The Inca Trail

The most famous hike in South America, the four-day Inca Trail is walked by thousands every year. Although the total distance is only about 24 miles (39km), the ancient trail laid by the Incas from the Sacred Valley to Machu Picchu winds its way up and down and around the mountains, snaking over three high Andean passes en route, which have collectively led to the route being dubbed ‘the Inca Trail.’ The views of snowy mountain peaks, distant rivers and ranges, and cloud forests flush with orchids are stupendous – and walking from one cliff-hugging pre-Columbian ruin to the next is a mystical and unforgettable experience.

Inca Trail Express

7 days | discover the ancient civilisations of peru on the inca trail.

peru inka travel

Travel to Peru to retrace the steps of the Incas – Peru's fascinating ancient civilisation. Travel from Cusco, through the fertile heartland of the Sacred Valley and to the magnificent Ollantaytambo ruins before the ultimate destination – Machu Picchu, one of the famed Seven Wonders of the World. This week-long trip is a choose-your-own-adventure type of deal – you can hike the Inca Trail, the Quarry Trail, or take it easy in Cusco and take the train to Machu Picchu. Allowing travellers of all abilities the opportunity to see this wonder first-hand, this trip is a perfect way to see Peru’s highlights when you don’t have more than a week.

Trip overview

  • This trip allows both trekkers and non-trekkers to visit Machu Picchu – one of the magnificent Seven Wonders of the World, perched high in the Andes mountains – with scenic hiking trails and train options.
  • Travel through the Sacred Valley of the Incas, known for the steep and soaring scenery, mystical significance and the Indigenous cultures that still reside here.
  • Visit a locally-run restaurant and café in Urubamba in the Sacred Valley that hires single mothers to support their children and the local community – and sit down to enjoy an organic, homemade beet cake and coffee.
  • Explore Cusco, South America's oldest continuously inhabited city. The city has ancient foundations, an interesting blend of Incan and colonial influences and seemingly endless things to do and see.
  • Whether you trek the Inca Trail, Inca Quarry Trail or take the scenic train route, you'll be travelling responsibly with a company that cares about balancing profit and purpose. Intrepid is the largest B Corp certified operator on the Inca Trail and we’re committed to operating our treks for the benefit of all.
  • By travelling on this trip, you’ll directly support our Intrepid Foundation partner, Awamaki. Donations help them empower indigenous women artisans in Peru with skills training and job opportunities that provide financial independence.
  • This trip visits places that are at high altitude, and as a result some people can suffer from altitude sickness, regardless of age or physical health. Please see the ‘Medical and Health Information’ section of the Essential Trip Information for more detail.
  • This trip involves a lot of walking to see the sites, and if you trek the Inca Trail* or Quarry Trail, there'll be strenuous hiking. The trip is recommended for those with a good level of fitness. Please bring comfortable footwear suitable for hiking. See the ‘Packing’ section of the Essential Trip Information for more detail.
  • For those who trek the Inca Trail or Quarry Trail, you'll be camping with basic facilities.
  • According to Machu Picchu visiting regulations, all visitors must follow a pre-determined route within the site. This route must be followed in one direction only, and once the guided visit commences exiting and re-entering the site is not permitted. Once the guided visit concludes, visitors must exit the site and personal exploration of Machu Picchu is not permitted. Please refer to the itinerary for details.
  • Travellers who choose different ways of reaching Machu Picchu (Inca Trail, Quarry Trail or Train), will not follow the same routes within Machu Picchu. This means that you may not be able to have photos together, overlooking Machu Picchu. This applies to travellers on the same booking or separate bookings.

Bienvenido! Welcome to Peru. If you arrive early, there is lots to see and do in this beautiful country! This trip forms part of a few longer combo trips. Some of your fellow travellers may have started earlier in Lima or elsewhere or be travelling further after Peru. Some will be doing different routes to Machu Picchu.

This morning, drive through the Sacred Valley. Known as Wilcamayo to the Incas, the valley has been a source of livelihood for the locals for hundreds of years. You’ll see maize crops covering the terraced walls and the sacred river beneath. Stop for lunch in a local community, where you'll also get the chance to learn about their traditional lifestyle and maybe wrap your tongue around a few words of the Quechua language. If it’s market day, you'll have time to browse the local handicrafts on offer, such as beads and ponchos. Then, visit the AMA Restaurant in Urubamba for afternoon tea – this café is dedicated to working with single mothers throughout the Sacred Valley, where there are few opportunities for childcare and employment. As all the ingredients used here are grown and purchased locally, the establishment also prides itself on its organic and locally focused practices. Enjoy a coffee, tea or juice with a slice of vegan beet cake or a homemade cookie and continue your journey to Ollantaytambo. Optional, Check out the town’s fascinating archaeological site – ancient remnants of an Inca city with soaring views over the present-day settlement.

  • Sacred Valley - Community visit & lunch
  • Sacred Valley - Coffee & cake
  • Ollantaytambo - Archaeological site - PEN70

Your travel time today will be approximately 4 hours.

