Traveling is ubiquitous in our lives. From day to day work commutes to going on a trip or vacation with our family or friends, we are constantly traveling. And we thank God that traveling has also been made easy. We can turn to many modes of transportation to bring us to our desired destinations. However, traveling still remains a stressful activity. We worry about safety, the sudden change in weather, missed flights, or lost luggage. The list of what can go wrong while traveling is endless and daunting. How and what can we do to deal when such a situation arises? We can turn to our God and say a quick prayer for safe travel. 

Biblical characters like Noah ( Genesis 7:1-24 ), Abraham ( Genesis 12:1-20 , Genesis 13:1-18 ), and Moses ( Exodus 4:18-31 ) have also embarked on several epic journeys. They would have fervently prayed for a safe journey and blessings. Similarly, we should also pray each time we go on a trip. I personally believe that prayer for safe travel is a powerful thing to do before any trip. By praying, we are inviting God and trusting Him that He will get us to our destination, safe and sound. Here are some short prayers for travel that we can pray before traveling. 

1. A Short Prayer for Safe Travel

Here is a short prayer for safe travel that you can say right before your trip.

Lord, I know that You watch my coming and going. Today, I pray for You to watch over me as I travel. Keep me safe in Your loving arms. Let no harm come upon me during my trip and cover me under Your mighty wings. As I step out and start on my journey, I will choose to trust you and not give in to fear. Help me get to my destination and get home safely. Help me to experience Your greatness and love during this trip so that I may draw even closer to You. In Jesus’ name, I pray, Amen. 

Psalm 121:7-8 The Lord keeps you from all harm and watches over your life. The Lord keeps watch over you as you come and go, both now and forever.

2. Prayer for Travel Blessings to Have A Safe Flight

As we go on our trip, let us also ask the Lord for His blessing and favor so that our journey may be smooth and peaceful. Here is a short prayer we can lift to the Lord before a flight.

Lord, today I entrust You for your safety as we go on this road trip. I pray for an alert mind so that I may drive safely. Please sustain my strength during the long trip and bless me with steady hands. Grant in me patience and courtesy to the other drivers on the road, just as how You grant them with patience as well. It is also good to pray for the Lord’s protection against any kind of sickness during travel to fully enjoy our trip.

Dear God, as we travel today, I pray that You bless us with Your protection against any kind of sickness during our trip. Bless us with Your mercy and grace that we may be kept in good health as we travel. May the people around us during this trip also be in good health. Protect us from any virus that can bring harm to our health. Give us wisdom to also exercise caution and good hygiene throughout this trip. May the foods that we consume throughout this trip be cleansed by You to provide us with the nutrition to protect our bodies, the holy temples of Yours.  All this I pray in Jesus’ name, Amen.

We can also bless our friends and loved ones with a prayer for safe travel before they embark on a trip. Here is a prayer that we can lift for a loved one’s safe journey before they travel. 

Dear Lord, today I surrender my loved one into Your hands. I ask that You bless him/her with a safe trip and cover him/her with Your protection. Shine Your face on him/her Lord, so that no harm come upon him/her and shower them with Your grace as they go. I pray that they would experience Your presence and Your peace during this trip that no trouble or mishap would come upon them. 6. Prayer for Family Protection and Harmony During Trip

It’s always good for us to say a prayer before any family trips for God’s protection to be upon us and our loved ones. 

Heavenly Father, I lift up my family to You today as we travel. I pray for You to watch over us and keep us from harm. Guide us and guard us during our trip and keep us out of any unforeseen danger. Protect us from any kind of sickness as well while we are traveling. Let there be harmony among us and may love and peace reign throughout this trip. Help us exercise patience and forgiveness towards each other that there would be no squabbles among us during this journey. May our journey be smooth and peaceful, and may we get to our destination safely. I pray this in Jesus’ name, Amen.

As we embark on our trips, let us pray for a safe voyage and ask the Lord to guard you and no harm shall come to you.

You will not fear the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by day, nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness, nor the plague that destroys at midday. –Psalm 91:5-6

See, I am sending an angel ahead of you to guard you along the way and to bring you to the place I have prepared. –Exodus 23:20

Lord Jesus, I pray today lifting the trip I have planned with my friends into your hands. I ask heavenly Father that as we go together on this trip, let your Holy angels shield and protect us.

