Dress Accordingly: 6 Tips for What to Wear on a School Trip

What to Wear

Deciding what to wear on a school trip can be challenging! You want to be comfortable, but you also want to look good. Here are our recommendations:

What to Wear Tip #1: Check the Weather

This may sound obvious, but  many students do not think to do this before a trip. Check the weather forecast for your destination city prior to packing and especially the night before departure. The weather may vary wildly from your home town and may change day-to-day and hour-by-hour. Check the weather, and then pack accordingly! Don’t forget sunscreen, an umbrella, a scarf, gloves, etc. Students end up needlessly miserable by skipping this important step.

What to Wear Tip #2: Dress in Layers

School trips are often touring in the morning, afternoon, and evening. Each time of day can bring its own unique weather and temperature. Bring light layers on the bus – a long sleeve shirt, a light jacket, a raincoat, etc. You’ll be happy that you did when it is cold in the morning and hot in the afternoon.

What to Wear Tip #3: When in Doubt, Choose Long Pants

If you are debating between shorts or pants, choose pants. There is a certain amount of dust and grime that you will accumulate while walking through the city all day. If you think this will bother you, wear pants to feel cleaner for longer.

Additionally, some sites on your itinerary may be more conservative by nature. Pants ensure that you are dressed appropriately.

What to Wear Tip #4: Pack More than One Pair of Shoes

A school trip is  not the time to break in a new pair of shoes. You will be walking more often than you think! Wear shoes that are broken-in and make sure that you bring a backup pair. Some shoes seem comfortable until they result in surprising blisters. Your feet will thank you if you alternative shoes between days of touring.

What to Wear Tip #5: Err on the Conservative Side

When in doubt, choose the more conservative clothing. This will ensure that you represent yourself and your school well. Additionally, if sites more conservative in nature are included on your itinerary (think, the United Nations, the U.S. Capitol, Arlington National Cemetery), you will want to dress respectfully.

What to Wear Tip #6: Align with School Dress Code

Does your school have a school trip dress code? Many schools have guidelines in place for what can and cannot be worn during a school trip. Prepare accordingly.

Will the students have school trip t-shirts or sweatshirts? Many schools commemorate the trip with a t-shirt that everyone wears on a particular day. Make sure yours is packed!

Will your student be laying a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington National Cemetery? Dress code guidelines are in place.

Fox In Flats - by Andrea Michelle

What to wear on a school excursion (and how to survive them with a smile!)

school excursion outfit

By Louise Rodgers

As the year draws to a close, there’s a rush on school excursions. Many teachers like to have a special away day with the kids to mark the end of the year, and inevitably the school newsletter is crammed with calls for parents to volunteer to accompany classes on their off campus adventures. If the very idea makes you shake in your Converse, you’re not alone.

For the first couple of years after my eldest child started school, I avoided going on excursions like the plague.  I always used my toddler as an excuse not to go, but in reality I was terrified. I get car sick in buses, I’m shy, I don’t like having to discipline other people’s kids, it sounded like hard work, etc. etc… I think you get the idea.  Once both of my children were at school, I was back at work and therefore had an even better excuse for not going.  Over the last twelve months though, I’ve made a lot of changes in my life.  The main change is a reduction in my work commitments to one day a week (my choice – a long story!), so there were no more excuses for not going on excursions.  The result: in the last twelve months I’ve been on three, the most delightful of which was a trip to the zoo with seventy five Year 5 boys!

Here are my tips on what to wear, what to take, and how to survive the school excursion.

1.  Keep it comfy

Converse, loafers, boots, a sandal with a bit of a wedge – shoes that you’re certain you can walk in for a full day.  It may seem obvious but even the most innocent-sounding trip to the Botanic Gardens to see the stick insects ended up leaving my legs aching from walking and standing around waiting for seven year olds to fill in their activity booklets. Shoes with a bit of cushioning can be your saviour on an excursion like this.

school excursion outfit

2.  Wear Pants

I can guarantee you that at some stage during the day, you’ll be required to sit on the ground.  This might be to listen to someone talk to the class, to eat lunch, or maybe even to wait for the bus.  I guess this could be expanded to say wear pants that are not white or light in colour.  If you have to sit on damp grass in a park or someone decides to wipe their sticky hands on your leg, then white pants are not going to last past morning tea.

