Need Sponsors? This SCCA Partner Helps Drivers and Regions Find Them

Life’s rough when the fender on your competition car is as empty as your bank account. You want to compete in as many of the 2,000 events the Sports Car Club of America® hosts each year , but your wallet rudely says that ain’t gonna happen. What you need is a sponsor – or sponsors – to further your motorsports dreams, but you don’t know the first thing about finding potential sponsors, pitching the right person, and then closing the deal. It turns out, SCCA Spec Miata racer turned pro racing hot shoe Mason Filippi had this exact same problem – and his solution for what he calls “micro sponsorships” can be your solution, too.

“When I was 14 and racing in SCCA, I used to try to hunt for sponsors, and I’d go to local coffee shops around Laguna Seca or I would be at Auto Club Speedway and going to a U.S. Majors Tour race and go into a taco shop to try to raise money,” Filippi says. “Then I’d get stopped when they’d say, ‘How do I pay you?’ I’m like, do you have cash? Can you write me a check? Sometimes I’d be reimbursing my dad. It became a very unprofessional manner of collecting those micro sponsorships.”

Filippi had the same issue while fundraising from relatives who wanted to see him succeed in racing. Consistently, the problem was processing payments.

“When I got to the pro level, I was like, why not start a company that helps people with that aspect?” Filippi explains. “That’s where OpenFender came from. ‘OpenFender’ stands for the fender that’s ‘open’ that you’re trying to sell.”

OpenFender is also an SCCA partner.

“OpenFender is a fundraising and sponsorship platform for motorsports,” Filippi says. “We help put the fan, the sponsor, the driver and, in the case of the SCCA, the Regions in one place – you have a micro site where you can place all of your social media and collect sponsorship money. It’s like having an online driver resume, but people can also find you and sponsors can hunt for you.”

OpenFender also minimizes time setting up a website that will help fund racing ambitions.

“I tried to make the easiest platform that drivers can use, spending the least amount of their time on the computer,” he adds. “But at the same time, the site allows them to fundraise, sell their sponsorships, and have an online racing fundraising website that doesn’t cost them anything.”

Filippi Did, And You Can Too

Setting up an OpenFender account is simple and – best of all – free. You begin by creating a profile where you can include anything from a bio to social media links and images, and then dive into the fundraising portion of the site.

“I would say people should set up an open sponsorship campaign for anything like $25 and up,” Filippi advises of the first thing to do when creating an OpenFender account. The next step, he says, is pushing the link to your OpenFender profile through social media and email. You can also print up cards to hand out at local shops when hunting for sponsorships. When people are interested, they click the link and purchase the level of sponsorship you’re offering.

“OpenFender uses Stripe for the payments, which does everything you need to track payments and offers tax info for the sponsoring companies,” says Filippi.

Some success stories include Gage Korn, who Filippi notes raised $13,500 in just two and a half weeks to go to the international karting race in Italy. “He said the best part was sponsors could pay with a credit card or Apple Pay, and it took them 15 seconds as opposed to having to find a checkbook or going to accounting,” Filippi says. “He was able to sell so many micro sponsorships doing that.”

Another racer, Justin Dittrich, had a goal of racing in every state, so he used OpenFender to cover travel expenses. “As creative and as much effort as drivers put in is how much they can get out of it,” Filippi adds.

Giving Back

OpenFender covers its costs by taking a percentage of the money raised through sponsorship campaigns on the website. The portion it takes covers credit card transaction fees and overhead for operating the company. OpenFender uses much of the remaining money to sponsor drivers.

“For every $15,000 we raise on the platform, we take $1,000 of that and sponsor a driver,” says Filippi. “It doesn’t matter who they are or what they’re racing, all they have to do is follow the rules. And the rules are, we teach them how to be a better representation of a brand via the website and our email campaigns – if they follow the criteria, we sponsor the best one with $1,000 that month.”

Filippi also uses OpenFender to attract big sponsors. “We brought on Alpinestars before SuperNats, and they made a suit for a kid that was going to Vegas with a basic suit,” he says. “After that, we brought on Winding Road Racing and gave away a Bell helmet. We leverage having all of the drivers on one platform to bring in bigger sponsors.”