If you say, “The  Lord  is my refuge,” and you make the Most High your dwelling, no harm will overtake you, no disaster will come near your tent. – Psalm91:9-10

Dear Lord, I pray today and ask Father for travelling mercies for my siblings. Lord, please keep my sibling safe as she travels.

Lord, I ask that you will be with her throughout this journey. Please keep her protected and safe and let the enemy have no access to her as she goes on this Journey.

Father, I pray that she will not feel alone on this journey. I ask that she will not be scared, but rather, she will always have the assurance of your protection in Jesus’ mighty name.

Lord, you are the only refuge and hiding place we know as a family, so please keep her safe. May nothing scare her in Jesus mighty amen, Amen!

Conclusion.

Our most high Father is always ever ready to offer His protection, and that is why we can count on Him for travel protection. Our God is more than able to keep us safe.

It is always a good thing to commit our ways into his hands. The world seems to be crazy these days, and only Abba can keep us safe from harm’s way.

My favorite travel moments happen when I connect what I see with the good news in  Scripture  verses. Scripture references often increase my own understanding of various locations, especially in a foreign country. Bible verses and prayers for safe travel put our hearts and minds at ease.

Here are some of my favorite travel Bible verses organized by category for easy reference. Remember, the Lord keeps you close at all times.

1. God’s Protection

You are never without God’s strong right hand and faithful presence. Such a beautiful truth strengthens a man’s heart and a woman’s steps to be brave!

1) Luke 4:10  – “He will command His angels concerning you to guard you carefully.” 2) Proverbs 3:23-24  – “Then you will go on your way in safety, and your foot will not stumble. When you lie down, you will not be afraid; when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet.” 3) Psalm 121:7-8  – “The Lord will keep you from all harm—he will watch over your life; the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.” 4) Psalm 91:2, 4   – “This I declare about the Lord: He alone is my refuge, my place of safety; He is my God, and I trust him. If you are traveling to a new place that is unfamiliar to you, your peace of mind may take a hit. You may not even speak the local language. The Apostle Paul certainly understood those challenges.

3. Good Success

How we define a travel “success” varies. I deem a trip successful when three criteria are met: 

• I saw new destinations in God’s creation;
• I met new people; and
• I learned many new things that gave me a greater appreciation of God and His hand over my life.

Regardless of how you define a successful trip, here are a few words to the faith and faithful to keep close.

12) Psalm 23:3  – “He refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for His name’s sake.” 13) Proverbs 16:9  – “The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps.” 14) Proverbs 3:3-5  – “Let not steadfast love and faithfulness forsake you; bind them around your neck; write them on the tablet of your heart.   So you will find favor and good success in the sight of God and man.”

The Psalms in  God’s holy Word  contain extraordinary words of faith to guide believers. I keep Psalm 139 close at hand as I travel. When God is your comfort zone, the whole earth is your oyster. And that is no little thing!

15) Psalm 139:3-10 (NLT)  – “You see me when I travel and when I rest at home. You know everything I do.   You know what I am going to say even before I say it, Lord.   You go before me and follow me. You place your hand of blessing on my head.   Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too great for me to understand!   I can never escape from your Spirit! I can never get away from your presence!   If I go up to heaven, you are there; if I go down to the grave, you are there.   If I ride the wings of the dawn, if I dwell by the farthest oceans,   even there your hand will guide me, and your strength will support me.” 16) Psalm 139:3-10 (ESV)  – “You search out my path and my lying down and are acquainted with all my ways.   Even before a word is on my tongue, behold, O Lord, you know it altogether.   You hem me in, behind and before, and lay your hand upon me.   Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high; I cannot attain it.   Where shall I go from your Spirit? Or where shall I flee from your presence?   If I ascend to heaven, you are there! If I make my bed in the depths of the earth, you are there!   If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea,   even there your hand shall lead me, and your right hand shall hold me.”

Praying daily keeps the  Word of God  and God’s love vibrant as you enjoy God’s creation where you travel. His Holy Spirit inside of you is the voice of the Lord directing you the right way.

