canyon looks incredible. The Kanab tour is something we would love to do, it sounds so much fun and we enjoy hiking. Utah is certainly high up on our list for places to visit in the US.

I wish you peoplw would quit advetising these Southern Utah gems! These areas are not Disneyland with an infastructure to accomodate millions if people? Too many people just trash and trample! Now please just enjoy it and move on your way! Thank You

I can see your point. I avoided the National Parks in Utah for years because I thought were too crowded. Especially Zion

What a fun way to see the slot canyons! I think I’d want them to drive for me. Haha. I’ve always wanted to visit this area of Utah just to see them. Your photos are so pretty and I can imagine you could spend hours taking photos. That does seem a little confusing as many slot canyons have the same names!

Driving is half the fun!!

' src=

You really are getting into the nooks and crannies of Utah now! I would love to take this tour and the ATVs would be a real pull. When we visited Antelope Canyon, we had to travel there in special 4 x 4 minibuses (there is no option. Visitors to AC have to take the guided tours) so driving these karts would be so much more exciting. The canyon looks awesome. Looking forward to reading about the next one where you had to abseil down. Makes Antelope Canyon look very tame!

Antelope Canyon is an hour or so away from Kanab but I decided to not go there for that very reason. Too tame. I want some excitement with my slot canyon tours!

The photos are like from another planet. Stunning! Sounds like a real adventure, would love to visit it one day.

Southern Utah really seems like another planet sometimes

I am so mesmerized by slot canyons. So surreal and beautiful! This Peek-A-Boo Slot Canyon ATV tour in Kanab, Utah looks and sounds like a fun experience.

It was my first slot canyon and fulfilled every expectation

Those UTVs look like a whole lot of fun, Stephen. How funny that there is a canyon confusion. Your pictures look amazing. When will we read about your climbing/abseiling adventure?

It’s coming next Stefan. It was great fun too as you will see in a few weeks

' src=

What an incredible place to see, I can’t get enough of the unique formations and I love the peek-a-boo name! I’m definitely adding Kanab to the list, also I’ve never been to Utah, so that will be an adventure for me too!

Hope you get the chance to visit Lisa

It’s amazing that all these parks are so close together. You definitely have a lot of beauty near you. My parents have talked about taking me up to to some of these national parks when I visit. I’ll have to let them know to check out Kanab!

There is so much to see in that part of Utah. Hope you have time to see as much as you can!

I have always wanted to hike through a Utah slot canyon. I enjoyed reading about your visit and your amazing photos. Hiring a RZR is the way to go for this!

A good day all around. Hope you get the chance sometime

John CarpeDiemEire

If I was only looking at the photos here, I would assume I was reading about the new Mad Max movie. This is super cool. The RZR’s look like so much fun. I didn’t realise there was tons of canyons like this. I thought antelope canyon was unique. It’s a pricey tour, but how often can you do this.

I agree that it cost more than I usually like to spend on a tour, but it was so worth it!

I’m so jealous! We tried to take the van to Peek-a-Boo, but couldn’t make it all the way without 4-wheel drive. Next time! Saving this post so I have all the tips!

So wise of you not to try and go all the way. Getting stuck in that sand would not have been a good experience

Kanab Utah: A Paradise for Outdoor Adventures!

C onsidering that I have visited the little town of Kanab, Utah six times in the past six years, I feel like I have become a bit of an expert on some of the reasons why Kanab is a great place to visit and use as a “home base” for any trip to Southern Utah or Northern Arizona.

So What's So Special About Kanab?

Kanab is a special little city that tends to capture people's hearts so they keep returning year after year. Mr. Misadventures and I have been there so many times that it feels like a second home and we have watched in wonder at how its grown, expanded, and matured.

When we first started going, there was hardly any infrastructure. Now there are so many choices and even more things to do. We never get bored!

The Kanab area is a great place for anyone interested in outdoor recreation, as it's famous for its unique landmarks, canyons, and red rock formations. There are many hikes in the area – including the famous hike to The Wave – and outdoor activities are available for people of all ability levels, from beginning hikers to those ready for more advanced adventures.