3.  Layer it up

You’ll be outside, you’ll be inside, you’ll be on a bus or train, you’ll be gone all day and the weather might change.  I think a singlet then a shirt or tunic then a cardie is a good start.  Don’t wear denim or boyfriend jackets that you end up having to carry over your arm all day.  Items that can be tied around your waist or carried easily in your bag are great.  (I love Metallicus for layering pieces like tights and cardigans).

4. Take a Hat

We all know about the “no hat, no play” rule by now so it only makes sense to lead by example.  The teacher will have one and all the kids will too, so you may as well join in!

5.  Bag vs Backpack

I have yet to find a stylish backpack, so if anyone knows where I can get one I would appreciate the tip!  I prefer to wear an across-the-body bag or satchel instead, for two reasons. Firstly, it won’t slide down your arm every time you have to lean over to listen to a softly spoken little girl ask to use the bathroom.  Secondly, I find it saves my back from getting achy after all the aforementioned walking and standing around.

7 Items to Pack in Your Bag

  • Ginger tablets for the bumpy bus ride
  • A travel pack of wipes
  • Paracetamol for your inevitable headache
  • Antiseptic hand gel (because other people’s kids’ germs are not as endearing as your own)
  • A bottle of water
  • Lunch and snacks in a brown paper bag (or get your child to lug it around in theirs if you can!)
The most important thing to wear is a smile, and the most important thing to take is a sense of fun and adventure.”

There is a reason your children get so excited about trips out of the school grounds – it is great fun and I wish I had started volunteering sooner! It will also give you a wonderful insight into your child’s personality and the way they interact with their peers.  Oh, and if you do have to discipline anyone, don’t feel too bad or scared about it. I had to remind two little girls not to run in an art gallery, one of them glared at me and hissed, “We’re not running, we’re skipping!!” Pffft!

Have you braved a school excursion, and if so, what’re your tips?

And if you’re too chicken, what excuses do you come up with?

What To Pack For A School Excursion

school excursion outfit

Spring, with its sunny days and warm weather, is the perfect time for going on a school excursion. If you are a parent whose kid is heading out for a day trip with his class for the first time, here is a list of things your child should bring:

Comfortable outfit

Field trips mean staying in nature all day long and walking and sightseeing a lot, so it is very important to dress your kid in a comfortable outfit. Tight jeans or uncomfortable sneakers will turn the exciting excursion to a nightmare. Dress your child in layers. Also, extra pair of socks are always super helpful if your kid’s feet get wet.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BKH88xOAsnl/?tagged=kidsfieldtrip

A smaller, light-weighted backpack is the perfect option. For security reasons, write your family name inside the bag, also you should include your e-mail address or your phone number somewhere in the bag.

If the school policy allows their students to take extra money with them, you should give your kids a modest amount of cash. Do not overdo it, because they could lose it or get robbed.

Water bottles and snacks

A refillable inexpensive plastic water bottle is a must. As far as the food is concerned, the best solution is to pack non-perishable food, for example a healthy sandwich or/and a fresh yummy fruit.

Going on an overnight school trip can be incredibly exciting, but packing for that trip can be overwhelming. It’s hard not to want to bring all of your favorite outfits and shoes with you, especially when you know you’ll be taking pictures. Do yourself a favor and learn to pack smart—after all, you can’t have a good time if you’re unable to lift your bag.

Overnight School Trip Packing List

school excursion outfit

Preparing to Pack

Step 1 Research the weather.

  • Use a site like Weather.com to figure out the projected weather forecast for the days of your trip.
  • Look at both the highs and the lows. Temperatures fluctuate throughout the day, so check to see both how warm and cold it will get and pack for both sets of conditions.

Step 2 Count how many days you’ll be gone.

  • Plan to pack one extra outfit, in case you spill or have a problem with one of your other outfits.
  • Plan to pack at least two extra pairs of underwear and socks. They’re small enough that they won’t take up a lot of room, but you’ll miss them if you don’t have them.

Step 3 Plan your outfits.

  • Lay all of your outfits on the floor, organized by day of the week. This way, you can see what you’re missing or forgetting.
  • If you’re going to be doing a lot of walking, pack sneakers or other walking shoes.
  • If you’re staying at a campground with a lake or a hotel with a pool, pack a one-piece bathing suit.

Step 4 Make a packing list.

  • If you’re going to a competition or festival, make sure you pack any school related items you might need.
  • If you're camping out in a tent, you will need to bring your own sleeping bag and sleeping pad. A pillow is also recommended.
  • If you’re staying at a hotel, you do not need to pack shampoo, conditioner, and shower gel. These will be supplied for you.
  • Pack some extra period products – you never know when you’re going to need them.

