What is a residential school trip?

Residential school trips take place over a few days and pupils are required to stay away from home. Residential trips for schools are usually activity-based and are one of the first experiences for children staying away from parents/guardians.

Why should students go on a residential school trip over a day trip?

Residential school trips have been proven to have a positive effect on students’ self-esteem and confidence levels, helping to improve their emotional health, physical health and mental well-being.

To put it simply, a day trip doesn’t provide school children with the opportunities to improve their soft skills and social development. Having your pupils attend a local school with PGL allows them the space to safely grow and discover new passions.

Why are residential school trips good for students?

Residential school trips take pupils out of their usual classroom surroundings and help them develop crucial life skills. Here at PGL, we have tonnes of adventure centres across the UK for your students to explore.

What are the benefits of residential school trips?

Residential school trips are a great way for students to improve their confidence and independence. Experiencing new locations and staying away from home will help children gain new skills, knowledge and life experience that will help them grow and develop. 3 ways that residential school trips can benefit pupils:

  • Boost a child’s self-confidence
  • Encourage good behaviour around other children
  • Broaden their social network

Young people may also benefit from one of our Revision Weekends for schools. With dedicated classrooms for teaching and a diverse range of PGL residential activities, these are particularly beneficial during exam season. This combination creates an environment where students can not only relax but also absorb information more effectively. Elevate the learning experience by booking your residential school trip today!

Will children be safe on a residential school trip?

PGL has always placed a huge emphasis on safety – as a founder member of BAPA (British Activity Providers Association) and a licence holder for activities in the scope of AALA (Adventure Activities Licencing Authority) regulations. Canoeing at all our centres is approved by the BCU (British Canoe Union) and all our sailing centres are recognised RYA (Royal Yachting Association) teaching establishments.

PGL’s excellent reputation ensures that we receive a wealth of applications from enthusiastic and competent young adults. The candidates selected are offered contracts of employment subject to satisfactory checks (at an enhanced level) via the Disclosure and Barring Service, the successful completion of pre-employment training, and a favourable performance during their probationary period.

You can rest assured that your children will be safe on a PGL residential school trip.

What is the accommodation like on a residential school trip?

Details vary by location; you can find specific information on the dedicated PGL centres page for your chosen location. Accommodation from our local school trip centres ranges from tents, to en suite wooden lodges, dormitories in mansion houses and more.

All of the accommodation PGL offers are safe and kept to a good clean standard.

All of our sites are inspected by relevant health and safety inspectors and authorities.

Compliance status

We firmly believe that the internet should be available and accessible to anyone, and are committed to providing a website that is accessible to the widest possible audience, regardless of circumstance and ability.

To fulfill this, we aim to adhere as strictly as possible to the World Wide Web Consortium’s (W3C) Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.1 (WCAG 2.1) at the AA level. These guidelines explain how to make web content accessible to people with a wide array of disabilities. Complying with those guidelines helps us ensure that the website is accessible to all people: blind people, people with motor impairments, visual impairment, cognitive disabilities, and more.

This website utilizes various technologies that are meant to make it as accessible as possible at all times. We utilize an accessibility interface that allows persons with specific disabilities to adjust the website’s UI (user interface) and design it to their personal needs.

Additionally, the website utilizes an AI-based application that runs in the background and optimizes its accessibility level constantly. This application remediates the website’s HTML, adapts Its functionality and behavior for screen-readers used by the blind users, and for keyboard functions used by individuals with motor impairments.