SCCA Regions and Volunteers Can Benefit, Too

Motorsports fundraising possibilities are fairly limitless on OpenFender. Proving that point, Filippi has built OpenFender pages for all of SCCA’s Regions, offering the Regions another avenue for fundraising.

“We’ve made a page for all SCCA Regions, so Regions can use this to fundraise for their volunteers,” Filippi says. “We wrote bios pulling info from all of the Region websites, and we’ve tried to build basic templates. I sent the Region leaders emails on how to do it – and they can change anything they want to in their OpenFender profile.”

Down the Road

What you see with OpenFender isn’t what it will always be. “We’ve got some cool features we’re looking to build into the platform,” Filippi says. “We’re looking to host video, allow for customization on driver profiles, and more. Right now it’s one big template, but we’re going to make it so you can change the colors, upload a logo, and more.”

Merchandise store integration is also on the horizon, as is expanding beyond drivers.

“We’re building another site for everyone who’s not a driver, so if you’re a driver looking for a photographer, you can look for them on there,” Filippi says. “Or if you’re a photographer, you can find drivers. Or mechanics – there’s nowhere for them to advertise their experience right now.”

That’s the future. Today, OpenFender is an excellent tool that opens up a world of possibilities. Regardless of where you are in your motorsports journey, sponsorship – be it from a company or grandma – is always welcome. And for SCCA Regions, donations for volunteers can never be too plentiful.

OpenFender won’t solve all of your funding needs, but it’s a fantastic – and free – tool that can help you achieve your dreams.

Performing Arts Fort Worth and Texas Ballet Theater are proud to present in partnership   A Tribute to Peace – North Texas Welcomes Kyiv City Ballet . This neo-classical work, choreographed by Ekaterina Kozlova and Ivan Kozlov, comes to Bass Hall as part of a new tour for the Kyiv City Ballet, marking the company’s first performances in the United States and the only tour stop in Texas.  The evening will feature excerpts from the classical ballets   Don Quixote ,   La   Bayadere   and   Paquite pas de deux , and   Men of Kyiv , a Ukrainian folk dance.     Texas Ballet Theater will also perform a mixed repertory program.   The day before Ukraine was invaded in February, the Kyiv City Ballet unknowingly took one of the last flights out of Kyiv. The company flew to Paris to begin a long-planned tour. They have not returned home. The country of France sheltered them and the company has been performing throughout France, and now Europe, since the invasion began. “We are honored to share the beauty of ballet with US audiences, through Ukrainian artists” said Ivan Kozlov, Artistic Director. “Touring the States for the first time with a range of ballets makes an important global statement. It demonstrates the resilience of the Ukrainian people.” The Kyiv City Ballet’s mission is to bring joy to audiences through ballet by bringing exemplary artists to theatres around the world. In the past decade, the company has successfully toured throughout dozens of countries on four continents.

Answering golf's biggest questions after Scottie Scheffler's Masters win

Scottie Scheffler tries to put into words what it means to win the 2024 Masters and wearing the iconic green jacket for the second time. (1:24)

The 2024 Masters tournament is over and for the second time in three years Scottie Scheffler reigns supreme. With Scheffler now the owner of two green jackets, the rest of major season will feature the world's best players trying to take down the world No. 1.

From Scheffler's potential to Rory McIlroy's major quest to Tiger Woods' future plans, here are six lingering questions as the golf world shifts its focus from Augusta to the PGA Championship at Valhalla Country Club in May.

What's the ceiling for Scheffler?

Schlabach: I honestly don't think Scheffler has a ceiling right now. Over the past two years, he has matured tremendously as a golfer. He admitted Sunday that playing golf will become less of a priority after his wife, Meredith, gives birth to their first child later this month.

But Scheffler also said that he will always care deeply about winning golf tournaments -- almost wanting to win too much. I think capturing a second green jacket is confirmation that he's the best golfer in the world. He has won nine times since February 2022, but only one of them was at a major championship.

