Northern Turkey: This overlooked region won’t be quiet for long

Most Aussies bypass this part of the world but this off-the-beaten-path region is emerging as a rising star destination. It won’t be quiet for long.

Mateship and tragedy: I visited the battlegrounds of Flanders Fields

For many Australians, a trip to Turkey tends to follow a well-worn route: Istanbul, Gallipoli and maybe Aegean Islands. But what about the northern regions of the country? What’s there? And is it worth incorporating into your Turkey trip?

Although off the beaten track, you should absolutely visit this region while it’s still under the radar. Bordering Armenia and Georgia, the northeast Anatolia region is visually breathtaking and culturally and historically significant. As part of the old Silk Road trading route, it’s also sparking interest following the success of Joanna Lumley’s TV travel series exploring the area. It won’t be quiet for long.

It helps to have a guide to this traditional region, where English isn’t widely spoken and the most significant attractions are off the beaten track. Peregrine has recently added a northern Turkey tour to its offering. This is a tour that rewards an intrepid traveller – just like those that crossed the region’s Silk Road, thousands of years before.

Our tour of eight people plus an excellent local guide and driver, starts in the Turkish capital of Istanbul before heading north (by plane) to Kars, near the Armenian border to explore the ruins of Ani. We then spend a day in Erzurum, then travel back along the Black Sea through the historic towns of Amasya and Safranbolu. Along the way, expect excellent food, dramatic scenery and some great moments connecting with local communities.

Breathtaking scenery is everywhere. Picture: Ryan Bolton/Peregrine

Istanbul needs little introduction and in our three days in the Turkish capital we explored some of the major attractions such as Hagia Sophia and Grand Bazaar. But Kars, our next stop (a short flight from Istanbul), was more of a mystery.

A provincial city in northeastern Turkey, near the Armenian border, Kars is the gateway to Ani – a hauntingly lovely 11th-century ruined city comprising churches, mosques and palaces.

But first impressions of Kars itself are not favourable. It’s November and freezing when we arrive and there are just a few people on the streets and stray but friendly dogs. We start our tour at the government buildings, which are closed, then walk down a hill into an increasingly desolate scene – abandoned cars, buildings and crumbling walls tagged with graffiti.

One of our group says it reminds him of Ukraine. It’s bitterly cold, but the sky’s bright blue, the air bracing.

What a surprise then to discover later that night, as we re-enter town from another direction, that Kars looks like a completely different place: a snug, friendly city at the base of a beautiful mountain range, with people filling the streets and restaurants on this Friday night.

Extraordinary architecture. Picture: Ryan Bolton/Peregrine Adventures

The main reason to be in Kars is to explore the spectacular Ani ruins, a 45km drive away. The city of Ani was once an important trading post along the Silk Road, ruled by kingdoms and empires over the centuries, from the Byzantines to the Ottomans.

At the height of its powers, Ani was home to more than 100,000 people.

Now it is deserted. The fields around Ani are empty, and in the distance are beautiful snow-covered peaks. From the window of an old church you can see straight across the river into Armenia. Most of the buildings need substantial restoration work – for example the dome in the Cathedral of Ani (built in 1001) collapsed in 1319 and is yet to be restored to its former glory.

We are at the Ani ruins for almost three hours but could have easily spent longer. There is an amazing feeling of connection to the past there. Looking at the frescoes on the walls of the old churches, it’s easy to imagine the place packed with families, animals, artisans and traders. But the thing we couldn’t get over was the silence and peace of Ani. This is a World Heritage site but with no crowds, ropes, touts or tourist tat. This allows us to contemplate the majesty and the mystery of this very special place without being jostled or harried.

At the time of our visit, there are only one or two other small groups. But there is construction work happening nearby for a visitors centre and toilet block. It won’t be quiet for much longer.

Historical wonders abound. Picture: Ryan Bolton/Peregrine

CHEESE MUSEUM

The following day we travel just out of Kars to the tiny village of Bogatepe to visit a cheese museum. It looks like a modest stop on the itinerary (cheese museum … hmmm) but turns out to be one of the most memorable days of the tour.

