Kozhikode (Calicut)

Northern Kerala's largest city, Kozhikode (still widely known as Calicut), has been a prosperous trading town since at least the 14th century and was once the capital of the formidable Zamorin dynasty. Vasco da Gama first landed at Kappad, 9 miles (15km) north of the city, in 1498, on his way to colonize part of the subcontinent for king and country (Portugal that is) – though the Zamorins resisted and remained independent until Tipu Sultan's army invaded in the 1760s, with the city then colonized by the British in 1792.

The Regional Science Center has outdoor science displays as well. The section called Giants of Nature is a huge aquarium which is a popular attraction here.

10. Thusharagiri Fall

While visiting hill stations near Kozhikode, make sure that you take a break at the breathtaking Thusharagiri Falls. Two streams originate from the Western Ghats and meet at this point to create the Chalipuzzha River. The river further creates three waterfalls and the free-falling water, as stunning to watch as exciting to feel, makes for one of the best places to visit near Kozhikode. There are also plenty of activities you take part in, such as trekking or rock climbing or simply explore the lush green forest around.

11. Kakkayam Dam

Kakkayam Dam is a famous picnic spot and is popular among the tourist places in Kozhikode. It is known for its scenic beauty and tranquil surroundings that make you leave behind all the stress and simply get lost in the calmness. Though the dam is small in size, it more than compensates with the small waterfalls around it. There are a few options for outdoor activities here, such as exploring the local flora and fauna, taking a boat ride, hiking through the dense forests and more. There is also a hanging bridge on the waterfall which is a popular tourist attraction. Surely a great place to visit in Kozhikode and spend some quality time with your family.

12. Mother of God Cathedral

If you want to experience the rich culture of the city, you can visit the Mother of God Cathedral, which is located at a distance of just 1.5 kilometres from the Calicut Railway Station. It portrays Roman architecture and is said to be built around 1513 AD by the Portuguese. In 1724, the church was renovated where stones and mortar were used to bring durability.

Best Time To Visit Kozhikode

Today, Kozhikode is the third-largest city of Kerala and draws tourists throughout the year due to its vast tourist attractions and pleasant weather. The best time to visit the beautiful places in Kozhikode is during the months of October to March. The weather during these months is pleasant and habitable for tourists, as compared to other months.

Summers in the city are too hot and humid, with temperatures ranging between 37 and 39 degrees Celsius. Monsoon brings heavy rains, which although cools down the soaring temperatures, might hinder tourists activities. This is also the time to experience several festivals and fairs of the city. Winter months are the most favourable for vacations in the city of Kozhikode and sightseeing as the climate remains quite pleasant during this time, and the minimum temperature dips up to 15 degrees Celsius on some days.

Good food, friendly people and great opportunities to explore and enjoy God’s own country, that’s Kozhikode in a nutshell. The city is not just a great spot to spend time with your friends and family but is also a splendid honeymoon destination where you can spend a great time with your better half. Located on the north side of the scenic state of Kerala, Kozhikode has always been a popular destination for its backwaters. These backwaters are a distinctive feature of the area and have been generously blessed with abundant natural beauty, dense greenery and exotic flora and fauna. The palm-fringed rivers, lakes and canals of Kozhikode are decorated with attractive beauty. The calm of these undisturbed waters is infectious and instils a sense of peace and serenity within you.

Beypore Beach, Calicut

Beypore Beach is situated at the mouth of the Chaliyar River, 10 km from Kozhikode Railway Station. Now an important port and fishing port, this place was also an important commercial and maritime centre during the days of early Arab and Chinese travellers and Europeans.

Beypore Beach is a commercial centre for the construction of ships and has been in existence here for more than 1000 years. This shipyard is famous for making a distinctive ship known as ‘Uru.’ One of the main attractions of Beypore is its magnificent 2 km long stone bridge called Pulimoodu, made entirely of stones, which leads to the sea. Thali Temple, Calicut

Thali Temple is a 14th-century temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located in the heart of Kozhikode City, 1 km from Kozhikode Railway Station.

This temple was destructed by Tippu Sultan and Hyder Ali during their invasion of Kozhikode and was later renovated and rebuilt by Swami Thirumulapad, the then Zamorin of Calicut. The two-story sanctuary features artistic stone sculptures and wood carvings with scenes from the Puranas. Very high walls and an expansive temple pond are some of the special features of this temple. The temple complex also houses the shrine of Lord Krishna.

For those who are looking forward to spending a quiet day by the sea, look no further than the Thikkoti Light House.

Kuttichira Mosque

Kuttichira Mosque is one of the unique places to visit in Calicut . Have you seen a mosque like a temple? Well, if that sounds like an oxymoron, you ‘re going to read that right. The lack of copulas and minarets makes the design of this mosque like a temple. In fact, this mosque was designed by skilled craftsmen in the traditional architectural style. The Mishka Masjid in Kuttichira is the oldest mosque in Kozhikode and was named after the rich Arab merchant Nakhuda Mishkal who built it in the 14th century. This is a four-storey building backed by wooden pillars, which stands for the architectural grandeur of Kerala.