Now, he has won two green jackets. I don't think it's a question of whether Scheffler will win another major championship. It's a question of how many he's going to win and how long it's going to take him to pile them up.

Honestly, is it too early to talk about him winning a potential Grand Slam this season? His ball striking and short game are at a completely different level than the rest of the fields he's playing.

Scheffler has played 35 competitive rounds in PGA Tour events this season (the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am was shortened to 54 holes because of weather) and still hasn't recorded a round over par. That's absurd.

"I try not to think about the past or the future too much," Scheffler said. "I love trying to live in the present. I've had a really good start to the year, and I hope that I can continue on this path that I'm on.

"I'm going to continue to put in the work that's got me here. I mean, yeah, that's pretty much it. I'm going to continue to put in the work, keep my head down. I like when I step up on the tee at a tournament, being able to tell myself that I did everything I could to play well and the rest isn't up to me."

Uggetti: Scheffler isn't just the best golfer in the world right now. He also seems to be the most self-aware and level-headed one, too. That's a dangerous combination. On Sunday, Scheffler showed he can win any tournament he plays in and that he has the perfect mindset to do it.

"I feel like playing professional golf is an endlessly not satisfying career," Scheffler said. "I wish I could soak this in a little bit more. Maybe I will tonight when I get home. But at the end of the day, I think that's what the human heart does. You always want more, and I think you have to fight those things and focus on what's good."

Don't get Scheffler wrong. He still wants to win. And he said as much, admitting how much he loves winning and hates losing. As if to prove his point, he's teeing it up at Hilton Head on Thursday and will undoubtedly be the favorite to win.

That's Scheffler's new reality, if it wasn't already before: He will be expected to win and questioned when he doesn't. But if anyone is prepared to shoulder those expectations, it's him. And if anyone has the game to keep winning, be it PGA Tour events or majors this year and beyond, it's him.

Is Rory ever going to complete the career Grand Slam?

Schlabach: I'm still a believer in Rory finally winning a green jacket and becoming only the sixth men's golfer to complete the career Grand Slam in the Masters era. I don't think his performance at Augusta National was a result of him buckling under pressure or wanting a green jacket too much. His current form just isn't great, and he knows it.

McIlroy carded a 1-under 71 in the first round and a 6-over 77 in the second. He didn't play well in the windy conditions, but he wasn't the only one who struggled. He has just one top-10 finish in seven tour events, so his results weren't great coming into Augusta National.

After Sunday's round, McIlroy said he was confident he can turn things around before he plays the final three majors. He's scheduled to play in this week's RBC Heritage and with Shane Lowry in the Zurich Classic of New Orleans team event April 25-28. It sounds like Rory is going to keep grinding to figure things out.

"Yeah, probably not the right time to be analytical at the moment, but I think as well if you're really going to make wholesale changes it's hard to play a lot of golf and make them at the same time," McIlroy said.

"I don't feel like I need to make wholesale changes. That's why I'm playing a lot. But if the time comes that I need to make wholesale changes with my golf swing and really try to reassess, it could be a six-month to a year process. ... I don't think I'm there yet, but there may come a time where I need to address that and really go back to the drawing board."

Uggetti: Everything about McIlroy's experience and talent indicates that he will win another major. Whether it can be at Augusta is a whole other question.

As the four-time major winner talked about this week, he has tried almost every different approach coming into the Masters -- arriving early, arriving late -- and though he has done everything from finish in the top-10 to miss the cut the past few years, he has yet to come close to winning.

"All I can do is come here and try my best," McIlroy said after his 1-under round Saturday. "That's what I do every time I show up. Some years it's better than others. I've just got to keep showing up and try to do the right thing."

Though McIlroy leaves Augusta with a tie for 22nd, there are several opportunities this year for him to add to his major total. He heads to Valhalla for the PGA Championship next, the site of his last major win in 2014. Familiarity hasn't done much for McIlroy at Augusta -- or elsewhere for that matter -- but his game is simply too good to not result in another major.