The landscape around Bogatepe is mountainous and snow covered, and when we pull into the village, the drifts are piled thigh-deep and small stone cottages almost disappear into a haze of white. Village boys on horses raced ahead of our bus.

The village pride is the cheese museum, the country’s first. The region’s history of cheese making is told in plaques on the walls, and with an English speaking guide. But the real fascination lies in the pungent drying-out room, where the cheese is left to mature in animal skins. It’s a fairly grotesque sight but it doesn’t stop us from tasting mountains of the stuff (cheese, not the animal skins), including a very pungent but delicious gruyere.

We probably should have left room for more food because what happened next is a delightful surprise. A family in the village offers to host our group for a home-cooked breakfast, and I’ve never had a breakfast like it.

Once we remove our shoes and sit in the cosy kitchen, we are served steaming hot, baked potatoes with lashings of the region’s butter, rosehip jam with freshly baked doughnuts and clotted cream, flatbread and sesame pastries. But maybe there is an ulterior motive – our hosts are trying to marry off a bachelor son and ask if any of we ladies are single.

After breakfast we waddle out into the snow, struggling to pull on our jackets over our expanded waistlines. It’s time to drive to lunch! We all groan but it’s a seafood restaurant overlooking the stunning Cildir Lake – a large, freshwater lake situated at a height of 1900m. The fish caught and cooked are fresh and tasty.

FOOD AND DRINK

No visitor will ever starve in this part of Turkey. The food is plentiful and delicious. But booze here, depending on your hotel, is another matter.

Kars is a predominantly Muslim city and we struggle to find any pubs or bars. Alcohol is sold in some restaurants and at the supermarket but it’s fairly dry. No mind – the food is the main attraction.

A must visit is Kars Kaz Evi for goose. Described as “the place to eat in Kars”, the restaurant specialises in locally farmed organic goose, which is carved at your table and served with pilaf rice. The owner, a gregarious woman who has been awarded many honours for her community service, circulates between tables, welcoming diners and telling her story.

It’s significant since in patriarchal Turkey, particularly in the more conservative northern regions, you don’t see many women entrepreneurs striking out on their own.

Goose is a delicacy but more common, and more affordable is the kebab. In Erzurum we tried the famous cag kebabi, a horizontally stacked kebab made from lamb meat which is marinated for 24 hours in salt, black pepper and onion before it is cooked, skewered on a spit.

It’s served with flatbread and grilled green pepper. Vegetarians are also well catered for on this trip, with good vegetable options at each restaurant that Peregrine chose.

Dogu Express Train. Picture: Ryan Bolton/Peregrine

Quite a lot of ground is covered on the tour but the travel is made easy with a comfortable coach, and flights from Istanbul and Ankara, which are arranged by Peregrine.

But the highlight is the train. After two nights in Kars, we catch the Dogu Ekspresi (Eastern Express) south. This train connects the northeast of Turkey with Ankara, the capital, but we only travelled as far as Erzurum – a four-hour journey through spectacular scenery.

This train trip deserves a place on the list of world’s best rail journeys. We sit in the dining car and snack on cups of chai, chocolate with pistachios and hefty pastrami sandwiches, as the spectacular mountain scenery – including streams, small villages and snow covered mountains – flash past.

On the ground, transport is a comfortable coach, with a local driver who speaks English. Bus time is used wisely, being when our Peregrine guide fully briefed us on what we had seen and what was coming next.

PLACES TO STAY

Peregrine had us staying at a variety of four-star hotels around northern Turkey – and, of course, one of the great things about going on the tour is not having to book your own accommodation.

In all the hotels, the rooms are warm, clean, comfortable and large.

The Northern Turkey Explorer tour runs for nine days and is priced from $1919.

Best time to visit iran.

The climate of Iran is mostly arid or semi-arid, with a subtropical climate along the Caspian Coast. Generally, the hottest month is July, the coldest months are December and January, and the wettest month is January. Tourists visit Iran during the summer months (June - September) for the sunshine and regional festivals, and during the winter months (November - March) for skiing.