If you’ve found a malfunction or have ideas for improvement, we’ll be happy to hear from you. You can reach out to the website’s operators by using the following email

Screen-reader and keyboard navigation

Our website implements the ARIA attributes (Accessible Rich Internet Applications) technique, alongside various different behavioral changes, to ensure blind users visiting with screen-readers are able to read, comprehend, and enjoy the website’s functions. As soon as a user with a screen-reader enters your site, they immediately receive a prompt to enter the Screen-Reader Profile so they can browse and operate your site effectively. Here’s how our website covers some of the most important screen-reader requirements, alongside console screenshots of code examples:

Screen-reader optimization: we run a background process that learns the website’s components from top to bottom, to ensure ongoing compliance even when updating the website. In this process, we provide screen-readers with meaningful data using the ARIA set of attributes. For example, we provide accurate form labels; descriptions for actionable icons (social media icons, search icons, cart icons, etc.); validation guidance for form inputs; element roles such as buttons, menus, modal dialogues (popups), and others. Additionally, the background process scans all of the website’s images and provides an accurate and meaningful image-object-recognition-based description as an ALT (alternate text) tag for images that are not described. It will also extract texts that are embedded within the image, using an OCR (optical character recognition) technology. To turn on screen-reader adjustments at any time, users need only to press the Alt+1 keyboard combination. Screen-reader users also get automatic announcements to turn the Screen-reader mode on as soon as they enter the website.

These adjustments are compatible with all popular screen readers, including JAWS and NVDA.

Keyboard navigation optimization: The background process also adjusts the website’s HTML, and adds various behaviors using JavaScript code to make the website operable by the keyboard. This includes the ability to navigate the website using the Tab and Shift+Tab keys, operate dropdowns with the arrow keys, close them with Esc, trigger buttons and links using the Enter key, navigate between radio and checkbox elements using the arrow keys, and fill them in with the Spacebar or Enter key.Additionally, keyboard users will find quick-navigation and content-skip menus, available at any time by clicking Alt+1, or as the first elements of the site while navigating with the keyboard. The background process also handles triggered popups by moving the keyboard focus towards them as soon as they appear, and not allow the focus drift outside of it.

Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Disability profiles supported in our website

  • Epilepsy Safe Mode: this profile enables people with epilepsy to use the website safely by eliminating the risk of seizures that result from flashing or blinking animations and risky color combinations.
  • Visually Impaired Mode: this mode adjusts the website for the convenience of users with visual impairments such as Degrading Eyesight, Tunnel Vision, Cataract, Glaucoma, and others.
  • Cognitive Disability Mode: this mode provides different assistive options to help users with cognitive impairments such as Dyslexia, Autism, CVA, and others, to focus on the essential elements of the website more easily.
  • ADHD Friendly Mode: this mode helps users with ADHD and Neurodevelopmental disorders to read, browse, and focus on the main website elements more easily while significantly reducing distractions.
  • Blindness Mode: this mode configures the website to be compatible with screen-readers such as JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver, and TalkBack. A screen-reader is software for blind users that is installed on a computer and smartphone, and websites must be compatible with it.
  • Keyboard Navigation Profile (Motor-Impaired): this profile enables motor-impaired persons to operate the website using the keyboard Tab, Shift+Tab, and the Enter keys. Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Additional UI, design, and readability adjustments

  • Font adjustments – users, can increase and decrease its size, change its family (type), adjust the spacing, alignment, line height, and more.
  • Color adjustments – users can select various color contrast profiles such as light, dark, inverted, and monochrome. Additionally, users can swap color schemes of titles, texts, and backgrounds, with over 7 different coloring options.
  • Animations – epileptic users can stop all running animations with the click of a button. Animations controlled by the interface include videos, GIFs, and CSS flashing transitions.
  • Content highlighting – users can choose to emphasize important elements such as links and titles. They can also choose to highlight focused or hovered elements only.
  • Audio muting – users with hearing devices may experience headaches or other issues due to automatic audio playing. This option lets users mute the entire website instantly.
  • Cognitive disorders – we utilize a search engine that is linked to Wikipedia and Wiktionary, allowing people with cognitive disorders to decipher meanings of phrases, initials, slang, and others.
  • Additional functions – we provide users the option to change cursor color and size, use a printing mode, enable a virtual keyboard, and many other functions.