I'm curious to see how McIlroy approaches Augusta next year after another disappointing result. Will he play more? Will he play less? Will he see another swing coach? Or can he simply stay the course? This year, McIlroy was a firsthand witness to how Scheffler was able to conquer Augusta for the second time in three years.

McIlroy needs only one, but perhaps the key would be winning a major before Augusta. Of course, that's easier said than done, but if McIlroy can win at Valhalla or Pinehurst or Royal Troon, maybe some of the pressure surrounding this week can dissipate and allow him to freely chase after the coveted fourth major on his résumé.

Biggest winner(s) of the tournament?

Schlabach: Besides Scheffler, it has to be Sweden's Ludvig Åberg , who finished solo second at 7 under in his Masters debut. The former Texas Tech star was trying to become the first golfer to win the Masters in his debut since Fuzzy Zoeller in 1979.

Aberg would have been only the third player to win a major championship in his first start since the Masters was first played in 1934 -- Ben Curtis (2003 Open Championship) and Keegan Bradley (2011 PGA Championship) are the others.

Aberg, 24, won the Omega European Masters on the DP World Tour in September, competed for the winning European Ryder Cup team in Rome, and then captured his first PGA Tour victory at the RSM Classic in November.

According to Data Golf, Aberg led the Masters field in strokes gained: putting (3.19) and was third in strokes gained: off the tee (1.66). He has a complete game.

"I think he showed why at the Ryder Cup," McIlroy said. "I think every stage throughout his very, very young career, he's shown that he belongs. Gets the win in Europe, plays the Ryder Cup, gets the win in the States, playing in his first Masters, contending on the back nine on Sunday. He's sort of proven at every stage that he's played at that he belongs."

Uggetti: Let's talk about Max Homa . Though the final result might not have been what Homa and his social media devotees wanted, the week was undoubtedly a win for him. For the first time at Augusta, Homa was in true contention, and that counts for something. He played great golf and managed his way around a tough course by showing he belongs as a top-10 player in the world.

Homa has learned to use patience to his advantage, and though this result will require even more patience, Homa is equipped to handle it.

"I thought I handled myself great," Homa said Sunday. "Really didn't feel like I blinked."

There are certainly shots Homa would like to have back -- such as the tee ball on 12 that resulted in a double bogey -- but in the face of Scheffler's dominance, Homa was able to find solace in how he competed all week and what it meant for his chances at future majors.

"I just feel like I learned. I feel like I took a big leap," Homa said. "The rhetoric on me, and this is from myself, as well, is I have not performed in these things, and I performed for all four days. I didn't throw a 65 in there and sneak my way in. I had to sleep on this every single day, this feeling and kind of this monkey on my back. For me, I think it'll change some things, and then in other ways it'll change nothing at all."

Biggest loser(s) of the tournament?

Schlabach: I'm not sure if anyone has had back-to-back endings at the Masters as painful as Justin Thomas' the past two seasons.

In 2023, JT carded bogeys on three of the last four holes to miss the cut at the Masters by 1 stroke, which left him standing under an umbrella in the rain with his arms crossed in disbelief.

This year, Thomas was in great shape to make the cut and possibly make a move on the weekend. But then he went 7 over on the final four holes to miss the cut by 1 stroke. That's going to sting for a while.

Uggetti: Several golfers finished below Jon Rahm this week, but plenty of golfers finished above him, too, including Scheffler, who beat Rahm by 20 shots. As a defending Masters champion, it's never easy to be the one who has to put the green jacket on the winner knowing full well you did not retain it.

But for Rahm, the dilemma goes beyond Butler Cabin. He showed up to Augusta having played less golf in the lead-up than any other year because of his departure to LIV Golf. It was unclear how much his game would suffer, if at all, from playing in 54-hole events and not tournaments like the Genesis Invitational, where he had also won in 2023.

Rahm looked sluggish, never seeming to find the ideal form to compete, let alone contend. It's difficult to repeat as a Masters champion, but it's also not a great sign that Rahm will leave Augusta and have to wait a week before heading to Australia and Singapore to play against worse fields in order to get ready for the next major in mid May.