Culture and customs

Being one of the oldest continuously inhabited civilizations in the world, modern-day Iranian culture is enriched by centuries of tradition. Years of trade, conquest, and invasion have created a distinct culture with myriad influences from far and wide, resulting in an overriding national identity and culture rich in symbolism. Religion plays an important part in many aspects of Iranian society - the legal and educational systems, dress, marriage, architecture, the arts, and the media are all affected. As Iran is an Islamic nation, visitors can expect to see the hallmarks of Islam throughout Iran; mosques, the call to prayer, strict dress codes, and the observance of Ramadan are the most easily noticed, although there is a complex network of rules, customs, and traditions at play every day.

Although Iran's population is largely youthful and urban-centric, rich Persian artistic traditions are alive in contemporary Iran, with much of the elaborate architecture, cuisine, handicrafts, and popular poetry of Iran having their origins in ancient Persia. Iranian hospitality is world-famous; guests are often touched by the sincerity, politeness, and generosity of spirit of their Iranian hosts. Accepting tea and food is considered polite if offered, as is acting graciously and modestly while visiting someone's home.

Eating and drinking

Intrepid believes that one of the best ways of experiencing a country is by eating! Whether you're sampling street food, savoring a cheap eat or indulging in a banquet, there are endless options to choose from wherever you are in the world.

With access to some of the world's best produce, prepared following age-old ancient culinary traditions, foodies will love traveling through Iran.

Things to try in Iran

1. Dried Fruit & Nuts

Dried apricots, prunes, dates, raisins, and figs can be bought from shops, street stalls, and bazaars and make wonderful, healthy snacks. Also, you'll be able to find a wide variety of nuts sold by the bag - pistachios, almonds, and walnuts are usually the best picks.

2. Persian Ice Cream

Flavored with orange blossom, rose water, honey, nuts, or saffron, Persian ice cream is different from Western-style desserts. Often made with chunks of cream and wedged between two waffles, don’t miss the chance to try this type of sweet treat.

3. Khoresht

This hearty Persian stew can be found everywhere in Iran and has many variations. Meat eaters will love the split-pea and lamb combination while the eggplant, mushroom, and spinach options will delight vegetarians.

Geography and environment

Sharing borders with Afghanistan,   Armenia ,   Azerbaijan , Iraq, Pakistan,   Turkey   , and   Turkmenistan , Iran is located in the southwest corner of Asia. The Caspian Sea, Persian Gulf, and Gulf of Oman provide shorelines in the north and south, and while Iran lacks a major river system, there are several small rivers and streams throughout the country. Much of Iran’s terrain is mountainous, with most of the population living in the basins, plateaus, and plains. The deserts of Iran are mainly uninhabited, with the exception of a few oases, while the major cities are quite modern, with well-developed infrastructure and housing.

History and government

Early history.

The country now known as Iran was known as Persia for hundreds of years and has been occupied by people for many centuries. Archaeological evidence suggests that people populated the land here as long as 7,000 years ago, with civilizations and societies developing as the surrounding nations and areas evolved. Persia's fate was very much tied up with the destinies of neighboring countries, so as empires rose and fell (and leaders came and went), Persia was affected by invasions and confrontations with the Greeks, Mongols, Romans, Arabs, Turks, and others.

Under the reign of Darius the Great and Cyrus the Great (during the Achaemenid Empire), the Persian Empire expanded to be the largest empire of the time. During this period, coins were first introduced as a form of currency, building works on Persepolis began and a system of far-reaching highways and canals were built. Islam was brought to Persia around 637 AD; the population slowly adopted the religion and by the 11th century, the majority of the population was practicing Islam. Despite adopting the religion of the conquerors, Persian culture, style, and art was largely preserved, which led to the 'Islamic Golden Age' - a time when Persian literature, philosophy, science, and art blossomed (750-1258).

This time of creativity and prosperity was brought to an end by the Mongols, who invaded in 1219. This invasion proved devastating, with a monumental loss of culture occurring due to the widespread demolition of infrastructure, libraries, and mosques. Famine and violence accounted for a steep decline in population, which was worsened by the arrival of the Plague during the 14th century. Persia was in better shape by the 16th century, with the Safavid Dynasty (1502-1736) establishing the modern nation-state of Iran.