Browser and assistive technology compatibility

We aim to support the widest array of browsers and assistive technologies as possible, so our users can choose the best fitting tools for them, with as few limitations as possible. Therefore, we have worked very hard to be able to support all major systems that comprise over 95% of the user market share including Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Apple Safari, Opera and Microsoft Edge, JAWS and NVDA (screen readers), both for Windows and for MAC users.

Notes, comments, and feedback

Despite our very best efforts to allow anybody to adjust the website to their needs, there may still be pages or sections that are not fully accessible, are in the process of becoming accessible, or are lacking an adequate technological solution to make them accessible. Still, we are continually improving our accessibility, adding, updating and improving its options and features, and developing and adopting new technologies. All this is meant to reach the optimal level of accessibility, following technological advancements. For any assistance, please reach out to

Primary School Groups

For many primary school children, the school residential may be their first time away from home. For such an important life experience, finding an activity centre that will give your pupils a challenging but safe experience is vital. Primary aged children will benefit most from lots of new activities and experiences, allowing them to grow in confidence and learn some new skills. A good residential activity centre will employ instructors who have the ability to work with primary school groups to make each activity session valuable for every child.

Secondary School Groups

Secondary school groups will have slightly different learning objectives when it comes to a residential activity holiday. Teachers may be looking to cement relationships within a new year group by allowing students to work together in teams, or the trip may be an opportunity to give soon to be school leavers some key skills before they enter the work place. Whatever the objective, a secondary school residential is a good way to mix curriculum linked learning with outdoor fun and adventure.

Residential Field Studies

If your school group are looking for an environmental field studies based residential trip then we can help with that too! We have a great choice of teacher led, accommodation only centres, as well as those that specialise in multi day fieldwork trips for all key stages of the curriculum. For geography or science based residential study trips, take a look at the following page: Field Studies

How to Choose a Residential Centre

Local authority managed Outdoor Education Centres have been providing outdoor learning experiences for school children since the 1950s. In recent years the number of council run centres has been in steep decline, as public spending is slashed and service provision is shifted to the private sector. Thankfully for schools wishing to book a residential activity week, there are still plenty of specialist centres available to offer adventurous activities to your students. With so many residential activity options for teachers to choose from, how do you choose between them and what is most important?

We provide a wide range of residential trips for primary and secondary schools, with destinations all across the UK. Primary school groups may be enjoying their first outdoor adventure, while secondary school students may be building on previous experiences.

Either way, we're here to help you plan and book an unforgettable residential trip that perfectly meets the needs of your group – read on to learn more or get in touch with our team to get started.

Uk residential trips for schools.

You can choose from a really exciting range of destinations within the UK for your residential school trip:

In Cornwall , students can experience the spectacular coastline and enjoy all the benefits of being by the sea. Take part in adventurous activities, find out how the beauty of the area has inspired artists, and learn more about how to take care of this precious environment.

In Holme Pierrepont near Nottingham , Lee Valley near London , or the Lake District in Cumbria, your students can try their hands at a variety of watersports.

In the West Midlands , they can have a go at skiing, snowboarding, and team-building challenges like assault courses, high ropes, and shelter building.

In Yorkshire , your students can explore the fascinating history of the city and find out why York became an important centre for chocolate making in the UK.

In the Peak District , your students can enjoy an outdoor learning experience in one of the most dramatic landscapes in the UK.

Our Travel Advisors know our destinations extremely well, so if you’re struggling to decide where to go on your school residential trip, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

Why arrange a residential trip?

Develop your student's personal and social skills.

Our residential trips offer a wide range of activities that will help your students to develop their personal and social skills. From team-building exercises, to immersing themselves in history and culture, these are experiences that your students will never forget.

After one of our trips, your students will return with greater self-confidence, improved communication skills and a real sense of pride in their achievements. They’ll be more motivated to learn new skills and may even have developed some new friendships.