Favorites for majors?

Schlabach: The next major championship, the PGA Championship on May 16-19, is going to require a complete game. Based on what I saw at Augusta National, I wouldn't be surprised to see Aberg pick up his first major. But for now, it's hard to pass up Scheffler. I'm tempted to pick him for one or two more. I'm just not sure how being a father for the first time will affect him.

As far as the U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2 in North Carolina on June 13-16, I'll go with Norway's Viktor Hovland , the reigning FedEx Cup champion. I know his game was a mess at the Masters, but his game sets up perfectly for Pinehurst No. 2. Hovland hits the ball long and accurately off the tee, and he's one of the best ball strikers in the world with an iron in his hand. There's plenty of time for him to get his form back in order before the U.S. Open.

Against perhaps better judgment, I'll pick McIlroy to win The Open at Royal Troon Golf Course in Scotland on July 18-21. McIlroy's major drought will be nearly 10 years long by then -- he last won at the 2014 PGA Championship at Valhalla -- and it has to end at some point.

He tied for fifth at Royal Troon in 2016 and for sixth at Royal Liverpool during Brian Harman 's breakthrough major win in July 2023. He tied for fifth at the 2016 Open at Royal Troon and had two top-six finishes in the past two Opens.

Uggetti: The PGA Championship at Valhalla will be very familiar for Rory McIlroy -- who won his last major there in 2014 -- but after watching Ludvig Aberg chart his way around Augusta National Golf Club this past week, it's difficult not to see him having a real shot at any of the year's remaining three majors.

The 24-year-old golfer from Sweden has already shown he can compete at the PGA Tour level and this week, during his first Masters, he did nothing to dissuade the notion that he will be a major winner one day. Aberg hung in with the No. 1 player in the world, Scottie Scheffler, and ...

Speaking of Scheffler, when it comes to the U.S. Open at Pinehurst, there's little to no need to look past Scheffler whose ballstriking should shine on the famous No. 2 course. With improved putting and an underrated short game, I could see Scheffler replicating the kind of performance Martin Kaymer had in 2014, when he went wire-to-wire at Pinehurst to win the U.S. Open by eight shots.

Of all of this year's majors, the Open Championship at Royal Troon seems like the toughest to predict this far ahead. Weather will likely be a factor, and after watching Brian Harman dominate the field at Royal Liverpool, it could really be anyone's game in July. McIlroy should once again fair well, but I like Tommy Fleetwood's chances, too. He keeps getting close and just finished top 10 at the Masters, too.

What's next for Tiger?

Uggetti: Even after looking like a shell of himself Saturday and Sunday and finishing 16-over for the tournament, Woods didn't hesitate in verbally committing to the rest of the year's majors after his final round concluded.

"I'm going to do my homework going forward at Pinehurst, Valhalla and Troon, but that's kind of the game plan," Woods said.

What will likely be more telling is if Tiger plays any other events at all. He had played only 24 competitive holes of golf coming into Augusta and in some instances, the rust really showed this weekend. On Saturday, he looked to be laboring, and though he returned Sunday and appeared to be doing much better, the question of how his body will continue to hold up remains.

Woods, however, remains undeterred from continuing to improve and compete no matter what.

"Keep lifting, keep the motor going, keep the body moving, keep getting stronger, keep progressing," Woods said of what's next. "Hopefully the practice sessions will keep getting longer."

It's clear that the more golf Woods plays, the more prepared he will be for the majors in which he's still trying to compete. But it's not that easy when his body is still a daily obstacle he'll have to overcome. At least this week, he was able to finish 72 holes.

Schlabach: While posting the worst round of his Masters career (10-over 82) and worst 72-hole total as a professional (16-over 304) had to be humbling for the 15-time major champion, the fact that he finished a 72-hole tournament was a step in the right direction.

Outside of Saturday's third round, when he lost his swing and struggled in windy conditions, he didn't look that bad. He drove the ball well off the tee and had a really good short game. His iron play and putting looked rusty, but that was to be expected after he played only 24 competitive holes before the Masters.

