The route allows you to trek to Rajgad Fort and then back on the same day, making it a p erfect weekend getaway  for active people.

In the monsoon, you can expect slippery and muddy paths. The perfect time to go is between October & February. Fort Garrison is an  excellent spot for camping , and you’ll need to plan your trip for this period.

Rajgad Fort is located inside the Sahyadri mountain range, approximately 60 kilometers from Pune. The fort is situated on the crest of a mountain at an elevation of 1,400 meters (4,593 feet). It is possible to reach by taxi, bus, or personal vehicle. The most popular trail towards the fort starts from Gunjavane village.

Public Transport:

From Mumbai, one can take a bus/train to Pune. From the Swargate Pune bus stand, many buses leave for Gunjavane village; you can board the bus and reach the base village in 2-2.5 hours.

Private Transport:

Trekking driving from  Mumbai  can take the Mumba-Pune Expressway and reach Kothrud; from there, go towards Nasrapur taking the road towards Margasani, approximately 7 kms from Gunjavane village.

From  Pune , the  distance  is approximately  60 kms , and it will take around  1.5 – 2 hours  to reach the base village.  Get Directions .

What Is The Trek Route & Difficulty Level?

rajgad trek camping

The trek begins from Gunjavane village and finishes at the Rajgad Fort, which is more than 1400m above sea level. This trek is ideal for those who are beginners & intermediates.

The trekkers have the option of choosing from  two distinct routes . The first one  (the most accessible)  starts at Pali village and takes you through a muddy field. From there, the hike takes you through wildflowers and forests.

The  most popular route  starts in  Gunjavane village and goes towards the Chor Darwaza.

The trek  distance  is about  5 kms one way  and can take around  3-3.5 hours  to reach the  top of the fort .

We recommend this trek in 2 days and camping overnight at the fort and enjoying the night sky.

The hike from this route is challenging, but it is rewarding. When you are at the summit, you’ll be able to observe the fort and the natural vegetation surrounding it. If you’re in the mood to do so, you could hike down and return the next day. If you start with a good breakfast, you’ll have the entire time to discover the region.

The trail is well laid out from the base village, and the chances of getting lost are significantly less. After 30-40 mins, you will reach the plateau, where you can get a clear view of the Rajgad fort. This section is mostly a wide and muddy trail.

From the plateau, you start a gradual ascent toward the fort. The distance is around 2-2.5 kms, and once you reach the top, it will take you to the entrance of the Chor Darwaza. This patch will take around 2.5 hours to reach as the entire stretch is a gradual climb to the entrance of the Chor Darwaza.

Rajgad Fort Details

The fort is divided into four significant sections: Padmavati Machi, Suvela Machi, Sanjeevani Machi, and Balekilla (the highest point of the fort).

It will take the remaining part of your day to explore the entire top of the fort; hence, camp overnight at the fort, Padmavati Machi being the best location to camp.

Padmavati Machi:  This part of the fort was the military/residential area. There is a temple, a garrison & a lake here.

Suvela Machi:  The most picturesque part of the fort, Suvela Machi, is a long, narrow strip from which you can get amazing views of the surrounding regions. There is also a Nedhe (naturally formed hole in the wall).

Ballekilla:  This is a small fort on top of the fort and the highest point. The entrance to this fort is called Mahadarwaza. From Ballekilla, you can get stunning views of the Torna, Tung, Sinhagad, and many other forts in the region.

Sanjeevani Machi:  It is 2.5 km long and has a double-fortified wall & an architectural marvel.

  • Some FAQS about RAJGAD Trek

Best Season to visit : The best season to visit Rajgad is during the monsoon and the winter season. Trekking feels fantastic during the monsoons but trekkers should take precautions as the trek route gets very slippery. Winter season is ideal for camping at the fort. The temperatures get very low during the winters and a bonfire based campsite is a heavenly experience.