Recent history

The Great Persian Famine of 1870 and 1871 accounted for up to 2 million deaths in the region, but Iran's fortunes changed with the discovery of oil in 1908. This discovery also increased interest from other nations wishing to capitalize on this precious commodity. Iran endured many changes in leadership due to invasions and coups during the 1940s, 50s, and 60s, leading to the Iranian Revolution. The Iranian Revolution (also known as the Islamic Revolution) took place between 1978 and 1979 and resulted in the birth of the Islamic Republic. Ayatollah Khomeini served as leader until his death in 1989, after enduring the Iran-Iraq war, which was waged between 1980 and 1988. The Iraqi use of chemical warfare during this time caused international fury and led to the deaths of many of Iran's people.

Top 10 beautiful buildings of Iran

1. qavam house.

This elegant, traditional house located in Shiraz was built by the Qavam family in the mid-19th century but is now open to the public as a museum. The fine paintings and mirrored porch are the highlights, but the peaceful gardens, pools, and courtyards are also worthy of attention.

2. Abbasian House

This large historic house located in Kashan was built in the late 18th century. Featuring several serene courtyards, highly detailed wall carvings, peaceful pools, and arched doorways, this fine example of Kashani residential architecture is now preserved as a museum.

3. Tomb of Hafez

While not the largest or most elaborate of places, Shiraz’s Tomb of Hafez possesses a simple, organic beauty. The pavilion, memorial hall, and surrounding gardens are well-preserved examples of Iranian architecture - a fitting memorial to one of Persia’s most loved mystical poets.

4. Jameh Mosque of Yazd

This exceptional example of Azari-style Persian architecture has stood in Yazd for centuries. People come to admire the blue-green tiles, deep-blue interior, and grand arches, but it's mainly known for its grand minarets, which are among the tallest in Iran.

5. Golestan Palace

Visiting this divine palace complex is a must-do for visitors to Tehran. Colorful mosaics, decorated doors, dazzling mirrors, intricate marble carvings, lattice windows, elaborate chandeliers, bespoke furniture, and grand paintings combine in a sea of regal brilliance.

6. Khaneh Tabatabaei-ha

Also known as 'The Tabatabaeis’ House', this gorgeous building is another fine example of traditional Persian architecture. Detailed wall murals, ornate stained-glass windows, reflective pools, and well-manicured gardens create an atmosphere of opulence and grandeur.

7. The Zoroastrian Complex of Amir Chakmak

This unique three-tiered wonder of Yazd possesses beautiful order and symmetry. When lit up at night, its many arched alcoves provide a stunning spectacle to view and capture on camera.

8. Persepolis

This is the ancient crown jewel of Iran. The buildings of Persepolis may no longer be in as good a condition as they were thousands of years ago, but they are still full of beauty and mystery.

9. Imam Mosque

Previously known as the Shah Mosque, this UNESCO World Heritage site is considered a masterpiece. Featuring a glittering, tiled dome, walls of skillful calligraphy, stunning minarets, and spectacular mosaic work throughout, this is one of the world's most beautiful buildings.

10. Maqbaratoshoara

This stunning mausoleum is the final resting place of many of Iran's celebrated poets, scientists, and mystics. Built in the 1970s, it's a great example of contemporary architecture that manages to remain true to its cultural roots.

With ancient bazaars, handicraft centers and modern boutiques, there are a huge variety of ways to shop in Iran - from bargaining with a bazaar vendor to buying fixed-price items from a museum gift shop.

It's a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to bring certain items back into your home country. The United States and Canada generally have strict customs laws.

Festivals and Events in Iran

Also known as Persian New Year, this is one of the most important traditional holidays on the Iranian calendar. Heralding the advent of spring, this celebration with Zoroastrianism roots is a time of feasting with family, celebrating in nature, spring cleaning the home, and purchasing flowers and new clothes for the New Year. Many different types of rituals are performed during this time and can vary from family to family, area to area.

