Green Route Trek – Nature Walk at Its Best

October 20, 2017 by madur

Green Route trekking is like taking a nature-walk at its best! Where exactly is this route? Well, the Green Route trek is a mesmerizing trail in the midst of the Western Ghats. To be precise it lies along the Sakleshpur railway line that runs here from Mangalore.

The serene nature walk along the virgin Ghats is an experience to remember. Although many of them claim that the views from the train journey are equally magnificent, only a trekker knows how real and surreal it is to trek in the lap of nature. The experience is different altogether.

About the Green Route Trek

The Green Route trek begins near the village-side of Sakleshpur . It runs up to the Kukke Subramanya station. Waterfalls, mountains, valleys, tunnels, bridges and a blanket of cozy greens is what you’re going to witness all along the Green Route. Entering tunnels or crossing the rail line in some stretches is banned. Thus, map out your route before heading out.

Green Route trek, no doubt, gives you a complete view of the crests and troughs of the Western Ghats. Home to some wild elephants and beautiful flora, you can spot many other creatures along the way. Avoid trekking the Green Route during monsoons as the trails can get really slippery, waterlogged and difficult to tread. Moreover, you will encounter a bunch of leeches while trekking during the wet season.

Things to Do Enroute Green Route Trek

Reserve Forest

There is nothing better than completing your Green Route trek by halting at a reserve forest. Take a detour to some of the most spectacular rainforests of the Ghats, i.e. the Bisle Reserve Forest. The flora and fauna here is richer than the rest. Dense vegetation and gorgeous valleys line the strip of the forest reserve.

This area has the railway station. Many trekkers choose to start from Donigal and end their trek here. It serves as good pit-stop or halt for your return journey. This region is famed for its water activities. It is recommended to spend an extra day here.

It houses the famous Jain learning centre. Jains from all over India flock in large numbers here annually. Besides that, it has the famous Thousand Pillars Temple and Chowter Palace. All these features of interest make it a good place to stop and go.

Sakleshpur Green Route Railway Trek

sakleshpur green route trek

It is one of India’s most iconic railway treks. It is one of the most scenic treks in the Western Ghats of Karnataka. Some people call it the world’s extreme railroad. Some refer to it as trekking paradise. Some have even dubbed this trek the ‘Green Route’. Whatever its name might be, this mountain railway route is nothing short of a wonder. I am talking about the rail route from Sakleshpur to Kukke Subramanya that falls on the segment between Bangalore and Mangalore. Spanning 52 km in the mountain ranges of the Western Ghats, this mountain rail route from Sakleshpur to Kukke Subramanya via Yedekumeri is made up of 57 tunnels, 109 bridges, and an umpteen number of rivers and waterfalls. But, that is not it. Some of these tunnels and bridges are as long as 0.75 km and some of these bridges are 200 meters high. Mind-boggling, right? Well, I forgot to mention the pristine forests that cover this entire belt and whose dense green cover gives this rail route its name, ‘The Green Route’. 15 years ago, I was privileged to have trekked on this iconic rail route. At that time, the railway tracks were undergoing modernization and hence the trains were not plying. It was a glorious, action-packed, and nerve-wracking 2 days for the group, but all of us had a thrilling time despite the nagging pain in our calf muscles (due to walking on rail sleepers for 2 days). Today, this iconic railway trek is banned as trains ply on this route regularly. But, there is a way to catch a glimpse of its beauty, albeit through an alternate overland route. This overland route is a combination of lush Malnad countryside, some off-roading (either by 4 wheel drive or two-wheeler), and a bit of jungle trekking. On the road between Hongadahalla and Yedekumeri falls a dirt track that leads to the famous Yedekumeri bridge. This steep and narrow dirt track crosses plantations and forests to the railway track between tunnels 11 and 12. The tallest bridge of this rail route is here. Things are very different today compared to 15 years ago when there were no support and handrails. Today, there are platforms and handrails for safety. These platforms allow you to walk on the bridge easily while soaking in the lush green expanse and the roar of the water below.

sakleshpur green route trek

How to reach here:

If arriving from Sakleshpur side…

Take Shirdi ghat road, turn left at Marenahalli, head straight on this rural highway crossing check dams, and before turning left towards Hongadahalla, turn right towards Yedekumeri. About a kilometer further, there is a steep dirt track towards your right. Take this dirt track, ascend rapidly, keep to your left and stay on the steep descent till you reach the Yedekumeri bridge and the railway track. This location is right between tunnels 11 and 12 on the Donegal – Subramanya railway line. At Kudrasthe junction, take the road that leads to Sakleshpur via Bachalli. At Bachalli, turn left and head towards Athihally. At Athihally, turn right and continue towards Hongadahalla. At Hongadahalla, turn right and head straight towards Yedekumeri village. Ignore the road that turns right towards Marenahalli and Shirdi ghat highway. About 1 km after this diversion, turn right towards the steep dirt track. Take this dirt track, ascend rapidly, keep to your left and stay on the steep descent till you reach the Yedekumeri bridge and the railway track. This location is right between tunnels 11 and 12 on the Donegal – Subramanya railway line. Usually, four-wheel drives with experienced drivers can take you to the track, but sometimes that might not be possible due to landslides. Two-wheelers with good tires, brakes, and a good rider can also cover a lot of the distance if there are no landslides. No other vehicle will be able to go on this road. Do keep in mind that there is no place to reverse your vehicle till you reach the final parking area, so don’t be over-enthusiastic and try to test the waters. The track is hardcore dirt terrain even for proper off-roaders. The rest of the way can easily trek.

Time is taken for the trek (if the vehicle is parked at Yedekumeri dirt track turning):  The return journey should take you about 3 hours, including some time for relaxing and photography. The duration could be longer if you spend more time on the railway bridge. To reach Tunnel 1 and the hidden waterfall behind it , head further on the Hongadahalla – Marenahalli road till you see the railway overbridge. Park your vehicle here and you will see Tunnel 1 to your left.

Best season to visit:

All year-round, but for its vibrant best, opt for the monsoon season.

Key things to keep in mind for this trek:

1) Railway treks where trains ply actively are banned in India. Hence, please use your discretion and common sense while embarking anywhere close to these railway tracks. 2) During the monsoons, leeches can be found here in plenty. Do prepare yourself for them.

3) Do carry a flashlight with you if you are planning on entering a tunnel. 4) Landslides are common here during the monsoon season. Do plan your itinerary accordingly.\

5) Apart from BSNL, which is available in patches, there is no cell phone connectivity on this route. Hence, do keep someone appraised of your plan well in advance. 6) No food or water can be found on this trek. Do carry rations as needed.

7) People with a fear of heights, please use your discretion before getting on top of the Yedekumeri bridge.

8) Elephants and other wild animals can be seen on this trail during the early hours of the morning and the late hours of the evening. It is alright to explore during the day.

Where to stay:

If local homestays are your thing, there are a ton of options available nearby in villages such as Hongdhalla, Athihally, and Vanagoor. If you prefer a bit of luxury, stay at Somwarpet or Sakleshpur. For uber-luxury, head to the luxury resorts in Coorg or Chickmagalur.

Green Route Trek

sakleshpur green route trek

Situated in the heart of western ghats and on Bangalore-Mangalore railway line, Sakleshpur to Yedakumeri railway trek offers a magnificent view of green misty hills, milky waterfalls, dark tunnels and old railway bridges over water streams and deep valleys.

A few hours walk and the jungle gets thicker. The flat terrain gives way to hills, and streams appear in the intersection of these hills. These hills and streams are in plenty, and this geography has resulted in creation of many tall bridges and long tunnels for the tracks. They are a prime attraction of the trek. There are bridges and tunnels that are almost a kilometer long. Bridges can be really high from the valley floor and are definitely not for the acrophobic(People with fear of heights). And the tunnels tend to be pitch dark and infested with bats, certainly not for those who fear darkness. The total walk can be anywhere from 10 to 16km to Yedakumeri – so some fitness is necessary to make the walk.