Depending on the travel arrangements you made before the trip, during the next four days you’ll be either hiking the Inca Trail (Route 1), hiking the Quarry Trail (Route 2) or staying in Cusco for two days before taking the train to Aguas Calientes (Route 3). All routes visit Machu Picchu.

While away from Cusco, the bulk of your luggage will be stored at your hotel. If you’re hiking the Inca Trail or the Quarry Trail, the evening before you leave you'll receive a small duffle bag to carry your clothes in for the next four days (5 kg maximum). Your team of porters will carry these bags for you, together with the food and equipment for the trail. You won't have access to these items until the end of each day, as the porters will always be ahead of the group. If you’re travelling to Aguas Calientes by train, you'll be able to leave most of your luggage at the hotel in Cusco and travel with only a small bag for the overnight stay in Aguas Calientes.

Route 1 Inca Trail

Today, travel by minivan to the 82 km marker and meet your crew of local porters, your cook and your guide. Your first day will include uphill trekking to the campsite, which sits at 3100 m above sea level. On the way, you’ll see the Inca sites of Ollantaytambo, Huillca Raccay and Llactapata, as well as incredible views of snow-capped Veronica Peak. In the evening, unwind at the campsite with a nourishing meal prepared by your cook.

Route 2 Quarry Trail

Make an early start today and drive to Choquequilla, a small ceremonial place where Incas worshipped the moon. From here, you’ll head to the small community near Qory Song’o (Golden Heart) hill, where you’ll climb to the top for the incredible views of the Soqma Perolniyoc, Pachar and Huarocondo valleys. There are also several sacred tombs in the area, protected by the locals, which you can explore with your leader and even see some of the original structures crafted from wood and leather. These remains have never been seen by travellers before, so you can be a part of this exclusive experience. Carry on to the Perolniyoc Cascade lookout, where you can stop for some snacks and photos. Arrive at the campsite, 3700 m above sea level, around lunchtime. After, set off to explore the Q'orimarca archaeological site, which once served as a checkpoint to the Incas.

Route 3 Cusco:

After spending the night in Ollantaytambo, take a short drive to the town of Pisac. Pisac is well known for its market. Here you’ll have the opportunity to shop for souvenirs and perhaps try some local empanadas. Arrive back at Cusco in the afternoon, where your leader will take you to San Pedro Market, where you have the option to buy some local favourites for a picnic tomorrow.

  • 3 Night/4 Day Inca Trail (or 2 Night/3 Day Inca Quarry Trail) guided hike(s) with porters' support. Or guided Cusco stay (Machu Picchu by train)

Included lunch and dinner today are for travellers on the trekking options only.

The Inca Trail is within the ability of anyone with a moderate level of fitness. The trail is 45 km long and often steep. Each day's journey generally consists of seven hours of walking (uphill and downhill), with stops for snacks and lunch. Trekking usually begins at 7 am (except on the fourth morning) and you reach the campsite around 5 pm. Accommodation on the trek is camping (three nights). Double tents (twin-share) and self-inflating camping mats will be provided. The porters will set up the tents while the cook prepares meals.

The Quarry Trail is within the ability of anyone with a moderate level of fitness. The hike is 26 km long and its highest pass is at 4450 m above sea level. Horses will carry your gear and camping equipment. The first two nights are spent camping, and the third night you’ll stay at a simple hotel. Double tents (twin-share) and self-inflating camping mats will be provided. The porters will set up the tents while the cook prepares meals.

This is the most challenging day of the trek, as you ascend a 5-hour long steep path to reach the highest point of the trail. Colloquially known as 'Dead Woman's Pass', Warmiwanusca sits at a height of 4200 m above sea level, providing amazing views of the valley below. The group will then descend to the campsite in the Pacaymayo Valley at 3650 m.

This is the most challenging and rewarding day of the hike. A 3-hour walk takes you to the top of the first pass of Puccaqasa, about 4370 m high. After enjoying the picturesque views of the valley, it’s a short walk before stopping for lunch. After, make the 2-hour hike to Kuychicassa, the highest pass of the trek at 4450 m. From here, descend to the sacred site that the Incas called Intipunku. This is a sun gate, where the sun will stream through at particular times of the year and there are views of the Nevado Veronica mountain year-round. The Incas built several sun gates, the most notable overlooking Machu Picchu. Head to the campsite, only a stone’s throw away and at 3600 m.

Route 3 Cusco

Today, take a taxi to Tambomachay, an archaeological site just outside of Cusco. From here you’ll take a 2 to 3 hours walk back to Cusco. On the way, stop to admire some of the archaeological sites, including Puka Pukara, Quenqo and Saksaywaman. Arrive back in Cusco in the early afternoon and enjoy some free time. Maybe visit the Merida, Mendivil and Olave art galleries and workshops before finding a great spot to sit down and enjoy some dinner.

Route 1 Inca Trail Start the day with a climb through the Pacaymayo Valley to Runkuracay Pass at 3980 m. Enjoy views of the snow-capped mountain of Cordillera Vilcabamba before descending for around 2 to 3 hours to the ruins of Sayacmarca. Continue over the trail’s third pass to the ruins of Phuyupatamarca at 3850 m, also known as the 'Town Above the Clouds'. Start the 2-hour descent down the Inca steps to the final night's campsite by the Winay Wayna archaeological site.

