Our Travel + Leisure editors used the train cases over the course of two weeks, packing them full of products, carrying them around, seeing how easy they were to pack in a suitcase or personal item, and noting which ones are truly worth buying. Of course, just like with every piece of luggage, style and function should go hand in hand, so our final selection features products that are just as elegant and timeless as they are practical.

Below, we rounded up the best and sturdiest train cases for your next trip. Our editors will continue using the cases over the course of six months to see how they perform in different travel scenarios, and we will update this article with the results.

This gorgeous case is spacious, with a useful leather divider insert that helps keep products organized.

The interior lining is suede, so it will be difficult to clean in case of accidental spills.

Even for a chronic overpacker, this spacious train case might prove challenging to fill. We packed face and body skincare in it, as well as makeup, and there was still plenty of space left over, especially when we removed the leather divider. And speaking of which, this insert might be one of the case’s best features, as it will help you keep your belongings organized and prevent them from moving around when you're in transit. 

We also found the dual-compartment design extremely helpful as it made fitting products of different sizes and shapes effortless. For example, we packed several eyeshadow palettes, lipsticks, and lip balms in the top compartment, and moisturizers and foundation bottles at the bottom. Need to do touch-ups on the go? This is a large, heavy case that would count as your personal item on a flight.

If you've ever worried that your pricey beauty and skincare items might get crushed inside a flimsy canvas pouch, then you should upgrade to this Calpak vanity case. From the super sturdy, suitcase-level polycarbonate shell to the internal organization and storage capacity, it is worth the investment. The exterior only showed a few scratches after our tests, but nothing inside broke, spilled, or got damaged in any way. And trust us, we did pack a lot — from shampoo and conditioner to delicate makeup, perfume, and skincare products. 

Like a mini version of a suitcase, this train case opens up like a clamshell with a large compartment on each side that you can zip closed. There are also mesh panels and pockets to store smaller objects like cotton swabs or tweezers. And since you'll probably be carrying this case rather than packing it inside a carry-on (it is quite large), you won't be disappointed with the sturdy handle and the removable shoulder strap it comes with, either. We had no issues with crushed or spilled items even after we packed the case into a suitcase, and the vegan leather had no scuffs or signs of damage after we traveled with the bag. For a small train case, this one packs an impressive number of storage pockets and compartments, including a small, removable pouch that can keep cotton swabs separate. The lid is designed with several elastic loops for brushes and a see-through, zippered pocket for small, flat items. This is a splurge, and the fabric lining may not be easy to clean.

From design to portability, this chic Brahmin case stood out during testing in every category, but it especially caught our eye for how stylish it is. The company, which is known for its luxurious leather products, has clearly not cut any corners when making this luxurious train case. Large enough to fit full-size makeup products, its sturdy exterior and structured design kept its shape and did an excellent job of protecting our valuables, even when the case was bumped around and packed tightly with other items in a checked suitcase. 

Though this is one of the pricer items on this list, we loved how well-made and comfortable the top handle was and the fact that it lays flat when not in use. The train case has a spacious main compartment and a side pouch with an elastic closure to prevent any items from moving around. Our packing list included some skincare and makeup, and we were left with plenty of space to fit even more (and none of the items broke open during a road trip). Although we didn't notice any wear and tear or accidental spills, the lining is fabric rather than any water-resistant material, so any stains might be difficult to clean.

The zipper was a little difficult to use around the corners, and there is no trolley sleeve on the back.

If matching luggage sets fit your travel aesthetic, you’ll love this classic train case that you can match to multiple suitcases in Mark & Graham’s Terminal collection . You can choose from white or navy, with matching carry-on and checked suitcases in various styles, all of which you can monogram with up to three letters. We added a single letter to ours, which comes in the form of a vinyl decal, and the personalization is showing no signs of wear and tear after the testing period. Because the case is on the larger side, we wish it had a shoulder strap or a trolley sleeve so you could place it securely on top of the matching luggage to make it more portable.

Looks aside, this train case delivers great organizational capacity. The lid has multiple pockets (not just straps), and the sides of the main compartment are designed with a mixture of elasticized straps and pockets to hold everything from beauty tools and brushes to bottles and other containers. There was so much space left that we could also fit a few jewelry pieces . We noticed that both the lining and the polycarbonate exterior are easy to wipe down (we used Mr. Magic to clean a few smudges on the shell). The zippers did not run as smoothly as some of the other cases we tested, though.

This train case is quite simply stunning — the quality of the leather is impressive (it did not sustain any scuffs or scratches even after we packed it next to ski gear), and the monogram options make it extra special. While the Mark & Graham monogram option above only comes in a vinyl decal, Leatherology offers three monogram styles: debossed, handpainted, or trapunto quilting. It does cost extra to personalize the train case, but you get to choose the font, text size, and color to make it exactly what you want. Plus, the leather bag is available in 12 colors ranging from classy neutrals to bright pops of color.