The fact that Tiger set a Masters record with his 24th consecutive cut is pretty remarkable.

The First Look: Masters Tournament

The First Look

Change Text Size

It's time for the first major championship of the PGA TOUR season.

Augusta National is primed and ready for the 2024 Masters Tournament after a fabulous finish to the Augusta National Women’s Amateur and the wonderful Drive, Chip & Putt National Final.

Scottie Scheffler recently added a second PLAYERS Championship to his resume. Can the defending champ do the same at the Masters? He is the unquestioned No. 1 player in the world right now, but he will have plenty of challengers.

Here's everything you need to know as the TOUR returns to Augusta.

NOTABLE INVITES AND AMATEURS: Fred Ridley, the chairman of the Augusta National Golf Club and the Masters, extended three special invitations for 2024 to Denmark’s Thorbjørn Olesen , Japan’s Ryo Hisatsune and Chile’s Joaquin Niemann . Olesen, who holds dual DP World Tour and PGA TOUR membership, has won three years in a row on the DP World Tour and finished T6 in his Masters debut in 2013. Hisatsune was last year’s Rookie of the Year on the DP World Tour and has made seven of 10 cuts on the PGA TOUR this season. This will be his Masters debut. Niemann will be playing his fifth Masters… World No. 1 amateur Christo Lamprecht of South Africa headlines the amateur contingent. Lamprecht, who is in the field as the reigning British Amateur champion, made headlines by holding the first-round lead at The Open. Lamprecht also is No. 2 in PGA TOUR University. The other amateurs in the Masters are Santiago de la Fuente of Mexico (the Latin America Amateur Championship winner), Neal Shipley of the United States (U.S. Amateur finalist), Australia’s Jasper Stubbs (Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship winner) and Stewart Hagestad (U.S. Mid-Amateur champion). All of the amateurs except Hagestad are making their Masters debut. Hagestad is playing for a third time; he was the low amateur in 2017.

SIGNATURE EVENT STORYLINES: The Aon Next 10 and Aon Swing 5 for the RBC Heritage will be finalized this week. Though the Masters does not count towards the Aon Swing 5, it could change if Peter Malnati or Thomas Detry are bumped from the Aon Next 10 this week. Malnati and Detry would move into the Aon Swing 5 if they fall out of the Aon Next 10. Click here for the full standings.

COMCAST BUSINESS TOUR TOP 10 UPDATES: Ludvig Åberg and Chris Kirk swapped spots in the TOUR TOP 10 after the Valero Texas Open, with Aberg now at No. 8 and Kirk at No. 9. The rest of the TOUR TOP 10 remained the same… Akshay Bhatia jumped from No. 55 to No. 12 in the standings after his victory and is within shouting distance of the TOUR TOP 10 for the first time… Denny McCarthy , who Bhatia topped in a playoff in San Antonio, moved from No. 85 to No. 19.

FEDEXCUP: Winner receives 750 FedExCup points.

COURSE: Augusta National Golf Club, par 72, 7,555 yards. After multiple changes in 2022 and 2023, there was just one update for 2024, as the par-5 second was lengthened by 10 yards. Over the past three Masters, the second hole played as the easiest each year.

Rory McIlroy, in his pre-tournament press conference at the Valero Texas Open, also mentioned there were changes to the greens on Nos. 2, 4 and 6.

“There's like a back middle hole location on two, there's a slightly bigger area in there where they can sort of move that around a little bit," he said. "On four they've sort of made the back right section a little bit bigger for an extra pin position there. And then six is different, like the top right plateau is definitely bigger and then they've flattened out a section in the back left to maybe have an extra hole location there, too."

72-HOLE RECORD: 268, Dustin Johnson (2020)

18-HOLE RECORD: 63, Nick Price (third round, 1986) and Greg Norman (first round, 1996)

LAST TIME: Jon Rahm won the green jacket in a come-from-behind triumph on a marathon final day at Augusta National. Rahm was four shots back of the leader, Brooks Koepka, to start Sunday and had to play 30 holes due to weather knocking out much of Saturday’s third round. Rahm shot a final-round 69 to win by four over Koepka and Phil Mickelson. Jordan Spieth and Russell Henley finished tied for fourth, along with Patrick Reed.