Step 5 Pack only the items you will use.

  • Talk to your friends who are traveling with you so you don’t double up on the same items. If you’re all sharing a tent or room, no more than one person would need to bring a hairdryer.
  • If you accidentally overlook something, you can always purchase it when you arrive at your destination.

Packing Your Bag

Step 1 Choose a bag.

  • If you’re going backpacking or hiking, make sure to bring a backpack with you.
  • If you’re traveling on a plane, check to see if your group will be checking bags. If not, your bag will need to be small enough to fit in an overhead bin.
  • Try to choose a bag that is brightly colored, so you can easily identify it. You can also tie a bandana on your suitcase handle to easily identify your bag.
  • Label your bag with your name and a phone number in case you and your bag get separated.

Step 2 Use the space in your bag wisely.

  • Make sure to pack some empty plastic bags. You can use these to hold your laundry and wet bathing suits.
  • Save a small amount of space in your bag for any souvenirs you might want to bring home.

Step 3 Pack a separate bag with your valuables.

  • This bag should contain things like your wallet, any forms of ID, your electronics and chargers.
  • You should also pack one of your outfits in this bag, in case your other bag doesn’t reach your destination at the same time you do.
  • Include a book, hand cream, lip balm, hair ties, gum and any tickets you might need in this bag as well.

Adding in the Extras

Step 1 Pack food and drinks.

  • Granola bars, fruit snacks and pieces of fruit travel well and are easy to eat on the go.
  • If you’re traveling on a plane, bring an empty water bottle. You’ll be able to fill it up as soon as you get through security.

Step 2 Pack items to help you sleep and bathe.

  • If you’re not staying in a hotel, pack your own towel.
  • If you’re staying somewhere with group showers, pack flip-flops too.

Step 3 Pack cash and your ID cards.

  • If you’re traveling internationally, pack your passport.
  • Pack your student ID, just in case. It may get you a discount on something!

What to Wear to a Kindergarten Excursion

Last Tuesday was my first kindergarten excursion with my daughter, Esther, and I don’ t know who was more excited!

When you envision having kids, you do dream about all the fun things you will do together, and one of the moments I dreamed about was helping with kindy and school excursions when my kids would go to school.

Of course working out what to wear played on my mind because I knew we’d be on our feet most of the day. I also had to think about wearing clothes that would allow me to bend down to talk to kids, so my clothes needed to be comfortable and simple.

When I surveyed the mums (and 1 dad) on the trip, we all had the similar style outfits on. Shorts or cotton pants with simple tops. Shoes were flats or joggers. Backpacks were the bag of choice, so hands could be free to hold little hands.

This is what I wore.

What I Wore

I admit the scarf did get in my way at times, but I don’t like wearing a plain top without some sort of interest via a necklace or scarf. I adjusted the scarf as needed when I had to.

My tips for what to wear when you go on an excursion with your child are:

  • Consider the weather and temperature of the day. We were heading to Ipswich and the temperature was going to be a hot 30 degrees.
  • Wear flat shoes or joggers because you will be on your feet most of the day and having good, supportive, FLAT footwear is a must. I wore my Frankie Sophie’s and they were great to walk in and I didn’t have sore feet at the end of the day.
  • Bring a hat. I brought mine but didn’t wear it as I was always in the shade, but the kids usually will eat their morning tea and lunch outside and there are no guarantees there will be shade.
  • Wear a backpack or make use of that baby bag or tote with long handles that you can hoist on your shoulder. The bag should be big enough to carry your hat, lunch and water bottle. I emptied my tote bag of nappies to make room for my lunch bag and water bottle.
  • Sunglasses for outside time and during meal breaks.
  • Don’t wear anything that always needs to be adjusted like tops or dresses that need ties around the waist. A simple tee and shorts or tank and print pants or even a dress will work.

Here is an outfit idea if you are needing to plan what to wear to your child’s kindergarten or school excursion.

What to wear on Kindergarten excursion

2. Katies Perforated Tote Back $49.95

3. Portmans Mono Stripe Hat $29.95

4. Frankie 4 Footwear Ellie $229.95

5. Birdsnest Bird Keepers The Denim Short $69.95

Cruise Packing Tips

What to Wear on Cruise Excursions (+ What to Pack in Your Day Bag)

When you’re planning your cruise packing list, working out your cruise excursion outfits is key. By the time you’re packing you should know which cruise ship excursions you’re doing in each port. This makes it so much easier to plan what to wear on cruise excursions as it really depends on the type of activity you’re doing on shore.