Ramadan and Eid

The ninth and holiest of months in the Islamic calendar, Ramadan is observed by most in Iran and is thought to be a time of spiritual rejuvenation. For this month, Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset, refraining from eating and drinking during daylight hours. Eid marks the end of fasting with three days of feasting and celebration.

Do I need a visa to travel to Iran?

Note: This information is under review due to the current situation in the country.

Most foreign visitors require a visa to enter Iran. Please be aware that this can be a frustrating and stressful process, and can take from 6-8 weeks. You will need to allow sufficient time for this and plan any other travel around your Iran trip accordingly. The cost of a visa also varies depending on your nationality and also changes regularly, making it hard for us to advise of the actual cost. But you should plan for it to cost somewhere around 100-180 EUR depending if you get a visa before departure or on arrival.

Iranian visas are issued in a two-step process and this will differ according to your nationality.

  • An authorization code for your visa must be issued by the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
  • A visa for your passport must then be obtained at an Iranian Embassy once the authorization code has been issued, or on arrival (depending on your nationality).

If you are traveling on a UK, USA, or CANADIAN passport, please be aware that your visa process can take longer due to government regulations. Please check that you will have sufficient time to obtain a visa before departure.

We are not currently operating in Iran and, therefore not facilitating/processing authorization code applications at this time.

However the tour itself is subcontracted to a local tour company called Dijon and I found their guide very disappointing. He had not read the Peregrine trip notes and did his own thing really. This meant having long lunches over 1 hour in duration at charmless roadside service stations followed by very rapid tours through world heritage sites such as Troy. He seemed disinterested in the places we visited and when i asked him if we could have more time at the actual sites he was extremely rude. He wasted a lot of time with opinionated monologues about his view of history (frequently wrong) instead of just pointing out the best things to see. After lunch each day on the bus he would harangue us with his political views which for me was most unwelcome.

The worst aspect was the time spent at shopping tourist traps, 4 in all: leather, carpets, jewellery and ceramics all with prices far exceeding local prices. So much for the Peregrine values of spending in the local community! There was no alternative offered to avoid these places.

I would not recommend this tour instead why not go to Turkey and get your tours there? It's much cheaper and the itineraries are better.

I hope this is of help.. Geopelia

Geopelia gave us a very balanced review of Peregrine tours. Basically it is a hit and miss with these tours. If the hotels are great and the guide is good, the tour becomes a success, but otherwise, like in this particular case, it becomes a serious disappointment.

' class=

Maybe a little late but would like to add our experience to Geopelia's. Our guide also our problem - hotels were fine - traditional which is what we like . Our bus ok but very slow making very long days and not improved by our guide's ideas of experiences we should not miss - mostly swims he enjoyed despite the majority of guests happy to continue with the itinerary. Admittedly we were mostly Ozzies who are spoilt with beautiful beaches but the crowded tourist places he took us not really representative of other beaches we saw driving past. He also felt the group should do everything together which can be very time consuming and defeats the purpose of 'free time'. He wasn't helpful when we decided to head off alone anyway.

When we sent our tour survey to Peregrine and asked if we were expecting too much (we don't do group tours much) and was this representative of their tours (so we can consider for future planning), we had no reply.

The Presidential Cycling Tour of Turkey returns to the calendar again keen to show off the natural wonders of the country to the world and to provide an excellent spectacle for bike racing fans.

This year, just four World Tour teams have turned up in the shape of BORA - hansgrohe, Team dsm-firmenich PostNL, Astana Qazaqstan Team and Alpecin - Deceuninck so this will open up opportunities for some of the smaller teams to score a big victory in this prestigious race.

With a host of sprint stages along the route it’s no surprise to see some of the world’s best sprinters present including Sam Welsford (BORA - hansgrohe), Fabio Jakobsen (Team dsm-firmenich PostNL) and back after illness the one and only Mark Cavendish (Astana Qazaqstan Team).

Travelling east to west the first seven stages hug the beautiful coast line hopping from town to town, resort to resort before a long transfer to stage eight in the magical city of Istanbul.

When you are hot you are hot and Tobias Lund Andresen (DSM-Firmenich PostNL) is on fire taking his third win of the race on stage seven. The plan it seemed was to lead out Fabio Jakobsen but he was just too strong and kept going all the way to the line.