The bridges offer open and beautiful view of the valleys. Sometimes you can walk down the bridge and get into the streams, and take a dip in the clear and cold waters. You will also see water gushing down like a shower from openings in the tunnels, which serve as a refreshing shower if you are tired of the walk. We once made the walk in the middle of the monsoon, and the seeing water everywhere is a joy. You wade across the streams that seem to intersect with the tracks. The tunnels are always sounding with flow of water. Everything you see is wet, wet and wet. Its usually pouring day and night and you have to be either very well prepared or be ready to get completely wet. We had both: we were well prepared and yet we were ready to get completely wet and enjoy the rains.

We would be more than happy to help you. Our team advisor are at your service to help you.

Wanna end up in prison? Try this trek.

"The Green Route Trek" a.k.a "The Sakleshpur Railway Trek". Caution/Warning: The Green Route Trek is "BANNED" and is illegal to trek. A case will be registered against you and you'll be imprisoned for a day or two if you are caught by the officials. At the very least, you'll be fined heftily.

Photo of Wanna end up in prison? Try this trek. 3/22 by The Travelling Assassin

Yeah, that did scare me too. But how did I do it?. Here's my story.

I am beat. The city life sucks. Sleep is next to impossible. It's been a while since I've been crazy. So it is only fitting that I take this journey or mini odyssey to reclaim life. A journey with a different direction; a direction which leads to those unexplored hill havens of western ghats to rediscover the landscapes from a fairy tale which makes me forget the difference between dreams and reality.

It's a month end and this particular trip has to be done on a shoestring budget. I crave to wander those surreal places without putting a dent in my pocket. With the right kind of planning and a little help from the internet god, I intend to make this trip on a damn cheap budget that would make Robert Vadra go "Are you serious!" but in a good way.

[FYI I make this trip just under the rock bottom price of INR 565 per day excluding fuel and contraband *wink*. After all, when you pay for the experience, you are a tourist. But when you just go out there and get it, you are a traveler.]

Must Read: hampta pass trek

This trip is about some serious touring and I plan on traveling alone; but then, I tag along my crazy cousin (neither a naxalite nor a convict), just because I need someone to fight with me when I show off my WWE skills while being intoxicated; because let's face it, younger siblings and cousins - best props ever.

Why the Illegal Green Route Trek?.

Photo of Wanna end up in prison? Try this trek. 4/22 by The Travelling Assassin

Mainly because its illegal. I mean what's the fun without the fun right?.

Yeah, and also because the western ghats in itself has more secrets and surprises than half the world combined. There are places to go and sights to see in the western ghats that will surprise you beyond belief. The green route trek is one among them. Nestled 3800 feet above sea level in the foothills of the western ghats with miles and miles of lush greenery, the forests here are more mysterious than the amazon. With numerous waterfalls accompanied by flora and fauna, 57 tunnels and 109 bridges with varying heights, the green route trek (52 kilometers total) is every trekker's eternal paradise.

Why is it Banned?.

Photo of Wanna end up in prison? Try this trek. 5/22 by The Travelling Assassin

People have got lost here. "Some have even died" they say. Some say "the bridges are not safe, the construction is rusted. Reconstruction is in process". And its all true. So, we gear up to match the color of our motorcycles. Wait, what??. Yeah, you read that right, while others match their t-shirts with their denims, we (The Royal Enfield fanatics) match ours with the color of our motorcycles. The engines crank. All we hear is the orchestral sound of perfectly timed signature RE thump. Sweet. They run perfect. We check the odometer and get ready to get out there and fill ourselves with full of positivity of life by visiting those splendid waterfalls, magical forests and over worldly picturesqueness. Let's ride was unanimous.

The Hassan highway. We cruise effortlessly on the outskirts until the crave to indulge ourselves with India 's favorite drink (the almighty chai) kicks in. Good old tea. Feels good. The journey continues and we shed our old skin and live a little, de-stress and forget our troubles.

A few more miles and we reach Hassan. The trees do a canopy along the route. Treat for the tired city eyes. Makes us feel special while riding. And finally we see it. The route which divides Donigal and Hongadahalla. The roads are bad. The rocket speed stops. Ending up just as Dillinger is not a good idea. We take the Hongadahalla route and push a few more miles before we call it a day. The camping tent comes out. Feels like a freezer here. One more sleepless night. No regrets though.

