Pink‘s New Flight Path: Pop’s Bionic Woman on Her Death-Defying Stadium Tour and ‘Trustfall’ Album
In a world of hyphenates, Pink all but dares us to come up with one to describe her place in the pop landscape, besides anything so earthbound as “singer-songwriter.” Maybe “gymnast-therapist” would do it — her appeal mixes literal feats of daring with songs of dysfunction and its hoped-for cessation. As she gets to the inevitable moment in any of her shows where she acrobatically flies over arenas in a harness while encouraging her audiences to get it together before it’s too late, it’s not always clear whether the work she’s doing should be subject to American Psychological Association or Federal Aviation Administration approval.
Popular on Variety
She is not kidding about the hip replacement; hip surgery was just one of the things that had her on the operating table during the pandemic. She is freshly scarred but undaunted, as a Pink tour without aerialism is like a Pink album without multiple uses of the word “fuck.”
“Having breaks is good for my voice. Not so good for the body,” she says after putting Habanero Mountain Guy outside to sniff the sea air. “Especially during COVID — I gained 36 pounds. All I did was make sourdough and then eat the sourdough. And then I had not just the hip surgery but double disc replacement in my neck. So now I’m the bionic woman. I’ve lost those 36 pounds, and I am stronger than I’ve ever been in my life. And I’m ready to go, and I’m ready to get the hell out of here. I’ve been home way too long.”
There are motivations, especially when you have Tina Turner’s manager, Roger Davies, as your own. Asked if she ever queried Davies about any secrets to Turner’s success in keeping the touring regime going as long as she did, Pink says it never occurred to her — she knows what she witnessed with her own two eyes.
“I saw Tina when she was 69 in Christian Louboutins, running around the stage, full choreography, like a crazy person. And I thought to myself: Shit. So now I have no excuse. I look at the greats and I wanna keep up. I want to keep pushing it and be better — a better human, a better mom, a better daughter, a better sister, a better performer, a better writer. And age works against you, right? But at 43, I’m stronger than I’ve ever been in my life. I could kick my 33-year-old ass.”
As for the specifics of moonlighting as a stuntwoman, she says, “Well, it’s always interesting the day the insurance company comes to yes or no your insurance. And every time they say yes, I’m like, ‘Are you kidding me? They actually said yes?’” She shrugs. This may be the time when she’ll need to trust that the crew that keeps her aloft really does consider her World’s Best Boss.

The real test of Pink’s nerve is that she has enlisted two of the most powerful female vocalists on the planet, Brandi Carlile and Pat Benatar , as her direct support acts for the “Summer Carnival” stadium tour (the North American part of which begins July 24 in Toronto and ends Oct. 9 in Phoenix, following a European leg in June). Pink and Carlile go back — they wrote a still-unrecorded song together 15 years ago. “The first time I heard her sing, I was in my car and it was when her voice cracks during ‘The Story,’ and I had to pull my car over,” Pink remembers. She met Benatar at October’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ceremony, where Pink and Carlile were saluting Dolly Parton by singing “Coat of Many Colors” while Benatar and husband Neil Giraldo were getting their own honors. Pink figured, and had it confirmed, that Benatar had to be classically trained to be singing like that at 70. “I ran up to her that night and was like, ‘Can we be best friends?’”
“I feel like I’ve found three voices in 43 years,” she declares. “My first voice was opera, because I used to sing ‘Phantom of the Opera’ and ‘Les Miz’ — things like that. Then my second voice was R&B-ish, but I sounded like Alvin from Alvin and the Chipmunks. But I was also smoking, and I was steadily getting raspier and raspier, which is why Janis was an easy sell for me. I loved it, but then it started going too far. Billy Mann, my friend and songwriting partner, sat me down and said, ‘I think you’re at the point now where you have to ask yourself, “Am I a singer or a smoker?”’ Hmm. ‘Shoot. I think you’re right.’ So I quit.” This happened around 2010, when she was pregnant with her first child, Willow, now 12. “And then I found this grown-up voice that I have and got two octaves back. My voice has never been stronger. But I don’t have that rasp anymore, and I miss that — I wish I could have kept a little bit of it. But,” she adds with a shrug and a sip, “I chose life instead.”