Jama Palli M osque

Calicut has a rich Islamic history, primarily because Arab merchants worked along the coast of Malabar, which dates back to the 7th century. The town has many old mosques, but one that caught my attention was the Jama Palli Mosque, which dates back to the 14th century. This is a one-storey building that can accommodate up to 1,000 worshippers at a time. This mosque has the largest floor area among the Kerala mosques and has intricate wood carvings on the ceilings. The wooden walls and ceilings on the inside are carved with sacred Arabic text verses and resemble a temple. The extensive use of wood is a distinctive feature of this mosque.

This is a relatively large area that once housed a castle, which has now been turned into a lawn and a park next to a reservoir, the water of which is a big source of drinking. CALICUT – The ancient city of spices

Calicut also known as Kozhikode is a city that lie in the Malabar Coast of Kerala and was once called the “city of spices” for its role as a major trading point of eastern spices.

Kozhikode has a long recorded history according to which the Arab merchants have traded with this shore for as early as the 7 th century. Later the Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama set foot on Indian soil at Kappad in 1493 and opened a trading route between Europe and Malabar.

It was once the capital of the Samoothiris (Zamorins) of Calicut and later also became the capital of the Malabar district under the British rule. In 2012, Kozhikode was named the “City of Sculptures” or “Shilpa Nagaram” due to the number of architectural sculptures located in various parts of the city.

The land of rich traditions and cultures, Kozhikode is the home to the folk songs and ballads known as “Vadakkan Pattukal” which celebrate the valor and might of “Kalarippayattu” and its champions. The land and the lives of its people are also deeply entwined with Ghazals, Hindusthani music and football.

Kozhikode is famous for its cuisine which includes the Kozhikkodan biriyani, chattippathiri, irachippathiri, pazham nirachathu, unnakkaya, sulaimani etc. which are mouthwatering dishes indigenous to the land.

Kozhikode is a land of amazing food, warm people and a long history to boast of and hence definitely finds a place in the tourism map of Kerala.

The charming beach is often visited by tourists looking to indulge in adventurous activities like surfing, paragliding and kayaking etc.

Kozhikode, formerly called Calicut was the traditional capital of Northern Kerala under the Samuthiri rule. Calicut, the most important city of Malabar region of Kerala, was a leading trading centre for spices on the West Coast of India during the medieval period. The place is historically famous as the Portuguese led by Vasco da Gama first landed in India, at Kappad near Kozhikode in 1498 AD. He was the first European to reach India via the sea route, around the southern cape of Africa. The major tourist destinations include Pazhassirajah Museum, Art Gallery, Kozhikode Beach, Thikkoti Lighthouse, and Dolphin's point.

Best time to visit Kozhikode ( Calicut )

Kozhikode is the best of all worlds, with beach glamour, cultural and historical landmarks, and bountiful nature in and around the city.  As such, it is undoubtedly an all-weather destination, whether you want to sightsee, lounge at the beach or engage in outdoor adventures. Choose your timing based on the type of holiday you’re after, and enjoy this historical city!

The monsoon season spans from June through to October. Torrential rain and widespread flooding make this an imprudent time to undertake outdoor adventure activities, but it’s the perfect period to take advantage of off-season prices and explore the cultural delights of Kozhikode. The city will be teeming with vibrant hues of green, thriving flowers and vociferous wildlife.

September, at the tail end of the monsoon season, is the ideal time to visit. Prices are still off-season, but the mountains, forests and waterfalls are at the peak of their luscious green beauty. Furthermore, around the August/September period Keralites celebrate the Onam Harvest Festival with Snake Boat Races, in a tradition dating back to paddy-field workers showing off their skills in the water as they harvested the rice. Today, villagers emulate them by competing against each other in beautifully handcrafted boats.

The weather is cooler and drier between October and February. While this is the perfect time to visit beaches, beware of the peak season prices from December to January, as well as larger crowds. If Kozhikode is not your principal beach destination, I would avoid it during these months. The Vadakara and Shivatri festivals are celebrated within this season.

Between March and May, Kerala’s summer hits its peak, but the weather remains mild and humid in Kozhikode. Touring around the city visiting the many sites will probably still be comfortable, and this is the ideal time for bird watching in the many parks. The Pooram, Kaliatta Mahotasavam and Memunda festivals are celebrated in this period.