17) Heavenly Father, thank you for the opportunity and joy to travel in this season of my life. You have kept me and my loved ones safe, and I am grateful. Allow me to cherish the life of every living thing on my journey and return me home safely. In Jesus’ Name, Amen. 18) Lord, I am traveling where You have opened the door. The world can often seem like a dangerous place. Each day we can face the fear of things we cannot control - including pandemics, wars, and spiritual warfare . We want to protect our loved ones and ourselves safe from physical and emotional harm. Prayer is a powerful tool that we can use to call upon God's protection and safekeeping.  God is always listening and promises to keep us under the shadow of His wings. If you are praying for safe travel always start your prayer with “thanks”! God is active in our lives whether we acknowledge Him or not, but He loves to hear our praise (through prayer, singing, or other areas of worship).

Starting a prayer with “thanks” also helps set the tone for the prayer. A prayer is give-and-take, so we shouldn’t only come to God when we want something (although you can pray about anything, anytime).

• Explain Your Situation (Confess Your Shortcomings)

If we are praying for health, safety, and stress during travel we are telling God that we can’t do it alone. We need His help and it’s important to tell God that we need Him. God is always there for us and willing to listen and to help!

If you know your family with experience challenges during travel, tell God your worries and He will provide.

• Ask For Guidance

Once you’ve shared your shortcomings, ask for guidance. God will provide guidance even if you don’t hear Him. You will see His work in you and He can make your trip more enjoyable.

Knowing that God is beside you during travel will put your mind and body at ease, not to mention it will help relax others on your flight.

• Focus On Others

It’s often the case in prayers that we focus on ourselves. After all, who doesn’t want to talk about themselves.

"Priestly Blessings" Prayer from Scripture:

Numbers 6:22-27 is known as the “Priestly Blessing” or sometimes the “Aaronic Benediction.” There are seven requests made in this prayer.

The LORD said to Moses, "Tell Aaron and his sons, 'This is how you are to bless the Israelites. Say to them: "’The LORD bless you and keep you; the LORD make his face shine upon you and be gracious to you; the LORD turn his face toward you and give you peace."' "So they will put my name on the Israelites, and I will bless them."

1. The Lord bless you… The word “bless” means to “provide favor or benefit.” Father, we pray that for our children. You are the Eternal God. Please place Your great kindness and advantage on those we love. May they be approved and favored by You.

2. and keep you… The Hebrew word “keep” means to “watch, guard, defend.” This is a prayer for protection. Father, my children are not perfect. They are going to make mistakes. But please watch over them and guard them again mistakes of youth that are unalterable. Please defend them against temptation. Protect them against Satan who desires to devour them.

4. and be gracious to you… Grace is God’s undeserved favor. He gives us what we don’t deserve. Father, thank You for Your gift of grace. I pray that gift to be poured out on my children. Following that great gift of salvation, please show them your kindness and love in all the endeavors of their lives.

5. the Lord turn his face toward you… Here is a request for God’s fellowship. Father, thank You, that because of their trust in Jesus, the Holy Spirit lives in my children. Please walk with them in a powerful way. Enable them to submit to the Spirit’s control day by day and moment by moment.

6. and give you peace. The Hebrew word for peace used here is “shalom.” It means “completeness, wholeness, and contentment.” Lord, please calm my children’s fears; soothe their anxious souls. Keep them complete and whole in their thinking, emotions, desires, and actions.

7. So they will put my name on ___________ (the name of your child/children). This is a request of identification. Lord, please place Your holy mark on my children. Set them apart to be used by You. I love them but You love them more. You love them with an everlasting love. May they represent You well on their earthly journey. In NJ, Wiccans and witches have big plans for 'supercharged' energy of April solar eclipse

On April 8, a total solar eclipse will darken skies over North America, transforming day into night.

It's a scene that will strike many as magical or ominous. For some, it will also will be highly spiritual.

Across North Jersey and throughout the world, many Wiccans , pagans and Druids view 2024's eclipse as a source of powerful energy that can bring about personal transformation and healing. Although witches have traditionally viewed the solar eclipse as a bad omen, many say they will attempt to harness the energy of this latest version toward positive change in the world.

It's "a powerful and highly energetic time, and this one will be especially good for healing our pasts and awakening the fire within," said Alexa Branco of Hackensack, who runs The Bruja’s Tomb , an online "metaphysical store" that sells witchy wares such as cleaning candles, crystals and instruction in reading Tarot cards.

A solar eclipse occurs only during a new moon, which to Branco and her fellow witches represents a new beginning.

"Throw in the fact that the eclipse is taking place in fiery Aries, which marks the astrological new year and onset of spring, and it is a time supercharged for transformation," Branco said.