Route 2 Quarry Trail Today’s hike will all be downhill. The first stop is the incomplete Kachiqata quarry, where the Incas were intercepted by the Spanish. Explore the cobbled streets of Ollantaytambo when you finish your trek. This is where you’ll meet with the travellers in your group who didn't hike, before taking the short train journey to Aguas Calientes.Spend the night in a hotel before tomorrow’s visit to Machu Picchu.

Route 3 Train to Aguas Calientes After a 1.5-hour drive to Ollantaytambo. This is where you’ll meet up with the travellers in your group who hiked the Quarry Trail. You’ll catch a 1.5-hour train through the winding Urubamba Valley to Aguas Calientes. The city is nestled in the cloud forest at the foot of Machu Picchu. Spend the night in a hotel before tomorrow’s visit to Machu Picchu.

Included lunch and dinner today are for travellers on the Inca Trail trekking option only. There is an included lunch for travellers on the Quarry Trail trekking option.

This is the final and most spectacular leg of the trek to Machu Picchu – one of the famed Wonders of the World. The day starts before dawn, with breakfast at 4 am. Say farewell to the porters as they descend to the train station and begin hiking. Once the final checkpoint opens at 5 am, you’ll begin the final 2.5 hour trek to Intipunku (the Sun Gate). Weather permitting, you’ll enjoy unforgettable views over the ‘Lost City of the Incas’ as you enter Machu Picchu through the Sun Gate.

Route 2 and 3 Machu Picchu to Cusco

Take an early bus up to Machu Picchu at 6.00 am. The city was built around 1440 AD as a country retreat for the Incan nobility, but there’s evidence that the land had been a sacred Incan site for much longer. Take a guided tour around the ruins of temples, palaces and living quarters. This is a day to remember! For all travellers, after taking advantage of the seemingly endless photo opportunities, it's time to catch the bus to Aguas Calientes, where you’ll stop for lunch together. From here, take a scenic train ride to Ollantaytambo, then drive back to Cusco, arriving in the evening.

  • Machu Picchu - Guided tour

Due to safety reasons the final checkpoint for all trekkers opens at 5 am. The estimated arrival time at Machu Picchu's Sun Gate for Inca Trail trekkers is approximately 7.30 am. For Quarry Trail trekkers and train travellers, the bus from Aguas Calientes to Machu Picchu departs at 6.00 am. The estimated arrival time is between 6.30 to 7.00 am. The sun rises at Machu Picchu at approximately 5.30 am, so it's not possible to be there in time for sunrise.

Due to Intrepid's internal safety policy, our leaders are specifically prohibited from recommending or assisting with booking trips to the mountaintop ruins of Wayna Picchu.

Your trip comes to an end today, and there are no activities planned. If you’d like to stay longer, just speak to your booking agent. You may want to consider purchasing a Boleto Turistico (tourism ticket) It gains access to the many fascinating museums here, such as the Contemporary Art Museum, Regional History Museum and Qosqo Native Art Museum. Please speak with your tour leader about this for more details.

What to know when planning an awe-inspiring hike on the Inca Trail

Peru's most famous trail leads to Machu Picchu

Machu Picchu in Peru on a beautiful sunny day

While on the Inca Trail, every step — past ancient ruins, up stone staircases and over Dead Woman's Pass — brings hikers closer to their final goal: reaching Machu Picchu. Trains and buses drop thousands of visitors off here every day, but hiking in offers an unmatched experience. Hikers get to sit in sacred spaces, sleep under the stars and bond with their fellow adventurers. The promise of being able to reach the Sun Gate and take in that first view of Machu Picchu keeps them motivated.

Planning a hike on the Inca Trail takes time. There are also important factors to keep in mind, like when the dry season is and what time of year the trail is closed for maintenance. Here are some tips to ensure an epic experience.

What is the Inca Trail?

A hiker on the Inca Trail in Peru

Hikers get to see stunning views from the Inca Trail

The Classic Inca Trail is a 25-mile-long hiking trail in the Andes Mountains that takes four days to complete and ends at Machu Picchu. After starting at KM 82 in the Sacred Valley, hikers will follow the stone paths that wind by sites like the Valley of Llulluchapampa, Sayacmarca ruins and Wiñay Wayna complex. On the final day of the trek, you most likely will rise well before dawn in order to arrive at the Sun Gate and Machu Picchu around sunrise.

If possible, think about booking six to nine months in advance. The peak season to visit is June through August, and with the Inca Trail being a popular hike, permits are snapped up quickly.

Dry season is May through September, "where temperatures are milder and you can expect bright, sunny days, making for great visibility along the hike," Krissy Concannon, an independent affiliate of Travellustre in Boston, told The Week. The Inca Trail is one direction only, and when the adventure is over you will leave by train or bus.

Do I need to train for the Inca Trail?