Stranded Abroad, Kyiv City Ballet Announces Its First American Tour

The dance company has been staying in Paris since the Russian invasion of Ukraine

Ukrainian ballet dancers

On February 23, the  Kyiv City Ballet arrived in Paris to perform a children’s version of The Nutcracker . The tour was supposed to last two weeks. But the next day, Russia invaded Ukraine —and the company has remained in Paris ever since.

As the war drags on, the dancers’ future remains uncertain. In the meantime, though, the company has announced that it will make its first United States tour this fall, the  New York Times ’ Kalia Richardson reports. Starting in September, the tour will visit 13 cities, among them Chicago, New York, Detroit and Charlotte.

“Touring the States for the first time with a range of ballets makes an important global statement,” says artistic director Ivan Kozlov in a  statement . “It demonstrates the resilience of the Ukrainian people.”

Featured performances will include  Swan Lake and three other repertory works, per the Times. (The ballet lists on its  website   Giselle ,  Sleeping Beauty , and  Romeo and Juliet as some of the classical ballets it frequently performs.) The troupe will also participate in New York City Center’s upcoming Fall for Dance Festival .

When news broke of the Russian invasion, “everyone was on their phones, everyone was allowed to bring their phones onstage so they could stay [in touch] with their families,” Kozlov tells Lisa Bryant of  Voice of America (VOA). “Everybody was shocked. Everybody didn’t know what to do.”

Some members of the troupe tried to go back to Ukraine to enlist in the army but were turned away due to lack of experience, Kozlov tells the Times . Paris’ City Hall granted the dancers artistic residency at the  Théâtre du Châtelet and has housed them at a suburban hotel, per VOA.

“You can only create when you are free, and we need to hear what they are expressing,”  Anne Hidalgo , the mayor of Paris, told the  Times ’ Aurelien Breeden and Marina Harss in March. “They will be here for as long as it takes; I am absolutely not setting any deadline.”

The company only brought the costumes it needed for its Nutcracker tour. All of the troupe’s other possessions—music, videos, documents—were left behind in Kyiv.

“We were totally unprepared for this,” director Ekaterina Kozlova told National Geographic ’s Madeleine Schwartz in March. “We basically just psychologically said goodbye to everything that we have.”

Donations have supplied the company with tights and leotards, and a grant from the  Trust for Mutual Understanding has covered travel costs, per the Times. Kozlov says that the dancers want to share both their art and their spirit of strength in the face of war on the tour and are hoping to share Ukrainian stories with American dancers through workshops and classes.

The troupe performs ballet in addition to traditional  Ukrainian dances , which feature vibrant costumes, broad gestures and bouncing movements. While classical ballet is considered to be one of Russia’s greatest art forms and has been used as a display of nationalism by various regimes, it was also used as a  political tool during the Soviet Union to subtly speak out against the era’s leaders.

Many Ukrainian and Russian ballet students train at the same schools. Koslov has many friends in Russia, he told the Times in March: “They are telling me that they would love to say or do something, but they cannot because they are afraid.”

About this event

U.S. Majors Tour

The U.S. Majors Tour is the pinnacle of championship racing in North America.

This isn't Easy Street. This is where America's best amateur drivers race. It means start-to-finish, wheel-to-wheel action. It's where drivers not only put their cars on the track, they put their pride on the line.

Make no mistake, this is not country club driving. The kindred spirit found here is mixed with fuel and emotion. Adrenaline pumps a little harder here.

Take a close look. It's not for everyone. If you long for the flag that welcomes or denies you, we have a spot for you. Welcome to the Majors.