And if you don't hike, no worries – many of the national parks offer a scenic byway or drive so you can still bask in the beauty of the area.

Many people opt to stay in Kanab if they're doing a national parks road trip but it's also a great place to stay for several days, day-tripping to a different park or canyon and returning to your Kanab hotel each night.

Additionally, Kanab's self-proclaimed title is “Little Hollywood”, as it's made its appearance in more than one Hollywood western (actually more like 100) and there are still movie sets to visit.

Not to mention the local history and Native American artifacts that can be found at places like Moqui Cave and the Kanab Heritage House Museum.

Truthfully, Kanab is just a special place and deserves to be at the top of the list of places to visit in the United States.

Where is Kanab, Utah?

Kanab is located in Kane County, Utah, just over the border from Arizona. It's one of the best places to use as a home base when exploring the Southwest and the national parks, as it provides easy access to parks like Bryce Canyon and Zion – and even the Grand Canyon!

It's also within easy driving distance from several major cities. Here are some driving times:

  • Kanab to Las Vegas – 3 hours
  • Kanab to Salt Lake City – 5 hours
  • Kanab to Phoenix – 5.5 hours
  • Kanab to St. George – 1.5 hours
  • Kanab to Cedar City – 1.5 hours

Parks, National Parks, and Canyons Near Kanab Utah

One of the main draws to Kanab, Utah is the spectacular national and state parks and canyons in the area. It's an outdoor lovers' paradise, with the chance to hike slot canyons and sand caves and see some unforgettable rock formations.

If you love to be outside, you'll never run out of things to do in Kanab, Utah! Here are a few of the best canyons and parks you won't want to miss.

Bryce Canyon National Park

Kanab UT makes the perfect home base for Bryce Canyon National Park , located under an hour and a half away. It's one of the Mighty Five National Parks in Utah. Bryce Canyon, with its many amphitheater formations, is one of the top sites to see in Utah.

There are many hikes at the national park, ranging from the easy Navajo Loop to the strenuous Fairyland Loop. Sunset Point is the perfect spot to catch the views, including of Thor's Hammer and Silent City, without much walking.

There are also opportunities in/near the park for horseback riding, mountain biking, ATV tours, and ranger-guided activities like full moon hikes and astronomy programs.

Zion National Park

Zion (another of the Mighty Five) is one of the most famous national parks in the United States and Kanab is the perfect place to base yourself for a visit, as the distance from Kanab Utah to Zion National Park is just 30 miles.

Within the park, you'll find mountains, mesas, slot canyons, natural arches, and more. Some of the most popular places in the park are Angels Landing and Echo Canyon. There's also the Zion Canyon Scenic Drive, for those who prefer epic views without a hike.

Belly of the Dragon

If you're heading to Bryce or Zion from Kanab, you'll want to add a stop to the Belly of the Dragon. It's a short hike, just .5 miles, through a man-made tunnel. It was originally a water culvert under the highway but it's now a fun, family-friendly hiking path.

Capital Reef National Park

Capitol Reef National Park is my personal favorite national park in Utah. It is one of the Mighty Five but I think it often gets overlooked. It is a bit of a stretch from Kanab, it is 3 hours and 15 minutes away, but if you started super early in the morning and got back to Kanab late, you could do it in a day trip.

Grand Canyon National Park

Kanab, UT is a great base for those who want to explore the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, as it's just under a 2-hour drive. This is the least visited part of the park, so a great place to explore if you're hoping to escape some of the massive crowds.

Some of the most popular things to do in the Grand Canyon North Rim are the short Bright Angel Point Hike from the Grand Canyon Lodge and a scenic drive.

We also camped at The Toroweap Overlook which is 3 hours and 15 minutes away and has great North Rim views as well.

Pipe Spring National Park

Imagine finding an oasis in the middle of a vast desert. That's exactly what happened here in the Arizona Strip between the Grand Canyon and the Vermillion Cliffs. Pipe Spring National Park has been a gathering spot for centuries, attracting hunter-gatherers, Spanish explorers, and Mormon settlers fleeing persecution.

The park is 20 minutes from Kanab.