Hikers walk by the Urubamba River in Peru's Sacred Valley

Preparation for the hike should start before you leave home

This is a strenuous hike at a high altitude, traversing different landscapes like cloud forests and grasslands. Travelers should expect to travel six to nine miles a day and can train ahead of time by hiking with a pack or getting regular exercise at home. Julie Sudderth of Vivid Getaways in Dallas told The Week she has seen "hikers from 7 to 70 years old command this trail with no problems." The Inca Trail reaches an elevation of 13,800 feet above sea level, making acclimation critical, especially for those who have experienced altitude sickness previously. Concannon recommends spending at least two or three days in Cusco prior to the hike to acclimate better to the altitude.

What kind of experiences can you have on the trail?

A man and a woman watch the sunrise at Machu Picchu

Sunrise on the trail is a beautiful experience

Every trip has one element in common: You must go with an operator and cannot hike on your own. "Normally, the best companies go with the best guides," Sudderth said. "This is invaluable." Good guides "will know when to slow down or quicken the pace as they are actively reading the client’s demeanor," she added, and also "weave the rich history, wildlife and flora and fauna into the hike" while keeping everyone "engaged and motivated. With children especially, this is priceless."

Those who want to go all out can book a private or small group hike, with an expert guide and porters, a well-stocked and clean bathroom tent, gourmet meals and high-quality camping gear, from the pillows to the tents. Midrange experiences are catered toward hikers who do not want a bare-bones trip but also aim to keep costs down, and include nice gear and good food with moderate accommodations.

Concannon warns that when opting for low-cost hiking tours, travelers "need to be cautious to ensure operators are not cutting corners that could negatively impact their experience. Hikers can expect minimal or lesser quality gear and food options to be more minimal. Campsite options could also be less than ideal, with locations lacking in view."

Passenger number, plan your perfect holiday to peru.

Peru has become one of the world’s favourite travel destinations, attracting visitors with its unique blend of Inca heritage, Andean culture, vibrant cities and its pristine areas of Amazon Rainforest. Beyond the world famous sights, there are a myriad of options to choose from when planning a holiday to Peru and so a two or three week journey can be highly tailored to your own interests.

The country is roughly separated into three areas. The most visited is the central high altitude Inca heartland, where we find Machu Picchu and the Sacred Valley and which is flanked on either side by the Amazon and the thin coastal strip in which the capital Lima is located, the natural starting point for most trips. Let’s take a look at each area in more detail to help you plan your perfect Peru itinerary.

Hiking Peru's Inca Trail to Machu Picchu

The Classic Inca Trail Peru is the path that connects Machu Picchu with the rest of the Inca Empire.

INCA TRAIL PERMITS SPECIAL NOTE

Such is the popularity of the classic Inca Trail the numbers of trekkers is controlled by the Peruvian government and permits are limited to 500 people per day. Of these 500 permits approximately 200 are allocated to tourists and 300 to porters, cooks and guides. Permits go on sale in January each year and are allocated on a first-come first-served basis. Each year we see the permits sell out more quickly than the year before with popular dates selling out immediately. For this reason we strongly recommend that you book one year in advance to be sure of a place.

Map of the route for Peru: Inca Trail & the Amazon

Places visited

Day 1 cusco: the land of the incas.

The air is a bit thinner when you step off of the plane and you can immediately sense the magic of Cusco as you make your way to the city centre along the cobblestone streets past grand buildings and ancient Inca stonework. We welcome you to Peru, a diverse land of natural beauty and traditional cultures and we invite you to open yourself to curiosity and wonder as you embark on this adventure up in the Andes.

Exclusive Inclusions:

Meals included:, day 2 the sacred valley: pisaq ruins and cultural traditions.

The Sacred Valley is aptly named for its importance to the people who have lived there and it is also stunningly beautiful with mountain scenery and colourful farmland along the Urubamba River. You'll see the massive ruins of Pisaq perched up above the town as you approach and you'll get to spend time with a local community on the way up to the site. Lunch is an experience unto itself at a community-run restaurant, using locally-grown ingredients for a delicious and traditional meal.

Your OMG Stay Casa Andina Premium Sacred Valley

Day 3 The Sacred Valley: Your OMG Day

Sitting at a slightly lower altitude than Cusco, spending time in the Sacred Valley helps to get you used the altitude in these parts. Choose from a scenic acclimatization hike to a waterfall or get the adrenaline flowing by scaling a via ferrata network of rungs and ladders for lunch with a view. Back at the hotel, feast on a traditional pachamanca meal consisting of various types of meat, potatoes and vegetables cooked for hours in the ground under hot stones.

Day 4 Inca Trail day 1: Setting Off

The Inca Trail has become one of the most well-known treks in the world and with good reason. Hiking past ancient ruins through incredible mountain scenery and to finally arrive to Machu Picchu through the Sun Gate is a once-in-a-lifetime experience and a very satisfying accomplishment. Start the first day of the trek at a gentle pace to warm your legs up for the days to come, allowing yourself to take in the views of the valley and river below.

Day 5 Inca Trail day 2: Ascent

Awake at the mountain campsite and enjoy a cup of tea and a warm shower without any need to rush up the mountain. The morning mist and the joviality amongst the porters make for a homely atmosphere as you get ready for the day and prepare your things to walk.