Going into the final stage on the streets of Istanbul the over all lead is still in the hands of another DSM-Firmenich PostNL rider Frank van den Broke. four seconds ahead of Merhawi Kudus.

Presidential Cycling Tour of Turkey 2024 stages

The eight stage tour starts with a predominantly flat 135km around the city of Antalya to provide opportunity number one for the big sprinters before starting its journey westwards along the coast line.

Stage two from Kemer to Kas is a much longer 190km and with a couple of lumps near the start and a sizeable climb 60km from the finish it could see a much more attacking race.

Stage three from the popular resort of Fethiye to Marmaris is a very hilly affair but maybe not hilly enough to get rid of the sprinters who could have their day again at the finish.

There are two classified climbs on stage four including a second category ascent after 94km to shake things up so it is likely a much smaller group will make it into Bodrum to contest the finish.

Stage five between Bodrum and Kusadasi is lumpy again but the climbs are smaller so the pendulum again swings in favour of the fast men, although they will be made to work for it, especially over the final peak with 30km left to race.

Stage six is the queen stage with a mountain top finish at Manisa. This 20km climb takes the riders up above 1000m altitude and will be pivotal in deciding the outcome of the general classification.

Stage seven has just one minor lump just before half way before an absolutely pan flat run to the line and then the race ends with stage eight in and around the bustling city of Istanbul.

Tour of Turkey: Tobias Lund Andresen wins stage 4 sprint, moves into race lead

Dane claims first professional victory ahead of Van Poppel in second and Uhlig in third

Tobias Lund Andresen (DSM-Firmenich PostNL)

Tobias Lund Andresen ((Dsm-firmenich PostNL) emerged from a hectic finish to win stage 4 of the Tour of Turkey in Bodrum.

The Dane needed a late bike change but returned to the peloton and then timed his effort perfectly on the rising finish after Manuele Tarozzi (VF Group-Bardiani CSF-Faizanè) and the remains of the early break were caught in the final kilometre.

Danny Van Poppel (Bora-Hansgrohe) finished second and Henri Uhlig (Alpecin-Deceuninck) third as other riders slowed each other in the search for the best wheel to follow.

Thanks to his stage victory and the time bonuses, Lund Andresen also took the race leader’s blue jersey, which he will wear during the 177.9km fifth stage from Bodrum to Kuşadası.

Lund Andresen was overjoyed to win his first professional race.

“The plan was that if Fabio made it over the climb, we’d go with him but he didn’t have the leg, so we made a nice plan for me and the team did an amazing job and I was able to take the win,” he said.

“It was a hard stage, with a lot of climbing. The roads are not the best, so it’s almost like riding cobblestones the whole day. It was grippy but that was quite nice for me.”

A breakaway again tried to foil the sprinters’ teams and the peloton, with eight riders going away with 110 km to race of the 137.9 km stage.

They worked well together and extended their lead to close to 2:00 but then Polti-Kometa and Astana Qazaqstan drove the chase. The Italian team was keen to defend Giovanni Lonardi’s race lead, while Astana Qazaqstan rode for stage 2 winner Max Kanter.

The hilly profile of the stage again ruled out the pure sprinters, with Mark Cavendish (Astana Qazaqstan), Fabio Jakobsen (Dsm-firmenich PostNL) and others dropped from the peloton.

The break reduced to five riders over the final climb after 95 km but James Whelan (Q36.5), Calum Johnston (Caja Rural-Seguros RGA),  Tarozzi, Owen Geleijn (TDT - Unibet) and Gianni Marchand (Tarteletto-Isorex) pushed on and held a lead of 40 seconds on the fast ride to Bodrum.

Whelan split the attack on a late climb with 10km to go, with only Tarozzi, Johnston and Marchand able to go with him. They attacked each other and the pace eased so the peloton closed the gap on the run-in to the finish.

Tarozzi refused to give up hope and attacked alone inside the final kilometre. He got a gap but then faded on the rising finish as Lund Andresen timed his effort to perfection.