As you explore the area, you'll come across the traditional kahns, built with juniper branches and brush, that once provided shelter for the Kaibab Paiutes. There's also a fascinating ranch house known as “Winsor Castle” that housed the Mormon settlers.

And if you're up for a little adventure, take a stroll along the Ridge Trail. It's a leisurely hike that rewards you with breathtaking views of the Arizona Strip, Mount Trumbull, the Kaibab Plateau, and Kanab Canyon.

FAQs About Kanab & National Parks

How far is kanab from bryce and zion.

Kanab to Bryce Canyon National Park is a 90-minute drive, while Kanab to Zion is a short 30-minute drive.

How far is it from Kanab to Grand Canyon?

Kanab to Grand Canyon is just under a 2-hour drive. You will be closest to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon.

Can you enter Zion from Kanab?

You can't enter Zion National Park from Kanab but the entrance is just a short 30-minute drive away, making it the perfect base for your national park trip.

Vermilion Cliffs National Monument

Vermillion Cliffs National Monument spans over 280,000 acres in northern Arizona, bordering the Kaibab National Forest and the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. It's about a bit over an hour's drive from Kanab and one of the top outdoor recreation spots.

Note that there is no visitors center in the national monument, so if you have questions or want more info, you'll need to check with the BLM Kanab Visitor Center.

Coyote Buttes

Some of the most popular attractions within the monument are Paria Canyon and Coyote Buttes. Coyote Buttes is broken down into two parts – Coyote Buttes South and Coyote Buttes North. Coyote Buttes North is home to the famous The Wave, which I discuss more below.

You used to be able to explore South Coyote Buttes on your own without a permit, but that is no longer the case. 10 people are allowed to visit Coyote Buttes South per day. Applications for the permits are available every day from 9:30 am-10 am. A drawing is held daily.

Like White Pocket (see more below) South Coyote Buttes is a remote area that requires a 4 x 4 high clearance vehicle to access. 2WD and AWD vehicles WILL get stuck. You need to be comfortable driving in deep sand and navigating a remote wilderness area (we recommend skill with Gaig maps as well).

The lottery is held in the BLM office. You will need to bring a pen or pencil, have your car license plate number, and an emergency contact person.

If you win the lottery, the fee is $5 per person and dog. They ONLY accept cash or checks – NO credit cards!

White Pocket, known as the “lesser Wave” is another popular attraction within Vermilion Cliffs and does not require a permit to visit. The stunning rock formations tend to have a white or tan cap, which gives them their name. A must-visit, especially if you can't get permits for the other sites.

We have been to White Pocket 7 times. Our visits have occurred at various times of the year. We have done single-day trips and camping trips.

Here is my full guide to White Pocket!

Locations like White Pocket and Coyote Buttes will make you forget the Wave altogether. The colors in these rock formations are equally as fantastical and you can explore for hours thinking you are on an alien planet.

The number one reason to visit Kanab is to see the Wave in Arizona. We've been twice and are hoping for a third-times-the-charm situation on our upcoming trip in November (2023).

This is a magical, and well-protected, sandstone rock formation on many photographers and hikers' natural bucket lists. You access it via a 5-mile hike and you MUST have a permit for the Wave.

There are only 20 daily permits given out.

As of March 15, 2022, the BLM implemented a new mobile-based system for obtaining one of the daily lottery permits to hike the Wave. The new system is called the Coyote Buttes North Daily Lottery (The Wave).

All permits to hike in Coyote Buttes North are issued via an online lottery held by recreation.gov.

There are 2 BLM offices in Kanab, the one that performs the Wave lottery is located at 745 East Highway 89. Generally, between 150  to 300 people are trying for a permit on a daily. The lottery is at 9:00 a.m., so get there early.

It's easier to get a permit if you are a single hiker, also your chances are better in December, January, or February.

If you win a permit, it is for the next day.

So whether you are a lucky winner, or if you don't get a permit (the more likely scenario) you are in a prime position to head to all the amazing locations just minutes away. While visiting the Wave is pretty spectacular , there are still PLENTY of things to visit.