Day 6 Inca Trail day 3: Dead Woman's Pass

Open your tent to the cool air and see some warm washing water and a cup of tea waiting for you. You'll get wafts of something delicious being cooked and the increasing murmur of the cooks and porters going about their morning. Savour the moment and be present to your surroundings. Dead Woman's Pass is nothing you can't handle today.

Day 7 Inca Trail Day 4: The Sun Gate and Machu Picchu

Wake up next to beautiful Inca ruins known as the "town above the clouds" and take the time to enjoy them without many others in the morning hours. Pack away some of the extra layers as you prepare to descend into cloud forest and with the anticipation of finally reaching the ultimate goal, Machu Picchu.

Day 8 Cusco: Discover Machu Picchu

Exploring the mountaintop Inca citadel of Machu Picchu is a magical experience, no matter how many pictures you may have seen of it. The history of the ancient Inca that you've heard in the days leading up to this moment seem to all come together as you wander the site's temples and terraces. Relive the memories and take in the views as you return by train on the way back to Cusco.

Day 9 Cusco: Capital of the Incas

The day is yours to explore Cusco at your own pace and style, with plenty of options in and outside of the city for discovery. Feel the energy of the city as you wander the cobblestone streets past the mix of Spanish colonial-style architecture and Inca stonework.

Day 10 Cusco: Your OMG Day

The options of what to do in Cusco are seemingly endless, and today you'll get the choice to approach the day on your terms. Take to the trails on a hike outside of the city past ancient ruins with sweeping views of the city or stay local to dig deeper into the history and the delicious local cuisine as well as learn how to prepare some dishes at a cooking class.

Day 11 Amazon Jungle: Rainforest Wilderness

The Amazon has sparked the imagination for as long as curious travellers have known about it, conjuring up images of lush green vegetation and exotic wildlife. The biodiversity of plant and animal life is staggeringly varied, and the cultural traditions of those who live here have thrived along the rivers and from living off of the land.

Your OMG Stay Refugio Amazonas Lodge

Day 12 Amazon Jungle: In Search of Wildlife

Awake to the sounds of the forest, hearing tropical birds and animals moving through the canopy above you, and maybe the eerie call of a howler monkey in the distance. You never know what you might see on any given occasion which is part of the adventure, and the anticipation adds to the excitement as new and incredible animals, birds and plants could be spotted around every corner or bend in the river.

Day 13 Lima: Back to the coast

By now you willl have realized just how incredibly diverse Peru is, both culturally and geographically, from the mountains to the jungle and to the desert coastline. Equally as diverse and delicious is the regional food, highlighted and concentrated in Peru's capital city of Lima, which has become a hotspot on the global food map and with good reason. Celebrate the old and new over a final dinner with your travel companions next to an ancient adobe pyramid in the heart of the city.

Day 14 Lima

Today your adventure comes to an end, but the memories made during your time in Peru will live on.

Grecia Fuentes

I was born in Lima and I currently live in La Paz. I studied Public Relations, but my life has always been linked to tourism where I have been working for more than 10 years. I am passionate about my country, and I believe that everyone should someday discover Peru for its great cultural, gastronomic and natural wealth. I have been lucky enough to visit most of Peru, including the Coast, Andes and Jungle! In my spare time, I love to cook and eat, but above all, I like to spend as much time as possible with my baby boy.

peru inka travel

Silvia Rincon

Maracaibo, Venezuela

I am extremely passionate about traveling. I love Latin American landscapes, from the Caribbean beaches, to highlands of the Andes, to the magical Patagonia lands. I truly believe sustainable tourism is essential for traveling, to ensure that future generations enjoy the same landscapes we see today. I have worked in the tourism industry for over ten years. I value friendship and happiness, so you will find a friend in me. In my spare time, I love to travel, go to the beach, get some wine, meditate and read a good book.

peru inka travel

Debbie Sutcliffe

I was born and raised in Peru and have 21 years of experience in the tourism industry. I'm passionate about traveling and being able to create memories by showcasing my country. I consider myself lucky to have traveled the world on a cruise ship for over 10 years, giving me the opportunity to explore different destinations and learn about countries' customs, food and cultures. I love to bake, barbecue, visit the beach and, of course, travel and explore new destinations. I am also a big believer that every country has its own charm, but Peru will always have a special place in my heart.

peru inka travel

Leila Dancuart

I was born in Lima, Peru, but my mom is from Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) and my dad is from Lima. I can speak fluent English, Spanish, and Portuguese! Travelling has always been my passion, and learning about different cultures and trying new experiences is my favorite thing to do. Because of this, I studied Hotel & Restaurant Management at the University of Houston. After graduating, I found an opportunity to learn more about the tourism industry while customizing & crafting trips to South America! When I'm not working, I love to visit new restaurants, coffee shops, nearby bars, spend time with family and friends, take dance lessons, and discover new music and movies. My favorite food is Nikkei, which is a fusion between Peruvian and Japanese or Peruvian-Italian cuisine. One of my favorite drinks is coffee & Pisco Sour too!

Melissa Schenk

Stuttgart, Germany

I was born and raised in Germany . I received a bachelor’s degree in Health and Tourism Management from the University of Economics and Environment Nürtingen-Geislingen in Germany. During a semester abroad in Peru I got to know various places in the country and fell in love, so I decided to move back to Lima after the pandemic.