Routes : The way to Rajgad is via NASRAPUR Phata which is approximately 15 - 20 Kms from Katraj Tunnel and just 5kms from the Mcdonalds/Dominos outlet after the first toll on NH4. Reach NASRAPUR by NH 4, this is approx 35 kms from Pune Station. From Nasrapur travel westwards to reach the following base villages…..there are multiple base villages for this fort. I have mentioned 3 routes here [Gunjawane, Bhor and Pali] From Gunjawane the trek is a little bit tough as it leads to the Chor Darwaja and it takes almost 2 1/2 hours for trekking with 4-5 breaks during the trek. Inexperienced trekkers should go via Pali village as this trek is not that difficult as compared to the trek via Gunjawane. The Pali route will take you to the main door of the fort. Trek from Pali village is comparitively easy. So if you have elderly people or kids in your group, we recommend that you take this route. There's a way which goes to Torna along the ridges of Sahyadri Mountains from Rajgad. For the Bhor Route,  you will have to head towards bhor from NH4 and then from Bhor to Bhutonde. From Bhutonde village, a 3 -4 hours trek will take you to the Alu Darwaja of Rajgad. This route is not very popular, but if you want to experience something different, then, you should definitely try this.

Difficulty Level and Other useful tips:

Difficulty level is moderate. It takes approximately 2 1/2 hours to reach to the top via Pali and 3 1/2 hours via Gunjawane. The highest point of Rajgad is Balekilla which is a fort on Rajgad. Take plenty of water and some energy drinks with you as the trek is a bit tiring.

Food and Water on the fort:  It is always recommended that you carry your own drinking water from home. Atleast 3 litres per person for one day treks For food, the villagers on weekends do serve Poha, BHaji and Zhunka Bhakari at Padmavati temple on the fort. But again, do take some snacks packed from home.

Camping Info: Rajgad fort is an ideal fort for camping. There is plenty to be explored on the fort which cannot be done in a one day trek, hence halting overnight and then exploring the fort the next morning is always recommended. There are 2 temples [Padmavati and a smaller temple] which you can use for camping during night if you do not have tents. Security is not a major concern as both the temples have working doors. But, if you have females in your group, I would recommend that you take at-least 7-10 males in your group. You can also carry your own tents for camping. There are plenty of nice spots where you can pitch your tents for the night.

Accomodation Capacity: Padmavati Temple : 50 Smaller temple: 6-7

Check this link for places where you can buy good tents in pune.

You don't need to carry Firewood for camping on this fort coz the Villagers sell firewood for Rs.50 and Rs.100 on the fort itself. Rs.100 Firewood should keep you warm the whole night.

What to see on the fort:

  • SANJEEVANI MACHEE
  • PADMAVATEE MACHEE - This machee is one of the important structures on the fort. During the Maratha rule, this machee was used as a stronghold to protect the fort.
  • PADMAVATI TEMPLE - This is the temple of goddess Padmavati. Many trekkers use this as an shelter for overnight treks.
  • RAMESHWARAM TEMPLE - This is another small temple which lies in the frontyard of Padmavati temple. It is a temple of lord Shiva. This again can be used for night stays and can accomodate 5-6 persons.
  • ALU DARWAJA - During old days, this door was used to go to Torna fort. The structure of the door is in ruins now.
  • PALI DARWAJA - This is the main door of Rajgad which is still intact. Even the surrounding structures are still intact. Trekkers who take the Pali route have to enter the fort via this door.
  • SUVELA MACHEE
  • VIEW OF TORNA AND SINHAGAD

The terrain is not too difficult to climb and provides you with just the right amount of thrill as you climb to a really important fort for the state of Maharashtra.

Rajgad fort is known for its majesty and architectural marvel. It also has rich Maratha history attached to it, making the fort stand out among other forts in the western ghats. At an altitude of 4,514 ft above sea level, the Rajgad fort is located near Pune. The fort was initially built on the Murumb Devacha Dongar hill with a diameter of 40 km. The majestic size of the fort made it difficult for anyone to lay siege and capture it. However, the Marathas were successful in capturing the fort by making strategic decisions under the leadership of Chbhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

Rajgad remained the capital of the Maratha empire and the residence of Shivaji Maharaj for a period of 26 long years, following which he shifted to Raigad. The fact that it was his residence is one of the reasons why the fort was built beautifully and with high precision.

The long stay by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj made the Rajgad fort the center of various historic events, including the birth of his son Rajaram 1 and the death of his queen Saibai. Moreover, Rajgad was one of the 17 forts that Shivaji Maharaj kept while signing the Treaty of Purandar in 1665.