Event requirements

For 2024, SCCA is again offering the ability for drivers to register for the SCCA U.S. Majors Tour (Series Registration) and receive the following benefits:

  • $50 Series Registration fee includes one single or two-digit number in the conference of their choosing (usually their home conference.) Per GCR section 9.3.29.a - The numeral "1" shall be exclusively reserved for the current national champion in each class for national events.
  • The same single or two-digit number can be reserved (if available) in other conferences for an additional $50 per conference.
  • $150 Series Registration will allow a driver to register a single three-digit number for all six conferences (leading digit will be a “1”)
  • Drivers with a 2023 U.S. Majors Tour series registration will have until November 15th at 9 am CST to reserve that conference number for 2024.  At that time, unreserved numbers will be released back into the general pool.
  • Allows drivers to prepare number graphics for their cars that will be good for the U.S. Majors/Super Tour events in their conference as long as registration is complete 14 days prior to the events start date.
  • If a reserve # is purchased after a specific event registration opens, the number is not guaranteed.
  • Receive series decals for car placement prior to events.
  • Special Hoosier SCCA U.S. Majors Tour branded hard card, be sure you have a headshot photo uploaded through your member account portal ( my.scca.com ).
  • Discount coupon(s) for merchandise at www.sccagear.com .  $25 coupon for each two-digit $50 conference reservation or one $50 coupon for a three-digit $150 series registration.

Reserved numbers will be honored until 14 days prior to the event start.   In-Conference reserved numbers will be given priority over out-of-conference reserved numbers for event registration.  In the case of a dual-conference event, any duplicate reserved number requests will be resolved by earliest event registration time stamp.

The word “reserved” does not mean “permanent.” If class run groups for any event are different than the groups noted below, number assignments for that event will give preference to the in-conference drivers who register first, then further duplicate requests will be resolved by earliest event registration time stamp.

Numbers will be assigned by Conference/Race Group.  Only SCCA Full Competition license holders may register for the Majors series.  Both membership and competition license must be current when registering for the series.

Monologues, scenes, reviews, commentaries, one-act and full-length plays, interviews, and events from the world of theatre, the kyiv city ballet to tour the us in an american premiere…september – october 2022.

scca majors tour

The Kyiv City Ballet  ( www.kcbtheater.com ), under the artistic direction of  Ivan Kozlov , announced today a U.S tour from  September 16 to October 24, 2022 . The Fall tour is a US premiere and marks the  Kyiv City Ballet’s  first United States performances ever.

The day before Ukraine was invaded in February,  The Kyiv City Ballet  unknowingly took one of the last flights out of Kyiv. The company flew to Paris to begin a long planned tour. They have not returned home. The country of France sheltered them and the company has been performing throughout France, and now Europe, since the invasion began.

The US tour will include a full-length  Swan Lake  (choreography by Marius Petipa, Lev Ivanov and Ivan Kozlov), and a second mixed repertory program of three ballets:  Thoughts  (choreography by Vladyslav Dobshynskyi) a contemporary ballet,  Tribute to Peace  (choreography by Ekaterina and Ivan Kozlov) a neo-classical work, and  Men of Kyiv  (choreography by Pavlo Virsky )  a Ukranian folk dance.

“We are honored to share the beauty of ballet with US audiences, through Ukranian artists” said  Ivan Kozlov , Artistic Director. “Touring the States for the first time with a range of ballets makes an important global statement. It demonstrates the resilience of the Ukrainian people.”

The Kyiv City Ballet’s  mission is to bring joy to audiences through ballet by bringing exemplary artists to theatres around the world. In the past decade, the company has successfully toured throughout dozens of countries on four continents.

Two of Ukraine’s prima ballerinas:  Krystina Kadashevych  and  Oksana Bondarenko  will perform with the company on their US tour. The company’s principal dancer is  Vsevolod Maevskiy , a former soloist of the Mariinsky Ballet and Kozlov’s former student.

“We are humbled that  Rhizome  has been asked to produce and strategically support the Kyiv City Ballet on their very first tour to the United States,” said producer  Kristopher McDowell . “That major cultural arts centers across the country are coming together to open their doors and their hearts is extraordinary. It is very clear this company and their artistry will have great appeal to non-dance and dance audiences alike.”