And, of course, this is a fantastic opportunity for you and your students to work together in a much less formal setting, helping to develop the relationship between you ready to help you achieve more together in the following academic year.

Enjoy new experiences

School residential trips are often one of the highlights of the school calendar and something that students really look forward to. That’s because they often allow them to enjoy new experiences that they wouldn’t normally have access to.

Water sports are a particular favourite of our groups and we offer the opportunity to experience these at Holme Pierrepont, Lee Valley, and the Lake District.

Holme Pierrepont is home to the National Water Sports Centre and Lee Valley was the venue for the London 2012 canoeing events, so both of these destinations offer excellent facilities for several different water sports, including canoeing, kayaking and stand-up paddle boarding.

The Lake District, of course, offers a spectacular setting in which to try water sports for the first time. It also offers the opportunity to try adventure sports such as Ghyll Climbing.

If you want your students to enjoy a real mix of activities, the West Midlands could be a good option for your residential trip. Here, your students can have a go at an assault course, building a shelter, high ropes, archery and pedal go-karting, as well as skiing or snowboarding!

Enjoy the trip as much as your students

Originally founded by former teachers, and with many former teachers still among us, we understand the value of residential trips for schools and how to make them successful.

Your trip will be completely tailor-made, to ensure that it meets your specific requirements and learning objectives. And we’ll be on hand throughout the process to answer any questions you have.

In fact, we’ll be with you every step of the way , from now until you return home at the end of your trip. While abroad, you’ll be able to reach us with just one phone call, at any time of the day or night. And, with this comprehensive level of support while you’re away , you’ll be able to relax and enjoy your trip as much as your students.

Frequently asked questions, what are residential trips for schools.

Residential trips for schools involve students staying overnight, usually at an educational or adventure centre, as part of a learning experience outside their regular school environment. These trips are designed to enhance educational, social, and personal development.

What do kids need for residential trips?

It largely depends on the activities you have planned, where you're going, and when. For example, a summertime residential in Cornwall requires very different clothing from Yorkshire in Winter. You can check out our packing checklist as a reference guide, but if any specific gear or clothing is required for your trip, we'll discuss this during the planning stages.

Why are school residential trips important?

School residential trips are an important opportunity for children to get away from the daily routines of home and school. Instead, they get to try new activities, make friends, and learn to be independent. It's a wonderful experience for young people that mixes outdoor education with adventure.

Primary school trips.

At Rock UK we focus on really making a difference to every child that visits us. Rather than numbers through the door, our goal is to provide quality educational school trips and memories that last a lifetime.

Whether you are bringing Year One children for a taster one night adventure or your Year Six class on an action packed week away, we work closely with you to tailor all outdoor learning activities to be age appropriate.

For many children this is the first significant time they’ve spent away from home, but by the end of their school residential adventure trip their confidence will have grown massively.

Our instructors are really good at working with young children and helping them overcome fears and challenges to bring out a completely different side, which teachers may not have seen before.

We have a number of great ways to help you spend your Sports Premium including activity days and weekly courses.

Secondary School Trips

We know that it is important to get students out of their comfort zones. At Rock UK we tailor secondary school trips to include challenging outdoor education activities which help boost self-esteem.

A visit to one of our activity centres can cover many areas of the curriculum through outdoor learning including; PHSE, SMSC, maths, geography, science, RE and many more. Together we will tailor your experience to meet your learning outcomes, whether you come for a day visit or stay for a full week. Our aim is that students return to the classroom instilled with a sense of achievement and empowered to want to achieve more with a new appreciation for learning.

From team building fresher trips in Year Seven to exam Revision Retreats in Year Eleven, Rock UK centres across the country are ideal for secondary schools.

College & University Trips

Whether it’s getting to know your fellow students on a fresher’s week away, you’re planning a Christian Union house party and need a venue, or you’re looking for somewhere to host your team building session for a group of trainee doctors or business students, we have a venue that will suit your needs. You can choose an overnight residential stay or just come for the day.