We sleep for 2 hours and the dawn kicks in. Splendidly beautiful. The morning mist caresses our faces like we are someone special. Its about time we reached Hongadahalla (hongralla as called by the locals) a sleepy little hamlet some 50 kilometers from Sakleshpur. We find no roads. Absolutely none. Its more like off roading on our metallic motorcycles. Fun times.

Why Hongadahalla?.

Here's the "here's-how-you-can-do-the-illegal-railway-trek" part. The actual green route trek takes us along two stations - Yedukumeri and Donigal. That's where you find officials. You most likely have 100% chance of getting caught and ending up in prison. But, there's also a different route, an unconventional one, a treacherous one, taking along the jungle and grasslands and what not. With blood sucking leeches and thick trees and obviously more challenging terrain, which without a guide is impossible to even think about attempting.

Photo of Wanna end up in prison? Try this trek. 6/22 by The Travelling Assassin

Rewind a month back. My crazy cousin, one hell of a brilliant chap, the one who's responsible for us to trek on that illegal tracks, hires a guide (residing at Hongadahalla) who knows all the nooks and corners of those unforgiving forests of the western ghats. Well, the guide also knows those places and some railway employees where we were not to get caught by trekking along the rail road. (Hehehe smirk).

Mr. Nayan (our guide) is a simple man. Very welcoming; treats us well. We park the beat up motorcycles at his residence and take his 4×4 for a spin on those off roading tracks. Bumpy but fun. I mean serious fun. The locality is desolated. No fancy structures. No traffic. No madness. Its calm as ****. Just what we need. Invigoration for the senses.

We get ready for a long trek. He provides us rice cakes called as "Akki Roti". We eat some. Pack some. "The trek starts from Kaginahare and ends at Gundya. 28 *bleeping* kilometers through the jungle and the tracks" he says. "Its 8 am and we have to reach Gundya by 5 pm" he says. We feel ecstatic. Finally we are doing one of those treks we always wanted to do. The one which we were trying to do, dying to do for years now. "The Illegal Green Route Trek". Goosebumps.

The tracks are half way through the trek and some parts of the forest are so bloody thick, we have to use the guide's machete to get access. Take my word for it. Trekking here without a guide is impossible. Getting lost is inevitable. Not to mention getting caught and spending a day or two in prison.

Photo of Wanna end up in prison? Try this trek. 7/22 by The Travelling Assassin

Thirst is as basic as breathing and in our search for life saving water; we end up finding some which is pure than the purest of Hema Malini endorsed Kent water. Blood sucking leeches are common. Shedding blood in the forest is mandatory.

Photo of Wanna end up in prison? Try this trek. 8/22 by The Travelling Assassin

We trek a few miles, snaking our way around the grasslands and the forest. Amongst the chirping birds, crawling reptiles, running water, and the lush greens. And finally, at a distance we see it. The tracks. It would be an understatement if I say we are kids in a candy store. Trekking on these tracks happens to be among the top ten treks on our list and being here is just pure excitement. What makes it more exciting?. The fear of getting caught. I mean its bloody "BANNED". Awesomeness.

Photo of Wanna end up in prison? Try this trek. 9/22 by The Travelling Assassin

We do a total of 27 bridges, 16 tunnels, 4 water spots, 1 abandoned railway station and 2 heavy land slides. 2 trains pass us, 1 being a railway wagon which carries work material and other being a passenger. We meet a couple of railway workers too. Hear stories about the trek and click a few pictures as well. The sight all around inspires. It's on a whole different level. Its pure.

Photo of Wanna end up in prison? Try this trek. 10/22 by The Travelling Assassin

We trek again. And then, all of a sudden we hear whistles. A railway trolley speeds towards us. I see two railway officials on the trolley. My heart skips beats. This is it. We are caught; we think. We just stand there blank. Nothing's on our mind. You know, that feeling when you are caught. But this feeling is a two notches higher. We are getting a case registered on us we think. The trolley approaches and the officials give us a stink eye. We stand guilty. As we look, the trolley speeds past us. The officials seem to be in no mood to get us convicted. They were whistling to get us off of the god damn tracks so that we wouldn't end up as track kill.