The thrilling Rajgad fort trek will provide you with a picturesque view of the Sahyadri range and the majestic for itself. Nature and history enthusiast in you is bound to be pleased and mesmerized by this highly memorable trek . Along with the fort, you will also witness the fortification of three plateaus – Padmavati Machi, Suvela Machi, and Sanjivani Machi. These plateaus add to the architectural beauty of the fort. You will also encounter many water cisterns, temples, and ashrams along the way as you climb up to the Rajgad fort.

Once you reach the top, you can enjoy the view of surrounding forts, including Torna, Raigad, Lingana, Sinhagad, Purandar, Vajragad, Rohida, Mangalgad, Raireshwar, and the Mahabaleshwar mountain range. The high altitude of the fort provides you with an uninterrupted view of the surrounding hills and reservoirs, adding to the overall beauty of the trek. Some of the other notable marvels that can be witnessed from the top include Pratapgad, Makarandgad, Varandha ghat, Gopya ghat, Madhe ghat, Visapur, Tung, Raigad, Lohgad, and Tikona.

Overall, the beauty of the Rajgad fort trek lies in the thrilling journey to the top and admiring the majestic architecture of the same.

Rajgad fort, As the name, suggests "King of forts". It is to the south-west 40 Kms from Pune. It boasts the highest number of days stayed by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj on any fort. He spent almost 25 - 30 years approx. Rajgad is famous for its construction. The fort can be divided into four different parts based on geographical terrain and fortification. There are three sub-plateaux (Machee) namely PadmavatiMachee, Suvela Machee, and SanjevaniMachee, and at the center is the Ballekilla. PadmavatiMachee (north end): This machee is the site of Padmavati Temple, Padmavati Lake, ChorDarwaja, PaliDarwaja, GunjavaneDarwaja, DaruKothar (storage of arms and ammunition), Diwankhana, Rajwada (ruins), Ghod Tale (Horse Lake), Sadar (office) and Dhalkathi (flag hoisting place). Summary:- Type: Hill Fort Height: 4182 feet. Base Village: Gunjavne More about Rajgad:- Sanjeevani Machee (southwest/west end): This huge, beautiful and royally constructed machee faces west and has a three-stepped (layered) fortified structure. Each of the lower levels is separated from the higher one by a fortified bastion with a gate that could be defended independently. The lowest level is beautifully fortified by double curtain walls (chilkhathi) separated by a deep trench, on average 12 feet across. One can walk between these walls. The outer wall has openings to let soldiers out for a sudden attack.  SuvelaMachee (southeast): This is another grand machee facing east with lots of secret routes and doorways. This one is a double-stepped fortified machee with the steps separated by a beautiful bastioned doorway. At the end of the first step, a hole cuts across the rock; one can sit in this hole (nedhe). The final (lowest) step like SanjeevaniMachee has a double curtain wall. To the south side of this machee one can see a beautiful triangular bastion called Kaleswariburuz having an escape door near it. The home of the renowned military leader TanajiMalusare was in this machee. Bale Killa (center): This is the highest part of the fort which has remains of palaces, water cisterns, and caves. It has a beautiful entrance door called Mahadarwaja. One can view the whole fort and the vast surrounding expanse.

Rajgad Torna Fort – Trek N Camping Madness | Ep. 2

Photo of Wandering Jatin

Recap: In the last episode , I shared our trekking and camping experiences at Rajgad Fort where one of my friends had a sip of Kerosene as water is too mainstream!

The Morning and Turn of Events

After the most comfortable night camping, the unzipping of the tents flooded our tents with the Sunlight and our faces with happiness . My suggestion to pitch the tents facing East worked perfectly. The Sun had worked its way from the deep valley below and now provided us the soft heat while the chilly winds still gave the goosebumps.

Majority had ditched the idea of trekking to Torna Fort the previous night only and hence, we took our time in waking up and walking around and enjoying the views. But then, Ayush expressed a desire to continue per the original plan, and trek up till Torna Fort . We were a little late to start for Torna then but the adrenaline took over. Knowing that the trek down from Rajgad was comparatively simpler, I confirmed from the group, handed leadership to other experienced fellows, and decided to go ahead towards Torna.