Making the conscious choice to go on is a big theme of “Trustfall.” Not entirely ironically, it starts with a ballad about death and the afterlife, “When I Get There,” prompted somewhat by her father’s death in August 2021, as well as mortal thoughts that arose when both she and her son contracted bad cases of COVID. Starting the album off with a non-banger was as conscious a choice as everything Pink does.
“I feel like we’re all in this constant state of overwhelm , and so we put our feelings away just so that we can get through a day. I wanted to find a way back to the truth and the authentic feelings. So opening the album with that, instead of like, ‘Hey, let’s ease into each other,’ it’s like, ‘No, no. Sit down. I want to talk to you. We’re gonna clear all the bullshit away and have a conversation .’ That’s how I am as a person. If you ask me how I am, how much time do you have? So ‘When I Get There’ as an album-opener was my way of saying, ‘Let’s talk about real stuff.’””
It’s easy to get the sense that for many fans, it’s “ me and Pink against the world” — whether that has to do with her support of the LGBTQ community or advocacy for older women or disaffected-youth friendliness. “A lot of my friends have teenagers — I do not yet, thank God — and they all have just debilitating anxiety.” She describes playing the new song “Turbulence,” which describes life in terms of an extended panic attack, for her daughter’s friends, “and, like, five of them were just sobbing.” The findings showing that more young people than ever describe themselves as dealing with crippling depression or anxiety disturbs her — “I don’t know where we’re going with this” — even if it’s not surprising to a woman who’s included the word “trauma” in album titles and written existentially brooding anthems like “What About Us.”
She leans forward to deliver all of us existentially challenged grown-ups a pep talk, like she did with her daughter’s friends that day she played them “Turbulence.” “Just let it go, man,” Pink advises. “Just be a dolphin and let that go right off your back. We have to have joy too. We have to laugh. We have to love. We have to cuddle. We have to suck the marrow out of the bones of life, because we’re still here. The wildfires haven’t come yet.” Spoken like a true Santa Barbara-area resident, invoking the joy of sea mammals and the prospect of everything going up in flames all in the same breath.
Pink may be known for her feats of derring-do, but there’s no fearlessness like withstanding the slings and arrows of being a reasonably outspoken public figure. Twenty-three years into a career, does she have the satisfaction of thinking that, by now, people get her?
“I definitely don’t think a large far-right contingent gets me at all. and they don’t want to and they’re never going to, because I represent so many things that they hate. And I think people that only listen to the singles don’t get me, because there’s so much else. When I meet people, they’re like, ‘God, you’re not scary.’ And I’m like, ‘Well, don’t tell anyone. That’s my cover, man.’ But I’ve kind of stopped caring a little bit. I’m sad about people thinking that being an opinionated woman is a bad thing. I’m sad. That deeply saddens me. But I’ve stopped trying to explain it.” It’s not something she’s only ever experienced from afar. “I think it sticks with me because my husband told me, when we met, ‘he was like, “’I thought you were just like this angry man-eater.’ And I was like, ‘I am . But, I’m also this.'” Carey Hart got over it; not everyone did. “The things people say to me online, it’s insane,” she says.
The most personal song on the new record may be the harrowing ballad “Lost Cause,” sung from the point of view of a woman who just wants to be told she isn’t a piece of shit. Written by Stephen Wrabel, Sam de Jong and Sam Romans, it resonated with Pink because of a conversation she had with Hart. “He came to me a long time ago — at a good moment, when we weren’t arguing — and said, ‘Hey, when we argue and you say really mean things, it hurts me and I really need you to stop.’ I was blown away, like, ‘Whoa, what a beautiful thing to do, Carey, to bring that up at a time where everything’s going well.’ Time moves on and you both get mean after a while, and the world is mean,” she avows, attesting that charity needs to begin at home.