Photo of Wanna end up in prison? Try this trek. 14/22 by The Travelling Assassin

They disappear. Such a relief. The very next thing we do is empty our bladders and just laugh. We laugh like drunk f***s. Waiting for a while seems to be the best thing to do. The beauty of the western ghats is too good to pass up. Again we make pace. Slowly, admiring the surroundings.

Photo of Wanna end up in prison? Try this trek. 15/22 by The Travelling Assassin

A few miles in stands a magnificent tunnel. Tunnel number 25. "This must be the holy mother of tunnels" he says, my cousin. 553 meters long. A tunnel for more than half a kilometers; just mesmerizing. Entering it feels spooky and the chill breeze inside makes it worse. The water from the mountains seep from the top, dripping drop by drop, making a weird smell on the tracks.

Photo of Wanna end up in prison? Try this trek. 16/22 by The Travelling Assassin

Its pitch dark inside. We can't see a thing. We fear of snakes and reptiles. Sometimes we slip. Sometimes we fall. "What if a train comes?" he asks. No replies. Even Batman would have chills entering this tunnel. The only source is a small beam of light from the torch we carry. Its the only life saver for the next 500 meters.

Photo of Wanna end up in prison? Try this trek. 18/22 by The Travelling Assassin

Walking past miles and miles of eye candy, we finally bid adieu to "The Green Route" and enter the forest again. Ah the forest!. The leech infested forest. More treacherous than the one before. Anyway, the sight of the river Kempuhole inspires us to keep the horses moving. With a few slips, falls, tumbles and slides we finally reach civilization. Kempuhole greets us. And take my word for it, No chlorinated Olympic size swimming pool gives you the pleasure of mother nature's Jacuzzi. The water is so splendid, swimming here makes you feel like a maharaja.

Photo of Wanna end up in prison? Try this trek. 19/22 by The Travelling Assassin

All said and done, we finally reach Gundya. Take a public transport and end up in Subramanya just in time for a hot cup of tea. The next day we trek again. But this one's legal. "The Kumara Parvatha".

Now that I've told you how the "Illegal Green Route trek" can be done, go put that on your wish list. You can thank me later.

Caution: Stay away from Yedukumeri and Donigal stations.

Just in case you get caught; you don't know me......

The Baltic Sea Cycle Route Denmark’s longest cycle route – all 820km of it – encompasses islands and ferries, sheltered bays and seafaring ports as it traces the Baltic Sea coast. The Rosnæs peninsula wineries Pop your bike on a train and travel roughly two and a half hours west of Copenhagen to find a winery route made for cyclists. On the Rosnæs peninsula, among the driest and sunniest spots in the country, vines grow, grapes are pressed and wine tours by bike are the thing to do. Starting at Stub Vingård , a 16km trail runs to Rosnæs Vingård through a green landscape carved by the last ice age, taking in the Barfod and Dyrehøj wineries along the way.

The Limfjord Route Another long route – this time 610km – the journey around the Limfjord in North Jutland is broken into stages and winds around the fjord from Aalborg, via ferries and bridges. There are plenty of restaurants along the way, giving you the chance to enjoy the region’s local oysters.

Berlin-Copenhagen Two lively cities with a sea between them and a shared love of cycling unite via this 630km route . The tour skirts the white cliffs of Møn and the flower-filled meadows of Falster on the way to the ferry to Germany.

The Fjord Path Half an hour west of Copenhagen, the journey around the Isefjord and Roskilde fjord begins. How much would it cost to finish Columbus sidewalks? You could buy an MLB team for less

sakleshpur green route trek

Across uneven terrain, over rocks, under trees and at times through patches of mud and dirt.

It's a path that might sound fun to hikers. But without sidewalks along Cooke Road in Columbus' Clintonville neighborhood, it's one of two routes brothers Elliot and Henry Meyer can take home from their school bus stop every afternoon.

Elliot, 7, and Henry, 10, have strolled the path countless times as cars fly by just feet away on the busy two-lane road. It's a potentially dangerous trek that weighs on their parents, but one that many central Ohioans know themselves as more than half of Columbus remains without sidewalks to protect pedestrians more than 212 years after the city was founded.