How Wiccans will greet 2024 eclipse

Scientists will tell you the sun disappears during an eclipse because it aligns at the perfect angle and distance with the moon, which will block its light and reveal the fiery corona around the star's edge.

To adherents of nontraditional spiritual movements like Wicca — which has grown in popularity as more Americans  leave organized religion — it's an opportunity to tap into energies that flow throughout the natural and spiritual world. Witchcraft is a practice, and Wicca is a religion.

New Jersey is not in the path of totality for April's solar eclipse , the most significant in the United States in more than six years and the last in the country for two decades. But astronomers say about 90% to 95% of our star will be hidden in the skies above the Garden State.

Branco plans to meditate under the eclipse with a yellow candle, chosen because its color represents the solar plexus, "which is where our inner fire lives. It is one of our main energy centers and connects us to the sun, so a yellow candle helps to evoke this energy."

Through prayer and meditation, she will attempt to draw that power into her candle. "I'm charging the object with the energies of the day, in order to bring that energy into my home and disperse it out into the universe," Branco said.

A wakeup call for the planet

Oberon Zell, 81, a neopagan writer and religious leader in Asheville, North Carolina, said the eclipse is associated with positive transformation. He will observe the day with a group of Druids in northern Ohio, where they will be in the path of the total eclipse.

"We are planning a big gathering for directing our energy towards planet-healing, saving our Mother Earth and turning the tide of human aggression. We need to rid our planet of the destructive forces," he said. "The eclipse is a wakeup call to people to treat each other and the planet better."

Jason Mankey runs a coven — a congregation of witches — in the San Francisco Bay area and writes about witchcraft. He said many witches believe "you shouldn't do any magical work during an eclipse because, in the ancient world, eclipses were seen as bad things because people didn't know why they were occurring.

"Most of us today are pretty excited about them because they happen so rarely," he said. "It's a cool thing to be a part of."

Meditations and rituals

John Beckett, a Druid and author in Texas, said, "These events are powerful. They can, in my experience, speed up magic because the sun goes from bright to dark to bright in minutes, rather than in a whole day. It's an amazing natural occurrence and something we can look at and appreciate."

"I will say a few prayers and make a small offering to ask my gods and spirits for help in whatever the eclipse brings," Beckett added.

Lorraine Henrich, whose coven is based in Fairfield, said that traditionally, spells are not performed on the day of such phenomena because "you cannot access solar or lunar energies as effectively when they are overshadowed by an eclipse. In ancient times people felt that a solar eclipse brought doom or bad luck."

In Ringwood, Meghan McSweeney, a self-described "eclectic witch," said the April 8 event is about relationships: "our relationship with others, ourselves and also the divine. Eclipse season isn’t something that is meant to be controlled, but something to surrender to, meaning to go with the flow of the energy that is coming in for great change and growth."

She'll celebrate by meditating on relationships and personal growth. She will also perform a cord-cutting ritual to dismiss "those relationships we wish to fully let go" and an "abundance blessing" to ensure "the seeds we plant now are successful for the rest of the year."

An eclipse can "usher in endings for certain relationships and bring beginnings for others," she said. "It is a time of dynamic change."

What's a witch? Who are Wiccans? A primer

• Wicca is among the largest pagan groups, and its followers often practice witchcraft, said Helen Berger, a women's studies professor at Brandeis University who writes about witchcraft. But the terms witch and Wiccan are not interchangeable, she said. Although Wicca is a form of witchcraft, not all witches are Wiccans.
• The modern Wicca movement was established in England in the 1940s, came to the U.S. in the 1960s and began to grow in earnest in the 1970s.
• It always emphasized magic and later began to develop an emphasis on nature and environmental responsibility. Women's empowerment became a key theme in the '70s, Berger said.
• Wicca and witchcraft are part of a larger pagan movement that lacks a formal structure or church but instead reveres several deities and focuses on Earth and its cycles, including solstices, equinoxes and cross days that fall in between. Witches often celebrate moon cycles and the rotation of the seasons throughout the year through rituals.
• The number of Americans who identify with Wicca or paganism rose from 134,000 in 2001 to nearly 2 million in 2021, according to Berger. The growth of TikTok witches and others on social media suggests that the numbers identifying as witches in America keep growing, she added.

'Our prayers have been answered': Sister of man jailed indefinitely speaks as he is set to meet son for first time in 12 years

A man who has been serving a controversial indefinite prison sentence is set to reunite with his son after 12 years apart.