Angel Canyon

Angel Canyon is located just a few miles outside of Kanab and is most famous for being home to the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary (more on them below). However, within the property of the sanctuary, are a few different trails.

Hidden Lake is a 1.5-mile trail that takes you to a water-filled cave underneath a cliff, as well as past Puebloan ruins and ancient pictographs on the rock wall. Angels Overlook is another 1.5-mile hike, over some steep inclines. You can start or end near Angel Village, where you can grab lunch.

Antelope Canyon

Antelope Canyon is one of the most famous things to do near Kanab Utah. Located about an hour and a half away on private Navajo Nation land, Antelope Canyon is a slot canyon with stunning natural architecture that's been shaped by water and wind erosion.

To visit Antelope Canyon, you'll need to join a guided tour and get your entry ticket in advance. Most people hike the Upper Antelope Canyon, though the more adventurous may appreciate the challenge of the Lower Antelope Canyon, which requires navigating stairways and ladders to enter the canyon.

Peek-A-Boo Slot Canyon

Peek-a-Boo Slot Canyon, also known as Red Canyon, is considered one of the most beautiful canyons in the area and should be at the top of your list of things to do in Kanab UT. It's a short, easy hike to access the canyon but it is prone to flash floods, which can change the landscape.

You should always check with the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument Visitor Center first.

Spooky Gulch

Spooky Gulch is located in the same area as Peekaboo Canyon Kanab and can actually be combined with it to make a longer loop hike.

Note that some scrambling is required to navigate Spooky Gulch and it does get quite narrow in some spaces, so if you're claustrophobic, this probably isn't the hike for you.

Lake Powell

Lake Powell is located 90 minutes from Kanab in Page, Arizona. It's an artificial reservoir the Colorado River and a very popular boating destination. You can even rent a houseboat to cruise around!

While you're in the area, be sure to check out the famous hike to Horseshoe Bend as well. The parking lot is just 3 miles outside of Page.

Buckskin Gulch

Located just an hour from Kanab, Buckskin Gulch is one of the biggest attractions in the area. It's the longest slot canyon in the Southwest. While you can make a day trip out of it, serious hikers can go on a 4-day adventure to hike the entire 20 miles.

It's found between the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument in Kanab and the Paria Canyon-Vermillion Cliffs Wilderness in Arizona, with multiple trailheads available.

The most easily accessible for a day hike is the Wire Pass Trailhead, which is considered “moderately easy”, while other parts of the canyon are prone to flash floods, quicksand, and other obstacles.

Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park

Located between Kanab and Zion National Park, Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park is an underrated state park that you need to add to your list of things to do in Kanab! It's a unique destination as the sand dunes are moved by wind, so it's an ever-changing landscape.

In addition to hiking, there are areas for off-roading and sandboarding as well, so it can be quite the place for an adrenaline rush!

It is stunning at sunset. It is our favorite sunset spot when we are staying in Kanab.

Kodachrome Basin

This hidden gem, named after Kodak Film Corp, boasts vibrant sandstone spires, majestic red rock mountains, and breathtaking blue skies. It's an hour and 45 minutes from Kanab.

Kodachrome Basin is home to a mesmerizing array of rock formations in hues of red, yellow, pink, white, and brown. The towering sandstone chimney spires are remnants of ancient springs or geysers, standing tall against the backdrop of clear blue skies.

Check out the breathtaking views at Kodachrome Basin from the many short trails in the area. This picturesque area was rightfully named by the National Geographic Society, with the blessing of Kodak Film Corp.

The park is located at 2905 S. Kodachrome State Park Rd. There is an entrance fee of $8 per vehicle and is open year-round.

Don't miss out on this captivating destination that is only a stone's throw away from the famous Bryce Canyon National Park.

More Things To Do Near Kanab, Utah

Once you've hiked and explored the nearby canyons and parks to your heart's content, there's still more to discover near the small town of Kanab. Seriously – you could spend weeks here and not get bored!

Here are some of my favorite non-hiking things to do in Kanab, Utah, and other nearby attractions.

Best Friends Animal Sanctuary

Best Friends Animal Sanctuary Kanab is known all over the world for its animal rescue training and its volunteer program. You can apply to volunteer online and even stay on the grounds in one of their guest cabins (reserve in advance!) There are many programs to choose from and your experience will be truly rewarding.