“And,” she adds, further explicating the theme of “Lost Cause,” “I’m like, ‘You can call me a loser, but just don’t tell me I’m unredeemable.’ Everybody is redeemable. Unless they’re gone — unless they’re in the dirt. I don’t believe old dogs can’t learn new tricks.”

Police say a tour bus being used by the pop singer Pink caught fire on its way from Munich to Berlin, but there were no injuries. Bavarian police say a particle filter in the exhaust system caught fire at about 5 a.m. Monday (June 7) due to a technical defect. They say the driver reacted quickly and got the bus to the side of the highway and put the fire out with an extinguisher before authorities arrived at the scene. Police say eight musicians were aboard but Pink herself was not. The band played a concert in Munich on Saturday and was on its way to Berlin for a show Tuesday night. The musicians were able to continue on their journey on a replacement bus.

When I first bought the tickets they seemed expensive but having attended the show I think they were worth every penny.
I felt that Pink is an amazing entertainer who engaged with the audience and also showed appreciation for the other performers. Not only this but she has ( as evidenced by the video clips) done lots of ambassadorship things for worthy causes.
I felt she can across as a very warm caring person of incredible talent and I enjoyed the whole event.
Would definitely like to see her in concert again. Truly spectacular.

I had seen P!nk live at Madison Square Garden in NYC once before when she had started using the silks onstage, so I knew her shows were impressive. But nothing prepared me for last night. Not only does she entertain with a well-choreographed show, she’s humble, she’s funny and the show brims with passion. This is a well-rehearsed production, yet she still makes it feel spontaneous. There are lots of fast rock-out songs with pyrotechnics but also quiet moments where her voice shines during the ballads. Highlights for me were the nod to Gwen Stefani/No Doubt blend of Just a Girl with her own Funhouse and her flying all around the arena like Tinkerbell during So What. What a phenomenal show. What a phenomenal performance. P!nk sure gives you your money’s worth. I tend to avoid big stadium concerts, but for P!nk I’ll gladly make an exception. Go see her! You won’t regret it.
This tour date was my second time seeing P!NK on the Beautiful Trauma tour. (I got to travel to Charlottesville for a date on the tour in 2019.) When the Charlotte, NC, date was announced for this March, I had hoped to be able to go because it's near my birthday this time. This date was just as awesome. (I have listened to P!NK's albums since her first album was released when I was an assistant manager in a music store.)
P!NK is personal, on point, and gives audience participation a new meaning. She's working hard to keep her body prepped to do everything she does on stage, and as a female in her age group as well as a lifelong singer and musician's spouse, I applaud her voice and her choices in everything she puts together for her concert tour dates. If you were hesitant to go to the tour date because you hear her music and do not go to concerts, then I recommend you try to go to at least one tour date. You will not be disappointed!

What Time Does Pink Go On Stage For Her 2023 Tour?
Pink ‘s Summer Carnival Tour has been a whirlwind. The singer has been handed a wheel of cheese by an audience member, and the ashes of a death mother from another. She notably paused her show in Austria for an important reason: “I’m gonna eat my damn chocolate,” she told the crowd. “I can’t concentrate.”
When it comes to big concerts, it’s good to know set times so as to get to the venue on time, find parking, and head to your seats. According to sources like National World and The Pink News , the “Just Give Me A Reason” singer typically hits the stage at 8:50 sharp, with curfew at 11.
At her gig in Cincinnati, Ohio, she paid tribute to Sinéad O’Connor following her tragic passing. “When I was a little girl, my mom grew up in Atlantic City and I used to go down to the Ocean City Boardwalk with my $10 and I would make a demo tape,” Pink told the crowd. “I would make a little cassette tape and imagine it was my demo for the record company.”