In this post we cover what to wear on cruise shore excursions and what to pack in your bag when you venture off the ship. We have a guide on cruise excursions bags here and we’ve also noted suggestions below. One of our best cruise excursion tips is to make sure you have the right bag and the right things packed for your day off the ship. Sun protection is key!

  • 1.1 Beach Excursions
  • 1.2 Active Excursions
  • 1.3 Sailing or Water Excursions
  • 1.4 Shopping or Sightseeing Excursions
  • 1.5 Mediterranean Shore Excusions
  • 1.6 Alaska Shore Excursions

What to Wear on Cruise Excursions

What to Wear on Cruise Excursions

Swimsuit / Swimsuit coverup / Flip flops / Sunhat / Sunglasses

Beach Excursions

If you’re headed straight from the ship to a beach excursion, you can simply wear your swimsuit, a coverup and flip flops. Don’t forget a hat and a cheap pair sunglasses that you don’t mind wearing in the ocean. Throw a pair of shorts into your beach bag in case you want to wander around some shops or eat in a restaurant.

Recommended bag: Tote bag or mesh beach bag

What to pack in your excursion bag:  Waterproof phone case, ship card, cash, sunscreen, sunhat, sunglasses, beach towel, water bottle

UV Tank Top / Workout Shorts / Sneakers / Aqua Shoes / Cap /  Sunglasses

Active Excursions

Workout gear is ideal for active excursions like zip-lining, tubing, caving and hiking. Shorts and a t-shirt or vest top are idea. You may even need to bring your swim suit along or wear it underneath.  Many of these types of excursions require you to wear closed toe sneakers for safety reasons. For things like caving you might even need slip on aqua shoes.

Recommended bag: Lightweight backpack or dry bag

What to pack in your excursion bag:  Waterproof phone case, ship card, cash, sunscreen, cap, sunglasses, beach towel, swimsuit, water bottle, dry clothes, flip flops

Striped T-Shirt / Shorts / Swimsuit / Flip flops /  Sunglasses

Sailing or Water Excursions

For sailing or other water based excursions like snorkeling or scuba trips, the ideal outfit is shorts and a t-shirt, vest top or short sleeved shirt with your swimsuit underneath. If it’s a relaxing excursion, then flip flops are fine. Some sailing excursions are a bit more active and might require a pair of sneakers. Aqua shoes might be useful if you’re snorkeling at a reef. Throw your swimsuit coverup in your bag to pop on after you come out of the water from snorkeling or swimming.

What to pack in your excursion bag:  Waterproof phone case, ship card, cash, sunscreen, cap, sunglasses, beach towel, swimsuit cover up, water bottle, seasickness medication/seabands

Vest top / Capri pants /  Sunhat / Sunglasses / Sandals

Shopping or Sightseeing Excursions

For shopping or sightseeing excursions when you won’t be hitting the beach or getting wet, go for casual cruise attire. Shorts, a polo shirt or short sleeved shirt and sneakers, sandals or flip flops for men. A cute sundress, maxidress or a vest top or tunic and shorts or capris are ideal for the ladies. Bring along sunglasses and a sunhat too. A light scarf is also useful if you’re visiting churches or sacred sites as you may need to cover your shoulders (if you’re wearing a sleeveless top).

Recommended bag: Tote bag, lightweight backpack or travel purse

What to pack in your excursion bag: Ship card, cash, sunscreen, sunhat, sunglasses, water bottle, light scarf

Sundress / Lightweight scarf / Sunhat / Sunglasses / Sandals

Mediterranean Shore Excusions

If you’re cruising in the Mediterranean then your shore excursions might be city sightseeing, visiting ruins or sailing trips. For sailing trips, see the information above. If you’re wandering the streets in cities like Rome, Monaco or Nice you might find that you want to dress slightly nicer. Still go for casual but a sundress and sandals looks a lot better than shorts. If you’re doing a lot of walking on your tour, make sure you go for comfortable walking shoes. Don’t forget a light scarf to cover up for visiting churches – one of our best Mediterranean cruise excursions tips!