We tested the medium size, which we thought was compact enough to pack inside a larger bag, but large enough to fit all of your beauty and skincare essentials (and even a small hair straightener) for a multi-day trip. It’s also available in smaller and larger sizes. While the leather construction is not as structured as with some of our other picks, that makes it easier to pack since you can squeeze it in with your other belongings. We also appreciated that the case's lining is nylon, which would make cleaning up any messes a breeze.

This hefty case can fit quite a lot of products in it, perfect if you’re heading to a destination wedding or just need a lot of products.

Because of the size, it’s more suitable to carry as a personal item on a flight.

If you’re heading to a destination wedding or if you just like to travel with a heavy armory of beauty products, this large case will be able to hold it all. We packed plenty of makeup and skincare items — some full-size ones in their original boxed packaging — and this case was nowhere near being full. Inside, a removable partition helped us keep our belongings organized, while the built-in mirror on the lid will be handy if you need to do your makeup on the go. There's also a convenient mini pouch for smaller essentials.

This is another option that has matching luggage, this time from Delsey’s stylish Chatelet Air collection , so if you own a suitcase by the brand, this train case would be the perfect bag to complement it. Though it’s quite large and bulky, it feels as durable as a tank if you want to make sure all of your products are protected. Just keep in mind that you probably won’t want to pack this inside a suitcase, but it does have a trolley sleeve to slide over a handle.

With only one pocket, there’s not many organizational features.

If you do not want to carry a train case on its own and would prefer to pack it away with your other belongings, this is a great packable option. We packed this case inside a backpack during a long flight, and it didn’t take up too much space or add bulk thanks to the flexible, vegan leather construction. We would just be careful with placing any fragile items (like glasses) inside, in case it somehow gets crushed.

The length of this case — over 10 inches — allowed us to pack several longer items (including a hairbrush and an electric toothbrush), and we thought it held a fair amount of products despite its smaller size. There aren't a ton of pockets to help you organize your items — just a mesh compartment on the lid — but it’s easy to access all of your items on the fly, especially since the top lid zips almost all the way around when you want to open it.

The makeup pockets and brush holders were a little tight.

Beauty enthusiasts will love this train case for its organizational features, storage potential, and — most of all — the removable LED mirror. It is basically like taking your home vanity with you anywhere you go, lighting the way if you have to do your makeup on the plane or in a dark hotel room. It has a structured construction that provides good protection for your items, while removable dividers keep products organized. We found it incredibly handy that you can remove the dividers and rearrange them to fit different sized products, though the velvet lining can get stained easily by makeup.

You can keep the mirror secure with a Velcro swatch, or swap it out for a section that holds makeup brushes, though we found some of the pockets to be quite tight (they’ll only hold thin brushes). The dimmable mirror has three different light settings that you can adjust with the press of a button to make it cooler or warmer, and the case also comes with a charger. The outer shell is relatively hard, but you’ll have to be somewhat careful not to drop it because it may not protect the mirror if it falls hard enough.

Paravel Mini See-All Vanity Case

You can easily see all of your belongings inside this clear case, and it’s easy to clean in case of spills.

It’s on the smaller side and doesn’t have any pockets.

Sometimes, you don't need to pack your entire vanity case for a trip, and this is when this mini case will come in handy. However, don't be fooled by its size — we were still able to pack plenty in it, including a full-size deodorant, moisturizer, eye cream, and multiple travel-size items. And the best part is that thanks to its clear (and sustainable) material, you can see where everything is inside so you don’t have to rummage through to find what you’re looking for. The durable canvas top and bottom parts are finished with a silicone coating and have anti-spill and water-resistant properties. The case doesn't come with dividers or pockets, but we didn't find that to be a nuisance. Even though the case is extremely lightweight, none of the items we packed ended up damaged or spilled.

This case is made from recycled preconsumer polyester and cotton, with plenty of pockets and compartments to keep you organized.

The zippers were hard to open and close.

Made from recycled cotton and polyester, this vanity case will please eco-minded travelers who like to stay organized on the road. This is an excellent option for storing liquids, makeup, and beauty tools, as the lining looks easy to wipe clean, though the case kept all of our items protected during testing, so we have not had any spills yet. We also tested the handle by packing a few heavier items in the case and carried it around. The sturdy handle held up great, and we never felt like it was straining or on the verge of giving up on us.

The dual compartments allow you to keep your toiletries and makeup essentials separate, though the zippers did not run as smoothly as other caes on this list. We do love that it comes with a mini case that you can remove. Lastly, this case is only available in a neutral cream and tan color with a bright blue interior.

There are plenty of useful compartments, and drawers that open to make products easily accessible.

The top three drawers are not very tall, something to keep in mind if you want to pack full-size products.

A multi-tray train case like this one isn't just for makeup artists. Any traveler who wants to protect their valuables on the road and stay organized can use it. We were seriously impressed with how sturdy and durably the case was — it is fairly easy to lift the two side latches that open and close it and then carry it by the handles without worrying that it would suddenly burst open. In fact, the case itself is pretty lightweight when empty, and we were impressed with how neatly organized everything inside was, with shelves and compartments that you can pull outward. Since the top three shelves are not very tall, we placed lipsticks, lip balms, mascaras, and brushes there, while we stored perfume bottles and body sprays in the bottom compartment. We are also happy to report that there were no spills and no items were misplaced during our flight. This train case is an excellent value for its quality and price tag, and even when you're not using it for travel, it could be a great spot to store beauty and makeup products at home.