Thomas White , who was handed an IPP (Imprisonment for Public Protection) sentence in 2012 for stealing a mobile phone, has not seen his son, Kayden, since he was nine months old.

White, 40, was handed a two-year minimum jail sentence under IPP, four months before the sentences were abolished - but remains in prison 12 years later.

However, following an intervention from Lord Blunkett - who introduced IPPs when he was home secretary back in 2003 - Mr White has been granted permission to see his son later this month.

Mr White's sister, Clara White, said the meeting was a "victory" for her family - but they had to "take the law into their own hands" to see change.

"Our prayers have been answered," she told Sky News.

"Campaigning on IPP - I wouldn't wish it on anybody. I don't think anyone would want to walk in our shoes, it's been a tireless job.

"Although I am happy, I still feel bitterness about what was allowed to happen and that no legal team would help us. We took the law into our own hands to see the man who was the architect of this sentence to help us. I had no other choice."

IPP is a prison sentence with no release date that was intended for serious violent and sexual offenders who posed a significant risk of serious harm to the public but whose crimes did not warrant a life term.

Although the government's stated aim was public protection, concerns quickly grew that IPP sentences were being applied too broadly and catching more minor offenders - with many serving time in prison much longer than their initial term.

In 2012 they were abolished, but the change was not applied retrospectively, leaving 2,852 IPP prisoners behind bars, including 1,227 who have never been released.

Last month, Ms White travelled to London with her nephew to meet Lord Blunkett, the architect of IPP who has expressed "deep regret" over how they were implemented.

Ms White thanked Lord Blunkett and said he was "very sympathetic" adding: "He listened with great compassion."

"What's happened now doesn't make it right," she said. "Kayden and Thomas can't recapture those years - they have to pick up now and start their relationship now."

Lord Blunkett's intervention in Mr White's case comes as the House of Lords is set to vote on a series of amendments to the government's Victims and Prisoners Bill later this month.

One amendment, tabled by Baroness Fox of Buckley, is calling for a resentencing of the remaining IPP population.

The government has so far resisted calls to resentence the remaining IPP prisoners, citing fears over public safety.

However, data obtained by Sky News through a Freedom of Information (FOI) request shows only 83 IPP prisoners who have been released since 2012 have been convicted of a serious further offence (SFO) upon or after their release, including those who may have been released, recalled back to custody and rereleased.

Ms White urged peers in the House of Lords to back Baroness Buckley's amendment, saying: "IPP has not just had an effect on prisoners mentally, it has had an effect on the families and we have all been punished and served a sentence.

"It's a wreckage and they should help us clear it up now."

A Ministry of Justice spokesperson said: "We have reduced the number of unreleased IPP prisoners by three-quarters since we scrapped the sentence in 2012, with a 12% fall in the last year alone where the Parole Board deemed prisoners safe to release.

"We have also taken decisive action to curtail licence periods and continue to help those still in custody to progress towards release including improving access to rehabilitation programmes and mental health support."

As international travel grows, so does US use of technology. A look at how it’s used at airports

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Belgian family of four was on their fourth trip to the United States. They had been dreading the long line at passport control when they entered the country but had heard about a new app they could use to ease their way and decided to give it a shot. Within minutes, they had bypassed the long line at Washington Dulles International Airport and were waiting for their luggage.

“It was always a long row,” said Piet De Staercke of the line to go through passport screening. He, his wife and two sons were visiting Washington and Chicago. “We were a bit scared. But now with the app, it’s amazing.”

As travel continues to boom following coronavirus pandemic-related slumps, U.S. Customs and Border Protection is expanding the use of technology like the Mobile Passport Control app the De Staercke family used in an effort to process the ever-growing number of passengers traveling internationally. And with events like a rare solar eclipse , the Olympics in Paris, and summer holidays still driving international travel, those numbers don’t look set to drop anytime soon.

Customs and Border Protection officials gave The Associated Press a behind-the-scenes look at some of the technologies they’ve been using and what to expect in the months and years ahead.

THE NUMBERS

During fiscal year 2023, the agency processed over 394 million travelers at the ports of entry. That’s a 24% increase over the previous year. When looking at the country’s top 20 airports by passenger volume, officers processed 31% more travelers while average wait times increased 11%. And at some of the busiest airports, the wait times have had negligible increases or even decreased. At JFK Airport in New York, for example, wait times went down — by 0.4 of a second on average — while CBP officers processed 33% more travelers.