Fleece jacket / Active pants / Gloves / Beanie / Sneakers

Alaska Shore Excursions

There are a few different types of shore excursions on Alaska cruises. They key with Alaska cruise excursion outfits is to dress in layers as temperatures can vary and change quickly. You could find yourself doing something very active like kayaking, fishing, dogsledding or ziplining. For these types of excursions you’ll need active pants like these or full length workout pants, a warm baselayer, a fleece and a waterproof jacket. For the more lightly active excursions like whale watching, city sightseeing or riding a historic train line, you should wear jeans, shorts, active pants, a t-shirt or warmer baselayer and a jacket or fleece. It really depends on the weather on that day.  For a full list of what to pack for an Alaskan cruise read this post.

Recommended bag:  Lightweight backpack or travel purse

What to pack in your excursion bag: Ship card, cash, sunscreen, cap, sunglasses, water bottle, gloves, warm hat, warm scarf, seasickness medication/seabands

Avocado has a tool-free, squeak-free, sustainable bed frame we can’t live without.

school excursion outfit

New Yorkers are often confronted with a lack of space, but something we do not have trouble with is filling it perfectly to meet our standard of living with the perfect proportions afforded to us.

Sleeping in the most comfortable bed with a stylish frame is key, especially in a small space where the bed becomes the focal point. Avocado created the perfect eco-friendly centerpiece for your space.

RELATED: My review of the Avocado mattress that helped alleviate my back issues

Think Scandinavian chic, with solid FSC-certified North American timber used to form planks that perfectly support your mattress. The slats are edged with cotton to ensure no embarrassing squeaks for prying ears to hear.

Unlike other bedframes, the City Bed Frame doesn’t require tools to assemble and locks easily into place, with perfectly crafted corners. The wood has zero veneers, or MDF used, so the quality will last for several years.

In fact, the company believes in this bed so strongly that it offers a 10-year warranty when purchased through authorized retailers with proof of purchase.

Health-conscious consumers will appreciate that the City Bed Frame contains no harmful substances, varnishes, or lacquers.

Avocado began with a mission: to raise the bar for sustainability. It started as a GOTS-certified organic mattress company and has since expanded to luxury pillows, bedding, frames, and furniture.

The company doesn’t just talk about protecting the environment; it acts on it. Avocado is climate-neutral certified, a B-Corp, and contributes mattress revenue to 1% For The Planet, an environmental nonprofit.

So whether you’re searching for the best mattress on earth or want to complement it with luxe bedding or cooling sheets for hot sleepers , you’ve come to the right place.

Avocado City Bed Frame

A bed with pillows on it

  • Available in multiple sizes from Twin to California King
  • Offered in two natural wood, blonde woods, or solid American walnut
  • The headboard is sold separately

If you’re uncertain about which finish to choose, we offer samples so you can find the perfect match for your space. Our market research shows that Avocado not only costs nearly half as much as its competitors but also provides superior environmental and health benefits.

It’s available in blonde solid wood or rich American walnut. The headboard is sold separately, allowing you to choose either a minimalist look or a bold focal point for your room.

In addition to being easy to assemble, Avocado is also highly convenient to move, making it ideal for relocating or switching bedrooms. Not to mention, carrying up spiral staircases or attic-type spots, which is hard to move a bed in, if at all — a common New York problem.

Sizes range from Twin to California King.

  • Twin: 77 inches long by 40 inches wide by 11 inches high; weighs 62 pounds
  • Full: 77 inches long by 56 inches wide by 11 inches high; weighs 72 pounds
  • Queen: 82 inches long by 62 inches wide by 11 inches high; weighs 82 pounds
  • King: 82 inches long by 78 inches wide by 11 inches high; weighs 92 pounds
  • California King: 86 inches long by 74 inches wide by 11 inches high; weighs 92 pounds

One five-star reviewer said it was “great in every way,” leaving a glowing and informative review.

“My wife and I love digging into details before we buy anything. When it came to getting a new bed frame, we did our homework. What sold us on this bed frame were the sleek rounded corners, the very easy setup, minimal space, the beautiful color, and its eco-friendliness.”

The couple recommended an extra pair of hands to carry the headboard, so plan accordingly when setting it up. They also noted, “The quality is just as promised—spot on. I’ve gotta say that Avocado has turned into my go-to for home goods…it’s rare to come across a company that stands out like they do.”

Currently, Avocado is offering 10% off the City Bed frame for a limited time. Hurry before this sale ends and sleep soundly, knowing that your purchase looks out for the environment and your health for years to come.