How to Reach Kozhikode ( Calicut )

Despite being the largest city in northern Kerala, Kozhikode remains a serene coastal port overflowing with verdant greenery, languid beaches and vibrant cultural history.  A locus of trade since the 7th century, Arabic, Portuguese, British, French and Danish traders have vied for control of the textile trade for all they’re worth. It is well connected to all the major cities in India and abroad by Flights, Trains and Buses.

calicut best tourism

Kozhikode comes well-equipped with its own international airport. Calicut International Airport has regular flights connecting it to the Gulf countries, as well as services to major cities in India like Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Coimbatore and Hyderabad. From the airport, jump on a bus, pre-booked taxi or cab to your final destination

calicut best tourism

The train station at Kozhikode, located quite centrally to the famous Mananchira Square, is well-connected to most major cities throughout India. Trains are one of the most convenient and comfortable ways to travel around Kerala, and India in general. Buy your tickets online or at the train station, sit back, and enjoy the scenic trip through breathtaking landscapes.

calicut best tourism

Kozhikode also has its own long-distance bus station, connecting the city to local towns and villages as well as major cities throughout the country. The state-owned KSRTC buses run regularly to and from Kozhikode, and private coaches can also be arranged. While buses are inexpensive and convenient, they are likely to get very crowded and can be uncomfortable if you’re travelling with a lot of luggage

6 Must See Tourist Places in Calicut

Calicut was the capital of Malabar in the north of Kerala when Zamorins ruled. It was the Spice Capital and very prosperous. This attracted  foreigners who found the rulers friendly and tolerant. The Arabs were the first to arrive. They were followed by Chinese, Portuguese, Dutch and finally the British. The rivalry between them resulted in battles during the medieval period. Few of the Tourist Places in Calicut is mentioned here.

The Arab influence caused many locals to become Muslims; as a result the city is dotted with  mosques. It is said that the name Calicut came from the hand woven cloth calico which was made here.  In local language t he city is called Kozhikode.

There are a number of good hotels in the city, so you can spend a couple of days visiting some of the nearby attractions. Here are 6 must see tourist places around Calicut city.

The city nestles on the coast of the Arabian Sea. It is about 1.2 m above sea level. The coastline extends  to a length of 15 km. Two piers which are crumbling and the old lighthouse still stand recalling the times when foreign vessels used to anchor near Calicut. The Beach Hospital was built by the British. The Beach Hotel is one of the oldest in Calicut, it was mainly for the British planters to spend weekends away from the plantations. During the last few years many high-rise apartments, the stately Corporation office etc were built.

If you arrive in the month of January you can get a taste of various Indian cultural activities during the Malabar Mahotsavam. The important concerts and the concluding “fireworks”are held at the beach.

Viewing the Sunset is relaxing. During the monsoon, the sight is unearthly! The sea turns black, lit up by lightning flashes and the surround sound thunder! Awesome!  A sunset in the monsoon is unbelievably colorful. This is one of the Tourist Places in Calicut

Mananchira Square

This forms the heart of the city. The name comes from the large pool of clear water bound by laterite stone steps built by Manavedan Raja  one of the earlier Zamorins. The park around it is tastefully kept with  types of palms, trees and shrubs. Recently there is a move to adorn the city with sculptures and a number of them has come up here. There is an open air theater and a musical fountain. The view of the city from a corner of Mananchira is beautiful indeed! The spire of the Church adds to the beauty. This is another Tourist Places in Calicut

Kappad Beach

Definitely a beautiful beach about 20 km from Calicut. Its historical importance stems from the fact that  Vasco da Gama with his sailors landed here in 1498 in 3 ships.  This was the start of economic relationship between Europeans and this part of India now called Kerala. Quench your thirst with the nature-flavored tender coconut water which is healthful. This is one of the Tourist Places in Calicut

Located 10 km from Calicut, is this ship-building port of Beypore.  It is also one of  of the busiest fishing harbors in Kerala. It was known as such centuries ago. The skilled workmen use the best of wood and build huge “Uru” for those who place orders. Even the rivets used are wooden. Their clientele  were the Arabs who sailed a lot for trade. Such Urus used to be unloaded at the Calicut port using Cranes. We can see the making of an Uru and also the finished product. Miniatures can be bought from the shops around. People board ships to reach Lakshadweep from Beypore; there are cargoships also sailing from Beypore.

Beypore had a beautiful beach and walkway that extends deep into the sea. This is one of the Tourist Places in Calicut

Pazhassi Raja Museum and Art Gallery

Named after the brave ruler who dared to fight the British with the help of tribal warriors, this museum displays old coins, mural paintings and monuments. Art Gallery has some excellent paintings, some by Raja Ravi Varma the old master painter. It is near the city centre. This is one of the Tourist Places in Calicut

Thusharagiri Waterfalls

This is one of the Tourist Places in Calicut. For those who are lovers of Nature , a visit to Thusharagiri Waterfalls about 50 km away is gainful. Far from the mad crowd this  waterfall springs from the high hills among the green forests. You feel cool and fresh. if fond  of trekking you can trek to reach the waterfall. A bath in the big pool is heavenly!