Noelia Castro

Noelia was born in Lima, she got her bachelor’s degree in Hotel and Restaurant Management from the University of Houston. Always eager to travel the world, she consistently explored Peru including: Cusco, Ica, Piura, Pasco, Junín, La Libertad, Cajamarca, Huánuco and San Martin.

Mikey Blount

Prague, Czech Republic

I was born in Prague to a Czech mother and an American father, growing up I often moved between the two countries, which fueled my passion for travel from a young age. While studying for a psychology degree in the UK, I used part-time work to finance my travels in Europe and Asia. However, after a two-week field trip working on housing issues in Salvador, Brazil, I became hooked on Latin American culture, food, and lifestyle.

Empowering peru women and opening the door to women in tourism.

We understand the importance of extra safety measures to make sure our Peru Women Guides and Porters are comfortable at all times. Sexual harassment is real in all industries, but with women and men sleeping so close together, we needed to be clear on proper behavior. We decided to hire an outside coach to review with everyone on our team the Do’s and Don’ts. He helped to reinforce the rules we have at Alpaca Expeditions, like no drinking on the job (this leads to poor choices), no touching, careful language, be respectful to everyone. And a reminder that we are a team and we need to stick up for each other and ourselves.

hotel to hotel service

Our drivers are not only trained in customer service but also come properly uniformed, and many are fluent in English.

Typically, all transportation types are included in each of our services. For instance, if you have booked a trekking tour, we will pick you up early, typically between 4 AM and 5 AM. When visiting Cusco, it's important to note that traffic here is generally moderate. However, there are peak traffic times, such as between 7 AM and 8 AM, which coincide with school hours, and in the evening between 6:00 PM and 8:00 PM. Therefore, if you have a flight during these times, it's crucial to be at the airport at least 2 hours in advance. The drivers of Alpaca Expeditions ensure their vehicles are prepared with all necessities before each service. They are acutely aware that delays can lead to missed trains, flights, or other connections. Consequently, they are always more than punctual, arriving at least 10 minutes before the scheduled time for any service, understanding the responsibility they carry in executing these tasks.

Remember that Alpaca Expeditions offers an extra 7 kg allowance for your personal belongings on any of our tours. We include a personal porter who is responsible for carrying your duffel bag without any additional fee. You will not have access to your duffel bag until you reach your evening campsite. The bag should not exceed 7 kg, which includes 4 kg for clothes and 3 kg for your sleeping bag and sleeping mat.

personal porter

Each Alpaca Expeditions porter is paid directly after each trek, allowing them to return home more quickly. They receive better wages than our competitors, health insurance, and all their equipment free of charge, including hiking boots, pants, jerseys, fleeces, jackets, hats, flashlights, sleeping bags, and high-quality food. We ensure each of our porters has a comfortable bed in a pleasant room to sleep in before and after each trek. We also visit the communities they live in, providing toothpaste, toothbrushes, soap, and other necessary supplies to their families, along with books for their children.

This is just the beginning for us, and we are always looking for ways to do more. While the government allows each porter to carry up to 25 kg, we limit this to 20 kg to prioritize their health and safety. Each porter carries up to 15 kg of company equipment and 5 kg of personal items. This is why it is crucial to keep your personal duffel bag weight under our 7 kg limit. You might see other companies allowing their porters to carry more than the allotted weight, but at Alpaca Expeditions, we strictly adhere to these limits to ensure our porters' well-being.

Clases de Cocina

Alpaca Expeditions offers its passengers the chance to experience local cooking. We aim to immerse trekkers in Inca life by walking them through the original Inca paths and teaching them about Inca culture. Food is a significant part of Inca life, making it a special element in any tour or trek with Alpaca Expeditions.

cooking classes

In 2022, Alpaca Expeditions introduced a cooking class as part of each of our treks, conducted by our amazing trekking chefs and interpreted by our guides.

We will transform your dining tent into a makeshift kitchen, providing all the necessary supplies to prepare a Peruvian specialty. Your chef will guide you step by step through the process of making a traditional Peruvian meal, such as Lomo Saltado, and share some essential mountain cooking tips.

Peru is recognized as a top culinary destination, largely thanks to the popularity of our renowned beef dish, Lomo Saltado. This is most often the meal you will learn to cook, but there is also the opportunity to learn how to prepare other dishes like traditional Peruvian ceviche or even our signature drink, the pisco sour.

Cooking Class on the Inca Trail: These classes are voluntary and designed to be a fun, educational experience. Our clients consistently marvel at the amazing ability of our chefs to create culinary magic on a mountaintop. As you learn to prepare and cook Peruvian specialties, you will also see firsthand how such elaborate meals can be created on a small campsite stove.

Enjoy a cooking class in the mountains and be sure to take plenty of photos, just in case your friends won't believe your incredible experience.