What’s Your Teacher Outfit of the Day? Educators Share Their Best School Fashion

  • Share article

#TeacherStyle. #TeacherOOTD. #TeacherOutfit. Each of these hashtags have hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of posts dedicated to the topic of teacher fashion. Why?

Well, while back-to-school shopping might be exciting for students, it can be confusing and stressful for some teachers. How can they dress in a way that satisfies the sometimes-strict dress code requirements, is cost-conscious, and yet is comfortable and functional?

What it means to dress “professionally” in the classroom is often unclear. Some districts set few rules, but others leave little room for interpretation, even going as far as to require teachers to pay to wear jeans.

Image of a hand moving hangers and clothes in a closet.

Grade level and subject can also dictate the type of wardrobe that would be best suited to the role . Kindergarten teachers have to run after small children, a task not suited for the A-line skirts and pantyhose of the past. Gym teachers aren’t expected to show up to class in a three-piece suit.

Finally, there’s the issue of cost. The average teacher salary has risen to $71,699, but has not kept pace with inflation, meaning paychecks don’t go as far as they did a decade ago, according to the National Education Association. And teacher salaries pale in comparison to those of comparable college graduates — 23.5 percent less on average , according to a 2022 analysis by the Economic Policy Institute .

A rising cohort of teachers are turning to content creation on social media , and now, many are promoting affordable fashion that will fit any dress code to assist their colleagues searching for great back-to-school styles.

These four creators offer tips on how to build a comfortable classroom wardrobe that doesn’t break the bank.

Mapping Ukraine’s Surprise Invasion of Russia

By Josh Holder

After two and a half years of fighting a war on their own soil, Ukrainian forces are continuing to advance within Russia, as their surprise invasion of the Kursk region enters its third week.

Beginning early on Aug. 6, Ukraine quickly broke through thinly manned border defenses and has now captured dozens of Russian towns and villages, adding a new twist to a war that had largely settled into grueling, block-by-block fighting in towns in eastern Ukraine.

Ukraine’s incursion into Kursk brought about one of the largest territorial changes since the first month of the war, when Russia rapidly advanced toward major Ukrainian cities. The head of Ukraine’s armed forces, Gen. Oleksandr Syrsky, has claimed that Ukraine is in control of about 490 square miles of Russian territory.

If confirmed, that would represent roughly the same amount of land that Russian forces seized in Ukraine from January through July of this year, according to the Institute for the Study of War, a Washington-based think tank.

President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine has said that the aim is to create a “buffer zone” inside Russia alongside the border. He has given no specifics about the size of the area his military is aiming to seize.

This week, Ukraine struck bridges across the Seym River, a move that military analysts say could trap Russian troops between the river and the border with Ukraine.

At least three bridges have been damaged, which The Times was able to independently verify through satellite imagery and videos posted to social media.

It is unclear how many Russian troops are in the area, but satellite imagery from Planet Labs, a commercial satellite company, shows that Russia has built temporary pontoon bridges to allow its vehicles to continue to cross the river. One could be seen east of the town of Glushkovo on Aug. 17, with vehicle tracks visible nearby. Another was visible further along the river, just north of Glushkovo, on Aug. 21.

On Wednesday, Ukraine released videos of its forces striking these Russian pontoon bridges in Kursk with U.S.-supplied weapons.

Russia later built a pontoon bridge farther east. Vehicle tracks can be seen near the bridge.

Although Ukraine’s advances have slowed since the first days of its incursion, it continues to push forward, according to imagery verified by the Institute for the Study of War.

Satellite imagery from Planet Labs shows that Russia has built new defensive fortifications around 20 miles from Ukrainian positions in Kursk, near the E38 highway. The fortifications include trenches for troops to fire from, and anti-tank ditches, such as the one shown below.

While the Ukrainian military is gaining ground in Russia, it is losing it back home. The Russian offensive in eastern Ukraine is building momentum.

Russian troops are less than 10 miles from Pokrovsk, putting them in artillery range of the city, which had a population of about 40,000 before the war began and is a key transport hub. To the northeast, Russian troops are on the doorstep of Toretsk, and control most of Niu-York, footage verified by the Institute for the Study of War shows.

Military analysts say that one of Ukraine’s likely objectives in invading Kursk was to force Russia to divert troops away from eastern Ukraine to fight in Kursk, but so far the Kremlin has resisted. Instead, it has brought in reinforcements mainly from elsewhere in Russia, prioritizing its military objectives in Ukraine over a rapid response to the foreign incursion.