Other Train Cases We Liked

Despite not making our final picks, these train cases offer plenty of useful features that some travelers will appreciate.

Calpak Trnk Vanity Case : This vanity case features one main compartment that fits a lot of essentials (including hair styling tools) and proved to be incredibly durable during our tests. Like the other Calpak train case above, it is on the larger size and will count as a personal item on a flight. Ultimately, we thought the option on our main list was a little more portable due to the less bulky shape.

Mac Cosmetics Carry All : This is an excellent makeup case with a built-in mirror and a carrying strap. It is the perfect size to fit everything from foundation bottles and primers to brushes (it also has different storage pockets and straps to keep things in place). One thing to note is that the lid was constantly closing when we were reaching in and out of the case, so it’s not the most convenient for on the go.

Pottery Barn Quinn Makeup Bag : This elegant case won us over with its storage capacity and rigid structure, which kept its shape no matter how much or what we packed inside. Though it has a wide mouth opening, it's difficult to completely unzip and keep open.

We tested 21 train cases for this article, first examining the quality of materials and how useful the features would be for organization and traveling. We packed each case with products we’d typically travel with, such as skincare products, makeup, toiletries, and small accessories to assess its overall capacity, plus bonus features like pockets, pouches, and zippers. 

Since one of the main features of a train case is its carrying handle, we made sure to carry around each fully packed bag to make sure the handle was able to hold the weight, and we tried packing the bags inside various suitcases and smaller bags to see how portable and packable they were. We assessed how durable each case was, if it kept our products in place, and any handy details it had like carrying straps or mirrors. In addition, we noted whether the lining would be easy to clean in case of any makeup or toiletry spills.

Lastly, our editors will continue to travel with their train cases for an additional six months to make sure they still like them and to see if they will hold up after longer periods of time. We will update this article with new feedback.

Tips for Buying Train Cases

Determine the size you need.

The average train case is a cuboid shape measuring 8-12 inches in width and height, and about 3-5 inches in depth with a wraparound zipper and a top handle. However, there is no uniform size; companies produce them in different dimensions and materials. To decide on the best size for your needs, consider what you will use it for: do you need it as "the personal item" that counts toward your carry-on allowance on planes? If that's the case, then go for a large or extra-large size that still fits under the seat. If you'd like to have the option to carry it with you inside a larger carry-on suitcase or checked luggage, then go for the next size down. And finally, if you like the design but simply want to use your train case as a cosmetics bag (and you don't travel with a lot of makeup and beauty products), a small should be enough. 

Consider compartments and other organizational features

Like any other piece of luggage you invest in, capacity and organizational features are key to functionality. Luckily, most train cases are designed with a couple of pockets along their walls as well as elasticized bands or pockets on the top. Many of them have removable dividers that can be useful if you carry many smaller items.

Finally, opt for a multi-layer train case if you need a lot of storage space. These are multi-tier cases that have at least four trays in addition to a spacious main compartment.

Determine how you plan to carry it

Train cases come in different shapes, sizes, and have different accessories such as straps and handles, so before you purchase one, think about how you plan to use and carry it. If you plan on packing your case inside a suitcase, then you should prioritize size to find something compact, and you can certainly do without extra shoulder straps or bulky built-in handles. It is also a good idea to opt for one with soft, flexible sides. 

However, if you need to haul a lot of products and intend to use it as a personal item (or you’re not flying with it so don’t need to worry about size restrictions), opt for something larger and sturdier that is easy to carry. Additionally, look for a crossbody strap or a trolley sleeve.

You'll notice that train cases are often described as beauty cases, too. And they are indeed very practical for storing and carrying cosmetics and beauty tools such as makeup brushes, masks, and rollers — even a travel razor .

However, as we mentioned at the beginning, train cases have been used for decades to transport all sorts of household items, so depending on the design and construction, you can also carry filming equipment such as a camera and lenses (make sure the train case has padded walls), cables and chargers, snacks, jewelry, and accessories.

When it comes to the best design and construction of a train case, it will largely depend on its purpose. For example, if you would like to carry yours as a piece of hand luggage, opt for a hardside train case to best protect your belongings. If you prefer to pack it in your purse, carry-on, or checked luggage, go with one made from nylon, polyester, leather, or canvas since they are more flexible. In all cases, though, investing in a train case with water- and stain-proof lining is a good idea.

Most train cases can be wiped clean with a damp cloth, but you should read the care instructions as soon as you receive it (or even before you order it). Hardshell train cases could also be wiped with antibacterial wipes, but that will again depend on their material. If you opt for a leather train case, remember that you must protect it from scratches and humidity/wet places but it’s likely possible to spot-treat stains on other softer materials. Most cases have a polyester or nylon lining that's waterproof and can easily be cleaned with a little soap and water, too.

Mirrors are a convenient feature that can help you apply your makeup on the go, but not every train case has one.