Besides the magnificent backdrop of the Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument, there's a magical pet cemetery, Angel's Rest which is a sacred experience, and delicious vegan and vegetarian food in their cafe. If you have any love for animals, you will want to visit Best Friends.

Toadstool Hoodoos

Do not miss an easy hike and fun photo opportunity at the Toadstool Hoodoos (GPS Coordinates 37.101310, -111.873169) 45 miles east of Kanab.

A cool stop just 10 minutes from Kanab, Moqui Cave is a history museum filled with Native American artifacts and dinosaur tracks. Yes, an eclectic combination, which is part of what makes it worth a visit. They also have a unique collection of fluorescent minerals that you can see under UV light.

Hot Air Balloon Festival

You've likely seen photos of hot air balloons rising about the beautiful red rock cliffs. While hot air balloon rides happen throughout the year, there's one big annual event worth checking out if you'll be in the area – the Kanab Balloon Festival, also known as Kanab Balloons and Tunes Festival.

The 3-day festival takes place one weekend each year – in 2024 the dates will be February 16 to 18 – with about 40 hot air balloon pilots lifting off from the formal Coral Cliffs Golf Course.

In addition to the hot air balloons, there's live music and other fun activities throughout the weekend.

Kanab Heritage House Museum

To learn a little more about the Kanab area and its history, stop by the Kanab Heritage House Museum. Considered the, “first modern home in Kane Country,” it was built by Henry Bowman in 1892 and was the home of several prominent families throughout the history of Kanab.

Guided tours are available but if you stop by outside opening hours, you can still take a self-guided tour of the property.

Little Hollywood Museum

Kanab has the self-proclaimed title of “Little Hollywood”, with over 100 different Hollywood productions having been filmed in the unique landscape. “Deadwood Coach” in 1924 was said to be the first movie filmed in Kanab, but many others followed. Most recently, Disney Pixar's “John Carter of Mars”.

As you might expect, Hollywood had a huge impact on the growth of Kanab – and that's what you'll find at the Little Hollywood Museum, including plenty of movie posters of Western legends and film set artifacts.

In addition to the museum, you can also find a gift shop, restaurant, and more. It's definitely with a stop!

Where to Eat & Drink in Kanab

Truth be told there are not a ton of dining options in Kanab. Thankfully there are a couple of gems. And these few make it worth it! You will also find several fast-food restaurants and chains like Pizza Hut Kanab, 2 grocery stores to pick up picnic supplies, and a handful of restaurants.

Whether you're looking for fine dining or casual eats, my favorites are listed below.

Willow Canyon Outdoor

This shop serves the absolute best coffee in Southern Utah! Sure you can pick up some great outdoor gear, or in my case, new boots when mine literally disintegrated around my feet, and the owner is super knowledgeable about the area, he is an ex-geologist, but above and beyond that, that makes a really damn good cup of coffee!

Address : Located at 263 South 100 East.

Rocking V Cafe

This is my absolute favorite restaurant in Kanab and Mr. Misdaventures and I have eaten here several times. Rocking V serves slow food in a really cool setting, their building was a former mercantile shop dating back to 1892.

What's The Weather Like in Kanab, Utah?

Weather in Kanab varies throughout the year. For most of the year, it's mild and dry as the small city rarely sees more than 5 days of rain a month (and many months are much less). Heavy rain can bring flash floods in the canyons so make sure to pay attention to weather conditions. Check with the BLM (Bureau of Land Management) office.

However, as you would expect in the desert – summer is HOT. Expect average temperatures in the 90s from June to August and sometimes into September. Always have lots of water with you.

It's also important to be prepared for big temperature changes too, as the night-time average can be quite chilly, even if the days are hot.

Kanab weather in the winter is cold, with average lows in the mid-20s, but the average highs can still be in the 40s and 50s. It can snow which can impact your outdoor activities. If you are doing off-road activities during the winter I recommend that you hire a local tour guide/company as they know the roads and have the right equipment to deal with winter weather conditions.