Increasingly, people are traveling internationally with their families rather than going abroad alone for business.

Officials are moving more toward app-based technologies to speed passengers’ movement through the airport. The Mobile Passport Control app used by the Belgian family is one example. It’s available to U.S. citizens, but also to lawful permanent residents, certain Canadians and travelers from countries who are part of the Visa Waiver Program who’ve already been to the U.S. at least once.

Passengers upload their photos and information to the app. When they enter the screening area, they get routed to a separate line. The officer then just needs to take a photo of one member of the family and it pulls up the entire group’s photos and their information.

CBP launched the app in 2021 but is now trying to get more people to use it, including by working with airlines to allow the app to be downloaded while the plane is in flight and putting up signs at airports to let travelers know about it. Last year, a record 4.1 million people came into the country using the app.

“Any second that we can save through the process, it saves time because it adds up eventually,” said Marc Calixte, the top CBP official at Dulles.

Last September, the agency also created an app specifically for passengers who use Global Entry. That’s one of the “Trusted Traveler” programs CBP runs that allows certain low-risk passengers who make an appointment for an interview and submit to a background check to travel through customs and passport control more quickly when they arrive in the U.S.

IMPROVEMENTS TO GLOBAL ENTRY

Last year saw a record 3.2 million people apply to the Global Entry program, and this year the agency is on track to field about 4 million applications, said Brendan Blackmer, CBP branch chief for the Trusted Traveler Programs. But passengers have complained about how long it can take to get applications processed and their struggles to get appointments. On its website, CBP says it averages four to six months to process applications. In February, 17 members of Congress wrote to CBP demanding information, saying they were fielding complaints from constituents over the wait times.

Blackmer said the agency has pushed to improve the process, including by allowing nearly 100% of people renewing their status to do so without having to come into an enrollment center. That frees up appointments for first-time applicants. And it’s pushing for more people to be able to complete the process while they’re in the airport, either leaving or returning from a trip.

There are also more appointments available, Blackmer said, although some cities like San Francisco are still seeing so much demand that appointments can take more than 90 days to get.

“We’ve done a lot of work the past year and a half, and the agency’s in a better position now and able to meet the demand for the program. And we’re going to continue to work,” Blackmer said.

FEE INCREASES

Come Oct. 1, people using some of the Trusted Traveler Programs will see increases to the fees they pay. The cost of NEXUS, a U.S.-Canadian program designed to ease travel between the two countries for pre-approved travelers, will go from $50 to $120. Global Entry will go from $100 to $120. SENTRI, for pre-approved travelers on the southern border with Mexico, will go down, from $122.50 to $120.

But the fees will now cover all kids under 18 regardless of which program you’re in.

What’s unchanged is that approval for the programs will still be good for five years.

Calixte said possibly by the end of summer the airport will be opening so-called E-Gates where passengers using Global Entry can use the app, bypass an officer at a booth, and instead go to a gate where their photo is taken and matched to their passport, and, assuming no red flags arise, the gates open and they pass out of the customs and passport control area and are on their way.

Further on the horizon, Blackmer said the agency is exploring a concept called smart queuing, where the app assigns passengers to certain lines depending on information they have entered into the app, such as whether they have goods to declare.

CBP Releases March 2024 Monthly Update

WASHINGTON — U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) released operational statistics today for March 2024. CBP monthly reporting can be viewed on CBP’s Stats and Summaries webpage .

“CBP - in coordination with our partners across the Federal government as well as foreign partners - continues to take significant actions to disrupt criminal networks amidst unprecedented hemispheric migration activity,” said Troy A. Miller, Senior Official Performing the Duties of the Commissioner. “Encounters at our southern border are lower right now, but we remain prepared for changes, continually managing operations to respond to ever-shifting transnational criminal activities and migration patterns.”

CBP continues to work closely with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) to quickly process individuals encountered at the border and remove those who do not establish a legal basis to remain in the United States, delivering strengthened consequences promulgated by the Circumvention of Lawful Pathways rule and its associated measures. From May 12, 2023 to April 3, 2024, DHS has removed or returned over 660,000 individuals, the vast majority of whom crossed the southwest border, including more than 102,000 individual family members. The majority of all individuals encountered at the southwest border over the past three years have been removed, returned, or expelled. Total removals and returns since mid-May exceed removals and returns in every full fiscal year since 2011.