Satellite Phones

The best way to hike in the mountains of Peru is to completely disconnect from technology, especially the internet and cell phones. The most impressive and exciting aspect is the opportunity to experience the true and wonderful nature that we often miss when we are at home, watching TV or absorbed in our cell phones during our leisure time. The feeling of being disconnected from work and the daily routine left at home is incredible.

satellite phones

However, this remoteness means limited access to emergency resources. That's why Alpaca Expeditions has invested in satellite phones for every trek.

We are prepared to assist you in case of any emergency, particularly health-related issues. For this reason, Alpaca Expeditions has invested in satellite phones, as they are one of the most crucial tools for any operator trekking in remote areas where telephone or television signals are absent. This means that every guide on our treks will be equipped with a fully charged satellite phone as well as radios. While these are primarily for emergencies, we allow our clients to use them at any time.

We ask that you cover the cost, which is $2.50 per minute. This fee can be paid in cash at our office or via PayPal once you have completed the trek.

Being just a phone call away from any doctor, hospital, or friend helps everyone feel assured of their safety. Radios, which all our guides carry, have limited reach, so Alpaca Expeditions includes satellite phones to ensure that we can connect no matter where we are on the mountain.

Portable private toilet

We understand that our clients will need restroom facilities at various times and locations during their journey. Along the Inca Trail, there are restrooms available, particularly those belonging to the communities near the trail. Alpaca Expeditions provides portable toilets to enhance this service, which will be set up at each meal site or campsite.

toilet tent

As with any mountain trip where we are exposed to nature, it is possible to use natural areas as restrooms. However, it is crucial to be mindful of the waste we generate, such as toilet paper or wet wipes used for cleaning. These should be carried with us and not discarded on the ground or left along the trail. Remember, the Inca Trail is a protected area overseen by a government institution. In places where garbage bins are unavailable, particularly at our camps, we provide special plastic bags for waste. Our porter team will be responsible for carrying out our waste.

Please be aware that although there are designated bathrooms for men and women, in practice, both genders often use the same facilities. Functionally, there is no significant difference between men's and women's bathrooms. Therefore, it is common for people of all genders to use whichever bathroom is available.

Why the Daughter of an American Archaeologist Sent Her Father’s Collection to Peru

Unlike many of his peers, John Howland Rowe viewed the country as a source of partnership, not a laboratory to play in

Juan B. García

When archaeologist John Howland Rowe died in May 2004 at age 85, he didn’t leave behind instructions on what to do with his archives and other research materials. Rowe’s widow was similarly silent on the matter, so when she died last year, Ann P. Rowe , one of the archaeologist’s daughters from his first marriage, realized it was up to her to determine the fate of these items, which she wanted “to be curated and available to students and scholars for study.” Ultimately, Ann decided to send the materials to Peru, the country that had captivated Rowe throughout his six-decade career.

“The collections needed to have a final destination,” says John W. Rick , an emeritus anthropologist at Stanford University who helped Ann coordinate the transfer. “I was involved in contemplating what those destinations might be. A number of universities within the [United States] considered them. A number of museums considered them. But in the end, it made the best sense for them to return to Peru. In many senses, it was just like a traveler returning home.”

Rowe was an archaeologist and anthropologist known for his extensive research on Peru, specifically the Inca civilization. He earned a PhD from Harvard University in 1947; started teaching at the University of California, Berkeley, in 1948; and founded the Berkeley-based Institute of Andean Studies in 1960. He conducted excavations in Puno, Cuzco , Ayacucho and other parts of Peru and discovered a significant site linked to the pre-Inca Chanapata civilization.

One of the donated books from Rowe's collection

Peru has recognized this American scholar who made such valuable contributions to the study of its past: The government made Rowe an Officer of the Order of the Sun of Peru in 1957 and gave him the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit for Distinguished Services in 1981.

The materials transferred to Peru from Rowe’s collection include around 88 books and 4,556 archaeological specimens , among them pottery fragments, animal bones and a ceramic vessel that will be studied and exhibited to the public. As Ann explains, these artifacts were used by Rowe, his associates and his students to construct a chronology of the Peruvian highlands and coast.

“At a time when getting dates in years was virtually impossible, [Rowe’s] work specified time periods there as narrowly as 25 to 50 years, with a relative chronology that remains the most widely used in Andean studies,” noted the University of California, Berkeley, in a 2004 statement .

Christine Hastorf, an archaeologist at Berkeley whose research focuses primarily on the Andean region of South America, says she teaches Rowe’s chronology to her students, showing them the pottery that Rowe and his colleagues “created that sequence on.”

Archaeological specimens from Rowe's collection

Rowe “did a lot of really important, early work, especially his work with documents. He really opened that up and wrote out things that were just sitting there hiding, and he brought them out,” says Hastorf. “That allowed people around the globe, but especially in South America, to really get to know” the region’s history, from pre-Inca civilizations to the postcolonial period.

Rowe spent most of his summers in Cuzco, where he split his time between the field and the archives. As former student Richard L. Burger wrote in a 2007 journal article , Rowe “viewed Peruvian archaeology as a joint venture” between local and foreign scholars. He surrounded himself with Peruvian friends, students and colleagues, all of whom held him in high esteem.

Burger added, “His attitude toward Peru could not have been further from that of many archaeologists in the 1960s and 1970s who viewed Peru as their laboratory to study cultural processes.”