Tourism in Calicut

Calicut or Kozhikode is situated in the south Indian state of Kerala on the southwest coast of the Arabian Sea. The district extends from latitude 11°15' N to 75°49' E. Basking in the idyllic setting of the serene Arabian Sea on the west and mesmeric peaks of the Wayanad hills on the east, this district has all the required ingredients to fascinate a tourist.

There is not much known of the early history of Calicut except for some prehistoric rock-cut caves that have been found at many places of the district. During the Sangam age, the district was under the Chera administration until AD 1122. This was the time when this region was a major center of trade between Kerala and the outside world. The city of Calicut came into existence in the 13th century when Udaiyavar, the king of Ernad, conquered the area around Ponniankar and built a fort at a place called Velapuram, now known as Calicut. Interestingly, the name Calicut is derived from 'calico,' the fine variety of hand-woven cotton cloth said to have originated from this place.

The outer world came to know about India in 1498 when Vasco da Gama came to Calicut and obtained permission to carry out trade from here. Quickly in succession came the English and Dutch. Disputes over the control of Calicut continued for a long time until 1792, when the East India Company went into an agreement with the local Zamori rulers to directly administer this area. Kerala was declared a state in 1956, and Calicut today is one of the most important centers of trade and business in this progressive state.

Fairs & Festivals of Calicut

The most important festivals of the district are Pooram Festival (March/April), Memunda (March/April), Vadakara (November/December), Kaliatta Mahotasavam (March), and Shivratri (February/March).

On April 24, 2024, the MICHELIN Guide revealed the brand new list of One, Two, and Three Key hotels in the United States. In this first ever announcement of MICHELIN Keys in the United States, hotels in Atlanta, California, Chicago, Colorado, Florida, New York, and Washington DC were eligible for the distinction. This announcement of the most outstanding hotels in the country comes four years into a comprehensive refresh of our hotel selection. The MICHELIN Guide now includes over 5,000 hotels across the world, and not a single one is simply a room for the night. These are places that significantly add to your experience as a traveler, each vetted and judged excellent in five categories: architecture and interior design, quality and consistency of service, overall personality and character, value for the price, and a significant contribution to the guest experience in a particular setting. Which brings us back to the Keys. The culmination of countless hours of evaluation by our team of experts, the Key hotels below represent the highlights of our broader selection. Like the MICHELIN Stars for restaurants, the MICHELIN Keys are our most outstanding hotels. In total, the 2024 MICHELIN Guide hotel selection in the United States includes 11 Three Key hotels, 33 Two Key hotels, and 80 One Key hotels. Want to know more about the MICHELIN Key? The Three Key Club in New York City

Expect: The highest luxury and impeccable design in Soho, Midtown, and the Financial District. Within the small club of Three Key hotels in the United States, four make their home in New York City. The Aman New York (Midtown) and Casa Cipriani (the Financial District) both make use of glamorous Beaux Arts buildings, the former a gold-crowned skyscraper in Midtown, the latter a glamorously restored ferry terminal at the very southern tip of Manhattan. Each is a refuge: an elegant, painstakingly designed escape from bustling city life. Meanwhile, two Firmdale hotels round out the list of Three Key hotels in New York City. Each is a quintessential example of the style and execution of the group’s co-owner and interior designer, Kit Kemp. Click the links here to explore the whirl of colors and collage of art that define the Crosby Street (Soho) and the Whitby Hotel (Midtown). Also read: Every Three Key Hotel in Paris

Jewels on the Coast: Up and Down California

Its sheer breadth of size and variety means it’s no surprise to announce California as the state with the most Key hotels in America. Here, we’ll point you towards coastal gems like the sublime architectural achievements in Big Sur ( Post Ranch Inn and Ventana ), beachside luxuries in Santa Monica (in particular: the newly opened Georgian ), and wine country favorites like SingleThread and the Madrona . What we love: how each one of these hotels opens the door to the very best of their locations — and gives us a look at each setting through fresh eyes.

Across America: The Golden Age of Celebrity

Our French Keys bask in the tradition of ancient vineyards, stone chateaus, and historic palaces. In the United States, we see a different tradition. In Los Angeles, places like Chateau Marmont , the Paramour Estate , Sunset Tower , and the Charlie date back to guests and residents as illustrious as Clark Gable and Marilyn Monroe. These are spaces that play ingeniously with their history, even as they forge ahead with cutting-edge amenities and experiences. But it’s not just California. New York’s historic artist hotspot, the Hotel Chelsea , once hosted Bob Dylan and Andy Warhol. Today, it decorates every space with art donated by former residents. Look too to the Chicago Athletic Association , a former member’s club for 20th century business magnates and athletes — now among the city’s most impressive and vibrant hotels.