Ensuring Border Security and Managing Migration 

CBP continues to expeditiously process and remove individuals who do not have a legal basis to remain in the country. We are working together with our domestic and foreign partners to jointly disrupt irregular migration across the region, offering safe, orderly, and lawful pathways for intending migrants and taking action against ruthless smugglers who continue to spread falsehoods and show disregard for the safety and well-being of vulnerable migrants. We are also working alongside U.S. government partners to target transnational criminal organizations and smugglers who take advantage of and profit from migrants and taking new measures to stop individuals from exploiting traditional travel methods for migration.

In March 2024, the U.S. Border Patrol recorded 137,480 encounters between ports of entry along the southwest border.  In March, encounters between ports of entry along the southwest border were 45% lower than in December 2023 and 16% lower than March 2023.

CBP had a total of 189,372 encounters along the southwest border in March 2024, including U.S. Border Patrol encounters between ports of entry, as well as individuals who presented themselves at ports of entry (including those with CBP One™ appointments, detailed further below).

CBP continually analyzes and responds to changes in migration patterns, particularly irregular migration outside of lawful pathways and border crossings. We work with our federal and international partners to combat human smuggling. The fact remains: the United States continues to enforce immigration law, and those without a legal basis to remain will be removed. Migrants attempting to enter without authorization are subject to removal under Title 8 authorities.

The U.S. Border Patrol has undertaken significant efforts in recent years to expand capacity to aid and rescue individuals in distress. To prevent the loss of life, CBP initiated a Missing Migrant Program in 2017 that locates noncitizens reported missing, rescues individuals in distress, and reunifies decedents’ remains with their families in the border region. In March, the U.S. Border Patrol conducted 439 rescues, a 77% increase from January 2024. This brings the FY 2024 total rescues to 2,488 .

CBP One™ App   

The CBP One™ mobile application remains a key component of DHS’s efforts to incentivize noncitizens to use lawful, safe, humane, and orderly pathways and processes. Generally, noncitizens who cross between the ports of entry or who present themselves at a port of entry without making a CBP One™ appointment are subject to the Circumvention of Lawful Pathways rule. This rule presumes asylum ineligibility for those who fail to use lawful processes, with certain exceptions. DHS encourages migrants to utilize lawful processes, rather than having migrants take the dangerous journey to cross unlawfully between the ports of entry, which also carries consequences under Title 8.

The CBP One™ app allows noncitizens throughout central or northern Mexico who lack documents sufficient for admission to the United States to schedule an appointment and remain in place until presenting at a preferred port of entry for their appointment, reducing migrants’ need to crowd into immediate border areas. Use of the CBP One™ app to schedule appointments at ports of entry has increased CBP’s capacity to process migrants more efficiently and orderly while cutting out unscrupulous smugglers who endanger and profit from vulnerable migrants.

In March, CBP processed 44,000 individuals through appointments at ports of entry utilizing advanced information submitted in CBP One™. Since the appointment scheduling function in CBP One™ was introduced in January 2023 through the end of March 2024, more than 547,000 individuals have successfully scheduled appointments to present at ports of entry using CBP One™ instead of risking their lives in the hands of smugglers. The top nationalities who have been processed are Venezuelan, Haitian, and Mexican.

A percentage of daily available appointments are allocated to the earliest registered CBP One™ profiles, so noncitizens who have been trying to obtain appointments for the longest time are prioritized. CBP is continually monitoring and evaluating the application to ensure its functionality and guard against bad actors. 

CHNV Parole Processes

On January 5, 2023, DHS announced processes providing certain Cubans, Haitians, and Nicaraguans, who have a supporter in the United States, undergo and clear robust security vetting, and meet other eligibility criteria, to come to the United States in a safe, orderly, and lawful way. These processes were built on the success of the process for Venezuelans established in October 2022; they are publicly available online, and DHS has been providing regular updates on their use to the public. This is part of the Administration’s strategy to combine expanded lawful pathways with stronger consequences to reduce irregular migration and have kept hundreds of thousands of people from migrating irregularly.

Through the end of March 2024, 404,000 Cubans, Haitians, Nicaraguans, and Venezuelans arrived lawfully on commercial flights and were granted parole under these processes. Specifically, 86,000 Cubans, 168,000 Haitians, 77,000 Nicaraguans, 102,000 Venezuelans were vetted and authorized for travel; and 84,000 Cubans, 154,000 Haitians, 69,000 Nicaraguans, and 95,000 Venezuelans arrived lawfully and were granted parole.