Balle Killa trek and prepping for the Mission Impossible

While others were still lazying around and engaging in tummy cleansing rituals, Ayush and I left for the Baalle Killa, the highest point at Rajgad Fort. As it was the only 2 of us now, we conquered the highest point in a (possibly) record time ! The narrow, curved and steep steps were challenging but inviting too.

After soaking in the beautiful views of the valley from up there, and being fascinated by the markets which used to be set-up up there, we trekked down to leave for Torna. I applied some cotton on my blistered feet from the previous day, arranged some water, minimal supplies and continued.

Trek the Torna

We had started much later compared to the ideal time, and made Godspeed after leaving the group. Similar sized and much lighter , the two of us were almost running the trail towards Torna for an hour and half after which too the pace was maintained.

Unaware of the trail and lack of a single human being on the trail, we both were following the route map the caretaker had given us. We picked up trails by guesswork at times and at other times, made a trail when there were none. Few hours later, we were on top of mountains, walking on the ridges, going up and down the mountain tops one by one. When the distance that was yet to be covered haunted us, we impressed ourselves by noting the distance we had covered in a few hours. We had lost the count of mountain ridges we had crossed, and whenever we pondered over the daunting task ahead of us, the thought of missing our train that was to leave in the evening restored us to sanity. But let me tell you, up there, all alone, standing on top of the mountains, and walking on the ridges, it was a calm yet thrilling experience.

After almost 6 hours of ridge walking, we came across a mountain which went vertically upwards in front of us. Cameras packed inside the bags, we trekked up some of the most difficult patches which make me shiver even now. Alone somewhere, the 2 of us gave confidence to each other when the loose ground gave in below us and ‘ almost ‘ threatened our lives! From somewhere came a guy and guided us for the last stretch into Torna fort, where the hallucinated me crashed for a while!

Torna Fort was the first fort captured by Shivaji and provided for some great splendid views of Sahyadris . Rajgad fort was visible from here and must have exposed the entire trail of the enemies, once upon a time, if they had ever tried. If you’re trekking up here from Rajgad, start early and estimate 6 – 7 hours of trekking, and wear shoes with good grips (which are not new!).

With the only aim of catching the train, we ran down the entire trail asking the students out on their school trip to make way. I had removed only one shoe when Ayush got us into a crowded cab to some place. Once out of the cab, I had still not removed the other shoe when we ran to catch a bus! We ditched the bus once it entered the city traffic to catch an auto which dropped us in front of an under bridge saying, “the other side of this is located what you seek – platform no. One” , to which we ran shouting, to be given way and boarded the train to finally join our folks! Hahh!

The company, friends and the trail were the highlights of this amazing trek to the royal forts of the past. That night I slept on my berth with only one thought:

Who came up with the idea of building those forts up there anyway?

Learning Experience

  • We are an Adventure Learning Organisation first.
  • We want you to not just complete a trek safely but also pick up some basic trekking knowledge and skills along the way.
  • To achieve this we have integrated learning modules into our itineraries.
  • These modules will help you build the necessary skills to progress from trekking to mountaineering over time.

Loyality Programs

Our community is an integral part of us and we take pride in our trekkers and climbers. When you complete at least three days on any trek or expedition with us, you become eligible for our membership and referral programs.

  • Currently we have three levels:
  • Basic Membership
  • Summiteer Membership
  • Leader Membership

Personalized Attention

  • Our group sizes on treks don’t exceed 15 members in order to maintain a healthy Participants : Leader Ratio of 8:1.
  • Over time we have found this number to be optimum when it comes to ensuring personalised attention to every member of our group.
  • On mountaineering expeditions this number is even smaller. Our group sizes are capped at 12 members ensuring a Participants : HAP Ratio of 2:1.

Best Expedition Leaders

  • Our Expedition leaders are advanced mountaineering course qualified, specially trained in rescue procedures from NIM and certified first-aid responders.
  • Even our local guides are certified first-aid responders.

Eco-friendly Practices

  • Group sizes are capped at 15 people.
  • Batch sizes are capped at 250 people per trail per season.
  • We follow a rolling campsite model.
  • We are constantly exploring and introducing new trails to reduce the burden on existing ones.

For us, a successful summit is not about reaching the highest point of a mountain but about making it safely back to base.

  • To ensure this:
  • Every region of ours is mapped with an emergency evacuation plan.