As much as 60% of Columbus remains without sidewalks or curbs — the small yet critical barrier that helps safeguard pedestrians from drivers moving much faster down the road. That, coupled with federal research that shows 100 kids are killed and more than 25,000 are injured going to and from school each year , makes every walk from the bus stop more treacherous than it needs to be, said Chuck Meyer, the boys' father.

Share your story: What are sidewalks like in your Columbus neighborhood? Let The Dispatch know

"Frankly we're only doing it in the afternoon, I don't even want to think about the additional risks of doing that in the morning when it's dark out and people are going to work," Meyer said of the trek home from his children's bus stop. "It feels like a problem you would have in a rural area and not in a city that's been around as long as Columbus."

Columbus' lacks of sidewalks and curbs is a complicated problem, said Brian Ashworth, the city's transportation planning manager.

Chief among the reasons is the cost. Constructing a new sidewalk costs an estimated $400 a foot, Ashworth said, estimating all costs such as leveling and removing trees but not specifically whether using asphalt or cement. That estimated figure translates to more than $2.1 million for a mile of sidewalk.

To fill in 1,453 miles of sidewalk gaps in the city at that price tag, Columbus would need to spend more than $3 billion. It would cost less to buy a Major League Baseball team, a few yachts or a private island near the Bahamas.

"A lot of it is funding, to be honest," Ashworth said. "We don't have that much that's set aside. We only have a certain amount of annual capital improvement budget from city council specific to sidewalk funding."

On top of cost, many areas of Columbus that don't have sidewalks or curbs were annexed by the city in later years or were built before sidewalks were required, Ashworth said. Often, constructing sidewalks or multi-use pathways in already developed areas leads to right-of-way issues or the need to move utility poles.

And while adding sidewalks typically increases home values in neighborhoods, Ashworth said some residents don't want to deal with the expected upkeep.

"We're trying to kind of work backwards in a lot of areas of our community," Ashworth said. "In some places, even not far from Downtown neighborhoods, people just don't want sidewalks. They've been without them for decades and they don't want what they think might come with them."

2 miles versus 47 miles

Although resources limit new sidewalks and paths, Mayor Andrew Ginther announced a $100-million, two-mile urban pathway in February that will be built throughout Downtown, including areas that have existing sidewalks.

Named the Capital Line, it will be funded by private, public and philanthropic sources. If the $100 million was instead put toward paths in areas without them, it could fund as much as 47.3 miles of sidewalks, using the city's own cost estimates.

Peggy Williams, secretary and zoning chair for the South Linden Area Commission, told The Dispatch it's difficult for her to understand why the Capital Line is such a high priority instead of areas still in need of safe walking routes.

"You could use that $100 million to finish all the sidewalks in Linden or split it up to help take care of all the other neighborhoods," she said.

Although costly, the Capital Line could yield new business development and result in hundreds of millions in new revenue coming from places along the path, city spokeswoman Melanie Crabill told The Dispatch.

When asked about the lack of sidewalks, Crabill said the city is in the midst of taking inventory of them. The last time that was done a few years ago, 53% of Columbus had access to sidewalks, with or without curbs and not including multi-use paths.

"Pedestrian safety is a priority for all of our neighborhoods, including Downtown," Crabill said via email. "We fully believe we can support the Capital Line project while still supporting pedestrian safety projects around the city."

At least 13 projects in progress or recently completed will add miles of sidewalk in different areas of Columbus this year, and the forthcoming Linden Green Line will transform a seven-mile corridor of abandoned railway into a park and trail running from Downtown, through Linden and to Cooper Park on the North Side, according to the city.

A ballot initiative that voters could decide on this fall called LinkUS would fund more than 500 miles of new sidewalks and bus rapid transit in central Ohio. Columbus also requires private developers to construct sidewalks outside new buildings or pay money to help build sidewalks throughout the city, Ashworth said.

But gaps remain, including the ones Meyer's children and others have to trek across each day.

As of 2021, there were at least 3,150 miles of gaps throughout all of Franklin County, according to a mobility report from LinkUS. At each of those gaps where sidewalks end, pedestrian accidents are twice as likely to occur, according to the Federal Highway Administration.