Safeguarding Communities by Interdicting Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs

As the largest law enforcement agency in the United States, CBP is uniquely positioned to detect, identify, and seize illicit drugs before they enter our communities. CBP’s combination of interdiction and intelligence capabilities, complemented by its border search authorities, scientific services, non-intrusive inspection equipment, and canine detection teams, places it at the forefront of the U.S. government’s efforts to combat illicit fentanyl and other dangerous drugs.

CBP continues to conduct operations, including Operation Apollo, which target the smuggling of illicit fentanyl and other dangerous drugs. These operations leverage intelligence and investigative information to target drug traffickers’ supply chains and interdict items required in the production of illicit fentanyl, including precursor chemicals, pill presses and parts, movement of finished product, and illicit proceeds.

Nationwide in March, fentanyl seizures increased by 16.1% compared to February and heroin seizures by 19.6% .

To date in FY 2024 through the end of March, CBP has seized 10,026 pounds of fentanyl. CBP has stopped more fentanyl in the last two years than in the previous five years combined, and we continue to optimize our intelligence and field operations to stop these deadly substances from reaching American communities.

Facilitating Lawful Trade and Travel 

 As international travel continues to increase, CBP is leveraging technology to streamline efficiency and increase security at air and land ports of entry. Travelers are encouraged to utilize CBP’s mobile apps to enhance their travel experience, including the Global Entry Mobile Application and Mobile Passport Control , as well as new Global Entry Touchless Portals at nearly all international airports across the United States, which protect passenger privacy and expedite arrival processing by eliminating paper receipts.

Travelers arriving by air into the United States increased 13.9% from March 2023 to March 2024, passenger vehicles processed at ports of entry increased by 2.9% , and pedestrians arriving by land at ports of entry increased 10.8% over the same period.  

CBP works diligently with the trade community and port operators to ensure that merchandise is cleared as efficiently as possible and to strengthen international supply chains and improve border security. In March 2024, CBP processed more than 2.8 million entry summaries valued at more than $275 billion , identifying estimated duties of nearly $6.2 billion to be collected by the U.S. government. In March, trade via the ocean environment accounted for 39.67% of the total import value, followed by air, truck, and rail.

Protecting Consumers, Eradicating Forced Labor from Supply Chains, and Promoting Economic Security     

CBP continues to lead U.S. government efforts to eliminate goods from the supply chain made with forced labor from the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of China. In March, CBP stopped 749 shipments valued at more than $32 million for further examination based on the suspected use of forced labor.

Intellectual property rights violations continue to put America’s innovation economy at risk. Counterfeit and pirated goods threaten the competitiveness of U.S. businesses, the livelihoods of American workers, and the health and safety of consumers.

Consumers are encouraged to be alert to the dangers of counterfeit goods especially when shopping online as they support criminal activity, hurt American businesses, and often have materials or ingredients that can pose serious health and safety risks. Every year CBP seizes millions of counterfeit products worth billions of dollars had they been genuine. In March, CBP seized 1,633 shipments that contained counterfeit goods valued at more than $384 million . CBP is on the frontline of textiles and trade agreements enforcement, combating textile imports that are not compliant with U.S. trade laws. Protecting the domestic textile industry and American consumers is vital to U.S. national security, health care, and economic priorities. Toward this end, CBP is intensifying its targeting and enforcement efforts to increase and expedite the prosecution of illegal customs practices. CBP’s efforts include de minimis compliance, forced labor enforcement, cargo compliance, regulatory audits, and public awareness. This month DHS announced an enhanced strategy to combat illicit trade and level the playing field for the American textile industry, which accounts for over 500,000 U.S. jobs and is critical for our national security. The plan details the actions CBP and Homeland Security Investigations will take to hold perpetrators accountable for customs violations, and safeguard the American textile industry.

Defending our Nation’s Agricultural System  

 Through targeting, detection, and interception, CBP agriculture specialists work to prevent threats from entering the United States.  

CBP issued 7,105 emergency action notifications for restricted and prohibited plant and animal products entering the United States in March 2024. CBP conducted 106,410 positive passenger inspections and issued 841 civil penalties and/or violations to the traveling public for failing to declare prohibited agriculture items.