We have group accommodation for 6 to 234 people depending on the centre you choose and there are various sized meeting rooms available. Not forgetting over 40 instructor led activities to break up the day, including an excellent range of team building challenges for all ages.

Revision retreats can make an enormous difference to students

Revision Retreats

Rock UK centres provide the perfect venues for your revision retreats. Revision breaks are a great way of focusing students, encouraging strong study skills going forward and reducing stress at a time when students need it most.

Your students can spend time working in teacher led sessions, on group revision tasks as well as private study time. All this in the peace and tranquillity of our beautiful sites. At home students are surrounded by distractions: television, games consoles, computers and much more.

Coming away to our sites for focused revision time can make an enormous difference to students and foster great study skills when they do return home. Combined with a schedule of active sessions students are rewarded for their hard work and encouraged to study harder. Not only does activity provide the perfect respite for a tired mind but also reduces stress. Sample revision breaks programme and prices

Home schooling Trips

Outdoor adventure learning is an important part of every child’s development and at Rock UK we recognise this by offering group adventure trips to home school students.

Our activity centres have group accommodation from 6 to 234 and this makes it possible for home school networks, of whatever size, to come together and benefit from outdoor education.

We offer over 40 instructed activities across our four nationwide centres and we’ll work with your home schooling network to tailor a programme ideally suited to your group’s individual needs.

All activities are within close proximity to the hub of the centre meaning time isn’t lost or wasted moving between activities. The activity plan is tailored to meet our wants and needs rather than having to fit in with the centre’s limitations and restrictions. Residential School Trips

Residential school trips are a great way for students to develop confidence and independence. Visiting new locations and staying away from home will help pupils gain skills, knowledge and life experience that will help them excel inside and outside of the classroom!

Here at NST, we're dedicated to providing residential school trips that nurture the academic and personal growth of students. Whether you want to stay in the UK or venture overseas, we have a selection of residential trips to suit your exact needs.

The benefits of residential school trips for students

Residential school trips provide a wealth of benefits for both primary and secondary school students. This includes:

• Building self-confidence and independence - Students get to experience different environments, giving them the opportunity to do things that they otherwise might not have the courage to try.

• Improving academic performance - Taking part in hands-on learning activities gives students the chance to expand their knowledge in alternative ways. This can boost academic performance for those who struggle with classroom learning.

• Physical development - Trips to outdoor adventure centres often involve a lot of physical activity, allowing students to try out new sports and stay active. This aids fitness performance while also encouraging sportsmanship and teamwork.

Types of residential trips for schools

NST provides an array of residential trips suitable for KS1 and KS2 students. If you're considering a UK school trip, we offer a range of packages to trip destinations such as London, York, Edinburgh and the Isle of Wight. You'll be able to teach students about the UK's rich history and cultural landmarks, as well as taking part in exciting activities like ice-skating, bowling and sightseeing!

If you'd rather venture overseas, we have a selection of enriching residential trips to popular destinations throughout Europe. Whether it's visiting the Eiffel Tower in Paris or taking in the majestic landscape of Lake Garda, your students will be able to immerse themselves in new environments and mix with the locals. This can help students gain a deeper understanding of different cultures and lifestyles, whilst improving their language skills, critical thinking and problem-solving.

Why book a residential trip with us?

Our residential school trips are designed to educate and inspire through exploration, teamwork and fun! From hands-on learning workshops to unforgettable sightseeing tours, there's never a dull moment when you book a school trip with NST. We've been planning residential trips for school groups across the UK for decades. So, there's no request we can't accommodate for.

You'll have our support from the minute you get in touch, as well as throughout your trip and when you get back home. We'll assign you a dedicated NST contact for the entire experience. Whilst you're away, you'll also have unlimited support from our specialist reps - they'll be your local experts and you can get in touch with them 24/7.

We also provide complimentary inspection visits to your chosen destination, so you can be sure it's the best option for your group or class.