She continued, “And it would always be either ‘Greatest Love of All’ by Whitney Houston or ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’ by Sinéad O’Connor. So in honor of Sinéad, and in honor of my very, very talented friend Brandi Carlile I asked her if she would come out here and sing this song with me.”

See inside Dolly Parton’s tour bus designed by the country star herself
After working "9 to 5," where does legendary singer Dolly Parton rest up? Her tour bus, of course.
Now, thanks to Dollywood, you can book that tour bus (which is called "Gyspy Wagon" by Parton) yourself!
Dollywood recently released photos of the "Gypsy Wagon" to promote a special accommodation the park is offering: up to two guests can stay at least two nights in "Dolly Suite 1986" (aka on the tour bus). The cost to do so begins at $10,000.
Aside from being a wildly successful country music icon, Parton also is a "free-spirited traveler," according to a Dollywood press release — so it's no wonder her tour bus is decorated akin to her personality.
According to that press release, Parton used this tour bus from 2008 to 2022, marking 13 years of traveling across the country. In that stretch of time, she did the most traveling on her 2016 "Pure & Simple" tour, where she visited more than 60 cities in North America.
While the outside of the bus may appear just as an average tour bus (you know, aside from the big, pink "Dolly" sticker), the interior proves to be a wonderfully-curated collection of items and furniture that are so Dolly Parton.
Upon entering, guests are greeted by a sitting area that exudes '70s vibes, complete with antique accessories like a vintage telephone. Don't worry though, there is a modern television!
According to Dollywood, Parton specifically requested the hand-painted murals that adorn the walls in this room.
"These unique paintings of wayfaring wanderers, wagons and crystal balls paint the interpretation of life on the road for the singer," the press release reads.
Then, enter the bedroom, which is by far the most quintessential "Dolly" room you'll probably ever see.
The bedroom boasts lots of jewel-toned accents, such as hot pink and blue wall designs — even the bedding, complete with fuzzy pink pillows, is a signature hot pink.
Her makeup vanity is also on display, complete with a makeup mirror, flowers in a vase and a perfectly-picked pink and purple vanity chair to match.
Open the closet door and guests can get a glimpse of some outfits and accessories the singer has worn.
And the standout detail of the bedroom: Parton's wig cabinet. Parton herself said that her wigs have sort of become her "trademark" over the years, so it's no wonder the singer wants some of them on display for her guests.
Parton's home away from home includes a plethora of design details that perfectly encapsulate who she is. Our only question now is: When do we get to stay?

A Tour of the Tour Buses
“Can’t wait to get on the road again,” goes the Willie Nelson song. Here’s how two bands — one in a van, one in an, er, bigger conveyance — go from gig to gig.
By Steven Kurutz
Summer is high season for concert tours. Bands travel to Instagram fests like Bonnaroo, in the wilds of Tennessee, and old standbys like Glastonbury, in England. And of course there’s always a sweaty bar to play.
There are myriad options for getting there (Uber, Mom and Dad’s Su baru, road trip!), but how do the stars make it? In grand style, apparently, or at least in their own style.
Here, two bands talk about life on the road and the pleasures of a home that travels with you.
Screaming Females are an indie rock band from New Brunswick, N.J., who have toured all over the world (they recently returned from Australia and New Zealand). This month, the band is back on the road in North America , driving themselves to gigs in their van.