Numbers like those have left Meyer questioning why work on the Capital Line, which is slated to begin in 2025, should take precedence over those gaps in sidewalks and neighborhoods without any at all.

"Let's get the core functional services of the city taken care of before we worry about that," Meyer said.

'I almost got hit yesterday'

Shelisa Nicole Williams has no choice.

As a neighborhood commissioner, she wants to serve her community. But every time she leaves her house, she's forced to put her life at risk.

Williams uses a wheelchair and travels around her neighborhood in it. But sidewalk gaps and a lack of walkways altogether force her to roll along city streets, where she said not a week goes by without her almost getting run over.

"It happens all the time. I almost got hit yesterday," Williams said referring to last Monday. "I don't let my wheelchair define me. ... I just take it day by day. But you just want people to care about what you're going through."

While Williams wants more and improved sidewalks so she can travel worry-free throughout her entire neighborhood, she said it's about more than just her own needs.

Not everyone in South Linden owns a car, Williams said, which makes sidewalks all the more necessary so people can safely get to bus stops.

Being car-focused isn't unique to Columbus, though.

Like many American cities that grew substantially after the 1950s, much of modern Columbus was built around car culture, said Jason Reece, an associate professor of city and regional planning at Ohio State University.

"It's definitely a time period thing. ... We were really building only for cars in that time period and paying limited attention to the role of sidewalks," Reece said. "That creates quite a conundrum, because then you have a lot of the city that's disconnected from pedestrian access, which means you got to go back in and retrofit those neighborhoods."

It typically takes decades for cities to shift their thinking when it comes to mobility, Reece said. But that can seem like forever for residents of Columbus neighborhoods that have only a patchwork of sidewalks or none at all, he said.

As summer approaches, Williams worries about the children in South Linden who will be out and about. She thinks about how they'll rely on the mishmash of area sidewalks to get to friends' houses or events.

"We need wider sidewalks, safer sidewalks, sidewalks with no gaps and no holes in them. Period," Williams said.

'We're forgotten about'

Trying to get a sidewalk put in has become something of a hobby for Mallory Honigford.

Honigford, who lives on Columbus' Northwest Side with her husband, Craig, and their three kids, said she has been submitting requests for a sidewalk to the city's 311 service since at least 2015 .

The Honigfords live at the intersection of Constitution Place and Wilson Bridge Road, and the sidewalk stops at the end of their driveway.

So much is nearby, including the school Mallory Honigford's kids attend and Olentangy Park. But the mother of three said her family feels trapped by a busy thoroughfare with no walkway other than the road's narrow shoulder.

"We've done family bike rides and walks, but we're always trudging through grass and people's front yards," she said.

While the Honigfords have a Columbus address, Worthington is just blocks away. It's areas like these where Columbus residents feel like they live in an odd limbo between the city of Columbus and nearby suburbs, said Sharon Rastatter, chair of Columbus's Far West Side area commission.

Rastatter said she often sees people walking along roads without sidewalks in her neighborhood to get to school, stores or jobs. Some of the Far West Side is adjacent to Hilliard, which Rastatter said has left many in that area feeling like they're on their own.

"We're forgotten about ... but the sad thing is we're used to it," Rastatter said. "The city casts shade on us for living in a suburban area, but they shouldn't have annexed us if they didn't want to deal with us."

Year after year, Mallory Honigford said she received generic denial emails from the city stating there wasn't enough funding to go around for sidewalks. In the intervening years, she's written to the Ohio Department of Transportation and the city of Worthington, but hasn't had any luck.

Finally, after years of being denied a sidewalk, Honigford enlisted the help of her kids in 2022.

Together, her daughters Lucy, 10, and Hazel, 8, wrote and illustrated a letter to city officials asking them to put in sidewalks beyond the street they live on. The girls expressed their frustration, with one of them writing: "It makes me sad that I can't go further with my family. Crossing a busy street and riding (a bike) into the grass is very hard."

Despite the letter, the Honigfords got the same response from Columbus: Their sidewalk request still wasn't in the city's budget.

"No one wants to claim us," Mallory Honigford said. "... I feel like I've tried everything."