When Is The Best Time To Visit Kanab?

The best time to visit Kanab is in the fall when the weather is still warm but not as hot as the summer months. The summer months can be incredibly busy too and the parks are much more enjoyable when they're not quite so crowded.

Late spring and into early June is also a pleasant time in Kanab.

One thing to note – be sure to check the opening dates of the national parks, as some do close in the winter.

Local Tours

Many of the outdoor activities include routes that are rather difficult and you must have a high-clearance 4×4 vehicle. We generally went with a local guide, I highly recommend Dreamland Safari Tours , we went with them several times, even for overnight camping.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Kanab is right on the Utah and Arizona border. They are in different time zones, so depending on your location you will need to pay attention to what time zone the meeting point is!

After living in Kanab for several wonderful years, Jeff knew he was missing something in fully appreciating the wonder of this amazing land. His children had spent their childhood roaming all over their backyard mountains, but there is only so much ground you can cover while hiking. He realized that in order to really explore the area, he needed an off-road vehicle to get him places. So he set out to purchase what we call the Good-Old-Green Jeep, a choice that would help him discover his new favorite pastime.  Pretty much anyone who goes off-roading more than once in a blue moon has seen Jeff and his family out in the local hills, exploring the beautiful terrain in that trusty Good-Old-Green Jeep.

In the years since 2016 we have logged hundreds, if not thousands of hours in the magical hills surrounding kanab. jeff found great joy sharing his discoveries with friends and family and bringing them along to see the incredible sites. before long, he started bringing anybody he could convince to going with him on his “indiana jones-like” rides. the results every time afterward left passengers with comments like “wow, that was the most amazing ride i have ever been on” or “i didn’t know jeeps could drive at that angle”., that junky good-old-green jeep was worth much more than its monetary value. though a little old and bumpy, it was a fabulous time on wheels, a chariot for unforgettable experiences, and a way to bring people together as they shared the beauty of this magnificent area. , pretty soon jeff and julie knew they had to share this with everyone with an extensive knowledge of the area and years of experience, jeff and julie decided to open up a jeep tour business and coral cliffs tours of kanab was born. newer jeeps and larger off-road vehicles were purchased so we could accommodate bigger families and groups, thus allowing us to help as many people as possible discover the magic of kanab., later, jeff and julie also added coral cliffs townhomes to the mix to help accommodate our guests looking for an affordable place to stay. this is a great place to come back to and relax in your own hot tub after a long day of hiking, jeeping, or visiting the surrounding parks enjoy a wonderful stay in our cozy rooms just down the street from the kanab blm visitor center. , coral cliff tours was created with a vision of providing visitors to this majestic area a chance to experience some of the incredible nature right here in our backyard for an affordable price. the destinations you will see are unique, and the journey to get there is equally impressive , whether you are looking for just an afternoon of fun, or an intense full day experience, or anything in between, our team will help put something together to fit your vacation schedule. with the best rates around, and the best guides in town, it would be our pleasure to help you get the most out of your stay while here in kanab.

This is one of the easier places to hike and see evidence of ancient life.  The tracks lie in a beautiful sandstone wash where you will feel remote and quiet.  Our vote is that this is one of nature’s perfect yoga/meditation spots!  We frequently hear, “I can’t believe I’m walking in the very place the dinosaurs walked! This is so cool!”.  Although it is not technical at all, it is a great experience to marvel at the history of the rocks we walk on here!

  • Add on to Peekaboo Slot Canyon
  • Easy to combine with the Rosie Canyon Petroglyphs
  • A fun complement to the South Fork Pictographs
  • For the “Best of Kanab Southwest Tour”, the Dinosaur Tracks are a great option!

  •  We rank the overall hike a 3/10 difficulty, unless you want to take a back route, then it’s a 6.

White Pocket is a unique landscape where we wander around in the 1.5 square miles of white “brain rock”, and take in the amazing red, yellow, and orange swirls erupting out of the otherwise uniform out of this worldly formation.  White Pocket offers a variety of formations and colors.  It is our most popular 7-8 hour tour.  We love being out there because it feels like a brief trip to another planet!