“If you’re in a van like our van, you live in it. It becomes your house. We spend hours traveling. We don’t tend to sleep in it. That’s not to say that we haven’t. With any object you share with other people, you talk about the minutiae of how it functions.” Marissa Paternoster, singer and guitarist
“It’s a Ford Transit 150. We got the shortest length and medium-height model. We play a lot of gigs in bars and in cities. If you come through with a van and a trailer, which a lot of bands on our level tour with, it can be difficult to find parking. The benefit of the smallest length is it’s easier to park and steers like an S.U.V. The medium height meant we had enough room to stack a bunch of T-shirts to sell.” Jarrett Dougherty, drummer
“We usually call it the Van. Which is not the most creative name. Jokingly, we call it the Whip when we open up our bar, which just means you sit in the back and drink.” Marissa Paternoster
“Over the last two or three years, we’ve put 100,000 miles on it across North America. It’s been to every state other than Hawaii and Alaska, and it’s been to D.C., and probably five provinces in Canada.” Jarrett Dougherty
“If you spend 12 hours sitting in the same car, I think it comes pretty naturally to tinker with what’s back there. In the old van, we collaged the entire ceiling. I decorated our new van a lot to make it a little more cozy. Cardboard is very plentiful. If we’re lucky and have a good week we’ll sell a whole box of T-shirts.” Marissa Paternoster
“I put in one of those wire shelves that you buy at Home Depot. I affixed it to the cage in the back so we don’t squish all of our records. Whenever we’re loading up the van at the end of night, that gets the most comments. ‘Oh, you’ve got a shelf in there.’” Mike Abbate, bass player
“I don’t think that any of us dream of the next level up because it doesn’t seem viable to travel in anything fancier than our current fancy van. It’s a small operation — we’re playing in small rock clubs every night.” Mike Abbate
“It would be embarrassing to pull up in a big coach bus. We’re very grateful to have such a nice van. We’ve definitely ridden in some vehicles that were spotty. Our first van broke down near Las Cruces. It was very, very hot. There were a bunch of snakes. Big ups to our van. It’s the right size for the job, you know.” Marissa Paternoster
Old Dominion are a country band from Nashville. Their last album, “Happy Endings,” debuted at No. 1 on the country charts; its commercial success has allowed five members and their entourage to tour in a customized coach bus this summer.
“We did spend 10 years in those vans. We went through three of them. That first bus is usually just a rental, you get whatever you get. As you get more consistent, you get to pick one that you get to live with for a year. After that, if you can afford it, you pick a coach company. You tell them, ‘We’re doing a two-year lease, but we’ll build it from the ground up.’ The color choices on the curtains, the flooring choice, the couch cushion choice — we picked them to make it feel like home.” Geoff Sprung, bass player
“When we first got our bus, we pulled the van up that we’d been traveling in for years. Got into the bus, rolling down the road, cranking music. Our tour manager came back and said, ‘Guys, there’s 40 feet of bus. You all don’t have to sit crammed around the same couch.’” Matthew Ramsey, singer
“Sometimes those custom things happen out of boredom: ‘Hey, we should get some AstroTurf.’ Then it’d be football season: ‘Man, if we just had a TV out here, it’d be cool.’ We just suggest something and our management makes it happen.” Matthew Ramsey
“You have to be careful what you say out loud. We did our first big headlining tour last year or two years ago. Someone said, ‘It’d be cool if we could stand in our greenroom and spin some vinyl.’ Our production team had it custom built. None of those luxury items are essential — we lived for years without any of that stuff. But at festivals, your bus, that’s the extent of your comfort area. When you can hang outside and watch TV out there, it’s like another living room. It expands the living space.” Geoff Sprung
“We have moments where we fly sometimes. One of the best things is when the bus can pick us up at the airport. Because it’s like your home coming to pick you up. Our beds are there, all the food we like is there. I definitely love good coffee so I’ve turned everybody into coffee snobs. That happened in the van. I started bringing a French press in the van.” Matthew Ramsey
“The same five guys have been in a van and now this bus for over a decade. You’re in those close quarters together a couple hundred days a year. Because of that environment, I had to learn everyone’s idiosyncrasies and quirks because you either celebrate it or it drives you crazy.” Geoff Sprung
“Living in Nashville when we were struggling, there’s buses everywhere. You see them all the time. It is this benchmark that you shoot for. Now we’re traveling with four buses, with our crew. We’ve crossed into a point where it’s ridiculous and mind-blowing.” Matthew Ramsey