Rowe’s books traveled to the National Library of Peru in San Borja in two shipments. The first installment—a set of 28 books—arrived in late 2022. The materials ranged in date from 1607 to 1949, per a statement . Of particular interest were three books printed in Lima at the beginning of the 17th century, says Jorge Huamán Machaca , a member of the National Library’s collection protection team. The texts included Quechua grammar and vocabulary manuals by Jesuit priest Diego González Holguín , as well as a second edition of a chronicle of the Inca Empire by Inca Garcilaso de la Vega .

BNP recibe importante donación de libros pertenecientes al peruanista John Howland Rowe. To help sort through her father’s books and decide which volumes to donate, Ann turned to Charles Walker , a historian at the University of California, Davis, who is familiar with the National Library’s staff and holdings. He contacted the Consulate General of Peru in San Francisco, which arranged the initial shipment’s transfer to Peru in a diplomatic pouch , a sealed package intended for official use. The process took more than a year to complete.

“I started going through his books and found all of these lovely, lovely brochures, and very rare 19th-century dictionaries, and instruction manuals on how to learn Quechua,” Walker says. “Many of them [were] cheap paper editions, not collector’s items, but … books sold for $2 in the streets of Cuzco. I started separating books that were valuable: rare 17th-century books.”

In July 2023, Peru declared four of the books from this transfer cultural patrimony of the nation, meaning they are of vital importance to Peruvian identity and will be protected and preserved. All written by Rowe, the selected texts are Inca Culture at the Time of the Spanish Conquest (1946), Sound Patterns in Three Inca Dialects (1950), Inca National Movement of the 18th Century (1955) and The Incas Under Spanish Colonial Institutions (1957).

Four of Rowe's books

“These four books are investigations that focus on the history of the Inca,” says Huamán Machaca. “The books hold additional value, as they were dedicated to intellectuals of that time, such as Paul Rivet and Raúl Porras Barrenechea . They’re also valuable because they’re first-edition books … and the combination of all of these criteria, along with the significance the author … holds for Peru, is what elevated the books to the category of cultural patrimony.”

In September 2023, a second shipment of around 60 books from Rowe’s private collection arrived in Peru. This time, Walker—concerned about potential delays—personally transported the books to the country.

Walker met Rowe in Cuzco in the 1980s. He remembers the archaeologist’s generosity regarding his book collection. Rowe would always bring books to donate to a university in Cuzco when he visited the city every summer, Walker recalls.

“I felt a responsibility,” Walker says. “I thought, ‘These books have to go to Peru.’ I’m so glad it happened. This is what we need to be doing. I was happy to contribute.”

Dedication to Paul Rivet

When it came to repatriating the 4,556 archaeological materials collected by her father, Ann requested Rick’s assistance. Rick had previously contacted the San Francisco consulate “about his own affairs and knew the people there and how they worked,” Ann says. He also knows staff at the Lima-based National Museum of Archaeology, Anthropology and History of Peru .

With the assistance of four other individuals, Rick photographed all of the pottery sherds and artifacts over a two-week period. Then, he sent the materials to the consulate, which forwarded them on to the Ministry of Culture of Peru. As Ann points out, Rowe made sure to carefully record “the site provenance of the materials, which makes the collection valuable to preserve.”

Evelyn Centurión Cancino , director of the ministry’s Recovery Division, says, “The importance of these items lies in their role in establishing the chronology and stylistic developments of early cultures in Peru.” The repatriated collection arrived in Peru in March and will soon be transferred to the National Museum’s warehouse, where experts will conduct analyses of the artifacts. Some of the items will be exhibited in September at the ministry’s central headquarters in Lima.

Archaeological specimens from Rowe's collection

Ann, who followed in Rowe’s footsteps by studying Andean archaeological textiles, says her father’s approach to constructing a chronology of Peruvian history was a potent method for gaining a highly accurate understanding of events in the region. Rowe demonstrated that “ceramics could be used not only to describe the order in which things happened but also the influences of one style on another so that the relationship of one place to another at the same time could be characterized,” she adds.

In addition to preserving and studying Rowe’s collection of books and archaeological artifacts, the Peruvian government plans to look into the artifacts’ background. The government will try to find out how the objects initially left the country decades ago, determining whether they were moved out of Peru as a whole or in parts. Centurión says Peru was not aware of the existence of Rowe’s archaeological collection prior to the donation.

Ann’s donation arrives amid a global push to return cultural artifacts to their countries of origin. Since the 1990s, museums and governments have repatriated millions of objects, some of which were acquired under dubious circumstances prior to the late 20th century.

YouTube Logo

In a statement announcing Peru’s acquisition of Rowe’s collection, as well as dozens of artifacts repatriated from Europe and the United States, Peruvian Minister of Culture Leslie Urteaga Peña said that the country has recovered more than 7,014 cultural assets since 2019.

She added, “We will keep moving forward to make sure we protect our precious heritage, because Peru’s cultural legacy constitutes a fundamental pillar for the formation of our identity as Peruvians.”

That Rowe’s work and artifacts are now included in that patrimony is a testament to the collaborative approach that defined his career.
